| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ They have been a magazine girl, not a newspaper girl. They have been aside of the world, sheltered and hidden, away from things that could ruin her until Rowan asked to please go to the hero school. Her mother considered to send her to her grandmother, hoping to change her mind or hoping that there might be one in England so that she would be safe from many things that Rowan did not wand and did not understand at all. Had Helena understood the consequences of going to U.A., she had not sent Rowan at all. But it was too late now. There was no point of return, there was nothing but going forward and even if Christmas was already three months passed, Helena had worries because Rowan did not seem to talk to her as before.
He is in jail, justice will be served. Standing up for quirkers, bah, it's ridiculous.
She had heard him when her mother had called her. Her father in the background, probably calling out to her mom or calling someone else. Lady her thoughts had gone to one person only. Which was ridiculous, she had more faith in him but she did not dare to admit and the only thing she could do was to search the internet, it was not necessary to look very far or long, the hits instantly showed up what she was afraid of. Of course, he could not text her back. She took a deep breath, why the hell did he get caught, so many articles speculating, not giving the right answer and she could not find the patience within her to actually search on, she only needed to know one thing:
Where.
When Lady finally found that she closed her laptop and stood up, all she needed was her keys and she could go, no one would text her that was important enough. No one would call her. She stared at Zuzu, who was hidden under the couch, stupid thing. Hating her for being so carefree and being herself fully, it was ridiculous. But it was time to put on that Rowan mask. She took the pins out of her hair, made sure there was no fold in her dark red dress, put on the right shoes and her leather jacket and headed out. She would first have to go to Tokyo and find her way there, which was difficult without a phone but she wanted to remain untraceable and she did not want them to know too much about her, she could show an ID, which was probably what they wanted. Finally arriving at her destination, she only said that she was a student from U.A. and used to be his friend, she wanted to look him in the eye and understand. They seemed hesitant, she used puppy eyes and they finally seemed to accept and let her in, calling forth the prisoner.
We are making a mistake.
Nah, we are not, you are.
Rowan needed to be shut down and she needed to tell him, Nick would understand their struggle, he would not be nice to her, even if she was the one in power now, she did not expect that but she would just see if it helped. |

Nick had lived in a cage his entire life; the only difference now was that the cage was more literal in the form of grubby white walls, a peeling ceiling and a barred window. Mother’s cage conversely could not be seen, but he felt its presence bearing down on him every second that passed. He knew nothing else.
He lay on the measly slab they had given him for a bed with his eyes firmly closed, though sleep evaded him. It had done so for quite some time by that point. He did not really mind; he was so devoid of new thoughts all he had left were nightmares, most of which consisted of Mother violently berating him for his failure – though this was not anything new for him either.
I’m weak. I’m so fucking weak. I deserve this. Who am I kidding thinking I have to get out of here? If I was as strong as I thought I was I wouldn’t be here in the first place.
These thoughts and more like them continued to circle around his head in an endless haze of the darkest, most self-hating negativity imaginable. They only ceased when he once again heard the creak of his cell door opening. Slowly, he opened his eyes and turned his head towards the heavily armed guards standing in the doorway.
“Another visitor?” he remarked. “My my, I’m a popular boy all of a sudden.”
For all his snark, however, icy cold dread immediately set in: what if it was Mother this time? This dread only worsened as he was reluctantly escorted to the same meeting room where he had spoken to that mysterious woman from before.
It’s really it this time, I’m going to di –
The guards brought him into the room and at once his mind was silenced.
“Ro – Lady!”
It was a miracle he did not trip over himself with how fast he sat down at the opposite side of the bulletproof glass. His eyes were wide and for the first time in months he looked somewhat close to actually being happy. “You – you actually came here to see me!” He sounded both delighted and unable to believe it.

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ She still stood there, her eyes looking at the man behind her, who stood at the door, how to talk with all those people here. She frowned and looked worried. Surely this was a mistake for her reputation but she did not care. She heard her name... her name, how did he know or was it the fact that she came here that it made more sense that it was her instead of Rowan. The coward would have never come here by herself. Her big surprised eyes settled down soon when she noticed that he seemed happy that she was there and a smile appeared on her face.
She needed to see him. That was one of the reasons why she came.
"Nick, I am so sorry." Why was she actually apologizing, "I mean..." She looked over her shoulder shortly, "I-I didn't know, I usually don't interest myself in the news but I heard my father and, my god are you okay?" Why was she talking so much about herself, she wished the bulletproof glass wasn't between them, she felt like it was a facade. Even worse than her so-called Rowan masks. She looked at her lap, she was sorry for multiple things but she did not dare to say and make this meeting worse than she probably just did with the way she started.
Of course, she came to see him! What was more important, someone who understood her as well as that she believed she understood him. She should not think about herself, those problems did not matter, she would find a way to get rid of Rowan for good but there were other things more pressing and more important. She looked back up at Nick, the worrying frown back on her face, what could she do, she was just a stupid lazy U.A. student who could not do a single thing. No matter how hard she trained, she would not be able to help him escape or anything. She heard the door and looked up behind her again, the guy left, but she was sure they would not leave them alone, or were they that stupid? |

Nick blinked, but she was still there. Even so he found it hard to believe. She cared. Maybe? Possibly? No. She must have just been after something; information, most likely, like the woman before her.
Yet she was there nonetheless, and a part of him found that comforting despite the rest of him doubting her sincerity. He wished so much the damn glass was not in the way so he could reach out and touch her, especially as she began to blame herself.
“It’s okay,” he said in a surprisingly soothing tone for someone like him. “You’re not to blame here at all. I’m the one who was weak enough to get caught and, well...” He glanced at the pathetic stump where his left arm had once been. “Have this happen to me. You can tell Miss Tsutsuji I’m very grateful.”
He sat back in his chair, unable to look at her directly as he let out a grave sigh and slowly shook his head. “I wish you didn’t have to see me in this state. This wasn’t how it was supposed to be at all. I guess I have to get stronger still.” He noticed the guard withdraw from the room and raised an eyebrow, but said nothing for the time being. Could the person who had sent the woman before still be paying them to ease off him? Yet still not enough to let him out. Typical.
“Did you see what I did?” he asked Lady. “What I said? What did you think?”

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ Shivers went down her spine, she did not come here to let him take the blame. Rowan was fighting her and it was upsetting but she was rather quiet now, probably because she believed they should not be here. What if the school knew, did the prison guards already call for U.A.? Who would reach over the phone and come and get her or would they call her father even if they did not know her name? "You are not weak!" She said too harsh, too shrill and she shook visibly as she clenched her hands into fists, holding on to the hem of her skirt, "You-you." She looked up as she realized what he just said, "Tsutsuji-sensei?" If Nick was weak and if Nick got caught, how would she ever be able to support him? How would she ever be able to do anything, she should train her power more often, she should become better, stronger, everything that needed to make her helpful in this case.
She couldn't stop frowning, her eyes trying to look for his but maybe that wasn't smart, there was this pain that she did not want him to see. She felt like she betrayed him even if she had not done anything. It was Rowan! That traitor, that coward. She wanted the bulletproof glass away now and she noticed how uncontrollable her quirk was, her hands turning hot, she would never be able to destroy that, nor would she want to because it would bring them into more trouble than getting it out. "I will help, you can use me. I can do something, I mean, I can't do much but..." She bit her lip, no idea what she was saying, she had been pathetic too, compared to Rowan.
Lady tried to sit down, show at least some status, something better, worthy maybe. "I did." She said softly, finally a smile appearing on her face. "You proved them wrong." Which was maybe not what the government thought, "We have a voice now, you took that nasty woman down." She wasn't sure if it was really Nick but even if it was Rowan during Semper Fi, her fear of water had unfortunately not changed. "If only everyone understood what it means, but they are blind sighted, the quirkers get to blame while it's not us who did it. They started it, why can't they see that?" She felt frustrated and sad because wasn't that the point. Wasn't that why people feared her hands and you only could tell if they knew her quirk, what about mutants? |

Nick felt genuine shock at her insistence that he was not weak: it was the first time in his life someone had told him he was not after such a failure, and he was at a loss how to even think of a response, staring at her blankly for far too long. Eventually, though, he shrank into himself and looked down at the ground. “But I am. If I wasn’t, I wouldn’t be here.”
He nodded his head in response to her surprise at Hachi being the one who injured him in such a drastic manner. “Yes, Miss Tsutsuji. She oh so kindly jammed her stinger straight through my shoulder and took my arm clean off. If that’s the kind of thing they’re teaching them in the support department I’d be very concerned about those people having my back.” Somehow he could still joke even in such bleak conditions. He was not entirely sure how he managed to himself – then again it was not completely a joke.
Any semblance of a joking mood rapidly shrivelled to nothingness as Lady proceeded to tell him many had failed to understand his message, confirming what the mysterious woman from before had said, however. He found himself shaking before he even knew it. Damn it all to hell. “Of course they are. I did all that, and for what? Next to nothing.”
Before prison he could have exploded all over the place with rage, but he had spent so long in isolation even his anger seemed meaningless now. It drained from him as quickly as it had risen. He went quiet for what felt like ages to him until finally he leaned as close to the glass as possible and at last looked her in the eyes.
“You have to make what I did worthwhile for me, Lady,” he said in a low tone in case the guards were listening in. “You need to stay at UA and grow stronger, you do, but you can still help by showing support for Abaddon anonymously online or whatever. Spread the word, that kind of thing. You’re all I’ve got.”

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ She met his eyes, feeling very bad that she yelled or well, spoke too loud. But if Nick was weak, what would make her ever able to reach anything. She could do nothing, nothing absolutely, totally, nothing if she could not even be a support or something because "I am sorry." She muttered, maybe too softly, words were difficult to find and too many emotions were overcoming. Where was Rowan and why was she quiet? Was she waiting for a surprise attack in the moment of Lady her weakness? "Tsutsji-sensei was just lucky. I don't know, you should just not give up on the idea now if you do... if you do then how will the rest of us ever find peace or power to move on, to fight on. Nick, I-" She looked away, not able to form words, it would be bad to say things like that, he would probably think she was lying already but she did need him and she did almost say that. If Nick wasn't there, how would she hold on in this fight between her and Rowan. Rowan who seemed to pity everyone and Rowan who seemed to care about everyone, Saiko, Miku, Melody and especially... him. Haru. He was a very annoying human being.
She shivered when she heard about the stinger and. She closed her eyes not to imagine what it must be like, feeling and just think about. She looked at him shortly again in surprise, not really getting the joke because the support department, they would never, she tilted her head."You are not alone right? You know that, right?" She decided to say, she did not know if he had to hear that or not, but she felt like to say it because it was her truth and even if that meant only her, that was good enough.
She waved her hands rapidly once they continued their conversation and Nick seemed to misunderstand her. "No, no. I think you made a point, I think they got it, not everyone will agree but not everyone will ever. But the people out there, like me, like Sa- like others, they might see this as an opening to rebel themselves, maybe not aggressively but just no longer sit and wait for justice to come because it will not. It's up to us to take it and force it upon the world right, away with the... you-know-who." She whispered the last words, after all, they were in the prison, the guards knew she was a U.A. student, what if Geist-sensei or Nakahara-sensei would come and pick her up in minutes.
She looked up when she heard the chair and stood up herself when Nick got close to the bulletproof window. She did hear and she nodded, it felt like she had no other choice but to leave, she did not want that. She placed her hand against the glass as if she could be closer to him, staring in his eyes. It wasn't fair. She frowned, worryingly, surprised that she would be the only one he had, "I would do all I can." |

You are not alone.
Four words Nick had never heard before in his life. Ever. His jaw opened and closed uselessly for far too long as he stared at her as though she had grown another head. All his life he had felt the opposite: alone, completely and utterly, and the few people that actually were around him such as Mother and Goro had done their best to reinforce this feeling.
“You – you really mean that?”
He could feel tears building rapidly behind his eyes. What a pathetic sight that would be, yet he could not stop them. Nor could he stop himself from doing what he did next. The growth on his back spat out its black fluid that consumed his body and solidified into his insectoid armour. He effortlessly shattered the glass between them with a single strike and pounced through the shards towards her. His aim was to seize her and kiss her. In his armoured state. Hopefully Lady did not have a problem being aggressively smooched by an insect.
Not that it mattered. The doors to the room immediately flew open as more guards poured in and surrounded Nick with their guns aimed right at him. Nick hurriedly threw himself to the ground, his armour receding from his body as he raised his hands in surrender. “I’m not escaping! I’m sorry; I lost control for a moment there!”
Whoops.

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ Had she said something bad? Was he going to laugh at her? Send her away or would she have fallen for a trap she had not seen coming, did he care? She half doubted he cared because she was afraid he did not and that she indeed as a silly little girl had made that mistake. She fumbled with her fingers, at least the burning power had seeped out of them, so that was no longer a problem. She clenched her hands into fists, let it go and do it again, her eyes switching between looking at that as well as looking at Nick.
She stared at him when Nick finally spoke to him and nodded. Yes, yes! She did but then there was that little bi.. and Haru and ugh it made her go crazy and get angry and so many other things that she did not want to point out to the person in this room. She wanted him to know that she really supported him, only him, who cared about the outside world. Maybe she should just stay here only to be away from the outside world. Ridiculous thoughts, even she knew, hence why she did not say them out loud.
As they both stood close to the window, Lady's eyes grew as big as she can as she noticed, the armour. She had not seen it before like that and she stared at it how effortless Nick shattered the glass between them and she wanted to say that he should not be so stupid, this would bring problems but she let it come rush over her and just accept a kiss. Why care about an armour, it was Nick, after all, she just. She turned her head away when she heard the slamming of multiple doors into their room.
Had they seen what happened? Had they heard what happened? One of the guards pointed the gun at her, they were probably very unsure what she had done in the progress to make this happen. "No, no." She said in hushed whispers as she followed the example of getting on her knees on the ground, scooting close to Nick because even if it would only be seconds, it would be seconds more than with the glass between them.
What would happen now? |

No no no no no no. This was bad. This was worse than bad. He may not have been pumped full of bullets as he had expected but the way Lady threw herself down beside him filled him with even greater dread.
“Don’t hurt her!” he cried, a level of panicked desperation in his voice he had never heard before. “She’s got nothing to do with anything; she’s just a friend from school and I missed her so much I wanted to kiss her! That’s it!”
He sounded so pathetic and he resented everything about it. He was not supposed to have become such a grovelling wreck. This was not Abaddon.
“We oughta blow this terrorist bastard’s head off right here right now,” he heard one of the guards growl.
“We can’t kill a surrendering prisoner,” said another guard. “Just take him back to his cell and get the girl the hell out of here. Call UA or whatever.”
Nick’s arms were roughly seized and he was dragged onto his feet. He looked back at Lady as the guards forced him away from her; there was so much more he wanted to say. He would get out eventually. He would see her again, he promised. He had missed her so much more than he had realised. He was so sorry.
None of these words came, however, before he was pulled out of the room back towards his cell.

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ She looked at Nick, with fear in her eyes, she did not know herself but she did feel afraid. What would they do to her, she came here to see him, things escalated pretty fast and now what would they do. He even felt the need to protect her now, but it was her fault for coming here. She turned her face to the guard who had the weapon towards her and she shook visibly. Yes, yes, she just wanted to kiss him, that's it. She quickly turned her eyes when she heard a guard speak, "No! I will leave, I go, I am sorry." She turned to look at Nick if only she... if only she had been better if she could do something. Someone took her by her arm at the same time that they took Nick, but she only had eyes for him. They would hurt him, they would do something bad to him, only because she got here. "Nick!"
She should have known, she tried to see him, she tried to stay even if she had said that she would go but they pulled her along, she had to apologize, she would wait, she would do as he told her. She had even missed what they were doing, finally, they sat her in one of the interrogation rooms. They could just lock it until someone came to pick her up, they were not letting her just go. Which made her yell and made her angry. She had done literally nothing wrong, she did not want to blame Nick but at this point, it would have been easy for her if it would help her to get out.
She froze when she heard someone in the hallway saying that they called U.A. and that a teacher was coming. Oh no, no that was bad. |

Nathan had been sitting comfortably in his chair, feet up on his desk as he studied a manilla folder. One of several that were splayed out on the desk, each contained a dossier concerning the students of 1-A. Apparently they had been a problem class if word around the school was to be trusted. "Ah man...what a pain."The Captain let out a loud Cuck! as he shook his head. His chicken companion hopped up on the desk and scattered some of the files onto the ground, which garnered a soft chuckle from the teacher. "Yeah, you said it Captain. It looks like we need to whip these kids inta-"
His phone began to vibrate, rudely cutting off his musings. It came from his phone and at the worst possible time too. The man had a sizable workload having to balance discipline and study guides. How was he supposed to get anything done!? The robotic figure aggressively yanked the phone out and checked who it was. It was a transfer call from the reception. What the hell? What in blazes could they want?Nathan coughed to clear his throat, shushing Captain before clicking the receiver button. "Yeah? North here.""Jaegar, the police are on the phone. They want to have a word with you."He lowered the phone for a moment and pinched the bridge of his nose, swearing under his breath. Alrighty, which one is it this time?"Put 'em threw, darlin'."
A couple of beeps ticked by as he tapped his finger on his desk to the rhythm of the beat. Finally it clicked and a harsh voice came through. "Hello? Is this a UA teacher?" "Yes sir. This is Jaegar. How can I help you?"
The man explained the situation in a swift, curt manner. Nathan was already starting to get a head ache. He informed the officer that he would be down as soon as he could and stuffed the phone back in his pocket. "C'mon, Captain. We got a jailbird who needs springin'."
Captain hopped on his shoulder with another loud Cuck! and they were on their way down to the prison. As he walked in, he was greeted by a very large officer who frisked him up and down. Needless to say, it was a long and difficult endeavor that Nathan would have to go through. He didn't know much about this Nick Cross character, aside from what he had gleaned from documents and reports on the news. Shit went down at the Tokyo5 and he got his ass kicked hella hard by Tsutsuji-san. Honestly, Nathan couldn't give two shits about the little bastard, but he hurt a member of UA. He murdered innocent people. There was a line for every single person in life and Nick had crossed his. The teacher shook hands with the man in charge and politely requested to view the footage. It was a long shot, but he'd thought to ask. Fortunately the police were buddy buddy with UA, for the most part, and pulled up the record of the conversation. He would let Rowan sweat for a bit in the interrogation room as he gathered intel on the situation. From what he could tell, the girl seemed confused. She was lost and scared...and infatuated. Damnit, she's in love with the monster.
He replayed the tape a couple more times, paying attention to the minute details. Body gestures and voice control. Nathan didn't claim to be an expert on kids, but this he understood. The question was: How would he handle it? Nathan was finally allowed to pass, but the guards made it a point that Captain had to stay. He just leaned in close to the man at the desk, glaring with menace. Captain hopped on the man's head and Nathan poked him in the forehead. "Don't touch a feather on her head. She's a lady. Now open the damn door already."
Nathan stepped into the interrogation room and gently shut the door, as not to upset the girl. He just stood there by the door for a minute while studying her. She was just a kid, for crying out loud. Kids shouldn't be in a place like this, treated like common criminals. Eventually he came forward and grabbed the chair, flipping it around so that he sat down with the back in front of him. The teacher rested his arms lazily on the backing. "Hey there, friendo! Man, you really shit in the cereal."He nodded at the unprofessional comment, but kept focus on her. "Yes sirree! You done gone and used those things humans call emotions. They can really screw with you and make you see and do things you regret further down the road."
Nathan thunked the side of his head with his forefinger. "It's why I'm all Robby the Robot. Can't be bothered, ya dig?"He knew that this conversation was being recorded. He also knew that Rowan knew that they were being recorded. So it was uncomfortable for all of them and Nathan wouldn't be getting through to her until she felt some semblance of safety or comfort. "Sorry. Bad joke. And I know...this isn't the time for jokes. Now, I'm not sure if we were ever properly acquainted with one another. You know, mano ah mano. I'm Nathan and I happen to be your homeroom teacher. Seems things got a little...heated."
He tapped his finger on the table before standing up from the chair, coming around slowly to stand next to her. "Look, neither one a' us wants to talk with these squares hanging around. So what'dya say we blow this popsicle stand and I take you back to UA. Maybe we can chat?"
Nathan's joking demeanor had dropped and had been replaced by a far more sincere tone. "I just wanna talk...would you give this old man the time of day?"
