Immediately replying, "Oh no, I think your quirk is great. You deserved to win, I might have just been a little overconfident..." hoping to reassure Rowan. In truth, he wasn't all that cocky about anything competitive. When he was afforded the luxury of winning, he could take away a feeling of satisfaction and when he lost, he simply opted to learn how he could improve. His new associate was right that he was both calm and collected; in truth, Masaki was always like that.
"Haha, no. I'm nothing like that." Masaki waved his hands from side to side, hoping to correct her. "I seem pretty calm, but not for any virtuous or practiced reasons," he made sure to add. Being calm for him was just a side-effect of being so far removed and detached from other people for so long. His upbringing and introverted personality forced him to be that way, even when he was anxious.
"Nonetheless, I did think I would do slightly better than that. So, you must be greater than I realized." Masaki was disappointed by the thought but hadn't expressed it; instead he disguised it with praise toward Rowan.
Speaking of, he was glad to hear her accept his offer. It had been a while since he had a nice one-on-one conversation. His class, 1-B, was a lively and outgoing bunch. Plus, they were all mostly girls and in great numbers they made him a social mess. This situation wasn't much different, given that Rowan was also a young lady, but he didn't feel nearly as overwhelmed. Walking with his new acquaintance, she seemed reserved. Probably because she didn't have anything to talk about, he presumed this was all very sudden. So, Masaki did what he did best - find a topic.
What do we have in common? I don't know, I barely know her other than her being a student... Masaki scratched the side of his face. Oh, I know.
"That quirk you have, how does it work?" he asked curiously, bringing the topic back to what he saw her do. "Mines makes me function like a weird magnet. I can push and pull metals to and from my respective location," Masaki grew excited at the prospect of learning something, but never lost any of his elegant poise. His quirk was a little more specific than that, but that would mean dominating the conversation to explain it all. And when explaining something, Masaki tended to be thorough. So much so that he could probably outline faux scenarios until sundown.

@sugo | ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ It was always a smart idea to give compliments to a girl like Rowan, it would give you an immediately point up on the ladder of people she liked. The thing made it also better that there would be no darn burning comments from the Burning Lady, as if she was like a mean cat, she would be okay with the patting but would become a mean one as soon as you stopped. So she stayed quiet, also rather satisfied that they won, which was for once a positive thing about her quirk. Mostly, even if she believed she was in control as she showed Kanna, she believed she wasn't. Perhaps that had to do with the Burning Lady but Rowan believed that the voice could set off a detonating of her own hands and thus the activation of her quirk, followed by an explosion of whatever item she was holding and that would be disastrous.
Right now with the silent mean one, her alter ego, that fear was gone for this moment and she could relax. She still wanted to make a good impression so she had to mind her big mouth and not say stupid things that could be making a bad impression but she was getting good at that lately."Perhaps overconfident is still better than insecurity." She said casually, she had no idea what would be worse and she was not in the right mind to discuss such an idea, so she casually mention it to either wave it away if it was brought up again. She tilted her head a bit to the right as she had just called him calm and collected and he said he simply looked like that without any practice. She more looked like she would yell at someone if she had her face in a neutral position, she tried to tell herself that every time, to make sure to stop automatically frowning and try to smile more. "Aah, well it looks rather soothing I would say, especially in the hectic of our hero classes from time to time, I bet." Would be nice to have a partner for such classes and in the future who did not look like he would be afraid but rather calculated, and like she said calm and collected.
Masaki was still collected in his words, no room for showing his own disappointment? Rowan could surely learn about that, she wondered if her quirk was actually better, perhaps it simply had to do that she barely needed an aim as strict as what his quirk needed, with the knives because her explosion would be bigger than just a pinprick. She simply gave him a lovely smile, or well what she considered one in her own made up acting career, mainly because she had no idea what to say at all.
She followed Masaki out of the hall and wondered if he planned to go somewhere specifically or had anything specific in mind for it came a bit out of the blue for her. Not that she minded, it would be rather satisfying to indeed make some friends and that was a good thing. She turned her golden eyes to Masaki as he asked her about her quirk but started to explain his, which was a nice thing. It made it at least that she could learn something without feeling she was imposing on people that tried to hide their quirk. "I would say mine is rather difficult to explain." She remembered how Miku had some difficulty understand and she bet his quirk was far more expansive in an explanation than what he just said. "I sort of am able to quick up the time of molecules and that creates friction or in other words a spark thanks to which the item I touch explodes in a couple of seconds after I touched it. I hope that made sense." She could say much more about it or explain a bit of the scientific way, she wasn't good with that in general but her quirk was her own and she had made it her own by understanding it. It only sometimes worked on her emotions instead of she herself being in control of activating it. |

While he might have been slow with people, he was definitely able to put one and one together. Claiming that overconfidence was better than insecurity, if Masaki fit into the former description she must have been talking about herself in the latter category. "Don't like that," Masaki waved a hand through as if he was trying to wipe away the negativity in the air. "I think you're plenty fine, if from what I've seen from you so far is any indication I mean" he explained with a shrug, trying not to come off as the type to be too optimistic. In truth, he wasn't - he was a realist, and everything so far only indicated Rowan would be just fine. Not everyone could make things go 'pop'.
However, something was kind of off about Rowan and he couldn't quite put his finger on it. He knew why he was so strange and maybe even boring to others, he was a shut-in that spent way more time with his books than people. Most of the time his smiles were just lies to make him appear more eccentric and lovable to others. He was used to the other U.A. students; aggressive, outgoing, and over-the-top. But maybe he was wrong? He was pretty sure everyone knew Miku and she wasn't like that; however, it was everyone's job in class 1-B to protect her smile.
Soothing wasn't the right word for his expression, it was scarier than that. It was insensitive, a lack of feeling and pure calculation. He envied her insecurity for different reasons because it was a feeling less hollow than the normal expression he always wore. Calm and calculated was nice when it was useful, but all the time? Masaki wouldn't wish that on anybody else. "It can be nice, when it's useful" Masaki paused, looking gloomy for a moment. He might have been great in a crisis, but in moments like this - he usually had to pretend he was having a good time.
"I think I would rather be panicky and unsure." Masaki remarked, without really giving a reason. He put a smile back on his face and listened intently to the description of her quirk. It was short, sweet, and to the point.
He rubbed his chin with his thumb and index fingers, nodding his head. "It makes perfect sense to me" he smiled, a nerd when it comes to all thing's science. He didn't like to self-proclaim he was the smartest boy in the school when it came to math and science, but so far... he had yet to be proven wrong. "To generate your explosion from friction... hmm, that is quite fascinating. Normally a contact explosion occurs on a substance that responds to friction, pressure, sound, or light. But to be able to do this to any object? Hmmm... very interesting."
Masaki began to rant on about a bunch of scientific facts, but quirks usually broke these rules. Often, which was made it such a mystery. He reached for her hands. "And it works with touch?" he would hold them in his hands and rotate them gently, hoping to bring them close enough to examine with his eyes. "No physical abnormalities? So, your quirk is probably an emitter type then. I wonder what composition you induce onto the object you touch. Or maybe it's the bonds... or you alter its structure!" Masaki finished his thoughts and realized he would have been holding her hands and released her quickly. For two reasons. Number one, she was a girl and number two, he really didn't want to explode.
"Sorry about that," he flushed red in embarrassment. "I really get into science."

@sugo | ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ It was good being here, it soothed her soul a bit better for as far as she knew. Hanging out with her mother had definitely not been a problem but it was the moments that her father was home that she clearly lost the ideas of her quirk and with those effects, it was surely not that he would give her compliments as she was far from calm and collected. She was angry and felt used and she should not think about it for too much and just give a smile to Masaki as a thank you. She had no idea how else to point that out, this was the best she could do and it was rather soothing than worrying on. One day she might control her quirk even better, no matter her own emotions and most of all, she would be able to grow in the way that she hoped for.
No one would know what it was like to be the opposite until the moment they would have experienced it at first hand and not just see or hear about it, something that they were perhaps in a bit envious about each other. She had no idea what he meant with: when it's useful. Wouldn't it always be like that? But she did not feel like discussing it, the thing as that it did feel to her because it would be compared to a panicky and unsure feeling. She did not trust herself because of a voice in the back of her mind and she did not trust society to give a shit about it."It sounds like something debatable?" She said more or less as a question because she had her doubts but again she did not want to be rude and just ignore it at all. Though at this point, she did not mind talking to Masaki, even if they did not disagree, some others had left other impressions on her. "I mean more, that no one would understand until they experienced, something like that?" She wasn't good at this, no one ever disagreed with her or well yes he did, but he was never there so it had no effect. She looked at Masaki with a look that said she had a lot to learn, you only needed to be able to read that to understand her in general.
To the point where she explained her quirk to Masaki, she tried to make it as sweet and easy to understand, as she had an experience that many did not understand and she wanted to avoid that. It was the first time that she made perfect sense to someone and her mouth opened a little in a silent o of surprise. "Well it's not that far trained yet to use any object but like the cans and small items will do." She said with a nod to support Masaki his track of thought as he summarized it a bit. As they stopped walking because of the conversation and no destiny she stared with eyes that turned bigger at him holding her hands. The way he formed the question was exactly the reason why some people did not even dare to touch her hands, some even exaggerating thinking she could explode everything with a touch of her skin which wasn't true. "Y-yes." She felt a blush creep up on her cheeks and looked away when he asked and she did not know how to respond, mostly because there was a lack of sound from her voice and not because she did not know what to say. "That's okay." She tried to say, proud she did not stutter as he had admitted he liked science. "I always had a dream to figure out how it works. My mother said it is changing the structure in the molecules but no one actually confirmed that." |

She was entirely correct, it was something that was debatable. However, Masaki hated debating anything that wasn't something solvable with science. Politics and peoples feelings instantly came to mind. Shrugging at her comment, he could only presume she was right. He didn't really know that many people, but people usually were their strictest critics and Masaki was no different in that regard. "You're right, I think. I would have to experience it for myself," he finished with a smile, hating the phrase 'I think'. He would much rather know.
However, he was still embarrassed by his shameless and very apparent nerdiness. Thankfully, she didn't seem too fazed by it - aside from a slight blush and a very minor stutter. He wasn't the type of person to tease anyone about something like that; as a matter of fact, Masaki was happy she hadn't teased him about it. There were a handful of people who probably would have laughed at him for being so invested in science and math. "I would love to help with that!" Masaki jumped at the opportunity to figure out how her quirk actually worked. He wouldn't be the one to pass up an unsolved mystery, but this clearly was neither the time nor place to start trying to figure it out. He was better off trying to use lab equipment elsewhere to try and figure it out.
"Of course, if you're okay with that," Masaki laughed and scratched his head, clearly jumping the gun just a bit. In comparison, his quirk was much simpler to understand. It was just magnetism or rather, the ability to make himself act like a magnet. The possibilities with his quirk were endless, especially in a world that naturally ran on it and developed industries that relied on objects that it interacted with. "It isn't every day that you get to see a controlled explosion take place. It makes me wonder... to what extend of material can you interact with? Nevermind, I could ask questions all day."
Catching himself, he decided to jump topics. He didn't want to bore her, not everyone was into hitting the books like he was. Overall, Masaki was having a much better time than he had thought. The day started off strange enough, but turned out better than he expected. Even if he not only lost, but lost disastrously to Rowan. It's all about the friendships made, right? At least that's what he would tell himself so he could go to sleep tonight.
"So, what else are we going to do?" Masaki asked with a smile, prepared to try and work with his new friend to figure out what else they could do.

Rowan: 53 x 2 = 106
Masaki: 46 x 2 = 92
