| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ It was beyond Rowan why she was here for another day. She was not even dressed properly for a military visit, she had decided she wanted to just see things and no longer decided to dive in and do, probably the worst idea she had. She was wearing a plaid dress, fitting her narrowly and making her stand out in a crowd that was dressed to do rescue missions, paintball and combat training. Here she only came today as she had signed up for a tour through the armory. She wanted some inspiration for a possible hero suit, not that she at this point believed it was necessary yet but you don't know with some classes so apart from that Rowan was just curious, as the quirkers were getting more and more in the world, Rowan wondered if the armoury of the soldiers here had changed in a way that it would accomodate that more and more too.
She had not paid attention to that, she had been to busy working on too much stress than actually doing something. She would had to be here at a quarter past one to follow the tour, that would be in 20 minutes or so, right now she stood in front of a coffee corner to buy a coffee, she could defintiely use something as she had been thinking too much, too harsh and too long before actually falling asleep and only to wake up several hours later and still not having made a decision. Thank god there was such a thing as make-up that was able to cover up the blue spots underneath her eye. She still looked like fresh picked daisy now and made sure that the lipstick she was wearing looked well before taking the to go cup and standing in a corner, away from the crowd that was vivedly talking to each other as she did not feel like barging in and demanding attention. She had too much on her head and looked at the little bubbles in the milk foam. It was not as if she actually ordered coffee, she had ordered a cappuccino, something a bit more luxurious that she could afford without a problem. Too many decisions and all she wanted to do was crawl back into her bed at home. Home, home, not the apartment where she lived, she still did not consider her own place as a home. |

The moment the military expo had been announced, Goro had signed up for one of the armoury tours. He hadn’t bothered to disguise himself; he wouldn’t exactly be recognized as a villain or anything so there was no point in expending the effort. He was dressed, quite simply, in a black suit with a grey tie, which also made him stand out compared to those dressed in outfits more intended for combat or training. He didn’t own any clothing besides this and his armour, so he hadn’t really had a choice.
He’d expected more from them, honestly. The tour hadn’t started yet, but pretty much everything he’d seen around the armoury was equipment he was already familiar with. To make matters worse, it was the middle of the day. Goro was about ready to pass out standing up when he made it to the coffee corner. He eyed his black coffee wearily before taking a sip. Too bitter. He quickly added a couple spoons of sugar, took another sip and then added another two spoonfuls.
He noticed a woman standing next to him, and quickly turned around to hide his coffee cup. “These people don’t understand anything about coffee-making.” He sighed, before taking another sip.

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ She looked at the coffee and hoped that it was actually as good as she expected, the shitty coffee that she had first found in the shopping centre near to her apartment, had made her dislike the taste of coffee for a couple of days. She had asked for her own coffee machine but her father had not responded and actually, she was sure of herself as a hypocrite because she did not want to do anything with her father at this point, he had not agreed on going to U.A. but here she was anyway. Or well now here was at Semper Fi but that did not matter at this point, she was just here to figure out a few things and with that had planned to follow this tour and hoped to get some information or demonstrations that she could appreciate.
The black haired student looked up to see how many people had shown up for this tour, at this point, she guessed six to eight, depending if everyone that was here would also go on the tour. She saw someone in the corner of her eye and wondered if it could be.. but no, it was someone she didn't know and she looked back at the coffee to take a sip. It gave her the shivers, not because it was still too hot for her to consume because Rowan, thanks to her spark quirk did not have that problem much, she was used to heat but because the flavor was... again not that well. She could not help but make a disgusting sound and mutter to herself: "I am very sure I had better coffee." But she had paid for it, there were not many options but to drink it up, her eyes looked at the familiar looking stranger, although she was a hundred percent sure she did not know him, she wondered if he was okay with the taste of this cheap coffee but did not want to ask and start a dramatic setting. She just had to wait. |

Out of the corner of his eye, Goro noticed the woman glance over at him. For a moment, he froze, worried she somehow recognized him despite how infinitesimally small the chance of that actually was. But, as she turned away again, logic won out and he breathed a small sigh of relief. She’d obviously mistaken him for someone else, and that was fine by him.
He sipped his coffee again; despite its terrible taste, he needed as much caffeine in his system as possible if he was going to make it through the day. Hearing the girl complain about her coffee as well, he turned to face her again, careful to stop his wings bumping into the table behind him.
“Right? The military should have better standards for beverages.” His expression hadn’t changed, but internally he was relieved someone understood. The bat had much experience with coffee, both good and bad, on account of his nocturnality. Society at large simply isn’t something you can function in at a hundred percent when you’re sleeping through the day, unfortunately, and Goro has long since learned this the hard way. Brewing his own coffee over the years has made chain coffee shops unbearable, but he didn’t exactly have a choice right now. Still, complaining made him feel a little better.

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ She wasn't entirely satisfied with being here, especially not if the coffee tasted so bad. She never really added any sugar, she had to look after her figure. Which reminded her about the conversation with Kanna and her hate on Rowan joining the cooking club, waste of time, hate was probably an exaggerating word. Rowan got slightly annoyed by it as others seemed to form their opinions and all she wanted was to be liked. Perhaps she should give up on that. However, she was sure that her own cold nature wouldn; draw in any friends, so it was not an option either.
It was better to stare at her cup and not confuse this guy with the person she had been more or less searching for. Actually, really searching was exaggerating, she had not been running around town to find him, Nick. It was just that being silently judged in a conversation did not happen with him, so she rather spoke to him than at this point to anyone else. She looked up after her mumbling because someone had answered and she noticed that it was the same person as she had looked at before. The one she had mistaken for Nick, he wasn't the same, though they looked quite alike. "I would surely be more motivated if the coffee was better." She tried to say as casual as she could, giving him a small smile, his own expression seemed to be more to the neutral expression, she would want to be able to do that, but instead would look way too angry. "I still have to find a good place to drink coffee in this town, since I just moved here." She decided to say, it was probably nice to have a conversation before the show was about to start or well, tour. |

Goro quickly realised he’d been too quick to start a conversation with this girl. Now they had started talking, he couldn’t simply fall silent again without it seeming awkward for both of them. However, for all his intelligence, he was woefully lacking in the social side of things. He knew very well why he was here at Semper Fi, but he couldn’t easily guess why anyone else would be. Some, he figured, were just here for the spectacle of seeing fancy weaponry or trained fighters, but those would be the reasons of people he, quite frankly, believed are beneath him.
This girl didn’t come off that way, she seemed smarter than that but, again, therein lied the problem. He didn’t exactly want to attract any undue attention to himself here, and so he didn’t want to insult her intelligence. Thankfully, the conversation hadn’t progressed nearly as fast as Goro’s thoughts; the girl was still talking about coffee. Good, he’d have time to work out what to say when complaining about coffee won’t cut it. “Unfortunately, I just moved here as well. I haven’t had the time to try most of the coffee shops here, but I doubt they’ll be as good as my own anyway.” The girl was smiling at him, for some reason, but he didn’t feel the need to smile back. Why should he? They’re strangers, she doesn’t need to know anything more about how he’s feeling. "Though it takes time to perfect making coffee at home, and I'm without my regular equipment right now."

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden❤ Her mood was, difficult to describe as she did not know herself how she really felt, what was it actually that she felt? Was she disappointed in herself, just grumpy or simply tired? Actually, she was feeling unmotivated, funny how she did just say that out loud about the coffee. Perhaps it was all the thinking, the thinking of people that she rather talked to that were not allowed and the conversations that had not made her happy. Perhaps it was better to just shut up instead of talking all the time and make matter worse.
She did not exactly know why she told this guy, this stranger, that she had just moved here because it was none of his business as well as that they probably would not meet again anytime rapidly. However, perhaps that was the reason why she should not be too concerned about it. Surprisingly, the stranger added that he moved here just as well. She wondered if she should state her name or that she should just let it be for now and live in the mystery of being here at a military basis just for a tour. It was rude to not introduce yourself but the judgemental conversations she had lately made it fun to be anonymous, maybe a fake name, no that was even ruder and she would not be able to come up with a name at such a short amount of time.
As she looked at him with the smile that she forced on her face, he did not seem to reply to the gesture and she took a sip of coffee to stop smiling so stupidly without making it obvious, she looked at her cup when she realized what he just said and listened to the last part,"Making your own, great coffee, sounds like a hassle." But she did not say it with a bitter tone, it would be interesting to try, but it would take too much time as he said so himself, she wouldn't have that luxury. |

The coffee had gotten cold by now, having gone untouched for a while. Throwing out a half-empty cup wasn’t something Goro wanted to do, but as each second passed it became harder to force the remaining coffee down. He may still be tired, but he was at least able to keep his eyes open now and wasn’t afraid of falling asleep standing up, so he didn’t need any more caffeine.
The girl’s response was about what he’d expected at this point. There really isn’t much to talk about regarding coffee when the other person has no knowledge of making it after all. His gaze drifted around the room, searching for a different conversation topic, before landing on one of the quirkless soldiers acting as guards.
“It’s not so much of a hassle when you get used to it. Once you get into the routine of brewing enough every day, it’s actually rather easy.” He replied, his gaze slowly returning back to the girl. He had a good idea of what he wanted to talk about now, but there wasn’t a clean way to segue from coffee to, well, anything else. Thankfully, this girl seemed about as uncertain about this interaction as he was, so with any hope she’d remember her own social fumbles far more vividly than any of his.
“They have all these armed guards here, and yet they probably wouldn’t be able to do anything against a single Quirker with a fair understanding of their Quirk.” He began, leaning back against the table behind them and flexing his wings slightly, “I imagine even now, military training mostly concerns combat against quirkless people. Look at the personnel here, they aren’t used to handling people with Quirks so often. They must have only considered running this expo to make sure the soldiers would all meet someone with a Quirk face to face at some point in their lives without a gun barrel between them.” He continued, keeping his voice low enough that only the girl would hear. He didn’t want to cause trouble with the guards he was talking shit about.
Typically, Goro would be more guarded with views like this, but he was currently too tired to care or think about it. All that was on his mind was trying to steer this conversation in a direction that would be easier to continue without awkward silences or pauses. The possibility that turning an innocent conversation about coffee into a long criticism of the military in a military camp would be just as awkward didn’t occur to him.

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden❤ There was a lot of things that could have been said or just a lot of things that remained to be unsaid as she had no idea what to talk about. She simply stared at the cup that now had the ugly brown black little mug of coffee beans, that showed how bad the coffee really was. She did not really know what to say anything more about it and well the whole idea of making coffee, again it sounded like a good hassle.
The way he spoke to her was some strange way, not in a way that she noticed how the conversation went dramatic to another subject but more like the way he spoke, so calmly, perhaps even without emotion as you could call it, that made it so strange. She couldn't forget to look at him, which was a polite thing to do in a conversation but it was also just happening because of the way the intonation of his voice, anything could happen, well that wasn't true, the conversation could go anywhere without her noticing. How did people learn to speak like that? Which meant that she simply looked at the guard behind her as he began the second part of the conversation. She didn't think it was strange as they were going on a tour of the armory. She raised her eyebrow because she slowly started to notice he was talking so softly that she could only hear it.
Suddenly she wasn't sure if she felt so save anymore but that was ridiculous as she was sure only idiots would try at something like semper fi and what was this for kind of assumption that she dared to make. Perhaps it was just an assumption, based on her own quirk, "It might not even be a bad idea, we-we have to co-exist in the end anyway." Little did she know what she would think in a few days in the future. |

“That may be how you see it, but what I meant is that I don’t think they feel the same way.” Goro replied, his voice still low. “They want to see what we’re capable of because they think that’ll stop us from taking them off guard when the inevitable happens.” Goro’s calm and measured tone of voice was one of the only things separating what he said from the ravings of a paranoid madman. He took one more sip of his now disgusting room temperature coffee before frowning and tossing it into the trash nearby, just barely flinching as the remaining liquid spilled onto the contents of the bin.
There wasn’t any more time for him to elaborate on his thoughts before one of the guards called out for touring guests to assemble over by the door to the armoury. Goro pushed himself off the table and headed for the assembly point, slowing his pace slightly to ensure the shorter girl didn’t end up pushed away from him in the crowd. He didn’t care about her and certainly had no desire to ever speak to her after this event, but leaving her with only half a thought of his seemed awkward and cruel. His thoughts were valuable, more than any other person’s as far as he was concerned, so denying them to someone willing to engage with them isn’t something he was looking to do.
However, the actual subject of the conversation would have to wait until after the tour. Military men like the ones showing them around the armoury surely wouldn’t take a discussion of their failings and prejudices very well, Goro figured. He pulled out his tablet from inside his suit jacket and tapped the Notepad icon. In his prior drowsiness, he’d forgotten to clear the previous page, and Notepad opened onto a rather sloppily-typed letter, or maybe rant, aimed at Nick. Goro didn’t visibly flinch, but inside he screamed at himself and hoped that that girl wasn’t able to read any of it as he quickly opened a blank document.
He’d written it on the way to Japan, hyping himself up for his revenge on Nick and making sure he wouldn’t find himself at a loss for words when they finally met again. Of course, things didn’t quite go as smoothly as he’d hoped and he hadn’t had the chance to say ninety percent of the insults he’d thought of. Even if the girl behind him was a ridiculous speed-reader though, she probably wouldn’t see more than swear words and assorted colourful insults aimed at Nick from the page anyway. There wasn’t anything about the Underground or, well, anything else aside from “fuck you Nick you tried to kill me bastard” rephrased in creative ways.

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ Her mind had made horrible assumptions but there was as always a split reaction in that thought, there was Rowan who was unsure about how that would be and what she would have to think of that, rather run than stay and fight if you have that idea of to flee or to fight, however ,there was another character with a more or less mind of her own. The Burning Lady was intrigued by the idea, would they really because if that was the thought of the guards and the others at semper fi, they surely had behaved differently from most of the people. Rowan was sure of that that not everyone was a fan of her but the assumption of a time influencing quirk which was most relating to creating a spark and thus explosions was why not everyone was so hyped about her quirk. She shielded that part of her thoughts for one of the first times for Rowan, that would come later, at this point it was already enough to worry about their own capability and she did not want to feel that problem. It was fun to just sometimes push the wrong buttons and watch her be agitated about that explosion that her hands caught but the reason why the Burning Lady did that was because she did want Rowan to develop herself better with the use of her quirk and that she would feel the sensation that it gave her to be cautious enough about it.
Rowan perhaps forgot but she was very sad considering some of her father's associates did not come over after that one accident and that people did not dare to shake hands with her anymore. That was not the matter now but she couldn't help but look at the guards one more time before they called out for the tour to start. She threw her own empty cup in the trash bin as well and looked up to the person whose name was still unknown to her and vice versa. She had decided, even if it was against the rules of her childhood, that she would not give her name and not make up a fake. They would probably never meet again and that was okay. He gave her goosebumps the way he spoke but yet she wanted to listen and when he held in his quick steps, she would catch up with him again.
She looked at him, without perhaps noticing much, but how he was prepared and even got a tablet to make notes and... for a second she thought she saw a name that she recognized but that was ridiculous, she would look aside because it was rude to simply stare and she seemed to have just realized. Besides she had seen two letters connected: ni and made the assumption. She took her own phone from her pocket, she had not planned to make notes but she could do at least something if she found it interesting. The guy that organized the tour for them and would explain a few things told them, that they could not take pictures, which she found ridiculous, there was something probably on the internet, but she did not feel like taking pictures and to start the discussion so she simply nodded and waited till it started.
The guy explained something about how they worked and how the military was changing its approach and work because of the start of quirks and that they were very open minded about the future perspective of having quirkers among them. She doubt that, considering what happened on her diving mission. |

That girl hadn’t been pushed away by the crowd yet, thankfully. He still had every intention of talking to her when the tour ends, and he’ll be damned if this ignorant crowd would keep him from finishing his thought. He felt like asking her for her name, to make it less awkward later, but that’d leave some kind of lasting attachment between them and that was the last thing he wanted.
The tour began, and Goro winced as they stepped into the first hallway. The lights were harsher than in the hall; it was as if someone was pointing a flashlight directly into his eyes. He gritted his teeth for a couple seconds as his eyes adjusted to the light, thankful that he’d bothered to finish his coffee. If all the indoor lighting is going to be like this, he’ll need all the help he can get.
What the tour guide was saying didn’t help Goro’s mood any. “Open-minded?” He muttered sarcastically, pushing his glasses up with his middle finger. “I’m sure.” With the crowd’s chatter, and the tour guide still speaking, it would’ve been hard for anyone to hear him. Still, even with the tour guide behaving like… that, he couldn’t just ignore everything he says.
The tour finally reached its first stop, but there wasn’t much of interest to him. Just a demonstration of the military’s oh-so-impressive bulletproof vests. Goro made a token effort taking notes; he already knew all of this already, but he didn’t want to draw any attention to himself, and the few others with tablets were taking notes already.
Bulletproof vests seemed rather antiqued to him at this point. Sure, guns aren’t a non-issue now, but your average quirk would more than overpower Kevlar and some metal plates. No matter what improvements they’ve made, it’ll been a fruitless endeavour in the end.

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ She was munching on the idea what the stranger had said while listening to the person that gave the military tour. She looked shortly at the man, would they really open minded? It felt like it was a lie to tell because they were all at semper fi and they had to play the open-minded figure. The thing was that the instructors from the diving area were absolutely mean to her. She wasn't sure if that was because of her quirk specifically or about quirks in general and she had not felt the need to ask, she had only felt the need to prove that she could do that rescue mission and in the end, she and Miku had managed. She looked shortly at the floor while they walked, but the Lieutenant from the training area had been very nice to her, especially when she sort of literally exploded and hurt Kirk, the private guy from the shooting range had been nice too, to her and Masaki and even let them show what they got with their quirks. She was probably seeing fire even if there was only smoke. She was making too many assumptions and tried to focus on the tour now.
She was mostly interested in the first aspect of the tour because she wondered how good the bulletproof vests were against her quirk. If she would touch the vest, would it explode? Would it still exist if she threw her quirk at it? She looked at it and tilted her head from left to right. She wasn't standing at the front row, so she couldn't see all of it but it as something in her mind. Perhaps it was mostly the Burning Lady who wanted to know what their abilities needed to become to fight something like that. "They probably should update it considering quirks." She muttered not entirely in a whisper, so a person next to her would hear it. She did not feel like discussing it anyway and simply shook her mind and waited for the next aspect. The guy was just talking and answering questions that did not interest her. He told them about the facilities that they used to train with such vests and the like. |

Were bulletproof vests really that interesting? The girl next to Goro was staring at the vests intently, tilting her head this way and that like a confused puppy. Meanwhile, Goro was struggling to even pretend to take notes, and despite the caffeine in his system’s best efforts he felt like he was about to fall asleep standing up. He still stared down at his tablet though, using his Quirk’s benefits to keep an “eye” on Rowan instead.
The girl spoke up, echoing Goro’s thoughts on the vests somewhat and, enthused that he finally had something to engage with again, he couldn’t stop himself from replying. “Right? What use would they be against the kind of blunt force or explosive power a Quirk could yield?” The girl’s tone of voice, suggesting she didn’t exactly want a conversation about the subject, only crossed his mind after he’d already opened his mouth. Thank God he’d at least had the self-control to keep his voice low.
Another test round was fired at the vests as if to punctuate his sentence, but the aim on it was off. It hit just shy of the body armour, and instead shot directly into the metal panel it was mounted on. Goro flinched; the ricocheting bullet even at a logically safe distance felt like it was heading straight for him, and the sudden sharp noise was grating on his sensitive ears. The rest of the crowd were surprised as well, but the tour guide quickly calmed them, reassuring them the test fires are done with blanks, as a technician moved into the exhibition space to alter the test gun’s aim. Meanwhile, Goro clutched his tablet to his chest with shaking hands, his eyes slightly wider than usual but his expression otherwise unnaturally calm and at odds with his body language.

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ She couldn't help but keep up with her big mouth, thank god she wasn't standing in the front as it would not be good to have comments about everything. She wasn't entirely sure if she should even comment at all as she had barely any ideas about the military or how it should work and all. She was at least glad that what she said wasn't all that dumb as the stranger seemed to agree and she looked back at him and nodded. "Perhaps that is kind of what they want to figure out too?" It seemed too strange though and what he said as well, not that it was strange but how could you make a suit that protected you against blunt force or explosive power like her own. Was there even a design for that? After all, if she would be able to manage to touch someone's bulletproof vest, it would explode itself. This was the whole reason why she had looked all around, she wondered, she thought, she sketched in her mind but nothing came up in her mind. She had to consider it for her own hero outfit as well.
She stared with big eyes at the test round because it made no sense how much the aim was off. It gave her the shivers for some unknown reason. She looked at who shot and noticed it was not really someone but the machine. "This is crazy." She said in the same manner, as she felt sure that the stranger agreed with her. She had to say it because of the agitation that it happened, what would they be able to teach her if it was something like this. She had good experiences beforehand but her mind went in a rapid spin of the other side of this exhibition. |
