Nick had needed to get out. That was what had brought him here, to the middle of a crowded mall on a bustling, sunny Saturday. Light streamed through the windows above as he emerged from a book shop carrying a bag laden with thick doorstoppers; enough reading to get him through the remainder of the year, he was certain.
He glanced around with a slight frown. The mall was not really his ideal choice for a place to go when not swamped in schoolwork. He did not like crowds, or people in general. He only chose it because the book shop there offered the widest selection for him. Yes, tablets and e-readers existed, which was why the book shop was one of the only left in the country, hell possibly all of Asia, but nothing beat a good old classic book, not in Nick’s eyes. Now, he was eager to escape the cacophony and retire to the peace and quiet of his dormitory and read the rest of the day away.
He was still smarting about not being voted class president, albeit the pain was starting to ebb ever so slowly. His classmates were fools and he was just going to have to accept it. Still, it was this that had caused him to feel suffocated around Yuuei and given him the need to get out for an hour or two. Now that he had he felt he was ready to return.
Whether he was ready to encounter one of his classmates was an entirely different matter.

The mall was crowded today. Sean could barely move around with all the people. Still, he didn't mind. It was the weekend, and he could use the time off to relax and buy stuff. He carried some bags filled with various things. Some water bottles, a few comic books, a new coffee mug for his mom, and some leftover sushi that he decided to take home to finish later.
He began thinking to himself. He still hasn't really talked to anyone from school. Sure, his main reason for being there was to learn and train to become a hero, but the hero's path didn't have to be a lonely one. Making a friend or several wouldn't hurt. After all, what's the point in having fun if there's no one to have fun with?
Sean then noticed someone familiar walking nearby. That guy....Sean didn't really remember his name, but the young man seemed familiar. Yeah, he saw him at school! Perhaps this guy will be the first friend from Yuuei he'll make. And even if not, it couldn't hurt to go over and have a quick chat, right?
Eagerly, Sean began to walk quickly in the student's direction while carefully trying to avoid bumping into the crowd. "Hey!" Sean yelled while waving one arm in the air.

Nick at first did not realise the call of ‘hey’ was directed at him, too focused on getting out of this godforsaken, people-infested hellhole. It only dawned on him that it was as he caught sight of the waving figure who stood out from the sea of faces simply because he recognised them.
Jesus Christ on a cracker. Thinking about his foolish classmates was apparently all it took to summon them.
He had not spoken to everyone in his class – pretty much no one aside from Rin and Jasmine, in fact – but he watched. He listened. This young man he knew to have some kind of water-based Quirk, though not how it worked or the extent of his power. Or his name, however the Quirk was the main thing on Nick’s mind. It would be idiotic to pass up an opportunity to learn more about him and his abilities, Nick knew even his current mood.
So, he stopped and allowed the other student to approach him.
“Hello,” he replied. “You’re from 1-A too, aren’t you? I’m Nick.”
He resisted a grimace, not at the other student but at their location. He really did despise crowds with every fibre of his being. If this other student was not going to leave him alone easily, then he was going to have to think of somewhere else for them to go, or at least find a quieter part of the mall.

Why did the crowd have to be so thick? It was difficult to reach the student, but at least he had decided to wait for Sean to reach him. Sean was very appreciative of this.
So his name is Nick, huh? Now Sean remembered that he was one of the people running for class president. He now felt a little guilty for not voting for Nick. To be fair though, Sean just picked his votes at random, seeing as he didn't know any of the people in his class. He decided not to talk about it unless Nick wanted to bring it up for some reason.
"It's nice to meet you, Nick! The name's Sean." He wondered what he and Nick should talk about. They could talk about school, or what their quirks were, what heroes they liked, and plenty of other stuff. The possibilities were endless!
Speaking of endless, Sean noticed the crowd of people getting larger. Was the mall always this busy during the weekend? As the crowd of people were getting closer and closer to the two of them, Sean decided to go somewhere less noisy. Sean was looking forward to starting a conversation, and he didn't feel like drowning in the sea of people. "Hey dude, we should find a place that's less crowded. Know any good spots?"

It was almost as though Sean had read Nick’s mind. Nick tried not to let his lack of enthusiasm for socialising show. He kept his expression neutral as he glanced around the increasingly full mall, attempting to think of where they could go.
“Well, it’s probably best we get out of here,” he said at last. “Never been fond of places like this. And I’ve got everything I came for.” He raised his bags to demonstrate. “I trust you have, too.”
He set off, forcing his way through the currents of bodies with little regard for the people in his way. He left the mall behind and emerged into the thankfully somewhat less overcrowded street. Now where? Well, if this other student truly did have a water-related Quirk, then the best place to go and test that would be somewhere with water.
He knew there to be a small park with a pond nearby, so he made for it. The park was nowhere near the scale of the Tokyo Park, being much calmer and more personal. There were few people around, a stark contrast to the mall. The few that were there kept to themselves, chatting and walking dogs. He glimpsed the pond only a few metres ahead with no one around it.
“Here’s fine,” he said, turning to Sean. He gestured to the pond. “I want to see what you can do. You have a water Quirk, that much I know. Let’s try not to overdo it and draw too much attention, though.”

It was a relief to see that Nick wanted to escape the overcrowded mall as well. Seeing as Sean didn't have anything else he needed to do in the mall, he followed Nick out the mall, sticking close to him to avoid losing him in the crowd. Once outside, Sean began wondering where they would go. As he and Nick continued to walk down the street, he noticed a small park. He hadn't visited this park before, but this seemed like a much nicer and quieter place to chat.
Sean then noticed the pond. So is this why Nick brought him here? To see his quirk? Nick's next words confirmed his suspicions. Sean had no problem with this. "Well if my quirk is what you wanna see, then I'm down for that! Watch this!"
Sean began to concentrate. As his quirk activated, that familiar cool feeling began to spread throughout his body. He then stuck his arm out towards the pond, hand open and fingers spread out. The water began to swirl and slowly rise, forming a small ball of water the size of his hand. Sean focused a bit more, then the ball began to slowly change shape. Sean focused and made the mass of water take the shape of a hand. This water hand then closed its fingers and pointed its thumb upwards.
Not wanting to show off too much, Sean deactivated his quirk, causing the floating water hand to fall back down into the pond with a small splash. "I can do more than just that, but like you said, I shouldn't draw too much attention." As his body slowly began to warm up a bit, he became curious as to what Nick's quirk was. He then grinned and looked at Nick. "So now that I've shown you mine, why don't you show me yours? What's your quirk like?"

Nick watched Sean demonstrate his Quirk with enough interest to make him forget all about the park and the risk of being caught. Sean may have purposefully held back the true scale of his power, but Nick got the gist of it. Sean could manipulate water using available sources, plain and simple. He made a mental note of how Sean had moved and how the water had responded to him. His mother and the rest of the Gifted Underground would be eager to know this, just as he had told them about Miku and her Quirk.
He was so wrapped up in his thoughts he almost missed Sean asking him about his own power, which resulted in him blinking for a second like a blithering idiot. “My Quirk?”
He almost asked how Sean had not seen it back during their rescue operations class, but then again he really did not want to reminisce about that. He had overdone it with his Quirk and let himself stagger out of there in a humiliatingly weakened state. With that in mind, perhaps it was a good thing if Sean had not paid any attention to him when he had left the building, because it hopefully meant the rest of his class would not have, either.
“It’s not exactly something I could show off in public. At least, not easily.” And how he lamented this fact. Damn the Quirkless and their suppression of Quirks. He wished so much to be able to revel in his other form and the power it awarded him whenever he wanted, but alas, he could not.
“It’s a transformation triggered by a growth on my back,” he continued. “I spawn a layer of biological armour that makes me stronger and faster. Definitely not a power to be messed with.” He could not help smirking as he added that.
The smirk wavered slightly as he noticed a pair of rough-looking men lumbering towards them from behind Sean. “You might want to turn around…”
Perhaps he would get to demonstrate his Quirk after all.

As Nick explained his quirk, Sean couldn't help but be amazed. It seems like a simple yet very handy quirk to have in combat. Nick definitely came off as the type of person who would be a brawler, so a quirk like that fits him well. It's a shame Nick couldn't show him his quirk in public. He felt bad that he didn't pay much attention back in class when he could have seen it in action. Sean decided to not space out in class anymore, before he misses out on any other cool things.
Suddenly, Sean was being told by Nick that he should turn around. As he did, Sean noticed these two guys approaching them. They didn't look friendly, but hey, looks could be deceiving. Maybe they just wanted to chat. Who knows? But if these two wanted trouble, Sean was ready to throw down. In truth, he was hoping to find a villain to take down. Could this be what he was waiting for?
Sean grinned and told the pair of men "Hey dudes! What's up?" If these guys were bad news, then maybe he would get to see Nick's quirk in action after all. And in turn, he could show Nick more of what he could do. He just hoped that nobody would have to get hurt.

Nick knew a threat when he saw one. The two dishevelled men lumbering towards them were clearly on something from how bloodshot their eyes were, the lack of cartilage between their noses and their rancid, rotten grimaces. Likely they came to this park to shoot up; it was quiet and out of the way. That and only someone high out of their mind would be stupid enough to attack two Quirk users in broad daylight, right after one of them had just demonstrated his Quirk involved using the body of water he was stood directly beside.
“Can we help you, gentlemen?” Nick asked with not a hint of friendliness.
“We saw that shit!” howled one of the addicts, pointing a withered finger at Sean.
“You goddamn mutant freaks!” barked the other. “You think you can just show off your stupid powers whenever you want, huh? You think you own the place?”
He did not even wait for an answer before he pulled a knife from the inside of his tattered jacket and came swinging. Nick hurriedly dived out of the way and not a moment too soon.
“School prohibits the use of our Quirks off the premises,” he called to Sean. “I don’t believe they have a problem with us using them in self-defence, however. Let’s send a message here!”
That message being do not even attempt it, Quirkless scum. The disc on his back bulged out and black, sludgy flesh spewed from its centre, consuming his body and solidifying into his terrifying armour. Watching the colour drain from the two addicts was beyond satisfying.
“Yes,” Nick declared as he ran for the nearest one, leaving the other for Sean. “You have fucked up!”

words: 405. tag: Nick Cross notes: Thugs just never stood a chance lol |
So much for these guys not wanting to pick a fight. From the looks of it, these guys were quirkless thugs who discriminated against those with quirks. Sean had seen and put up with people like this throughout his childhood. He didn't mind if people were afraid of those with quirks, but he would not stand seeing people attacking others just because they were different. Suddenly, one of them came at Nick with a knife, but he moved out of the way in time. Alright then, no more mister nice guy!
Sean knew that quirk use outside of school was prohibited, but using them in self-defense should be okay. As if Nick had read Sean's mind in that moment, he called out to him and suggested they send these thugs a message. Something black began covering Nick's body, forming some sort of armor. As Nick ran to one of the thugs, Sean couldn't help but admire how totally awesome his quirk looked. He could admire Nick's badass quirk later, though. Right now, it was time to fight!
Taking advantage of the thugs' hesitation and fear, Sean concentrated, and he lifted several liters of water from the pond and began compressing it to the size of a football. The thug who wasn't being attacked by Nick noticed this and he began to run towards Sean with knife in hand. Sean waited until the thug was close enough, and then he shot the pressurized water straight onto the thug's face. Smacked with the force of a punch, the thug was knocked down to the ground. Taking advantage of the thug being down, Sean kicked the knife lying near the thug's hand away from him.
Terrified, the thug began to call to his partner. "Hey, George! These freaks are your problem now! I'm outta here!" Sean could have just let him run away with a warning, but he could just find someone else to bother, hurt, or something worse. Sean decided not to take any chances, and he shot more pressurized water into the fleeing thug's face, knocking him out again. Sean summoned more water from the pond, surrounded the thug with it, pressurized the water, and formed a makeshift water rope to restrain the thug with. Sean then took out his phone to call the police. He hoped that they wouldn't take too long to arrive. Sean then looked at Nick to see how he was doing.

Nick, meanwhile, seized the other worthless scumbag by the collar with one hand and curled the other into a fist. Wham. He punched him square in the middle of the face and let go at the same time. The sheer force of his blow sent the man reeling back and he stumbled onto his ass.
Nick approached him slowly and menacingly, relishing in the raw power that emanated from him, eager to show it off and leave this piece of shit in a state he would never forget. No – he stopped. He had to remember not to go overboard. If he seriously injured this man even in self-defence then he put his future at Yuuei in jeopardy, which would mean failing the mission the Gifted Underground had set him.
Nick’s hesitation gave the thug time to scramble back onto his shaky feet, right as the other thug began to ditch him.
“Damn it, Daichi!” he snarled at his fleeing companion, though his voice contained more fear than anger. “You can’t leave me with these monsters!”
Nick’s shadow fell over him. He turned to face Nick with wide eyes and his lower jaw began to quiver.
“You made a mistake and you know it,” Nick said.
The much more cowardly thug did not resist as Nick wrestled him to the ground. Nick maintained his hold on him, but allowed his armour to revert back to its sludgy state and recede into the disc on his back, which shrank again.
“Hurry up and use your water to tie this guy,” he instructed Sean. “Ugh, this is going to be fun to explain to the authorities.”
He had gotten something good out of this, though: he had seen more of Sean’s power in action. He had even more juicy information for the Gifted Underground now. So, perhaps this had not been a waste of time at all.

Watching Nick easily subdue the other thug, Sean was seriously impressed. He believed that Nick could easily take out five thugs by himself no problem. He could hear the other thug, whose name was apparently Daichi, struggling to break free from the water rope, but he wasn't worried. This thug was simply wasting both his time and energy trying to break free. As soon as Nick had told Sean to bind the other thug as well, Sean had summoned more water from the pond, ensnaring George as well. Sean was hoping that the police would arrive soon. He didn't want to get too cold and lose his concentration, letting the thugs free.
Thankfully, Sean didn't have to wait long. About ten minutes later, a police car had arrived. After explaining to the officers what had happened, they proceeded to handcuff the two thugs. As one of the officers took them to the car, the other one thanked the two heroes for their fine work. Sean couldn't help but grin, and told the officer "It was our pleasure helping to keep the streets clean!" As he saw the police car drive away, he activated his quirk, and returned the water back to the pond. He was glad Nick had chosen this place for the two of them to hang out. This was a day he wouldn't forget!
Speaking of forgetting, Sean had almost forgotten about the stuff he bought at the mall. He needed to get this stuff home! "I gotta head on home now. It's been a pleasure meeting and fighting with ya, Nick. See ya at school!" After shaking Nick's hand, Sean walked out of the park with his stuff. As Sean walked down the street and headed to his house, he couldn't help but wonder how many other cool people from school he would get to meet. He didn't know what Nick thought of him, but Sean had already decided that Nick was a cool guy. He hoped that they would get to hang out again soon!
