| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ The evening was bright, the stars were even shown and that only made it colder. It was stupid to have worn a frilly pink dress. The whole idea of the party or parties or whatever what was going on the last couple of days, it seemed to be fun and everything but Rowan was actually done with it. She felt ridiculous, the pink dress she borrowed from some store and the blonde wig she found somewhere else and she didn't even remember, lately she had been going around without thinking properly to get the right things that she wanted. She had the Belle dress, but you could not wear the outfit twice because what if you bumped into someone you knew from that party. Very funny, she only talked to one person. The blonde wig was heavy and at least warm so that made it better but she could not wear a jacket over the pink frilly dress yet she wore a black leather jacket over it and a silver mask to hide her face.
She walked around, a bit uncertain, not many people knew who she represented as the story she used was already ages old, it was a shame. She took a glass of the red wine that they served, not knowing her to be the daughter of Sakamoto and not being able to guess her age, it was easy to grab something like that. She stared at the people dancing and swung a bit left and right with her hips, it would be fun to do so. There were a lot of people, dancing in the dark, children running around to play trick or treating. Rowan wasn't a fan of children and was glad to not be near them. She just wished there was someone to dance, some prince charming or something like that. She was always some sort of damsel in distress but standing here as Glinda the Good, did not make it any better. Elphaba would have been more fun, but she did not feel up for it to paint herself green.
She took a sip of the red wine and frowned, it was not good but it was okay. She hid the substance with her hand. Decided to drink a bit more before she was being pulled into the festivities, a group dance, and she hated and loved it at the same time. People went to find free people in the crowd, no matter how dressed. She did laugh a bit, ending up in the hands of someone else. |

Halloween. What an absolutely pointless excuse for a holiday. What the hell was it even celebrating? Nick had no idea. The pound shops must have absolutely bloody adored it, since they got to sell so many cheap costumes. He had seen the same crappy zombie masks and ghost hoods about twenty times already.
He certainly did not feel so negative towards Halloween at all because his dear Mother had barred him from ever taking part. No, definitely not, so why he had to repeatedly think this to himself he did not know.
Not helping his grouchy mood was the fact he could barely see where he was going. He was dressed as a dragon, naturally, being that dragons were among his most favourite things. The costume was as cheap as everyone else’s however; the tail was stiff and scraped along the ground behind him, the bright green colour of the suit was an eyesore and the dragon-head hood covering his face was frankly just goofy. He hated his life more and more with each passing second.
Where was he even going? He was damned if he knew. He had vaguely been following the sound of music, which had now grown quite loud. He glanced around from within his hood and realised he had walked straight into the middle of a group dance.
Crap. That was absolutely something he did not want to be part of. He hated groups and he had never been much of a dancer. Before he had chance to back off, however, someone ended up in his hands: as best he could tell it was a female figure in a frilly princess dress and blonde wig, her face obscured by a mask.
“Err, hello,” he said.
Christ, someone kill me now, he thought.
He knew he should not have tempted fate by mentally asking himself how things could possibly have gotten more awkward, but he did anyway.

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ Someone pushed her, not hurtful or anything bad but to take a step away from the group dance that they were performing, albeit she half hearty, but she ended up with a twist and a turn in someone else his arms. At least, she guessed it was a guy. Which was only confirmed after a hello. The Burning Lady would turn her head sideways, wondering if she recognized the voice but unsure and uncertain if she did the voice was from months ago, from ages ago, when things must be less important? No, it was not even certain if that was a statement to make but lots of things happened. Rowan changed, her hate had grown, her insecurity lessened and yet her flair for drama had stayed around. She still had not made up her mind if she dared to be a hero, not even with the conversation with Emi, not even sure if she liked that conversation, the conversation with Elise. Anyone really, she could use some help about clearing up her mind but the only one capable of doing that: was herself.
Maybe, just slightly, this was why she wore the Glinda costume. She would rather see herself in the role of Elphaba but making herself green was not her favourite part of the day and the effort and dirt that came with it was why she changed to something easier. The wig was horrible, her black hair would be better with Elphaba but she was more Glinda. Stupid, only looking for fame and best and in the end... although she wasn't someone's good friend. She was a nothing. Things were so easy going through her mind that she just caught the hello on time. She had dancing classes, she was not nervous but this was awkward. "Hello." She said very casually trying to catch a glimpse of eyes with the dragon mask. She looked better to see it, "I like your dragon costume." She said over the music that started and made them dance the slow dance that they seemed to perform. Perhaps they picked an easy one so everyone could join, Rowan had no idea, at least it made it easy on the slippers that she wore.
Dragons?
Nah that was ridiculous, the obsession should stop, The Burning Lady thought it had stopped but right now, she wasn't entirely sure. |

God, please just strike me down now. I’m serious. I’m done.
Nick’s mind scrambled desperately to come up with an excuse to get him the ever-loving hell out of there. He left the stove on. His cat was sick. He had a package to go pick up. Alas, in all the mind-numbing chaos of the party it was difficult for him to string together his thoughts enough to get that words out.
That, and something about this girl was familiar. Her voice was muffled by her mask, but he was sure he had heard it before somewhere. If only he could place where exactly. Sadly it was difficult to over the volume of the music and the chatter all around them. He found himself frustrated by this. If he did know her, then he wanted to know who the bloody hell she was, damn it. Which unfortunately probably meant hanging around the dance area.
“Err, thank you,” he replied to her compliment about his costume, which he knew damn well was just her being polite. No sane person would ever say anything even remotely nice about his stupid onesie.
He glanced up and down her own costume. “You’re, ah, some kind of princess, right?” A dragon dancing with a princess. How very appropriate.
Nick was no dancer. To him, a tango was a soft drink. He had quite literally zero idea what to do. He glanced at the people around them and tried to copy their movements, but his feet were clumsy and uncertain.

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ Her mind tried to give her so many signals but Rowan gave up on them. She made mistakes about guessing before and it was not her best attribute. She could give the compliment of his suit, it was funny to see, she wondered if it was very uncomfortable or perhaps just very warm to wear a onesie like that. Her dress was quite okay, it was still bad that she wore a leather jacket over it but that could happen, else she would have been very cold. The wig was more uncomfortable and she felt as if the mask was pushed very hard against her cheekbones. The good thing of all this was: she could be no one. No one that would know her, no one that would ask her: Sakamoto is that you? Rowan? No weird comments, texts or anything from her parents who wondered where she was or why she was out so late, no she managed very well right now.
"Something along those lines. Considering the movie, I don't know if you heard about the Wizard of Oz, she was Glinda, the Good Witch of the South but I just go with whatever." She smiled, who cared about titles, she would have guessed a princess herself as well when she first saw it, it made it nicer when she had seen the old movie, with sepia colours! That was fun. It was ages old anyway, more than a century! "Perhaps a princess suits me better anyway." She tried to say as a joke, but what was the joke about it if this person did not even know her. Damsel in distress, that's what she called herself.
Dancing to her came easy, she did have classes but nothing specific, it was more so she would not look stupid in case of balls and parties that her father was invited too and he would take her along, till she refused to come along. It was fun, for as long as it would take now, to dance with this dragon. She believed that she could ask his name, especially because for a second, she let her mind wander around.
The dancing, in a leather jacket and frilly dress, was a bit confusing, getting warm and yet feeling like she was floating. She would just see how long it would go on. |

Time seemed to be moving at a pace that made snails look like Formula One racecars. Nick wanted little more than to shrivel up into nothingness. Why could he not have been born with a teleportation Quirk? It would be perfect for getting the hell away from awkward situations such as this.
Adding to his already mountainous pile of embarrassment was the fact this girl, whoever she was, was a hell of a lot better at dancing than him. He tried his absolute best to keep up with her and mimic her movements, but his cheeks grew increasingly red with the effort. Suddenly he was grateful for his goofy dragon hood, for at least it hid the look on his face.
She proceeded to explain to him the origin of her costume, which was not a princess apparently, but some manner of witch.
“Oh,” he said. “I didn’t realise. I’ve, ah, never actually seen that film.”
He knew it to be a timeless classic in the eyes of most, but his dear Mother had never wanted him to waste his time with any film that was not pro-Quirk propaganda created by her group. He could quite easily imagine she would have described a film like the Wizard of Oz as ‘frivolous nonsense that will rot your brain’. Films that depicted all manners of horrific anti-Quirker violence - such as mutants with their extra features forcibly torn off - on the other hand, were perfectly fine and acceptable.
He shuddered involuntarily without quite knowing why.
“You gonna tell me your name at least?” he asked. He was eager to lead his thoughts elsewhere, and so went back to the matter of who exactly this girl was. Sometimes being as blunt as a bludgeon was the only way; he wanted to get out of there as fast as possible, and if he did know this girl, outright asking her who she was seemed the simplest way.

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ It was easy, a step to the right, step back, twirl and it would all be over and done soon. She wasn't entirely good at it, but she was sure better than a dragon in dancing. It looked so awkward that she found it funny but she dared not to laugh for the person in the suit, it might be entirely uncomfortable. She wondered if he would want to leave, that was no problem, perhaps she of all people should know that if you did feel uncomfortable in situations, you should leave.
Imagine waking up from a blackout by cops... Very nasty thing to happen. "That's okay, I bet most people prefer the new things." She decided to answer, she did not hear many about classical movies, she was on a spree to watch that when she was home alone with her cat, because well you needed to do something. She wasn't always happy about what kind of image those people displayed about well everyone, not only women and the whole idea about none-quirkers. How perfect that must be. Rowan did not want to think about it, the conflicting idea about her own track of thoughts and what she called the burning Lady. The whole event had not made it any better. "I liked the way they made it, but it is definitely not in my favourite list." Rowan tried to keep a conversation going, she wanted to ask him if he liked movies, but she had not seen many movies as she was more into books, "I prefer books over movies anyway." She made another twirl at the right beat of the music together with the other, none-leading partners. "Oops." She grinned as she had not said her name and he asked. Before all this, she might have considered it rude, if you wanted a name, you should give your own. Now it was all some sort of mystery that she was hiding in. Trying to find a version of herself that she could agree with. "Rowan. My name is Rowan." She had no idea if she knew this person, that made it part of the mystery that she was now thinking about. Weeks ago she would have been more insecure, wondering why and why not she would introduce herself. Now she did not care. She was Rowan and that was it. |

Whatever name Nick had been expecting her to answer him with, it had not been that. He was actually so caught off-guard his steps noticeably faltered for a second.
“Rowan?” he repeated.
It can’t be.
He could not believe the coincidence. Rowan was not exactly a common Japanese name, and of course, with her apparent love of reading and the fondness for dragons there was simply no one else it could be.
He almost wanted to tell her his true identity there and then, for reasons he did not really know. Perhaps because he thought of her as being somewhat like him, given their shared interests. Fortunately common sense caught up to him and reminded him how very ill-advised that would be. She had caught him stealing, after all. Even if she had let him go then, would she a second time? It was not worth the risk.
“That’s a nice name,” he said instead. “I take it you’re not local, then?” He tried his best to add a small chuckle that he hoped did not sound too forced.
Even if she was like him, he could not afford to risk anything.
“My name’s Sam,” he added after a moment. “I’m not local, either.”

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ No one had ever been so surprised by her name, or not that she ever cold remembered, he took a step wrong and she wondered if it had been because her name was familiar. She tried to find anything that would make her understand. All Rowan could do was nod when it was repeated as a question. Did she know this guy? Was she that pathetic for not knowing? Had she not learned enough from the panic and sheer means of action that she would have given up on that. She was for god sake Rowan and she had a quirk that was impressive enough. Burn.
That's all what the Burning Lady said, but she felt cautious as if she understood the same steps as Rowan did, perhaps even more, but she did not admit or say a word. It was, just her name. She nodded, "Well, half, I was born around here, outside Tokyo, my mother is from England, my father from here." She decided to say, what did it matter, even if there were not many other Rowan's in Tokyo, this guy did not know her last name was Sakamoto, not linking it to the industries, it was just a name. She did not know if she was disappointed or not but she believed it was a lie but she shook the loose ends of the wig away from her face and chin, not to say no to him. Liar!
But even if they did consider him a liar, what was that based on? On nothing. It was just a hesitation about a name, that could happen to everyone. "It is nice to meet you., Sam" She decided to say, for herself dropping the idea of the lie because it was not, it made perfect sense, especially if you expected someone local and yet such a name showed up. It happened more often than The Burning Lady should be shushed anyway. She smiled at him kindly, feeling still a bit strange in the pink ballgown, but she had felt worse in the yellow one days before. "Would you mind to get something to drink with me? I don't mind getting out of this crowd." She said with a laugh, she did not mind dancing, she also did not hate it but it had not been her intention to be grabbed and dragged in. Months ago she would loudly complain and ask people if they did not know her, now she had decided to not worry about it. |

Did she know Nick had lied about his identity? He could not tell, but his paranoia ate away at him. It was not helped by the fact he wanted to tell her who he actually was. Why? He had no idea in the slightest. Why did he want to talk to her more about trivial things such as dragons and books out there of all places? He was suddenly grateful for his ridiculous dragon costume, for at least it hid all of the emotions and thoughts he was experiencing.
He was genuinely interested to hear she had English heritage, however. So she too had a connection to England? She truly was like him...
“Ah, I’m from England myself!” he said, trying his best to keep a normal conversation going in order to maintain his cover. “I don’t miss the weather, I’ll tell you that much!” He added an awkward chuckle.
“A drink?” Before he could stop himself, he replied; “Yes, certainly; let’s go!”
What the hell was he doing? He did not know. He still did not know when his eyes wandered down her body and he mused on how much better she looked outside of her costume. He did prefer girls with darker hair, as it turned out. He mentally slapped himself out of thinking that.

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ She brushed another piece of the blonde wig away, it was getting annoying, itchy, warm, sweaty, oh god she was not getting sweaty right? That was gross! She would have to distract herself, get out of this crowd of thousand and get the wig off. As she looked shorty around to make sure they were back in the rhythm of the dance, she looked back at the eyes in the costume, "Oh, that's great!" She felt enthusiastic because he said so, this was a better conversation than she had with Maxi who seemed to be all too nasty thinking back about England. "I wish I could spend more time there, my grandmother still lives there, so we visit mostly during the holidays." She said exciting, maybe they could talk a bit about it, she could learn more about it, things she would be able to see and well, just the general vibe. She did feel sometimes that she belonged more in England than here in Japan but well you didn't change things like that. Besides if she wanted to continue U.A. she should also stay here. Her mother should leave her father though but again something she did not really influence. She giggled softly as he said he did not miss the weather, "I bet it is not that bad, I have been there before, there wasn't always rain." There was perhaps more rain and cold wind than here, but she would not mind that. "Why did you move? If you don't mind me asking, I mean I understand if it can be too personal." They just made, calm down Rowan. She blushed a bit as she felt shy for asking such a question.
She decided to ask him if he wanted to go for a drink. She smiled happily at him as he did seem to be happy about the idea. She took his hand, to take him to where she had seen the punch bowl. When they got there she first apologized because she wanted to take this wig off, for it was unpleasant. She quickly fixed that, having braided her dark hair and making it a knot, she took it all out, shook her head with her free hand and took the mask off. "Not so magical now." She joked, she was getting a bit better at those things, jokes in general. |

Her giggle was cute. It almost distracted Nick from answering her question about why he had come to Japan.
Crap, think of something quick!
“Ah, well, you know,” he hurriedly said. “I just wanted to see the world a bit. London’s nice and all, sure, but it’s always fun to experience different cultures.”
Her blush was cute, too. He thought of Rin and Nari; so many girls in his life, so little time. He just wanted all the affection and closeness he could get, with a very vague-to-nonexistent concept of what ‘restraint’ was.
It did not help at all that she took her wig off, then. He gawked, like a bloody idiot, only realising he was doing so when she passed a comment about no longer looking so magical.
“No no no, you look so much better like that!” Once again the words were out before he could stop them. “You’re beautiful. I want to…” He managed to catch himself just in time. Wanted to what? His throat was suddenly a hell of a lot more dry. “Err. Um.”
Stop babbling like a moron! You look so pathetic that way!
Except he had no idea whatsoever what to say instead.
...Oh, fuck it.
He leaned in close to her, almost to the point it looked like he as a dragon was trying to bite her head off. “Can you keep a secret?” he asked quietly. “It’s me, Nick.”

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ She looked up back at Sam, you know? She nodded when he answered her, that made a bit of sense. She would not mind seeing the world but strangely apart from going to England from time to time, she had not seen anything else. And England had only shown the tiny piece that was the surrounding areas of her grandmother's residence.
He is a liar.
Rowan ignored it, they still had nothing to say that he was a liar, he perhaps could not think well under pressure or something along those lines.
You are pathetic.
But she ignored that as well. "Well, good you had a costume for Halloween." She said with a little giggle before looking away, "Any more places you have seen?" She wanted to hear all or where he planned to go next. It felt like her world was so small, she had basically only stayed at the house and never gone anywhere specific but her grandmother and not even to her father's family that often. The beach, she had only been there once but there Kanna had made her feel as if she knew absolutely nothing. Which was basically true, all from a magazine.
Perhaps she was pathetic.
She took off her wig though, mainly because how annoying it was. It had been better when she was dressed as Belle, however, she wasn't sure if she wanted people to know her in her frilly pink Glinda dress. She stared at him with a silent o, surprised at what he said about how she looked, that is not what she had heard before, it was not that she looked nice or good enough, her mother said things like that, her father sometimes more comment that her clothing could do better but... "Want to?" She felt a warm feeling hit her cheeks and were almost sure they were bright red, right now. She had no idea what he would want to say, but she bit her lip softly as he moved closer to her, a secret? She actually had no time to answer, she only made a short nod and if she was already surprised, it was nothing compared what waved over her. Her eyes became bigger, pupils dilated out of surprise. "Nick," She said as soft as she could, helped that he stood so close to her.
So he was a liar.
She ignored the Burning Lady, "are you okay?" was only what she could ask, she did not remember their last meeting, the Burning Lady knew that but didn't share. She wanted to take action but did not because Rowan surprised her. How come asking how he was doing, did she not understand? |

Nick tried to take hold of her arms as he remained all too close without even realising, his grip tighter than a vice. “I’m fine.”
Was he? Not really at all. His head was a complete scrambled mess and he still felt oh so achingly lonely and lost with no idea whatsoever what he wanted to do with himself…
“Well, maybe I’ve been better. It doesn’t matter right now.” He chuckled genuinely now; a low, bitter and mirthless chuckle. “What matters here is you. Have you given any more thought to what we talked about the last time we met?”
Maybe he was pushing his luck, but much to his infinite relief she had yet to alert anyone to his presence, just as she had not the last time they had met. Perhaps he was safe with her after all. It felt oddly nice somehow. There were so very few people in his life he felt he could trust - though he remained uncertain deep down, having been raised to believe that no one could ever truly be fully trusted.
“It wasn’t that long ago, I know. But I’d still like to hope you’ve thought about our place in the world as Quirkers a bit.”

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ She had only eyes for him, staring up at him, picturing what he looked like without the costume at this point, which now she knew it was Nick only made her want to giggle more, when it first was fun and cute, it now felt ridiculous. "Nick, I..." She had no idea what to say, she wasn't sure why she said his name or why she talked about herself, because what the hell was it that she wanted. She just wanted to say his name, again and again, she wanted to touch the fluffy suit that he was wearing to make sure he really stood here at all. She bit her lip softly.
He called her beautiful.
She did not understand what he said after that. She frowned, clearly visible and looked at him with a questionable look in her eyes. "Thought about-" She felt as if she was throwing up and leaned forward. Almost too late. Rowan did not remember, of course, she did not remember, she took very good care of that. The Burning Lady still felt as if her stomach had just made a summersault.
She had not believed they would bump into Nick Cross so soon again but the thing was, he would know now, she was sure he wasn't that stupid, that ridiculous, She looked up at him, cautious, brushing a strain of hair behind her ear and leaning on the table. Ugh, she had no idea how she had done it but it sure made her feel like shit. "Oh that!" she exclaimed albeit not too loud but he must hear the difference in their voice, the look in her golden eyes if he dared to look. He called her beautiful but did he watch carefully.
She clenched her jaw shortly as she thought back, she owed him an answer, but she could not fully give an answer. "Nicolas, there are a few minor issues with what I think, compared to what you know." Shit... she called him Nicolas, while Rowan kept calling him Nick, twenty thousand times, man those thoughts were making her sick. She would have to explain but she would wait and look at him. "I don't think you would understand. I wish I could do more." It would be disappointing for the both of them, but they were two individuals with the same name, in the same body. And she still felt as if she would vomit, which was unladylike and disgusting in general. |
