The festival outside the school was in full swing, and skipping through the stalls, takoyaki stick half-out of her mouth, was Miyu Sasaki. She’d spent a long while training desperately to match up with her classmates before the cavalry battle, but this afternoon she’d decided to give herself a break. Her arms still ached a little from the morning’s weight-lifting, but overall she was feeling very chipper.
Had she put an entire day away for relaxing, she would’ve popped down to Akihabara, but she figured the festival would be a suitable replacement. While festival food and games were a lot of fun, the most she’d seen with Omegaman on were a couple cheap plastic masks at one of the stalls.
This thought dwelled on her mind as she passed another row of stalls, only to whirl around at the passing sight of red scales and claws. It wasn’t hard for her to locate the person they were connected to, as he stuck out from the crowd like a sore thumb. Her jaw dropped, and she only just managed to catch the takoyaki stick before it hit the ground. A T-Rex mutation! A kaiju!
“A kaiju!” She shouted, running to catch up with him. “I mean, T-Rex! T-Rex man!” Considering she’d never seen him before, it seemed more than likely that he was a foreigner, and perhaps he didn’t speak japanese all that well. Maybe he didn’t even know what kaiju meant-
Or… Or maybe he did. Standing just below him, staring up with wide eyes, Miyu noticed the Omegaman Z hat sitting precariously on the T-Rex’s head, clearly sized for a human and not a big lizard.
“Hey! Heeeeeey!” She waved her arm as high up as she could, hoping to get his attention.

Lucas McTavish was an odd sight, to say the very least; an actual extinct beast brought back to life through the power of a freak genetic mutation. He was used to turning heads wherever he went. Used to the occasional scream or people damn near pissing themselves when they saw him (sometimes they actually did). He knew he could not do much about it, so he had long ago learned to tune it all out.
An enthusiastic cry of ‘kaiju’ was new to him, however. That stopped him right in his tracks. “Eh?”
He turned his great bulky body around to come face to face with a girl in a UA uniform who looked positively thrilled to see him. That certainly made one hell of a change (not to mention it was the polar opposite of how his previous encounter with a UA student had gone). And she called him a kaiju! Lucas loved the big rubber monsters and their many, many films and television shows, as his newly-purchased Omegaman Z hat reflected. “Hell yeah I’m a kaiju!” he loudly and proudly declared in his thickly-accented voice.
Wait, shit. He should have been speaking Japanese. All of the visiting British students had been given Japanese lessons in preparation. Lucas’s mind scrambled to remember how the hell Japanese actually went; “Hello. Kaiju I am yes. Name is Lucas McTavish. Or, err, McTavish Lucas. Yes. Your name is?”

Miyu beamed up at him as he responded in English. She didn’t quite grasp what he’d said, but at the very least she understood the word “kaiju” and his enthusiasm. That quickly turned out to be a non-issue, as the T-Rex shifted into endearingly broken japanese. He was most certainly one of the British students, but he also knew what kaiju meant!
“It’s-uh, really cool to meet you, Lucas! My name is Miyu Sasaki!” She yelled, talking a little slower than usual so that he could maybe understand her easier. “So, uh, where’d you get that hat from? Have you been to Akihabara yet or did you, uh, import that to England?”
“Oh, but, uh, even if you haven’t been yet, you should look around here more! There’s some really cool stalls around here!” Miyu turned around, as if setting off for one in particular, before freezing in place and putting a finger to her chin in thought. She’d intended to lead Lucas to the target shooting stall that had been offering Omegaman masks that she’d passed earlier, but she didn’t remember the direction. ‘Oh well’, she thought, ‘we’ll definitely find it if I just head back the way I came.’
And off she went, motioning for Lucas to follow her. As they walked, she continued their conversation, almost straining her voice at times to try and keep it above the chatter of the crowd around them. “So, uh, I might not look it right now, but my quirk actually makes me really big as well! It’s a transformation one, though, and I’m not quite as big as an Omegaman, but maybe someday I will be!”

Lucas swelled up with glee; back home in Britain, tokusatsu was a niche interest and the likelihood of meeting another tokusatsu fan was up there with the likelihood of being abducted by aliens on the same day you won the lottery and the Prime Minister randomly turned up at your house for dinner. He would be lying if he said he had not donned his Omegaman hat hoping it would attract attention from fans in Japan, because surely there had to be more of them in the genre’s native country, and apparently it had worked!
“Hell of the yeah Akihabara I have been to!” he declared in his wonky Japanese, which was not helped at all in its clarity by his Scottish accent. “It is the first place went to I did when off plane I got! So many things bought hours it would take to show you it all, not just hat!”
He also had purchased Night Driver Genius’s transformation belt, just about anything he could find to do with Power Squadron Brave Roar (because naturally the dinosaur-themed Power Squadrons were his most favourite of all), multiple figures of Kamirex and his kaiju brethren and numerous tokusatsu posters, but he had little clue how to explain all of this to her in her native language. Curse his poor language skills; even back at the Institute other languages were far from his strongest subject.
Regardless, he followed his newfound friend through the stalls. This was already going a hell of a lot better than his previous encounter with a UA student had. Why could more UA students not be like this girl? Then things would have been so much easier for him.
“You’re like an Omegaman?” he said with genuine amazement. “That’s so awesome! I wonder does Kamirex that make me?” A particular stall caught his attention and his head swivelled to look in its direction. “Hey look, Omegaman masks! It's you!”

Lucas's enthusiasm was infectious, and Miyu's grin only widened as he talked about Akihabara. It had been a while since she'd last been, since she'd been attempting to save money up for her hero suit, but now the temptation to return was threatening to win her over. “Yeah… I don't have a ton of money right now, and most of my stuff's at home, but I have some kaiju figures I bought with me back in my dorm room.” Miyu said. Lucas's japanese was definitely wonky, but she didn't have much trouble correcting it in her own head and understanding it. “Yeah, I guess you are like Kamirex!” Miyu giggled a little. “Have you ever tried to cosplay as him? I had a halloween costume but it got ruined.” She wasn't too torn up about the loss, considering she'd ended up making a good friend at the same time. She hopped a little to turn around along with Lucas, and nodded proudly as the target shooting stall caught her eye. “Yeah! Though, they don't have the newest one, Tora. Have you seen him? He's the first mutant face actor they've hired, so both him and the suit have...” she stuck her hands to her head, emulating cat ears, “these cute tiger kitty ears!” She thought for a second, then turned back to Lucas. "They still use miniatures for all the giant scenes 'n stuff, but I've seen people online saying they should just hire giant quirkers and make, like, life-size fake buildings out in the usual quarry or something. But that's just disrespecting the craft that goes into making the miniatures. I wanna be an Omegaman someday, but I don't want to make the ones who can't really grow big look less cool, y'know? Because they're still heroes either way."
