447 Words Sumiko Ryuugamine | Sumiko had often wondered what exactly was going on in the lives of the people around her. Businessmen strutting past confidently on their way back from work, or looking relieved as if they didn't like their job. Students her age were wandering back from school, joking and gossipping with one another as if there was nothing at all wrong with their lives. Most students had quirks, but some didn't, and yet she couldn't help but still feel a bit excluded.
Ever since that fateful day, she hadn't exactly gone to school. It wasn't exactly like she or her new family could afford it either. Of course, she knew full well at this age that she was at a major disadvantage to those with actual education. Sometimes, she wondered if it actually would have been better if she had gotten adopted by a normal family. She could have gone to school, made friends her age, she could have...
Sumiko shook her head to shake away that current train of thought. What was done had been done, and that was that. The people she called her family had done everything they thought was right to help her, and she had no reason to question that. Still, her jealousy for a normal person life was a bit hard to ignore. What she wouldn't give to come home to see her mom on the couch, cuddle up with her just like she used to, or even ask her dad to help her with her homework when she struggled. Now, most of her problems were much simpler things. Like scrounging around enough change to take the subway out and about and back.
Regardless, Sumiko was currently out and about rather far from home. At the park, sitting with her back pressed up against a tree as she held a book in her hands. She'd never admit it to anyone she knew for fear of embarrassment, but it was simply a Japanese history book. If she wanted any sort of good job in the future, she needed to be just as educated as everyone else if not more so. Despite the pride she felt for the gang she called her family and how inspiring they were, even Sumiko could see the looks of desperation whenever money came into the picture. The desire to have what they didn't.
It wasn't exactly the most peaceful afternoon, but with the sky rather clear and her little position in the shadows of her tree, for a moment she could almost lose herself in her studies. Her sleeveless dress was getting a bit dirty as she sat on the ground, but Sumiko honestly didn't care in the slightest.

Owen enjoyed taking walks on his time off, especially through parks. Having grown up in Ireland, Japan's cities and towns seemed so drastically different, wondrously foreign to him, even if he was finally beginning to get used to it all after a few months of living there and going to the country's premiere Hero school. He also figured that exploring town and trying to not get lost would be a good idea in case he happened to begin operating there upon graduation, being familiar with the layout and general architecture would be especially important to him as one who couldn't just use his Quirk to fly or leap over the buildings. Being agile didn't mean too much without having a good sense of how to move through one's environment, after all.
As he reached Tokyo Park, the Irish lad decided to take a break from his walk and partake in one of his other favorite pass-times, getting to know a stranger or two. His father was always fond of the phrase "a stranger is just a friend you haven't made yet" and while Owen was a bit skeptical of that concept considering Villains existed, he believed most people out and about were generally good people, and definitely interesting. It didn't take too long for the antlered young man to find a potentially interesting person to get to know. She looked like she was probably around his own age, sitting in the shadow of a tree, reading a book, with some kick-ass dragon tattoos. Those tattoos were what sealed the deal. Someone his age with ink? Now that was interesting.
He couldn't open with bringing attention to those, however, he was socially aware enough to know that doing so would make him seem a little weird, a bit too focused on just the one thing. Instead, he approaches quietly from the other side of the tree, trying to get a look at the book before finally speaking. "Aye, fine day t'catch up on some readin' I s'pose. Anything interestin'?" Owen spoke with his thick accent and a calm, friendly tone, trying to counterbalance the innate awkwardness of approaching someone unannounced in this day and age. The last thing he wanted to come off as was creepy or something along those lines, though his big, doofy grin probably wasn't helping all too much in that particular regard.

392 Words | Sumiko had just begun to attempt to learn more about the Edo period before she had been approached. Raising an eyebrow, she slowly looked up at the boy with her hands still on her book. Quirks always made appearances hard to determine, but he looked at least around her age. Those freckles and green eyes, paired with his antlers and hooves for a very obvious quirk, made quite a noticeable look about him. Still, she couldn't resist the urge to smile a bit when she noticed how wide he was smiling. Talking to people her own age was always a lovely occurrence. It wasn't exactly like she had any major social circles she could dive herself on into just at the drop of a hat. Normally if she wanted to socialize, she had to reach out herself. It was a nice change.
"Oh." She spoke in response, admittedly a bit unsure how to respond. "I'm reading uh, some history. Studying, sort of. I mean, I don't have a test or anything. Well, that would imply I've ever had a test when I've not. Soo..." She shook her head to stop herself from rambling even more, laughing a little bit before suddenly reaching out a hand to shake his. "The name is Sumiko." As she would shake his hand, the dragon tattoo on her arm would physically shift down towards her hand, almost as if watching the handshake go down. "Just trying to learn a little bit about the Edo period, actually. It's very interesting, and I assumed that since I don't already know much, it's best to learn now, right? No sense putting it off, anyway." Not to mention, if she had any chance of getting into some fancy shmancy school, she didn't want to just barely coast through.
"And may I ask, what's your name?" She couldn't help but glance up and down a bit. He certainly didn't seem Japanese, and she certainly hadn't yet seen a quirk that changed someone's genetics to that extreme just yet. Sure he looked like a deer, but deer were graceful animals. That wasn't exactly anything to even waste a second thinking about, honestly. Mutation-based quirks might have a much more physical presence, but he was still just a young man her age. "And uh, where are you from? If you don't mind me asking."

Owen listened to the girl's response, smile not once faltering, though he did tilt his head as she seemed to ramble on for a bit, explaining that she was studying, not for a test, having never had a test before. That's definitely interesting. File that under something to ask about later. It was definitely unusual for someone his age to not have tests and presumably not go to school. It already seemed that he had stumbled upon an interesting person.
Offered a hand to shake, Owen reached down, giving it a firm shake. "Ohhhh! Neat name, I like it!." Japanese names always sounded neat to him. He almost missed the dragon's movement. Also neat, probably her Quirk, it'd be weird if it wasn't. Was it watching him? Did it have a mind of its own? Before he could ask any of these questions, Sumiko continued on, going into further depth as to what exactly she was reading. "Aw yeah, Edo! Wasn't that like, what with the shogun and samurai and whatnot?" He wasn't very well-versed in Japanese history, but he got some of the vague ideas.
"Ah, me manners!" Owen took a step back, outstretching his arms as though to present himself. "It's Owen O'Sullivan, and I hail from Ireland!" He responded cheerily before continuing. "Came down 'ere with me brother a few months back. He came 'cause he likes Japan, I came t'go to UA! Not that there's anythin' wrong with Japan itself, but bein' a Hero's the goal, y'know?" If he were a more cautious person, Owen likely wouldn't have brought up that he was a Hero-in-training, but he wasn't afraid of a stranger he met in a park, especially when she was so friendly.
Having introduced himself, Owen sat himself down on the grass in front of Sumiko, making it clear that he intended to stick around and continue to make conversation with the girl. "So's that tattoo yer Quirk? Figure mine's real obvious, huh? Antlers'n all. It ain't much, but I make the most've it, yeah?" Owen let out a hearty chuckle, amused by his own seemingly unimpressive Quirk.

379 Words Sumiko Ryuugamine | "I believe you would be correct. The Edo period was when Japanese society was commanded by the Tokugawa shogunate." She nodded her head in response. For someone who appeared to not be from Japan, she was a tad impressed with his ability to recall such a fact. Japanese history probably wasn't exactly taught in other countries much, at least to her recollection. He probably learned that fact all on his own.
Owen O'Sullivan was an interesting name, but his home country of Ireland explained it perfectly. She didn't know much about Europe and the countries within, but stereotypes were unfortunately pretty easy to spot. Now that she had realized, she could even hear the accent coming from his voice. How did she not notice before? However, Sumiko froze in her spot as he mentioned U.A. Was this someone who was already a student? Someone looking to be a student? She couldn't tell from the way he spoke, but her eyes narrowed as she grew even more curious. Just what secrets did his quirk hold? Surely it was more impressive than he made it out to be. Or at the very least, he probably knew how to fight. "Yeah. The tattoos are my quirk." Setting her book down finally, Sumiko simply held out her arms. The dragons upon her forearms seemed excited, swirling around her skin before seemling bursting through the skin and into a physical form. Twin jade dragons in the flesh, connected to her arms, just as real as almost any other animal. Breathing, blinking, glancing at her conversational partner curiously as they idly moved around to explore their new environment. She spoke with an incredibly wide smirk on her face, obviously very proud of her quirk. "I can control them, yes, but they do have a mind of their own when I am not imposing my will. It's interesting, but I suppose I wouldn't wish for it to be any different."
She would physically pull the dragons back into her arms, returning back to their simple state of nothing but tattoos. "If you can't imagine, you can imagine why I would be taking this time to study. I'm attempting to get into U.A. myself, as it stands. I imagine my quirk might be... Beneficial, for hero work."

Owen was glad to hear he'd given her the correct answer on the subject of Japanese history. He didn't really know all too much about it, really, just some vague ideas of it, but he'd learned quite a bit more since he first arrived to the country and started going to UA. It was pretty neat, really. Helped to have a brother that was pretty wild about this sort of stuff.
The antlered boy was clearly excited when Sumiko held her arms out, clearly preparing to present her Quirk. He watched the dragons move down her arms, then jumped a bit as they escaped her skin, forming physical entities. He wasn't really expecting them to do that! "Woah! Dragons!" Owen lifted a hand to reach out and try to touch one of them, but was just a bit too late as she pulled them back into her arms at tattoos. "Why, that's amazin'! Can ye 'magine all the things you could do with that? Well, uh, course you can, it's yer Quirk! Hah!" Owen chuckled at his own verbal stumble.
If it was possible, Owen's eyes lit up even more as she brought up her intentions to enroll into UA. "Ah! Yer goin' to UA too? Guess I'll see ye there!" The boy was clearly very excited to have met someone else not only with heroic aspirations, but plans to walk the same path that he was. "I'm already goin' but since I came in just few months before end o' the year, they're thinkin' 'bout havin' me retake the first year. I ain't got an issue wit that really, wanted t'be part o' the first gen o' educated 'n' trained Heroes, but I figure a year ain't gonna make too much a difference, 'nd it'd be better t'be as ready fer it as possible, yeah?" Owen spoke a mile a minute, either unaware of how fast he was speaking, or unwilling, possibly unable to slow himself down. He was quite the excitable boy, after all.
"Back on the dragons though!" Despite his excitement on the subject of UA, Owen forced the conversation to turn back to Sumiko's Quirk, still finding it quite the interesting subject. "Do they only come outta yer arms? Do they breathe fire? How strong're they? How far d'they come out?" You would think this was Owen's first time seeing a Quirk, but really, he just grew up around people with some pretty plain Quirks and more of a focus on simple physical prowess.
