A blade wasn’t something to underestimate.
Though perhaps not possessing the same ease of use as a firearm, it was still a weapon designed for the express purpose of doing harm. It was designed to pierce, to cut, to slice, to rend, to bleed… It was designed to debilitate and kill, and when sufficiently sharpened, could do so without trouble. Even in the hands of someone unskilled, it could achieve this with enough force applied in the right direction. And in the hands of someone proficient in the art of the blade, well… That was what made the difference between a knife being a tool and a weapon.
The man before Tetsuko was certainly wielding it as the latter. The soldier’s stance was firm, leaned forward with his foam weapon extended forth to manage the distance. His feet were no more than a shoulder’s width apart, an optimal position to put his weight into his strikes, or quickly dodge an incoming attack. At present, the man was strafing Tetsuko, she was doing the same in her more upright and traditional stance, wielding her practice tanto. Her body was kept side on, one hand rested against her side while the other held her tanto out in front, poised and ready.
Like serpents they coiled around the small, circular sparring ring, waiting for the other to finally strike…
It was the soldier who lunged forward first, thrusting his knife’s tip for Tetsuko’s neck. Her tanto raised with a flash, deflecting his blade as she quickly counter-slashed at his torso, the soldier deftly dodging and continuing a brief dance of blades as they tried to cut one another, foam weapons clashing and slashing as they pieced together one another's styles, at the same time looking for a vulnerable point to make their move, until finally, Tetsuko saw her opening.
As the man flicked his wrist downward, aiming a debilitating cut at Tetsuko’s arm, she reacted with unusual agility, retracting her arm pulling it back to throw her upper body into a rapid momentum, shifting the tanto knife in her hand into an ice-pick grip as she pivoted on her own feet, her stance rotating her body as she quickly thrust the blade at the side of the solider’s neck. He raised his knife to block as he stepped back, managing to avoid the tanto, but only for another moment as Tetsuko quickly twisted her wrist around to hit the man’s wrist with her foam blade. A blow that, in real combat, would leave his hand useless and knife dropped.
“Well, not bad at all, missy. That’s your win.”
The older soldier would say with a contented look. Tetsuko and the soldier would shake hands and thank one another for the sparring match, one of many that the Shindou girl had had in the past few days. She’d made the most of the special military camp when it came to advancing her own combat ability, as although almost all of the armed forces there surpassed her in hand-to-hand combat, she found more than a few worthy foes in the art of knife-fighting, not terribly different from swords.
Tetsuko would step outside the sparring circle, snatching up a water bottle to refresh herself before her next bout. Nowadays, she was willing to take up just about anyone who was interested in a friendly spar, given how populated the military camp could be. It wasn’t as though Tetsuko was the kind to pick a fight, she simply appreciated the practical experience that sparring gave, as well as the natural thrill that facing many opponents provided. The Shindou girl would seat herself near the sparring rings, wondering if any who’d seen that little bout might be interested in testing themselves against Tetsuko, perhaps even with fewer restrictions, given how… Limited much of the military could be.
After all, they didn’t usually have any Quirks to use, so Tetsuko hadn’t had much chance to test her own. Regardless, Tetsuko would look forward to whatever next spar came her way, like a traveling ronin seeking out the thrill of their next duel, to test their strength and hone their edge, as any good swordsman should strive to do!

Julen had visited the combat area again after his spar with kasey and he was feeling better, feeling the bitter sting of letting her land so many hits on him still echoed through his mind. He wondered if she was still there so that he could speak to her and learn some things from her to improve. He walked over to the area they were in previously and didnt spot her at all. "Well this was a waste of time.." he muttered to himself as he lit a cigarette and decided to watch the current fight with a young girl and a soldier from the military. He was already here so he decided to just stick around and see the outcome of the fight.
He watched her fight for some time, he took notice that she was very skilled with a sword for her age. Oooo the soldier made a rookie mistake, ".. dumb-ass left himself wide open for her to counter attac-" he said to himself as she then proceeded to do exactly what he knew she would do, the veteran soldier became her prey as soon as he moved from the spot he was at. Julen took note of the girl's characteristics, she looked like she was on the younger side but nowadays you cant trust looks because of mutation quirks and good ol fashioned plastic surgery that can help reverse some of the effects of aging. In one fell swoop she man handled the veteran soldiers pretty easily. In julen's imagination she was a snake hiding inside of a young budding woman's body and he was the old prey that made a fatal mistake of entering her den to challenge her. In the end he was her meal because of his gross miscalculation and she had one the fight in one fell swoop. "If that man's a veteran it's a wonder that this country hasn't been invaded by some other foreign party.." he said whispering his comment under his breath because he wasnt an idiot as to say something like that out loud. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small silver flask, the nurse had told him to not drink while he was injured but screw her, what does a license professional know about alcohol? He took a swig of some Dack Janiels
He saw that she had walked off of the sparring area and decided for lack of his better judgment to chug the rest of the whiskey in his flask. he wasn't drunk, but totally stupid ideas like challenging the snake in her den to a fight seemed like a great idea, even if he lost he would be ok with getting some experience from her. "Oi, kid you up for another fight?" he asked curiously "I want to fight the snake in that girl's clothes." he said out loud to her "If you want we could also use our quirks, it will be fun to see what kind of quirk you got in combination with that fighting style. What was that? Jikishinkage-ryū?" he asked curiously, he loved anything with violence so he did occasionally watch some videos of people fighting with this style but he was by NO means an expert in the subject.

For better or worse, Tetsuko found her next spar, in the form of a young man who smelled faintly of alcohol. Turning to him with discerning eyes, the Shindou girl wasn’t sure if that’s what she could smell, but supposed it wouldn’t be entirely out of place within this camp. Though there were many teenagers there, that wasn’t to say some adults weren’t also in attendance.
He inquired whether she was up for another fight, referring to her as the ‘snake’ in a girl’s clothes. She raised a brow at the metaphor not entirely sure what he was implying, but not going so far as to presume it was immediately derogatory. ”I’m no snake, just a swordswoman. But yes, I’m more than ready for another spar.” Tetsuko wasn’t exactly picky when it came to sparring partners, even if this man was slightly off-putting. As a Hero, she wouldn’t always be fighting against the most honourable of people, so it made sense to pit herself against a variety of different opponents.
This upcoming spar became even more interesting as the man suggested the use of Quirks, to which Tetsuko looked immediately intrigued. Her curiosity only grew when he mentioned her sword style, apparently recognizing it. It was a rare thing to see it recognized, at least, when considering the general public, who didn’t typically know much about kenjutsu.
”That’s right, I’m a practitioner of Kashima Shinden Jikishinkage-ryū.” The young girl said with absolute pride as she gave a short bow and introduced herself. ”My name is Tetsuko Shindou, and I’d be happy to spar with Quirks. I could always use more practice against other Quirkers.” She admitted, stepping back toward the sparring ring and approaching one end, wordlessly indicating for Julen to follow. As long as the proper formalities were had, there was no need to delay. Once she was standing across from Julen, the young girl set her feet back into stance, looking at him with determination and readiness.
”Is there anything more you’d like to specify first?” Was his final chance to make any changes or clarifications in the rule of their little spar, as was only fair. Tetsuko wasn’t picky with her sparring partners, after all, nor their preferences, so she didn’t mind what the terms of their spar was, so long as Julen was willing to give it his all and test her skills. Such was the mindset of any noble duelist!

'Ah, crap that came out wrong' he said realizing his statement could be taken wrong. "Im sorry, I did not mean to imply that you are a snake in a negative sense." he said beginning to explain himself "I find them, elegant, strong, swift. Thing such as that so I meant to pay it as a compliment." he said smiling to her, his smile was extremely warm. This girl was VERY different from that monster he fought earlier, she was something else, a beast that managed to scare even him.
"Ah I see! I knew it looked familiar, im quite a fan of that style, I never learned it myself however. JH at your service my dear." He said giving a polite bow to her as well, despite being younger then him he had tremendous respect for her immediately upon seeing how well disciplined she was unlike the majority of children her age and the riff raff from U.A. Much to his delight she had agreed to spar with him. "I will be using my quirk but keep in mind it will not kill you, if it hits you and becomes to much for you let me know and I will stop immediately. Aside from that not much else but to get started then" he said as a fair warning to her, he was not going to hold back for if he did he would surely lose this fight and he would have learned nothing making it pointless
"Im going to let you have the first move. Now come at me with everything you have." he said as he moved back a little and put his palms together and bowed, to her as a sign of respect. But it was also the position he took to activate his quirk, the lines on his body began to glow red and a white light began to illuminate from his palms, as he pulled his hands apart a ball of light formed and began to meld it's self into a scythe that was as tall as he was. He stood in place watching her very closely to see how she'd come at him.

With narrowed eyes, Tetsuko listened as Julen assured he meant no insult with his comment, going as far as to compliment her. A natural sense of paranoia, or rather caution, had the swordswoman wondering if he was toying with her, but brushed it aside. No reason to be so disrespectful as to think of her sparring partner that way, and his warmth seemed genuine enough. ”In that case, I’ll thank you for your compliments. I don’t knee if I agree with your view on snakes, but I’m glad I could mimic their strength and speed.” She said a bit awkwardly, unsure how to take the compliment as always. Snakes were not something Tetsuko had ever imagined her own fighting style being similar too, serpents had such an air of cunning and trickery… And a natural inclination towards evil in many cultures. Perhaps she’d have been a bit less wary of the comment if it were a prouder beast, but that was hardly relevant.
Her opinion on this stranger continued to shift towards a positive light as he mentioned his like of her sword style. A certain prideful half-smile appeared on the Shindou girl’s expression, so easily giving in to the flattery and mutual interest of the man who called himself JH. An odd way to call oneself, she initially thought, though realised it was probably a nickname of some sort. Initials or something like that. Appreciating his bow in return, Tetsuko was starting to get over the initial off-putting aura the man had initially had to her. Perhaps he was merely enthusiastic, a bit eccentric even.
They began to lay down the rules of the spar, in a manner, mentioning he intended to use his Quirk. He also felt the need to specify it wouldn’t kill her. She should he hope he wouldn’t intend to spill her blood in a spar, but perhaps there was more to his words that she’d come to realize. His vagueness was likely to avoid revealing too much about his powers, something she fully understood. ”I see. I’ll not worry about shedding blood then.” Tetsuko said softly, still feeling a bit uncertain, though that was really her natural state nowadays.
He allowed her the first strike, asking that she didn’t hold back. ”The same to you. Spare no effort.” She said, almost grinning in anticipation. As Tetsuko slid her back foot into stance, she watched Julen activate his Quirk, harnessing a strange illumination that took solid form in a ball of light between his palms. With a curious gaze, Tetsuko witnessed him create his weapon, a large and wicked scythe.
A polearm wielder… Though a scythe is a unique beast…[/color]
Scythes were a peculiar polearm. Possessing the reach and handling of a spear, but with more focus on their cutting edge and ability pierce with that deadly point. Focusing the energy in such a manner that one could pivot their weight into some brutal armour-rending techniques. The weapon, however, was not also without its weaknesses and vulnerabilities.
”Here I come.” Tetsuko would utter sternly, putting her weight back in stance as she held her hand at her hip. Facing outward, iron pierced through its centre, a rusty reddish hue at first before it shaped itself into the hilt of a katana. Grasping it with her other hand, Tetsuko would continue releasing iron as she drew out the weapon, appearing as though she was pulling the sword from her own hand. The result was a single katana of shining iron, possessing a blade approximately two shaku – or 60 centimetres – in length.
Without delay, Tetsuko sprung forward, her feet lower and steady, as she raised the sword into an overhead offensive stance, the hilt in line with her forehead. If she got in range without trouble, she’d swing the sword down quickly, a head-on attack aiming to try and fluster Julen with sudden brute force. It was mostly a testing move, one to weed out any information she might be able to use as their fight surely escalated.

It seemed like she shared his ideal of not holding back against someone, he saw that this was going to be a valuable learning experience. She wasted no time in coming at him full force, he liked that, however he was worried about her quirk, her saw a reddish hue forming from her skin, oh fuck did she manipulate blood?! ANOTHER BIOLOGICAL WEAPON QUIRK? god damn it they were everywhere! Wait,it was changing still? damn it Julen was not going to have time think about it, he needed to move. He got into a defensive stance ready to block the sword coming at him.
He saw her swing her "sword" at him with an over head strike, the move was a simple one but he was going to take it head on to see if he could test her over all strength. He moved his scythe so that both hands would grab onto the pole and he'd place it to crash into her Katana, hopefully blocking it in time. "So, tell me about yourself, what's your quirk do?" he asked trying to stall a bit or distract her. Ok so the weapon wasn't organic...but it lived in her body, what was this material? Iron? He also was able to experience the speed she could move at, she was very agile and seemed to be stronger then most people her age, however she was not stronger than julen, he was taller and more built then she was. However nothing else was really new that he had not seen from her fight with the soldier. The red head knew he couldn't give her time to breath or else he'd meet the same fate as her previous opponent, He quickly yanked the pole as hard as he could to his left side. He wanted to catch her blade with his, it was a simple test to see who's material would crack under pressure, if he could break her weapons then he'd had an advantage in this fight. At the very least he could attempt to disarm her to see if he could.

Her testing strike yielded interesting results, as the scythe-wielder proceeded to block it like one typically would with a polearm, using the length of his weapon's shaft to take the brunt of the blade. An effective enough block, as contrary to what some people might believe, it was not at all easy to cut through the shaft of a polearm. Quickly sliding her blade back, Tetsuko quickly withdrew in preparation for a follow-up attack, only to receive a rather easy to answer question.
"It's my body's iron, I wield it like you see before you." Was Tetsuko's simple explanation of her Quirk. Truthfully, there was plenty of other bits and pieces that she'd have to add to give a full picture of all its weaknesses and strengths, but that was the general gist of it. "And yours?" Tetsuko inquired, though her question was punctuated by a glance at the male's weapon, distracting her briefly and unnecessarily, allowing Julen's disarming attack to catch her off guard. One of the benefits of a scythe that she hadn't even considered was just how unpredictable and versatile it was in the right hands. As although something like a halberd might be more practical, few people were trained to handle a weapon that was typically used as a mere farming implement. Using it much like the hooking blade of an axe or war pick, Julen would yank Tetsuko's sword from her guard, pulling it down and away from her and leaving her terribly open. Although her weapon found itself on par with Julen's in terms of strength, the fact of the matter was that Tetsuko was put in an uncomfortable and straining position by this move, her grip loosening and the threat of a disarm becoming evident.
However, there was a silver lining, as by hooking away her blade to the left side, Julen had unintentionally opened up his right. Tetsuko just had to be quicker than he on a follow-up attack! Removing one hand from her sword's grip, Tetsuko pulled it back with the momentum of the attempted disarm, leaving her wide open for a brief moment. In this moment, however, Tetsuko would throw her free hand forward toward Julen's collar, a blunt blade of iron erupting from her palm as she tried to strike at his collarbone, aiming to force him back and potentially weaken his arm. However, the chance did exist that he would simply take the attack, in which case Tetsuko really did have to hope she could respond to his own in time!
