I've scratched myself on the thorn of a rose [Part of the Token Beach Episode]The sun was moving steadily across the sky, but the passing of time did little to dull the excitement of the students from U.A. There was still children running up and down the beach or surfing the waves or making sandcastles; it was quite the sight, especially taking into consideration that this was the first trip in the history of the school. These were the world's first generation of "heroes" through and through. Yet here they were, young and innocently having fun, without thinking about their futures or the trials they'd face.
For now they were still children.
Hachi had gotten up from the chair she'd flown down to a little while ago to stretch her legs and wings. She walked along the strip of sand that just touched the oncoming waves, the foam from the water just brushing against her the tips of her toe-claws. Compound eyes kept watch over the students as she went along. Was she doing this right? She hadn't really been speaking to the students since she'd seen Chise and Elizabeth in the lodge. Should she be approaching students? Asking if they're alright, if they need anything...but they were teenagers. Surely they knew to come to her if they needed anything, or if something was wrong.
Unless they were unnerved by her. Hachi unconsciously hovered a little lower at the thought. Elizabeth had done well to avoid looking so outright, but she had definitely been startled by Hachi's appearance. Most were upon first meeting her, even if they warmed to it later on. She was used to that. Thirty-three years of being a human-sized bee didn't exactly lead to a sheltered mind or thin skin. Still. These were her students, people she was told to help shape and grow into future heroes in time. It stung more than usual.
Perhaps she should do some socializing.

While Miku was trying to learn how to surf, she noticed the General Studies Teacher alone. She was... different and, Miku was curious.
She told Sean to wait a moment, as Miku approached the seemingly lonely teacher
"E-excuse me. But...um...are you ok?" she clumsily and shyly asked
"Are you ok? Are you OK!? What kind of a question is that?! Of course she's ok" she mentally cursed herself as she realized that she asked a stupid question. But then stopped when she realized who that reminded her off
Miku thought that the teacher seemed lonely and with Miku being sort of an unintentional Teachers Pet, of course she went right away to check on the teacher. She could go back to surfing any time she wants. Then again, she could invite the teacher too, right?
It was strange to Miku, approaching a huge human sized bee. One one hand, she was a bit nervous, because she was a bee woman, while Miku was a plant girl. But on the other hand, she was taught to like bugs and not fear them. But even so, with all that education, Miku had like a slight fear of insects, mostly because of her own Quirk, which is flowery and plant like. She had no idea how people with insect quirks would react to her

Sean was excited, both to surf some more, and to show Miku how to surf. Suddenly, Miku asked Sean to wait a moment. Sean didn't mind, of course. If there was something Miku wanted or needed to do, then that was fine. He just wanted everyone to have a good time. Still, he was curious as to where Miku was headed, so he watched where she was going.
Apparently, Miku wanted the same thing, as he saw her head to the General Studies teacher. Miku probably to ask if she was okay. Sean liked that about Miku. Her kindness and caring nature was admirable in his opinion. The General Studies teacher did seem a bit lonely. Was it perhaps because she was essentially a human bee? Now Sean wanted to go see if she was okay as well. After all, even if he wasn't used to seeing people with mutation quirks all the time, Sean wasn't the type of person to judge someone based on looks alone. And even if she was fine and didn't want to be bothered, saying hi couldn't hurt. Who knows, maybe she could join in with Sean and Miku on the surfing fun!
He headed over to where both Miku and the teacher were. He greeted her in his usual fashion: a big smile and a waving of his hand. "Yo teach! Um, I mean hi, Miss Tsutsuji!" Sean was way too used to getting yelled at by other teachers for being informal. He didn't know whether she was like that or not, so he thought it was best to play it safe. He decided to get straight to the point. "I was just showing Miku how to surf. You're more than welcome to join us if you want to. It's really fun!" He hoped that he wasn't being a bother to her, but he also wanted to make sure that she was having fun like everyone else was.

Hachi's head raised from the shore and sea foam at the sound of a soft voice coming over the wavers. One of the students from outside her class was approaching her. What was this one's name? Blonde hair, green eyes, short stature...no obvious clues. However a soft floral scent wafting off from her skin helped Hachi put the pieces together. "Miku Hanabira-kun, isn't it? I'm quite fine, but thank you for taking the time to ask me." Her small mouth formed a smile. "How are yo--"
Another student came up behind Miku, this one slightly more recognizable just from his appearance and her notes. Not many of the students had blue hair. "Hello, Sean Mizushima-kun. Ah, surfing sounds like fun. I've never tried it myself, and I'm not properly dressed for it," she looked down, clawed fingers touching the cloth wrap around her waist, "But I would certainly be happy to stand in the shallows and watch you two try it out."
Her mood felt lighter knowing that two of the students--not even ones from her class--were willing to speak to her. It felt almost silly of her to be so worried in the first place. These were the heroes of tomorrow. It wouldn't be in their nature to be afraid of those with mutation Quirks. They needed to be kind and brave.
You would be really proud of them, my dearest.
"Have you done much surfing, Mizushima-kun?"

Miku was happy that Sean came with her to check on the General Studies Teacher. Gosh, he really was nice. She would have hugged him, but that would have been weird and awkward. So Miku refrained from doing her usual...expression.
"Oh! He is a pro surfer! He's gonna teach me how to surf now! I am so excited!" Miku said happily.
This was something she waited for. Sure she had some problems and turmoil. But beyond that was plenty and plenty of love. And thus she wanted to learn more about the Hawaiian culture, because she loved it. And that meant that she wanted to learn how to surf. Among plenty other things that is.
Actually thinking about it! Both Sean AND Lani are Hawaiians. Miku wondered if they knew eachother from before UA. Or if they surfed together? Or if they competed and saw which is the better surfer. Miku imagined the two probably tied and were equally awesome.
After that inner fangirling. She let the teacher and Sean talk, or at least thats when she started paying attention to their conversation that they started WHILE she was mentally fangirling. Miku was quiet and let them talk and only spoke after she was spoken to.

Well that was a bummer. It would have been cool to see Miss Tsutsuji surf, but it was understandable why she couldn't. "Aw. Well that's okay, Miss Tsutsuji. I just don't want you to be bored. I'll try to show you how fun surfing can be, and one day, you can surf too!" When she asked him about his surfing, he replied, "I surf all the time! My mom taught me at a young age, and I've been practicing for years."
Miku calling him a pro surfer made him laugh nervously. "I don't know about that, Miku. I'm good, but I'm not an expert by any means. Still, that's very nice of you to say. Thanks!" Truth be told, Sean did screw up sometimes. Just like with his quirk, any great enough distraction would cause him to lose concentration and fail. He got better at tuning out distractions over the years, but it could still happen.
As he looked at his surfboard, Sean realized that Miku didn't have a surfboard of her own. How was he gonna teach her if she didn't have one to use? Thinking about it, Sean didn't really need to be surfing next to her to show her how it was done. He decided to hand his surfboard over to Miku. "Here. I kinda forgot that you didn't have a surfboard on you, so just borrow mine for now." Before she could object or say anything, he added, "It's cool. I trust you with my board. And I can swim really fast, so if you fall off the board, I can get to you in seconds. But you don't need to worry about that just yet. First, I'm gonna show you how to stay balanced on the surfboard." Sean was looking forward to this.

The two exchanged a friendly disagreement about Sean's status as a "pro" surfer, to which Hachi hummed in amusement. Would it be ridiculous to expect a "Surfing Hero" at some point in the future, possibly sooner rather than later if Sean thought up the idea? It felt like right now the world was still too new to the concept of heroes as a career to think of the strange, silly, or even fun ways one could market themselves. Maybe someday it would change, or maybe it already was? Solenn and herself had been quite a strange pair.
"I'll hover near you as well, should something happen. And just to offer any assistance I may," Hachi offered with a small nod. Balancing sounded easy enough. Useful, too, to learn how to balance oneself for climbing and running purposes. Hmm. Ideas for class, maybe.

Sean gave her his surfboard, he tried to reassure her that he can swim really fast. Normally she'd be nervous, but she trusted Sean. Plus miss Hachi promissed to be there too, saying that she will hover if Miku needed some extra assistance
"T-Thank you, everyone" Miku then politely thanked em because she was taken aback by their niceness.
Well, now it seemed like it should be lesson time, so Miku asked Sean "Ok. How do we start our lesson?"
She smiled and looked at Sean. Miku was excited she was FINALLY gonna learn how to surf. She was even holding a surfboard for the first time ever. She now made sure to listen to Sean and what he had to say

Before he let Miku go into the ocean, it was important for her to practice her balance and posture on the board. "The first thing you should do is lay the surfboard down on the sand. It might sound confusing, but let me explain. Before you begin riding the waves, you should start with practice on the beach. That way, when you hit the water, you'll know what to do" Sean did his best to explain slowly and carefully so that Miku would understand what he was saying. He wasn't a bad teacher by any means, but he was far from a perfect instructor.
After Miku put the surfboard on the sand, Sean next instructed her to lie down on top of it face-down, hold the sides of the surfboard while keeping her arms in a "chicken wings" like posture and her toes touching the tail of the surfboard. After that, he instructed her to center her body on the board and keep her head and chest up. "That posture right there is how you'll approach the oncoming wave. Once you get used to that, then we'll move on to how to balance yourself on the board while standing up."
Sean wasn't worried. He had faith in Miku. She was gonna do just fine.

Miku very carefully listened to Sean. And according to him the first thing you should do is lay the surfboard down on the sand. And thats what she did. She placed the surfboard on the sand. Miku didnt even question him, but she fully trusted him. She listened to Sean explain that before going to the actual waves, that she should learn the basics on the safety of land first.
He then told her to lie down on top of it face-down, hold the sides of the surfboard while keeping her arms in a 'chicken wings' like posture and her toes touching the tail of the surfboard. And as he spoke, Miku followed his instructions and did what he said.
After that, he instructed her to center her body on the board and keep her head and chest up. It was like a pose on how to approach a sweet oncoming wave. Miku then tried to center her body and kept her head and chest up
"Like this?" she asked Sean shyly and a bit unsure if she was doing this right. She felt she would be a bit more confident if she also had a visual example, but sadly she didnt have a surfboard of her own, so they had to make do

So far, Miku was doing everything correctly. There wasn't really anything that needed correcting. Either she was a quick learner, or she was paying very close attention. It was admirable either way. "Yeah, just like that. When you enter the water, just wade until it's waist deep, then get on your board just like that. Then once the oncoming wave catches you, just get up, balance yourself, and enjoy the ride."
Of course, it was important to teach her exactly how to balance herself properly on the surfboard. "Before attempting to catch any waves though, you need to know how to balance yourself on the surfboard once the wave hits. Before we go in the water, let's practice surfing standing up on the beach. I'll show you the posture." Sean imagined that he was on a surfboard. He put his left foot forward, opened his arms and shoulders as if he were balancing himself on a surfboard, and bent his knees. Sean probably looked ridiculous doing this, but he didn't mind embarrassing himself if it meant helping Miku learn to surf properly. "It doesn't really matter whether you put your left foot forward or your right. Just go with whatever you're more comfortable with."
Sean then got down on the sand and did the lying down posture. As he explained to Miku what to do, he was showing her what to do by doing it himself. "Once the wave hits, you turn whichever foot is going to be in the back sideways so that your ankle touches the deck of the surfboard. Next, you lift your head and chest up, and then slide your front foot forward to your chest line. Then slowly let go of the board, and stand up. Open your shoulders and arms for balance, like this. As you move in, look at the beach as you ride, and bend your knees. Be sure to add a little weight to your front leg. And that's basically it. You're surfing!" He paused to look at Miku, and added "Did you get all that? It's okay if you need me to repeat something for you."
Once Miku got this down, there was only one more thing she needed to learn how to do. Then, it was surfing time!

She listened carefully to Sean. And she watched his stand or pose or posture. He was pretending to be on a surfboard. She tried to follow him. But couldnt. She got the first part that he was explaining. Miku put her right foot forward, opened her arms and shoulders and bent her knees
"This?" she asked
She was a bit confused on his explanation mostly because it was ton of words. Maybe if he showed her. Perhaps the teacher could hold Miku and fly near Sean so she could see the action up close? No no. She mentally shook her head.

Sean was watching Miku closely to see if she was doing it right. So far, it looked like she was paying attention and doing as he instructed. There wasn't all that much that needed to be corrected. "Yeah, that's pretty good. You're really getting the hang of this, Miku! Just practice a bit more and you're golden."
Still, there was something Sean was wondering about that bothered him a little. Did Miku really understand everything that he was saying? He didn't know if she was fine, or was just pretending to get everything he said. Maybe actions spoke louder than words? After all, some people find it easier to learn when they see the action for themselves, rather than reading or being told about it. In any case, it didn't hurt to try.
"Hey Miku, could you hand me back my board for a bit? I realized that maybe I'm going about it the wrong way. I think I'm not being as effective of a teacher just telling you what to do. Maybe I should show you instead." He then looked at Miss Tsutsuji. He didn't know much about her quirk or its limitations. Still, if it wasn't a problem, then Sean had an idea that might help out Miku even more. "Yo teach...um sorry. Miss Tsutsuji." Sean needed to stop being so casual towards teachers. It was a bad habit of his, and he didn't want her to think that he had no respect. "If it's alright, could you carry Miku so that she can watch me up close while I surf? I'm not the best at teaching, and it might be a better learning experience for her if she sees it with her own eyes."

This was nice. Hachi hovered nearby as Sean taught Miku about the basics of surfing, silently watching them with curious eyes. The whole process was interesting and reminded her of when she was first learning her fighting style. Admittedly, surfing was probably much more fun than having to learn how to kick at a certain angle for the fiftieth time, and one was predominately more recreational than the other, but the comparison wasn't too off. Sean was a good teacher, and Miku was eager to learn. They would make a good team.
But perhaps it was too early to be thinking that way.
She tilted her head when Sean asked for his board back a second time and then turned to address her. She didn't mind his interesting way of addressing her. It was informal, but nothing punishment worthy. What was it that he wanted to ask her, though? Ahh. To help him demonstrate surfing through example, with her using her flying abilities to keep Miku close to see it.
"I would not be opposed to it," she spoke with a nod, and then approached them again so she stood next to Miku. She towered over the much smaller girl, who still gave off a nice floral scent, but Hachi tried to smile as non-threateningly as possible as she held out a claw. "I cannot fly for extended periods of time. I believe that this won't take too long, though. Are you alright with me picking you up and carrying you, Hanabira-kun?"

Sean really was great. It was as if he read her mind. An example was a perfect thing. And to think her little ridiculous idea was actually coming true right before her eyes. It made her smile. So she handed back the surfboard
"I dont mind it, Teacher!" she happily said
Although, she didnt know that she couldnt fly for a long time. But maybe the example will be short enough for the General Studies Teacher
Considering she gave the surfboard to Sean and agreed to be carried by the Teacher, there was nothing for Miku to do, but to wait
