I see you through the flood See you through the fire See you through the storms-a-raging
❧ Meet me at point A on mountain range for a challenge this day afternoon. Yoru was staring at the message for minutes not because he was weirded out by the content and the words, but because it was written on a piece of paper and dropped into his locker on school grounds. Who the hell challenges another person through a piece of paper at this day and age? First impression was that whoever wrote it was either old fashioned or plain ridiculous, and he didn’t know which one he preferred. Probably neither. There were so many things wrong that Yoru almost decided to ignore it entirely. It might have been a bluff or just a trap, who knows. But he didn’t remember any enemies he might have gained in U.A., and he was pretty sure if Maxi wanted to challenge him, that wouldn’t be through a piece of paper, but rather, somewhere where everyone could see them fight. He learned at least that much of his big-faced classmate. In conclusion, this was probably someone else. Mentally, he rolled through a roster of the students he knew, but couldn’t come up with anyone that might have done it. With a simple shrug, he pocketed the note, and went back to the dorm room to change. If this challenge turned into a fight, he would prefer not to burn his school uniform again. Staff would only let him get a replacement so many times in the course of a month, after all. So instead he pulled on a pair of comfortable, baggy black pants, a simple white t-shirt and a thin, orange hoodie to wear for the occasion. He didn’t care about the possibly chilly early November air, as his inner heater, his own quirk was working its wonders, keeping him warm even in slightly colder weather. His phone and wallet was slid into a buttoned pocket on his thigh, and he was ready to find the location specified. It wasn’t the first time he went to the mountain range, but he was fascinated by the wilderness every time he got here. The usual green had turned into yellow, orange and red from the fall season, perfect fit for his flames’ color. It was lifting his mood up, and the clean air was another thing that made him feel much better than being cooped up in his dorm room for the afternoon. The meeting point specified was a rather wide and open area with a few trees, fences and railings here and there. Under one of the trees, there was a wooden table and benches made of logs, as well as an empty ring made of bricks, in case a camper wanted to light a bonfire for a night out. As soon as he saw another person up on the mountain range, either if that person was waiting for him, or arrived after Yoru, he would pull up the little note he pocketed before, and wave it in the air. “Are you the one who made this? Who writes a challenge note on paper in 2072, seriously?”MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

What exactly was class 1-A there for in Eli's mind? Unlike Alex, he didn't view them as enemies. 1-A for Eli, were his proper rivals and while Alex had the right idea about surpassing them Eli needed to know the level that he was trying to reach. Therefore he decided to challenge one of Class 1-As students. Eli would still participate in Alex's training sessions, this was just somewhat of a stepping stone towards knowing where he needed to go. He already knew 1-As strength fairly well from two fights with Maxi, so he decided he needed a reference for their speed. He went with a kid named Yoru due to a suggestion from a kid he didn't care to figure out the name of. They also told him Yoru's locker number or at least gave him the defining detail, "You can't miss it! The doors edge is slightly melted!" Either this guy had major anger issues or not much control of his quirk. Either worked with Eli! Anger he could exploit as a rival and less control meant he would be easier to surpass!
Eli chose the location of the race to be the mountain range. He wanted to test speed and mobility, so a mountain range worked perfectly due to the objects they would have to go around! Plus afterwords he could go visit his uncle. His main objective wasn't to win though, he knew he was leagues behind 1-A for the most part. He wanted to at least be able to keep up with him, and he needed to know how far his goal was. He wouldn't underestimate 1-A, that's for sure.
He arrived at the open area of the mountain a little before Yoru...if they showed up at all and went to sit on one of the logs that were used by campers. What was the point of camping anymore anyways? Like if you were quirkless sure but for someone like Eli or Maxi they could just use their quirk to survive and if anyone called it cheating they obviously didn't know how to use their resources! Like if you have to survive why wouldn't you use your abilities that's stupid?
Eli's thought process was interrupted when a messy brown haired boy who Eli identified as Yoru based on the description he was given. He turned his head around to see the boy wearing an orange jacket that complemented his eyes while black pants gave his outfit an extra pop. Eli looked at his outfit as if it didn't complement anything compared to Yoru. A black shirt covered by a red hoodie with the word "Canada" on the front along with the country's leaf symbol from when he was a tourist there for a few days. Completing his outfit were his black shoes with red stripes and black pants. Bulky headphones adorned his neck and a black belt kept his pants from being too baggy.
As Yoru's words reached Eli's ears he stood up from his log seat, put his phone and wallet in his pocket, and replied, "You're correct, my names Eli from Class 1-C. Before you judge me on using a note instead of messaging you or something more modern, this was just easier. I didn't feel like going through the entire school just to figure out your phone number or anything. Locker number are more common information and notes are easy to slip into them. Second I'm not like Alex who thinks we're superior to y'all or anything because it helps boost my ego, I wanna see how far ahead 1-A is, so that's why i challenged you. Anyways my challenge to you is to race me to the base of the mountain, obviously we aren't supposed to use our quirks since we're in the city but once we get where no one can see us if you want to I'm not against it. My purpose in doing this challenge is for me to see the level of maneuverability and speed I need to reach. So, ready to show me what you got?" The blonde student grinned.

I see you through the flood See you through the fire See you through the storms-a-raging
❧ There he was, wondering what kind of person would challenge him with a vague note at all, when he was met with a completely unfamiliar face. Admittedly, Yoru was not exactly paying attention to people outside his circle of acquaintances, namely his classmates. He only met a handful of students from the other classes, like Chise from support studies, but one person stood out among them. An ugly monkey called Darren from class 1-C. He remembered the guy like anyone would remember a bad memory, and since that was his one and only experience with 1-C, he was usually expecting the worst from that class. Not to be prejudiced, of course, but one person among many could build an image already, negative or positive. That was a lesson while he was in a gang, and one member represented all of them. So when Eli introduced himself as a student from 1-C, Yoru expected calamity.
On top of all, it was his luck to meet with a guy that talked just too much. As Eli monologued, Yoru’s face was growing more and more unimpressed, almost comically judging the guy mid-sentence for not shutting up. “Ugh, what’s with the speech? You sound like some bad teach lecturing me. Take a breath, or something.” He scratched the side of his head, fingers digging into that messy brown hair as he listened. “You could’ve pinged me on the school chat, you know.” Because really, why bother with a note when all of the students were on the server, reading the chat and the school messages all the time? Admittedly, Yoru wasn’t chatting much, if at all, but he was always reading. Or, a bunch of his classmates would notify him of a challenge when they saw it. He was pretty sure that either Ryuusei, Jasmine, or Rin would tell him if someone was trying to reach him.
In any case, it was a done deal now. They were out on the range, and the guy named Eli already stated what the purpose of this meeting was. That much was at least pretty straightforward. He wasn’t exactly sure who this Alex was that he mentioned, not being well-versed on the members of other classes, but he already sounded like an asshole. He laced his arms in front of his chest, raising his head lightly as he was considering the rules of the challenge. He was emanating a calm confidence with the loose stance, but arrogance was far from his expression. He seemed interested, curious, taking the words seriously instead of mocking Eli as he did in response to his first words.
“Sure.” He replied with a shrug. “I am all about maneuver and speed.” Which was essentially true. He was a creature that lived to move, to roam free, to overcome any obstacle and run to his heart’s content. If anyone, he was the symbol of freedom. Turning his head toward the mountain, he looked at the gently ascending slope leading to the base. “I’m fine without my quirk, unless you aren’t. A second run could be with full power, after we see what we can do without weird abilities.”
Stepping on the middle of the dusty, worn road, he dug a line across it with his foot as a makeshift starting line. Waving Eli over, he assumed a loose starting stance, one leg two feet behind the other. Their goal was only vaguely mentioned as the “base of the mountain”, but Yoru decided to give a more exact finish line. “There is a small ranger shack at the end of the road, about half a kilometer away. That will be our goal.” He lowered his stance just a bit.
“Ready? Go!” Without waiting for an answer, just like how he did when he ran with Ryuu, he leaped forward, already using his top speed while they were on open area. Dust was kicked off the road in his wake, and when the road turned, Yoru continued going straight. The road itself was snaking around the range to curl against patches of the woods, but their goal was straight ahead. Since this was about maneuverability and speed, it was okay to cut through the wilderness instead of following the path. At the sides, the trees were scarcely spaced, but as they ventured further, more and more lone branches and still attached, overgrown roots would make their run harder. Yoru grabbed into low branches and jumped or hurled himself over lower ones, not stopping his run even for a minute, or let the obstacles slow him down. He would pay attention to the sounds from his running partner to try and figure out where exactly Eli was compared to him. He wouldn’t take his chance to actually look, considering a small mistake or distraction could cause an uncomfortable fall in the woods.

Talk about a different atmosphere. Eli's impression of 1-A thus far was that they were all nerds in some way. Yoru however, wasn't your typical 1-A student apparently! "Sorry, most of my experiences with 1-A students have been mostly informational and stuff, guess it rubbed off on me? Glad you like to get to the point though!" Eli said, relieved that there was someone in 1-A who spoke his language. This whole note thing was embarrassing! Eli couldn't really help it! He just forgot his phone at home that day and wanted to challenge him as soon as he could! "Okay I admit it! that isn't the entire truth. I left my phone at home today okay! I didn't wanna wait to see your skills though man! I'm impatient as hell!" Why did Eli feel so guilty about leaving his phone? It's not like it was the end of the world or anything.
Thankfully Yoru agreed to show off his skills and accept the challenge. Eli took off his jacket before they started the race, it may have been cold but Eli didn't want it to restrict him after all! Yoru suggested two rounds, one without quirk and one with. A pretty good idea in Eli's mind, "Yea I definitely don't need my quirk necessarily. It's useful but not necessary. So I'm good with none on the way down as long as you are." After Eli agreed, Yoru gave the duo a more specific destination, a small shack only half a kilometer away. Not too far, but plenty of distance to show their skills! "Yea that's fin-" Before Eli finished his sentence, Yoru began the race and dashed off! He totally stole Eli's starting privileges! A classic 1-A move.
Eli dashed off a few seconds after Yoru, taking note of how he moved so freely. He obviously showed a lot of experience and caution, but he also could improve in some aspects. If there was anything particularly bad about his movement, it would only be that he could be lighter on his feet. Compared to Eli though, this guy was an Elite! This was well worth the trip and loss that he most definitely would get. Dust kicked off of Eli's shoes as he began the race. He continued through, his main objective being to observe the other student. The only other objective of his was to try to somewhat copy his moves, as branches and trees came into view, he attempted to use one and jumped off of it. It cracked and fell to the ground as soon as he jumped off, so he didn't get near as much movement as Yoru, but it was enough to keep up with the speed demon if he continued to do it. He looked at Yoru's form while he ran, pretty much perfect for parkour. So that's how he was so fast! He had to practice parkour regularly. Eli would have to start practicing with him in order to get to his level or higher! After the race he would request personal training sessions!

I see you through the flood See you through the fire See you through the storms-a-raging
❧ Well, that sounded like a stupid reason to use old fashioned way of challenge instead of the chatroom, but Yoru just shrugged it off at this point. No need to fret over it more than necessary. “Will you stop with the explanations? It happened, I will get over it.” He also belatedly noticed he forgot to introduce himself to the guy while he gave his name, but he figured Eli must have been aware of it anyway. He had to ask around and found his locker after all, and his name was written on it pretty obviously as well. The melted door was always more noticeable though, so who knows.
In any case, a race was a race, and Yoru was always up for that. Quirk or no quirk, he was fine with both as well. His quirk didn’t exactly help him with speed, but it was certainly useful for maneuvers over difficult terrain. As for Eli, he had no idea what to expect from the boy, but after challenging him, he kind of expected abilities that had to do with speed. It seemed he was a little bit wrong.
He gained a head-start, but once he tried to glance back and see where Eli was, he didn’t find the 1-C boy right in his heels like he assumed, but just a slight bit behind. Unlike Darren, who prowled through an obstacle course with sheer force and endurance, Eli was lighter, and his movements seemed less sure, less practiced. If he had to compare the boy to someone, it would be Ryuusei. Yoru had the chance to run with Ryuu early in their school year, and the boy was admittedly a complete rookie in parkour. Although Ryuu was learning fast from watching Yoru hurdle above benches and railings, he still had much to learn. Eli seemed to be the same, and hopefully, he was also the kind that learned from experience rather than theory. Yoru was really bad at theories. He could do things, he can show how he does things, but he can’t explain.
No matter. He just had to run, because that was the point now. Looking strictly forward to see what was coming, Yoru picked up the pace, burning just enough of his energy reserves to stay at a comfortable distance from the hunter behind. Hurling himself over low branches and roots was as easy as getting through railings and steps in the city. Once the road outside turned, and they momentarily stepped on its surface again, Yoru kicked up dust and jumped back into the wilderness. Grabbing a branch he swung himself forward, and continued on after a smooth landing as if nothing could stand in his way. Fluid movements and swiftness were both an important aspect of parkour, and Yoru already had the jumping power as an extra to leave many parkourers in shame.
The shack designated as their goal was already in sight through the trees, only a bit ahead, and if Eli didn’t pick up the pace, he would come in second in this two-person race!
