| And now for a different type of hero | | It was an unusual feeling, watching the landscapes drift past her as Elise was seated by herself at a window of the train that was taking her from the city of Musutafu to Tokyo. It was a weird feeling, but as her gaze drifted sideways and her hand grasped thin air, Elise felt that unpleasant emptiness rise up within her again. It had been only a day since Tetsuko had gone to Kashima to help her family with something, and already Elise felt that familiar sensation, that knowledge that without her iron-blooded knight by her side, she felt incomplete. It wasn't that she needed Tetsuko, after all the events in Kashima had made that clear, but it was that she wanted Tetsuko, it was when the two of them were together that they were at their strongest and also at their happiest. And yet curiously enough Elise had been called away herself by a most peculiar request: Her mother had asked for her to visit her in Tokyo, and unlike the usual cheerful and upbeat nature of her mother it seemed there was a certain sense of urgency and seriousness in the request, to the point that Elise felt a little bit restless.
Taking a deep breath Elise tried to shake off the anxious feelings that rose in her heart and soon saw the landscape change once more from rural fields to the hustle and bustle of the streets of Tokyo, it seemed she was nearing her destination. Once the train arrived at the station Elise rose from her seat and grabbing a hold of her bag made her way outside.
Just like she had expected her mother was waiting outside, her car parked behind her. "Good afternoon Mom~" Her cheerful tone was greet by a soft smile from her mother who approached her, pulling both her arms around her in a tender embrace. "It's good to see you again my dear Eli~ Let's get in the car, we got a lot to talk about."
Elise nodded her head lightly in response as she moved over to the passenger seat of the vehicle and once seated and her belt fastened the two were ready to drive onto the streets of Tokyo. "I saw your performance at the Sports Festival." Elise couldn't help but freeze up for a moment, her expression clouded by a shadow for a moment as she turned her gaze away toward the window. "I see..."
Her mother continued to look on ahead as she continued speaking. "It's a pity that you lost during the second round." Elise couldn't help but sigh softly. No doubt she had disappointed her mother and the Principal by losing so early in the tournament...
"I'm proud of you." Elise couldn't help but blink in bewilderment as she turned toward her mother. "What do you mean--- I lost... it was a fight I could have won if..."
The car came to a halt at a traffic light as she answered Elise. "I know, when that boy, Kirk was it? When he tried to trap you inside his pouch he made a fatal mistake. I and Touma know all too well just how sharp those tentacles of yours can be. You could have easily forced your way out of his pouch by slicing a hole through it, or worse aimed to maim him by turning your tentacles against him while inside the pouch. However, that victory would have been at the cost of his safety, you might have ended up maiming him, or worse possibly left him with permanent damage to his body."
Elise felt herself turning speechless as her mother continued. "He might have won the duel, but to me your decision to refrain from unleashing your attack makes me believe that out of the two of you, you're the one who won when it comes to being a hero."
Elise couldn't help but chuckle bitterly at those words. "A hero? From my time at U.A I don't know for sure if most of my fellow students even know what a hero is meant to be. It's all so competitive, people care more about victory, glory, and fame than about helping people, and I nearly became one of them also. If not for the likes of Hachi-sensei and the stories I hear about Mia I wouldn't be too sure if the concept of heroism as we read in books and fairytales still exists."
Hearing her words Elise's mother mused softly. "Then are you unsure about wanting to become a hero yourself?" The question left Elise to ponder for a moment, not entirely certain on how to answer. "I'm not certain... I feel that if I want to help people, and keep supporting Tetsu that I need to become a hero."
The words made Elise's mother smile briefly. "Is that so? So you still desire to help people? Good, then what I have in mind might be perfect."
Elise blinked in confusion at her mother's words as the car stopped at a parking lot and Elise couldn't help but find her eyes widening in disbelief. "This is..."
Elise's mother nodded her head lightly in return. "Tokyo Hospital: The place where Thunder Shock killed your father, left me in a comatose, where you were treated after your fight against Nick Cross... It's also the place where you can become the type of hero you desire to be."
The words certainly were confusing to say the least, and the memories of those events left Elise's emotions in turmoil. However, as her mother left the car Elise started chasing after her, the two of them approaching what appeared to be an entrance for staff of the hospital.
"What do you mean 'become a hero'?" With confusion clearly plaguing her mind Elise could only rush after her mother who only answered her with a rather cryptic message. "You don't just want to become 'any' hero right?" The question made Elise pause as her mother turned around and looked her straight in the eye. "This is your chance Eli: your chance to become Tetsuko's hero."

| I'll become your guardian angel | | Elise couldn't help but feel hesitant as she followed her mother into the facility, and who could possibly blame her? The hospital was a place that in recent days had produced so many terrible memories for Elise, and yet the lass also felt compelled to follow her mother. The chance to become Tetsuko's hero, it was something Elise had always longed for, the very foundation for her desire to become stronger and remain at U.A, and yet at the same time Elise knew deep inside that it was not a guardian that Tetsuko sought, no... the role of knight had been a responsibility her lover had taken upon her.
Once they entered the hospital Elise noticed how quickly they had left behind behind the areas that were open for the public, and instead started to travel into the sections where all sorts of research was being conducted. "The reason I didn't ask for Luka to come with you is because this is a matter that involves only you Elise, we're almost there."
It didn't take much longer till the two arrived at a sealed door, a brief swipe of the keycard she had in her pocket allowing her mother to open the lock of the door, and now she had realized her destination, Elise's concern only grew: This particular place had two sections, the first was the office of her parents, and the second was her father's research laboratory.
"Why did you bring me here mom?" It was a question which led Elise's mother to pause for a moment, when finally she addressed a matter that had been quite difficult to approach so far. "I'm certain Tetsuko explained some things to you after your little date with her during the festival, right?"
Elise nodded her head briefly, thinking back about how sorrowful Tetsuko looked at that time, the knowledge of just how heavy a burden her lover carried on her shoulders being something which had haunted Elise's thoughts for quite a while. "If I recall right her mother is sick or something?"
However, her mother shook her head lightly and turned toward her, and the words that followed were like a thunderbolt that struck out of nowhere. "She isn't sick, she is disabled because of an intracranial injury."
A cold chill ran across her body as Elise asked hesitatingly. "Then do you mean that-" Her mother nodded her head sorrowfully as she continued. "Ever since that incident Tetsuko's mother hasn't been the same, and I'm certain that must be weighing heavily on the poor girl's heart."
A brain injury? How in the world did one expect her to help Tetsuko with that type of problem?! However, an idea quickly arose within her. "But mom, aren't you a brain surgeon? You're one of the best in the entire country!" Upon hearing her words Elise's mother smiled weakly and shook her head lightly in response to the statement. "What do you think I been trying to do all those years? Unfortunately, the damage is too deep for a full recovery to be possible, at the very least with the way medical science is currently."
As if a iron weight was latching onto her, Elise could feel her hope slowly drifting down into despair as she asked hesitatingly. "Then is there no way to help her?" However, in response to those hesitating words Elise's mother spoke firmly. "I didn't say there is no hope, remember your father's words: A doctor never despairs, especially in front of his patient."
Approaching her desk her mother seemingly pulled out a key and approached her as she continued speaking. "Your father was conducting research into a means to help people cope with the symptoms and consequences of intracranial injuries, surely you know where I am going with this?"
Elise nodded her head firmly as she felt the key being placed in her hands. "His research could help Tetsuko's mom also!"
A light nod was made by her mother who ushered Elise toward the door leading into her father's laboratory, and upon unlocking the door Elise stepped inside. It felt odd... in the past she used to visit this place so often, a place that felt so lively when her father was still alive, but now it felt somewhat cold and empty... Approaching her father's desk Elise opened the drawer with the key she had been given, and spotting a small electronic device similar to a tablet picked it up, a few pressed activating the system as Elise peered onto the various notes and documents that were stored on it.
"Those are all pharmaceutical recipes and medical treatment concepts but... they are incomplete!"
Turning toward her mother Elise couldn't help but feel as if her mother had known this already, especially judging from the somber look upon her face. "Indeed, your father died before he could complete his research."
Slowly her mother approached her, gently raising her arms to rest them on her shoulders as she looked at Elise, explaining further. "This is your father's legacy Elise. I'm confident that you're skilled and determined enough to complete the research of your father. You know all too well that Tetsuko doesn't need a knight to protect her, she needs a guardian angel to support and inspire her, besides the Shindou family has long helped us. Whether it are her parents, or Tetsuko herself, the Shindou family have always been our closest friends and saviors in our time of need, surely you felt this with your relationship with Tetsuko, right?"
Elise nodded her head firmly as her mother finished speaking. "Then it's about time that we return the favor, help Tetsuko save her mother."
----
A few hours had passed since then, and as evening settled in and Elise made her way back toward the dorms of U.A. she was quietly typing a message for a certain iron-blooded knight.
Tetsu, we need to talk... I'll be waiting for you at the dorm once you're back from Kashima.
This would be the start of a new adventure. | 1007 WORDS
