For her first real combat classes, officially sanctioned by her new role as a combat teacher, Mia wanted to do something simple. She'd felt like in the past years during the tournaments, some animosity tended to leak into the fights, but she just wanted to see what these kids could do off their own backs as fighters, especially when competing against a fellow student, or against circumstances, that put them at roughly equal footing. Now she wasn't a genius or anything she knew that readily enough... but she felt like she had enough battle instinct from watching these kids to come up with some strong pairings out of those who'd ended up signing up.
Today's pairing she'd fully admit she didn't know much about, but she was eager to see them in action. Jace was someone who tended to go under the radar a bit in her experience but not for a bad reason of any kind. He used what he had to his advantage and tended to slip a little under the cracks in terms of his scores. They were good, but mostly focused on how he tended to strike from unexpected angles, from stealth, and had a good bit of agility to him paired with some naturally strong senses. Mia hadn't really dealt with someone like that, so she was eager to see what he could do when she specifically prodded that part of his arsenal with a stick.
As for the other boy, Krahno, he seemed to more typically be a healer, so to see him sign up for an optional combat class was a little surprising. She didn't really know any way she could play up his healing talents in a straight up fight so she'd have to do just that. Ignore it. This was a combat situation he'd signed up for and healing didn't always play a part in that. There weren't always gonna be civilians to protect in every given situation. Maybe to keep an eye out for, sure, but not always actively in harms way... he signed up a for a fight? Mia would just make sure he got one.
When the students finally arrived at the Saikyuen building, a dome shaped building on the outskirts of Japan doing government contracts for high end training simulations, they'd be given places to change into their hero gear (or training gear if they preferred) and be sent to different entrances to the battle arena, and for very specific purpose at that. As the two came out onto the battlfield, it would be incredibly dark. There were minimal lights, like stars in a nights sky almost allowing them to just barely see around them with the senses of an average man, though Jace may find it somewhat easier.
Examination of the battlfield seemed to make it look like a prison courtyard. A mock one, but the aesthetic was clear. There were 4 structures aligned with the corners of the room, space between them and the main walls of the room. The structures were like corridors, L shaped, with an entrance at each end. In the middle stood a tall wooden tower, with Mia standing atop it, leaning against what appeared to be an aimable spotlight.
"Welcome boys to your combat session. Now remember, this is just to loosen up but... let's still try to make it interesting huh? Jace?" She'd call out to Jace's entrance. Neither student would clearly be able to see where the other was... until Mia turned the spotlight around, and turned it on against Jace, like an escapee prisoner pinned by the light.
"Jace, I hear you're a little trickster, so lets add some challenge to that huh? You're face Krahno, and, kinda, me.~ While Krahno can work in shadow, I will constantly be trying to put this spotlight on you. You can try to elude me, outrun me, but I'm gonna be working to keep this spotlight on you as best as I can, so you better put some effort into avoiding me."
Other than that, there were no real rules, Mia would step in if things got too heated but- "Other than that, you kids know how a fight goes! Lets play escapee and prison guard shall we?~"

Krahno knew his strengths and combat wasn't usually the one he would automatically go to. Yes he had signed up for this in the first place but if he was going to be a healer on the battlefield then he needed to better equip himself with more skills on how to properly defend himself and others, not just for healing like he was used to. Krahno never really let the fact that he could attack and defend with his ice very known. Everyone at the brawl soon found out the hard way but that was then and this was now.
Entering the battle area as it were Krahno had been in his training uniform which consisted of the usual track uniform that students were expected to wear for gym class and training exercises. For once Krahno had not worn his signature white coat that he always wore to pretty much everything but then again he was going to take this combat class seriously, even if it meant going against his teachings to heal and not harm. This was UA after all they needed to be ready for anything and if he wanted to be a proper support hero he needed this training.
Krahno could barely see much in this dark area as the stars would faintly light the area up which in this setting seemed to be mock prison. He would make sure not to freeze the area too much but if this was a mock prison he would have to likely be the mock prisoner or the mock jailer, with their teacher turning the spotlight on the boy named Jace it was quite obvious that Krahno was not going to be the 'prisoner' in this setting. He'd be the mock jailer trying to catch the escaped convict. Perfect, this would be a great way to test out his combat abilities as with the spotlight always aiming onto Jace and the fact that Krahno pretty much hid his combat abilities from pretty much everyone he should be able to win this mock battle.
Still he shouldn't underestimate his opponent Jace. He could have any sort of quirk and that was scary, to win this Krahno would have to be quick and clever, with their teacher's help with the spotlight he could make quick work of his opponent by freezing the floor beneath them and trap this escapee from getting out.
"I am ready." he said simply. He didn't want to give away his plan that was for sure, but he will be ready when the round starts. Still even with the spotlight shining on Jace seeing his opponent in the dark like this could prove hard to do, especially if they hid behind something. "We'll make this a good match." Krahno said as he took a readied stance.

Jace was a nervous wreck to put it kindly for the red headed boy. Not that this was unusual, or even abnormal for the notoriously anxious boy. Even if this was a normal combat mission the boy would likely be feeling nervous and anxious, especially given how his last run at Fort Slog left him with a broken femur. Though he'd had a few less disastrous showings since then, most notably the undead incident where he managed to rescue UA's own government liason Elise. But beside that his record could only be called spotty at best, and even after the femur incident his record in Fort Slog was probably below average even compared to most second years, let alone how he'd actually compare to his fellow peers. Facts he was pretty sure that Redhorn was very much aware of even though he worked much closer to her Hellhound counterpart Freya than the notorious oni. But not all of this could be solely blamed on the still anxiety ridden boy. The majority of Fort Slog, and a good portion of the hero courses taught here had a strong focus on rescuing, with the natural assumption most students are going to have rescue as a part of their reppetoire. However, Jace went against this mold in every way. He lacked the ability to heal, only had enough strength to barely carry one person let alone rubble that might be on them. The only thing that he had that could be used in rescues were his enhanced smell and hearing. But those senses could also be used in other ways, specifically spying. Which also combined with his talent for stealth made him a natural espionage hero. Unfortunately, being a niche specialist meant that he would struggle in a place meant to cater to the average hero like UA.
And this led to him brooding on his own misfortune, increasing his own anxiety to the point he looked like he was about to cry on the bus that was taking him to the special combat arena being used for these trials. While normally Jace would be hesitant to sign up for practices that focused on his weaknesses such as rescue, or strength, or history with Perry-sensei, combat was one of the focuses that Jace actually did manage to get average if not slightly above average marks compared with rest of his peers. Which wasn't completely nonsensical, combat and stealth did compliment each other. But even if he wasn't quite as hopeless in combat as he was in many of the other aspects of heroing, this still couldn't console him on the ride to the strange building. His usual support group who helped him keep his cool had decided to pass on the combat lesson, leaving the poor boy to face his fate alone.
And this was the mindset he had when the bus finally arrived at its destination as well. Still looking like he was about to cry as he was led into the building, only finding comfort in his hero suit. And given the boys natural shyness and modesty, that wasn't saying much given the nature of his hero costume. Wearing a Flak Jacket with a high collar protecting his neck, yet also cutting off at his navel if it weren't for him wearing his gym shirt underneath there was a good chance he'd faint right then and there. Other than this unique choice of dress, he also wore cargo capris, which were a near black shade of blue along with his vest and gym shirt, and lastly he was wearing traditional Japanese sandals with no socks. A strange choice given it was very obvious he was a foreigner, but nothing that was too questionable given it was still somewhat fashionable even if it was winter. And all of his fashion choices would be put to the spotlight. Literally. Jace put up a hand, trying to shield his eyes from the blinding light that was now being shined on him. Which is when Redhorn started to explain the rules of the match, and more specifically how she was instituting a handicap on the anxious boy despite his own misgivings of his skills. And his reaction was about what you could expect from the overly-emotional boy. EHHHHHH?!!! WH-WHA ?!! W-Whyyy?! H-How am I...But...But... The boy sputtered about, only able to finish various whines in his sentence as he really did look like he was about to cry at this point. But he didn't have too much time to focus on his own misgivings as his opponent seemed to be perfectly okay with this arrangement. Not that the boy could see him in the dark, even as his eyes slowly adjusted to the giant light that was now focused on him.
As the other boy confirmed that he was ready, Jace fumbled inside his vest, and pulled out a white, round shaped object. And then two things would happen, first Krahnos would get at least a taste of what Jace's quirk was as he transformed. It was nothing too serious compared to some of his classmates, the most noticeable thing being him growing a cat-like tail and his ears growing sharper and tufted. If Krahnos looked close enough he'd also notice glints of light on his hands and feet, the light reflecting claws and even his fangs became slightly visible as he opened his mouth to take a breath. It was a quick transformation, one of the advantages of having a relatively minor one. And then he placed the round object on his face, and felt his worries and anxiety disappear. Jace's transformation naturally managed to suppress his more...erratic tendances, but even then he had slip ups. But when wearing his mask it was like he was a different person, he wasn't the same boy who kept failing in Fort Slog, who had lost in his first fight against a villain, had failed every tournament fight he'd been in during the Sports Festival. He was able to completely disassociate himself. And when Krahnos told him how they'd make this a good match there'd be no response from the previously anxiety ridden boy. He'd simply keep staring upwards into the dark ceiling for a few seconds to catch his breath, before he smelled the air.
The room was actually somewhat closed off which made the amount of smells in the room surprisingly few. While untransformed Jace's senses were peak human, if not maybe bordering superhuman. But in the end they were just that. Human. But when he was transformed it was completely different beast. He could smell Redhorn, a strong, demanding scent that most girls would probably take as unflattering. The metal of the barriers. And then there was the smell to his side, strong. And Krahnos would see the boy suddenly turn his hard sharply and decisively, staring where the smell was coming from, his white mask looking more and more eerie as only his head was turned to face him. Then he'd be off, not running towards the boy but instead fleeing into the darkness near the metal barrier closest to Krahnos' back. And without the light on him he was in his natural habitat, silent and melding into the darkness even when running. While Jace's vision wasn't enhanced in the classical version when transformed, he did get near night vision, and while he didn't expect to escape Redhorns light, even getting partially closer to the flank would be enough.

"Ahhhh don't worry kid you'll do fine!~" She called out confidently to Jace's whining. Krahnos seemed to be all for it and cat boy didn't seem to put up too grand a fight so she assumed it would be okay. Her elbow resting over the top of the spotlight, she let the two kids have a moment to get ready. Having not been officially combat teacher till very recently, her brow rose with some surprise as she took in exactly how Jace transformed, the shift in his posture and the sudden silence... her own stance shifted a little more serious, both hands on the handles of the spotlight, ready to move. There was a beat of silence as he adjusted...
"And we're off! Look at 'em go!~" Deciding to keep things light with the color commentary Mia launched herself to the side. With a much smaller turning circle she didn't need speed to keep up with Jace, but she had to admit the kid was light on his feet, and going the long way around he was already dipping out of her sight. Of course, with her own somewhat enhanced senses, spotting him as he came in from Krahno's flank wasn't impossible, shifting quickly to keep the light on them, now enveloping both students as Jace tried to get in close.

Looking a little surprised at the actions this Jace fellow would take as he entered the arena but it was after the boy's transformation that put a small look of shock on his face. That was just great now wasn't it? This guy seemed to have a strange quirk indeed. What was it though? He had no idea really since that sudden transformation may have been it or not. Whatever it was that was not the important issue here, he needed to focus on the task at hand right now.
Placing his foot down and activating his quirk he would speed up the process of how he made his ice with what could be seen as almost an instant as Ice shot out toward Jace from where Krahno had stepped as it rushed toward Jace in a rather fast speed, almost as if the speed had been like that of a fitness instructor. His new found speed with his quirk was astonishing for anyone who hadn't known that his ice could be used to attack and defend, let alone be used to support as he always had it as. This was definitely showing the results of his training with Nimue!
As Jace approached his flank the spotlight shone on him as Krahno shifted his weight to adjust his ice to head toward Jace's feet, hoping to freeze him in place as his ice approached at a rather fast pace. "Hmm you are faster than you look." Krahno mused as he used his ice to support him from the other side just in case Jace tried to use his quirk against him in some other way.
Krahno would ready another icy blast with his hand forming it slowly compared to his last attack that was aimed at Jace's feet. If he approached from another side or even in the air Krahno would be ready for him. "Time is of the essence, I have none to waste on escaped convicts." Krahno said getting into the act of the mock battle.
~
Actions taken:
Krahno observes Jace's transformation with a shocked look on his face.
Krahno shows the side of his quirk that he never really showed in class before.
Krahno makes a wave of ice head towards Jace's feet in an attempt to freeze him in place.
Krahno readies another icy blast in case Jace takes a more direct approach from a different angle.

While everyone else seemed shocked both at the boys literal and figurative transformation, Jace himself would have no reaction, still just staring at the other boy in the darkness with his unreadable mask. Indeed, it was impossible to tell what he was feeling, thinking, or anything beyond the eerie blank stare that returned their looks. Even if he was now gone, Yojin had gone above and beyond in making this mask creepy when he'd made it.
And then there was the red headed boys actual abilities, as soon as combat started and Jace darted into the darkness, Redhorn made sure to keep the spotlight on him. Yet, at first even Jace was aware of his good start, the flashes of light in his eyes appearing, than disappearing as Jace kept fading in and out of the darkness. It seemed even his own combat professor hadn't quite realized just how developed the skills she was trying to hone were. But all good things come to an end, and Redhorn acclimated just as fast as she'd almost lost him and Jace felt the full revealing light on him. Normally this would have gotten whines and cries of more complaints, but this time the cat boy only gave Redhorn a glance before looking back at his opponent, silent with his blank mask still being his only tell.
And the opposing boy, Krahno, for his part didn't seem complacent to let Jace have full reign of the field. So Jace watched him through the darkness, his vision able to pierce the darkness as his cat like pupils dilated behind his revealed eye holes. And while Krahno's abilities would almost certainly impress those who could see the improvement of his skills, Jace for his part had no real frame of reference for what Krahno was or even had been capable of. And any surprise he might be feeling at the ice attack was impossible to see, given that one of the advantages of wearing a mask was Jace being unreadable. But while it was impossible to gauge his reaction to the attack, he was definitely aware of it, Jace watching the ice spread through the ground not in a creep but in a sprint, rushing towards him like flooding water. And with the ground itself quickly becoming a danger, Jace decided to simply flip the script. With an emphasis on flip.
The red headed boy would leap into the air, not trying to jump over the attack but instead redefining the entire arena as he'd leap towards the very wall he'd made a run for. While it no longer served as a flanking spot due to the white haired boy knowing he was there, it did serve as a safe zone as he'd dig his claws into the wall, and the boy would go from running on the ground to wall climbing. Though he wasn't climbing at the moment, having decided to stop momentarily to watch the boy, even showing his sense of balance by slowly standing up, or standing sideways depending on your point of view so he could actually watch him without having to twist his entire body. And just like with everything else, there'd be no reaction to the blue skinned boys compliment, no return compliment, no acknowledgement. Just more blank stares.
And as he stared, he watched Krahno ready himself, the boy not even trying to hide what he was doing. Which made sense, it served as a pretty big deterrent from approaching, and it seemed to work for the moment as Jace didn't make an approach on the boy or try to get behind him, simply staying on his wall. But as Krahno got deeper into his role and taunted the boy, he'd finally manage to get a reaction out of Jace since he'd put his mask on. It'd be visible from the start, strips of smoke sizzling from his body under the spotlight. But this wouldn't last long, being just as if not quicker than his actual quirk, and soon his upper body would be swallowed by flames, his mask now flickering in the mixed light of the spotlight and fire.
Then he'd be on the move, running down the pillar on all fours with extreme adeptness. Than he'd start playing with angles, actually jumping from his side of the L to the other, before immediately jumping once more off the pillar unto the ground, and straight towards Krahno. With the hopes that these sharp, erratic angles had at least momentarily thrown the boy off, he'd attempt to leap unto the boy, trying to dig his claws into Krahno's shoulders as his flaming body pressed against his and cause Krahno to topple. But Jace wouldn't stick around whether he fell or not, as Jace would push off of Krahno just as quickly, retreating towards the wall opposite to them and showing his preference for hit and run. At least, for now.

Mia couldn't help but give a light chuckle as Krahno seemed to be getting into his role within this fight, shaking her head and having a good little smile about it as she kept adjusting the light. Going atop the walls and staying out in the open, Jace wasn't making her job hard of keeping him in the spotlight. Honestly a part of her hoped he may have made her job difficult, tried to use his more stealthy traits to dip around her and Krahno and try to get the drop on him, but with the forward approach maybe she'd scared him out of attempting it? Eh, if that's how he wanted to tackle the problem, fare enough right?
As for the combat itself Mia had to admit Krahno had a much more forward skillset than she may have been expecting. The spreading ice was definitely an aspect of his quirk but he was more readily able to utilize it than she may have guessed. Squaring up her shoulders as Jace made an assault attempt, she wondered if he was just playing the role of some psycho convict, or if the transformation actually shifted his personality a bit. She'd keep a close eye on things, making sure she was ready to jump in if things got too heated.

What was with that mask and how did he maneuver so darn fast? Well no matter, if he could get Jace to slow down using his ice that would be all he needed to do. As he taunted Jace, Krahno quickly noticed that after putting on the mask parts of his body started to light up like a flame. "That's not good." Krahno said now admitting that this might be a bit tougher for him considering his polar opposite was fire and intense heat. If he was hit by something akin to fire his ice would melt and that would be a lot harder to deal with. As Mia moved the spotlight toward Jace's direction which seemed to be hard to follow for Krahno but he darted his eyes back between the directions as Jace moved rather quickly in every which way to try and throw off Krahno.
However Krahno had an idea in the form of a twin layer defense. First he would encase his body in his Ice Armor which was strong enough to be considered tough as wood. Not the strongest but definitely a good enough defense for now. Krahno then used his spare hand that he was saving his attack for to spread Ice around the circumference of his body in the form of a circle of Ice Spikes. As Jace attempted to pounce him Krahno had already setup his little barrier of spikes, even if he hopped over it Krahno was prepared to defend with his Ice Armor.
Moving to a defensive position Krahno braced for impact as the blow collided with his body. The attack did not knock him down but it did manage to crack through his armor, which was just enough to protect him for the while. Now Krahno would go on the offensive. Nothing too major as he formed the ice spikes around the circle of ice into Ice chains that shot outward toward Jace hoping to chain him up with the circle of Ice around him in all directions.
It would definitely show that Krahno was talented but if they looked close enough they could tell Krahno was using up his quirk in rapid succession which was tiring him out a bit. "Get back here. We're not done yet." Krahno scowled as he tried his best to maneuver his ice to try and capture Jace. Right now Krahno was standing still in the middle of his little Ice circle while controlling his ice to try and chain Jace up with it.
Actions taken:
Krahno notices the creepy mask and the fire, much to his dismay.
Krahno takes notice of the fast maneuvers of Jace as he prepares his Ice Armor and a Circle like barrier of Ice Spikes.
Krahno intercepts the blow intended to knock him down with the Ice Armor as it cracks.
Krahno changes the Ice Spikes into Ice Chains as they aim in all directions that shoot out to try and capture Jace.
Krahno is starting to get tired due to the rapid fire way he's using his quirk.

Keeping traction on the frozen ground was at least one thing Jace didn't have to worry about in this match, his preference for open toed sandals now becoming more obvious as the claws on his feet clicked against the ice, digging into it with each step, along with the claws in his hands as he ran on all tours towards the white haired boy. And with his flames, warmth wasn't an issue either despite the ice's biting grip trying to envelop him in cold. But unfortunately, this confidence gave way to momentary complacency moments away from pouncing. And he paid the price for it, as soon ice spikes shot up from the ground, covering the ice boy in a impromptu defensive barrier.
Thankfully Jace was quick. More than quick enough to avoid being skewered, or even anything really serious. But he didn't get out completely unscathed, the ice spear cutting through the side of his waist as he jumped from all fours and flipped sideways over it, before his flames then melted the tip cutting him. However, it wasn't enough to cause him to stop from his initial attack, still pouncing on the white haired boy. But while he had been distracted from the ice spears, he'd missed the second layer of defense, ice armor now all around the blue skinned boy. And whole Jace had been successful in his attack, the additional weight had made the boy too heavy for him to force down. Thankfully, he was still able to escape, jumping over an ice spear as he retreated back towards a wall.
And once he got away from the danger zone, he absentmindedly felt the cut against the side of his waist. Ah... It was the first thing he'd said since putting on his mask, and instead of words it was more an acknowledgement of the fact he'd been hurt, not even being a gasp of pain, the red headed boy rubbing the cut as the blood was all but dried up from his flames. But the fact that he'd been cut in the first place was telling all on its own. Specifically, how unlike most of his fellow third years Jace's durability was pretty much non-existant, at least against something as powerful as a well trained and practiced quirk. While his flak jacket could protect him from things like a common knife, it still had its limits, and right now those limits were becoming quite apparent.
We're not done yet! The ice boys yell interrupted Jace's contemplation on his wound, the masked boy looking up to see something new being formed, chains of ice. Once again, Jace's reaction to such a surprising development was physically impossible to read thanks to his mask, however he wasn't without reaction. Where his flames had initially seemed like they were about to die out after he escaped from his attack, suddenly they would burst back to life, even more intense than before. And as the flames got hotter and hotter, his form would start to shift under the spotlight. His very location suddenly became harder and harder to read, as his body shimmered, stretched, and even multiplied under the intense heat. The fire cat boy was creating a heat haze around himself, creating a mirage to hide his location despite being in plain sight, his blank mask being the last thing to be distorted. I...agree... And then once again, he'd bolt at Krahno.
Whereas before his attack had focused on trying to throw him off through misdirection, this time he ran right at the ice boy, focusing entirely on his mirage to hide his presence. As each chain would come at him, he'd attempt to dodge with minimal movement, making it look like one of the chains had hit him until the form would dissipate and once again he'd blink back into existence, still running towards the ice boy if successful. Except this time he wasn't going for the pounce. Jace would use the spears that had been used to wound him for his own advantage this time, leaping unto one and then leaping off it towards Krahno, trying to land as close to the white haired boy as he could. Before, he'd let his guard down, but this time the flaming red head immediately followed up his landing, not wanting another surprise like last time. And he'd start by aiming for Krahno's legs. On top of having lower endurance, Jace was for all intents and purposes very weak as well, most first years managing to surpass him in pure strength. However, what he lacked in strength he made up for with his claws. All it took was a flick of the wrist, a simple gesture, and he could cut through titanium. So he wasn't worried about the resistance the ice armor might offer.
If he managed to hobble his tricky opponent, even for a moment, he'd follow up by flipping backwards, trying to hook Krahno's head with a flaming kick, trying to break some of his ice armor before catching himself on the ice with his claws. Even as close as they were, Jace would be distorted, his entire figure twisting under the light and fire, smoke masking his surroundings. The clearest about him was his pure white mask, still staring blankly. And suddenly that mask would go from a few feet away to face to face with Krahno, Jace blitzing the boy as he wrapped his leg around Krahno's leg, digging his claw into his underarm as he grappled him and wrapped around him. Mia would likely recognize Jace's fighting style here. From the high flying style of constant mobility, use of flips, and grappling, it was a clear, if not unique imitation of her "rival" Freya aka Hellhound, and Jace's main apprenticeship where he learned combat.
... And with this silent pause, Jace would finish the grapple and allow the Flames surrounding his body do the rest. Burning through the remaining ice armor, and burning the blue skinned boy himself, Jace focused on intensifying the flames as much as possible before tossing the boy away, breaking off the grapple himself before any counter could come and once again retreating. But this time he didn't retreat towards any wall, but instead to the wooden pillar itself. The masked boy wasn't sure where the light could reach, but he would try to hide from it where Miss Kearney would least expect, directly under her. His flames would finally die down completely, once again leaving the room dark except for the spotlight as he would climb the wooden tower, trying to avoid the spotlight as he crawled upwards, and hoping it couldn't stretch down far enough to hit him, while licking his hand and arm through his mouth hole, rubbing down his body with saliva to cool down his body.
