HISTORY Humans mystified Riffin. His experiences with them have been nothing but perplexing. How is it that this race has so many instances of arguing over the most trivial of things? Surely they would learn from their mistakes and focus on the world's more pressing problems? For as long as Riffin could remember, he had been ostracized for having wings on his back. It had been harmless at first, but as time went on, the curious stares turned to ones of disdain, and further devolving into verbal and physical abuse. Despite this, Riffin had never lashed out, or complained or felt sorry for himself or even gotten mad. All he did was take it, bewildered as to why he was being treated so differently from everyone else. The only on time he could ever recall retaliating was when there had been an actual threat to his life. It was the first time in his life that he had ever been afraid. He didn't want to die. No one wants to die. Had it not been for his wings stopping the knife from cutting too deep, he might not have survived. Maybe if he didn't have his wings, the attempt on his life might not have never happened. Who truly knows? Riffin went through most of his early childhood growing under the hateful eye of an anti-quirker society, but he was comforted by his parents who, fortunately for him, accepted him for who he was. At the age of four, Riffin experienced for the first time what it was like being an older brother. Up until that point, everything had been bigger than him, and had been out to get him. But by the time they had gotten home, his baby brother was playing with his wings. Even then, Riffin did not understand. Why did everyone else treat him differently, and why did his family treat him differently from everyone else? He enjoyed the time he spent with his father, mother and brother, but it was a thought that constantly lingered in his mind. Riffin and his brother grew together, played together, fought with each other, and bonded in the way that only siblings can. His brother once voiced out how he wished he could fly like his older brother, to which he suggested that they become pilots together, leading them into the Air Force. The military had been no kinder to Riffin than the rest of the world, though the difference this time was his recently-attained massive height had discouraged most from anything more than a scowl. As the rigorous hours of training turned into months, into years, the two siblings made progress. Their enlistment turned into their jobs. Their bodies got tougher. Their fights got more intense. Riffin was rarely selfish, but one night, he had gotten into an argument with his brother on certain promotion that had piqued their interest. They both wanted it, since it would further their careers, which they were both passionate about. However, only one could have it, and the next thing they knew, their shouting had turned into a brawl, resulting in several bruises and cuts on the both of them. It was on that same night that they had been scheduled to scout out a war zone, and their usual brotherly exchanges had been replaced by silence up until the moment that a stray rocket knocked Riffin's brother's plane right out of the sky. There was a first time for everything, and it was the first time Riffin had ever felt such a bitter pain in his heart. |
