I was told it would be okay to swap this combat ability for another combat ability that did the same thing, so doing that with upgrade! Should be 200XP for F to E! ProgressionCombat Armor
Upgrading From: Shadow Armor Type: Enhancement Rank: F Effect: Currently, Shadow Armor creates a suit of armor made of solidified shadow that increases Alex’s durability based on the amount of shadows in the area. Unfortunately, due to the concentration needed to maintain his shadow armor at his current stage of Quirk control, it also prevents him from using his powers for anything else for as long as he maintains the armor around himself.
For this ability to achieve full effectiveness, concentration must be maintained. If Alex can see an attack coming, he can harden one specific part of his armor at the expense of other parts to deflect more damage. If concentration is broken for any reason, the armor can dissipate as quickly as it was created. Alex can also be faked out to reinforce the wrong part of his armor, leaving a vulnerability somewhere else. The hardness of the material is like wood, but shifting around the shadows makes it so that there is more density of shadow in the location and thus more wood to punch through if he is being attacked. Effectively what it does is make a thin plate of shadow armor a thick plate of shadow armor for as long as he chooses to redirect the shadow, at the expense of leaving openings elsewhere since he only has so much weight to work with when it comes to his quirk.
Upgrading to: Type: Enhancement Rank: E Effect: Currently, Alex has jury-rigged a 'hero suit' based mostly off of protective motorcycle gear with enhanced synthetic plates underneath the material to toughen it up against both cutting attacks as well as high impact bludgeoning attacks. Fabric rated against heat was sloppily added to the armor in addition to the padding changes to try and get some resistance to heat and flames as well. The entire thing looks like some idiot cut open a perfectly good and protective motorcycle outfit and sloppily stitched the entire thing back together, which is exactly what happened.
The hardness of the armor is rated at stone, and due to intense combat training even without the armor this ability functions as a toughness ability one ability rank lower than his armor. (In this case, Alex with the armor has E rank durability but without the armor he has F rank durability.)

1100 XP in the hole for a quirk upgrade from E to C. ProgressionShadow Construction
Upgrading From: Shadow Construction Type: Emitter Rank: E Effect: Shadow construction enables Alex to solidify and shape the existing shadow around him into various shapes, densities, and hardness levels. The user of this ability does not have to be in physical contact with shadow, just to be aware of its presence and reach out with this power to manipulate it. This normally means that Alex must see the shadow before manipulating it, but if allowed to survey the area beforehand it means he can take advantage of that preparation.
Once shadows are manipulated, they stay changed until changed back with conscious effort or the shadow used to create them is destroyed, even momentarily. This facet of his powers is often used to create traps and other ways to maintain a distance from an opponent. Physical obstacles meant to trip enemies up like knee-high blocks of matter or ankle high blobs of sludge can provide the distraction needed for a recovery or a finishing attack.
In mechanical terms, he can manipulate shadows extremely quickly, being able to go from normal shadow to construct in less than five seconds. He can manipulate shadows approximately up to 10 meters away from himself, and can only create up to fifty pounds total of shadow at one time, which includes his shadow armor ability. The maximum hardness of material that he can make is equivalent to wood, but he can also manipulate shadow to be softer like sludge.
Drawback: Shadow construction does not allow Alex to create shadow, only to manipulate currently existing shadow. If the shadow that was used to create something is removed, so does the construct. Extended use leaves user fatigued and lowers body temperature. Additionally, the more shadow that Alex manipulates with this ability, the less fine control he has over the movements of each construct.
Alex must also be aware that shadow exists and where it is located for him to manipulate it, which generally means either visual contact or memorizing where the shadow is. In the event that he cannot see any shadow to manipulate and can only remember it, it is possible for him to be distracted or simply misremember where the shadow was due to any number of factors including time passing and the sun changing directions – and the shadows following it or a new light source being introduced to the environment.
Upgrading to: Type: Quirk Rank: C Effect: Type: Emitter Rank: C Effect: Shadow construction enables Alex to solidify and shape existing shadow around him to a range that is slightly longer than a short course Olympic swimming pool by ‘ripping’ it and creating matter from the base of the shadow. The user of this ability does not have to be in physical contact with shadow, just to be aware of its presence and consciously reach out with this power to manipulate it. This normally means that Alex must see the shadow before manipulating it, but if allowed to survey the area beforehand it means he can take advantage of that preparation by reaching out and ‘ripping’ shadows he knows exist.
Once areas of shadows are ripped, the matter pulled from them originates at the exact location of the shadow and must be telepathically moved from there. Once a shadow is ripped, the matter will stay there unless Alex walks out of range, the original shadow is destroyed, or someone actively destroys the construct.
In mechanical terms, he uses already existing shadow to create solid constructs with the maximum hardness of iron, but he can manipulate the texture and hardness to be like goo just as easily as he can make an iron strength sword. He can manipulate shadows approximately up slightly more than a short course Olympic swimming pool away from himself and can only create up to one hundred pounds total of shadow at one time.
Drawback: Shadow construction does not allow Alex to create shadow, only to manipulate currently existing shadow. If the shadow that was used to create something is removed, even momentarily, so does the construct. Extended use leaves user fatigued and as well as lowers body temperature.
Alex must also be aware that shadow exists and where it is located for him to manipulate it, which generally means either visual contact or memorizing where the shadow is. If he cannot see any shadow to manipulate and is forced to rely on memory, it is possible for him to be distracted or simply misremember where the shadow was due to any number of factors including time passing and the sun changing directions, or a new light source being introduced to the environment.
Shadow construction is also a very focus-intensive quirk, since so much of it relies on direct concentration. Anything from a sneeze to an unexpected attack from behind can break concentration, which often has the quirk react in erratic ways such as dramatically reducing the accuracy or power or an attack or making the quirk outright fizzle out in the case of severe distractions.

400 XP for an armor upgrade from E to D. ProgressionCombat Armor
Upgrading From:Combat Armor Type: Enhancement Rank: E Effect: Currently, Alex has jury-rigged a 'hero suit' based mostly off of protective motorcycle gear with enhanced synthetic plates underneath the material to toughen it up against both cutting attacks as well as high impact bludgeoning attacks. The suit itself is grey, white, and blue and definitely stylistically made to look like an animal -- in this case, a wolf especially for the helmet and boots. While the outer plates make the armor look like one solid mass, in reality is layered with many different materials beneath those plates in order to try and ward against as many damage types as possible. This layering is not perfect, which results in the relative weakness of the armor in comparison to the materials used to create it. The hardness of the armor is rated at bronze, and due to intense combat training even without the armor this ability functions as a toughness ability one ability rank lower than his armor. (In this case, Alex with the armor has D rank durability, but without the armor he has E rank durability.) |

4 F-ranked abilities means 400 XP goes down the hole! ProgressionBlind
Upgrading From: N/A New ability
Upgrading to: Type: Combat Ability Rank: F Effect: Alex’s quirk, shadow construction, now emits a small bit of a wet, ooze-like substance. If this substance enters the blood stream or makes contact with the eyes of anyone, it induces the ‘blindness’ condition for one post. This manifests in a combination of blurry vision and nearsightedness, with there being very little effect up until a five meter range until the blurriness starts to take effect until about fifteen meters where the world seems to consist entirely of blobs with increasing severity until then.

ProgressionEnhanced Stamina
Upgrading From: N/A New ability
Upgrading to: Type: Combat Ability Rank: F Effect: Months of hard training and constant physical exertion have allowed Alex to have noticeably increased energy reserves when compared to a normal person. His motor in a fight could be compared to a journeyman professional boxer who could on a good day go the full twelve rounds in a fight.

ProgressionQuirk Martial Arts
Upgrading From: New ability
Upgrading to: Type: Combat Ability Rank: F Effect: Alexander’s quirk allows him to take long range fights with impunity, but his close quarters prowess was always significantly worse. Through extensive training at both the Semper Fi military event and with other students such as Darren who excel at hand to hand combat the American had developed an ability to use his quirk in close quarters much more effectively so that at a fight that reached hand to hand was not the automatic loss that it signified in the past.
His skill could be compared to a lower tier professional fighter, but the offensive part of that fighting is entirely based around his quirk. What has really developed is his ability to time attacks coming in and attacks coming out fast enough to be useful in a close quarters situation. It has also made the hero candidate develop instincts useful for a fight, allowing him to both move and at least attempt to dodge incoming attacks while using his quirk simultaneously in a manner that was simply impossible for him before.

ProgressionWoodcrafting/Carpentry
Upgrading From: New Ability
Upgrading to: Type: Mundane Ability Rank: F Effect: Alex’s time developing the initial skill in Arts Club as well as honing it significantly in the process of creating the many structures used within the Hero Operations Club have advanced his ability to construct buildings and artistic pieces with wood to a standard that would be considered professional but not particularly exceptional.

Upgrading durability combat ability from rank D to rank C, with a total of 700XP down the drain. After cashing in 2EP, I should have a little over 800XP. I'm spending 700 of it here which should leave me with 117 left. ProgressionCombat Armor
Upgrading From:Combat Armor Type: Enhancement Rank: D Effect: Due to cooperation with the Support Studies class after the Semper Fi Event, Alex has been able to upgrade his previous jury rigged hero suit into something a bit more professional. (In this case, Alex with the armor has D rank durability, but without the armor he has E rank durability.) Upgrading to:Type: Enhancement Rank: C Effect: Due to cooperation with the Support Studies class after the Semper Fi Event, Alex has been able to upgrade his previous hero suits with something that many might even consider state-of-the-art in terms of its ability to handily deflect and absorb punishment from many quirks as well as traditional weapons. The suit itself is grey, white, and blue and definitely stylistically made to look like an animal -- in this case, a wolf especially for the helmet and boots. The armor's outer shell is composed of a multi-layer alloy with the hardness and durability of iron that is augmented with a refractive coating able to disperse a limited amount of heat-based attacks and prevent the entire suit from simply absorbing it. The next layer in the armor is a thick, black armored body suit designed largely to catch piercing attacks that may penetrate the outer shell before they reach any vital areas. The back end of this body suit consists of a gel layer that controls temperature and can re-actively change its density. In other words, the gel layer protects against bludgeoning attacks by absorbing force that may otherwise smash bones as well as providing limited protection from temperature based attacks in addition to the refractive coating on the outside. It also acts as a limited conductivity zone, preventing the brunt of most electrical strikes from bypassing the durability provided by the armor layers themselves. In this new world where a pro hero is expected to be able to combat any villainous quirk, this suit is the top of the line when it comes to its versatility in handling many different types of threats. The hardness of the armor is rated at iron, and due to intense combat training and months of being absolutely thrashed with various implements such as rulers, riding crops, and other dangerous objects by his hellish homeroom teacher even without the armor this ability functions as a toughness ability one ability rank lower than his armor. (In this case, Alex with the armor has C rank durability, but without the armor he has D rank durability.) |

New F rank burn ability for 100XP. ProgressionFrostbite
Upgrading From: N/A New ability
Upgrading to: Type: Combat Ability Rank: F Effect: Using his quirk has always decreased Alexander's body temperature when used, but he has finally figured out how to export that freezing cold shadow in a way that benefits him. As a conscious action, he can manipulate the temperature of his quirk so that the constructs that he makes become so cold that they cause injury to tissue characterized by freezing and necrosis. This frostbite inflicts the 'burn' condition and thus deals tissue damage over time equivalent to the rank of the ability in total over the course of two posts from the victim. This tissue damage, at current rank is minor and only effects approximately an inch of flesh in total.

REPLACING EARLIER BLINDNESS ABILITY ProgressionHypothermia
Upgrading From: N/A New ability
Upgrading to: Type: Combat Ability Rank: F Effect: At the same time that Alex chills his shadow to use his Frostbite ability, a thin layer of thick liquid coats the shadow construct in question. This thick liquid, once it enters the bloodstream, inflicts the 'fever' ailment on the target. At Hypothermia's current rank, the liquid is strong enough to cause a mild sensation of discomfort for three posts. This effect lowers the offensive capability of the target by a marginal amount. Once the 'fever' condition is removed in any way, it cannot be reapplied for three posts.

PERSONALITY Alex has undergone quite the change over the course of his first semester at U.A. and his involvement in the JSDF Revolt. After seeing combat, the façade of confidence that he projected so hard ceased to be a consistent thing. The fact of the matter was, he didn’t need to play pretend as to whether he deserved his rank or whether he was comfortable in his own skin anymore. He had proved himself when shit hit the fan and the American is no longer afraid that he won’t measure up as a hero due to being paralyzed by fear.
His negative aspects did not go away, however, due to his increased self-confidence. Vendettas are still on the menu, and Alex has a mental catalogue of all the wrongs that he perceives being inflicted upon him. When an opportunity arises to get revenge, big or small, he isn’t above taking it and letting his pettiness get the better of him. His complete lack of deference to authority he perceives as illegitimate, as well, has not changed. Titles provide the benefit of the doubt, at best, and if the actions of someone in authority is perceived to be beyond those bounds… well, he’ll voice his displeasure and his lack of respect quite plainly and receive detention and other disciplinary action.
Tone and presentation, to be frank, are not the American’s strong suits. He comes off as intense, abrasive, and egocentric when confrontation is done. None of these are false observations, but it also doesn’t tell the whole story. Countless hours and late nights were spent in the construction of the Hero Ops Club facilities, for example, for the betterment of the school. Countless more hours and late nights were spent training to the point of physical failure after studies concluded and taking late night runs to center himself. In terms of positive traits, he is much more in the ‘show not tell’ camp and would rail against accolades he felt he hadn’t earned. Once he does earn them, he has zero issue gloating about it to his heart’s content… but until then? Never.
Because his Quirk requires so much attention, Alex turns noticeably quieter and noticeably more measured and precise in his movements when he uses it. Before and after a fight, he has zero issue trash talking with the best of them to set as many eyes on a big matchup as possible. Once it starts, however, the silence is normally going to be absolute. The more he talks during a fight, the less he respects the other person as a general rule. Doing more things at once means more potential for mistakes, and in a high danger situation that gamble is simply not worth it. [/div][div style="font-family:Roboto;font-family:15px;color:#313131;text-align:center;padding:5px;"]APPEARANCE[/div][div style="font-family:tahoma;font-size:10px;text-align:justify;color:#313131;overflow:auto;height:150px;padding-right:3px;"]HEIGHT: 1.8m WEIGHT: 72.5kg HAIR/STYLE: Short, brown hair that is rarely maintained outside of special occasions. Alex is only slightly taller than average, but he does have a muscular body and an almost omnipresent cocky grin that permeates his features much more often than not. His red eyes are oftentimes said to be distant and cold, but he certainly doesn't normally intend to give off that aura. His usual projected confidence goes into his general stance, too, with his posture generally impeccable and his clothing when in professional settings absolutely immaculate. Alex is a firm believer in looking good to feel good, so his clothing choices whenever possible are on the dressier side in order to do this... but his current level of wealth and his expensive tastes do not exactly overlap, so he must live with what he has for now.

He left the tarot card of Death as a calling card, which the media had a field day with until coverage of the murders was suppressed for national security purposes when the authorities found the true culprit.
He was a terrorist who believed in the supremacy of strength and that a new age of humanity was to begin, with the strong rising up and claiming power of the inferior normal humans. To speed along the process, he was determined to murder the most prominent anti-Quirker politicians in his state but was only moderately successful before he met his end. He was also a man of a fiery temper, as the scar on Alex’s face can attest to when he was a bit too loud and needy as a child and went for Dad to fix something at the wrong time. Out of paranoia about having things recorded about him by the local government, Alexander was pulled from public school in the middle of the third grade and was officially in homeschool for the rest of his time in America. In truth, his mother did her level best but simply was not cut out to be a teacher to a student who wasn’t all that intelligent to begin with.
Alex never found out what happened to his father, other than the fact that he died violently in battle. It was most likely a vigilante who killed him, but he would likely never know for certain. The details of the encounter were never made public, and the boy and his mother were moved across the world long before this final confrontation anyway. The boy had his quirk identified late, but once it was identified he was sent away for reasons that Alex still isn’t sure of. He knew there was a purpose to him moving to Japan, but he was never quite sure because his mother was arrested due to connections to the Black Death’s crimes before she ever told him – if she ever knew in the first place. He moved to Japan with his mother in late 2069, and his mother was arrested by authorities by June of 2070.
From June of 2070 until his admittance into UA in June of 2072, he was in the foster care system of Japan. Most of the money that he once had access to was confiscated by authorities, so he had nothing left save for a hand-me-down ability from a serial killer and a very modest bank account that could buy him a month or two of life when he aged out of the system. The fact that the Black Death had a son was not public knowledge, so it is a fact that Alex has kept very close to his chest for his entire life for the fear of it ruining his chance at making something of himself. The information about being an orphan in the koseki, or family registry system, was enough to get him discriminated against in any job market to begin with. He already had one large black mark on his record, and the last thing he needed was two before he even got a chance to start.
Living at the orphanage was far from a pleasant experience, and indeed until the end of December in 2071 he was in an underfunded government facility for wards of the state. Being a foreigner with no grasp of the language, he was a prime bullying target for the ‘throw away children’ that consisted of most of his house. The main caretaker was anything but sympathetic and was quick to deliver beatings when the American was perceived to be troublemaking or being a nuisance… which unfortunately for Alex was pretty often. He was also beaten for being seen as refusing to answer questions in schooling, which was almost all the time due to the complete lack of Japanese or formal education experience he had when he was first shoved into that orphanage.
By January of 2072 he made it to his first foster home, but was returned to the orphanage by the end of the month due to ‘conflicts with school’ which basically meant that he had gotten into a fight and proved himself to be a delinquent in the eyes of the foster family in that time span. He would get another chance in mid-May, where a family was willing to take the chance on the boy but again grew quickly disillusioned with his delinquency and seeming inability to adapt to Japanese society.
Luckily for him, however, his new foster family was much more willing to talk out the issue and see if there was a better place for him than back in the orphanage. He had a very strong quirk, of that they were fully aware, and suggested enrolling in a hero school. It was an idea Alex had never considered, but quickly latched onto as his ‘way out’. It would get him out of their house and also on his way to being a productive member of society, so they could pat themselves on the back and say they made a difference in the world.
Alex’s entrance into U.A. had more to do with written tests and psychological evaluations than most, because his quirk was so obviously useful. He had to prove he knew Japanese well enough to be in classes where it was the only language spoken, and prove he was not a threat to other students despite his discipline record at previous public schools. His Japanese wasn’t perfect, but full immersion in the language for a couple years did wonders for his ability to understand even if his speaking was with a noticeable accent.
His original idea for a hero name, Rebellion, at the surface level is a choice that plays off of his often times irreverent nature and at times dubious relationship to authority. In truth, it is a constant reminder to break away from the past that he can't change and strive towards a better tomorrow. The sun will always rise again, and destroy the darkness that night brings. The darkness in Alex's past and lineage cannot be erased, but it can start anew and mean something entirely different by the time he is done.
He is brash, yes. Irreverent, sure. Antagonistic, absolutely.
What Alexander’s first semester at U.A. proved, however, was that despite or perhaps because of these traits he could absolutely thrive in the school environment. His academics fought with the bottom of the class, but in hero related courses like combat or rescue he was consistently top of the table. Not only that, but he had been recognized by his peers by being voted Vice President in a highly contested election in a display of the bonds he was able to make in such a short span of time.
While he had many traits that marked him clearly as a delinquent, he also had traits that were perfectly suited for the profession of heroism and displayed them enough for his peers to take notice. His instantaneous decision making, initiative that led him to taking charge while most would hesitate, and the unwavering confidence to stand up and do his best even when the odds were stacked against him. In the first official student rankings, he was featured as the Number 5 student based on perceived potential as a hero at Yuuei High that circulated around the school and to parties privy to the internal communications of U.A. Top five out of three filled up hero classes and a support class to boot was vindication for a student who would have otherwise been back at the orphanage with no hope for a better life if things had gone even slightly differently.
At the Semper Fi military camp, Alex was definitely one of the U.A. students who received the most attention in the aftermath. A failed rebellion among the anti-quirkers in the military happened while the public and many students were within the walls of the event, and heavy fighting broke out. Alex, Yojin, Chimera, and Risaka all happened to be at the Armory at the time and managed to save the lives of quite a few people. They also managed to disable an enemy tank and neutralize at least a dozen hostile combatants, and the American was the first and only one to chat up the media afterwards with the zeal of someone who thought that having a good public image was a critical part of being a hero. They had ridden out of the event on a literal tank, so it was only natural that they got a bit of media attention with an entrance that cool.

Two hundred experience. ProgressionFrostbite
Upgrading From:Type: Combat Ability Rank: F Effect: Using his quirk has always decreased Alexander's body temperature when used, but he has finally figured out how to export that freezing cold shadow in a way that benefits him.
