The final Saturday of July and there was a Hanabi festival, there would be lots of little stands and they'd be able to walk around checking out all the cute things! ...they...right...that was jumping the assumption gun by a lot, part of his brain actually thought she'd say yes to joining him. What a goddamn joke if he'd ever heard one! The kaiju woman was friendly, polite and good with customer service...but it's not like she saw him as more than just a customer. Especially with how cringe he was as their first encounter! FUCK IT. He was gonna get a do over, he was gonna try one more time and just give up if it didn't go well!

Sure, still be a patron and all that good stuff, but he wasn't one to bug the hell out of someone telling him no, even if they were his ideal partner. Oversleeping a bit in the shop kinda set him back and his brain was so damn foggy from all the wild amounts of stress. Enda's memory was skipping more than a broken recorded after some irresponsible child played with the vintage vinyl music piece. Bringing a palm up to his forehead, a groan wiggled its way out of him and it probably didn't help that he guzzled down a ton of whiskey just to pass out for the past few nights. Something told him he was forgetting something very important tied to the bakery...namely Teruko and Akiva.

It's like he was working on a jigsaw puzzle and the family dog ate a few pieces after the cat chased a rat all over the damn thing, scattering it everywhere, then finding other pieces that don't belong there like some sort of enigma. Sliding his hand down his face, he pat the pads of his fingers on his chin and tapped away, blowing a little raspberry in thought...huh...well whatever it was, it'd come back to him. Maybe he was over thinking that and freaking himself out? There's no way Teruko would know of his vigilante life, he mostly did patrols in Tokyo and Akihabara since Musutafu had so much coverage.

...Akiva didn't seem like the sort who would sell him down the river to put his livelihood at risk either...right? God, he hoped not...he was trying to be a good person and that wouldn't be right, at least that much he remembered. Things after that were just foggy...falling off a roof and no one was dead is as far as his memories went with that. Plopping his hand on the table, he got himself up and freshened up to be at least ready for the evening. Going out smelling like booze? No thanks!

Despite being sober and all since the amount of time that passed, he accidentally spilled some honey whisky on his hoodie and well that explained that! At least now he had a black long sleeved turtle neck shirt, a yellow zip up jacket over it with little thumb holes cut into, those black finger-less gloves with teeth embedded in the knuckles hidden between fabric, a pair of skinny jeans and yellow sneakers. Plus a combination of boredom and drunkenness got him to make those nails of his a bee and flower scheme...looking those over, at least they looked cute. Or you know, at least he thought so! They went nicely with the orange and yellow eye shadow he had going on with a little hint of red eyeliner.

Fluffing up his hair to hide the darker hues of his locks before popping on a grey, vintage looking messenger cap with a black band around it. Bringing out his phone, he furrowed his brows and looked at the time...putting on his earrings, he left the necklace behind since something about it felt upsetting? Tucking the phone back away in his pocket, he had a simple coin purse hidden away in his jacket rather than a normal wallet, felt a little easier to deal with in crowds. The shop was coming together, but there were some final touches he wanted to make before officially opening. Getting a marker and paper, he wrote DO OVER PLEASE? on it and took a deep breath followed up by a heavy sigh.

Leaving the shop and locking the doors, he went to his business neighbor Teruko...and was greeted with a closed sign. Puffing his cheek, he pushed the sign he made up against the window and knocked away to hopefully get her attention! Maybe he should have made sure to see it was right side up first? Whatever, if it ended up being upside down and she laughed before walking away and ignoring him, that would be fine too...at least he'd get a laugh out of her, right? Deeefinitely wouldn't be the first time or anything new.

honey you're familiar IF THIS WERE THE TOKYO LOCATION, closing before sunset would've been unthinkable. The nightlife kept the original location bumping well past midnight. But Mustafu was... blissfully more chill than that. Golden light danced through the windows of her business, casting beams of light over the tables and onto the tiled floor. Teruko had moved leftovers into the fridge, mopped the floor, and was in the midst of wiping the tables down when a soft rap upon the front door.
The kaiju lifted her gaze, sighing quietly. Most of the lights were off, the doors were locked… couldn't some people get the message? A familiar, stilted figure stood at the door, one hand pressed to the window with a sheet of paper. Teruko set her rag in the bucket, wiping her hands on her apron.
Enda.
One overly-complicated neighbor. After breaking-up a fight between Enda and Akiva, Teruko's relationship with the eccentric salon-owner had been strained at best. He acted as though nothing had happened, routinely stopping-by for one delicacy or another. The kaiju couldn't help but clench her teeth and glance back at the kitchen, each time he showed up. It was a sort of fierce, maternal protectiveness over Akiva that pushed her into these stilted interactions.
But… Akiva wasn't there in the evenings. So Teruko padded towards the door and, drawing an overloaded keyring from her hip, unlocked the door.
DO OVER PLEASE, Enda's sign pleaded desperately?
The lock clicked into place, and Teruko opened the door, leaving only enough space to poke her head through by balancing the door in the crook of her shoulder.
"Evening, Halloran-san," she greeted coolly, "What can I do for you?"
It was a canned greeting. Patient, polite, very customer service-y. She still wasn't sure what to do with her eccentric, yellow-loving neighbor.
Speaking of yellow-loving… reptilian eyes drank-in his appearance. All black-and-yellow and vaguely punk. Teruko, all the while, wore an outfit reminiscent of a waiter at a 1950's diner-- complete with a red-and-white pinstriped apron with coordinating red bowtie. Sure, it was drag, but it sure as hell beat getting a women's uniform made in her size.
"You're looking very color-coordinated this evening," she complimented his get-up, trying to ease some of the simmering tension.

Lightly bonking his head once upon the glass, he closed his eyes and just felt like maybe it was time to give up. After all, he didn't deserve nice things, did he? The universe always gave him something nice only to take it away, or remove the rose tinted glasses that made a big red flag look perfectly fine. Taking a deep breath, he slowly exhaled...he probably drank way more than he thought and was still trying to sober the hell up. Maybe the stress made it linger...then again, he did drink to the point of blacking out. Even screwed up his memory with the stress to boot, like every night was something he should just be sitting at alcoholic's anonymous or something rather than patrol, go home, drink himself to sleep.

Sometimes he was too late and as many times as he'd seen a mangled corpse, he wasn't completely numb to it because even he knew it wasn't normal. The clanging of her keys caused his eyes to open in a squint with a pout...oof...yeah the lingering headache was back with a vengeance! ...wait, what the funky fresh fuck?! Why was she even at the door?! Those golden eyes shot wide open as he looked more confused than a puppy in pad training!

"...hi...?" Blinking a few times as though he was trying to anchor himself back to planet Earth, he crumpled up the sign, not totally sure if he should go through with this half baked scheme. Flicking the sign right into the trash near her door. "Um." It was like the universe was losing its shit, laughing its galactic ass off at him! That didn't stop him from blushing and looking off to the side shyly when she complimented his ability to match up those sweet colors, though. Slowly bringing one hand up to lightly rub the back of his head, he felt like some dweeb trying to ask the popular girl out at school for prom or something right now!

"...thanks...so uh...does that mean you wouldn't be against going out tonight? It's like the Hanabi Festival and stuff...we coooouuuuuld get to actually know each other?" Sliding his hand off from the back of his head, he put his hand into his jacket pocket...did past, possibly not drunk Enda do the thing...? Producing a little fake red rose with a short stem so it could fit into a pocket, the pain from the headache was actually helping him stay and feel a bit more tethered...and her voice? It...helped.

Part of him was saying back up and run, but most of it was just accepting that there was no turning back. "Corny as shit, but Serizawa-san...you're more than just some badass kaiju from the screen, you're a sweet baker who takes no shit with like a heart of gold...and...yeah...no pressure, you can say no and...I'll stop, kay? I'll go and disappear...it's something I'm really good at." Cupping the little flower while furrowing his brows, he looked down with a soft sigh, "...weirdo, I'm totally a weirdo...but a creep? Nah...not my thing." It was a moment of tender honesty, wearing his emotions clear as day, not making the effort to go extra to spare himself or others around him.

The lingering bits of alcohol almost drove him to say if anything, Tokyo could always use more heroes..., but he caught it in his throat, she couldn't know about that side of him. Yet...why did something nag and scream at him that she already knows...? God he hated how fucked his memories got with stress and alcohol in the mix...

honey you're familiar ENDA EVEN SEEMED SURPRISED BY his own presence at the door. Teruko waited patiently as he hesitantly returned the greeting, bumbling through a “hi” and an “um”. She pinched her eyes shut tiredly before opening them again—she just wanted to close shop and go to bed, honestly, and now Enda was here preventing that. Uuuggggh. In the time it took Teruko to internally bemoan the presence of the gangly little stumbling block, Enda finally seemed to find the words within him. And they rushed-out all at once, as if he’d pulled the drain on a tub full of words. Whooooosh. The kaiju inclined her head, her expression nothing short of dumbfounded as Enda prattled on-and-on about going-out together, perhaps to the Hanabi Festival?
“You want to go ou-?“ the Kaiju began to clarify, beady eyes squinting skeptically. Was this his idea of a joke? Surely he was joking. He was, what, a kid? Asking a forty-seven-year-old woman to accompany him to a fireworks show? Teruko scrutinized her shop-neighbor as dug around in his pocket, before ultimately procuring—a small, fake flower. A little red rose. Any snide remarks died immediately in her throat. Her heart panged. A flower? For… her? Teruko pushed the door open a bit wider—not just a seam through which she poked her head, but pushed it wide open. Sure, she had dated plenty. But none of those suitors had ever bought her flowers. She’d received flowers at awards ceremonies and in thanks, but… nothing like this. Never spontaneous. For once, Teruko was stripped of her usual bristly boisterousness. And as Enda continued talking—laying his opinions of Teruko bare, and skirted around his feelings, his respect for her need for space—the kaiju lifted her gaze, golden-eyed gaze interplaying with his own. For once, her eyes that could cut to a man’s core were soft, if not intrigued. She liked his earnestness—far better than she liked his eccentric showmanship. This didn’t feel like an act. Teruko steadied the youth’s hands with one of her own, accepting the rose by plucking it with thumb and forefinger. The rose was even more dwarfed in her taloned grasp. “You don’t have to disappear, Enda,” Teruko remarked, twirling the rose in her grasp. It was a nylon thing, not real… but still sweet. Sweet enough to make her drop formalities, momentarily, “You have really great timing, actually. I’m actually just finishing closing shop.”A lie. She was about halfway done with tidying the place. But… how could she say no to a guy who’d laid himself so prone like that? Maybe she’d like the Enda that she “actually got to know” rather than the fanboy!Enda or the fighting-Akiva!Enda. She lowered her hand from Enda’s, raking at the scales of her jaw with her claws. “I’d love to go to the Hanabi Festival with you,” the kaiju insisted, her gaze cutting bashfully sideways, “Just let me, uh… change out of my work-clothes, yeah? Meet me at the door between our shops in twenty?”With his pardon, the kaiju would toss him a smile and a wink, before closing the shop door once again and locking it. She disregarded the abandoned cleaning supplies, cutting towards the door at the edge of the dining room. Beyond it, a hall that connected the bakery to the adjoining business (currently being used as storage for the bakery), the bathrooms, and the lift/stairs towards the residential areas upstairs. Teruko’s heart was hammering as she boarded the industrial-grade lift, twirling the rose, surveying it closer, smiling to herself. What in god’s green earth had compelled Enda Halloran to show-up with a fake rose and a request for a night on the town? Had throwing him into the wall in the alleyways fractured his skull? Teruko winced. Maaaaybe she should apologize for that one. The lift ascended past the second and third floors, coming to a halt on the fourth. Teruko disembarked, waddling the short distance to her own apartment. More importantly, what would she wear? Was this date? Or just an outing between neighbors? Did she even still have “date” worthy outfits? She unlocked the door to her apartment, huffing as she wrestled her apron, and her button-down shirt, off. She hoped to god she had something vaguely cute—or at least, vaguely female-presenting. Shit. === Roughly twenty minutes later, on the dot, Teruko emerged from the public entrance to the apartments above her bakery, dressed in a fresh outfit—high-waisted jeans, a white peasant blouse, and a gauzy, floral-printed cardigan. One of the very few “effeminate” styles that Teruko possessed. She also toted a bag the seemed to be the same material as a picnic-basket, though it was woven into a disc-shape. Those were the words he was expecting to venomously sprawl out of her mouth so he would get the goddamn hint already. Why would someone like Teruko want him to stay? Even his gut was trying to tell him this was the worst idea in the history of ever! The scene of her slamming him against the wall and looking like she was trying really hard not to go feral or something played in his head for a moment....but that had to be a bad dream, right? It wasn't real...that didn't happen, she didn't know...right?

The slight gust from the door being quickly opened was enough for his hair to dance about the breeze for a moment as he checked back in with the rest of the world. Right...he was doing something dumb, wasn't he? Still, he was shocked that the woman of his dreams, his ideal type right there before him didn't slam the door in silence. As though she silently screamed out wait, don't go, he was admittedly in a state of shock. honey you're familiar THE WOMAN GRACED ENDA'S PRAISE with a smile and a breathed laugh. Really? Adorable? Hot? This boy was too much! With his grandiose words and vaguely scene-kid aesthetic going, combined with the gentlemanly offer of his hand… it really tipped Teruko into a feeling of giddiness. She was trying to keep her guard up—after all, she was almost fifty, she needed to maintain some semblance of dignity—but Enda was funny and charming and that was enough to start chipping away at the woman’s bristly outer shell.
“Flatterer,” she chastised him, though her voice was entirely devoid of vitriol.
Teruko slid her plump, taloned hand into his thin, bony one, giving it a light squeeze.
“Holding hands with the girl next door,” Teruko teased, “What will the neighbors think?”
Even if Enda was from Japan, his sensibilities were truly international—so free with his affections. But Teruko would humor him. It’d been… how long since someone had held hands with her? Easily since her days as an actress, back when dating her held some clout.
That said… she was still ninety-percent sure he was gay, so… did it really even matter how friendly they were with one another? Did this count as being too friendly?
Looking rather like the cat who’d eaten a canary, the kaiju smiled secretively at nothing in particular. She tucked her arm behind Enda’s so that she was almost flush with him, her shoulder brushing his.
“I’m sure it will be!” she agreed, closing her eyes, “Gracious, I haven’t been to a hanabi festival in years… between vigilantism and running a business…”
And before that, actress-ing… Teruko had really only gone to festivals when she was in college, besides New Years visits to shrines.
“It’ll be a nice change of pace,” Teruko concluded. Prayerfully, there would be no drama at the festival that required vigilante intervention.
“What’s your favorite part of festivals?” she asked conversationally.

honey you're familiar ALRIGHT, THIS WAS... REALLY NICE. It was like the slate had been wiped clean, between the two of them. Enda clutching her hand with delight, and then pressing against her side as they sauntered down the street. And then something ruined it.
Teruko had no way of intuiting that she had been the one to ruin the mood—she just felt the boy by her side go stiff, and when Teruko slowed her stride to look sidelong at him, Enda laughed without mirth, a high, panicked sound. The kaiju’s expression slackened a little, then went weird at the edges.
“Y-yeah, sadly,” Teruko agreed, “Youth is wasted on the young.”
She puffed her cheeks out, exhaling slowly. How had it gone so awkward, so quickly? Right at the drop of a hat? Part of her was tempted to ask… but the other part of her didn’t want to know. So, instead, the kaiju fell quiet. Her hold slackened slightly on Enda’s arm, so if he wanted to pry himself free, he could. Maybe she was being too chummy with him. It was easy to get wrapped-up in the kid’s energy though.
The “someone who means a bunch to him” didn’t go without notice, though. It brought a soft smile back to Teruko’s lips again. Someone who meant a bunch, huh? God, somehow that didn’t make their recent history any better.
Her thumb brushed over is, just feathery enough to be chalked up to “reflex” or “idle motion”. She kept her gaze forward as she listened.
“Hm, me?” she mused aloud as the question was lobbed back at her. Teruko rubbed her chin ponderously, trying to give her response just as much thought, “Well… the fireworks, most of all. I like how you can feel the fireworks to your core, you know? They’re so big and powerful.”
It made Teruko feel small—which for someone who was usually a meter taller than most, and six times heavier, was such an awesome feeling.
“And I loooove the food. But that tends to get expensive fast.”
Unsurprisingly, a woman of her stature could put food away pretty easily.
Her tail curled a bit as she concluded, “I like to see all the pretty kimono, too. I'm not one for... glamour, but I appreciate the work that others put-in, you know? And kimono are so elegant.”

honey you're familiar THE GUY WAS A SWEETHEART, rolling with her idle remarks and lobbing compliments back at her-- related to fireworks on a spiritual level? Hardly, she found them humbling. But it was… a veiled compliment. Or perhaps a recognition of the woman's brute strength.
So Teruko gave that a noncommittal, "Yeah."
He didn't stop there, though-- he insisted that this evening was on him, and that not only could Enda foot the bill for food, he'd see about getting her a kimono for next time. What was with all of these grandiose gestures?
"Y-you really don't have to," the woman insisted mildly, sounding breathless. Neither of these promises was exactly economical? And running a small business didn't generate a whole lot of income, truth be told. She'd hate to impose, "Your company is plenty for me."
They were big promises for a guy who "just wanted to get to know you" at a Hanabi Festival. Particularly when you had the resources to treat him. The words did make her head spin a little, though. In a pleasant way. There were arguably few people who had ever treated Teruko so kindly. Perhaps none. And even if Enda was just trying to make amends, in his own way, Teruko appreciated his kindness and his enthusiasm.
Her polite refusal seemed to knock the wind out of his sails, and the man insisted that he thought she'd rock a kimono.
"You're too kind," the kaiju murmured modestly. Then, attempting to bring back some of the guy's spirit, she proposed, "Perhaps next time we can both wear kimono?"
Honestly, Teruko felt so unwieldy in kimono. Like a metaphorical pig in a dress. But she could humor the optimistic twenty-something.
She was a pragmatist, but she wasn't cynical. Not about this, anyways.
And then, Enda asked the million dollar question. Why had she agreed to come with him? Wasn't she mad?
The kaiju sighed. Closing her eyes. It was bound to come up eventually. There was a pregnant pause. Of course he thought she was mad. Only angry people slammed others into walls. Shame coiled around the woman's throat and clenched unforgivingly.
"I wasn't mad," her voice creaked. In her periphery, she could see that Enda was looking at her, but Teruko couldn't bring herself to look back at him. Her eyes would lay bare all that her heart was trying to hide, "I was… scared."
It was embarrassing to say.
"Not of you, mind you. But for Akiva. I. Uh. Grossly misread the situation. I thought you were trying to hurt him."
She sighed.
"He explained everything, though. I realized I was wrong. And I am really, really sorry."
Her hand tightened around his, and Teruko bowed her head, a grimace flickering across her expression.
"So I guess tonight was… convenient? I couldn't think of how to apologize and was so embarrassed. Like. I dunno. You show-up asking for a second chance, and I felt like I was getting a second chance to? To talk to you and get to know you like a normal person? And make-up for… erm… slamming you into a wall…"
Teruko broke-off awkwardly, scratching the scales on the back of her neck with her free hand. Now it was her turn tu laugh without humor or delight.
"I really am sorry."
Mutants already had trouble with being dehumanized in the media-- as a formal celebrity, Teruko knew-- and stunts like what she pulled did nothing to paint her in a more flattering light.
