An arena like this, with so many quirkers around, presented some unique opportunities that Alex didn’t always get. Ever since the public rankings of U.A. students came out, the American had been antsy. Many would have been excited, thrilled even with being ranked #5 out of about sixty current hero class students. There was a General Studies kid in the top ten as well, which was absolutely bullshit but meant that it included them as well. The absolute humiliation of being ranked below a general studies student was unfathomable, and Alex was glad he didn’t have to deal with that particular shame.
Alex was happy with some aspects, sure. He was the top ranked student in his class, which surprised him because he completely expected Darren to take that spot. If the poll had been done after Darren’s fight with that monster in the park, it probably would have been. He was also the top male student in U.A. according to that list, which was another curious development. It narrowed the field of potential threats very well, and it narrowed down the field of people that he could definitely learn from even more. It let him focus the free time that he did have into people that could help him improve and helped him avoid useless sparring and training alongside or against the scrubs of the class who got in by accident.
Rin was number one, because of course she was. The girl knew how to stir up drama like nobody’s business within the school, and he had absolutely no doubt that sly bitch did the same in regards to pollsters as well. The girl was always cozying up to faculty and trying to put on that horridly fake innocent act when anyone with eyeballs could see how much of a snake she was. The girl was a manipulator and it was disgusting how much attention she got for doing so little. Jaz was number two, which was pretty expected. She was always going to place high with a quirk as powerful as hers, no issues there because she was a goddamned powerhouse of a woman. Lani was number three, and in the American’s opinion probably should have been number one. She was the only one among the school who had captured a villain and made press for good reasons at the time the poll was conducted. The fact that Rin was number one instead of Lani or Jaz was honestly a travesty and undermined the legitimacy of the poll in his eyes.
Number four was Miku, who had a plant manipulation quirk and honestly was probably the most boring and vanilla person Alexander had ever met. If plain tofu was given human form, it would have a personality like Miku’s. No doubt and no question about it. Those were the four people above him, with him at number five rounding out the elite caste of U.A. The fact that plant girl was ahead of him honestly bothered him a lot, because he saw absolutely nothing in that girl. She was awkward, didn’t seem tough at all, and honestly seemed more suited for General Studies than hero school. The public seemed to disagree, however, and she was actually one of the people that he was seeking out in the combat area at that very moment. He had to learn why she was so highly regarded, because if he didn’t know why she was ranked so highly then it would be much harder to plan a way to surpass her.
Really, anyone in the top 5 would be a welcome sight to jump in and at least spectate. Lani was someone that Alex didn’t know much about, not even what her quirk was. Something to do with swords, if he remembered right, which honestly didn’t seem as useful as something like gigantic explosions if he was being real. His red gaze surveyed the training area, where there were already several sparring matches going on, looking for people that he recognized. Several, but none were the exact people that he was looking for. He wanted someone he could learn from, not someone that he would just stomp like an insect. With his ranking, he was a marked man now and had to be as efficient with his training time as he could be to prevent some other snake from taking his hard-earned spot.
As he walked past, though, he saw a sight that made his blood absolutely boil. The short, blonde form of Miku wasn’t exactly hard to spot. The girl had an instantly recognizable and dumb looking haircut with the bangs off so far to the side there might as well be the Grand Canyon between them, and an equally dumb looking sailor outfit on that seemed to be her standard. He had no idea what possessed her to wear something like that when her Dad definitely wasn’t a sailor and they weren’t on the coast, but that wasn’t what pissed him off in the moment. What pissed him off at the moment was the very clear body language of Miku wanting to go enter one of the sparring arenas in some of the grass and a fucking punk waving her off like she was a random little girl or something. Like she was a goddamned tourist. Like she wasn’t the #4 ranked student in U.A. or something.
Oh no. This wasn’t happening. This wasn’t going through. Alex walked up with his jaw clenched and his eyes locked on the fucking punk telling Miku no, and he caught the tail end of the fucking bastard telling her that only trained personnel could enter the combat area due to liability reasons and he couldn’t allow someone like her in. Someone like her, huh?
”Listen here you Bucky Beaver looking piece of shit.” he butted in, physically as well as verbally in reference to the guy’s rather prominent front teeth. He slithered past Miku without touching her to get in the guy’s face in an aggressive manner more befitting her father than a fellow student. ”Grab a friend, any friend you want. You wanna turn away the number four ranked student at U.A.? We’re doing this right now you animal. Pick a partner to face me, and you’re squaring up against Miku here who is going to shit down your throat so violently you’ll be coughing up blobs of it for the next month!”

This was amazing. Miku was finally able to learn and practice how to fght. Since her father adamantly refused to teach her how to fight, Miku had to look for other options. She wanted Darren to teach her how to fight, since he looked mean and scary, not to mention he was the President Boss Leader of the Martial Arts Club. But Miku did not want to enter his club. She planned to ask him for private lessons, maybe even sway him with monthly pay. She NEEDED to learn how to fight. But this what just happened was just simply great timing. To be able to enter a military camp simply because she was a Quirk User was amazing. The goverment was awesome.
Miku found a sparring arena and wanted to enter. But was stopped by a trained person who thought she wasnt cut out for it "Hm? Wha? No no no. You misunderstand. I am not a tourist. I am Japanese and I am with the UA. I can do this. I promise" she said, trying to convince the fella, but her persuasion has failed, where the person mentioned some liability reasons "No no. I am good. There's grass and soil. I'm fine with that. I-I can show you-"
But then as she was talking, an unexpected Hero Person came to her 'rescue'... or better yet assistance... Alex. Of all the people to show up, it was Alex. The one who made shitposts of 1B not existing. The one her dad wanted to kill. The one who spilled juice on Aki. Was that the SAME Alex?? Impossible. This has to be some competent good twin. This Alex was very heroic and nice and an upstanding fella. Wow. Miku had no idea what to say. But she had an idea what she had to do. This version of Alex wanted to show what UA has. A two on two battle. Well... he stood up for Miku. She couldnt fail him now.

Yoshi Miwa, in a few words, was a career woman. There wasn't a skull she wouldn't crush or an ass she wouldn't kiss to get what she wanted, in whatever way she wanted. She made that abundantly clear after making Sergeant within only a year of entering the military. War school, as they had so aptly called it back then, had strengthened the woman's drive further than her family could have ever. And as the brunette hailed from a family of militarists and warmongers, it was safe to say that the stern woman never lacked the motivation to prove herself.
Now the Sergeant had found herself back in Japan, having followed the trail of her current charge, Colonel Kazuo Masanori. The older male was... an interesting individual. One she had no trouble following into the fray. His excitement and paradoxical disgust in regards to this entire quirk business was one that had Miwa rubbing her head in confusion not once and not twice. It wasn't until she was let in on the Colonel's rather diabolical plan that she had jumped on board without so much as a second thought. Now the female had found herself as one of the administrative personnel of the combat area - a place designated to supposedly test and train these 'quirker' dogs to see if they could be of any use to the military. What utter nonsense.
She sighed to herself as she rubbed her temples; what utter bullshit. What the hell was the brass thinking? As if to cement her thoughts, she had bore witness to a scuffle just outside the training area. She wasted no time in approaching, her posture and the way she carried herself betraying an air of confidence and authority. If there was one thing the dark-haired soldier could prove it was that she took shit from nobody.
The situation had become abundantly apparent to her the closer she got and frankly it practically lit up a light bulb above her head. This was the perfect chance to see what these so-called hero students from this new school were capable of. And as she stopped, brown eyes glaring at the male student, leveled him with one of the most stern gazes the kid had probably ever seen, "Simmer down, maggots," she ordered, her voice cold and commanding, leaving no room for argument whatsoever.
"You're looking for a challenge. Very well. Let's test that childish bravado. Get in there. Get warmed up. And make sure to find yourself a mouth guard before you lose any teeth. Both of you." This wasn't an offer. This wasn't some kind of test. By Yoshi's tone alone the two students should've realized exactly what they had just gotten themselves into. With that pest Ryouta nowhere to be found, the Sergeant knew she could have some fun.

The buck toothed soldier tried to get some words in edgewise, but the American just got in his face and essentially shouted him down. The damned shmuck had to be saved by the angriest looking bitch that Alex had ever seen in his entire life – which was honestly saying something because he had interacted with Kanna before. The sudden and sharp voice startled Alex for just a second before he turned to her with renewed anger and indignation. He was not going to be treated like a goddamned animal. The boy had a tenuous relationship with authority even back at school, so there was no way in hell he was going to be intimidated by authority from an organization he didn’t even belong to. He wasn’t a goddamned soldier, so the chevrons on this bitch’s shoulders didn’t matter to him. The American wasn’t beholden to a rank because he was still a damned civilian, and he was more than willing to exploit that fact.
”We’ll see what’s childish after we smash the shit out of you and Bucky over here. You say the word and we’ll smash both of you in the dirt.” the American retorted with heat in his voice, his blood boiling at being treated like a fucking kid. He was not going to stand for this shit, and he sure as hell wasn’t going to stand for Miku to be treated like this either. It wasn’t even that he even liked Miku or really gave a shit about her as an individual, it was simply the fact that if the number four student wasn’t treated with respect… then how were the other students being treated? If this kind of behavior wasn’t nipped in the bud very quickly and very violently, Yuuei would become a laughing stock among professionals before anyone even got the chance to graduate and that was unacceptable. They had to defend the honor of Yuuei High no matter what it took, and if that required beating the absolute shit out of some loudmouthed uniforms… well, that was a sacrifice Alex was willing to make for the greater good of society and the school as a whole.
”Let’s get out there, Miku.” he all but barked as he jogged his way out in the grassy area. Once they were out of earshot of the bitchy lady and the beaver, the boy sketched out the broad strokes of a plan to Miku in a low voice. ”I don’t know how good you are up close, but I’m worthless. I’m great at range, though, so if we can keep them from reaching us I think we should be good. You have enough plants around here to keep them tied up?” he asked, his red gaze turning to Miku for the first time, perhaps, as a perceived equal. ”If you do that, I can use my quirk to pummel the shit out of them. Or we can do the opposite, if you want. They pissed you off first, so you get dibs if you want to be the pummeler.”

So Alex's good clone actually did the work for her. She really didnt need to say a word. He had this situation handled wonderfully. Now if only the Alex she knows and tolerates was like this, the guy would've probably had all the women he wants.
After this very nice person said his piece to the mean military men. He jogged his way into the grassy area. Miku followed him and as soon as the two were out of earshot. He spoke and explained that he's good at long range combat. Miku explained "Yea, I'm poo at close range as well. I thought I'd be able to learn here. But it seems I wont be able to... ah well. But Im good with plants and I'm sure I can restrain them and do other stuff. You can pummel em, you deserve it"
Honestly these people didnt qute piss her off nearly as much as they should. Perhaps due to this camp being new to her and this was her first visit to the place that she was still blinded by curiosity and wonder of what else this military camp has. Miku still believed not all people were like this
And heck, if no one shows her how to fight. She could always ask... Darren. After all, he was the one in charge of the Martial Arts club

With a low scoff, the Sergeant held her head high as she listened to the teenager speak. This rebellious attitude made her remember some part of herself during her years in War School where she used to show up upperclassmen like it was her day job. Then again Yoshi was always someone who walked the talk, proving her bravado by consistently earning top spots in whatever she was doing. Whenever there was a ranking involved, you could be guaranteed the name Miwa would always be in the top three. It was part of what made her a successful career woman. That and her unrelenting drive to keep on improving through whatever means necessary, some of said means not necessarily improving herself at her core but her image in the eyes of certain key people.
"At ease, Private," she instructed to the timid looking guard at the gate, "make sure no other pipsqueaks pass through this time." The instruction had been borderline ominous with the glare she had given him, and with her words her hidden meaning would be obvious to anyone who had even some remote knowledge about the woman; do not let the Lieutenant in. How you did it didn't matter. She was about to have some fun and she wasn't about to let some self-righteous asshole ruin it.
Stepping inside the training grounds, utterly ignorant of the two kids playing strategist, Sergeant Yoshi Miwa approached two soldiers; these ones were tall, lean, and clearly trained for combat scenarios. They were in the middle of a hand-to-hand spar using real knives; it was the two's specialty, after all. They had been two of the soldiers she had personally trained at some point, showing great promise in the way the carried both themselves and their craft. They had been her underclassmen at War School. Honestly might have even had a little bit of a crush on her, as far as she could tell. She licked her lips; the men were pretty fine to look at. Maybe if they did well...
With a smirk on her face, she let her mind wander for a brief moment. Of course they'd do well.
"Kimura, Ikeda, at attention," she called out, the two men glancing at her curiously. The second they realized who had been addressing them the two soldiers tensed and stood at the ready, saluting the woman in the respectful militaristic way that had been ingrained in them over the years, "I'm going to need you two for a demonstration."
"Yes, ma'am," Kimura replied, lowering his hand. Towering at about 194 centimeters, Kimura Suzuo was as strong as he was fast. Strong enough to rip a raging bull into pieces using his bare hands, his sturdy frame often acted to deceive enemies into thinking he was a slow more. On the contrary - the man was as agile as a cat. It was one of the things that made him a force to be reckoned with in the ring. Hand-to-hand-wise this man was probably one of the most dangerous individuals among the current private class. Even the Sergeant herself might have had some issues dealing with him in the ring.
"What's the agenda?" Ikeda Tetsuzo was just a tad shorter. Standing at about 186 centimeters of height, he was a slender individual with a deceptive strength that not many could catch on to. He wasn't particularly bulky, not did he stand out that much. But the fact of the matter was that Ikeda's muscles have developed to obnoxious levels, hidden strength enough to challenge even the strongest of Olympians. His skills with grappling were also second to none; caught in a choke hold, there was very little chance you were escaping this spider's net.
"We have two kids here from Yuuei trying to show us how badass they are. They've asked for a spar against anyone," she said, smiling sweetly, though it was easy to notice the ill intentions behind her smile. The two privates clearly had if the knowing chuckles coming from them were any indication. "So I want you to show them what's what. Don't go easy on them."
That last part was all they needed to hear. Yuuei meant Quirkers. Quirkers meant trouble. They weren't going to go easy on them anyway.
Stretching, the two men slowly approached the teenagers, standing at about ten meters away from them. Kimura crackled his knuckles, Ikeda rotated his neck to get some of the kinks out. Their knives had been holstered, yet there was no reason to believe they wouldn't use them in the fight. The Sergeant left rules of engagement painfully clear - anything goes. And if these kids were studying to become 'heroes,' they should be painfully aware of the fact that, on the battle field, anything could happen. They weren't about to make this practice session anything less than reality.
"We'll give you the first move, kiddo," Kimura addressed Alexander aloud. Smirking, he figured he'd rile the kid up, see how short his fuse was. "Don't let this end too quickly, huh? Would hate it if this turned into an utter waste of time, which I bet it probably will." His voice had been laced with amusement and had been patronizing as heck, just as he had intended. Ikeda couldn't even help the facepalm that came after his comrade's antics, feeling like it was too damn typical of him. For his part, Ikeda glanced at the shorter blonde girl that was with him, making the man quirk a curious brow. This girl didn't look like the fighter type at all. What was she even doing here? Perhaps her quirk was suited for fighting to the point that she didn't need much physical preparation? That... made no sense. But then again nothing about these kids with abilities that seemed from fairy tales made sense.
Yoshi, for her part, stood aside, folding her arms below her breasts. She took out her military issued iPad like device and tried to pull up the two kids' records.

A criticism about Alex that was said over and over again was that he was overconfident. That he was too cocky and was too arrogant to take his opponents seriously. He disagreed, of course, but even if the criticism was valid it would mean that these fuckers were worse. First, the sergeant doesn’t even face them herself, and instead gets two goddamned privates to do her dirty work for her. That was insulting, and she was going to be extremely mad when these two got their faces thrown in the dirt.
Second off, it was completely clear that neither of them had any idea what either Miku or Alexander’s quirks were or how they worked. He wasn’t completely sure if his blonde classmate’s quirk worked the same way, but for Alexander he had to rip matter from each individual shadow. During certain times of the day this was exceptionally easy, but when the sun was overhead it became a bit more tricky. A lot of the times when pressed he relied on his own shadow or the shadows of other people as a crutch, but given time to sit there and individually locate each shadow around him like he had the opportunity to do now let him rip matter from each and every one of them.
The visual indicator for what he was doing was extremely subtle the way that the American was doing it. He was ripping matter from each clump of shadows around him in turn and pooling it all within his own shadow for easy and quick access. The shadows moved, sure, but it was across the ground and mostly hidden by the grass anyway since he kept the movement at the dirt line and not anywhere near the tops of the grass. It wasn’t that often that he was able to use all the shadows around him in an offensive assault like this. Normally during the day time he wasn’t able to use anywhere close to his maximum weight limit of shadows that he could construct at once, but with this preparation time he was going to come close as long as he didn’t move very much.
”I need to stay in this spot if possible. Ideal range for me is about halfway to us so they can’t run away and we have chasing room.” he whispered to Miku as the two soldiers took up post about ten meters away from them. One of them was built like a brick wall and looked about as smart as one, too. The other one was a scrawny dude who didn’t exactly look like Japan’s roughest killer. Both of them had knives plainly visible but sheathed on their bodies, and were moving at a pace one might even call leisurely which allowed the American to move onto the smaller clumps of grass around him, his red gaze shifting from his opponents as they set up to searching for shadows he had not exploited every second or so.
The walking brickhouse started talking shit in the most patronizing tone possible, which would have almost definitely worked if the American wasn’t using almost every iota of concentration to shift his gaze to every single untapped shadow source around him and flicking his gaze back and forth between his opponents and said shadows. ”I’ll tell you what,” he said, his red gaze shifting over to Miku for a moment and an exceedingly arrogant grin started to wash over his face as he had realized he had exploited every shadow that he could possibly see at this angle by this time. ”I can tell you’re not very smart with that puffed up face and those glassy, dead eyes with those glorious caveman eyebrows over them. I can also tell you’re not a very good fighter because the good lady over there sent you as muscle because she didn’t think we’re worth their time – so it means your big ass muscles don’t really mean anything if she considers herself that much better than you. I’ll give you a fighting chance, though.” he paused for a moment, making doubly sure the extra shadow matter was well hidden in his own shadow before continuing: ”I’ll close my eyes for about five seconds, and if you can close the distance between us in that time you might have a chance to put a finger on me before I smash your teeth down your throat, okay?”
With that, the American actually closed his eyes and raised his right hand in the air with all five fingers splayed out, counting down from that moment and hoping to goad the two soldiers into rushing him. His strategy in provoking these two guys and holding back all of his shadows meant that he was putting all of his faith into Miku. If she was able to stop them in their tracks, Alex would be able to unload all of the shadow that he had collected into them and stop the match almost instantly. If she was not able to stop or at least massively slow their movement… well, he was probably getting a knife to the gut after all that trash talking before he got the chance to blow his load. That sort of trust might seem out of character for the class representative of 1-C, but it really made complete sense to him.
He was putting Miku under pressure. She was essentially going to be the only person against two professionally trained soldiers that were most likely going to be rushing at Alex as fast as their legs could take them with killing intent. This was not part of the strategy that they had discussed earlier, so it would be a shift of events that she hadn’t planned for. If she could successfully fend these two off for even a few seconds, it would show that she deserved her spot in the rankings and it would mean that Alex could learn things from her. If she failed, then it would only solidify the belief that some of the rankings were bullshit and the placements were garbage. It was the fastest and most efficient way to evaluate how good Miku was in combat, essentially, even if it carried the risk of getting stabbed in the gut for himself personally.

Right, so this got way more serious then Miku imagined "And all I wanted was to practice my Quirk. Now I gotta deal with trash talking delinquants who wanna either hospitalize me or kill me" Miku thought as she mentally facepalmed
In order to achieve the best possible cooperation and team planning and such, Miku whispered to Alex what her Quirk can do "TLDR version, my Quirk allows me to manipulate plants like grass, vines, branches and flowers. And manipulate their growth and structure. The range of my Quirk is 3m radius. I dont want to reveal my Quirk when they're too far. I want to get them in the zone, so I can try and immobilize em for you. How about this. I make grass grow, like into tall grass. I use the blades of the grass and wrap them around the soldiers feet, immobilizing them?"
After she said that, a soldier starts shit talking to them. Miku was not gonna be provoked, she was gonna be level headed. But she needed to figure out how to fool the soldiers. Cover up her Quirk range. It seemed that Alex's ideal range was 5 meters, while her limits were 3 meters. After enough shit talking Alex closed his eyes and Miku was on her own "Ok ok. Game plan change!! I DISCOURAGE THEM FROM ATTACKING!! I-I'll make plants throw rocks at em!! And I'll restrain them!! I'll use the enviroment!" Miku thought quickly as she saw them start running
"Shit!" she whispered to herself as she quickly needed to spring into action. She manipulated the grass furthest away from her, which was 3 meters away. The grass grew and became tal grass, it would reach to an adults knee. She made the grass pick up some random roks or debree or anything and throw it at the soldiers to stop them or slow them down. And in case they entered Miku's zone of 3 meters. She would make the grass wrap around their legs to stop em. If they were to use knives, she'd try and make the grass regrow fast to regrab them "No way they're gonna get him. They're getting him over my dead body" she thought. If they passed her Quirk then she would friggin go up to them and stop them herself, stab or no stab

Kimura, the big one, lunged forward first with his more slender partner Ikeda following close behind once he realized what his musclebound companion was doing. They weren’t about to stand there and trade insults with a couple of arrogant kids, especially when the bout could be ended so quickly. Contrary to how many students at U.A. ran, the charge of these soldiers was not just the type of run one did to move quickly. It was the type of run with violent intent that at least Alex had never really seen before. Like a bayonet charge where the intent was not simply to go fast, but to move fast with the ability to shift all of your momentum into one strike at the end with devastating effectiveness.
Their advance was slowed but not halted by the emergence of the grass, and nor did they seem to be phased by the throwing of rocks and debris. Both of them were strong enough to not be knocked down by the plants wrapping around their legs and even to break through the plants, but not without it sapping nearly all of the momentum that they had. Each soldier showed their quick thinking ability and training by slashing through the grass that bound them to the ground with one fluid motion, but that only meant that they were grabbed by a different set of grass as they advanced so that they were never able to regain the momentum that they had lost. While Miku’s quirk by itself would not be enough to stop these soldiers from their advance, she had a partner that would be ready momentarily to do his half of this job.
When Alexander opened his eyes back up, the soldiers were still fighting their way through the grass trap that Miku had provided and he immediately unloaded the totality of his quirk at the aggressors. Twenty five pounds of shadow matter flew at high speeds towards each of the soldiers, and about a meter before impact each solid pillar of matter split off into inky black tendrils made of his quirk to individually strike at different parts of the body all at once. Really what was happening was that Alex was just manipulating them to lash out basically randomly, but at melee range lashing out randomly was as good as any other strategy for meting out punishment because at that distance most of the strikes were bound to hit something. It was something that he made a mental note to improve on, to have specific attack routines that he practices and memorized for situations like this so that he could combo moves into each other with different tendrils of matter instead of just kind of standing there and letting them do whatever the fuck.
Smashing, tripping, and pounding into the soldiers it wasn’t enough to take them down by itself. But it was enough to prevent them from cutting the grass as frequently as they were and it was enough to force them to back up in order to defend against the threat of Alexander’s quirk. They couldn’t defend against the full might of the quirk, but were able to tank the hits that they couldn’t dodge and systematically were cutting through each tendril in turn to the point where it was clear that if they were allowed to do that unopposed that they would eventually cut through all of it and make it to the two students. In the packets of grass that they had already cut down, they were strong enough to at least for now just snap the grass with their rather impressive strength.
Lucky for him, they were so focused on defending against his own shadow constructs that they stepped back into a patch of grass that they hadn’t cut down yet where Miku could finish the bout by launching enough grass to bind them that they couldn’t simply just muscle their way through and would expose them to the delinquent’s quirk firing all at once if they moved to cut themselves out before each limb was completely tied up. The number four student of U.A. provided the crowd control and traps, while the number five student of U.A. provided the offense to force them into the traps in the first place. Even though these two soldiers were definitely a cut above many others, the two students made a surprisingly effective team.
It was very possible that Alex was indeed wrong about Miku initially. Just because she was boring didn’t mean that she was useless in terms of learning potential and combat ability, it just meant that she was boring for the most part. She had a quirk that was a lot more useful than the delinquent initially thought and was smart enough to use it pretty effectively, so maybe that ranking was more accurate than he had initially thought. With a build like Miku’s, it would be very easy to underestimate her and that would mean an instantaneous loss for anyone who wasn’t a league above her in skill level. Speaking of leagues above in skill level, why was a girl as good as her dating such a scrub in Akio? The dude was pathetic and could barely tie his own shoes without getting his pathetic boot licking slime all over the place and basically bowed and scraped the instant someone he considered more important than him entered the room. It was disgusting, really, and he couldn’t see at all why Miku thought he was anything more than the human slug that he was.
”That should do it.” the delinquent said lowly but confidently, so that only Miku could hear. ”Great job stalling, that was fucking awesome.” he continued, confidently calling the match over at this point by even speaking about it in past tense. In his mind, this entire thing was just over because there was no way that the soldiers could react to his quirk at maximum power and Miku’s quirk trapping them so they had to take that beating until the match ended. There was no way they were getting out of this one.

Miku kept her cool, but was getting worried about the two soldiers coming at her. This was NOT what she expected as Quirk Training and the first day visit. She did her best to keep off the soldiers from Alex. Her plants couldnt stop them as they were simply too strong. But at least they slowed them down. It seemed even if tha grass wrapped around them it wasnt enough as they'd just cut the grass. Miku did her best to regrow it so it could try and grab them again. She did everything in her power to stall them.
But then luckily Alex came to the rescue with his shadow power. Miku had no time to be impressed by Alex, instead she focused on the battle to provide support in any way possible. And thus eventually with combined efforst the two students restrained the two soldiers. Miku was not sure that it was over, but Alex already treated it as a job well done. Even though she wasnt convinced that it was over, she did celebrate a teeny bit. She gave Alex a friendship hug which lasted 2 seconds and quietly said "We did it!"
Then she quickly let go and still focused on her Quirk, in case the soldiers still wanna fight

In that moment of distraction when Miku hugged him and Alex smugly declared victory, a knife that was thankfully a training knife arced through the air and hit Alex right in the throat. While he could talk trash and continue concentrating enough to keep up the assault with his quirk, an unexpected impact to the throat was enough to stop the attack and weaken the structure of the delinquent’s constructions enough for the soldiers to focus on cutting themselves out of the grass they found themselves in. Two hands immediately and instinctively reached for his throat as he completely lost focus for several seconds before gathering himself in time to do something really stupid.
The two soldiers cut or muscled their way out of Miku’s grass by itself as well as smashed through his weakened quirk within seconds and if it wasn’t for the girl’s quick reaction time in getting up more restraining plants the American would have already been a punching bag before he had the chance to recover. Holy shit, these guys were hardcore. ”Keep growing the grass and get ready to catch. Trust me.” were the words that came out of his mouth as he physically but lightly pushed Miku back with one arm as he looked around for shadows to rip again since most of his existing constructs were destroyed. He remembered most of their locations from last time, and not enough time had passed for any of them to really shift so it took far less than time to gather all the matter again.
Instead of going backwards, Alex gathered all of the shadow matter in a small circle around him in a way that made it look like there was this giant donut or something casting a big, wide shadow over top of him and went forwards instead. They could smash his constructs, fine. They could muscle or cut through Miku’s quirk, fine. They would attack given any opportunity, fine. He rushed towards them to take advantage of all of that and took a baseball slide the moment he got into melee range to dodge the blows up high and unleashed his quirk from the ground to create what was essentially several poles with small hands at the end that grabbed tightly to each soldier’s clothing and equipment as it shot upwards and lifted the soldiers up with the constructs. The striking stance that both of them instinctively did as Alex rushed them meant they were just a tad off balance, and that was all the delinquent needed.
Once they were in the air even an inch, all of the American’s concentration went solely to making his quirk as fast as it could possibly be as he hit as close to his maximum range of roughly ten meters in the air as possible before the fuckers smashed the pillars that held them up. If a drop this distance into an envelopment by the grass that was still growing at an obscene pace didn’t end this, they were in a pretty awful position. The landing of the soldiers wouldn’t exactly be smooth once they cut down the shadow constructs, though, because Alex was already prepared with two tendrils behind him to help slam the men down to the ground with even more force than gravity intended. One of those fuckers chucked a knife at his throat and that shit still hurt like hell! He wasn’t going to let them get away with that, and since he dumbly stopped considering them a threat he didn’t even know which one of them did it! Ugh! There was no way he could possibly ever be aware of every threat that came at him. Maybe he needed a cool super suit like Yumi to offer some protection from shit like that.
Alex may not have been the most naturally gifted student at U.A. and was far from the smartest or most experienced when it came to really anything that was tested. One thing that he did do extremely well, however, was adapt and learn when he was given the chance to actually do a task repeatedly and come up with solutions to problems as they arose. They might not have always been good solutions, but the complete lack of hesitation served him well even if his plans weren’t always the smartest. The delinquent may not have come into Yuuei High with a huge mastery of his quirk and being able to blast it to its fullest potential like Jaz or Darren did, but at the end of the year he may very well end up being the most improved. Going from zero combat experience to passable was a long and painful journey, but he felt like he might finally be ‘getting it’ and learning how to convert those good moments into wins by adjusting his game plan as needed and actually being willing to take those huge risks in order to take down people who were more skilled and experienced in the art of fighting.
These two guys were trained killers, and would absolutely annihilate him or Miku if they got even one hit that they could chain into a grapple or a combination that would probably break their rib cages. The solution, then, was to make sure they never got the chance and to inflict enough damage to end the fight before they ever got in a position to grab a hold of either student. Simple in idea, but way harder in execution as he had learned rather quickly. And really, it wasn't even his doing that made them able to last that long. Miku had come in clutch and saved his ass when he had been an idiot and distracted them both -- and that unforced error was the only reason these fuckers had even escaped the initial trap. It was only right that Alex took all the risk for round two, because he was the the one who fucked up in the first place to force it. With any luck, his idea would work as well as the initial one and they could move on with their lives without any extra broken bones to show for it.

Everything was fine and hunky dory, but as soon as a trining knife hit Alex in the throat. Miku froze for a nano second as she was shocked, suprised and appalled by this action the soldiers took. But that only lasted a nano second, because then she quickly snapped "Those mother FUCKERS!!! IM GONNA KILL THEM!!!" she angrily thought to herself. She just came to train her quirk a bit with nice people. But NOPE!! Those people were grade a douches!! They were soldiers their job was to serve and protect NOT TO CHUCK A KNIFE AT SOMEONE!!! Thats why she clenched her first and was really ready to just charge at them and deal with them personally But, what calmed her killing intent was Alex speaking to her, saying to keep her grass growing and to be ready for some sort of catch. Miku didnt understand what he meant, but she just rolled with it and followed Alex's lead Looking at Alex, he seemed to have a similar plan in mind as he rushed towards them and unleashed his quirk from the ground to create like several poles with small hands at the end that grabbed the soldiers by their clothes and equipment and lifted them up with the constructs.
"Oh. I guess this is what he meant by the catch" she thought to herself as she paid attention and waited for her cue. She then watched Alex and saw his maximum range was 10 meters, which just made her scratch her head metapphorically as to how did she get to be friggin number 4

Immediately after throwing up the pillars, the delinquent started coughing as the breath he wasn’t consciously he was aware he was holding finally came out in beleaguered gasps. His own body and what it did was inconsequential, so he let himself roll on his side from his back as he continued to cough as he pulled out a shield with what little matter he had left. It would hopefully be enough to protect against another knife strike, but if not he was just fucked and accepted that fact. The thin shield covered him for several seconds as he hacked his lungs out coughing loudly enough to be heard outside of that thin layer of shadow matter before he recovered enough to sit up and dissipate the cover so he could do the second part of his job and actually finish this by making sure they landed in the correct position for Miku to use her quirk to trap them for good.
Sitting and then standing up, red eyes flashed with determination as he looked up to see the smaller guy falling down as he had been the first to successfully break enough of the pillars to get loose. A quick look back to confirm where Miku was growing the grass and a split second check to see that the soldier’s trajectory would put him outside of his classmate’s little trap meant that some outside force was needed to nudge the soldier in the right direction. Thankfully, a giant pillar impacting his side at full force and speed was one such nudge that the delinquent was more than happy to give. He didn’t revel in violence, but what he did revel in was winning, and if violence led to winning he was more than happy to satisfy that condition to whatever extent was necessary.
The bigger guy fell down next, and he got the same treatment. In both cases, they slammed against the ground with a harsh and audible impact before being completely bound by the grass that Miku grew that quickly cocooned both of them to prevent them from reaching for the knives even if they had somehow kept a hold of them after the dual impacts of the shadow pillar and the ground. At least the smaller guy had definitely dropped his, though, because it glinted in the grass when Alex had glanced over in that direction. That was a good sign, because it meant that the fight was probably over… which was good, because if they got back up again somehow the student doubted that the same trick would work twice and he was out of bright ideas to win this one.
”Well, that about does it.” the delinquent coughed out, but this time not resting on his laurels and ripping all the shadow in his field of view to use in order to strengthen the cocoon around each soldier as they recovered from the impact so it was the quirks of both students that they would have to break in order to get out. If they had trouble breaking through just Miku’s quirk, they wouldn’t be able to withstand the American’s on top of hers when they were already pinned on the ground and unable to move. His own shadow cocoon was just extra insurance, really, and probably not even needed. The last thing he was going to do was underestimate the tenacity of the soldiers yet again, however, because the last time he had done that he had almost thrown the entire match in the process. No, he would hold the quirk until he made his point and the match was called off either by himself or by the Sergeant. If they refused to call it and attacked after they were let go, well, they were just assholes and that had no bearing on the conduct or honor of Yuuei High at that point and simply reflected poorly on the military.
The delinquent turned back to the Sergeant, but the cockiness and confidence from earlier was gone. It was replaced with a weariness and a respect that wasn’t present before. ”That should be enough to call it. If that knife was real, I’d probably be dead so depending on the rules y’all still likely won.” he admitted with a shrug with his tone holding no residual frustration or hatred. ”Thanks for setting this up. It’s not often I get to square off against fighters of this caliber.” he said as he released his quirk from the soldiers all at once, the inky black cocoon of matter dissipating like it was gas into the air as quickly as it came. While the delinquent was a vengeful and spiteful individual, as far as he was concerned the actions in a combat simulation had absolutely no bearing on how he would act outside of it. The soldiers were just trying to win, and trash talk was just part of the game as far as he was concerned. If this had been a real combat, he would be dead or very close to it and was a welcome wakeup call that he couldn’t focus entirely on offense. The bout had taught him something, and he wasn’t going to be angry at people who taught him something. His concentration could be broken in an instant, so he needed to get better at maintaining it regardless of the situation and needed some tools to ensure what happened today would never happen in an actual fight for both his own sake and for the sake of the people he would one day be tasked with protecting.
”Hey, Miku, let’s get out of here.” he called out as he started to walk off the field, his hands trying to get some of the dirt off of the back of his pants and shirt as he did so. The baseball slide made them absolutely filthy with dirt and bits of plant matter that got stuck to him, but it was a small price to pay for being able to claim at least a moral victory if nothing else in a very tough matchup against two very skilled fighters.

It was finally done, right? If so then Miku could hardly believe it. Even Alex helped to makeher grass cocoon stronger with his shadow. The two then turned to the Sergeant who was now more weary and respectful to the two. Alex, in her opinion spoke for the both of them. Miku nodded in agreement. Honestly, these people were not nice in her opinion and she just wanted to go away from them. Though for a first ay visit. It was still exciting. She was not gonna let a bunch of bad seeds ruin her trip
Alex then urged Miku to get out of here. Miku had to sadly admit defeat and leave. At least on the bright side she got to spend time with Alex now and try to get to know him. Plus with Akio not around, he was bound to behave more civil, right? "Ok" she said as she started to follow Alex. And so when the two got far enough from the soldiers Miku spoke again "Thank you for your help earlier. Though, how are you?" She had to ask, he bothered to help her and got injured kinda because of it. And even if he wasnt injured, he was dirty now

”Pretty good, I’m picking up little things from most of these little spars.” the delinquent replied thoughtfully. ”Most people would’ve given up after the initial attack, but the knife was a good learning point. I need better defense, because with just skin there one second of being distracted and bam it’s over.” he said, punching his own palm for emphasis to the point.
”It’s better to learn about gaps like that when it’s just training and not when you just die to a villain who’s a bit more determined than you thought, though, hey?” he mused aloud, ”Plus,” he paused and turned his red gaze back to Miku with a confident grin, ”It means that next year we come back and just shit stomp them because our quirks can get much better than their quirkless bodies can. That’s their peak, they will never get stronger. Not us, though. This is our beginning.”
He used his own shadow as a base to rip some matter out of to scrape some of the dirt off of his pants and clothes, but a large chunk of it was already mixed in with the fabric and thus impossible to get out with just a scrape. ”By this time next year, you’ll be making giant man eating plants like in the video games and I’ll be melting tanks with my quirk like Darkshine.” he predicted confidently, getting himself all hyped up again just thinking about it. He forced himself to calm down, though, because his body temperature was already noticeably lower than normal and he wasn’t ready to start training again until it normalized a bit more. It wasn’t nearly as bad as some longer training sessions, but he used the totality of his quirk multiple times and that was usually a quick and easy way to trigger the body temperature drop.
”One thing I’m really curious about, though, and while I don’t mean any offense…” he started, his tone suddenly becoming a lot more serious, probably more serious than the question warranted. ”But I have to ask, why Akio? If you don’t like me for being a cocky shit, then why is someone a bit taller with very similar tendencies suddenly okay? I’m just curious, since it seems to be batting below your league so to speak.” he added with a shrug, figuring that this might be one of the only times in his life he would get the opportunity to ask the burning question – how in the hell could anyone possibly see any positive traits in Akio of all people? It was absolutely and completely mind boggling to him that anyone would choose to date that oversized inferiority complex, let alone like him unless they had some severe mental issues.
Miku didn’t seem to need an immediate trip to the psychiatric ward, so he was curious to see what her logic was. Did she grow up in a battered home and think she was unlovable and not realize she was batting well below her ranking? It seemed weird, insane even. He wouldn’t understand even if she explained it to him, likely, but he had to at least know if there was a reason other than him being cheap and easy. It was kind of like food. Nobody was going to argue that most fast food was good, just that it was quick and convenient. He could see treating Akio like fast food, something quick and easy to take now and get a better meal when more time or money was acquired. That seemed disrespectful, even to him, but he could see the logic behind it. If she thought the fast food restaurant was an upscale wine and dine place, though, then either her perception was extremely skewed or she had knowledge that Alex didn’t.
