The words had sliced, deeper than any blade could possibly do.
The pain, in a way it was unbearable, to be back where she started, on a path by herself which seemed lithered with only darkness. To Elise there was no pain as immense as this, even if she had her brother to rely on, had some people she called friends... did Tetsuko truly believe they could fill the hole she would leave, that they could ever replace the place within her heart that had belonged exclusively to Tetsuko Shindou? If she thought that this was possible, then Tetsuko Shindou might as well had been a fool.
Like a princess, Elise had been helpless, vulnerable in the absence of her knight, and as such the words that were spoken hurt her far more than anything else could do. Perhaps calling herself Tetsuko's princess at this point might had been wrong. A princess wouldn't be abandoned, a lord wouldn't have been left behind. But then what was she? Was she still anything to Tetsuko? It terrified the young Eisenberg, although at the same time the urge to run still remained, to run away from this pain and suffering, but it was all futile. Dropping her shoulders in dejection she turned her gaze away from the iron-blooded girl.
Where had she gone wrong? The germanic lass tried to find the answer, desperately seeking through memories to find the answer she sought, but nothing came to mind. What purpose was there in a future if it wasn't spend together with Tetsuko?
Was this her punishment? To become someone who could only recall the warmth of her past, to remember the happiness that Tetsuko had once brought upon her? It pained her to think that the future had been robbed of her in such a cruel fashion, and that the past would serve as a reminder of what she once had, what she once longed for, things that seemed so far out of reach. Perhaps... Perhaps it had all been a childish dream, maybe there had only been a fool's hope, but Elise von Eisenberg would have rather remained a foolish child, than to experience this, to feel those emotions and hear those words uttered by the one she loved the most.
Perhaps this selfish girl really had been delusional to think she could find the answers she sought, obtain the things she desired. Without a lover, without a knight, without 'her' by her side... What was even left of the identity that made up Elise von Eisenberg. As both were plagued by their own thoughts it seemed that a wiser presence would decide to interfere in what otherwise might had become a destructive conclusion to their tale.
Her gaze shifted lightly at the man who commented about the trees, the way he chimed up and exclaimed how he found it to be a real shame that the trees were torn down in favor of expanding society, and Elise could only remain quiet at his remark, yet she did notice the strange look, the grin on his face barely noticed by the girl. Who in the world was this man? He seemed quite different from the typical masters of the Shindou, and yet the blade on his waist seemed to suggest he was one, at the very least the presence of the man didn't feel like an ordinary one to her.
The girl remained quiet as Tetsuko and the man exchanged words, revealing that the foreigner was unwilling to reveal just how exactly he had tracked down the pair. Still, to think that he was still so adamant about them enjoying ice-cream together, it felt so odd... what was there left to enjoy in this coldness? However, when he suddenly addressed her with his impeccably pronounced German the burgundy-haired lass her body jolted lightly, her gaze lifted up at him as she finally spoke, answering him back in the very same language that he had used to address her with mere moments ago. "Ich fühle mich leer und verlassen, wie eine Prinzessin, die ihren Ritter verloren hat." Indeed, she felt empty and abandoned, like a princess who had just lost the knight who had sworn to protect her. Althoguh she had chosen to add her hometown accent and make some of the terms more difficult to understand, aware that Tetsuko knew a few Germanic phrases from what Elise had taught her, but at this point it would be difficult for her to comprehend what was said.
When he introduced himself as Gai the burguny-haired lass's expression showed hints of confusion, the further explanation surely would have made her giggle if she was in her usual mood, but this was far from usual, so instead when he addressed her in those German words once more the Germanic-lass merely nodded her head in response. She didn't know what he wanted to talk to her about, but anything to get her away from this suffering was a welcome distraction.
However, when Tetsuko commanded the man to take them to her grandfather, and Gai protested in his typical eccentric manner, walking off it seemed something odd happened. By the time Tetsuko turned toward her Elise made a brusk paced walk past her, clearly avoiding looking back at her or answering her. To one it might had looked like she was ignoring Tetsuko, but the iron-blooded knight would no doubt notice the tears still fresh on her cheeks, the consequences of just how deep her 'blade' had struck.
While she might had been willing to come along, it seemed Elise no longer possessed the fortitude and will to approach Tetsuko on this matter, instead merely walking behind Gai, her gaze still aimed low at the ground. To Tetsuko the sight would no doubt be familiar, distant memories of a lonely girl who was left all by herself at their school, the girl she had sworn to protect, the same one who now felt like she had been cast aside..

She truly wished she could explain things.
Deep down, Tetsuko genuinely desired the chance to simply tell Elise why this had to happen. Why the Eisenberg girl's only choice was to stop relying on her failed samurai. Why that same swordswoman's only true path was to wander into the solitude of that snowy, hellish landscape, bearing that burden alone as she trudged on. Why Tetsuko... Couldn't look back, no matter how much she wanted to. Maybe, if Tetsuko could explain all these things, Elise might accept this inevitability a bit more easily. Maybe, she might come to realize just how much pain she could be spared by realizing what Tetsuko was doing.
Yet, the Shindou girl did not explain anything. The reason for that was something the swordswoman knew, deep within her heart... That 'reason' being that Tetsuko Shindou realized Elise... Would not accept that explanation. Elise was a foolish and selfish princess, after all, one who would surely only hurt herself more and continue to make efforts to keep Tetsuko by her side. That was why it had to be this way. Tetsuko Shindou couldn't utter too much in the way of explanation or justification, lest Elise do the foolish thing and follow her into the cold.
In other words, the swordswoman had convinced herself that the best thing to do was leave Elise in the dark while she pushed her away... In the sincerest hopes that Elise would push herself away as well. It was behavior that could only be described as self-destructive. Tetsuko sought to destroy herself, the pain and joy she held onto in the present, so she could become strong enough to protect her past. That was the damned fate and cruel irony of her actions. Deep down, such a thing... Terrified her, much like it did Elise. But the guilt and self-loathing she felt numbed that fear and terror, leaving only a cold and callous knight rejecting her own princess as she marched forth into hell...
When it came down to it, the act was not nearly as heartless as it seemed, though Tetsuko still abhorred herself for the pain she was putting Elise through... To an outsider, it seemed like Tetsuko was sacrificing part of her past, her connection to her dearest childhood friend, for the rest of it... That same outsider might inquire, why sacrifice this part? The answer... Was simple. It was merely because Elise von Eisenberg didn't deserve the same fate as so much of Tetsuko's past... Being in the incompetent care of an incompetent knight, fading through her fingers as she failed time and time and time again to protect it from the world's evils, from the world's unending change. Elise... Didn't deserve that. Even if it meant the pain she was feeling now...
After all, that frigid feeling, that feeling of isolation and damnation, it was something Tetsuko herself had already been through, leaving her the husk she was now... They were the very same things she'd felt during Elise's coma, the very same fears, and doubts. In Tetsuko's eyes, the reason she could walk into the snow so easily now... Was perhaps because she'd already seen her lover do it before her. She'd already seen her lover slip from her grasp, so now... It was easier to slip from Elise's. Cruelly so... The diference however, was in the burden. Watching Elise slip had intensified Tetsuko's burden, while she hoped to slip from Eli's hands... Would only relieve hers. How foolish and young they were...
How wise and observant he was. The flamboyant Master Gai, having made his appearance and demands, would soon be noticing the responses from the girls, with his own reactions showing he knew more than he'd let on about what had transpired here. Elise's reply in German prompted a raised brow from Tetsuko, who didn't catch it nearly wll enough to understand what had been said. Gai, on the other hand, would smile and nod, as though she'd just returned his greeting in a perfectly normal way. "Ah, Ich verstehe." Was his simple reply. It explained everything he needed to. He understood. He understood it perfectly well. They had, without Tetsuko's knowledge, now made plans to convene later, and it was certain they'd have much to talk about...
But firstly, and far more importantly, ice cream! Master Gai's demands had been met, and the pair was off following him... Though, as Tetsuko offered a few words to Elise, she soon found herself feeling like a complete fool... The tears on Elise's face as she walked past were enough to drown Tetsuko in the suffering and pain of her own guilt, the swordswoman casting her expression down, feeling like she was going to be sick. Gods, she was pathetic... Pushing Elise away, knowing it was the right thing to do... Yet, she still couldn't stomach it.
Pathetic. Useless. Weak.
While Tetsuko repeated those words in her head, Master Gai repeated a different set of phrases, humming along another old tune...
"Walk a mile in my shoes~ Walk a mile in my shoes~ Yeah, before you abuse, criticize, and accuse, Walk a mile in my shoes~"
Leading them further into the city, something did occur to Tetsuko as they walked, the swordswoman turning her head back up to the master with a confused look. "If you're just going to have us walk, why did my Grandfather need you to pick us up anyway?" The young swordswoman inquired, halting the man's gleeful humming.
"Ah, well, granpappy Shindou wanted someone with an eye on you before you headed into the city~ Could be dangerous with how things have been, but luckily, my peepers are top of the line!" The unusual master proclaimed excitedly. The trio was getting closer towards the city center, where the juxtaposition between old and new was everywhere around them. Old architecture, shrines and parks, were seen around them, wedged between modern residences and storefronts closer to the portside. There were some large, modern buildings about, but nothing that compared to the skyscarpers in Tokyo or Musutafu.
"C-C-Counter question!" Master Gai suddenly chimed in, putting on a faux announcer-like voice. "What's it like at U.A., hm? Bossman will get into all the boring training stuff, so tell me the juicy bits! I want the drama, the goss, the lives and times of y'all out there! Whatchu got for me?" They were closer to the city's center now, evident by a few signs around that indicated the famous Kashimajingu Shrine, at the heart of the town. So, ice cream was close, but Master Gai was still looking for something to chew on, it seemed!
"You've been watching too many dramas..." Tetsuko sighed, prompting a dramatic pout from the master in response. He was a bit of a clown, to say the least... But clowns were usually clever, after all, with their only goal being to make others smile. Perhaps he was much the same?

If only she could have turned back time, if only she had known where she had gone wrong.
Deep within her heart, Elise truly desired the chance to tell Tetsuko that she couldn't be replaced. Why the Shindou lass her existence as Elise's knight was so important to her existence. The very same knight who had always been an essential part of her life, the one who was able to make her wander into that snowy, hellish landscape, bearing whatever burdens and hardships the world might throw upon her. Why Elise... truly needed her, no matter how often she might have gotten injured. Maybe, if Elise could have told Tetsuko the things that lurked within her heart, then the iron-blooded knight might had been reassured, knowing that she was not a blunt blade, that she was not a failure of a knight. Maybe, she might had come to realize just how much pain she was inflicting by casting Elise aside.
Yet, in the turmoil of things the Eisenberg didn't speak, the reason for that being that Elise's resolve had been shattered by experiencing the one thing she had never imagined. Perhaps she had grown to take it for granted, that the two of them would always be at each other's side, a childish dream that had been torn assunder by Tetsuko's words. Perhaps it was for that reason that Elise was slowly and steadily reverting back to who she had once been. Her resolve had been broken, the catalyst of her strength, the one who had been the reason she could be strong having disappeared, and so instead of chasing Tetsuko deeper into the hellish landscape, the girl could only feebly curl up in the snow trying to cling to the past they once shared.
It was evident both physically and emotionally just how much it had damaged her. Meek and dejected, the girl who had once been a princess had now been reduced to a mere wallflower whose presence might wilter in a moment's notice. Light steps resounded on the pavement as she walked in Gai's footsteps, wishing she could escape from that landscape, return back to the warmth she adored so much. When only despair filled the future, it was only natural for the burgundy-haired lass to seek to escape into the sanctuary of the past, deluding herself with illusions of warmth and joy.
However, the foreigner soon decided to disrupt the gloomy thoughts by asking her a question, a question which stung deeply. He asked what it was like to be at U.A. The burgundy-haired lass found herself instinctively answering, although it seemed that rather than talking to him she was submerging herself into the past, as if she was steadily slipping away from the present. "It was... difficult." Elise began, thinking back about her first days at the school. "For a school meant to raise the next generation of 'heroes' a lot of their students are enigmatic in nature to say the least." Indeed, there were quite a few people who she thought didn't have the right mindset of being what she perceived as a hero. "Darkness constantly encroaches upon the school, trying to drown the light it represents. We had people trying to destroy us from within." She still remembered the events involving the Quirk Enhancement Drug quite vividly. "They were ill prepared to show us just how cruel and harsh the world outside can be, as became evident when we were forced to fight for our lives at Semper Fi." The place that villain escaped from, where she had nearly lost her... "It's like a harsh desert, you constantly trudge through the hardships send your way, not knowing if you'll ever reach your destination." Indeed, to her U.A felt like a desert, and yet...
"But it... teaches you things. Things books or lectures won't tell you. But above all, I was happy, because all that time, when I was on the verge of collapsing I had my sanctuary, like an oasis to come to, to rest and recover, to inspire to endure and brave onwards. I always looked forward to being there, to return and show just how much we were growing."
But in the end it seemed all futile. "But what does it matter? It's all gone now... perhaps it was all just a mirage." A wicked illusion, but for a moment she raised her head to look at Gai, the tears still in her eyes. "But even then, I'd rather have stayed there. It was warm, kind and comforting, something nobody else could fill. Whether it was real or not... it was irreplaceable... she was irreplaceable..."
The last words were whispered feebly as she lowered her head, indeed even despite all her perceived failures, Elise would have rather had Tetsuko as a failure of a knight, than to have her knight cast her aside. But perhaps it were things that simply needed answers, answers Gai might hopefully be able to answer. "What about you Gai-san... how does the world look like in the eyes of a wanderer like yourself?" It was a question she had wondered about for a while already, the way people might perceive the world. In her eyes the world once looked beautiful, harsh and cruel yet so beautiful at the same time. But now? Now it felt like the world had lost its entire meaning to her. She just wanted to return to the castle that were her memories and bask in feelings which seemed long gone.
It was clear that even despite everything, Elise's heart was still clearly thinking about Tetsuko, about the time they shared, about the things they did together. Elise von Eisenberg truly was a selfish little princess, but right now she was a princess who had been cast aside by the one she truly loved and cared for, perhaps the reason she was escaping into the memories of the past. But would there be any value in returning to the present?

It was far too late to turn back now…
They didn’t too, anyway. Tetsuko believed with all the certainty she had to in order to not lose her mind, that she’d made the right choice. Elise may have gotten hopelessly attached to a useless knight like hers, but the swordswoman had instilled in herself the belief that she was ultimately replaceable. Elise didn’t need her, and that was a simple fact. A fact that tore her soul apart, a fact that had no confirmation from the girl herself, but a fact that Tetsuko… Needed to believe. If she wanted to act as she was, pushing Elise away for her own good, removing the curse of Elise’s false knight. Elise did not need Tetsuko Shindou. That was all a lie, an illusion… It had to be. The idea that they could spend the rest of their lives together, the idea that doing such a thing was even in their best interests… Was false. They needed to take a different path…
Elise’s silence after the fact seemed to confirm the “truth” that Tetsuko had concocted. If Eli really needed her that much, surely she would have followed Tetsuko into the snow, regardless… Yet she did not. So it was abundantly clear to Tetsuko Shindou, that they did not need to carry on like this… That they needed to do what they must, in order to instead preserve what little of their past remained. Tetsuko could not allow herself to be a burden for Elise any longer, she could not allow the burden that was hers alone to carry way down Elise as well. Things were best this way, she told herself. Elise would come to realize how things were, she’d pick herself up from the snow as Tetsuko walked away, off to carry her burden alone… As it should be. As it needed to be.
It took effort to tell herself that, to push through all the pain and frustration that came with seeing Elise in the state that she was. Tetsuko followed along, her own steps heavier with the weight of what she’d done, what she needed to do. Tetsuko had to convince herself that the way Elise was right now… It was only temporary, it would fade, and Elise would see the bright future before her, the future paved out by her friends and family. Tetsuko was the one who could toil over the past, suffer as she tried to protect and held so tightly onto it… Not Elise.
The gloom and doom in the air was quickly disrupted by the foreigner’s intrusive thoughts. The man’s appearance seemed to paint him as being of Middle-Eastern origin, yet he seemed ever so interested in what the girls had gotten up to in their Japanese high school. Tetsuko had brushed him off without a second thought, while Elise, much to both their surprise… Began to answer him, slipping away into memories while she spoke. Gai remained silent, unreadable as Elise talked about their experiences. Tetsuko, on the other hand… Was much less hidden with her feelings.
It had, as Elise said, been difficult… Tetsuko couldn’t help but hang her head as Elise spoke about all the darkness they’d faced, even from within their own school during the QED crisis… The same point where Tetsuko, in her foolish and drugged up state, had so ineptly confused her feelings… If only she had known then, if only she had answered definitively… If only she’d had the courage to tell Elise that she might not even love her. Then, so much would have been prevented. Tetsuko found validation in what Elise spoke of at first, validation of her own weakness and failures. That included the myriad of mistakes at Semper Fi, and everything they’d suffered there… Yet… It was what Elise said next that started to put Tetsuko off. She spoke off all the things they learned, which was true enough, then came her talk of… Sanctuary… It was easy enough to tell, with how Elise spoke, exactly what this place was, and it was confirmed when Elise outright referred to it as ‘her’… Tetsuko felt like she was going to be sick. Her blood was boiling with self-directed frustration, and this deep, unsettling feeling that came with being described as all those things. It was… Too much to hold in.
Elise asked something to Gai himself, and the foreigner opened his mouth to answer for a moment, before Tetsuko interjected. ”Don’t… Don’t say that bullshit about a ‘sanctuary’…” Tetsuko uttered lowly, her voice a mixture of rage and sorrow. Yet, Tetsuko was not looking toward Elise… All her rage was directed inwards. Toward herself, for making Elise think this way… ” Sanctuary? Warm? Kind? Comforting? Do you know what you’re saying? Who you’re saying this about? Do you still think it was ever any of those things!? I… Do you still think… I… Was ever any of those things? Irreplaceable… Are you really so foolish to think-“
A flash of steel suddenly appeared a few feet before Tetsuko’s eyes, instinct halting her tongue. The girl looked to Gai, still a few meters away from her, his sword looking like it was still in his sheathe! The power of that Nagai-Te… Wouldn’t have even been witnessed. The serious expression he wore, however, was plain to see. ”A moment, Tetsuko-sama. Eli-tan asked myself a question.” His tone was grim for a moment, the man having realized how close things were to boiling over. He returned to his usual smile only a few moments later, however.
”Anyway~ You’re a bit high-strung, Tetsu-tan, you might wanna save it for the other masters. Eli-tan, to answer your question… I’d say the world only really looks one way.” He grinned slightly, his eyes vacant for a moment. ”I’d say, above all else, the world is… ‘unreasonable’. Unreasonable in every aspect. I think that might just be why I love it so much~” Master Gai offered a small smile upon his lips, yet also a decidedly cryptic one… It seemed his way of viewing things wasn’t so simple it could be explained with words.
”Well, geeze, all this super serious talk has ruined my appetite~ You girls alright with skipping ice cream? Not really the weather for it anyway~” Master Gai had certainly realized that things between the girls weren’t going to be any better if they kept on as they were… Time would be needed before they could address things properly. ”So, let’s just get going then… You’ve got a meeting to attend, Tetsu-tan… You’re welcome to come as well, Eli-tan, as a guest.” The Shindou girl tensed up right away… She already knew what was coming. It was hardly going to be a meeting…
Perhaps more like a trial.

Sometimes it was indeed too late to turn back, but perhaps there was still time to make things right.
And yet right now neither of the girls seemed to consider the need to make things right, perhaps because in their minds the definition of what was right was so fundamentally different from one another. The iron-blooded knight continued to blame herself for the events that had unfolded, believing with all the cetainty of her being that she had to do this in order to not lose her ming. In Tetsuko's mind this was the right choice, that the burgundy-haired lass had gotten hopelessly attached to a knight Tetsuko deemed useless. However, it was there, at that point the fundamental difference already started to show itself: Tetsuko thought she was ultimately replaceable, that Elise didn't need her, and that was a cold fact, a fact that tore her soul apart. Even if it was a fact that had no confirmation from Elise herself, it was a fact that Tetsuko needed to believe to carry on, even if that fact was so horribly wrong from the truth.
Of course, being pushed away so coldly was not helping Elise either, even if Tetsuko did it with the best intentions in mind, that by doing so she would remove the girl's curse of her false knight, Elise felt so lonely as Tetsuko seemed to had come of the opinion that Tetsuko Shindou was not needed in the Eisenberg's life. Still, to think that Tetsuko believed that this was in their best interests: That they needed to take a different path... Perhaps they were well and truly both fools.
Fear was a dangerous something, a chill which embodied Elise's silence after the events so far. To Tetsuko it was an affirmation of the truth the iron-blooded lass had concocted, believing that Elise ws not following Tetsuko into the snow. And yet at the outskirts of that snowy landscape the lass her feet shuffled lightly, unsurely as she pleadingly called for Tetsuko to return, yet the knight had wandered too far into the cold white landscape! And yet how could she possibly brave such a harsh environment by herself? She had grown so used to the warmth and comfort of Tetsuko's presence at her side, to the point that now it was gone, the coldness of the reality felt debilitating.
Would it be temporarily? Nobody could say for sure, the burgundy-haired lass was an emotional person, and as such it was hard to say if Tetsuko's hope would be answered. Perhaps it was because she was so emotional, that Elise von Eisenberg was also so fascinatingly unpredictable. Few could predict what the girl might do next when faced in a situation like this, for as the little princess was shuffling along the snowy landscape, there were so many possible things that could happen: Would she collapse into the snow and continue crying for a knight who wouldn't come? Would she run away, or perhaps brave into the snow?
The gloom and doom in the air was quickly disrupted by the foreigner's thoughts, the man's appearance clearly suggesting he was of Middle-Eastern origin, yet he seemed ever so interested in what the girls had gotten involved with in their time at a Japanese high school. Although Tetsuko had brushed him off without a second thought, it seemed the burgundy-haired lass would, to both their surprise answer his inquiry, slipping away into memories as she spoke, thinking about the times that were so long gun.
Like she had mentioned, it had been a difficult time of their school. Even as Tetsuko hang her shoulder as Elise spoke about the darkness they had encountered, the events of the QED drug, Elise's tone clearly carried a sense of warmth and longing, clearly holding feelings of fondness which no doubt were associated with the fact that event had also been the first step toward her relationship with Tetsuko.
However, it was when she started speaking of a 'sanctuary', that the turmoil within Tetsuko would become at its worst. She had been facing Tetsuko with her back, so she had not expected to hear the girl speak. "..." The words spoken by Tetsuko made her lower her head. the description of Tetsuko's presence being warm, kind and comforting... It was something she believed with her entire being, and yet it seemed Tetsuko was denying the very concept of it, the very existence of the knight who had once stood by her side. She was on the verge of turning around, so much she wanted to say, to shout even as her body trembled lightly from all the feelings bottled up within her.
Tetsuko was interrupted, the foreigner seemingly having done something to silence the girl in a way unknown to her, yet he soon turned focus onto the subject of her question, one he answered in quite an enigmatic manner: He considered the world to be unreasonable. It was an interesting statement, yet the cryptic nature of it made her quietly wonder the nature of those words, the meaning they contained... anything that could help her distract from those painful feelings raging within her heart...
However, it seemed that the time for conversation was over, as the situation had led to Master Gai to reveal he had lost his apetite for ice-cream and thought it might had been better for them to head straight toward the meeting with the other 'masters'. Of course, the revelation of her being allowed to attend such an elusive meeting, especially as a foreigner to the school came as a surprise. In hindsight she should have expected it to have had some meaning, but right now all she could think about was that Tetsuko's parents had permitted it. After all, the Eisenberg had been close friends of the Shindou family for so many years. It was reasonable to assume that she had been allowed entrance because of that connection.
Yet little did Elise know, or expect to face the trials that awaited within...
