Ah, the beautiful rising sun in the distance. As the birds chirp their usual songs, as the beads of fresh morning dew gently slide off of the leaves to feed the animals below, as the sun itself seemed to rise and greet everything that lives, one guy was enjoying fucking none of it, actually. Maximillian was up early, indoors, avoiding the sun and the outdoors for he had much bigger things to care about other than actually sleeping or enjoying his morning. Silly shit, obviously! He had a lot to train if he wanted to catch up to the "four greats" he had been hearing about.
Turns out, from what he has heard from several students, it turns out that the popularity poll only showed just how "public" the fame of these students were. There were two people, one obvious to Maximillian and one coming as a complete surprise that were part of these "greats". Jasmine, Rin, Darren and YUMI. Indeed, Yumi. The one he always assumed was always more focused on friendship and having fun than fighting was actually on par with monsters like Darren or Rin -- a lesson that he learned today, to always remind himself to never assume he knows everything about a person. If Yumi, the one he wasn't assuming much from, was one of the strongest students in the school, then anything was possible. It also meant he had a lot of fuckin' catching up to do if he was trying to go for #1 on the next popularity poll.
For that reason and that reason alone, he had decided to not sleep at all: even during the hours where the camp was closed, he had been hard at work the whole night, studying several books about battles and war. Among all of them, the message tended to be pretty common, always called the greatest factor between a victory and a defeat -- experience. --
Maximillian didn't have experience. So he had to change that.
Not knowing how exactly other than sparring with other students, which obviously meant he'd have to go interact with other people than the small social circle he had gotten used to already, he was willing to do anything that wasn't within his comfort zone, if it meant getting stronger... there was one problem though, one that a lot of people might miss. Who the fuck would be at the military base at the high hours of morning, when they have just opened the camp for the day?

'The early bird gets the worm.'
It was an almost universal adage, existing across countless cultures and languages in various different forms, all roughly translating to mean the same thing. A simple message, wake early and claim the bulk of the day right away. Albeit, a message that Tetsuko Shindou had always taken to heart, resultant of an upbringing that had her placing diligence and consistency above all else. Whether it be dietary concerns, sleep schedules, or simple persistence in her training, Tetsuko rarely wavered in this heavily ingrained sense of diligence that had her rising early to train as soon as she could.
It was something of a difficult and delicate process, slipping out of Elise's cuddle in the morning, though occasionally the other girl was rising just as easily. Particularly nowadays, when the Germanic lass was eager to get up and out in the military festival, keen on experiencing all the fun and firearms on offer. On this specific day, it seemed she was off to witness some demonstration of an experimental rifle, while Tetsuko opted out in favor of getting in a bit more training of the physical kind, specifically with sparring in the combat quarters. Between the soldiers present and like-minded students, there was no shortage of worthy opponents for the young swordswoman to pit herself against, to test and hone herself, to become strong as she needed to be.
Indeed, there were a number of factors propelling Tetsuko forward in her training, most of them revolving around others. The dignity and pride of her family she was sworn to uphold, her desire to be strong enough to protect Elise from any harm that might come to her, the want for strength, enough to cut down any villain that dared to stand against her and her ideals of righteousness. With the fervor of a zealot, Tetsuko marched forward, to slice through her weakness and any obstacle between her and that pinnacle of her abilities, that immovable heart.
However, on this particular day, it seemed that there might be a bit of an impediment to this training. Though she was ready as ever, having donned her usual short-sleeved tracksuit, Tetsuko found that there were very few who within the combat quarters at this early hour, let alone many who seemed to be keen on a spar while they were still warming up. A shame, really, but Tetsuko would have been content to just train alone and hone her techniques if need be. Fortunately, it didn't seem like she'd have to do that, as she soon spotted a blue-haired boy also within the area, looking like he was searching for something. A spar, perhaps.
"Hey." Tetsuko would call out flatly. She was usually a somewhat social girl, but it took a bit to break out of her initial reservations. So for now, as she approached the blue-haired foreigner, she wore a somewhat impassive expression, wary of him for whatever reason. He looked somewhat familiar, like a face that might have passed by in the past. "You a student too? Or just here to sightsee?" The young girl inquired, a fair question she thought, considering how young he looked. And it wasn't terribly often that a teenager just strolled into a military camp, after all.

Oh, and do the stars align!~ Who else but someone he actually recognized, though seemed to not recognize him? He had seen her before, several times actually! This violently cute girl armed with a strong, sharp stare and obvious waryness of him was none other than dear Elise's girlfriend, Tetsuko! Man, she really seemed so much different than when together with Elise, huh? Whenever she was with Elise and he'd happen to catch a glimpse of them, he always saw them happy and adorably chummy with each other, a sight that somehow always awakened just the pure, innocent joy in seeing love flourish for someone who you have seen suffer so deeply before.
Elise had suffered. He knew this. That night in the music hall still left a very sour taste on his tongue, both from how much of a shitshow it became so quickly, from how much suffering he saw in the faces of everyone, from how angry he got at realizing that within the students, there was one villain worse than many out there, that there was someone whom he had never realized that she was so deeply perverse. Ever since that night, where he saw Elise run away in heart-breaking tears, he had wanted her to be happy again, he wanted her pain to stop.
Fucking hell though, the speed in which said happiness came was actually surprising, almost surreal. In less than half a week she had already gotten together with a new girl that, apparently, had been her crush her entire life. From all that he observed and picked up in several different conversations and things he himself saw, she supposedly spent most of her life really liking Tetsuko, got drunk on QED once, got all over Rin and said that she loved her and, just because Rin said that she loved her too, instead of being smart about it and think it may have just been platonic like so many times people say "I love you" to others, she instead went fully in on the relationship -- he was partially guilty of this, for encouraging her. In his defense, he didn't know all the details. -- and got completely heart-crushed when Jasmine rudely shunned her, kissed her "crush" in front of her and announced her love for her.
When she had been burned like that then, magically so, she returned to Tetsuko and, whatever happened in between them, he had no idea. Had she bawled her eyes out and begged for forgiveness? Had she been calm the entire time with Tetsuko and explained her situation like an adult? Maybe both? Maybe none. What he did know was that they got together incredibly quickly, quickly enough to send some red alarms on him.
Not that it mattered, he wasn't into Elise and it was extremely likely she wasn't into him either, they were just friends. Though the fact that they were friends never mattered when it came to criticism.
Now, how does all of this weigh in on the way he saw Tetsuko? Not at all really, if anything, he saw it as a positive. Just the fact that her presence and love was enough to soothe Elise was already admirable by itself, specially if Tetsuko knew of Elise's short-lived crush for Rin and, even then, took her in and loved her all the same. Now knowing that she was there, possibly about to spar with him brought so much excitement to his heart, he couldn't even explain it! "I'm the dumb pervert of the school that is somehow Elise's friend. Maximillian, at your service. Maybe not. Don't ask me to do things that aren't fighting right now." Why hide the pervert asshole in him? From what little he knew, Tetsuko disliked him already from the chat, so might as well feed her sour attitude towards him even more, so that they might get a proper fight!

As far as first impressions go, it wasn't exactly the best. Though he had been only vaguely familiar to Tetsuko, it seemed he quite easily recognized her, so casually and quickly responding to her greeting as though they were supposed to know one another. Raising an eyebrow at his introduction as a 'dumb pervert', Tetsuko only grew more wary of the lad until he connected himself as Elise's friend. Though Tetsuko wasn't normally the kind to find shameless perverts all that pleasant, she supposed that was likely one thing this blue-haired boy had in common with Elise. And with Elise, her perversion was... A special case for the swordswoman. Perhaps it was simply the matter of mutual attraction in that case, who knew. The point was, open perverts weren't typically the kind of people she got along with.
It wasn't until a few moments after he dropped his name that Tetsuko made the connection on who exactly this was. 'Maxi' as she'd heard him referred was someone who she'd only seen prop up a few times, mostly within the UA group chat, but had never thought much of him beyond that he was somewhat... Childish. The other place in her memories that name resonated from was that night. The one Tetsuko had heard every detail about, including his actions, of which... She didn't exactly approve. That night was a stupid mess, however, and something Tetsuko wanted very much to leave in the past, so although she didn't exactly like Maxi on the outset, she wasn't about to start picking a fight or anything. After all, he did have a single redeeming quality she knew of. He was Elise's friend.
Although Tetsuko wasn't exactly looking to pick a fight so to speak, it did seem she was being offered one. Given what she had been seeking out in the first place, it was definitely a tempting offer, and in spite of her opinions she had little reason not to accept. "And if I asked you to fight?" She replied with a head tilted quizzically. "You seem to know who am already, but let me introduce myself. I'm Tetsuko Shindou, and if you really want a spar, I'd be happy to oblige." Not exactly the most formal or dignified of meetings, with Tetsuko not even bothering to bow on a rare occasion, but given the casual demeanor of this young lad such a thing would have only seemed awkward. All she was interested in was whether or not he truly wanted to clash against her, and if so, if her opinion might approve of him during such a spar.

From the looks of it, the recognition was really one-sided, even after he completely introduced himself. Fuck it, the way she looked at him once he talked, he might have guessed that it just made her like him even less. Ah well, see if he cared about other's opinions at this point. He had gotten through so much shit lately, with all sorts of assholes judging him that he really couldn't ever BRING himself to care anymore. If she was to judge him for being honest with what he likes and following life the way he wishes to follow it, that's her problem -- he wasn't about to change for someone else that wasn't worth it.
That might be kinda mean to say or think, but it was the truth. If he was Elise yes, of course, he'd probably change some bad habits and stuff about himself, to better adapt and have a happy, loving and nurturing relationship, but HE'S NOT ELISE. He doesn't have tits and he has a penis! Therefore, ultimate proof he ain't Elise! He's Maximillian, icey pervert who likes girl's breasts, boy's firm butts and cute faces and by god he'd die to uphold his belief and live life the way he desires it!
"Alright then. Come -- face me."
Maximillian challenged her, making this clear by moving his hands a bit, his fingers simply swinging through the air forward, a "command" to the six flying ice blades behind him. Maximillian had no idea how Tetsuko fought, what she used to fight or even her quirk. He was in the dark on everything about her and, therefore, he should play it safe for now: His swords divided themselves into three separate pairs, blades crossed to make a "X", slightly circling his front as to not leave any side open, showing that he was prepared to defend from anything she might throw at him; well, he hoped.
It wasn't like she was some sort of Rin or Jasmine in terms of power, was she?

In spite of his internal lamentations of judgement, Maximilian seemed quite ready to accept a spar, Tetsuko nodding quietly in acknowledgement as she stepped over to assume position and let him draw whatever weapon he had. His challenge was brushed aside, nothing different to the usual showboating Tetsuko had witnessed in her time at the military camp. This was a spar, not a duel, no stakes or honor up for destruction or bolstering, so she took at as simple competition more than anything else. They would clash and learn, if he was more than he seemed at first glance.
Ice appeared to be at the core of his Quirk, creating icy blades that seemed to follow his will. Six of them, to be exact, an almost excessive amount in her view, though his control over them was yet to be seen. Perhaps she really was fortunate enough to find herself facing another swordsman, though personal experience had implied to her that the chance was statistically low. The Shindou girl watched with keen eyes and growing interest as he brought his blades into a defensive position, by establishing them in 'X' positions. The swordswoman sighed, evidently, he was not a swordsman. The 'X' block seen in fantasy was not a thing at all, and for good reason.
Wordlessly, she decided it was only fair to show off her own Quirk, or at the very least reveal it to some degree. Holding out her hands to the side, she decided to humor the idea of wielding multiple blades in her own, less extreme way. From either one of her hands, iron sprouted from the palm, cutting through her skin and shaping into a blade in each hand. These blades were quite clearly Japanese in design, however, they were different from the most commonly known katana. The curvature was different, resembling that of the much earlier tachi, not that anyone unknowing would notice. They were also shorter, each being about one and a half shaku in length, or around 45 centimeters.
She'd briefly bow her head to acknowledge the beginning of the spar, before wasting no time darting forward toward the ice wielding lad. Her blades were held either side, her footwork and handling of the swords already showing as she quickly pivoted her right blade in her hand, bringing it around her body and overhead at Maximilian in a skillful strike that aimed to cut overhead, right down the middle of one of his 'X' blocks. The thing about this ineffective formation was that, aside from looks, it was impractical; any decent swordsman could just pivot their blade on the cross of this X and bypass the defense, not to mention the fact that without any kind of link the blocking blades would only be pushed against one another, often sliding down and rendering it ineffective. However, this was only from what she knew about fighting regular swordsmen, and Tetsuko was quite curious to see how Maxi might respond to her strike, her other blade defensively held at her midsection to respond.

Status Report, from Brain.exe: "This position is fucking shit, yo"
That was the first status report that Mr. Brain gave Maximillian the moment he first clashed the first set of blades against her own, having it been shown to him when he saw one of her blades simply slide down from his defensive X with almost no effort, the boy knowing that it could have easily slashed him should he have not had the reflexes to slide back with his own quirk, to get away from her dangerous blade made out of an alloy he couldn't identify yet and, probably, wouldn't have to identify.
The blades followed him hastily to always stay close by, while Maximillian began considering and pondering everything he had seen thus far, in just their small clash. Some conclusions could easily be drawn from this, such as:
- Tetsuko is clearly a better swordsman than him when it comes to technique and equal to him when it comes to power.
- He seems to have the range superiority so, should the need arise, he can use the rest of his arsenal of techniques to win.
- The X position is fucking shit, yo.
Yes, very good conclusions from Mr. Brain right there, indeed! Maximillian would have to fight more with intuition and ingenuity instead of trying to clash pure, raw technical skill if he wanted a victory here, one which was likely should he keep witholding the scope of his abilities from her, as well have to find a new defensive position to make sure something retarded like that pivot wouldn't happen again.
Words wanted to come out of his mouth, though none decided to actually let themselves be heard and, instead, just remained calm and collected in the fight, seeming to honor a desire for a proper spar from her. Yes, this was all a spar, there was no need to hurt yourself for a meaningless victory. Face the spar as a learning oppurtunity and not as an excuse for violence. Maximillian quietly walked towards her while moving his arms around almost randomly, were it not for the blades that seemed to react to his commands.
They separated themselves completely, now fighting independently and not in doubles, Maxi having decided to have them encircle Tetsuko's position. If this was a fight of only blades, then he'd use his blades as best he could. A lil' swish from his finger in a circular motion and two of the blades began to move, circular as well, rapidly picking up speed to dangerous levels, turning them now into weaponized frisbees. They were the first two to dash directly at her, from the right and left as to intentionally be parriable by each of her swords. Meanwhile, a third blade would be quick to attempt a simple horizontal slash at her right thigh, Maximillian desiring to see how she'd react.
He wasn't on the offensive yet, he was getting info.

Her blade didn't quite hit its mark, not that Tetsuko had expected to land a clean hit right off the bat. She merely wanted to see how the boy would respond to the attack, and she got just that, as he slid backwards and remained seemingly on the defensive, his blades close by. Tetsuko couldn't help but let out a light sigh, thinking already his fighting style might not be too dissimilar from some of the other emitters she had faced, such as Alexander Derraine. That was to say, he was going to use his range advantage every chance he had, trying to substitute skill for sheer power and trickery. She'd have to be as cautious and unyielding as she had been in that fight.
At the very least, Tetsuko could say Maximilian was less talkative during a fight than some of the others she'd encountered. He took this properly, good. Nothing more than a test of skill and experience, lessons both would have to learn. Maximilian was soon approaching Tetsuko again, commanding his blades without the need to touch them. Quite the advantage, Tetsuko thought, though it was something that could not be without its limits. No quantity of blades would surpass quality, even Musashi himself didn't wield multiple weapons of the same length, and for good reason.
He began using his range advantage, as she had very well expected, and targeted her legs with one of the three blades he directed. So this was the same too then? It was a running theme that the ranged opponents Tetsuko faced tried to impede her ability to move, evidently unwilling to face her in her optimal range. No matter, Tetsuko already had to devise a countermeasure once before, and she could do it again. Iron sprouted from her upper thighs, small plate rising from it that quickly flattened across to provide capable armor. It was more iron of her already limited supply, but given how conservative she was when using her resource it didn't matter too much.
The other two blades were simply parried aside with relative ease, as Maximilian had intended. What she did next, however, was her own response to his ranged swords, by showing off her own. That was, she took the kodachi in her right hand and promptly flung it blade-first at Maximilian. She was going to discard it anyway, after all, as it was becoming clear that two kodachi were not the right tool against this less skilled opponent. Her hand still gripping the other sword, it quickly began to grow as more iron flowed into it, drawing upon Tetsuko's supply to a high degree. The result, a long bladed sword, with a hilt almost the same size. The polearm and nodachi hybrid, the nagamaki.
Her opponent was not used to swords. This was clear. Yet, he'd decided to experiment with them, so she would do the same and experiment with this blade she rarely used. Holding it in both hands firmly, she'd give a slight nod to Maximilian, a request of sorts. That simple motion asked only one thing. Bring on more swords.

Aww, I want to see the end of this duel. Me thinks a rematch is required!
