It was odd how despite the fact people might experience a horrible tragedy, the world continued to move on and society remained to walk forwards, relentlessly without looking back. In a way, some might even have considered it cruel. The recent events at the military demonstration camp had shaken up society, and that was putting it mildly. However, for some, the tragedies experienced were more personal. In the wake of the events during the Halloween period, Elise von Eisenberg had suffered severe injuries from her fight against the villainous man known as Nick Cross, the consequences of them having forced her into a comatose she had yet to be woken from. Things were looking unfavorable, to say the least, although it had been confirmed that she was aware and conscious, the reactions that showed this were few, in fact, the doctors had confirmed she only seemed to respond mostly to the presence of Tetsuko Shindou, as if the girl was the very reason Elise was struggling, that she was refusing to surrender to what might otherwise end her story.
Like usual a lone security guard was stationed at the door to the hospital, the reason behind it having been the missing whereabouts of the man responsible for this tragedy, alongside the awareness that Elise was still an important witness in this case. It could be that she possessed valuable knowledge about the motives of the villain, and as such the utmost precautions were taken to ensure her safety.
Still, once inside the room it seemed so serene, so tranquil in a way. Although it was, and still remained a hospital room it was clear that the girl had received a fair share of visitors, for her room was filled with all sorts of gifts. From traditional flowers to candy, fruit and even a specially assembled medical kit were signs of the various symbols of support that the students of U.A had left her. Even heroes like Red Horn had visited her, and yet it did little to wake the girl from her slumber.
Speaking of said girl, inside a simple hospital bed she was slumbering, almost like a casket that was meant to keep her in peace and undisturbed, a sight remniscent of the fairytale of a certain princess and a group of dwarves. But even as her expression looked calm and peaceful, none could have likely imagined the things the girl was experiencing currently.
To Elise it was akin to having her consciousness split into half. She was there, she was inside the hospital room yet her body refused to head any command, it was as if someone had taken the controller away and she was forced to simply watch, a captured spectator of a cruel game known as life.
Yet another part of her spend an intensive amount of time thinking. One such thing she was thinking about was about two people. Tetsuko Shindou had always been dear to her, dearest of all in fact and yet the selfish little princess had forced her beloved knight to carry such a painful burden. She wanted to wake up from her slumber, to apologize to Tetsuko, to voice the feelings buried deep inside her chest. Even after everything, she wouldn't be able to stop relying on her, because Tetsuko's support didn't only come through physical protection, she also safeguarded the girl's heart, their feelings for each other being a driving force for Elise to endure every trial and tribulation send her way.
Meanwhile, she found herself wondering a question recently: Why had she gone this far to protect Rin? Even after everything at the camp, when she tried to step away, to keep both of them from suffering further Elise couldn't help herself but to care. It was true, her actions had made her a 'shitty' friend to say the least, and even now the guilt of those memories still remained. But why did she stop Nick? It was as if her body had reacted on its own, a force much stronger than anything else, as if those feelings had been the strings to guide her body like a puppet, and she knew all too well why she had done so.
It was because she couldn't let go, Elise couldn't let go of the warmth she remembered, of the girl she had adored so much while working together at the infirmary. Even now she still wanted to help her, support her, protect her. She wanted to become worthy of being Rin's friend again.
But was it enough? Now that she knew what had happened that night Elise couldn't help but sometimes find herself wondering: Could I have prevented Rin's suffering? She didn't know for sure, but at the very least she could help prevent the nightmare from reaching Rin again.
Guilt at the past, and hope for the fact that Tetsuko and the police had dealt with Nick Cross blend together as Elise wondered if it would have been enough. Did her actions that night show her resolve? That no matter the pain, no matter the burden she still wanted to help. In the end, Elise was simply unable to let go of those she truly cared for.
Yet little did the girl know that she wasn't the only one struggling with doubts and guilt, for today she was about to have a visitor show up, who perhaps had become quite an important figure into Elise's life. And yet his presence alone would soon be the herald of that one thing that the Eisenberg needed to be made whole again: Hope, and even in those dark times there was no doubt that Elise von Eisenberg was surrounded by hope, an incredibly powerful force that might have been even more important in saving her, than any Quirk might have done.
In fact, neither her or the visitor could have possibly known that the hope they both sought, would take a form most unexpected, but for now? For now it was time for Kobayashi Touma to see the one he had sworn to protect.

The sky is grey, just like my mood. He did not remeber where he heard that phrase first. Perhaps in a videogame as a kid, or maybe a TV show; he wasn’t quite sure, but the words always remained with him for some reason, and he was often reminded of their veracity, as cliché as it was to be in a foul mood under foul weather. Clichés are clichés for a reason, because they work. That one was definitely from a TV show.
Kobayashi Touma shook his head. His thoughts always got confused like that when he was idle, as he was now, driving his car to the hospital, the jeep barely disguised as a SUV that served as his personal vehicle. It had proved useful already between Semper Fi and… Other events. There was another reason he hated driving under the rain. It reminded him of his failures. Perhaps he would never be able to reach Rinkusu Kurama again.
Again, he shook his head. You¡re getting confused again, Touma. It’s Elise. That’s the one you failed this time, said a voice in his head. You didn’t fail her, said the other. She went out and fought of her own volition, and lost out of her own lack of ability. You didn’t train her well enough, answered the first one. It’s your fault.
“Shut up,” grumbled Touma as he drove into the hospital’s parking lot. He couldn’t tell which one was the angel on his shoulder and which one was the devil.
He went through the motions automatically, like a robot, passing security check after another, dodging the rushing nurses and doctors as best as he could. The last thing he wanted to do was get in the way of the doctors now. He finally reached the room bearing the number he was told Elise von Eisenberg rested in.
And here she was, sleeping, and not waking up. There were gifts next to her; gifts she couldn’t see. A doctor explained to him all the hopeful signs of life that she was given and the fact that her quirk was working in her favor, but he barely listened. He was glad to hear that, of course, but it all felt like his student was covering for his mistakes. It felt wrong. It was supposed to be the master covering for his student. He was supposed to be the one here being worried about.
He sat on the chair next to her. Tried words. He was too tired to come up with good ones, and there was no one here anyway but here, so he just said the ones that came to mind. “Eisenberg-san… Elise… I’m sorry I couldn’t say that before. I never got the occasion to say it properly, but I am proud of you. I was worried when I heard about what happened at the camp, and I thought I would be relieved when I heard you made it out alright, but it wasn’t. Well, I was, but I was more proud than relieved. Proud that you stood up to adversity, to Thunder Shock like that. Proud that you didn’t forget your convictions and saved that enemy soldier. He…”
He paused for a second. How long had it been since he told someone so much? “He is in another wing of the hospital. Something was discovered about him… They thought him quirkless, but they discovered that his central and peripheral nervous system was made of copper wires instead of neurons and nerves. It was minor enough that it was never noticed before, but when Thunder Shock electrocuted him, he overloaded his wires. His entire nervous system… His ability to both think and feel are irremediably damaged. It would have been a thousand times worse had you not intervened.”
“That’s why I was so proud. You fought with conviction at heart, not with revenge. I was no proud, and now… Here you are. I got complacent. I relaxed my vigilance. I allowed this to happen to you.” Something that only happened once in a blue moon, at least from the perspective of Yueei students, happened: the principal bowed, to the unconsciosu Elise. “I’m sorry.”

There was only a coldness that lingered in the air as the principal spoke. It was hard to guess whether his words reached her or not, after all, she had shown only a few signs of awareness, and those seemed to be only provoked by the presence of Tetsuko Shindou. Indeed, to the man, it might have looked like there was no response. Were his words reaching her? Was his heartfelt apologize heard? The girl remained while the machine at her side continued to beep lightly at its same regular pace. No signs of potential change, but it was at that time a soft feminine voice reached out from the entrance of the room.
"Do not apologize Touma-kun." the voice began, and if he turned around he would no doubt spot the one the voice belonged to. A young woman, perhaps youthful even for her age appeared, and to most they would have easily mistaken her for Elise's older sister. However, it was Diana von Eisenberg, Elise's mother who stood in the doorstep. being gently guided along by a nurse who was pushing her wheelchair.
"Do you remember Eli when she first came to your school? My little girl was the type of person who wouldn't even dare to hurt a fly. She was unsure of everything, insecure and lost." It was true, Elise von Eisenberg had once been a pacifist to the extreme, but that all changed after she went to Yuuei and various events unfolded. She was someone who was unsure of what she wanted to do, a girl who was lost and had no goals or ambitions aside from her childish affection for her childhood friend.
"But she changed so much, didn't she? She gained the willpower, the resolve to stand up for the things she believes in. She fought against a villain who even the number one pro-hero considered a threat. She sought strength, not just in body but also will." Indeed, ever since that day that Touma promised her to teach how to use guns, Elise had always been dedicated and zealous in her studies. her mother nodded lightly at the nurse as she stopped the chair next to Elise's bed and continued to speak gently. "But even in her search for power, her desire for strength she didn't lose sight of her origins. She didn't forget what made her 'Elise von Eisenberg'. That soldier she saved, he might be irremediably damaged, but he'll survive cause of her interference. At her heart, Elise is a kind girl, a girl who perhaps cares too much."
She smiled briefly as she nodded her head. "Even now, even knowing of the danger she interfered in that villain's attempt to kidnap a schoolmate. I know, she told me about Rin-chan, and I believe that the fact she was willing to step in to protect her is just a sign of something Elise wants to tell us."
Indeed, there was an important message that Elise was trying to convey through her actions. "'I want to be a real hero also!' is what her actions at the camp and during the Halloween festival likely represented. So what do you think Touma-kun? Is my daughter, Your student, is she on her way to become a hero?"
Her gaze shifted toward Touma, a hand gently reaching out for his own as she pulled it lightly toward the bed, resting it next to Elise's while she tried to lightly push her body forwards with some effort, placing her daughter's hand on the man's as she whispered softly. "Go on, tell her Touma-kun, surely you know by now your words can reach her?"
And indeed, should he pay attention he would no doubt feel it, the faintest sense of a tiny pressure on his hand, as if Elise was trying her utmost to squeeze it.
"Do not apologize for teaching Elise what it means to be a hero. In the end, a hero will always find themselves forced to move, it's not wealth or fame that makes them act, it's because someone is in troubles that they find their body moving by itself. The same call of heroism my husband felt that day. And there will never be a reason for one to be ashamed of answering that call."
She closed her eyes and leaned slightly back inside the wheelchair. "I'm certain Eli will wake up, she's too stubborn of a girl to be defeated by something like this. So instead of apologizing, tell her of the future. My husband often loved to say that there are two things that an Eisenberg needs: Hope and Love, as long as they have both of those, nothing will break an Eisenberg. Of course, it's not literal, but I believe that as long as Elise is surrounded by hope and love she will return to us."

Nothing, of course. What did he expect? Did he expect Elise to wake up, thank him in tears for his magic words that brought her back to life, and go on her merry way? Of course he wasn't getting an answer. Of course he wasn't gonna walk away from that one easily. Of course--
A voice interrupted his thoughts from behind. His hand instinctively started to reach for the inside of his jacket -- where he held his service weapon holstered -- as he turned around, but he eased when he saw who was talking. Relief, surprise, and also a little anticiaption filled the principal.
Diana von Eisenberg was awake. How long has she been awake? started to think the former soldier as Elise’smother spoke, his thoughts consuming his attention span over her words. At least a few days. She was in a wheelchair still, and she didn't look too good either, but she was awake.
That was good news. The presence of close family often helped the comatose wake up. He knew from experience.
His chair fully turned now, he listened to what the mother had to say. She said that she was proud of Elise too. Proud of her changes and how she found determination in adversity. She said that she was kind, perhaps too kind. Where had he heard that before? But in a word, she was not blaming him. She was almost thanking him, even.
Cynical as it was, it came as a huge relief to the overworked principal, who already hated thinking that he did not have time for this on the way here. In the wake of Semper Fi, not every parent was happy with Yuuei. Some wet threatening to sue. At least it wouldn't be the case here. He couldn't help but let out a sigh.
The woman invited him to take Elise’s hand, going so far as to put her hand into his. She was right. There was the faintest hint of a squeeze here. It was good. Elise was responsive. She'd recover. Diana spoke some more. He kept listening.
He hadn't said a word until then. “Thank you,” he said, sincerely. “I don't believe Elise will break either. She definitely is too stubborn for that.” He smiled half a wistful smile. It only lasted a second before the principals face composed itself into its usual mask of impassibility. “And your husband… He truly was a hero.” His gaze went over Elise again, still holding the girls hand. “I just hope Elise won't meet the same fate. I've trained people before in the army, taught them to fight. Some got too confident. It got them…”
Killed, he thought but not said. “I wanted to teach the students better, but.. Here I am.”

Diana nodded her head calmly at his words. "Indeed, I think she got that stubbornness from her parents." The black-haired woman mused softly as she turned to look back at the slumbering Elise. The moment that her husband was discussed she had gone silent for a moment, yet her lips curved into a gentle smile as she nodded her head lightly in response. "I'm certain he would be glad to hear those words. Even now I believe he is still here among us, at the very least in spirit." Indeed, it was often said that even if a person died, they would continue to live on within the people that remembered them, their hearts. Memories and feelings could be such powerful things, ensuring that the past didn't die. "Death, as cruel as it sounds is an inescapable ending to every life. Although, I believe that he is more happy to have died to protect the ones dear to him. My husband fought and died for what he believed in, although unlike him, Elise is somewhat different."
Mysterious words perhaps that she planned to clarify soon afterward. "Unlike her father who was a pharmacist, Elise is a hero in training, she will be much more prepared to deal with threats like this." Yet Touma's concern was understandable, those who gained strength, often became too confident. "With power comes great responsibility, I'm sure those responsibilities remind her to not become too confident. After all, the things Elise fight for, or not necessarily the same that soldiers in the army fought for? Certainly, they are similar in nature since both are conflicts, but I believe in her case she cares more about protecting someone, to save a person than to fight to kill. As long as Elise has someone to fight for, someone to save, I believe she will always act with the intention to return to their side."
Still, the last part made her recall something, and as she leaned back in her wheelchair Elise's mother mused softly. "I think this might be associated to something Elise mentioned to me before: Although they are learning to become heroes, conflict against villains is something they are unprepared for. In the end, most of their training involves exercises and things people might consider 'games'. She told me before, that she planned to ask you about it: To introduce actual combat experience to the education of the students."
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath as she continued. "I heard about the events at Semper Fi, of how she and Tetsuko encountered 'him'. In my opinion, it's a miracle they made it out of there alive."
Indeed, in Elise's opinion the school lacked something to provide its students with proper combat experience. "It is understandable, this is after all their first year, and they are still teenagers. But villains do not care about such things. Therefore, Touma-kun when she recovers, I'm sure she will approach you about this, but it is your duty, not just as her mentor but also as their principal to prepare them for that danger. At the very least I'm sure your school has quite a few feisty teenagers who would be more than willing to undergo a 'training from hell', as they call it among them nowadays?"
A soft chuckle escaped her lips as she leaned back and closed her eyes. "All we can do is guide them as well as we can, trust in our teachings, and their hearts to not lead them astray."
She paused for a moment and muttered softly. "Most might call me crazy for suggesting this so shortly after losing my husband, but I doubt Elise would let this be a reason for her to stop fighting for what she believes in, so I'd rather see her as prepared as possible for the hardships up ahead, than to try to shelter her from something which she will inevitably face one day..."
