"Make sure Grandpa goes to sleep and doesn't stay up for too long, alright?" "Got it!" "Also, make sure he won't drink anything too strong! I assume you know how his liver has been..." "Yup, yup!" "One more thing! Uh, make sure he doesn't start shouting at..." "Oh come on, dear, which of you has lived longer with him now?" "W-well I am his..." "Pfff, don`t play with the details, I believe Kirk knows exactly how your father acts these days, Don´t you?" "Yes, mom! I definitely do!" "Grumble..." "Hear that? Even Doohan himself agrees?" "I know, I know... But Kirk, remember, party in moderation! If you want you can uh... leave him alone... But I would suggest othervise, just in case!" "Man, your father is being such a party pooper!" "Hey now, don`t mess with the hair! It took me like, 30 minutes...!" "Just have fun in the best way you see possible, alright? Its your first half a year passed! Thats something to celebrate!" "Yeah, it sure is!" "We will call you after it passes over here! Although, you might be already asleep by then. We will call you in the morning!" "I can do that too!" "Of course! Now... Smile James!"
"HAPPY COMING NEW YEAR!" "Happy new year to you too!"
The friendly faces of his parents vanished from the screen, as Kirk proceeded to lean onto his seat and groaned. He could hear the tires of a familiar wheelchair rolling up behind him. "Pfeh, lucky they haven`t heard what has been happening over here it seems..." Doohan rubbed his wrinkly head, like recovering from a headache. "Same drivel each year..." Kirk couldn't help but shrug, not that he agreed. However, the old man proceeded to tap him on the shoulder. "Anyways, time to eat. Not exactly a feast like on christmas, but should be plenty to fill us up, right?" Kirk proceeded to hop into standing, immediately starting move towards the kitchen. Doohan couldn't help but smirk a little bit.
The meal was pretty usual by the house standard: Mashed potatoes and meatballs, with some cabbage, tomatoes and cucumber as a side, with a big bowl of gravy to make it a bit fancier. Not exactly the usual meal for japanese folk. However, with the duos taste buds, this tended to go down easier. As kirk pretty much filled his plate to the brim, Doohan took only about half in comparison. And as Kirk dug in, Doohan lowered his head under the table, as he reached out for a dark bottle with bright white label, putting it onto the table. He proceeded to pour himself a mug of it, as he span the mug about... and proceeded to sniff the clear liquid. "Bah..." He proceeded to try a sip, and then smacked his lips together with a grumpy look. "Guess I am gonna follow your dads recommendations this time... These japanese 'Sakes' or what they are called taste like grass." He placed the bottle back under the table. "Celebratory sips my buttocks..."
Doohan had always been the sort of guy with a dirty mouth, even while Kirk was around. However, for some reason he seemed almost doubly as grumpy compared to the usual demeanors. "Atleast the foods great!" "Of course it is! If there is something we both know it's good minced meat by a glance!" Kirks sentence made him crack a smile as he speared a meatball and outright dipped it in the mashed potatoes, as he poured gravy on top of it.
However, as the meal went on, discussions started coming up. "Your moms true though. That's first half of your first year in a hero school done." Kirk stopped eating almost instinctively. He knew that whenever school was the topic it was a good idea to pay attention! "Think you've learned anything useful?" Kirk scratched his head, while looking away for a moment. "Well yeah, uh... obviously! I didn't get this sort of workout back home, you know!" "aha?" "AND YOU KNOW I'VE BEEN S-STUDYING!?" "Hehe, not exactly the point! I know how your grades in everything except PE are." Kirk blushed awkwardly, scratching his head a bit faster, trying to avoid eye contact. "Look, don't feel bad about it. As long as you keep PASSING, that's the important thing. I am actually surprised how good of a grade you got from biology this time..." Kirk breathed out in relief, Doohan smirking in answer. The boy had a bad tendency to think he was in trouble if something was brought up still...
"I am more asking about how have you been enjoying it." Now that question Kirk could answer with relative Ease! "Of course! Got many dudes and bros and everything! Albeit I've also got kind of many people telling me to keep quiet a bit." Doohan chuckled. "Perhaps they will learn to talk clearly too!" "Yeah!" Doohan outright laughed at Kirks reaction. It was like he had taken his joke seriously. Kirk just watched in confusion for a while, as he continued eating. "Well, if that is what you think, never mind." Doohan proceeded to eat as well, as a moment of quiet followed...
However, Kirk couldn't help but wonder what he had meant by that... Even he thought that he was being a bit obvious about something bugging him... however, since it was new years, his head was soon filled with other things. The idea of just staying in the house for the entire event seemed boring to him. But of course, leaving his grandpa alone on such a day would be rude too. Naturally, it lead into a simple question from him: "You know, maybe they have some sort of festival in city square again! We could go and check it out and...!" "No. We are staying home today." Kirks excitement was shot down so quickly that he froze, just blinking for a moment. "Uh, why...?" "Because that will just ruin my good mood."
...Now, Kirk was used to grandpa being grumpy... it was pretty usual sort of stuff. However, as they finished eating and he just rolled over to the living room, just to sit near the window without turning on the television... Well that was almost weird! He honestly always wondered, what he did when he was left alone in the house, since it just seemed so boring to just sit around... And that was not something Kirk wanted his grandpa to feel! "Come on, fresh air will do you good!" "...It will make me even more sick than I already am with the cold..." "Well, uh! SNACKS! I can go grab some snacks and...!" "You don't even like sugar that much... besides, it tastes horrible!" "Uhm, uuuh... FIREWORKS! I wanna see some fireworks! Reminds me o...!" "ALRIGHT, I GET IT!" ...Sometimes Kirks grandpa could be even louder than Kirk himself... Doohan proceeded to roll over to the door and started putting his winter clothes on. "If you feel like we HAVE to go outside, We will go to the park! Understood!?" "Y-YES SIR!" ...Kirk realized he had done a mistake... You'd think he'd have learned after all these years not to figuratively push his grandpa. But sometimes just the excuse of wanting to help was enough to make him do these sort of things.
And as Doohan had predicted... it was cold outside. Very cold. However, with the thick clothing Kirk had on, and the fact that he had to push his grandpa around, warmed atleast himself up enough to not care about it. Doohan, however, was leaning to his arm a little bit frustrated... he didn't want to do this at all... Around them there were little bangs and booms, nothing dangerous, just early bird fireworks launching to the skies. The colourful sight had Kirk turning his head from side to side. Occasionally the explosion was so cool, that he glanced towards his grandpa, wondering if he had seen it, but the grumpy attitude continued... And Kirk kept silent. The only sound, was snow crunching under their feet.
The park and the very same football field that Kirk had met Tetsuko around turned about to be a lovely space for some other folks in the neighborhood to watch the fireworks as well. Some families, some people just alone to enjoy the show, someone even selling coffee and hot cocoa, it made for a great venue for this sort of thing! Or for something romantic! Not that Kirk was here for anything like that. He stopped pushing his grandpa, as he left him sitting on his wheelchair in the middle of the walkway. "Well, here we are!" He pointed his arm towards the dark sky. It was hard to see whether it was cloudy or starry because of the occasional bang. "Yes, yes... very nice..." Doohan mumbled. He shivered a bit. "O-OH! I'll go and grab you a coffee! Gimme a moment!"
Doohan lifted his hand to try and stop him, but Kirk was already on his way... leaving the old man alone and looking towards the dark sky. He should have known there was no stopping Kirk... he had lived with him for ten bloody years. and for 8 of them he had always tried to look good in his eyes... And honestly he did. He looked like a picture perfect police cadet... at age 16! It was almost all the good genes had skipped his father and plunged into him instead... Yet... somethings haunted him currently... Things he had tried to be a little bit less obvious about but now he was starting to just feel guilty about it. He was able to keep this stuff inside himself during christmas but...
"Here you go! H-h-HOT coffee!" Kirk was clearly struggling keeping the cup in his hands, as he ran back towards his grandpa... only to see his head nodded downwards. "Grandpa! You alright!?" Doohan raised his head and sighed. "Of course I am. You said you had coffee?" He accepted it and took a sip... As he looked at Kirk all seriously. "Ugh, I should have known this places coffee ain't good!" He lamented, turning his head away a bit.
"I wanna ask you something... And this time I want you to answer truthfully: Do you feel comfortable in U.A?"
Kirk was taken by surprise. "Uh well... Yeah! Yeah I do, really I do!" He said... but quickly turned his head away... "But?" It was Kirks turn to Sigh... "Well... Let's just say that... it's not all about being buff and strong there! Like, so many dudes there have such cool stuff but..." He stopped, as he sat down in the snow. "I dunno... sometimes I just feel like I don't belong with a quirk like mine, you know... eugh... I dunno..." Even implying his grandpa understood something as weird as "Your quirk is better than mine" just made him feel dumb even discussing it. The guy hated most quirkers altogether... Kirk was propably the only quirker he didn't mind around him too much... Doohan noticed his mumbling.
"You see... this half a year didn't go well at all for me..." Doohan said, as Kirk turned his head, almost worried at what would come next. "I came into a land where I didn't understand anything at all... even now I don't understand half of the things that the television says to me. I need to talk to my son and his wife through a PC if I ever wanna hear them. My favourite brands don't exist here. This isn't the place I lived in for years. THIS is not the place either of us grew up in! And my wife..." He went quiet for a while, as he rubbed his eyes... That was one thing he wouldn't push onto him today...
"And lately, whenever I open the television, I just see all these bad things happening... those soldiers walking around, shooting children... a masked man telling me how he is going to beat my fucking head in... and in all that a giant fricking siren for all to hear! And for what? Apparently an accident, that gave people heart attacks!" He took a sip of the coffee. Kirk was stunned, just trying to process all this info... "Two of those things literally hate me for what I am..." He sighed... Semper fis news bulletings had pretty much shown him a picture of what he propably looked like to Kirk in those first two years when he showed up at his doorstep with his no good son... "I don't feel safe here... I know the world is mostly people like you now... but it is so hard to see it as a good thing that people hate folk like me now..." Kirk had a hard time saying anything proper... just rubbing his gloves together... "Well uh... Why did we come here then?"
"That's why I ask: Do you want to be here?"
Kirk was quiet. His own troubles felt a little bit smaller in comparison... "Well... I think I do?" "You think, huh?" Doohan took one more sip of his coffee... "Stand up, idiot!" "Huh!?" Doohan outright grabbed his arm, as Kirk bounced quickly back up, with huge amount of colourful explosions bursting, with the people on the field cheering! The new year had started.
"Now, I want you, to make a new years promise to me..." "O-Oh yeah! I hadn't thought one up yet...!"
"If you ever... EVER... feel like you can't do this. Or something pushes you over the edge, so that you don't want to do this anymore... You tell me. Immediately." Kirk blinked, and Doohan nodded. "And we will go home immediately. No questions asked. That is my promise." Doohan smiled, as he looked towards the fireworks... He had gotten all of those worries out of himself, and felt like he had given something for Kirk to rest about as well. Kirk on the other hand put his hands in his pockets trying to process what he had said. "No worries grandpa! You know me! I try!" Both had gotten something printed on their mind. For Kirk... It would mean a lot of work next year to stand up to his expectations. And that was gonna be his promise.
"Happy new year, lad." "Happy new year Grandpa!"
"HAPPY COMING NEW YEAR!" "Happy new year to you too!"
The friendly faces of his parents vanished from the screen, as Kirk proceeded to lean onto his seat and groaned. He could hear the tires of a familiar wheelchair rolling up behind him.
