Post by Tetsuko Shindou on Dec 19, 2018 23:28:05 GMT -4
It may seem difficult at first, but everything is difficulty at first - Miyamoto Musashi There were few things more important than one’s ‘origin’. The defining focal point from which they, and everything that made them who they were, burst forth and flowed down this rapid and treacherous river called life. The ocean from which the waters flowed, the realm of spirits that they had all walked into this physical world from. That was what an ‘origin’ was, that was what defined so many people. Tetsuko Shindou was hardly any exception. Her own origin was tied deeply to many things. Swordsmanship, the tragedies her cursed family suffered, her own mother and the rest of the Shindou swordsmen… Perhaps most importantly, however, was the ‘place’ Tetsuko’s origin was tied to. Tucked away in the East of Japan’s Ibaraki prefecture was a small city with little that was too remarkable about it. The area was mostly flat, the few large hills that accentuated it populated with some of Japan’s most prominent shrines. It was a port city above all else, with thriving shipping and industrial facilities that lay on the borders of the town, the powerful modern pillars that upheld an old-fashioned and casual community. One that was not too different from the traveller’s town that Kashima had once been, creating an air of closeness among this worker’s community as they all upheld the city’s core values. Values that were protected, above all else… By one man. The Iron Will of Kashima. Ryouichi Shindou. Current Grandmaster of Jikishinkage-ryu. Grandfather to Tetsuko Shindou. Through his efforts as perhaps the greatest warrior in Ibaraki, he had carved out a place for their family within Kashima. By now, Shindou family themselves were revered within the small city, to the point where they were perhaps seen more as the city's leaders than the mayor himself, not at all an unfair assessment. The Shindou family was more like a clan of old, and Kashima was their dominion, Tetsuko had been born into the heart and soul of Kashima, the granddaughter of its protector and one of its most influential figures… The keys to his initial influence over the city were complex, hidden within stories that she could regale with vigor and intrigue, yet none of them were yet relevant. All that needed to be known was that particular structure of Kashima. Its workers carried the city’s weight, and the blades of their sword school ensured they would not fall to any harm. A modern industrial city, yet one that still held onto old-fashioned ideals and structures. A strange place where defined by steel, swordsmanship, shrines and soccer… With the last being but a unifying hobby of the whole city. Kashima had always been a strange place, and now nearing three quarters through the 21st century, it had only gotten stranger. Indeed, Kashima might not be the most prominent locale in Japan, but it had heart, and a fragment of that heart was in Tetsuko’s core. Her bloodline defined her, her city defined her, her origin defined her. So there she was, dragging a small suitcase along the path to the train station, on her way to revisit that origin of hers. The morning air was cool and uncaring, chilling the swordswoman even through her light jacket. Nonetheless, she carried on towards the station, a train to catch that would bring her home in under an hour, given that Kashima wasn't too far North East of Tokyo. Her intention was to spend the weekend at her hometown, where she'd be reporting back on her progress and training at the behest of her grandfather, and trying to use her time to pick up whatever she could for her future struggles. The girl had a long way to go if she wanted to claim the strength of a true Hero, and she couldn't claim that strength without the power of her origin. In her small backpack, very little was taken, naught but some spare clothes and other essentials for the trip. Anything else she needed would already be back home, within their residence in Kashima. Tetsuko's father was already over there, aiding with some apparent troubles the family he'd married into was having. It seemed Kashima had something bothering it at present, at Tetsuko hoped to learn more once she arrived. She was travelling alone, of course, having told Elise that this was nothing more than a mere training trip. Elise von Eisenberg, the girl Tetsuko hesitated to even call her something like a lover, something she didn't even deserve, did not have to attend this trip... Yet, even as Tetsuko pushed Elise away, elsewhere, wiser persons acted with the knowledge of years. ~~~~~~~~~~ "She's heading over to Kashima for her family, y'know?" Tamiko Nakamura, the Grandmother to Tetsuko Shindou on her father's side, would say to a certain burgundy haired girl over the phone. There was a pause while Tetsuko's Grandmother took a drag on a cigarette, before continuing. "She probably told you some crap about it just being a training trip. Girl has her father's wits... But you know well as I do that you should be going, right?" Tamiko's voice was stern yet paradoxically kind, the tone of a woman who'd little patience for the kind of nonsense that could hurt those she cared about. "So this is me, as her Grandmother, telling you to go with her. She needs you now, I believe that... It's just that she's got a Nakamura's stubbornness and a Shindou's pride. A nasty combination..." Tamiko huffed in amusement, turning away and coughing lightly before saying the last of her piece. "Tetsuko doesn't know what her damn heart wants. Help her figure it out, would ya? Her train's at 10. Don't be late." ~~~~~~~~~~ Soon enough, the swordswoman found herself waiting at the train station, luggage beside her while she awaited the train on her line. She figured she’d be going alone, and part of that fact made her a bit unsteady… Even as she knew she couldn’t keep staying by Elise’s side, even as she tried to push Elise away… Tetsuko still knew, deep down, that she wanted to stand by Elise. Even if she didn’t know her own feelings, even if she couldn’t call herself a proper lover… To even do it simply as allies… For some reason, that felt like enough, to Tetsuko…

There she was, standing in their dorm room by herself. It was an eerie feeling, but ever since the day she woke up there had always been something of an eerie feeling haunting her. It felt as if an invisible wall had separated her from the one she cared about the most. A coldness in a way that made her shiver, as if she felt like she had done something wrong. Silently she looked ahead, recalling the words her lover had spoken. She was simply returning to Kashima to train, something that didn't need her presence. In the end, surely she would only be a distracting for the iron-blooded lass, a burden. What could she possibly do or say? What was the nature of this unpleasant coldness which had spread between the two of them? A soft ringtone pulled her thoughts back to reality, a hand reaching for her phone as she picked it up, it was a voice she was quite familiar with: Tamiko Nakamura, Tetsuko's grandmother and a close friend of the Eisenberg household.
"I know... she... she told me that it was a training trip." the burgundy-haired lass muttered softly, feeling that familiar feeling of sorrow rising within her chest. Tetsuko didn't need her help, did she even want it? It was something Elise feared finding the answer to, but it was at that time Tamiko stated something which made Elise pause for a moment. "What I should do..." What was it that she should do? Every time she tried to fight for something she cared for, she ended up losing it because she was a coward who didn't follow through. Back when she walked away from Rin, back when she wasn't able to kill Thunder Shock and now... Now Tetsuko was about to walk away. "I don't want her to leave... Not by herself, not without me by her side." She whispered those words feebly as she heard Tetsuko's grandmother state something which made Elise turn silent: Tetsuko needed her, now more than ever. "I understand, I'll catch up to her Tamiko-san!" Elise exclaimed as she closed the phone and started to quickly gather her bag, although curiously enough it seemed much lighter than normal, its contents yet to be revealed.
As fast as she could she ran toward the train station, confusion and sorrow plaguing her mind as she tried to dash toward her destination. Why had Tetsuko decided to go by herself? What was this unpleasant coldness she subtly felt? Hurried footsteps led her down the streets of Musutafu as she tried to think. She had made an oath: to never let go. No matter what would happen, she didn't want to let go of Tetsuko. And yet, the doubts of the girl's feelings plagued her. Tetsuko had been the one to offer them to start dating, and yet after all those months Elise felt they advanced so little. It was almost as if guilt and insecurities made Tetsuko incapable of reaching the answer she sought, the thing she truly wanted. But what was it that Tetsuko Shindou wanted, and was it something Elise could provide? Could Elise muster the determination to continue chasing someone who seemingly didn't know if she 'loved' her? Certainly, Tetsuko cared about her, cared immensely but was that affection she didn't understand, the answer Elise sought to have Tetsuko acknowledge? Did Tetsuko Shindou love her, and if not how would she ever become capable of enduring that fact? It made her body shiver as she finally reached the train station, and after inhaling deeply she took a few steps forwards, getting in line for a ticket at the counter.
It was rather fortunate there weren't that many people around currently, and as a result Elise was able to make her way toward the boarding platforms on time, panting as she arrived at the right platform and stepped toward the familiar figure who was standing nearby. "G-Got a train to catch?" Elise asked with soft pants, the sweat that dripped down from her making it clear she had literally ran all the way up to the train station. She wasn't sure what Tetsuko was thinking, what Tetsuko wanted so for the time being she simply stated. "Guess we both got one to catch, I'm can't let you go by yourself... so would you please allow me to accompany you on this training trip?"
She raised a ticket lightly in her hand, as if to wordlessly tell Tetsuko that even if she rejected the idea, she still would be going to Kashima. Hoisting her backpack over her shoulder Elise sighed gently as she continued. "Umm..." She paused, suddenly finding the words she sough to be quite difficult to gather, and so instead muttered weakly. "W-Want to talk?" She asked, an awkward question as she lightly scratched her cheek. "I... I promise I won't distract you from your training, or become a burden. I'll... I'll be training really hard also!" Elise exclaimed, her statement made clear and earning some bewildered looks from nearby passengers.
Hopefully they wouldn't need to wait too long for the train, if she was being honest this atmosphere felt so different, almost unpleasant even. It almost felt as if she couldn't even reach Tetsuko if she tried. It reminded her of that time at the military demonstration camp, that coldness Rin expressed back then. However, this time she couldn't turn back, she couldn't run away. She would continue to reach out to Tetsuko all the way till she found that warmth again and the two of them could resume their search for the answer Tetsuko's heart wanted to discover. "Did you hear anything about how things been going in Kashima?" the burgundy-haired lass inquired, clearly a bit curious to find out if Tetsuko had been in contact with anyone from there. Most likely her grandfather, the thoughts about the things she heard about the man being more than enough to send a little shiver across her spine. This was truly going to become one hell of a trip, wouldn't it?

Post by Tetsuko Shindou on Dec 19, 2018 23:59:51 GMT -4
Tetsuko stood still and cold in the morning air, her light hair blown softly by the gentle breeze that was coming in. The platform was sparsely populated, with it being an unusual time for most people to take a train on the Kashima Line. That cool air and minimal other persons around her only intensified the strange isolation Tetsuko was starting to feel, something she'd started to develop ever since Elise had fallen into that coma... It was oddly, and darkly, comfortable. It hurt, to be sure, knowing that deep down she'd never be worthy of standing by Elise's side, knowing that she was a hopelessly cruel person for staying by it in spite of their differing understanding of their own feelings. Tetsuko Shindou knew it was cruel to pretend like she could ever come to understand that heart of hers; like she could really promise she might say those words to Elise...
That was but one of the many failures Tetsuko Shindou had wrought in the past few months, one of the many reasons she felt some kind of resolve in her cold acts... Pushing Elise way was for her own sake, allowing her childhood friend to carry on without having to rely on an unwieldy and weak warrior like Tetsuko. It was only the honorable thing to do. That was what the swordswoman continued to tell herself while she waited for her train to arrive, trying and failing to instill in herself the certainty that she was making the right choice. That after she returned to Kashima, after she got stronger, everything would be clear... Even if it meant moving away from Elise's side now, she could still have those memories of theirs from their childhood. Even if Tetsuko had to carve away her present, the present she had so poorly acted in, she could at least still preserve her past...
n the end, it was a rather defeatist way of looking at things. Tetsuko Shindou knew not that victory was possible, and sought only to compromise. So how fortunate it was that some out there were not so willing to throw in the towel just yet...
The sound of panting and hurried steps drew Tetsuko's attention, causing her to glance briefly aside and spot a familiar face she had not expected to see here. One she'd actively avoided seeing here, no less. "E-Elise!?" She blurted out in surprise, her brows raising in confusion and shock. How did she even know Tetsuko's train was soon? From the sweat dripping down, she must have run all the way here, another impulsive move from this hopelessly hopeful girl. "Why are you here, Eli..." Tetsuko pouted in a conflicted tone. In spite of her apparent disappointment, some part of her couldn't help but feel... Relieved? Truth be told, she wasn't entirely sure what she was feeling at this sudden news. Unfortunately, it seemed as though Elise had even gone as far as already buying herself a ticket, Tetsuko sighing at the sight of it while Elise asked if she could accompany.
"Elise, this isn't a vacation, this isn't some fun trip you can just tag along on... I'll be fine on my own..." Tetsuko scolded, glancing away and finding herself unable to look Elise in the eyes as she spoke. The ticket in her hand made it clear, however, that the swordswoman's protests wouldn't mean much in the end. "...I guess I won't make you refund your ticket, though..." The Shindou girl compromised, turning her gaze downward and looking away as she conceded on this point. It seemed like Elise would be tagging along, after all, and just her company alone... Started to take away the cold atmosphere. It wasn't right... Tetsuko deserved and needed that solitude from her, she couldn't keep letting her stand by her side like this.
What came next from Elise surprised Tetsuko even more, the girl suddenly making promises and proclamations about doing her best and not distracting Tetsuko... The swordswoman supposed it was OK then... She knew Elise could be a hard worker herself, so it was... Not entirely unfounded if she wanted to train in Kashima as well. "Fine, you can train too. I'm not sure if any of the masters can help you much, but..." Well, one did actually come to mind, the more she thought about it. The Shindou girl continued to stand there, still and wearing a downcast look as she awaited the train to arrive. It was warmer with the company, but the prideful samurai seemed to only trudge further into the coldness... Out of pride, out of duty, out of honor? Who knew...?
Not a few moments after Elise asked about how things were in Kashima, the train arrived on the platform. It was an older model, not particularly fast given that the railway to Kashima was only relatively short, and mostly used for freight. "C'mon, I'll tell you on the train." Tetsuko said, quickly lifting up her suitcase and boarding the closest carriage. After stowing her luggage in the back of the carriage, Tetsuko would take a window suit on one side of the train, looking listlessly out the window as she waited for Elise to sit beside her. Even if she wasn't entirely down with Elise coming along, it was only fair she brings her up to speed.
"I'm... Not that sure how things are over there. The school seems to be going fine, my Grandfather has told me that much. He does want to here about my progress, though, and I suspect there might be other troubles there, but it's nothing new..." Tetsuko explained nonchalantly, glancing back to Elise and elaborating. "The port and steel mills in Kashima make it a bit of a target for certain groups who want to strongarm their way into controlling them. Sometimes, they go harder at it than usual, but it's nothing my Grandfather can't handle, or hasn’t already handled before He and our school protect Kashima with their skills, like the Shinsengumi of the Bakumatsu period." Tetsuko actually smiled a bit as she spoke of her school and its prowess, finding pride in what they did to protect Kashima.
"Other than that... I don't know what's new there, but hopefully I'll be filled in. I just hope everything's alright..."

To be honest, even now Elise felt hopelessly lost, unsure of what to do for her sworn knight. There was none of the usual cheery teasing or pleasantly smooth comments made by the burgundy-haired lass who struggled to deal with the awkwardness. However, there was one thing Elise von Eisenberg was confident in, an answer she knew quite well: Her place was at Tetsuko's side. It was true, they sometimes could have moments of strife of differences but Elise felt that those paled in comparison to the affection they felt to each other. Then why, why was Tetsuko so ready to move away from her? It was a question which plagued her, as she reached Tetsuko's side and the girl asked in a surprised inquiry about why she was there, the burgundy-haired lass shook her head lightly. "You should know the answer to that question already Tetsu, why am I here?" Of course it was cause she cared so much about that stubborn knight of hers! In the end, what knight would stray from her princess' side? They were so deeply interwoven together in a way that made it quite difficult to grasp just how strong their relationship was, not just because of how complex it was but also how intense.
"I know it's not a vacation! Besides, we made a promise didn't we?" the girl inquired, yet the pout and conflicted tone of her lover stung lightly, an unpleasant sensation she tried to brush off as she just felt glad that she was able to catch up with Tetsuko in time.
"Then I'll train by myself if none of the masters want to teach me." Elise answered resolute, the two of them standing side by side as they continued to wait for the train to arrive. Why was it feeling so familiar? That coldness, each time she tried to reach the coldness made her back away, the feeling a pressure that terrified her. What did Tetsuko Shindou fight for? Why was she suffering like this? Elise knew what she was fighting for, she was fighting for the sake of her loved one, And yet, she felt powerless at her lover's suffering. Did she even have the right to call Tetsuko that? Did Tetsuko even consider her that? Fear and doubt lingered deep within despite the gentle yet exhausted expression on the girl's face.
Nodding her head gently as Tetsuko told her she would tell her more on the train Elise followed in her footsteps, taking a seat beside her childhood friend. Like usually she found her hand instinctively raised, a habit as she attempted to gently place her hand upon Tetsuko's own, but the same coldness from before made her shrink back in defeat, gently placing her hand on her lap as she looked briefly at the iron-blooded knight before turning her gaze away from her, the light backpack resting in front of her on the opposite side's seat.
"Of course... With your grandfather there I doubt anyone would be stupid enough to do anything toward the school, although what do you think Tetsu... how is your progress going?" She paused for a bit, nodding her head in affirmation that there might had been another reason her lover's hometown was troubled by something. "I know~ People often say that the Shindou and the students of the school are like Kashima's Shinsengumi, it's like a famous part of the town to the point even I heard about it~" Elise exclaimed with a brief smile, feeling slightly relieved Tetsuko could at least still muster a glimpse of that smile she adored so much.
Of course, hearing Tetsuko's troubled feelings on the matter Elise couldn't help but feel a bit worried, leaning back in her seat as she looked across to the seat holding her bag. Would she be a burden on this trip? Was that why Tetsuko pushed her away? The soft pants had fortunately ceased, but her exhaustion from running all the way to the train station did takes it toll upon her, finding her head starting to gently bob. She was trying her utmost to listen, to show she was paying attention to Tetsuko, but she was so tired, both emotionally and physically and considering she had only recently made her recovery to the point she was discharged from the hospital, the burgundy-haired lass found herself dozing off slowly but surely till her soft breathing and closed eyes were a telltale of the fact she had fallen asleep.
Some said that dreams were a way to escape the hardships of reality, but sometimes they served as a cruel reminder of the past, of mistakes that were made. How many mistakes had she made? It was a question that followed her into her dreams, replaying her memories like some sort of movie, yet there was one thing she would never consider a mistake, something she would protest and deny no matter what people would tell her: Her love for Tetsuko was not a mistake, it was not a lie nor was it an impulsive thing. Perhaps it was for that reason the burgundy-haired lass couldn't let go: Because despite all their differences, despite the fact Tetsuko Shindou couldn't find the answer of what her heart truly needed, Elise von Eisenberg loved her immensely, far more than anyone else in this world.
Then why... why did that coldness scare her so much? Even if it felt less strong than before, it reminded her of something unpleasant, to the point that when they nearly arrived at their destination Elise's body would jolt awake, a hand shakily reaching for her chest, in particular the area her damaged core was at. It burned lightly, similar to a second heart beating erratically in response to her feelings. To Tetsuko it might had looked like she woke up from a nightmare, but rather than seeking comfort or telling her Elise's expression just turned into a brief glimpse of sorrow as she lowered her hand to her side, resting it beside Tetsuko's on the railing of their chairs.
What could she do to banish this coldness?

Of course, Tetsuko already knew the reason why Elise had come, and that knowledge was what troubled her the most. The knowledge that, no matter how many times she failed Elise, no matter how hurt the Germanic girl would be by her foolish endurance at Tetsuko's side, she would still never leave it. It was the painful knowledge that Elise von Eisenberg loved her, deeply and truly. A knowledge that was only so painful because Tetsuko couldn't say the reverse was true. She could not say that she loved Elise, she did not know if she loved Elise. It didn't seem at all unreasonable then, to think that Elise herself was unreasonable for continuing to persist by Tetsuko's side. Yet, with all that said, Tetsuko had no response to Elise's retort, merely looking away and gulping down her guilt as she tried to dissuade Elise a bit more from this venture. As she tried to trudge further into the cold, hoping idiotically that doing so would keep Elise in the light.
Their knight and princess dynamic had reached a strange turn, where the Shindou girl was indeed more like a samurai serving her lord... Seeking now to perhaps become a ronin out of her failures to protect them, abandoning a place she called home to preserve her pride, and out of her own certain affection for her lord. She was willing to go so far as breaking promises they'd made, promises Tetsuko now looked back on and felt only self-directed disgust for the things she'd said and done. Ultimately, it had been her who was had chosen to pursue this relationship with Elise, out of some twisted desire just to know her own heart, to hold onto the past and stand by Elise's side no matter what may come... It was that selfish desire of hers that had brought about such shallow promises, that had then brought them to where they were now, cold and broken...
It was as admirable as it was foolish, in Tetsuko's eyes, for Elise to continue struggling on, determined as ever. She was more a warrior than the swordswoman, that was clear. Where Elise sought to push through and improve, Tetsuko sought only to sharpen and hone. She was no warrior, she was just a blade. Hardly even human. It was this difference that only seemed to confirm what Tetsuko felt. Elise von Eisenberg was surely better off by the side of someone who wouldn't hold her back. In response to Elise's declarations about training alone, however, Tetsuko lightly shook her head. "No... I don't thank that will be necessary. There is one master who might be able to help you, I just don't know if he's in town right now..." That man... That strange and unreasonable man, one could never know where he was at any given time, his very nature dictating that he was so... Unpredictable. Perhaps the perfect person to help train Elise von Eisenberg.
They were right beside each other as they boarded the train, yet the distance between them had never been greater. Neither was sure of their relationship at present, with all they had to go on being their past connections, leading to an awkward and somewhat cold mood, like they were talking to each other more as acquaintances than lovers. Yet... Just being beside Elise... It was warmer. It was definitely... Warmer. As Elise so casually stated that no one would be stupid enough to attack the school, Tetsuko immediately became uneasy, her body jolting slightly as a hand was instinctively brought to her neck, scratching idly. The question about progress did nothing to stop this unearthing of burdens and memories. "My progress...? I... I think..." Tetsuko breathed a low sigh into the air, glancing away from Elise yet again. "I think I've got a long way to go. I don't think I've... Made as much progress as I needed too... Hopefully, this can fix that." She admitted with unusual honesty, looking quite resolved and certain when the topic was her own weakness.
Hearing even Elise knew of the school's prowess brought Tetsuko her first bit of levity for the day, feeling a sense of pride that gave her a bit more faith for the times ahead. For even if she was weak, others around her were strong, her school included. Looking out the window, Tetsuko wouldn't say much else for the remainder of their trip, partially because Elise was asleep soon enough... Foolish girl, she was likely still recovering from her injuries at the hospital, to now be coming on this trainign trip... Tetsuko really had sinned horribly to let this happen. The Shindou girl, however, did not rest along their journey... The weight of her burdens was far too distracting for that. After around an hour and a half, Elise would suddenly jolt from her sleep, just as they were pulling into their transfer.
"Are you alright?" Tetsuko asked with a subdued concern, but moments before the train doors began to open. "C'mon, we're at Sawara Station, we gotta transfer here for the Kashima Line." The Shindou girl would usher, having taken this route in the past. After their transfer, it would be another equally awkward but much shorter train trip before they were finally arriving at Kashimajingū Station. Even coming in, the scent of the sea was in the air...
Retrieving her luggage and disembarking with Elise, the pair would soon find themselves leaving the station, where Tetsuko breathed in the local air as the doors closed behind her. It was good to be home.
The area around them was all relatively flat, letting one see on for quite a wats to witness Kashima's more grandiose structures. Most notably was the stadium, which towered over many of the lower buildings around it. In the distance, the industrial zone could be seen, and closer was the port. Even Kashima's own little stretch of beach was visible, but other than that, everything else about the town was decidedly humble. Smaller buildings littered the area, residential areas suited to their primarily working class. Many were more traditional in design, though hardly palaces. The air of a simple Japanese town was about them, and it was an air that Tetsuko thoroughly enjoyed.
"Welcome to Kashima proper." Tetsuko couldn't help but utter aloud, before breaking out of her daze to realize something... Whoever her Grandfather had sent to pick them up, evidently wasn't here yet! "Hah... I guess we're stuck waiting then..." The Shindou girl sighed, though kept an eye on Elise... Curious if the Germanic girl wanted to do anything instead. As burdened as Tetsuko was, it seemed just being in her home city was enough to already lift her spirits a bit.

A promise was sacred, especially toward Tetsuko, Elise was someone who nearly always tried to keep her promises, even if she was clumsy or foolish at times, she genuinely meant well for others, and no promise was as precious as the ones she made with Tetsuko. Amidst the coldness Elise felt, unpleasant but tried her best to surpress it. It was infuriating, to feel this coldness yet being unable to banish it, incapable of figuring out what it was that she needed to do. Tetsuko's grandmother told her that Tetsuko needed Elise by her side, that she was unsure of what it was what it was that Tetsuko's heart desired. Even now after all those months of searching together, it started to take its toll. The wait for those words, that affirmation that Tetsuko also loved her. Perhaps both were unreasonable in their actions, and yet Elise would rather be unreasonable than to have Tetsuko leave her side. And yet, she couldn't help but shake off this unpleasantness. This feeling something was wrong, that something was missing: something the two of them truly needed if they wanted to advance onwards.
Even then Tetsuko's princess found herself trapped, trapped within an imaginary castle of sorts, the castle being the immense feelings she held for the iron-blooded girl at her side. Just as much as her feelings for Tetsuko were a driving force, they also were shackles, shackles which bound her to the girl, shackles simply because Tetsuko didn't know for sure what she felt. Elise was selfish, selfish for burdening her lover with such a difficult quest like discovering the nature of her feelings. But perhaps it was because of the time it took to find them that Elise started to become unsure, like a princess locked in her tower, looking outside the window into the distance waiting for her knight to return, a knight who might never return from that quest.
And despite that pain, she foolishly struggled onwards, determined to help Tetsuko find the answer. If she was entirely honest, it might had been better if Tetsuko found her answer, even if it was one she didn't want to hear, if anything it would hopefully free Tetsuko from this burden, this burden her princess inflicted upon her. Despite the fact she had only just woken up the thoughts returned to plague her: How in the world would she survive without Tetsuko's love? Could she even... had she ever even held it? Now more than ever she longed for some affirmation, some sign that told her that Tetsuko did love her, and yet she knew it would be beyond foolish to hope for that, it would be cruel to ask such a thing of Tetsuko.
Now she thought back about the hospital visit, she recalled the words that were spoken and felt a heavier weight crush her emotionally: Tetsuko wanted her to stop relying on her. It were words Elise had interpreted as a sign that she was a burden, even if she didn't voice it: the awareness her actions were troubling her knight was enouh to fill Elise with a familiar guilt. Tetsuko had commented earlier that she wanted to fix the lack of progress in her training, yet Elise found herself more hesitant: Could she really stop relying on Tetsuko? Closing her eyes for a moment Elise tried her utmost to surpress the moistness in her eyes, to ignore the light throbbing in her chest as her core beat unpleasantly next to her heart. "I'm fine..." Elise muttered weakly, not wanting to worry the girl, not wanting to rely on her... not wanting to be the burden she had perceived herself to be.
As they took their transfer onto the Kashima line the burgundy-haired lass remained silent on the rest of their trip, her eyes closed as she tried to clear her mind. It didn't work, not in the slightest. The trip was fortunately much shorter, allowing the two of them to finally reach their destination, the fresh scent of the sea drifting through the air.
Elise paused for a moment as she gazed around the area they had arrived at. Kashima was always a place she enjoyed visiting as a child, the place was so different from Tokyo and Musutafu, reminding her more of the rural side of Germany where she spend the first few years of her life at. Back when everything seemed so much simpler, so easier to be honest with each other. The burgundy-haired lass her attention was quickly drawn by Tetsuko's voice, a gentle nod being given in affirmation. It had been since the memorial service of her father since she been to Kashima, and back then it was only on the outskirts. However, seeing the Shindou girl look around and realize thaf nobody was around to pick them up the Eisenberg inquired softly.
"Did your grandfather tell you when they would send someone over?" Elise's tone was soft but lacked its usual cheer, and soon approached the direction of the town, gesturing with a hand toward the nearby entrance into the town. "Maybe we can look around a bit? Surely getting to walk around town might give us a better impression of what might be troubling the people, and we might stumble onto that person your grandfather send for us."
It was an idea, perhaps better than waiting here in the unpleasant silence, but a part of her just wanted to stay at Tetsuko's side, to return to that warmth she had once taken for granted, which seemed almost lost entirely... because the princess had burdened her knight too much... "Of course, if you prefer to wait for them to arrive, we can do that also." The burgundy-haired lass added quickly, as if to explain she was fine with whatever choice Tetsuko might make. In the end she was just a tagalong on this journey, and did promise that she wouldn't get in Tetsuko's way, that she wouldn't distract her from the true purpose of this trip...

"I see..." Tetsuko uttered quietly as Elise assured she was fine, even though the swordswoman figured it to be a complete and utter lie. Elise... Of course she was suffering, of course she was in pain, who wouldn't be if they had the burden of relying on such a hopeless knight as Tetsuko Shindou? Yet... The swordswoman couldn't bring herself to object to what Elise said, to raise the issue any further. Instead, Tetsuko remained cold and quiet as ever, head hung low as she continued to lament her own failings in keeping Elise safe from the darkness and despair that haunted her. The burden Tetsuko carried could do nothing but harm Elise, that was something she'd come to believe truly and deeply, so what option did she have but to bear it alone, rather than hurt those she loved... An image arose in Tetsuko's mind, a peculiar one. The Shindou family's Kashima residence had quite the collection of woodblock paintings, and one had always stood out to Tetsuko. It depicted a woman amidst falling snow, a basket on her back. She was alone, isolated, walking away from frosted trees with an umbrella over her head. The painting had always struck Tetsuko as bittersweet. A lone woman, in a cold and desolate place, winter's fury all around her... Glancing back at the things she walked from. Yet, the basket on her back made it all seem honorable. It was a burden she carried, perhaps... To walk out into this cold hell, to gather and supply, to carry it through the falling snow... It was not a pleasant fate, but a worthy and noble one? Perhaps... Perhaps it was. Tetsuko's mind drifted off to the various other woodblock paintings that she'd become enamored with as a child, finding their ancient air so alluring and intriguing. Her mind was filled with such images as they made the transfer and finally headed into Kashima proper, where Tetsuko could reintroduce Elise von Eisenberg to the small city they loved so much... A place of hard work and unity, the perfect location to help forge an iron heart. As they stepped out from the station, however, it quickly became clear that things were not entirely going to plan, as Tetsuko sighed in frustration while she pulled out her phone. Now that it had come to this, she was certain he had been the one her Grandfather had called to help... No one else would be late... "He said he'd ask one of his students or one of the masters to come to pick me up but... Evidently, they're running late... Or they've gotten distracted..." Tetsuko grumbled out that last bit while she typed out a quick message on her phone, informing her Grandfather that the help he'd sent was late, and to call her when he knew the master was on his way. Tetsuko didn't know what had that damned wanderer distracted this time, but hopefully, it was actually something important. As Tetsuko boiled in her own frustrations, Elise made a brief suggestion that they head into the town. As much as Tetsuko wanted to simply get right into the training... It didn't at all sound like a bad idea. The Germanic girl seemed fine either way, but Tetsuko shook her head dismissively. "No, you're... Yeah, it would be good to check out the town." Tetsuko sighed, lifting up her luggage and walking ahead of Elise and towards the city entrance. "It's still morning, so most of the port and steel workers are still out, but there are a few businesses still up and open in the city at this time of day that might be worth checking out." The Shindou girl explained, glancing back at Elise. "Let's check out the old man's smithy, he's bound to know something..."With a reference Elise may well be familiar with, Tetsuko set off into the city, off away from the port areas and into the parts of it where the contrast between modernity and age-old architecture and tradition became even more apparent... And as the girls walked off, behind them a streak of black fur might be spotted, before quickly departing... -------------------- Toward the edge of town, the city's origins were even more apparent. A few smaller villages had been the foundation of Kashima, making it's status a city relatively young, even if the architecture and history that made up its core was much less so. Out there, things were mostly silent, as most of the workers around this residential area had jobs within the steel mills in Kashima's industrial zone. One building in particular, however, still emanated plenty of smoke, heat, and noise... A large iron structure, a modern Western-style blacksmith. "Hah.. This place never changes, at least." Tetsuko sighed with relief, feeling the heat of the forges already cut through the winter chill. As she stepped inside the place, ushering Elise behind her, voices immediately rang out, blacksmiths distracted from their work. "Tetsuko-sama!?" "What are you doing here?" "Oi, someone got Tsuchikawa-san!" "Pipe down, I can hear you!" Tetsuko immediately recognize the deep, gravelly voice, one Elise might even remember from brief trips to Kashima in the past. Ever swordsman needed a sword, and no sword could exist without a proper blacksmith. That was where Tsuchikawa-san had made his place in Kashima. From a separate workshop, a behemoth of a man would suddenly walk out, draped in soot-covered clothing and a blacksmith's apron. He looked like he was chiseled right out of stone. As in, his body was literally made of stone! "Ahaha, Tetsuko-sama! I heard you were coming home for a bit." Tsuchikawa would bellow out, stepping forward toward the pair and flashing a wide rocky smile. "Didn't know you were coming here though? Didn't tell me you were bringing Miss von Eisenberg either!" Tetsuko just smiled softly and glanced away at that assessment... Of course he knew about Elise, it was no surprise there that someone had mentioned it. Tetsuko, however, didn't know what else to say in that regard... "Yeah, I didn't know we were coming here either. But Gai-san was late picking me up, so we figured we'd drop by here and see how the city's been doing." Tetsuko explained simply, seeming cold even in the presence of this hearty goliath. Even he, however, frowned in response to her question. "It's... Well, they've been coming at us harder than usual..." Tsuchikawa-san admitted regretfully, a hint of anger in his tone. "The Koyanagi Clan ain't giving up anytime soon..."

Elise always had an incredible difficulty lying to Tetsuko, to the point it was borderline impossible for her to do so. In the end, how could she possibly be fine when the hint of tears were gathering in her eyes and she was bitting her lip lightly as if to surpress the pain. But she had no choice, Tetsuko told her to stop relying on her, to stop being a burden and the Germanic lass hoped that if she no longer was a burden, that Tetsuko might feel better once more, that the warmth she adored and longer for would return at last. However, similar to the coldness of winter, the warmth she sought was eerily absent, and as such she was forced to endure, endure all by herself even if her beloved knight was at her side. The words spoken by Tetsuko's grandmother continued to plague her: What was it that Tetsuko needed? Was her presence truly enough to help her beloved childhood friend? Was it enough to make that warmth return? A part of her was doubting it, and it made it all the more terrifying to deal with.
Silence continued to linger as they disembarked the train, a part of her secretly longed for Tetsuko to call out to her, to notice her suffering and start comforting her, but it was not meant to be. She was truly told to stop relying on her, and for once Elise von Eisenberg felt alone, isolated and empty despite the fact the one she longed for was right at her side. It reminded her of that image of a castle, she was a princess within a castle, trapped within its highest tower. In the past she had a knight, a lovely knight who used to take her out into the world, a world she had grown to love because she explored it alongside her, but now? Her knight seemed to be avoiding her, refusing to enter the castle, to brave its trials to reach her once more. She shook her head lightly, as if to vanquish the tears and pain that burdened her, both body and heart as she braved onwards. Elise was nothing if not stubborn, and she would continue to endure if it would get her a chance to find that warmth once more.
Kashima was a small city, but it had a charm that the larger settlements lacked. It was a place weathered by time and tradition, and the burgundy-haired lass found Kashima to have its own charm, a rather unique beauty which couldn't be found elsewere. It was a place of hard work, unity and dilligence, in a way some said it was the town where the last of the samurai spirit of yore dwelled, and as she briefly glanced sideways to Tetsuko she could see why she was so fond of this town: This town reminded her immensely of her childhood friend. A hardworking and earnest girl, whose loyalty and honor were unmatched by anyone she had met in her entire life. Even at Yuuei, a school for heroes she felt that Tetsuko embodied the virtues of true heroism much stronger than anyone else. Noticing Tetsuko's sigh she raised her gaze up at the girl, seemingly a bit curious about what might had happened to the person meant to escort them.
"I see..." The girl muttered softly as Tetsuko grumbled at the fact that whoever had gone here to pick up Tetsuko was evidently running late or gotten distracted, she had to admit it was curious to imagine a practitioner or master of a place like Kashima to simply get 'distracted', it felt odd to her but she didn't voice it. Of course, her suggestion had been made, pondering about what Tetsuko might think about it when the iron-blooded lass acknowledged the usefulness of her suggestion. "Mhmm, it's always a good idea to gather as much information as possible." Elise commented, yet as Tetsuko sighed and walked ahead of her Elise felt that unpleasant coldness once more, a hand raised lightly, as if attempting to reach for Tetsuko's arm but after a moment hesitatingly lowered it.
No, she had to stop doing that, it was because of her that Tetsuko had been burdened. She didn't have the right to cling to her, and so she simply shifted her hand into the pocket of her jacket and walked slightly faster to catch up with the Shindou so that she was walking in her footsteps. "I guess he might know something considering how many people visit him." She didn't like this... this coldness, it made her feel so lonely, so afraid... so scared. Even if she couldn't bring herself to say it out loud.
With Tetsuko walking off into the city Elise was quick to chase after her, swiftly trying her utmost to keep up with the girl's stride which fortunately wasn't too hard after the moments of rest she had been able to enjoy during the train ride, oblivious to the streak of black fur which trailed them...
Approaching the edge of town the city's origins clearly shown themselves, in the end the roots of Kashima were found in the existence of several smaller villages which had served as the foundation of Kashima, even if it was a city in name, the architecture was quite different from what you might find in a city like Musutafu. The place was silent, quiet even as most of the denizen of this residential area were no doubt at work within the steel mills within Kashima's industrial zone, yet the building up ahead, the blacksmith brought back some sweet memories of childhood trips within the girl's mind.
"..." She smiled sorrowfully at Tetsuko's words, as if her comment had made Elise wonder whether the comment about things changing was a reference to their relationship. She truly had been selfish, burdering Tetsuko with such a quest, making her search something, experience something which she was unfamiliar with and no doubt perhaps even scared to discover and experience.
The deep gravelly voice reminded her of a man, a man she was somewhat familiar with: As a town of swordsmen every warrior needed a blade, and a blade needed proper maintenance, and nobody was as good at it in Kashima as a certain man was... That man's name was Tsuchikawa, the blacksmith of Kashima. She paused for a moment as the smith smiled at them, his greeting as friendly and energetic as always, leading Elise to make a slight bow of her upper-body, as if to try to mimic the proper eastern greeting that she had seen so many people do before during her trips here as a child, but afterwards adding her own bit of flair by rising upwards and making a playful wave of her hand. "It's good to see you again Tsuchikawa-san." the girl said politely, trying her best to smile even if a shadow lingered behind her gaze, the usual spark of cheery liveliness absent.
When he frowned and explained the problems plaguing Kashima the burgundy-haired lass inquired with a hint of curiosity. "The Koyanagi clan?" She inquired in confusion, not recalling their name. "How come they have been harrassing you? I thought with Tetsu's family overseeing Kashima's wellbeing nobody would be foolish enough to threaten this place." Yeah, if Tetsuko's grandfather went out there she expected their entire clan would piss their pants!

As cold as it was in the approaching Winter season, it did not yet snow in Kashima... That meant that there was no beauty to the coldness that followed them around throughout the city, as they left the station and ventured into the edge of the portside locale. Tetsuko had instinctively opened her hand slightly, for a moment expecting Elise to take it as usual... However, she quickly closed her hand, knowing she deserved not the warmth of someone like Elise von Eisenberg. A useless knight who had failed to protect her lord was better off walking alone as a ronin... Yet, even know, Tetsuko knew she was causing Elise pain. Every word the Germanic girl spoke was like daggers in Tetsuko's heart, making evermore clear just how damned she was. Allowing Eli to rely on her like this, leaving her no choice but to step headlong into the cold while she allowed Elise the happiness in independence she deserved... Tetsuko couldn't help but feel an incredible amount of loathing, sheer disgust and disdain, directed entirely inwards. The burdens she carried, she had failed to live up to them, and this was the result. Her incompetence, her cowardice, her uselessness had all resulted in their current predicament. Tetsuko Shindou, the loveless and desperate samurai, did not deserve the graces of a noble lord like Elise. In many ways, the scenery of Kashima encapsulated what had brought them this far, and what might yet save them. The city was this wonderful contrast between modern industry and age-old tradition. It thrust itself headfirst into the future, slogging away and working hard to build a bright new world, while never forgetting the history that had brought them there... Like Kashima, Tetsuko and Elise were plagued by their past... By their uncertainty of it, or by their unwillingness to allow it to be vulnerable... The past, and the burden it was to carry weighed them down all throughout their travels in Kashima. Their footsteps echoed across quiet streets, and the city that loved unity was now plagued by these two people who could not find it within themselves to step closer to each other. Out of fear of worthiness, of hurting each other, of the love they may or may not carry... While Elise feared the cold, too scared and desperate to cut through it, Tetsuko was only stepping further toward it, aware of the burden she carried but taking on what she thought was a noble pursuit nonetheless. Just like the woman from the painting... This weight, this burden, this coldness, it followed them all throughout Kashima, it was the plague that addled them, it was the thing that threatened to tear apart everything that had happened between them... And it terrified them both. Tetsuko, who didn't think of the future, who thought only of how to now protect her past... And Elise, who only had the future left, and yet didn't know how to make it one worthy of herself and her lover... This darkness, this melancholy, it followed them all the way to the blacksmith. However, it wasn't the only thing following them... -------------------- "Whoopsie! Knew I was forgetting something!" A certain voice exclaimed in a place a far yet near, surrounded by steel and smoke. His eyes were closed, but the sound of a busy factory at work behind him still rung in them, as did the sound of the hooligans jumping the chainlink fence he was guarding. They never learned, did they! "Sorry Tetsu-tan, looks like there's some more work for me to do first~ Keep following them, Melas." The sound of a bat struck threateningly against a hand was hard, followed shortly after by the unsheathing of a sword, as this certain man opened his eyes. He held his blade playfully out in front of him, pinching the edge of it, and bending it back like it was rubber... Well, as long as he touched it, it may as well have been. "Time to beat up the trash~ I say that right?"-------------------- Back in the blackmsith, Tetsuko's words about change wrought more damage then she could know.. In the end, her resistance to change was foolish, and this pain it caused... Well, Tetsuko would learn well how little it was worth the trouble. The Shindou girl, unaware even now of just how foolishly she was hurting those she cared about, took Elise into the blacksmith, where Tsuchikawa already began to realize things were... Different between them. Blacksmiths weren't ones to pry, fortunately. They did their jobs and that was that, never questioning the intentions of the blades they were creating. That hardly meant they weren't knowledgeable, however, and when Tsuchikawa was asked about what he'd said he first looked to Tetsuko, who nodded in affirmation that he could handle the explanation. "That's just what you'd think, but these guys... They're more foolish than you could imagine." Tsuchikawa huffed, crossing his arms in disapproval and disgust. "They're just a small-time gang, feeling awful tough cause they cut a few deals with the Triads. They think their key to making it real big is through strongarming their way into Kashima. Y'see, it's quite a neat little set-up we've got here. The ports, the steel mills, the freight railway... It's a perfect working-class cover up for smuggling and laundering. Helps them impress the big boys and Triads." The stony man explained, pausing as he sighed quietly. "So, they try 'persuade' us into just caving in, taking their hush money and letting them do what they want. Harassing stores, tryna corrupt officials, and attacking the steel mills with lowly thugs who'll take the punishment just for a few bucks... They cause a mess of the place, hoping it'll cost us less to just pay them off. They've been at it for... Shit, who knows how long..."Tetsuko was quiet throughout, evidently already being aware of the situation, and being equally displeased by it all. "That's why the 'Shinsengumi of Kashima' are so damn important. It's where Gai-san is probably at right now, helping protect the steel mills... Something these days has the clan real fired up... Makes a man worry..." The blacksmith looked back at his shop, smiling in affection at this smith of his. "Don't hafta worry about me. This place is too important for me to let 'em have it if they come for it. It's the place I made Gai's Nagai-te, yer Grandpa's Kotōmaru, even her ma's Yoruame!" He threw his hands up in disbelief, looking like he could talk about his work all day... Not that he was planning too. "Anyway, that's about all I know. Ya needa meet up with Gai-san, he's probably over at the mills. He's quick as a damned fox, so don't worry about going to meet him, just kill time or something. Good to have ya back, Tetsuko-sama." Tsuchikawa bid them farewell as he headed back into his own workshop, and Tetsuko would usher Elise outside, where a momentary awkward silence awaited them. "...Where do you wanna kill time?" Suddenly, Tetsuko chimed in, though her voice was cold and quiet, she seemed to be genuinely asking this of Elise. "It's my fault you're out here, so... What do you wanna do?" However, it seemed Tetsuko's words, though forced, were still showing... Something. A bit of care, at least. Tetsuko couldn't stay silent for long. As much as she wanted, she couldn't entirely push Eli away... Besides, they had time to kill, it seemed…

Winter had its own beauty, at least to Elise the winter season was one she was quite fond of, at least once upon a time. To the burgundy-haired lass the fact she had enjoyed winter so much was primarily because she was able to endure the cold so easily thanks to the presence of a certain iron-blooded girl. Winter was a perfect excuse for her to snuggle up to Tetsuko, but the way things were right now? Elise obviously couldn't allow herself to bask in that radiating warmth, as was clear when all she saw was Tetsuko closing her hand, the same hand she would usually had offered the girl so eagerly. It felt so cold, numbing even to walk like this.
It was odd, she had truly never envisioned to feel like this, the way she couldn't reach Tetsuko even with the girl so close by her side. In a way it almost made Elise feel hopeless, despair infecting her heart. Was it because she tried to protect Rin from that vile monster known as Nick Cross? Was this coldness that separated her from Tetsuko her own doing? Was this coldness truly her own fault? Because she constantly relied on Tetsuko... Constantly burdened her with a weight too immense for her to bear. For a moment Elise couldn't help but think one of the darkest thoughts she had ever experienced: Maybe... Maybe it had been better if she had never woken up, so that she could at least have basked in that warmth she adored so much till her final breath.
In a way the scenery of Kashima was akin to a mirror which encapsulated the journey that had brought them here, the things that let them reach up to this point and that which might still save them. It was a beautiful yet tragic comparison, and perhaps part of what made Kashima be such an interesting location for this story to unfold, a story which would hopefully forge into a new future for the two girls. Although right now it was difficult to grasp the nature of that future, both being plagued by their past, and burdened by the things they carried within them.
Even as their footsteps echoed across quiet streets, the streets of a city which symbolized unity, the two girls who could at one point be considered the closest of friends, were now unable to step closer to each other. Both were plagued by their own insecurities, and to Elise it felt like the longer they walked, the further Tetsuko seemed to drift away from her. She wanted to call out to her, reach out to her but what in the world could she possibly say that might resolve things? The things which might finally make things right again...
A soft sigh escaped her lips, barely audible as the weight, this burden, the coldness that separated them weighted down upon them, following them through their trip across the city. It was exhausting, and yet something kept her from turning away, from making the same mistake she did toward Rin Kurama that day. Elise von Eisenberg wouldn't run away from this, and yet at the same time she was powerless, incapable of simply forcing her way through the cold storm that followed them. However, it seemed that coldness wasn't the only thing pursuing the two girls!
Back in the blacksmith, the coldness was still as intense as before, but fortunately... or perhaps, unfortunately, the blacksmith knew that it was not his task to pry into the affairs of those who came to him for his work, and when the man started his explanation the burgundy-haired lass nodded her head attentively as the blacksmith started explaining. It seemed that the clan causing troubles were far more foolish than your typical crew of hoodlums and criminals. A small-time gang who felt overconfident cause of a few deals with the triads, and as a result believed that by strongarming their way into Kashima. It seemed like typical villanious business, yet it made sense in a bitter way: trying to bribe people, inflicting damage so that the people of Kashima would realize that paying them would likely be less expensive than dealing with the damage might be.
When Tetsuko spoke explained that the person they were waiting for was likely helping protect the steel mills, that he likely had been there to deal with the clan which had been more aggressive than usually, her initial suggestion would had been to visit the steel mills, to see if they could help Gai, but instead Elise felt herself unsure of that idea. After all, getting herself recklessly involved into things was part of the things which had burdened Tetsuko so immensely, so she simply remained quiet as Tsuchikawa bid them farewell and returned to his store, making her follow Tetsuko back outside as an awkward silence lingered in the air.
When asked about where she wanted to go next, about what she wanted to do to kill time till Gai-san caught up with them Elise felt a tiny ember amidst the cold, barely noticeable but still there. "..." She remained quiet for a moment, averting her gaze from Tetsuko as she bit her lip, trying to think of what to say when finally she began. "I..." She paused, recalling a certain vivid memory from their childhood. There used to be a very large tree nearby, a tree they used to play at a lot when the two of them were at Kashima. "D-Do you remember that large tree near here? The one we used to climb all the time when we were little?" She could only hope Tetsuko would remember it, one of her sweetest memories involved a promise, a promise as they both had placed paper tags involving their promise inside a small parting of the tree, seemingly having been a former nest of an animal. However, if Tetsuko decided to take her there like usual, it would seem luck was unkind to them today, for the spot the tree had stood at had been oddly empty, the tree cut down, uprooted and replaced by a storehouse...

"Now now, have you learned your lesson? Probs not, but you know I gotta ask~"
Groans escaped the thugs strewn about the ground before the foreigner, who sheathed his un-bloodied blade back into its scabbard while he hummed some old tune to himself. Hands brushed off the dirt that had gotten all over his white robes, tutting to himself as he idly fixed up his hair and turned back to the ne'er-do-wells one more time. "Coppers are gonna be here any second now, so sit tight, mmkay? I know, I know, it's cold out, but you can all huddle up in a nice cozy cell together~" Having gathered himself well enough, he began to go through a rather odd ritual. He jumped into the air, and as his foot touched the ground again... It bent beneath them, just like the surface of trampoline!
"Now, to find Tetsu-tan and Eli-tan before the bossman gets angry... Well, angrier..."
Like a trampoline, the ground pushed him back up even higher, granting him increased momentum as he descended downward again. With each bounce, he got higher and higher, until finally, he buckled his knees and pushed off with force as the trampoline-like ground launched him into the air, off into the direction of a certain troubled pair... All the while, humming that old tune~
'I would walk 500 miles, and I would walk 500 more~'
At a distance somewhat less than 1000 miles away, the pair would be now outside the blacksmith, where they'd learned the gravity of the situation. Tetsuko had always been aware of the 'Koyanagi Clan' and their villainy, they were infamous within Kashima for being crooks and leeches, parasites that wanted to latch onto the city for their own selfish needs. The same parasites who Tetsuko had always suspected were responsible for... The thought was enough to cause an anger to boil within Tetsuko, yet one that only seemed to make her colder. These were the kinds of people she needed to be strong enough to protect those she cared about from... These were also the kinds of people Tetsuko had failed to stop, time and time again, from ripping away her past.
It only seemed to make even clearer how useless and pathetic the young swordswoman was, how much she'd failed all the responsibilities left on her shoulders. How much she might yet fail Elise... The very thought terrified her, it only made her seem even more frigid and alone in the snowstorm that enveloped the pair of lovers. The only ember in that frozen hell, the one they both found themselves stuck in, was a slight warmth Tetsuko was starting to feel being in her hometown... Meeting people who had made her who she was, remembering the origin she needed to safeguard. It made her the slightest, slightest bit warmer, yet at the same time, it also emphasized the burden she carried. The burden she could never dare to give up. The burden of a warrior whose treasured things hung precariously in the balance.
Tetsuko trudged through the snow, yet that warmth, it made her glance back, briefly. Much like the woman in the painting, Tetsuko couldn't help but look back at the pleasant and warm lie she'd been living. That she was actually worthy of standing at Elise's side. Her offer to Eli was delivered coldly, but she was still interested in what Elise might suggest. That man was going to certainly take his time, so they should at least find something fun to do. The suggestion the Eisenberg girl gave, however, surprised Tetsuko. She did indeed remember that tree, closer towards the center of the city, in a small wooded area that wasn't too far from Shiroyama Park. "Yeah... I remember it..." Tetsuko uttered quietly, many memories of that tree coming to mind. How they'd climb it and sit in the higher branches, where Tetsu would watch her mother and father train in the nearby park... The swordswoman also remembered the promise they'd made, preserved on tiny paper tags that were tucked away inside the tree. Promises of a time long past, of a time when Tetsuko actually believed she was worthy of Elise. In the state she was now... Tetsuko couldn't turn down the opportunity to revisit that past she treasured.
"Alright... Let's go there..." Those words, however, would only damn Tetsuko to fall deeper into the snowstorm of her own creation.
The pair would walk their, once again with a distance between them that made it far from pleasant. Yet, as they approached, things would immediately start to be noticeable off. The trees that made up this little area weren't visible from a distance, and it looked like things had been even more built up since then. Tetsuko's brow began to furrow in concern, walking at a faster pace into the formerly wooded area until she reached the point where she was certain that large tree had once been... It was nowhere to be found. In its place, a storehouse.
Why? Why did everything have to change?
The Shindou girl simply stood in silence, her body frozen and deathly still. This was, perhaps, the most physical testemant she'd come across yet to her failures, to her insignifcance and inability to uphold her responsibilities. The past Tetsuko swore to protect, it had slipped away from her hands once again, and almost symbolically, she had lost the evidence of a promise made to Elise long ago. A promise now broken, as it ought to be, for both their sakes. Elise von Eisenberg was a princess that did not deserve such a lowly and pathetic knight. Tetsuko Shindou did not deserve such a kind and forgiving princess. That was simply the way it was.
Tetsuko felt a moisture build up in her eyes, and she quickly raised a hand to wipe it away, forcing herself not to shed a tear for her own failures... To do so seemed pitiable and disgusting. All Tetsuko could do know was fight to protect what past she had left, right? To safeguard that certainty she held dear... To do so til her final days, upholding the burden and responsibility of her family. Hopefully... Passing honorably. A future that only revolved around the past seemed a cruel one, but for the battered and useless Shindou girl... What other future was there?

The Koyanagi clan was a name that Elise obviously wasn't all too familiar with. Certainly, she had heard the name in passing, but it was far from the type of knowledge that Tetsuko had about them. After all she was not a local here, in fact, she was not even Japanese despite having lived within Tokyo for ten years. No, Elise von Eisenberg was easily described as a foreigner, and it was how she felt right now: alone all by herself, even if she had Tetsuko by her side. She had remained quiet for a while, trying her utmost to conceal the grief that was building up within her, unaware of just how tragic luck would be upon the pair. A momentary silence passed as she wondered if Tetsuko's grandmother had not made a mistake: Was she truly the one Tetsuko needed? Was she the one who could help the iron-blooded knight find the answers her heart sought? Then why... Why in the world did she feel so powerless right now?
Even as Tetsuko trudged onwards through that snow, the smaller girl who chased her footsteps had it much less easy to catch up to her. Tetsuko was a warrior, and Elise was a spoiled princess who had only known warmth the last ten years thanks to Tetsuko, so where Tetsuko forced her way deeper into the storm, Elise continued to stumble and collapse, the only reason for her to get up each and every time she fell being the girl who walked up ahead. She was stubborn, she was childish and clingy, but she was also madly in love with the girl before her, and that was as much a curse as it was a blessing. A light nudge of her head was made as Tetsuko commented that she remembered it, the promises they had made back then underneath that tree. For Elise the request to visit that place had a purpose, a meaning so intense that words could barely begin to describe it. She had wanted to visit the tree, a memory of their shared past and retrieve the paper tags, hoping she could banish the coldness by reminding Tetsuko of their promises. Tetsuko was loyal and honorable above all, and a sworn promise to her would surely not be broken, not even this coldness could do that. She just needed... needed to give Tetsuko a reminder.
She nodded her head lightly in agreement as Tetsuko accepted her idea, and as the two of them started to walk Elise started to think already about what to say, about what to do. Surely she could find the answer there, the one thing she needed to reach Tetsuko, that promise they had shared. The memory still lingered vividly in her mind, of two girls trying their best to write their promise on the paper tags in their cleanest handwriting. Elise's mother had praised the girls for their handwriting, especially Elise had practiced hard because of her fondness of writing letters for Tetsuko, letters she obviously had tried to write in Japanese. That memory of how they worked together to place the tags inside the tree and declared their promise to each other. Tetsuko would always protect her, and she would never leave Tetsuko's side. In a way it was a promise that was entirely the opposite of the current situation: She had always relied on Tetsuko, and now... She shook her head attempting to banish the thoughts from her mind as she chased Tetsuko's footsteps.
However, it was at that moment, the moment they approached the area that she started to notice something felt off. The trees that filled this particular area of her memories were nowhere to be seen, their little spot where they often played at seemed 'different', and just like Tetsuko, the burgundy-haired lass her pace grew faster, footsteps hurriedly clashing onto the road as they finally reached the point where the large tree had been. For a moment she could have sworn the tree was there, but like a mirage it faded away, showing just a large gloomy storehouse in its place.
Why... Why did the things dear to her have to be taken away?
The burgundy-haired lass had been containing her pain, her sorrow till now, but it seemed this was the point she shattered. The eyes that had initially started to widen in disbelief soon softened as moistness started to gather in her eyes. "W-Why..." Elise began among soft sobs as the tears she had suppressed started to roll down her cheeks, her hands shakily reaching for her face, attempting to wipe away the tears, but it seemed to do little to hold the tide of tears that flowed.
If Tetsuko didn't shed a tear, then Elise clearly was shedding them for both of them as she cried softly. "Why is everything I treasure slowly disappearing?" The girl reached with a hand for the storehouse, as if she tried to reach for the tree that was long gone, but instead her hand merely grasped for the air before her. "Do... Do you remember?" The girl asked with a shaking voice as she looked with her tearful gaze at Tetsuko, hesitatingly she took a step forwards toward Tetsuko, a hand shakingly reaching halfway between her. "That promise?" She asked as she felt her hand tremble lightly, insecurity and sorrow overwhelming her. The one she needed right now, stood right in front of her. So close and yet out of reach.
"T-Tetsu..."
She whispered pleadingly, she wanted to tell her, beg her to reach back, to turn back to her side, yet as much as she wanted to scream the words, all that merely escaped her lips was a soft whisper, barely audible over her sobs. "Please come back..."
Yet even amidst the coldness, the storm which threatened to separate them it seemed there was a raging fire approaching, a presence which no doubt would be a significant force in changing this tragic situation the two girls found themselves trapped in.

Tetsuko had known, ever since her mother was rendered a cripple, her body, and spirit broken to pieces, that the world was an unfair and godless place. Or, rather, if there was actually a God, they were a cruel and vicious sort, the kind that scoffed at those who showed kindness and vulnerability, the good people of this world who deserved nothing but happiness. People like the Eisenbergs... Tetsuko had known, yes, that the world was cruel, ruled over by a God that was apathetic at most, yet she still carried on in spite of that cruelty, in the hopes that she might be able to protect that in this world which was delicate and beautiful... Even if herself did not exist among them.
She was a callous and scarred warrior, reaching down with rough hands to shield the precious flowers in her garden of treasures. Yet, those hands could not protect them from the elements that surrounded. Elements of evil, of deception, of selfishness and simple cruelty. Tetsuko had watched in pain, time and time again, as the flowers in her hands withered away, falling between her fingers no matter how tightly she held on. With each passing petal, Tetsuko held on even tighter to what little remained. Was this the burden of the woman in the snow? To know that, despite her efforts, her surrounds were far too cruel, her burden far too strong? Was that why she was alone? Was it why she looked backward... Towards an easier, calmer life...
Tetsuko had always been uncertain on that. Now, however, she was entirely sure this was the case. Standing before her, that storehouse was a mockery of what little hope Tetsuko still held that she could protect the past as she was now. It laughed down at her, it laughed in the spot the promise she'd made had once stood. In reality, it was nothing more than a tree and a treasured childhood memory, but with everything that had transpired as of late... It was the straw that broke the camel's back. It was the final, definitive proof to Tetsuko Shindou that she was pathetic. Her dreams, her past, her loved ones, they would all slip right through her hands while she wailed at the heavens, such was the fate of a weak and accursed warrior.
What choice did she have, but to march on, alone, into the cold, pushing away all those who didn't need to suffer her incompetence and uselessness? It was a burden that Tetsuko alone had to carry, the burden of her own weakness. Tetsuko didn't need others relying on her only so she could fail them, time and time again... She didn't need her foolish and impossible kind princess chasing after her, trusting Tetsuko with heart and body. Elise's body... The scars it bore were already plenty of proof that Tetsuko had failed her. During Semper Fi, the swordswoman hadn't even been conscious when Elise had been forced to put herself in harm's way just to protect the one who was supposed to protecting her. That had only been the beginning, and the cruelties of Nick Cross made it doubtless that Tetsuko Shindou could not shield Elise from bodily harm.
As for her heart... What more was there to say, than that Tetsuko couldn't return Elise's love? There was definitely an affection she felt for Elise, and an attraction of the physical sort, but love? Tetsuko didn't even know what it was, what it felt like. Elise could say it without blinking, that she loved Tetsuko, while the ironblooded girl... Couldn't say it at all. Perhaps... She was just entirely 'loveless'. Perhaps Tetsuko was simply a cold and heartless being. Perhaps... It was foolish to think she could have ever had a heart. Humans had hearts. Tetsuko... was merely a blade. A blade that couldn't stop hurting the people she cared most about.
Tetsuko forced herself not to cry, a hand pressed against her forehead and covering her eyes as her body trembled lightly every few seconds, trying to keep it all in. Elise... Was not nearly is suppressive of her own emotions. Tetsuko heard her treasured one's sobs, and felt the blade slip deeper into her own core. The Eisenberg girl lamented why the things she treasured fell away, and Tetsuko knew the answer... It was because Elise was foolish enough to trust Tetsuko to protect them. Tetsuko's free hand clenched into a fist at her side, feeling her self-directed loathing and frustration boiling over more and more.
Elise was before Tetsuko, reaching out towards her, asking if she remembered the promise... Tetsuko only looked away, her next words wrought with pain and conflict. "What use is a promise... It's already broken..." The promise... To be Elise's knight... Well. What knight would allow her princess to cry like this?
Tetsuko's own self-loathing, her insecurities and anxieties, were boiling over just like Elise's. Only, her reaction was much different... All Tetsuko could think to do was seclude unto herself... So when Elise begged her, so painfully, to come back... There was only one thing the swordswoman could say. There was only one thing that this girl believed to be the honorable choice... To move on into the cold, alone, to not let herself burden Elise anymore.
"... I can't..."
Those words, so frigid in the air, would be met with an intense cold as Tetsu looked away, leaving the silence deafening between them... This was it. This was where they finally realized that they could not move on. That Tetsuko Shindou was not willing to delve into her own heart, nor loosen her desparate focus on the past. That Elise von Eisenberg wasn't willing to brave the snowstorm that consumed them. That none of this... Was worth the pain. This was the moment that happened...
Or, well, it would have been. If a foreign voice didn't soon sing through the air, that same old tune~
"Just to be the man who walked a thousand miles to fall down at your door~"
Tetsuko quickly looked up in realization, recognising the voice. Why... Why did he have to be arriving her now!? A strange sound resounded through the area rythmically, an elastic sound, like rubber bending then snapping back into place...
"Da da da... da da da! Da da da... Da da da!"
It was around then that the man suddenly fell from the sky. A foreigner, without a doubt, with dark skin and snow white hair, draped in long white robes, with a wide smile upon his face. He fell right onto the roof of the storehouse, backside first, where the roof bent beneath him like a trampoline. His wider surface area meant it didn't launch him up as much, so he just lightly bounced onto the ground before the pair, still smiling even as Tetsuko glared at him.
"I know, I know! I'm late, buuuuut, I'll buy you ice cream to make up for it! Aight? Sound goods yeah?" It wasn't until then that the man, who was quite clearly a Shindou swordsman with that blade now visible in his robes, realized that... Well, neither of the girls looked like they were in a good mood. His smile faded, grimacing with embarassment.
"Bad time?"

Elise was not naive to think that the world they lived was one from a fairy-tale. She had experienced too much suffering, endured too many hardships in order for her to be able to enjoy such an innocent view. No, she knew all too well that the world they lived in was cruel and unfair. And yet what was it that made this world, despite all the pain she had experienced worth living in? The answer had always been within her heart: The reason she found this world worth living in was because of the warmth that could be found there, and the warmest place was the sunshine her knight represented. Perhaps it was for that reason that she clung to her so strongly, and always continued to found herself seeking out Tetsuko's comfort. It was within her iron-blooded knight her arms that Elise felt the most comfortable, the warmest and most secure, even if she had endured so much already.
Perhaps it was for that reason that she cared so much, that she longed to show Tetsuko the answer in the form a physical memory of their past, the past the two of them treasured so immensely, hoping it would provide them strength they needed to forge a future. Yet what future was there to be found, when the princess found her knight turning her blade against her? Cutting down the past, slicing through the memories and promises they made. It was too much for Elise to bear.
She had expected that her words would reach Tetsuko, that she would be able to reach through the cold storm that haunted the two of them, but nothing had prepared her for the things that were waiting to happen. Even if her body had mostly healed from the injuries she had endured, safe for a single one upon her chest from the aftermath of Thunder Shock's attempt to murder Tetsuko, the scars inflicted upon her heart were unhealed, a damaged heart that was only kept from shattering by a sliver of hope, a hope that she could make things right, that she could and would restore things the way they were.
When Tetsuko commented that their promise was broken Elise shook her head violently, another shaking step made toward her knight. "No- I-I" she wanted to say more, her hands attempting to reach for Tetsuko's face, as if she tried to hold the girl's cheeks and tell her everything would be fine as long as she returned, as long as they had each other, When those words, so frigid in the air left Tetsuko's lips Elise staggered backwards, the tears which had slightly been flowing down along her cheeks subdued, instead a look which seemed to be just as much sorrow as terror appearing in her eyes.
That look upon Elise's face was quite familiar, one she had shown only once at the dorms of Yuuei when she received that horrible news, yet this time there wasn't a way for her mind to cope with it, for her heart to trick itself into a state of denial. Instead the girl's hands lowered to her side and she stepped away, a few steps but it was clear that something had changed. The attempt to brave the storm, to rekindle the warmth she had sought. In her mind Elise felt that her knight had done the unthinkable, if she had turned her blade upon her she could have at least tried to pacify her, to calm her anger and embrace her, to let her know that it wasn't Tetsuko's fault.
But this? This silence was akin to watching her knight walk away, stepping away without looking back. If there was one thing, one sliver of hope that Elise von Eisenberg always clung onto, then it was the thought that she would never be alone, that Tetsuko would always be there for her. But that hope was shattered, that trust betrayed, a promise broken and... She was abandoned. The terror slowly numbed away from her expression as she instead stared blankly at Tetsuko, there was no more embers of hope, nothing... in a way it was as if Tetsuko's words had been a blade which severed straight through her heart.
A singing voice resounded out of nowhere, but it felt so distant, in a way it almost felt like it didn't matter, but when the foreigner's arrival came he certainly would be in for quite a tragic sight. As he made his rather grand entree and Tetsuko glared at the man, Elise could only turn her gaze at his general direction, unfocused but the tears in her eyes clearly suggested what had happened. "..."
She didn't run this time, but neither did she reply, frozen in place, just like her heart currently was, a shattered and broken relic of the past. "..." The burgundy-haired lass averted her gaze, a hand shakingly reaching for her side as she attempted to control her body, to keep it from shaking. Even as he said he was late and offered them ice-cream, something which would usually lift the girl's spirits up immensely, what she had endured just now when made it so that when he looked at both girls the only thing Elise answered with was a feeble nod of her head to show it was indeed a bad time.
She couldn't do it, right now even just looking toward Tetsuko was enough to make the tears resurface, the words fresh upon her mind so instead she meekly lowered her head, her gaze at her feet, quite reminiscent of when she had first been in Japan, back when she had been enduring the bullying and tried to not show her suffering. Back then she had felt quite similar. Alone, hopeless and vulnerable and those words were a perfect example to describe how she was feeling currently. Despair would not even begin to justify calling it. Then again, she could only hope that Tetsuko would at least take charge of the conversation, or the foreigner himself would piece things together.

It hurt to say it. Yet, Tetsuko knew... She had to say it.
This was the only thing Tetsuko's mind could conjure. The only chance she had to spare Elise future pain, future agony that she would undoubtedly suffer in the hands of a useless wannabe knight. Even if it hurt her now, even if Tetsuko's face contorted with pain, hidden behind her hand, as Elise began to wear an expression of sorrow, of terror, of hurt... This was, even now, a display to Tetsuko of just how stupid she was. Hurting Elise like this... Was it the only way she could think to spare her?
Like a blade, Tetsuko's only intention was to cut, that was her accursed existence. To call herself a warrior would be an insult to those with the strength and capabilities to fight with vigor and honor. Tetsuko was, as she thought, nothing more than a blade as she was now. It would take honing and sharpening to make her anything more... It would take training that she could only accept with the knowledge that she would no longer be burdening those she cared about. These were all things Tetsuko told herself as she took in Elise's crying expression, suffering deeply at the mere sight of it, suffering even deepr at the solitude of this pain. Tetsuko's choice was, in her mind, to suffer the pain of the snowstorm alone, into eternity... Tetsuko only hoped it was worth the temporary pain Elise was feeling now. Tetsuko only hoped this would be better for the both of them... No, it had to be.
Elise... Could surely recover from the pain she felt now. The Germanic girl wasn't alone because she didn't have Tetsuko, that was a foolish thought... She still had her brother, her friends, all of whom held her dear. Tetsuko had faith in them... In those who had really saved Elise in the past... More than she had faith in herself. Thus... Wasn't it only wise, to leave Elise in their care?
This was the only way they could move forward. Apart, without someone as kind and delicate as Elise having to rely on the coarse protection of the heartless swordswoman. It was the only way Tetsuko could move on and protect her past, to become strong enough to honor her family, to do it all without causing Elise any more pain was necessary. It was the only way she could live up to her mother's legacy. By braving the cold by herself, by carrying the burden alone, by letting the snowfall only on her own shoulders. It was the 'only' way. To Tetsuko, who loathed uncertainty and risk, who harbored incredibly deep insecurities and anxieties, she couldn't help but force herself to believe that no other option existed. That the choice she was making was simply the only one available if she wanted to achieve her goals without hurting the people she cared about.
It was, however, a fool's delusion. No, more than that. A child's delusion. Tetsuko, still a child, still trapped in the past, in this city... Had made that decision herself, and now, she had to suffer the consequences. Elise's pain was something that made Tetsuko feel like collapsing, like wailing in agony, like thrusting a blade into her own body for penance... Again, all foolish things. Childish things. As was Elise's growing belief that she couldn't save Tetsuko. For all these misguided and childish curses, perhaps... A wiser eye was needed.
And, well, there were few types of people as wise as the well-traveled man.
Just as the frigid atmosphere made Tetsuko feel like running, or like telling Elise more, explaining to her this was the only way things could be, he arrived, and in a fashion entirely like him. He'd always, in Tetsuko's eyes, had trouble taking things seriously, though he was many times smarter than he seemed. His inquiries about the bad time were met with feeble nods from both the girls, and his eyes quickly scanned over them.
"...Ohhhhh, right! The trees!" He suddenly chimed up, turning behind him to look at the storehouse. "Yeah, real shame, expansions tearing down nature, sucky stuff, I know~" Tetsuko furrowed a brow at him, at the man who seemed to be entirely off the mark... Yet that same man gave a strange look to Elise. A knowing one. A... Clever one. He grinned slightly, as if to tell her he knew more than he let on.
Tetsuko, however, was just as confused, but... Against explaining what had just happened, decided to roll with it. "... Wait, how did you know we were here?" Tetsuko asked quietly, trying to suppress all that had happened for a few moments... As if on cue, a streak of black fur once again darted behind them, out of sight...
"I guessed! Teehee~" With a finger to the corner of his mouth in a mock pose, he received only an unimpressed sigh from Tetsuko. "Anyway, ice cream! You girls look like you could need it. Plus, I want it too... Wait, dangit! Manners~" His offer still on the table, the foreigner turned to the still quiet Elise with a soft look.
"Pleasure to finally meet you, Frau Elise! Wie gehts dir?" He greeted with impeccably pronounced German. "You can call me Gai, everyone else does. Not my real name, but, y'know... Gaijin... Gai... Just kinda happened..." Revealing his nickname, he gave one last small smile to Elise before speaking aloud in her native tongue again... "Sollen wir später sprechen?" Indeed, in spite of his casual attitude... Gai had a power few possessed. The wisdom of a well-traveled man.
Tetsuko was already starting to realize that her talk with Elise wasn't going to be coming back up with him around, and she sighed lightly before speaking to him again. "Just... Take us to Grandfather." The Shindou girl commanded, not in the mood for any more of his shenanigans... Though, she'd still get them regardless. "Fine, bossypants! After some ice-cream for yourself and Eli-tan. You girls need some cheering up, and I wanna hear what you guys been up to over in Yuuei!" Eccentric as ever, it seemed Gai wasn't buckling on this. He soon began walking off, gesturing for the two to follow him while he hummed another old tune.
Tetsuko, dragging her luggage behind her, would follow after, stopping briefly to look to Elise... There was so much she wanted to say, but... Nothing regarding what had just happened would come out. "...Sorry about him..." Tetsuko uttered quietly, before gesturing Elise to walk along with Gai, deeper into the city, where ice cream awated...
