Yukio Kami & Shinme Kagaya The wind sings at night
"Kami-san, there's not much movement around here again tonight, is it?", the female asked, not only a little bored but also with a slight hint of teasing. "Isn't that a good thing?", Yukio replied, not giving much thought to the potential ramification of such answer. "Depends on what we do with this free time...", the tease was now noticeably stronger than the sense of boredom. "I can go ahead and clean some of the rooms for you then, that way you can head home earlier and get some rest", he said as he picked up a broom, the intention of one year older co-worker going right through his head - whether that was intentional or not was left for interpretation. "I hate you", she said after exhaling in disappointment, "Give me that."Taking the broom from the boy, the slightly smaller girl tied her long brown hair in a ponytail and got to work, leaving Yukio at the reception desk by himself. It was around two in the morning and it had been almost a year since he was working part-time at the Black Cat, a small karaoke place in the seventh floor of a building located one of the many alleways in Akihabara. It gave for some good moments that he came to enjoy in his routine: meeting the girls that worked at the maid café on the fourth floor, grabbing food at the restaurant in the first, browsing some manga in the bookstore of the third... and the job itself was something he also didn't mind at all, with the exception being the rare night where a group held a karaoke party and, well... cleaning up vomit isn't the best way to spend the night when you then have to go to school at eight in the morning. Either way, it paid well for what he needed and that was enough. As for the Black Cat itself it wasn't nothing extraordinary - only ten rooms, with only one being large enough for big groups. The only thing that really surprised a lot of people is that it wasn't part of a franchise, but was actually unique and independently owned. How was it able to keep itself open despite the relatively low movement? Yukio had no idea... and he also thought it was best to not ask his boss about it. With Keiko on cleaning duties, the volleyball player was at the reception desk, scrolling through his phone while counting the minutes to 4am, the time he had to leave. It didn't seem nobody would be showing up. Right? Notes: Small intro! Words: 428 Tags: Shinme Kagaya

| “Mom, how do you read this word?” A no more than ten years old boy turned toward her mother. He situated himself at the dining table with a book and a digital dictionary to help in his reading. His mother stood across him past the island bar in the kitchen, kneading dough for the wontons she would make as a side dish for their dinner. She looked up at her son, and nodded.
“Bring the book here, dear?” The boy stood up and did as was asked, pointing at the characters he was unable to decipher. It was a Chinese book, the boy learning the other half of his heritage quickly, but certain words and expression that were rarely used still hindered him. “Did the dictionary not say anything about it?”
“I wanted to ask you first,” he admitted, because the dictionary was dry, and strict, while his mother was understanding and patient.
“I see,” she smiled. “That may be for the better. This is a rather complicated word. It is read as “zhiyin”, and has the characters for “knowing” and “tune”.” He boy turned the book back to him to look at the letters and familiarize himself with them. “That book is a hard read for you, isn’t it? The Garden of Persuasions is tricky even for older people to read. It is old, and uses ancient phrases.”
“Maybe. But it is interesting.” He liked the challenge, liked that he didn’t know most of the words. It was like a treasure hunt, and he felt like he could learn more from this than from his textbooks.
“The tale of Boyagi and Zhong Ziqi...” She quieted down, glancing at her son with a new kind of wonder. “Can you guess what exactly “zhiyin” means if you read those characters out?”
The boy only thought for a short while, because he already knew the logic behind the letters. “The one who knows the tune?”
His mother nodded. “Yes. It is a beautiful phrase. It is often translated in a simplified fashion as a lifelong confidant, or a soulmate.” She smiled. “But “zhiyin” means so, so much more than that...”
~~~~~
It was already two in the morning, and Shinme had absolutely nothing to do out on the streets, but yet there he was, resolutely walking towards his destination. He stayed up late at home, getting ready some of the final paperwork and arrangements of his eventual enroll to U.A., but soon enough he got bored with it all. At odd times, he had the urge to sing, to follow a tune and loose himself in the music. And at even odder times, he wanted to do that while holding a microphone, even a toy one, and as strange as it was, he did not own one at home... A problem he will have to remedy soon if he didn’t want to visit a karaoke place every time the urge surfaced.
Lucky for him, Akihabara was awake all night, especially during the night, so whatever he wanted, he could do it here.
He strolled through the floors in his casual clothing. He wore black chinos with a pair of sneakers. A loose, soft-brown colored knitted turtleneck was hugging his form, over it he wore a black velvet coat, equally baggy and long, reaching his knee. It was decorated with red accents. His hair was up in a high-ponytail, held firmly by a scrunchie and flavored by an extra ribbon that flowed through the length of his strands past his waist. He only had a black tote-bag with him, with the colorful text on its front that read “Soulmate”. It contained everything he would need from his valet, to his cellphone, pass and a bottle of water for the road.
He didn’t intend to stay long. He would only come to sing a few songs, satisfy his need for noise and attention, to get the adrenaline from letting loose his voice, then go home and sleep. His plans weren’t always working, and that largely depended on the company he managed to find, if at all.
He shook his head as he neared the door to the karaoke place on the seventh floor of the establishment, hair flowing freely behind him. Right, that wasn’t quite important right now. Looking at the nametable, he made sure he was at the right place before walking in. The Black Cat was recommended to him by a local group of teens he met at an audition. They said it was small, but comfy. He wasn’t sure how a karaoke place could be considered “comfy”, but whatever, at the worst case scenario he will never again show up.
He stepped in, confident and curious, and immediately spotted the reception with someone behind it. He walked up to the guy. There was a short moment when he wasn’t sure what to say, just a beat of his heart, before he beamed his most convincing smile, charm on the maximum.
“Hey there, pleasant night to you! Do you have a free room I can use for an hour? I don’t have a reservation, but I was hoping something could be arranged.” That sounded right for a start. While waiting for an answer, he would check who this diligent night-worker was. He was young as well, maybe the same age as himself. But not nearly as soft looking, as Shinme currently was.
Yukio had no idea yet that a storm arrived at his workplace.
Yukio Kami & Shinme Kagaya The Wind Sings At Night
Someone came in. That was... surprising. Maybe the Black Cat wasn't just a money laundry business. Not that it really was. Or was it? Keiko loved to gossip about it. And yes, only Keiko because, as weird as it was, she and Yukio were the only ones that worked there. Was the place even open when they weren't on shift? "Welcome!", the boy said as he bowed as an automatic response, not even looking at the guest yet. And then, as he rose back into a straight posture, he looked at him. 'Pretty' was the first word that came to mind. A long-hair neatly tied up, a soft-face of someone who hadn't yet worked a day in his life, fancy clothes that Yukio most likely couldn't even afford. Thus, Yukio thought of a second word: 'Untouchable'. A charm he couldn't have, a comfort he couldn't reach, an aura he didn't have. And finally, as the guest spoke for the first time, a last word: 'Chaos'. This one not based on anything that Yukio saw or heard, but simply on what he just felt. "Good night", he began by replying, "Yes, we have rooms available, let me just call for my co-worker". "Keiko is going to hate him, she probably just cleaned all of the individual rooms", he thought to himself at the same time. "Hirose-san, come here, please!", he sightly raised his voice calling for her. Shortly after, she appeared and... grabbed Shinme by the arm, bringing herself really close to him. "Kami-san, you brought a cute friend!""He's n-""Or boyfriend? Is that why you always reject me?""No, it's not that at a-""He's so adorable", she continued, now trying to grab a bit of Shinme's cheek with her fingers, "How do you keep your hair so well treated?", she curiously asked. Meanwhile, in the black and orange uniform of the Black Cat, standing behind the reception, Yukio looked at the two. "What... is happening?"Notes: Shinme gets an unexpected partner in crime! | “Welcome!”
There was a pause, a moment where Shinme was just staring at the person welcoming him to the place, when he rose and looked at him, after Shinme greeted him and said his piece. His thoughts were rushing and he had trouble pulling in the reins, so his fingers played with the strap of his tote-bag to ground himself. Something was disorienting him, like when he used his quirk too much and it became harder to take a breath.
“...Thank you so much!” There was his voice, replying when the receptionist called for his co-worker. The stranger was just slightly taller than him, but definitely built better. He could see it from how the uniform shirt fell on his shoulders, but it was his eyes that threw Shinme for a loop.
He jolted from the sudden weight that latched onto his arm, but quickly calmed when he saw it was just a young girl in the same uniform – the co-worker, he assumed – that got a hold of him. He could feel her body-heat on the whole length of his arm.
He watched the exchange, if he could even call it that, with a kind of amusement on his face. He was assumed first a friend, then a boyfriend, and there were a few moments where he just wanted to go along with the joke and make everyone’s lives harder, but then the possibility of getting a room to sing in might get slightly slimmer. Priorities, priorities, but he still wanted to be somewhat mischievous. In the end, he just decided not to deny anything, and answer the questions instead.
The cheek-pinching was tolerated, he even smiled brightly to make it easier. “Thank you! You are very cute yourself. If you look this pretty in working clothes, I can only imagine you in a dress.” It was far from flirting and closer to one pretty person complimenting another upon meeting. “Oh, don’t even ask! It is honestly way too much work, but I think it is worth it.” He pulled his hair to his front, let it fall down his chest. “It is all thanks to the conditioner.” He stage-whispered in a confidential tone as if telling a secret.
He chanced a glance at the receptionist, his eyes shining from his bright smile. There was no apology in his expression, but upon seeing the utter confusion in the other’s eyes – honestly, the guy’s face was nearly blank, but his eyes were telling! – his smile became softer.
“Hirose-san, right?” He asked, because he remembered catching her name as they called each other. He would not double-check Kami-san’s name, because it was still somewhat funny to go along with the boyfriend route. “Can I have a room for one hour?” He grew needlessly polite. He was the customer after all, so he could be as demanding as he wished either way. “Do you serve soft drinks? Orange juice sounds lovely! I am going to sing my heart out. Also.” He chanced a pleading glance at Kami-san, charm on the maximum. His mischief showing. “I would like you to join me and sing a duet with me. I am alone tonight after all, and that is kinda sad, don’t you think?” He had the audacity to wink at the end of the sentence, and then, to get as much backup as possible, he turned back to Hirose-san. “Is that alright?”
Hirose-san would certainly not be against that, considering her previous actions. And Shinme will get to be in a room with a handsome guy. It is honestly a winning situation. To further empathize his wishes, he placed his free hand on the receptions desk softly, and leaned forward toward Kami-san. “Just for an hour?”
Yukio Kami & Shinme Kagaya The Wind Sings at Night
They were whispering about hair. Great. Knowing Keiko like he did, Yukio was sure that the girl had just made a new best friend or found a potential new love interest, especially with him having equally stroked her already big enough ego and even making her blush (the fact that his intention clearly wasn't that not mattering). The implications of that friendship were... terrifying - such would not take long to be proven right. "Of course, I just cleaned one up just for you!", she replied extremely happy to Shinme's will to have a room to sing in. "Any other person and she would've not reacted like that at all...", thought the volleyball player. But then the other boy turned to him, a reminder to Yukio himself that he was also part of this entire interaction. He just talked about the orange juice, so he would most likely going to ask for it to be brought to him, correct? Or maybe just ask for the price of the single hour and pay there and not when on his way out. Yes, both reasonable options. Instead... "Sing... with you?", he repeated and asked, mostly to himself as to make sure he processed the request correctly. While Yukio's confusion clearly showed, Keiko's utter joy was also more than evident when the client looked to her for authorization. Her mind was running rampant with the possibilites, like this was everything she had hoped for in her still short seventeen years of life. "This is like all those dramas... A soft-charming loving boy on one side, a distant yet magnetizing one on the other... They can either love each other or they can love me... I... I... I don't deserve this... It's... It's too much...""Hirose-san, are you alright?", Yukio asked the girl instead of replying to Shinme, who was now closer to him by having leaned forward gainst the desk. It wasn't that he was ignoring the extravagant client, not at all. And, well, the client himself would surely notice this too and not take it to heart. The reason? After Shinme's proposal to Yukio, the third-party - Keiko - got extremely red. And silent. And sweaty. It was... concerning, to say the least. The last time he had seen her any close to this state was when she conviced him to go shopping with her and it turned out to be a trap for Yukio to go with her to an event of her favorite j-pop group. "K-Keiko?", he treated her by her first name as he got slightly more worried. And then, like she just started breathing again, all the redness disappeared and she let go of Shinme with the quickness of an arrow getting shot, taking a few step backwards by doing so. "It's r-really hot in here, isn't it, K-Kami-san?", she was clearly flustered and she was breathing fast. "No, it's really n-""B-but yes, you two go sing, y-you should totally do that" - she said directed to Shinme, continuing while slowly walking backwards into the staff room - "R-Room 3, g-go to Room 3, please, I-I need t-to go get some rest, yeah, I'll do that...""Are you sure th-""Bye!", she yelled and turned her back to both boys and darted off straight into the room, closing the door behind her with a loud bang. Now that wasn't how he was expecting the rest of the dart to turn out just a few minutes ago. "She'll be fine", he reassured the other boy, somewhat trying to break the possible silence after that whole spectactle, Singing, right?, he questioned, making sure that was still what the client wanted to do. He didn't mind doing that at all. It was just... weird? Whatever. Keiko would be super embarassed after all that and, even if never said it, Yukio liked her a lot, so all he could do was make himself even more of a fool by singing, with the hopes that such made the other boy forget what just happened. | Shinme could easily see that Hirose-san was a little ray of sunshine, as apparent by her cheerful responses and open expression. And lucky enough, she also seemed to be perfect in customer service, because – as far as Shinme could tell – she immediately offered a freshly cleaned room for him. Such consideration! It is a shame she had taken a liking to Shinme in a way he couldn’t reciprocate.
His attention was more on the other person though, on Kami-san – dang, he really needed to figure out his given name – to see how he would react to the proposition. It was with not a little amount of surprise and confusion, and Shinme thought that was understandable. Even he thought it was a very random idea, but one he often implemented if he was alone, and met with a handsome guy. He was shameless like that. He nodded when the other boy asked back, even though it was probably a rhetorical question, but he figured and emphasis wouldn’t hurt.
It was Hirose-san’s rambling that made him turn back to her. Seemed like his resumé was growing with the title of “soft-charming loving boy” this time. Yumi already stuck him with two others – “kinda nice, if a little out of the blue”, and “obnoxious pretty boy” –, when they were auditioning for that spring line as models, but this was certainly a new and appreciated mention. Right now, it was preferable to be soft rather than obnoxious, but the night was still somewhat young. He had just arrived, after all, there is still time to trample his current image.
In either case, she was growing quiet suddenly, and a bit too red in the face. Shinme was not oblivious to why she was acting that way, and felt equally bad and mischievous from it. Bad, because he will potentially hurt her feelings by rejecting her, and mischievous, because he can totally play around with that other fantasy she has...
He let the co-workers have their conversation without butting in. Once he had his arm back to himself, he placed both hands on the reception desk in waiting. He agreed it wasn’t quite as hot in here as Keiko – he had learned her name at least – felt. He also had a few ideas why she felt so hot, and smiled knowingly. So far, Shinme met two types of girls: one that thought he was good-looking, and wanted him for herself, and one that also thought him good-looking, but wanted him to get together with other boys. But Keiko? She seemed to be both.
He glanced at Kami-san as he was trying to talk to her before she disappeared into the staff room. Distant yet magnetizing, huh? He could definitely see it, but also the consideration with which he pulled back from that distance out of worry for his co-worker. It was honestly charming, and Shinme couldn’t help but look forward to the one hour he will spend at Black Cat.
“That’s good to hear.” He said in response to the reassurance, honest, because even though he was aware of her reasons, he was still worried about her well-being. “I thought she was getting a heart-attack there.” He tilted his head to the side, touching his chin to his raised shoulder, looking straight at Kami-san that way. “Singing, yep.” That was still the plan, and Shinme was looking more and more forward to that.
“By the way, Kami-san?” He straightened up, and bowed his head just a little, peering up. “It is nice to meet you. My name is Shinme. I guess not every customer introduces themselves to you. But since you are going to sing with me, I thought it was only right.” His smile was reaching his eyes as he pushed his hair back behind him with a flick of his wrist. There were various reasons why he didn’t give out his family name. He was already running his public image as “Xinme”, as it was a unique and pronounced the same way his real name was, so if someone heard him sing as a runner-up in talent shows, they would know it. Other than that, his father’s family name was too closely associated with politics, and he wished to have nothing to do with that. And, really, this also meant he will have to be called by his given name. “She said room 3, right? Come on, let’s go, let’s go.” Getting courageous, he would try to grab onto Yukio’s wrist with both hands, swiftly, but gently so he could get free any time. He would tug him towards the rooms, walking backwards. “Show me the way?” Shinme's hand was warm; it was partially covered by his knitted pullover that peeked out from under his coat.
“Is she usually like this? Hirose-san, I mean.” He asked, because somewhere deep he was still worried, and considering Yukio’s worry, he must have cared as well. “Will she really be alright? Maybe checking up on her would be a good idea.” A pause. He took a sudden breath, as if something just occurred to him. “Oh, right. I will pay for the room and everything else before I leave. I might stay a little longer, because I’m not sure one hour will be enough for me. How long are you open? I guess I couldn’t spend the whole night here...”
There it was, Shinme and his voice, the never-ending flow of words. Once he was allowed to talk and ask questions, he would continuously do so like a spring breeze. But he was careful to listen, and if Yukio decided to talk, he would wait to finish and wouldn’t interrupt him.
Yukio Kami & Shinme Kagaya The Wind Sings At Night
"Ah, right", he let out as the other boy introduced himself, "Kami Yukio, nice to meet you", he bowed as any other of his countrymen would traditionally do when meeting someone for the first time. He moved himself away from behind the counter in order to stand on the same side as the customer. "Shinme...", he repeated the word on his mind. Not a typical japanese name, even though his appearance and pronunciation definitely made him pass as someone from the land of the rising sun. Half, maybe? Most likely. That first name was probably of chinese origin by the sound of it, which meant it was his father - the holder of the family name - the one that came from Japan. However, the client chose to not speak that last name, something uncommon when it came to introductions but, at the same, could also mean nothing. Maybe Shinme just didn't like his family name... now that was something Yukio could relate to. "Yeah, three", he reassured the long-haired male as he unexpectedly softly grabbed and pushed Yukio by the wrist, making him walk with him in the direction of the hall where the karaoke rooms were. His hands were warm while his were cold. His were soft to touch while his had the feeling of being older than their age. "Don't worry, knowing her she's now texting all her friends and totally exaggerating the situation", he paused as he let out a smile while thinking of the situation unfolding in the staff room, "She's an amazing person though", he made sure to emphasize that (especially since the girl couldn't hear him), as it was the truth and what he would want everyone else to know about Keiko. Then, suddenely Yukio stopped his step, which made Shinme let go of his wrist. Perhaps that was what reminded the other boy about the payment situation, something he asked about after taking a quick breath. "You don't have to study or anything of the kind?", he asked as an answer, questioning the hours that Shinme wanted to spend at the Black Cat before revealing the reason he stopped, "The room's here."Yukio opened the door to his left, leaving it like that in order to allow Shinme to enter before him. A tiny dark room with one small two-seat couch, a tv, the necessary karaoke equipment and air conditioning that Keiko had left turned on and, as such, made the room warm and cozy. Still standing at the door as Shinme presumably made his way inside and was with his back turned, Yukio would take the opportunity to take off the long-sleeved shirt he had on. In its place he remained with a t-shirt, which was also part of the establishment's uniform, the difference being that the main color of this item was the orange and not the black, with the small logo still visible on the left side of the chest area. "Do you do this everytime you go karaoke?", he asked, casually walking inside and placing the clothing he had just taken off in the hanger behind the door as he closed it. There was nothing flirty or daring in his actions and, yet, in each movement there it was, what Keiko told him time after time because she knew that even after being told one thousand times Yukio wouldn't change one bit: ~~
"Kami-san, do you know why I like you so much?""Yes, you tell me all the t-" "Because you're so unaware of how you pull people towards you."~~
| Yukio. Finally, he had a name, and now that he had it, he won’t let go of it ever. He idly wondered whether if it was written with the kanji of Ice Prince or Brave Lord, but honestly, he liked both of the interpretations. Maybe it was neither, and it instead had a niche writing, which just made it all the more unique. But that was one thing. Shinme could instead focus on what he knew, what he saw, and for the moment? That was enough.
His hands were unusually callous compared to Shinme’s, but the teen barely noticed any of it. He was hyperaware where their skin touched, could feel the coldness under his own warm fingertips, but anything else barely registered from the rush he heard in his ears. He refused to let go though, and instead continued pulling the other.
“Haha, I can already imagine the exaggerations.” At least Shinme knew what he would text to any close confidants if he had any to share such things with. “She does seem amazing. It is already two in the morning, but she has so much energy still. If you guys won’t have any more guests, maybe she can join and we can all sing a group song together.” Shinme offered, because more the merrier, and Yukio appeared to really appreciate Keiko’s presence. He had continued to mention her, after all. Shinme honestly couldn’t fault him either. It was Shinme with the defect in the end.
He let Yukio’s hand slip out of his grasp.
“Study? Oh, I do, but...” He was a tiny bit disoriented, but as Yukio showed him the room and held the door open for him, he beamed up at the other and walked in. “I am actually enrolling into a new school, so I am in the middle of handling the paperwork right now.” He started explaining, his back to Yukio, walking straight to the couch to drop his tote-bag onto its corner. “I am allowed a few days off from my current school to get the enrolling done. And I actually had my year-end exams two months in advance for that purpose, so I am kinda already done for the year. I am more or less free for another two months---“
He turned around just when Yukio closed the door, and so Shinme could catch a special glimpse of him in the backlight of the hallway.
Yukio was young, they were probably around the same age, but he was definitely more fit. His shoulders were rounded, and without the extra shirt on, he could see the muscles constrict as he closed the door shut. The sleeves were just barely able to hide the biceps, not to mention the chest. But Shinme decided his lower arms and hands were the most eye-catching; big palms, long fingers, a gentle line of muscle up to his elbow.
He almost pulled a Keiko and said, wow, isn’t it hot in here, before he realized it was actually hot in here. “Good idea, off with the coat, off with the coat!” He chirped, and his black velvet coat ended up on the hanger next to Yukio’s shirt, leaving him in that light cocoa colored turtleneck that was loose on his form. He couldn’t believe he turned into a friggin teenage girl in the span of a few minutes. He should just lock himself into a second staff room like Keiko, maybe, if it wouldn’t be too obvious and already way too awkward.
Breathe. He could do that. Breathing will turn him back into a soft and stunning teenage boy instead and stop his heart from betraying him any more.
Oh right. He was asked a question, wasn’t he?
“Hm? What do you mean, Yukio?” He replied back, only partly playing innocent, because at first, he really wasn’t sure why Yukio asked such a question. No, he usually wasn’t this out of it, no, he usually didn’t stumble this much... but then he realized. “Oh! No, hahaha! I don’t usually ask the staff to come and sing with me, so no need to be jealous. But you are special, and I was in the mood for some company and attention. Is that weird?” He guessed admitting it might have been odd, but certain times, Shinme had a weird type of honesty. He hopped onto the loveseat strictly into the corner where his bag was, and looked back over his shoulder, twisting his body just a little to lean his arm on the backrest. His eyes were shining, and without his notice, he turned back to just a youth now, excited to sing his heart out.
“Ah, I am totally exploiting the fact I am a client and you are working here, but hey, it is just a few songs, and you can go after it, okay?” His smile was less apologetic and more inviting instead. He patted the backrest as an extra invitation. “Yukio, Yukio! Come here, come here! Are there any types of songs you like? Since you were the one roped into it, you can choose the first song, so it can be something you know well. I can adjust to nearly anything. I don’t mind singing the female parts either, these are just lyrics, so whatever. Actually, hey, maybe I can practice my soprano, as my alt-mezzo is pretty good already.” It was an excited kind of rambling, but if Yukio was observant enough, he could see Shinme’s cheeks colored just slightly from the warm air of the room, his fingers just a bit skittish as they played with the tip of his tied-up hair. He sat partly sideways, his shoulder against the backrest, back against the armrest. His hands were pulled into his lap, one knee pulled up, feet hooked under his other knee. There was space still on the couch, and when Yukio sat down, Shinme wouldn’t shuffle closer or away. He was quite comfortable where he was, unless he had to stand up to sing a particularly emotional song. But that was still up for debate.
If Yukio was someone who unconsciously pulled people in, Shinme was the kind of person who stayed there, comfortable and comforting at the same time.
Yukio Kami & Shinme Kagaya The Wind Sings at Night
He knew the feeling of moving to a new school very well. It had been almost one year since he went from Sendai to Tokyo and since then he had already adapted himself to all the changes such move entailed. Yukio liked to think he was doing quite well for a sixteen year old who was living alone in the big city and whose mother... Anyways, he knew how hard taking care of paperwork could be: in his case, he did it diligently, but for some reason he imagined that Shinme would be more of the type to throw the papers into the air and hope - or, rather, being sure - that they would fall in place. Unaware that the other boy had been glancing at him from the corner of his eyes just seconds before, Yukio closed the door of the room as Shinme took out his own jacket and also hanged it, a sign that made the worker of the Black Cat turn to the AC control panel in the wall and adjust it. "Well, I've seen weirder", he replied back as he began pushing a few buttons to make the room a little less sauna-like. Quite a few situations came to mind... too many, taking into account the relative slow movement of the establishment. The Yakuza guys that came in and payed Yukio to guard the door of their karaoke room, the foreigners that essentially destroyed one of the bathrooms, the weirdo who was getting too touchy with Keiko and made Yukio almost use his Quirk, the night that the boss showed up with four girls and locked himself in the staff room... Yes, too many situations."I have to go run in the morning before practice, so it's really just a few songs, Mr. Client", he continued their conversation, "There", he declared as he pushed the final button he needed to press. Yukio turned back as Shinme called for him to sit down. "A song I like...", he repeated back, thinking of what to choose. As he did so, he sat next to the other boy who, by his words, knew much more about singing than Yukio. Soprano? Alt-Mezzo? What was that supposed to be? All Yukio could think was that those would be cool titles for a personalized volleyball play to pull in a match. He was close to Shinme - not much by choice, but more because of the type of couch it was. They weren't touching, but it wouldn't take much for such to happen. No that Yukio really cared though, such made apparent by the comfortable and with no second thought way in which he followed Shinme's request. "I guess we have to go with this", he said, grabbing the tablet in order to input the song. It was Lemon, the song that almost everyone plays at least one time when going karaoke and extremely popular, which made Yukio sure that Shinme would know it. He put the tablet back down and grabbed the two mics, handing one out to the client. "I'll follow you", he said, inviting the boy to take the lead. Notes: Time to sing! Words: 520 Tags: Shinme Kagaya
| “Weirder?” Shinme’s ears perked up, and he was, admittedly, very curious about what other weird things Yukio had seen, but the opportunity wasn’t there to ask away. He was here to sing, but if he had the chance, he will want to hear some stories Yukio went through.
Hearing Yukio calling him Mr. Client almost made him pout. Maybe giving out only his first name was a bad choice, but there were no takebacks now. He will have to play along, and if the boy wanted to be all professional with him, so be it. Come to think of it... Shinme himself said he was the client, so yeah, it was definitely his own fault. But after a brief pause, he focused on what Yukio actually said. “Oh, you are doing sports! I knew it! Well, I mean, I guessed it right!” He smiled. “Just a few then, okay! I wouldn’t want you to keel over during practice because of me, but then again, you’re already getting way too little sleep if you’re working nightshifts here.” It was just a matter-of-fact mention, but he still had to wonder when was Yukio sleeping if he was working so late at night, or well, into the morning.
Shinme peered at the tablet to see what song Yukio would choose. They were close enough so he could feel the boy’s body heat and his scent if he really tried. Not that he tried. It was just so he could feel it all anyway. And because of that he had to instead focus on the tablet; and Yukio’s big hands and long fingers and--- AUGH dang it!
“Lemon? That’s such a pop one, everyone knows it.” It was so lucky his voice could stay all cheerful and casual even when his mind was racing all over the place, or else he would have stumbled through his words. He felt calmer only when he had the mic in his hands. It was like a pillar that helped him soar through the world and leave worldly matters behind, like ancient mages who cultivated their powers to immortality.
The music started, and Shinme took the lead immediately. He sang.
How good it would have been if this were all just a dream Even now, I still dream of you
He remembered reading about this song before. The artist was asked to write it for a TV show that dealt with unusual deaths. He had one of his family members pass away just around that time, and so, the song and the lyrics were both laced with a kind of loss that fizzled out after getting popular and being sang so many times. Now it was just an emotional love song, but Shinme knew enough about its background to be able to sing it fully.
I know there's no possible way I could ever be hurt any more than this
He was sitting at the start, but as the chorus was approaching, he stood up, swaying just a little under the tune, pushing the whole of his voice into the lyrics.
Even the sadness of those days, even the pain of those days I loved every bit of it, with you by my side In my heart, never coming out, is the bitter smell of lemon I can't go home until the rain lets up And even now, you're my light
His voice was deeper than the original singer’s, just slightly, surprisingly. With Shinme’s appearance, one would expect a higher voice, but he was still a man, still a teenager, with the occasional changes. His range was, however, already wide enough, and when the song neared a pitch, he was able to follow up and not break under it.
Since then, when I think of you Someone I loved More than I ever thought My breath stops Even though you were by my side It's almost like a lie But I'll never forget it That's the only thing I know for sure
The slower part was sung with his eyes open, but as the last few lines caught up to him, he had to close his eyes. He knew the song by heart, so watching the lyrics roll through the screen was already meaningless to him. It was a popular song after all, and he lived in these tunes even in his dreams.
I can't go home until the rain lets up Like one half of a split fruit Even now, you're my light
There were no more prompts for lyrics on the screen, but the song was still going, giving its last few beats, and Shinme repeated the last line, for the air and not for the microphone, to drag it out.
The song ended.
Shinme took a deep breath to come back to the present, from the background of the song, loosely clutching the mic in his hand. He was still standing, but turned around with a shiny smile to check on Yukio. He was so into it that he barely heard the other boy, truth to be told, and it made him feel just a tiny bit guilty. The world stopped moving for him once he was singing. He felt warm under his turtleneck, even though the AC was adjusted before.
“How was it? Up for the next one? Chose again, chose again!” He put one knee on the couch and leaned on and held onto the backrest, watching Yukio and the tablet again for the next choice, and for the reaction. At least, he hoped there was a reaction. He wouldn’t be able to call himself an idol in the future if his voice didn’t bewitch the audience. “By the way” he started a casual conversation topic in the meantime, “what kinda sports are you doing?”
Yukio Kami & Shinme Kagaya The Wind Sings at Night
~~
"Tadaima!"It had been a late practice, as it was usual on every friday. The moon had replaced the sun in the sky and the stars shined brightly upon the streets of that little neighbourhood in Sendai. In his high school track suit, Yukio already had his sneakers on his right hand as he entered his own home, anticipanting the hot shower he was dreaming about on his walk back. "Have you taken your pills? It's already 21pm."He was speaking in a casual tone, much like this was a process that happened almost everyday. While placing his bag down in the bedroom, going to the kitchen to prepare and eat a quick snack, getting his towel and pajamas ready, he would continue to talk - he'd say how practice went, how school was, what was on his mind, etc, etc. But that night it was different. "Mom?" That night there was no reply. ~~
“What kinda sports are you doing?”Being honest, he didn't really hear anything that came before that. Well, when it came to regular talking, that is. As for the singing? Oh, he heard that. He heard it too well. Shinme had a beautiful voice and that was coming from someone who, as one could imagine from his job, heard people singing almost every day. The first word that came to mind was angelic. Many adjectives could be said, many words used to describe it, but it felt like none of that would come close to that initial feeling. Shinme sang like Yukio played volleyball, but when Yukio had to rely on sweat and movement, Shinme only needed the elegance that quite clearly came naturally, both in physique and voice. And, yet, none of that was what made that performance so meaningful. It was the capacity to remind Yukio how harsh the lyrics of that overplayed song could hurt him. "Uhm..."He was gathering his thoughts, trying to bring himself back to normal. It was also good that Shinme also seemed like the type of person that could become so centered on himself, since that meant he probably didn't even notice how Yukio barely sang with him. Or how pale he had become for a few seconds - like he had gotten sick - just before he gathered himself back. "Volleyball", he said, raising his head and looking at Shinme who had positioned himself on the couch in quite a playful way, making his hair and his clean skin jump out for some reason, "I play volleyball."A small silence imposed itself in the room. No matter how calm and composed Yukio was, there's always that one thing that can rock you to the core, those small triggers that happen once in a blue moon by chance and unexpectedly. He had no idea that singing karaoke with a guy he had just met would be one of them. Shaking his head a little bit as if resetting himself, Yukio grabbed onto the tablet again, scrolling for songs as he talked again as if nothing ever happened. "You sing really well. Did you take classes?", he asked, hoping to move away the attention from his own self. In his mind though, those words she always told him kept crawling back: 'Some things just can't be replaced'. | Shinme was a very eccentric person.
Doing whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted, was normal for him. Although he knew there were rules set, he tried to stretch his boundaries as much as possible, sometimes even breaking them, because he knew he can get out of the trouble he dug himself into. But what not all people expected was that he was very observant and intelligent – both mentally and emotionally.
While he sang, he knew nothing of his surroundings. But when he kneeled on the couch, he had the chance to watch Yukio’s face up close. The thumping of his heart quieted down, when he noticed Yukio’s previous calm and serene demeanor was replaced with something paler, something more faded.
Singing had always made Shinme more attuned to emotions, both those of others’ and his own. That was also the reason why there were some songs he had been unable to sing for the heavy emotional intonations that flown through him. And so, there was a little flutter in his chest that spurred him into action.
“Volleyball, hm?” Breaking the momentary silence, his voice was very quiet compared to how he was singing and talking just before, his eyes were shining too, his emotions getting the better of him. When Yukio raised the tablet to search for another song, Shinme reached out with a hand to push the tablet down by Yukio’s hand, not touching the screen and accidentally starting a song.
Shinme was a very eccentric person. And a cunning one.
“Mmmmm, let’s take a few minutes break!” His voice would gain a little whine. He leaned forward, closer to Yukio’s side, and circled his shoulders, enveloping the other in a loose and warm hug. If Yukio didn’t resist, didn’t push him away, Shinme would lower his head and press his ear to the back of the boy’s neck. “This song made me sad, and my throat is sore now, I guess I overdid it. Comfort me, Yukio!” His hold would get stronger for a moment, he would lace his fingers together on Yukio’s shoulder, if the hug lingered. He didn’t actually need the comfort, per say. But he learned people accepted affection easier when he acted selfish and whiny, even if there were a few exceptions.
“Mhm, you could say that.” He answered casually, as if he wasn’t invading the personal space of a complete stranger. “I have been singing ever since I could remember. Some of my family members overseas tutored me, and let me tell you, they were spartan! Lucky I love to sing, otherwise it would have been hell!” He murmured half of it into his own arm at Yukio’s back, if he was allowed to stay like that for so long at all. With a heavy heart, once he deemed the physical contact enough, and before it would get too awkward, he would let go, and sit back on his leg where he was kneeling before, careful not to put his shoe on the couch and dirty it. He still leaned on the backrest, facing Yukio though. “But thank you for the praise! I also think I sing pretty well, though there is still some room for improvement. For example,” his fingers traced his throat, his face contorting into a mocked expression of discomfort, “I still get sore when I sing too strongly. My vocal cords aren’t keeping up with how I want to sing yet.” Face yet again turning cheerful and content, he waved in the air. “But whatever, that’s why I practice, to get better. Do you like volleyball?” He went back to his previous question, curious. “You must, if you are willing to get up early for practice after a night shift. How many wins did you get for your team? Do you play at your school, or somewhere else? Is it only a hobby, or do you have official matches? Like, nationals?” He also wondered why Yukio would work night shifts at all, why he was allowed to, but that wasn’t a question he was about to ask.
Yukio Kami & Shinme Kagaya The Wind Sings at Night
First, a soft touch that mandated his action of picking up the tablet to stop - not in an agressive, commanding manner, but in a caring one that said that now wasn't the time for it, despite previous words. Then, an unexpected hug. He didn't remember the last time he had been hugged so purely. His hold was soft, even when it was clear it was getting stronger. It reminded Yukio of the wind, able to be both a lovable breeze or a powerfull storm; and also able to touch you when you really don't feel like or expect being touched. It wasn't that it bothered Yukio that much - few things did, or at least that was what he presented to the world. It was more of a thing where the boys didn't really knew each other outside of the last twenty minutes, so receiving so much affection was... weird? Yes, weird might be the best way to describe it: not bad, not negative, just, taking all into account, weird. Did Shinme realize the slight change in Yukio's attitude that occured for less than one minute, which led to the abundance of such warmth? Or was he really that much of an affectionate, close person at all time and without any particular reason, something that generally just didn't translate well to the typical japanese person? Whatever it was, there was only thing going on Yukio's mind at that moment. A terrifying thought, one that could change that entire night, hell, the entire world. "Please, Keiko, don't open the door right now..."Yes, if she came in at that moment, with Shinme embrancing Yukio like that... it would be catastrophic. She would never be able to recover and Yukio would never hear the end of it. If the Gods existed, the volleyball player was praying to all of them for this to not happen. "I see...", he spoke, his first words after the initial shock of their proximity, replying to Shinme's explanation of how his family instilled singing into him at the same time that he reciprocated the hug with his own arms in a somewhat awkward way, which probably was what made the pretty teenager realize that the timing was right to end their first physical contact. He readjust himself in the tiny couch, pulling his legs up and crossing them just as if he was meditating, his back straight and posture perfect. His head turned to Shinme in order to look at him while he spoke - something important as it showed respect to the person one is interacting with - Yukio was going to comment on Shinme's words about his vocal cords, since the body not keeping up with the mind was something that he knew a thing or two about. But the other boy just kept talking. "Yeah, I do li-"And talking. "At school, I go t-"And talking. When Shinme stopped the stream of questions, Yukio stayed looking at him in silence for some seconds, his eyes blinking once or twice as if wondering if the other boy was always like that. And then he let out a genuine laugh, shaking his head in the process. It reminded him a little bit of Kento, his teammate. It also made him think how Shun would hate him However, more importantly, it gave him a sense of friendship. "We do have official matches. Nationals were in September. We qualified, but got eliminated in the Quarter-Finals.", he said, as if it was no big deal or nothing particularly special, "Now we're just getting ready for the Final Round of the Tokyo Newcomer's Tournament in two weeks, but since we were Top Four in the Qualifiers for the Spring High we are already at the Quarter-Finals", he concluded as he grabbed the tablet again. He knew full well that most of those words probably meant nothing to Shinme, just like before the singing styles did nothing for Yukio. But one thing was important to point out - the employee of the Black Cat was now clearly talking more as if was interacting with a friend. Maybe the hug really did something, huh? "I'm hoping we get to face Masashige Academy", he continued as he was now scrolling through the tablet, "They won Nationals and got second place at the Spring High, so I want to beat them", there was palpable determination in his voice, even if he was clearly relaxed and just having a normal conversation, "I think this one might be fun", he turned the screen to Shinme, showing that the selected song was Rewrite, by Asian Kung Fu Generation, "What do you think?"Notes: Friends! | Shinme didn’t even realize they were in danger that Yukio’s co-worker could walk in on them at any moment. He wouldn't even consider it danger, mostly because he didn’t know much about Keiko aside from the little meeting they had when he walked into Black Cat that night. Also, he wasn’t aware what went through Yukio’s mind during the hug, but he felt successful when he wasn’t pushed away right from the start. The fact the hug could linger made Shinme giddy, his stomach fluttery. Only when the small response was given, and when Yukio’s hands patted his arm did he release him, give him room to breathe.
His voice never stopped though, and when he finished talking and asking a myriad of questions, he felt bad for not giving proper time for Yukio to answer. His smile was somewhat embarrassed and apologetic for interrupting the other with questions twice in one breath. In his current posture, Yukio almost looked like a monk, and with the infinitely patient and calm demeanor, he supposed that was fitting. He was ready to apologize and give the stage for him to talk, but before he could manage that, Yukio laughed. It stunned the smile onto his face, and he almost missed the answers that were given.
Admittedly, Shinme knew little to nothing about volleyball and sports in general, so Yukio’s words made little sense to him. Either way, Shinme tried to commit all to memory, because it seemed important. “Whoa! Whoa whoa, congratulations! I don’t know much about it, but a tournament, hell, that sounds very cool!” While Yukio picked up the tablet again, he kept going. “And the Nationals as well. No wonder you are practicing so much, you even go after a night shift here.”
He admired it. Truly. Such devotion and strength to go through with the practice and the matches even after work when he is supposed to be tired. To try again even though, as he said, they were eliminated in the quarter-finals in September. But what made him really happy, and what even he noticed despite only knowing this person for barely half an hour was that he talked more, full sentences now. Whether it was for the more interesting topic or something else, Shinme didn’t know, and didn’t care either. He was just honestly happy he didn’t make a mistake with the hug.
“I’ll be rooting for you!” Shime said with a fist-bump, and wondered if the matches will be open for the audience, whether he would be able to watch any of them live. He wanted to. But he wanted a lot of things, and would only be able to get the crumbs. So for now, he focused on the list of songs Yukio was scrolling through, and raised an eyebrow when he showed one particular song.
“Hmmm, it will work!” He nodded, in the end, and tapped the start button on the tablet, picking up the mic that was abandoned between them. He remembered the song itself, and also remembered how it felt a bit off-tune despite its popularity. When he had the chance, Shinme sang it differently, in a way that made more sense to him, sounded less off-key, but it was at least a really stress-less one. They could, literally, sang it however they wanted.
Wanna spew out these grating emotions of mice because There's no other proof of my existence My future I thought I'd grasped Is a contradiction between dignity and freedom
He remained sitting this time, and decided to sing more casually to spare his throat and vocal cords in the long run. It had no stake after all, and his only audience was this boy. For the guitar riff at the start, Shinme imitated the movement of the band as if holding an air guitar in his hands just to do something with himself before the lyrics kicked in. It also gave him the opportunity to pay attention to Yukio, because during the last song, he was to immersed, and couldn’t pay attention to anything.
Wanna erase these distorted afterimages because They show my limitations In the window of my excessive self-consciousness There are no dates in last year's calendar
They went through the first verses before the more scream-y chorus would come...
[attr="class","reason"] [attr="class","reasonbg"] [attr="class","reasonbig"]Kami Yukio [attr="class","reasonsmall"]featuring Kagaya Shinme in... The Wind Sings At Night [attr="class","reasonbod"]"It's no big deal, really, but thanks", he said in appreciation to the other boy's kind and incentivizing words.
Quarter-Finals at Nationals was amazing and Semi-Finals at the Spring High (which he hadn't mentioned seconds ago) was incredible. Many other teams, other players had their dreams and hopes shattered before even being able to see such heights of the mountain. Tokyo Central High was, factually, one of the best schools in the entire country... but it wasn't enough. It wasn't enough to face Masashige Academy, it wasn't enough to beat Sarudana High, it wasn't enough to get over Yukihisha Institute. Greatness was there if they wanted it, but Yukio knew that stopping and settling for such level wasn't a compromise he was willing to take. Greatness wasn't enough anymore, not to him. Was that the reason why he put himself through such a rigorous schedule? It was part of it, sure, but it wasn't the main reason, far from it. Simply put, Yukio liked the hard work. He liked the sound of the alarm clock when the sun wasn't even up yet, he liked staying in the gymnasium when everyone had already left, he liked the late nights at the Black Cat knowing he had school the very next morning, he liked the pain of his muscles begging for some rest. It was a routine, a method. It was reliable, something he could always turn his focus to. Since he was a child that he was like that - the activities changed, but the process remained. First came his responsibilties, only after that could come his problems.
He was happy that Shinme agreed to the chosen song. It was one that Yukio and the rest of the boys usually sang when going together to the Black Cat and they always had a blast, so it was a good pick for lifting up the mood and having a good time. The other teen took it upon himself to start the song, so Yukio simply proceeded to grab the leftover microphone atop of the table and follow the professional's lead. As the music started, he bobbed his head and body slightly and according to the rhythm.
"Such a good song", he thought as he always did as the guitar immediately came in.
He was relaxed, so he wasn't really concerned about how his singign voice was - the point of karaoke isn't being perfect, it's having fun! As the first part of the music went on, Yukio's deeper, more rough and untrained voice contrasted with Shinme's one, but it was a mixture that kinda sounded nice... at least to him.
Then the chorus came and... Well...
"KESHITEEEEEEEE, RIRAITO SHITEEEEEEEE (...)"
He went for it. Like, really went for it. Vein on the neck popping type of going for it. No breath left in the lungs type of going for it. Emotional even, despite hidden behind the screams in which he sang. Lunging forward and into the mic, the perfect posture broken for the spirit of the rockstar that had now possessed the young boy.
"(...) KISHIKAISEEEEEEEEI, RIRAITO SHITEEEEEEEE (...)"
With the break of the song, he slumped into the back of the couch, heavy breathing.
"Yabeeeeeei", he let out in between breaths, "Are you hanging in there, Shinme-san?"
He would remain like that, without singing, as the song entered it's next verse - either Shinme would be alive enough to sing it or in its place the melody of the song would play with no vocals as the boys regathered themselves. Then, as the music was on it's crescendo for the final chorus...
"C'mon, together now", he would say, quickly getting up and, with his right-arm, pushing Shinme up with him by the sleeve of his shirt, "1, 2 and..."
He took a big breath and, once more, grabbing the mic with both his hands and drawing his mouth close to it, with the perfect timing...
"KESHITEEEEEEEE, RIRAITO SHITEEEEEEEE (...)"
Some small jumping went into it while they kept singing the chorus - or just Yukio, if Shinme had died from heart failure, which would've been understandable - until the last guitar chords played and played until the song's conclusion. When such happened, the setter for Tokyo Central High would almost literally fall into the couch. Looking to the ceiling almost as if he was a stranded man in the desert praying for water, he spoke.
"Shinme-san... Shinme-san... Are you alive? Are you still with me?", he asked, playing for dramatics.
It was a good release that showed that Yukio did indeed also know how to have fun. It was important and also part of the process, he thought, and it was something his mother never wanted him to forget. So he didn't. After all, for all the hard work, he was still a kid, so he allowed himself to be one when the time was right.
He just hoped that Shinme knew how to handle it.
