Sometimes, the library and the book shop were not enough for Nick. Sometimes, the call of the joystick was louder than the call of the novel.
Thus, he found himself in one of Tokyo’s many arcades. It was not one he had been to often; it was a bit rundown, to say the least. Half the letters on its sign were missing, the carpet had so much old food scrunched into it it was a biohazard and many of the machines did not work. That was saying nothing of the clientele. With their gang tattoos, scars and missing features, they were shadier than a damn forest.
There was only one reason Nick would ever set foot in this arcade above the others, and that was simple – it had Turbo Booster. The classic 1985 racing game was rarer than blue snow, though he supposed that was to be expected almost a century after its creation. He very much doubted this was an original cabinet, but even emulated the game was near-impossible to find. Original or not, the cabinet in front of him was one of gaming’s Holy Grails. How could he ever have passed up an opportunity to finally play it?
When he had first entered the arcade, he had taken note of how dodgy some of the other customers looked and had made a point to watch his back. As he grew more and more engaged in Turbo Booster, however, loudly cursing every time an NPC racer overtook him and leaning closer to the screen, the outside world faded away and he was left wide open to approach.

As the new kid entered, a couple of boys from a local high school quickly took notice. They didn't move from their spot, alcohol in hand with coins at the ready to be spent, but they definitely kept a close eye on him. They'd never seen him here before, and judging by the lack f any physical evidence of a decent quirk, he was most likely some quirkless loser looking for a place t hide out. This world wasn't meant for people like him, so even the shadows he sought to hide in would prove deadly.
"Think the boss'll want 'im?" The dark haired boy asked the one who had been playing the arcade game. The blonde looked up from the machine when asked, looking over towards Nick and rubbing the back of his neck.
"Yeah I guess. I was lookin fer a day off but I guess business is business. Maybe we'll get a raise if we get him hooked. " The blonde would note as he pushed himself up from his chair once Nick was sufficiently distracted. He checked inside his uniform pocket, withdrawing a small vie of purple liquid before putting it away once more, just making sure he actually had what he needed to bring the boy in.
The two made their way over to the Turbo Booster game, and the blond would lean on the back of his chair, while the dark haired boy moved to stand to Nicks left. The dark haired boy would lower his sunglasses, whistling as he looked at Nick's score when the NPC's started to beat him out.
"Woah, man you really suck at this." The dark haired boy instigated, quickly followed up by the blond.
"Yeah man, your gaming's about as flashy as the shitty quirk you have. Or, lack thereof. I guess that's what you get from a useless, Quirkless kid." The blonde would laugh, still leaning on the back of his chair, leaning in to the right so that Nick would feel trapped between the two high schoolers.
"You know you don't have to suck though kid. It's your lucky day, see, Kaito and I have a little something that can give you a quirk, make you better IRL, and you know, it'll most likely make you a better gamer because you won't suck as much." The dark haired boy would state casually, hands stuffed in the pockets of his pants now that he had replaced the sunglasses on his face.

Nick did not notice the two young men approach. He was so engrossed in his game he almost jumped when he heard them begin speaking, though he thankfully did not. That would have just been embarrassing.
He forgot everything the moment their words registered in his mind, however. His hands slowly fell away from the controls, causing his car to crash, but he did not care. He bared his teeth and stood, his back as straight as a poker. Every muscle in his body had never been tenser.
It took a Herculean effort not to take the two idiots apart right there in the arcade. How dare they. How dare they. They clearly did not know who they were dealing with. Ignorant, impudent, miserable, degenerate, worthless, moronic…
The two youths had seen Nick’s buttons and not pressed them so much as slammed them full force. The disc-shaped growth on his back itched and twitched like crazy, practically begging him to stop holding back. Perhaps he would have listened if he did not glimpse a security camera as he stood. That brought him back to reality enough for him to remember – this time, at least – that attacking civilians did not exactly look good for UA students.
Well, as long as they were seen doing so.
“Let’s take this outside,” he managed to say, somehow managing to keep his voice above a growl.
The darker-haired of the two youths shrugged his shoulders at that.
“Whatever, man,” he replied, evidently oblivious to the black waves of hatred Nick was giving out, or perhaps he did not care, thinking they were a result of calling Nick Quirkless and weak. Which they were, but not for the reasons the youth believed.
They left the arcade and moved into the dingy, ragged alleyway behind it. The darker-haired youth turned to Nick here and opened his mouth, but he never got chance to speak.
The disc on Nick’s back bulged and spilled out thick biological sludge that covered his entire body and solidified into his armoured hide. It hardened around his fist mere seconds before it collided with the darker-haired youth’s jaw, sending him flying back into the wall, a wicked stream of blood spewing from his mouth. Nick seized the blonde one as he was still reacting to his friend’s impromptu flight and brought him to a painful face-first meeting with a dumpster.
Nick towered over the two fools. They could not see his face, but it was one of absolute hatred and fury.
“Do I look Quirkless to you?” he snarled. "Does my Quirk look weak to you?"
Somewhere among all his rage, the mysterious vial did intrigue him, but teaching these two a lesson had taken priority over it.

Said quirkless kid packed one hell of a punch. The instant the two highschoolers were outside with him they paid the price for their arrogant words. The dark haired boy received a punch to the face that was enough to break his glasses and sent him flying back into a wall, and meanwhile Kaito was flung into the nearby dumpster. Thankfully Kaito had his own quirk that made this a relatively painless experience. The boy's body, much like Nicks, covered itself in a liquid, grey like substance that hardened around him, making the impact feel like nothing more than a playful tap.
"Whew. didn't feel that but to be able to throw me is pretty damn impressive! Heh! Looks like I was wrong kid, you do have a quirk! But without this, you'll never be good enough to beat me. " Kaito boasted as he lifted himself out of the bit, brushing off his shoulder and tossing off an old, rotten banana peel. He looked over to Nick with a wide smirk on his face, extending his arms to either way like he might want to suddenly hug the guy.
"That's surprised me! You look like a total wimp! But you know, this will still help make you stronger. It's a Quirk Enhancer, makes you twice as strong as you are now. I take it, and your weak ass throw felt like nothing. You want to make sure no one like me can call you a Quirkless wimp again? Then this is the way to go." He continued to boast.
Meanwhile, the security camera outside the arcade would silently zoom in on the ongoing situation. On the other side of the camera wasn't the owner of the arcade, and it wasn't even the police. Instead it was Thundershock's security officer, watching the situation unfold with interest. Looks like they might have a new catch, and it was best to know who had a quirk like that... and so he started to use face recognition to find out who Nick was and report it back to Thundershock if he was someone of any interest.

Of course these two had Quirks of their own. Nick had been too angry to really consider that. He was still angry. He did not care what this idiot had to say.
“If you take it, it can’t be very good. I’ll pass.”
He threw himself at the silver guy and launched a punch at his head. The silver guy simply stood there, smirking away. Nick’s fist connected with his face – and the guy did not even budge. Nick felt the impact all the way down his arm. He cried out and fell back slightly right as the silver guy acted, his own fist sending Nick almost into orbit. He felt himself fly up into the air and then the ground leapt up to meet him.
He lay there for what felt like an eternity, groaning as the world spun around him. Slowly, his blurry vision focused again and the silver guy’s mocking laughter permeated his ears.
“Sorry, were you trying to do something?” he heard him call. “I didn’t feel a thing, dude! That’s the magic of this stuff! Seriously, you’re throwing away the opportunity of a lifetime here.”
With a bit of effort, Nick straightened up again. His jaw felt as though it had been ripped right off. He could not form words.
Maybe the vial would have interested him. Under any other circumstances, he might have had questions about it. A lot of questions. But this bastard…
This bastard had pushed buttons that were not meant to be pushed. Buttons that brought back memories. Suddenly he was no longer there, no longer in his armoured state, but in a much smaller version of his body sprawled out on the floor of a training room. Above him loomed a bearded man with ram horns who glared down at him as though he were a filthy peasant before the emperor of the world.
“You’re weak as shit, boy,” the man sneered, raising his foot and then bringing it down on Nick’s back. “Don’t know what Fader was thinking with you. You’re not gonna change anything for anyone!”
Again the scenery shifted, this time to another room with punchbags and treadmills. He was bent over, clutching his stomach as its former contents lay pooled by his feet. He raised his weary eyes to see another two men looking at him with as much disgust as the previous man.
“Come on!” barked one of them. “You’ve got to hold your Quirk for longer!”
“Maybe his Quirk isn’t what we thought it was,” grumbled the other. “Or he’s not. If he can’t use it he’s no better than a Quirkless brat.”
Nick came back to reality.
It doesn’t matter how much you feel, he silently snarled.
He rushed his foe with a primal roar that did not even sound human. He managed to duck under the silver guy’s swing and exploded into a Gatling gun flurry of punches, each making an echoing clang as it collided with the guy’s body. He summoned every last ounce of strength and speed his Quirk afforded him and strained his body even harder to go beyond if he could. The effort to do such made his body feel as though it were ripping itself apart and he felt tears in his eyes from the pain. Still he hammered on, finally seeing cracks on his enemy’s skin.
Quirks like yours always break eventually!
His foe’s silver skin shattered and he crashed to the ground. Nick likewise collapsed. His armour peeled away to reveal his panting, beyond exhausted self. His hands must have been broken. He could not feel them at all.

Kaito couldn't help but gloat as he put a serious beat down on Nick, showing the brat exactly what it was his quirk, and this drug did. He was stronger and more resilient than Nick was and was glad to show it. However, the longer the two fought, the more stress the extra adrenaline put on his body and the weaker his armor would become, even if he didn't realize it. Eventually, Nick was able to punch right through the forming cracks, soon causing some serious damage to Kaito.
The fight felt like it lasted forever, when in truth it lasted maybe 2 or 3 minutes. 4 tops with the added boasting. It wasn't long though before all 3 boys were on the ground, 1 unconscious and the other two barely able to hang onto their own consciousnesses. That was when an older man appeared on scene dressed in properly fitted dark dress pants and clean black shoes. He wore a black muscle shirt with tattoo's coming up his right arm. His face, if Nick could make it out, was stern and chiseled into a well toned adult, a lightning bolt scar covering his right eye, though it didn't seem to stop him from keeping both eyes on Nick.
"Shin. Take those two inside before anyone notices. I'll take the new kid out of your hair. You can tell Kaito he's only getting half shipment for a half assed job" Thunder would be speaking into his cell phone, hanging it up before sparks of electricity began to dance around his hand, frying the electronic device to the point that it caught fire. He would drop it onto the ground, stepping down on it firmly before moving over to Nick, ensuring he was unconscious, and if not he would give him a hard hit to the jugular to knock him out.
With that Thunder would lift Nick off of the ground, throwing him onto his shoulder then walking into the arcade while stepping over the other two boys forms. He would take Chris into the back, opening the door to the supply closet, which led to another unmarked door that opened up into a stairwell that went down. The stairs went down so far that you couldn't see the bottom of them, at least not unless you had a source of light, which Thunder did. He would light a few lamps as he passed by firing small sparks into them, sparking them to life for just enough time to pass them.
The bottom of the staircase would open up into a large room with an electronically sealed door. Thunder entered his code and scanned his hand into the device and the door would open up. As it opened up, they would find themselves in a large underground city, massive mansions outlying this underground city while the more 'normal' looking buildings were pushed into the center. Thunder would take Nick towards one of the mansions.
As time passed and nick would start to wake, he would find himself on a comfortable cot covered in a silk blanket. His wounds would all be bandaged, and he would find himself without a shirt. Next to his bed there was a glass of water, a vial of the same liquid that Kaito had shown off, and a basin of water that had been used to clean him. In the room, Nick would be able to see an office desk with a few golden trinkets adorning it's desk. There were a few beautiful and pricey looking paintings n the wall. The mansion screamed wealth in every way. As for Thunder, he was currently standing at the entrance of the door, his back turned to Nick as he seemed to be discussing something with whoever was on the other side.

Nick was barely anything that could be called conscious. He was always left weakened when his Quirk deactivated, but this he was sure was the worst he had ever been. His vision kept fading to black and then back again. He could not move or even feel his body at all.
Footsteps. A man appeared over Nick, though it was difficult for Nick to identify anything about him in his current state beyond that he held a phone, which Nick saw him set aflame somehow and then drop and crush. Nick recognised the tactic because it was one he himself employed to communicate with Mother and her contacts, and probably Amadeus too once that ball got rolling. Nick tried to raise his head to get a good look at whoever this newcomer was, but then something struck him with the force of a meteor and everything went black.
The blackness stayed for some time. It took Nick some considerable effort to open his eyes again. It took even longer for the blurry shapes around him to focus into resembling real structures. His mouth tasted as though he had eaten nothing but raw sewage for the last week. His body must have been run over by a car, a lorry and then a tank, it hurt so much.
Slowly, awareness came crawling back to him and he realised what exactly his surroundings were. Fancy silk sheets, gaudy trinkets and portraits worth more than entire nations: his thoughts leapt to the one person he knew best who lived in such extravagance.
“Mother?”
He jolted upright, immediately regretting it as his muscles all cried out in agony. His heartbeat sped up to a lightning pace and his breaths became frantic and harsh. Mother would not have brought him back to England unless she believed he had failed. But he had not failed her!
He managed to scramble out of the cot, falling onto his hands and knees. He looked up with his teeth bared, but his eyes were full of panic like a cornered animal.
“Mother, where are you?”
In his shirtless state the growth on his back was fully visible. It twitched a few times before it managed to bulge out and the black sludge once more emerged – however it only made it to Nick’s shoulders before it receded again and the growth shrank. Nick promptly spewed blood all the way down his bare chest. “Fuck.”
No, no, this was not right. He had to think, he told himself, even though it was difficult. He was still beat up as though the wounds were fresh. He could not have been returned to England so fast.
So where the hell was he?

"You'll have the delivery ready by the deadline then?"
"Yes sir, everything is going according to your schedule, at this rate we will even be done early. Camera and news crews are all ready to jump into action."
"Good. Get the final shipment ready, I've got another little bird ready to deliver it." Thunder was just finishing up a conversation with the thin man across the door frame. The man would bow politely to Thunder before stepping backwards and leaving. To that, Thunder would close the door and start heading back to his desk when he head the rustle of the kid waking up. He stopped in his tracks and looked over with a bored expression as Nick stumbled, trying to get his bearings. He even asked for his mother, to which Thunder would just scoffed.
"I haven't even started with you, and you're already calling out for your mommy. For a U.A Hero kid, that's pretty pathetic." He would state with a sigh and shake of his head. He turned instead to face Nick, letting the boy see Thunder for everything he was. Thunder was a huge man with very defined muscles, his quirk easily guessed due to the hair and lightning shaped scar on his face. His clothes indicated that he was some kind of mobster? probably pretty high up with how sharply he was dressed and where it was he was holding Nick in the first place.
"Stop being a crybaby kid and sit up straight. There's water by your bed, get your head straight."

The man from the alleyway. With great effort, Nick managed to get onto his feet, staggering for a second but maintaining his ground. Anger flared within him at the man’s mocking words, yet he also felt a smirk flash across his face; this random thug-looking prick thought he was on Mother’s level? The smirk quickly dropped and was replaced with a baleful glare that could have withered the Amazon rainforest.
“Don’t flatter yourself,” he growled. “I’d much rather deal with you than her.”
Whoever this guy was. Between the blonde hair, lightning bolt-shaped scar and the little trick with the phone back in the alleyway, it was quite obvious he had an electricity Quirk. If only Nick’s Quirk had been more earthen-based.
Nick briefly glanced at the water, but did not move. He looked back at the other guy and tensed. He was a lot of things, stubborn and proud being among the most prominent. And he would die stubborn and proud, the way he had always been, if that was what it came to.
“So were those two the best you had?” he asked in the most flippant, uncaring tone he could muster. “Because it’s not great advertising. One of them went down straight away and the other couldn’t take me out. And I’m not even on your magical bullshit drug.”
He looked Thunder in the eyes as he spoke. Stubborn and proud. Maybe it helped a little that he had already been through this shit with Amadeus. He wondered if Amadeus knew this man? If he were even going to live to find out...

"Heh, they all start off like you ya know? Highstrung, hard headed, defiant~ Eventually they either give in, I kill them, or worse. So try to just behave yourself alright?" He asked of the boy as he instead walked over to his desk, picking up a little file folder with quite a few sheets inside of it. When he opened it up, he propped himself back against his desk, still facing Nick.
"Nick cross, 15 Years Old, U.A Highschool class 1-A. Looks like you're a brit too, pretty interesting stuff. " He started off, showing Nick that he knew a bit more about him than he would have probably liked. In truth, all of the information came from U.A's student database, not overly hard to collect if truth was spoken. Still, he liked to let those he was working with know that he always had a one up on them. Closing the folder, he would put it back on the desk, hand remaining atop the cover as he adressed Nick's next attempt at getting under his skin.
"Those two idiots are far from the best, but if I sent the military after a kid, that wouldn't look very good on me would it? Besides, as much as you deny it, those two were still more than enough to land you here with me, weren't they? We could of course argue how many strong Quirk Users are at my disposal, but I imagine you will chose to just disregard any information I give you. So, why don't we just jump straight to the reason I brought you here, hm?" Thunder suggested, still not making any aggressive motion towards Nick at all. He legitimately just seemed like he wanted to talk to the kid, not yet tossing his quirk around in a display of strength, or using more than a few words to indicate what kind f power it was that ThunderShock actually possessed.
"If I recall the anger in your voice when those two called your quirk weak, the conviction and certainty that you were the superior being... I believe this job will be of interest to you. How would you feel about culling the Quirkless and the weak, right here in this city?" He began, now waiting for Nick to answer...

For all Nick’s stubborn pride, he watched the man’s every movement with maximum intensity, anticipating an attack at any moment. He knew he was weakened and helpless, that he would be dead if that happened. Even so he puffed his chest out and did his best to remain standing tall. He did not ‘give in’, ever, and he was going to make that crystal clear. No matter how he really felt. At least this guy was not pointing a gun at his particulars…
His eyebrows lifted a little when the man ran off a list of facts about him. Evidently Yuuei needed to better secure their database. He was hardly surprised at their lack of efficiency with how much they had let him down, however.
He could not help but wonder how much else this guy knew. Amadeus had known about the Gifted Underground’s existence, though not Nick’s connection to it. Could this guy know more? Could he have ordered his cronies to target Nick specifically? Damn it, he should have thought when they started harassing him that they could have been after him on purpose. His anger had been too much for him to think straight.
His thoughts all came to a halt at the man’s final words to him. His head snapped up and he stared for a second or two, blinking. There was nothing else anyone could have said that would have gotten Nick’s full attention more. Rise above the Quirkless and the weak? Was that not Nick’s entire ambition?
“I’m listening,” he said.

" The... 'Hero' Students at U.A Highschool are nothing but a bad joke. The government is trying to establish a school for upcoming Hero's to establish a proper Hero society in Japan. Their plan is heavily flawed, and it's about time that they and the civilians see just how flawed this is. There's no place for a Hero society when all you are doing is trying to make the weak seem strong.
I have a plan underway that will reveal just how fragile U.A and hero's are, but I need someone, someone like you, to help me. We're created a drug known as QED, it's original purpose was to enhance one natural given Quirk to extreme strengths, but it failed. QED is the result of that failure, all this drug does is boost the body's adrenaline response and tricks your brain into thinking you are stronger than you are. Essentially, Heroin for quirkers, and most likely a death sentence for those without a quirk. I need you to take a secondary shipment of this drug beyond U.A's walls so my contact on the inside. Once you've done that, you are off the hook for the most part. Of course, if you were to guide those addicted to QED towards my contact, then I would give you a bonus for every person you brought to me.
Don't think I expect you to do this for free either. You will be paid 1,000,000 yen + a 10,000 yen bonus for every person you bring in. You won't ever have to take QED yourself, but if you do anything to jeopardise this plan? You'll have another 3 options. 1. I will kill you, 2. I will strip your quirk from you, it's actually pretty simple to do believe it or not, and leave you quirkless, and 3. You'll be my new quinea pig for any upcoming drug tests.
You don't have to worry about any of that though, will you?" Thunder would go into heavy detail about the plan and about the expectations of Nicks involvement. He also made it quite clear what would happen if Nick refused, or if he spilled the beans in any way while working for him. There really wasn't any wiggle room for negotiation as far as Thunder was concerned, so with his speech complete, he would wait to see what Nick had to say, or what questions he might have.

Nick had been trying his absolute hardest to maintain his composure despite the circumstances, but now it slipped. Visible bewilderment played across his features as his mind attempted to process this information.
Except his mind did not quite know how. There were too many conflicts. He could agree that Yuuei was flawed. Deeply. That there were many there who did not deserve to be and something had to be done to expose its numerous faults. The drug sounded like it would affect everyone the same way, however, strong or weak. And how would it affect them, exactly? He did not know how to feel, having never been confronted with anything even close to this before in his life.
Then there was the original idea behind the drug; to boost one’s Quirk to extreme levels. He wondered if that goal was still being worked towards. Again, though, he really had no idea how to feel about such a thing. It was unnatural. Artificial. He was a firm believer in natural strength – but then again was using one’s natural intelligence and taking advantage of one’s resources to create the drug not a use of strength? His mind ached trying and failing to figure everything out.
Nick knew none of his thoughts or feelings mattered much, though. He did not have a choice. The man was talking as though he did, but they both knew he did not. Nick utterly despised being made to feel as though he had no choice, no matter how fat the wad of cash being waved in his face. He grit his teeth and let out a long, angry, very audible growl.
“Fine,” was all he said.
He especially loathed being threatened. This prick would get what was coming to him sooner or later, that Nick silently vowed there and then.

"There's a good kid. You're smart." Thundershock smirked as he pushed himself off of his desk and headed back towards the door of his office, leaving Nick's file behind. He opened the door but didn't step out yet, instead holding it open for the boy.
"If you're feeling better, lets get started shall we? You've got a delivery to make." He would say simply, the faintest of smirks appearing on his lips, making the blond thunder Quirker look like the smug bastard he was. He knew that he had won, and he wasn't one to normally rub it in peoples faces... but this plan of his was moving along so nicely. With both drug shipments being sent into U.a, the only thing remaining would be to get his hands on the media. It wasn't a very difficult thing to do either, he just had to rile up the right crowd, most of which where in that very "Villains chat". They were honestly stupid if they didn't expect him to be up to something after being quiet for so long.

Nick wanted to tear this bastard’s smug smirk right off his face. His back itched and his hands twitched with eagerness, but he knew too well he would fail the attempt. He was in a beyond pathetic, miserable state. He was caked in his own blood and sweat, with probably some of that idiot from the alley’s blood in the mix for good measure, could barely keep himself upright and had never felt more helpless. All of this coupled with that infuriating Susamu whore manipulating him right into her clutches meant it had been an unbearable month for him. There was a part of him that wished to just collapse.
The rest of him was more defiant than that, however, and so he remained standing, furious crimson eyes fixed on this man, this thug, this kidnapper. It did not matter how large the sum he was being offered: this was a case of his pride, of his dignity, and both of those had been bombed from orbit and then some. He could have screamed. There was nothing he wanted less than to follow this man, who still had barely even told him his identity. Almost as though he did not believe Nick was worthy enough to know it – at least, that was how Nick saw it in his vulnerable condition.
And the worst part was Nick no longer knew deep down if he was worthy. He was supposed to have been a great warrior. A beacon for the Quirked people to follow. Not some jackass fighting game reject’s delivery boy. The fact that he could not figure out where he truly stood with this man’s plan to drug Yuuei made him feel even more helpless and thus, even more blazingly angry, which clouded his mind further and made it impossible for him to think about the implications of the drug at all. He was supposed to be better than this…
The most Nick could do was take that moment to finally go over to the water provided and clean himself up. Slowly. If this bastard was going to wait for him, then Nick was going to make him wait. It was the pettiest thing, but Nick was petty. Extremely so. When he was eventually done, he made sure to walk as slowly as possible without it being too noticeable over to the man and through the door.
“Let’s get on with this, then,” he said.
