just when things started seeming "normal" MONTHS PRIOR, THERE HAD BEEN A BUST of Mizutani-kai members-- Kenji had read about it on his phone. Then, a few days later, a text from one of his half-siblings lit-up Kenji's phone.
There was no excitement or celebration. Just quiet relief. If Dad was in prison, he couldn't find and hurt Kenji. For one in his life, the redhead felt safe.
In the dead of night, the dormitory p.a. went off.
"Students, meet in the first floor Common area. We are entering a lockdown drill and need to do a headcount. Repeat-- the Disciplinary Committee is doing a headcount in the first floor common area. Report immediately."
Groggy with sleep, the redhead rolled out of bed. His hair stuck out at odd angles, one part dented from being pressed into a pillow. Kenji sloughed out of bed, not bothering to put on shoes. He grabbed his biggest hoodie, which hung halfway down to his knees, and disembarked.
Kenji looked like he was wearing his older brother's clothes, with how big his pajamas were-- oversized hoodie and t-shirt, oversized linen pajama bottoms. He shuffled along groggily, joining the flow of students. They wound their way down the stairs, downward and further downward, until they were on the ground floor. The din of voices was murmurous and confused, and Disciplinary Committee kids were standing at the front of the room, calling for order.
Kenji searched the room for Rei, but didn't see him yet. He saw a couple of teachers, their backs turned in favor of watching t.v.
"Hey, sensei!"
No response. Kenji navigated the crowd towards the front of the room, straining to see what they were seeing.
"OUTBREAK FROM FUCHU SUPERMAX LED BY NEW VILLAINESS – STAY INSIDE AT ALL COSTS," scrolled continuously across the bottom of the screen in bold-face, showing a soundless clip of the woman speaking animatedly.
Kenji's blood ran cold. The camera panned over the crowd, showing uproarious prisoners, firing-off quirks and guns alike. Then the screen clipped to a map, almost like a traffic camera, showing the progress of the prisoners on their flight from the prison. They were heading for Tokyo.
The redheaded teen stiffened, frozen like a deer in the headlights. Sound seemed to swirl around him unintelligibly, confused. Like it all felt so far. A simmering sickness mounted in his throat.
All of the prisoners were loose?
Shinji Murano-- Kenji's dad-- was on the streets again?
A hand touched Kenji's arm, and the teen flinched, whirling on the interloper.

School life for Misa was starting to become a schedule that she was used to. She woke up early to start a workout, went to class, helped her classmates with homework occasionally. She had good success with befriending most of the upperclassmen she had met too. Something that her peers seemed to struggle with. All the more reason to stay out of that group chat in her mind. She had started to get a sleep schedule that was healthy for her and made her feel honestly rested. Today had been a rather strenuous day. She had done an intense workout in the morning and then even a spar with an upperclassmen. That always left her aching for her bed. Today was far from different, and Misa was in a deep slumber.
Until the dormitory P. A. system went off and woke the entire floor of students up. What the heck? A lock down drill in the middle of the night? As much as Misa understood the importance of knowing what to do during these types of emergencies, it seemed a little irresponsible to hold them in the middle of the night. Sleep was healthy for students! Didn't they know that?
In her daze, she quickly threw a sweatshirt on. She stayed in her night shorts, thinking this thing would be over quickly. She wouldn't have time to get chilly. She grabbed her glasses, unashamed of the fact this would be the first time her peers saw her in them. Prism was gone, probably already there or staying at home for the night. Misa would be sure to inform the teachers. She didn't notice her disheveled hair in the mirror as she dragged her feet passed it. She didn't think about how the school was not, in fact, run by fools who didn't know the importance of sleep. No, she was too tired to realize that this might actually be something real.
So, when she made it to the room and took a quick look around to see where she should be and noticed the announcement on the screen ahead she took a moment of stunned silence. What was this? Part of the drill? One glance at the stoic and serious teachers made her feel like this was something far more real. No, there's no way that could have happened? On instinct, her eyes scanned around looking for her classmates to make sure they were safe and sound. She only spotted one messy tuff of familiar hair. Kenji was here! Good!
It took some shoving and elbowing, but she made her way over to her classmate. They had never been close, but a familiar face would be nice in a time like this right? She reached out to touch his arm and he flinched strangely, spinning around quick enough to make Misa herself jump back.
"K-Kenji-san? It's just me... Misa, from class. I... well, I was a little scared and wanted to make sure you were okay. Uhm... are you... going to be okay? You look on edge."
Yeah, that was putting it lightly.

just when things started seeming "normal" THE GLASSES CONFUSED THE REDHEAD—at first he thought a stranger was addressing him, but they knew his name—and a stranger knowing his name raised so many red-flags, particularly with how panicked he presently was. When he looked past the glasses, though—into the bright, blue eyes and the familiar, short brown hair, he realized that he was looking at none other than the class rep.
Well, Vice President. But Kenji wouldn’t dignify Edward with any higher title.
“Su…zuki-san,” he realized aloud, sounding… embarrassed. Kenji turned back towards the television, his eyes distractedly lingering on the LCD screen. A silver-haired, pink-eyed woman was addressing the viewer from above, but her words were muted—the camera panned over the crowd of armed criminals—then cut back to the current diaspora of prisoners freed.
A pit formed at the base of Kenji’s stomach. He tried to take a steadying breath, but it shuddered in his throat. He registered the question a few moments after it was asked.
“What?” he asked, quickly, “Oh, yeah. I’m fine.”
His gaze went towards the t.v. again. An idle hand went to the front of his night-shirt, gripping the fabric of his collar in a way that betrayed his actual feelings. The teen that was usually so full of mirth was unusually serious. A frown tugged the corners of his mouth down. Anyone who knew Kenji knew he was never this dour—something was clearly amiss. Even if he said nothing was.
“That’s… crazy, right?” Kenji said, gesturing towards the t.v. with his free hand, squinting towards it, “One villain gets the idea to let all the others out, and everything goes to shit. Fuckin’ wild…”
The television must have been too bright for his tired eyes, for Kenji bowed his head and pinched the bridge of his nose, scrunching his eyes shut. Oh yeah, totally fine. Nothing out of the usual here.

Misa could tell that she wasn't immediately recognized by her classmate, but didn't feel the need to let him know who she was. She had a feeling that he was going to get there, and was just a little shell shocked. Not surprising, with the current events taken into consideration. Not surprising at all. Misa herself was still out of sorts, despite the fact that she felt a surge of adrenaline in her sore muscles telling her to take care of her classmate that had looked so distraught earlier. "Hey, no need for formalities. We're classmates! You can just call me Misa, alright?"
As the lady on the television spoke, Misa tried to flash a reassuring smile to her red haired classmate. Kenji assured her he was fine, but it didn't take a psychologist to see through the obvious farce of it all. What she knew about the boy assured her that she shouldn't bring attention to any weakness that he showed. No, she didn't want to make him feel emasculated as he squeezed at the collar of his shirt like it was a lifeline and he was lost at sea. Instead, she stepped closer to him, enough that their shoulders were almost touching as they looked up at the screen and watched out for any important updates.
"Crazy... yeah, that's putting it lightly, I think. It's hard to believe that there were villains out there capable of this... we have so many talented heroes and teachers, it kind of... made you feel really safe a lot, didn't it?" Misa mused aloud, but quickly regretted it as she realized that it was probably the furthest thing from reassuring to her classmate. "It makes me feel better that talented students like you are at such a prestigious school like this. We need to try extra hard to make sure that we're strong enough to stop things like this from ever happening."
A bit more optimistic, but still not the best at reassuring she imagined. It was hard to understand the problem when she wasn't even a hundred percent sure what it was. She had to assume it was a general anxiety over something this terrible happening... but the look in his eyes made her question if it might have been something more. Either way, she had no plans to leave her comrade like this. She reached her hand forward and tentatively grabbed his, squeezing it softly.
"Would you... mind terribly if I stayed with you? Until this dies down, at the least..."

just when things started seeming "normal" IN LIGHT OF ALL OF THIS, Misako adopted a friendly tone—reassuring Kenji that he didn’t “need to use formalities with his classmate”, and to call her Misa. Kenji’s frown deepened, genuine sadness prickling at his eyes. First name basis’s were reserved for friends. As far as Kenji was concerned, his only friend was Rei. He exhaled sharply, a skeptical sort of noise.
“Sure, I can try.”
Misako edged closer. Kenji didn’t step away. His gaze flicked to their almost-touching shoulders, but quickly cleaved-on to the television once again. There was a rawness in his throat—his breaths were growing short. Kenji tipped his head, hiding his his eyes behind his bangs. He tried to steady himself by looking at the carpet.
Misako’s optimistic ramblings whirled around the redhead’s skull, dizzying and unintelligible. If Heroes and Teachers made them safe, then how could they let a thing like this happen? How were the students at U.A. any different?
“Yeah,” the teen agreed distractedly, not really cognizant of what he was agreeing with.
Kenji’s breath hitched. All of it was bullshit—the sense of security that teachers and heroes provided, the blind optimism over being able to “be better than the first generation of heroes” by getting stronger.
Kenji rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand, and his hand came away wet.
He wished Mosa was here.
He was going to puke, he could feel the sickness simmering in his throat.
His Dad would find him—take him—sell him.
Something brushed against Kenji’s hand, and the redhead winced, jarred from his thoughts. His cheeks glimmered in the light of the television.
It was still just Misako.
Kenji wiped his hand on his shirt, then bashfully returned his hand to Misa’s squeezing it weakly. Fat tears were rolling down his cheeks now, and he sniffled slightly.
Kenji drew the hood of his oversized sweater, pulling it low over his eyes. He grit his teeth, his shoulders trembling.
“Please, don’t tell anyone,” he whispered.
If only Mosa was there. Or Charles.
Dimly, Kenji wondered if Charles had been taken to Fuchu—if there was a chance of them finding one another. They would protect him. But the threat of his father was far more frightening than that.
“Especially not Eddie.”
That bespectacled bastard would get so much mileage out of knowing that Kenji was so weak—at least, in Kenji’s understanding of who Eddie was.
Kenji used his free hand—this time concealed in a baggy sleeve, to wipe at his eyes again.
“I’m really scared, Misa.”

Misa wasn't really sure if her words of optimism were helping Kenji or not. The boy was focused heavily on the TV and even when he replied with the simple, 'yeah', Misa was pretty sure the boy had no idea what he was agreeing to or any clue what Misa had been talking about. The girl felt useless in that moment, which was a terrible thing for a hero but in a situation like this it felt unavoidable. Maybe she could take a class about how to reassure people who were upset?
Was there even a class for something like this?
When he pulled his hand away from hers, she frowned and braced herself to be told to go away. When it didn't happen, and instead she felt her hand held again she brightened a bit. She looked up at him, and was completely shocked to see that he had thick tears rolling down his eyes. For a moment, there was absolute silence as Misa felt her own heart break for the boy in front of her. She didn't realize that her eyes were starting to form their own balls of salty tears in the corners.
"I-I won't, I promise." She said, her throat feeling tight and her breathing quickening. "I won't tell Eddy, I swear. I'm sorry, Kenji-san. I'm sorry."
She wanted to break down here with the boy, to just let it out, but when his meek words came out and told her he was really scared she swallowed hard, the tears that had run down her cheeks remaining silent and hopefully unnoticed as she squeezed his hand tightly to make sure that he knew he wasn't alone. That he was with someone who cared about him.
"I know it's scary, Kenji-san, but... we'll get through it. Together. I'll stick with you until this all dies down, okay? Nothing's going to happen, not here."
In the back of her mind, she wondered if she was lying about that. She hoped not. She also wondered about her classmates that weren't here right now. Were they okay? Sure, it was probably safe here in the lock down with teachers and heroes aware of their location... but out there? How many of those escaped villains had a grudge against heroes and students? Too many, likely.
"You're not alone." She promised him, hugging his arm to make sure that he understood her. "Nobody here is going to let anything happen. Not to you, not to anyone."

just when things started seeming "normal" KENJI'S THROAT TIGHTENED WHEN MISA APOLOGIZED. Why was she apologizing? This wasn’t her fault! She didn’t even know why he was crying! In a way… he guessed it was kind-of comforting. Even without knowing the whole story, someone felt for him. Despite all of his antics, someone cared enough to comfort him. That was… nice, actually.
Thanks, Misa.
He didn’t have the words to say it, but he felt it. Maybe if he stopped blubbering and whimpering like a baby, and could find the courage to admit he appreciated it, he would. Kenji tugged at his hood, his shoulders shuddering. She gripped his hand tighter.
Misako murmured reassurances, insisting that she wouldn’t leave him until off this died-down. The redhead nodded lamely. That made him feel… marginally safer. Even if something did happen, at U.A., at least he had someone watching his back.
The teen butted his head against Misako’s shoulder as she hugged his arm, his expression crumpling as he tried to steel himself. Why would this time be any different from when he was younger, huh? Schools were supposed to protect you, yes, and so were heroes. But for how long was Shinji Murano, Kenji’s father, able to run unchecked? How many unimaginable horrors was he able to enact on his own flesh-and-blood?
“L-let’s find somewhere to sit, yeah?” Kenji muttered huskily, tugging at Misako’s arm.
Preferably somewhere to the side, where someone didn’t see him sniveling and clinging to his classmate’s arm. After some weaving through the gathering crowd, Kenji found a bare patch of wall towards the back of the room, off to one side.
He released Misako’s arm to take a seat—leaning against the wall and then sliding into a seated position. He gathered his knees to his chest, wrapping his arms around his legs, and resting his chin, there.
Kenji kept his gaze pointed just beyond his knees, towards an unoccupied patch of floor.
Whether Misa joined him on the floor, or remained standing, Kenji would murmur to her as soon as she was settled.
“…you remember the first day of class?” he asked distractedly, now making a point of trying to not look at the t.v., “And how we were talking about why we wanted to be heroes…?”

Watching her classmate- no, she thought of Kenji as a friend now, even if he didn't feel the same- watching her friend break was difficult for the young student. It hurt to feel his pain as it were her own, and it hurt to feel helpless in the face of it. It hurt to know that when she became a hero- a hero for real- she'd be expected to handle situations like this. To protect people from hurt like this. Hurt that felt so deep it was untouchable and couldn't even be seen.
As he crumbled into her shoulder, sobbing uncontrollably, Misa did her best to shield him from prying eyes. No need to put his pain on display like this. Instead, she hugged him back and pulled his hood up to hide his noticeable hair color. Yeah, she was confident that this would be their secret as she looked around at the sea of faces that were all glued to the news with bated breath. Her hand soothingly ran up and down his back. There wasn't nothing she could do, she told herself, she could be here for him. She could accept his burden as her own. With a hard swallow, she steeled her own nerves and decided she wouldn't cry. She would be a rock for Kenji, and make him feel better.
"Yeah, let's get a nice spot to sit and get cozy. Can't know when this will all die down, right?" Misa said in a nice calm tone, one that didn't betray her doubt in herself. She felt an almost maternal instinct take over as he lead her towards the spot against the wall that he'd spotted. It seemed he was starting to get his senses back. As the made their way, they passed a table that had blankets on it and Misa quickly grabbed one for them.
When they got there, Kenji sat first and Misa spread out the blanket and offered half to her friend, sitting snugly against his side and covering his knees and her own. He asked about the first day of class, and she gave a soft nod as she recalled the question. She remembered her own embarrassing answer about helping everyone who needed help. Yeah, how naive and unrealistic... but if she aimed for the sun she was bound to land in the stars, no?
"I do remember that! Yours was something really surprisingly sweet, what was it again...? Being there for people that had nobody?"

just when things started seeming "normal" AMIDST ALL OF THIS, KENJI was grateful for Misa. Grateful that she drew his hood, grateful that she had pulled his hood up for him so he had at least some privacy in this sea of classmates. They were the heroes of tomorrow, the stalwarts, and here he was blubbering. How embarrassing.
Where did she get that blanket? As Kenji watched Misako unfolded the blanket and took her seat. But rather than cocoon herself away from the redhead, she fanned it wide, covering both of their laps. Kenji’s throat clenched, his face growing hot beneath the cool streaks left by tears. Misako was… certainly very friendly about how close she sat to people.
Kenji tucked his head again, a shy hand rubbing the back of his neck as she recalled that Kenji had mentioned “being there for people who had nobody”.
Well… yeah. That was the gist of it. But… and, if he were in a less frantic state of mind, Kenji might have been relieved that that was what Misako had remembered. Not that Kenji was the child of villains, and that he was the child that had no one… but that he wanted to be the “someone” that was there for people. Misako had remembered the good parts.
She hadn’t remembered what Kenji was currently trying (and failing) to say.
“Y-yeah, there’s… that…” Kenji agreed, rubbing the back of his neck, “Thank you.”
Thank you for remembering the good things, he meant.
The boy tried to mop at his face with his sleeve, but the sleeve stayed pressed to his face. Kenji dug the heel of his hand into one eye til he nearly saw stars, trying to figure-out a way to say what he wanted to.
There was a loose stitch in the blanket, just over Kenji’s knee. He picked at it, still tearful and snotty, his brow furrowing.
“I wanna be like that because, uh…” the teen mumbled, “I, uh… n-needed a person when I was a k-kid. I didn’t have anyone. My parents were—are—bad people.”
Kenji glanced towards the t.v., which he could only see a sliver of from their vantage point on the ground. As he muttered, he seemed to build momentum and confidence.
“A-and… uh…” Kenji faltered, inhaling shakily and then sighing, “My dad. My dad. Was in there.”
The redhead pointed at the t.v., briefly, then covered his mouth his free hands. His shoulders shook quietly, and he pulled the hood low over his face, biting his lip.
They were supposed to be the strong ones.
But, faced with the possibility of his own father, Kenji was just a terrified kid.

Misako tried her best to remain calm and caring and just to be there for Kenji, in whatever sense of the word meant the most to the boy who was so obviously suffering a mental anguish that she didn't understand yet. The world around her slowly drowned away like a faucet being turned off ever so slowly. An impressive feat, considering the chattering and clammering that filled the room with this nervous tension. Eventually, to Misa, it felt like her and Kenji were the only people there as she listened to his story. He thanked her for remembering some of what he said, but she had a sneaking suspicion that she had missed the point by a wide margin.
"You're very welcome, Kenji-san. You... have a very kind heart, and I'm sad to see it break here so terribly."
Kenji was struggling again, showing nervous ticks left and right. His palm pressing hard into his face and then picking at the cheap blanket that was draped over his knees. She wondered if she should tell him to stop, or let him continue if it made him feel better. She decided to keep quiet about it, letting him process everything in his own way. He had a point to make, and she hardly wanted to distract him from making it. It seemed like it was extremely important to figuring out the source of the redheads anguish.
When Kenji did manage to get the words out it proved Misa's theory right. The thing he was confessing was extremely relevant to the reason he was so obviously torn up by the news. His parents were villains..? How tragic. Misa felt her heart swell with pride that despite being raised in an environment like that he still chose the brave and selfless career path of being a hero.
"I see..." she sounded off lamely, pausing for a moment before putting her hand on his knee, "but Kenji, you've got people now. Me, the teachers, our classmates, and our senpai's. You have as many people as you need, and you'll never be alone again. I promise you that."
She looked to the screen again and frowned. Today was an overwhelming loss for heroes everywhere. Villains escaped and people were hurt but... they could rebuild, and people could recover. No damage was irreparable if there were still heroes here to try and fix them. With that in mind, she sent Kenji a warm smile that she hoped would reassure him.
"It might get hard, Kenji-san, but you're strong. Stronger than you know. You'll never know how strong you are until you know how strong you have to be. I'll be here with you the whole way too. So when you become the greatest hero, who helps everyone, try not to forget me okay?"
She chuckled a bit at the end, trying to keep it a little lighthearted to relieve some of the incredible tension that had built up in the emergency. She took her hand off his knee, thinking he might want the space again. She wouldn't leave, though.

just when things started seeming "normal" FIVE WORDS OF FLAVOR TEXT, An acrid burn was rising into Kenji’s throat, and he bowed his head, hoping to hell he didn’t get sick. When Misako praised him as being kind-hearted, Kenji smiled wistfully. His fingers still picked at the loose stitching of the blanket, but he hazarded a glance at Misako, tearful but appreciative.
“Thanks,” he said simply. The girl didn’t stop there, though—her hand lit on Kenji’s knee as she persisted. A creeping uncertainty leaked into his expression at the mention of a growing support system, about never being alone again.
“You don’t know that for sure,” the redhead mumbled cynically. He could be alone in the future. Just because he was in the dorms now, with all these people around him… didn’t mean anything. People came and went. You couldn’t count on anyone to really stay.
The redhead scratched his head as Misako continued on about strength—but honestly, whatever point she was trying to make about that was lost on the redhead. Something about being strong and great and not forgetting her.
“The greatest?” Kenji echoed, the smile creeping back into his expression, and his tone, “Please… the D.C. nerds are probably the future poster-kids of hero society. I’ll be lucky if I graduate.”
If his grades didn’t condemn Kenji, his mischievous antics certainly would. It wasn’t for lack of trying, either—Kenji studied hard, strived to do his best in academic and heroic classes alike. He just… was average at best.

Kenji was thankful, but he was rightfully dubious of her words and promises. She understood why. She could never know for sure that he wouldn't end up alone. Something might happen to her. They were setting out to be heroes, after all. That said, until that happened, she was sure that she wouldn't let the boy be alone. She shrugged off his pessimism though. She wasn't going to let him dwell on the negative things. Especially not today, when they'd just received this terrible news. She instead sent a very wide smile at him, straightening her glasses.
"Well, I can't make that promise, you're right. I never know what could happen but... even if you try to push everyone away, I'll be here as long as I'm able to. If I'm ever gone, I'm sure you'll find new friends too. You're... a better person than you think, and I think you'll make it far. As for graduating, I'll have to make sure you pass. Even if I have to pull you by your ear and make you study with me."
She was honest in her words, feeling a little bad for making a promise that was impossible for her to guarantee. Kenji was smarter than that. Even if he didn't get the best grades.
"I suppose the both of us will just have to wait to see what the future holds, though. It's a little exciting, sometimes. To think about what we could be. You just have to focus on that, and not let yourself get down."
Misa ended her declaration with a confident nod. She would stay with Kenji this night, until they let them go back to their rooms. She knew he was over the worst of it... but she refused to leave a friend and a fellow classmate alone here when he was going through something so serious.
