A soft squeaking sound resounding through a room devoid of people but filled with equipment, followed by a faint "Huh." that overflowed with mild interest. And a lot of equipment it was; treadmills, punching bags, martial arts training targets, it had everything Kenshin could think of and more, though, to be honest, he was never one to think in great amounts about simple things such as this. Letting the door swing shut behind him, he walked through the room now no longer devoid of people, briefly inspecting and occasionally even admiring various pieces of machinery. The room was in top shape, every item was cleaned to near perfection, each metal surface staring back at him with his own face, however distorted it became due to their shape. He was impressed, at least mildly so, but reigned his enthusiasm in for now. After all, it was near the turn of the school year, so of course they'd make everything presentable now of all times. He'd hold his judgment for later on, when he started using this stuff regularly, but the outlook was good so far, and that was enough for him, at least for now. Then, at the end of his small meandering journey, like many times before now in places very similar to this, though none nearly as grand, he found himself in front of a punching bag, or rather, a group of them, a section.
A new sound could be heard throughout the room, a small chuckle emanating from its lone occupant. Kenshin was amused by how often he found himself before this particular piece of equipment no matter how many times he walked into somewhere for the first time. There was just something about the simplicity of it that resonated with him, the effectiveness of being able to kick the absolute shit out of something without worrying about being charged with either assault, murder, or vandalism. There may have been a few more charges floating around that sort of thing, but he wasn't an expert on the subject. Worst thing he had ever done off a mat or outside of a ring was hurt someone's feelings. He also scared a few people, but they deserved it so he didn't feel that bad. Reaching out, he delivered a solid tap with the back of his fingers, only getting a small thud in return for his actions. It was tough, that was good. Looked new as well, though whether that was because they replaced it to neaten the place up or if they just got wrecked that often from people hitting them with quirks, he didn't know. Looking to the side, however, he saw quite a few hanging in its general proximity were labeled with greater weights, probably designed with just those quirks in mind, something that Kenshin could appreciate. Some small part of him wanted to try one out, but he, like any responsible fighter, knew that bare hands thoroughly applying themselves to hard surfaces usually didn't end well, so he resisted the temptation. Giving the area one more sweeping look, he turned around, seeing if there was anything else that he felt like marveling at for a bit.

| “Will you actually hit it, or will you keep petting it?” The question could be heard from a weight lifting machine near the punching bags, a masculine voice with a playful lilt to it. A boy around Kenshin’s age was standing – standing!!! – on the machine, feet on the seat, hands holding onto the metal bars at the top for balance. He was wearing a simple black shirt and black jeans, but over it all, he wore and opened haori, black as well, accented and decorated by red wave-patterns at the edges. Long black hair was held up in a high ponytail, but it was reaching past his waist even like that. He seemed uncaring for the machine he was standing on, if his mischievous smile was any indication.
Shinme decided to visit the gym again, not to work up a sweat, but simply to look around and meet more students. Last time he was here, he was fortunate enough to acquaint himself with Amare, a boy who had already been a student here for a while, so hoping for a similarly fruitful experience, he headed here once again. At first he thought the place was completely empty and he messed up the timing yet again, but he could see a single person around. Jackpot, he thought, quietly approaching the person, though not quite caring if he was spotted. He would say hi either way.
He looked the new person up and down. Tall, well-built, pale, much like a vampire in those weird young adult books from the west. He idly wondered why he was meeting so many white-haired guys around school grounds, but the stacked away that line of thought for later. He had a person to get to know here, after all.
“I mean, there is nothing wrong with petting it, everyone has their own preferences after all” a grin. “It was just new.” He tilted his head, still holding the metal bar while leaning forward just slightly. “Last time I was here, one of those were almost destroyed by the flurry of punches it got, I tell you, this guy went ham on it. And won. He was a champion.” He swayed to one side then the other, keeping himself in constant motion as if staying still would give him physical pain. He leaned his chin against his arm that was holding onto the machine. “Did you come here just to look around? That’s fine too, I’m kinda the same.” Even if he got no answers, it seemed like he would keep on asking questions without a worry. “By the way, I am Shinme. It’s very nice to meet you.”

For a moderate length of time, Kenshin just stared at them, unblinkingly. They seemed kind of strange, if he was being honest. For starters, people usually announced themselves before getting within that distance of another, especially if their goal were to initiate a conversation. On top of that, quite literally, they were standing on a piece of equipment that wasn't designed for such, which he thought was at least somewhat disrespectful. He supposed it'd matter more for workout enthusiasts such as himself, but in general it was a bad idea to stand on things not meant to be stood on, especially if those things weren't yours, and he was pretty sure many people would agree with him, but then again, he probably didn't know enough people to get statistically significant feedback on the matter. It was during this train of thought that he realized his gaze had gradually shifted from the person addressing him to the machine they were standing on, which he corrected so as not to appear rude. He also realized this person had been talking to him for the past minute, so he stared unblinkingly once more as he replayed the conversation in his head so that he actually registered it. He also just now noted that they were dressed kind of weirdly, though he supposed his own attire wasn't exactly normal, even if certainly less strange.
He was dressed in worn blue jeans and a currently zipped black leather jacket, which was how he usually found himself dressed outside of school and the gym he frequented. His hood was down, as he was inside and didn't want to be rude, of course, but he usually kept it down outside anyway, as with it up his appearance went from punk to potential criminal, which he wanted to avoid because people tended to be annoying whenever they felt that you looked suspicious. Talking about suspicious, or, well, thinking about suspicious, he should probably say something instead of staring like a weird person. "No." came his rather short response before he briefly tilted his head to indicate the punching bag near him. "I didn't bring gloves with me and I'd rather not damage my hands. I also don't tend to go around punching things that aren't mine. And yeah, I'm just scoping the-" Yeah, cus that didn't sound suspicious at all. Good going there, real good. "-...looking around. My name's Dwight, and likewise."

| Although the other’s stare was weird, it wasn’t unnerving for Shinme. He had met with weirdos and had his fair share of odd first meetings, so such stares were tolerated well. He hadn’t yet seen enough to notice the boy wasn’t blinking at all.
“What are you staring at? Do you like my looks?” He pointed at his own face with a finger. “Wouldn’t be the first one.” His tone was teasing, unbothered, words used to shake his conversation partner out of whatever daze he found himself in while staring. It usually worked, and then the people would continue talking, although significantly more embarrassed, which Shinme didn’t mind either.
Just like him, this guy wasn’t wearing the school’s uniform, or anything resembling it, which in itself would be odd normally, if Shinme himself didn’t opt out of wearing it sometimes. Instead, he focused on the words of the other once he actually started talking. Which were, admittedly, also a tiny bit suspicious, but Shinme truly wasn’t one to judge. He stayed on the weight lifting machine, swinging one leg down in the air next to the seat, still holding onto the metal bar. It seemed he was completely uncaring for the stare he got for it from the stranger.
“Uh-huh.” He hummed in response when the boy mentioned he was just looking around, catching the change mid-sentence, but yet again, not commenting more on it. “Dwight?” He tried out the word, repeating it two more times to make sure he would pronounce it more or less right. He completely forgone any kind of Japanese customs by omitting the honorifics usually used with names. “Dwight, Dwight. That’s definitely not a Japanese name, yet you are talking pretty fluently.” As far as he could tell, Dwight’s words were completely understandable. “Are you a foreigner? Must have been living here for a while if you talk this well.” Considering Dwight didn’t seem that much older, white hair or not, Shinme could only figure that.
“By the way,” he pointed towards a backroom at the other side of the mirrors lining the wall, “there are boxing gloves in there, if you decide to go for some punching. Not everyone brings their own gear, so they have a few spare things there. And, well, these things are here to punch, so there is no harm to it.” Shinme listed counter-points for Dwight, but he did not expect the other to actually start practicing here either way. He just felt better after clearing the points up.
“Are you new?” He shifted his body weight and pulled his legs up just slightly, testing the hold of the metal bar, seeing if it would keep his weight or not. His feet tapped lightly back on the seat after testing it, resuming his previous stance. Shinme didn’t stop moving even for a moment while talking. “Most people wear their uniform or track suits around school grounds, except the new ones.” He remembered neither Lewis nor Shigero had worn uniforms when he met them, and both of them turned out to be fresh arrivals. He had to wonder if this guy was the same.

Deciding to completely ignore their first comment, Kenshin would spare a short look towards the room that they pointed to, just now noticing it. He supposed it was nice to keep spares on hand for the various people who may come unprepared, but there was also the problem of... sanitation. He didn't know if it was the best choice to share exercise equipment, which you tended to sweat in, at least if you weren't him and actually did sweat, as said equipment, after it has been passed around a few times, tended not to be the cleanest of things. That was, however, unless they were cleaned daily and people were smart enough not to reuse them before then. One may think it strange that someone such as himself, who didn't have to really worry about it because of his membrane, would care so much about the cleanliness of equipment, and then he would call that person stupid. Membrane or not, it was still gross to use something covered in sweat, be it his own or especially someone else's. However, as clean as the equipment may or may not be, there were still some problems with him using it, for now, or at all.
Kenshin would turn towards Shinme again, resuming his unblinking gaze upon its previous target. "I get that, but I still feel weird about playing around with stuff that isn't mine, whether or not something is designed for a particular activity." He would rub the back of his neck while briefly glancing back at the punching bag next to him, sporting the slightest bit of a frown before returning to his previous posture. "Aside from that, I also don't really... box. I use a form of mixed martial arts and large gloves would just get in the way. That and I've had some slip off of my hands before, which is somewhat annoying. I have a pair of custom workout gloves I use instead, but I don't have them with me right now. And yeah, you could say I'm new, or rather, I will be new." He'd lazily sweep an arm out to gesture at the room around him, following it with his gaze as he did so. "I came to check the place out, as I heard you were allowed to do. I'm enrolled but not attending yet. I do have a uniform at home already, but I saw no reason to wear it just yet." His eyes would widen slightly, just having remembered something. "Oh, yeah, and I get that occasionally. I was born here, but my dad is from the States."

| “Okay, I get it, I get it!” It wasn’t up to Shinme to force people to use the gym equipment anyway, so if this Dwight fellow was really against it, then so be it. However, his next few words make Shinme perk up with interest.
“Mixed martial art?” He almost completely ignored what was said after, and circled the conversation back to this topic. “Waitwaitwait, so did you learn a bunch of different marital arts and you can use them all?” As someone brought up in a half-traditional Asian family, Shinme had his fair share of martial arts training, some of it he doesn’t use on purpose, or ignores altogether. So meeting with someone who would know and use various martial arts was, honestly, pretty exciting. “If not boxing, then what do you use, mostly? I have met two people here who prefer boxing, so it’s almost odd to meet someone different. Do you know aikido? Or krav maga? Or kickboxing? You totally look like someone into kickboxing.” Though, exactly how such people looked like, remained a mystery, but apparently, kickboxers looked like Dwight.
Shinme hopped down from the equipment finally, patting the seat a few times to sweep off any remaining dirt then turned back to this new person. “So you will start school in April? I am the same.” He pointed between them, as if indicating their similarity. And then Dwight mentioned his dad, and Shinme had to admit it was pretty obvious the boy had ancestors from the west. With his looks and build, he looked decidedly more European, or in this case, American. “Oh, so you are half-Japanese! That explains a lot. Like, the light hair and leather jacket. Actually, you are the third white-haired person I met in the few weeks I have been here, and neither of them were fully Japanese, if at all. You would think everyone outside of Asia has white hair.”
He skipped closer. The other was only slightly taller than him, probably the same height as Yukio was. Thinking back to the karaoke night, he had the urge to call the volleyball player on the phone for a chat, but any such need would have to wait until he wasn’t preoccupied by getting acquainted with a new student. And a handsome one at that. So Dwight was not that much bigger, but that hairstyle made him look taller, somewhat. Shinme felt the unconscious need to straighten his back to seem taller. Almost. “So hey, what class will you be in? You already did your paperwork, right? You wouldn’t be allowed to roam the school grounds if you didn’t.”

Maintaining his unblinking gaze, Kenshin would inhale deeply through his nose and out through his mouth, calculating how to respond without seeming too dramatic. Most probably unbeknownst to them, Shinme had committed a grave error, one which Kenshin felt an intense urge to correct as soon as possible, though he also wanted to do so in such a way that he didn't come off as an ass. To be honest, he had zoned out after their questions about whatever martial arts he used, standing there with a blank expression as he ran simulations of how to properly explain how he felt about the subject. Eventually, when Shinme would begin approaching him, Kenshin would cut them off not mid-sentence, but before they could begin questioning him about his paperwork. Holding up a hand in as polite a manner as possible, he'd then gesture for them to give him a moment before turning around and holding his hands to his hips. After a few more seconds of thought, he'd turn back around towards them, an intensity in his expression not present before. He didn't necessarily look angry, but he was now definitely serious, the earlier neutrality having faded from his face as well as the rest of his body. Starting with a point in their direction, he'd launch into a somewhat intense explanation, enthusiastic gestures included.
"Okay, so, you don't seem very experienced in the subject so I won't laugh at you. First, Aikido is only good on a practice mat. The techniques it teaches completely fail when put to use in almost any other scenario. It's more an art form than an actual martial practice. Kickboxing, while it can be used, is still only good in a fighting ring, with rules. The same goes for Boxing. They're designed for structured competition, usually almost entirely designed around them, and aren't very useful for much else unless your opponent is an incompetent thug." Calming down a bit, Kenshin would nervously rub the back of his neck in a vaguely apologetic manner before crossing his arms and relaxing his posture a bit. "As for my own practice, I draw from several sources for my own style. I lean towards relying on heavy strikes, and for those I pull mostly from Muay Thai and Karate, and I guess the former can be considered vaguely similar to kickboxing. For grapples, locks, and throws, I pull from general Kung Fu, Baguazhang, and Judo, the last of which is like Aikido but actually practical. I also draw from the former two of those for a lot of my defense and evasive movements. Krav Maga is practical, but most actual martial artists don't use it. It can be learned in a year and it's more designed for police use, or for a civilian in a life or death situation. It involves a lot of finger breaking, crotch kicking, eye poking, that kind of stuff. If you ever want to learn actual martial arts, I can definitely give you some pointers on what to do."

| Oh, he stepped on a sore spot. That happened quite often with him, so he noticed it instantly. Not that Dwight was hiding it at all, stopping Shinme’s words with a hand to give him time to properly digest what he heard, and form a response. Shinme tilted his head to the side in inquiry, hair falling forward at his waist. His hands were clasped together at his back while he waited for the dam to break and the berating to come. Where exactly he made a blunder, he wasn’t yet sure, but seeing how the other’s expression changed just barely when he mentioned martial arts, it was probably about that.
And then it came, the hands-on-hips kind of indoctrination, the serious face as if Shinme wasn’t aware of the workings of the world, as if he was just a naïve child. It wasn’t so different from what his Chinese relatives were doing when they questioned his sincerity, when he questioned their sincerity. It was all familiar, warm in a strange way, and for that, instead of getting annoyed, he was becoming more interested to listen.
Shinme had to admit he didn’t look like he was experienced in the subject, as Dwight said, so he didn’t fault him for assuming as such. Unassuming looks earned him quite a lot of information on the other party though, so he wasn’t even against it either. If all it took to make someone talk about their interest was to play dumb, he wouldn’t mind doing that. Even if it was only an accident this time, and not at all an intentional trick to gauge Dwight’s knowledge on the matter.
His interest was real as he nodded and watched attentively. He actually knew little about the martial arts he blurted out the names of. He himself learned a variety of kung fu styles, internal and external, armed and unarmed, as they mixed well with his quirk. He knew the basics, with the privilege of choice, as he wasn’t yet dedicated to one style, it was, after all, quite hard to mix certain styles together without the proper theories. At least now he knew the cons of aikido and kickboxing, even though he knew nothing else about them. “Oooooh, I see, I see!” He said when Dwight changed his posture, now relaxing, clearly unburdened by the first steam of annoyance. Shinme was relieved. He perked up when familiar martial arts were mentioned, Muay Thai, Kung fu and Baguazhang that Shinme mostly knew as Pakua Chang courtesy of one of his cousins. He wasn’t sure if Dwight noticed he knew of these ones, but if he did, it didn’t stop him from continuing his explanation.
When there was an offer, Shinme didn’t hesitate for a moment. “Look at me, I am a twig, do you think I would really be able to learn any martial art?” He joked, wiggling his noodle arms around comically. Going with the image of a youth with zero fighting capability was fun, so long as he wasn’t cornered. “I wouldn’t mind watching you practice though! I’m sure you have some sets you go through to practice your moves, or some logic how you mix moves from different martial arts. Right?”
