technical friends EVER SINCE SAITO HAD LANDED HIMSELF in the hospital, and after Charlotte’s brief stint on the streets, the workshop became a second-home. She’d come clean to Chimera about not-actually-going-home on the eve of Mother’s Day, and… well, let’s just say that she was reporting to two overbearing maternal figures now, rather than just one. And neither of them were women, which made it vaguely amusing.
Orlov-sensei would periodically check-in with her, although their way of speaking about things was all sort-of smoke-and-mirrors. They talked about it without talking about it. Chimera was way blunter—where was she, what was she doing, take a picture and prove it. Charlotte supposed it was only natural, for an older brother.
Anyways, the workshop was the only place the prawn could get some peace of mind without her beloved hircine friend having a conniption. So that is where the prawn found respite.
She was hunched over at a table when a text lit-up her phone, causing the device to skitter insistently away from the prawn. Charlotte sighed, ignoring the device as she finished soldering the device in front of her. The bright white of solder reflected on her visor, sparking and spewing as she traced a line between two plates of armor. Once the seam was sealed, she set the soldering gun down on the work-table. Charlotte lifted her visor, rising from her stool to grab her phone.
No Yojin, today. So the music was quiet and the energy was pretty chill, as opposed to the usual heavy-rock and shouting over guitars and metal-growls in conversation.
The prawn unlocked her phone, skimming the message. Melody wanted to discuss her support equipment, and wondered if Charlie was free.
<< Yeah, in the shop. Come on by whenever. I’ll be here for a few hours.>>
The prawn hit [SEND] and set the phone back down, surveying the project before her. If her memory served her, Melody had some sort of… water powers… so she was curious as to what sort of tech a water-power-person could possibly want.
Ah, well. She supposed she’d soon find-out.

Melody after taking a break from U.A and travelling home had spent some time to herself in the dorm. She was being her usual loner self but she knew she had to play catch up once again. So first was first, she wanted to finally work on developing her combat style and refining it. She always struggled with close range combat, people who could close the gap between her and the target could take her out of the fight rather quickly and stop her singing. So she had an idea but she was going to need the help of a rather close prawn she was familiar with.
Melody had asked Charlie if she was available to create some gear that she wanted and if they could speak in person, charlie accepted and now melody was on her way. However she wanted to test if she could still do something since it had been a while, melody wanted to travel via the pipes. She wondered though what she could do about her clothes..her normal school outfit couldn't really change like her hero costume could thanks to many many trips to the costume designer. She quickly changed into her costume, opting not to put the mask on since it obscured her face.
She then focused herself feeling herself turn into water and feeling extra limber, she then dove into the pipe and got lost a bit on the way there but eventually she thought she found the right pipe. Charlie would begin to hear some noise from the sink, like someone was using water nearby and then it would get louder and louder until eventually a giant blob of water began to pop out of the sink with glowing blue eyes staring silently at charlie for a few seconds to see how she'd react to melody's strange appearance.

technical friends THE PRAWN SET HER CELL-PHONE DOWN and thought little else of the exchange. She lifted the soldering iron, and quietly began her work again, her lavender eyes almost going cross from the level with which she focused. The room was quiet, which was unusual for the workshop—
And then a thudding, deep within the walls, pulled at her attention. The prawn ignored it, at first, but the thud seemed to get closer and closer. The prawn set the soldering iron down, switching it off.
What in the world…?
The shop-sink at the far end of the room seemed to pressurize, and one of the handles torqued itself inward. Charlotte stood up slowly, trying to get a better look. No water.
Then an entire blob emerged, plopping into the sink. The prawn simply stared, her antennae lifting in alarm. Huh. Water didn’t usually do that. Two, luminous eyes finally joined the unusual mass. It had to be a quirk. But Charlotte would deign to admit that she wasn’t aware of it being Melody’s quirk, specifically.
“Uhhh,” the prawn said uncertainly, surveying the inhuman mass in the sink. Remembering that it was rude to stare, the prawn averted her gaze towards the project again, taking a seat.
“How’s it going?”
A decidedly lukewarm reaction to an otherwise jarring entrance—but it had shocked the prawn enough to make her stop working, if that was the least bit reassuring to the blob of water.

Melody went from her blobby ball form to a her usual humanoid form that still outlined her hair. Her glowing eyes stared at Charlie for a few moments, "Well hello to you too." she said with a bit of sass surprised that charlie was hadn't really said much of anything at first. She moved out of the sink, maintain the same elevation and kinda just phasing through the sink as if it wasn't even there. The floor underneath her becoming wet with each step. Melody then took a deep breath and hummed a note as the water around her began to vanish.
Then she would begin to morph back, her clothes and then skin reforming. "Ah sorry. It was your first time seeing this part of my quirk right?" she said realizing she most likely freaked out Charlie. "Yeah, I'm able to turn my body into water but it isn't my main ability so I dont use it very often." she said putting a hand behind her head and scratching it. "I'm good, how are you? I actually really needed your help for something.." she said giving a small smile to charlie, "I wanted your help designing a weapon. A rapier specifically.." she said giving charlie some time to take in the statement. She tried to think of all the times that her and charlie actually spoke one on one..nothing much really came to mind and it bugged melody a bit. After spending so much time together and even taking a trip together, melody didnt really feel that close to anyone. If someone were to ask questions about charlie melody was worried she wouldn't be able to answer despite saying in the past charlie was a good friend. "Sooo any ideas? I was wondering if there was a way to make it work with the main function of my quirk." She pausing in order to give charlie a chance to ask her questions and other information. Melody could already tell she was getting a bit ahead of herself.

technical friends "AH, IT'S MIRO-CHAN," the prawn remarked, still monotone. The only indication that she had been surprised was the leaping of her brow-ridge as she looked up again. Though her reactions betrayed no surprise, she had (as Melody suspected) been freaked-out by the unusual arrival of her friend.
“I had not seen you use your quirk, no,” the prawn confirmed, “I was surprised.”
The prawn breathed a low whistle as melody confirmed that she could turn into water. What a neat quirk! One couldn’t help but wonder about the science behind it though. Best not to think too hard about these things.
“’m alright,” the prawn said simply, leaning against the worktable. She unplugged the soldering iron, and began to put the previous project aside. Melody spoke abstractly about her reason for visiting—a quest for a weapon. A rapier?
“Like… a sword?” the prawn reiterated. Charlie reached for her notebook, which was filled with schematics from other projects and the accompanying notes. She fanned the pages, flipping towards the first empty space that she could fine. The prawn bent the notebook back on itself.
A pencil was retrieved from one of the many pockets of Charlotte's pants, clicked a few times to get some lead out.
“A sword that works with your quirk…”
Admittedly, Charlie was starting to feel a bit sheepish, too—before this, she hadn’t even known what Melody’s quirk was. Which made the task of creating a weapon that could utilize it… next to impossible. Charlie took a seat at the worktable, gesturing for Melody to join her.
“Do you mean… like… a rapier that turns into water like you do? Or… a sword that can channel water and use it to cut? Maybe?” the prawn clarified, her confusion clear.
Although years at U.A. had made Charlie far more outgoing, she was still clueless when it came to other people. Once a tech head, always a tech head.
Upon the graph paper of the composition book, the prawn began to draw the outline of a sword, faintly, so that it overtook the entire page.

Melody put her hands together shyly, she felt bad for spooking charlie now but hopefully they could just gloss over it quickly. "Yeah..I can turn into water but that's just a side feature..my main ability is to be able to control water while i sing or speak" she said as a small glob of water moved towards the table they were nearby. "I can hold it for a few seconds after im doing speaking but not for very long." she said as a small humanoid made of water appeared on the table and began to dance ballet. After she stopped it stood still and then just went plopped onto the table surface. she quickly hummed a bit and guided the water back to the sink. She pulled up a chair and sat down at a respectable distance from charlie. She stared at the paper and watched as charlie began to sketch, she watched in amazement at how nicely charlie could draw. "Wow, nice sketching skills" she said between charlie's statements, however when charlie mentioned the second idea for her rapier melody quickly shot back up. "Yes! That's exactly what I had in mind." She said "Unlike Tetsuko and Eli making a sword out of water is a bit hard for me since I need to sing or speak to use my quirk." she said with a small glimmer in her eyes.
"But if the sword is blunt and i can just sharpen the edges when I need to cut through stuff I get a lot of more control and my sword would not really be lethal." she said with a small smile on her face and joy in her voice, she was extremely excited for this. It was a long time that melody had thought about to help her close range combat. Up close she was prone to people trying to stop her from singing or speaking but with a sword it would give her a fighting chance to fight them off. It felt silly to say but she hadn't ever really seen charlie so serious, charlie reminded melody a bit of herself. She wondered though if she should try and tell charlie about her style? was this sketch going to be just a basic design? melody had so many questions but it was really hard for melody to try and gauge charlie. Jeez just how out of her element was melody? she sat there fidgeting a bit trying to figure out what was next. "Sooo...how are you? been a while since we actually chatted.." she said awkwardly

technical friends THE PRAWN LISTENED AS MELODY explained, briefly, the capabilities of her quirk—she could turn into, and manipulate, water. And it had something to do with her voice. Maybe it had something to do with frequency? Like opera singers who could shatter glasses with a specific resonance? The prawn considered this as she drew—a rapier that channeled the water that Melody manipulated would then need something that resonated as the human voice did, as well as something for water to channel down.
“I see what you mean,” Charlotte mumbled, “Something that only cuts if you want it to.”
Perhaps a rod or a dowel, with grooves on opposite sides, for water to course along… and a core that could vibrate, some sort of filament… The prawn illustrated these as she reflected upon it. The drawings were probably nonsense to the outside observer, but to her it made sense.
The other girl tried to make small-talk, which earned Melody a sort of vacant glance, at first. Changing between “creating” and “socializing” took a few moments. The prawn was in the groove. Didn’t help that Melody’s question was so stilted, which in-turn made the prawn even more awkward.
“’m alright,” Charlotte said simply, “Nothing really… unusual to report. Just… school, learning how to live with like… five other people, internships. You know.”
Sure, everyone had their own space in the Frat House, but it still took a certain degree of getting used to—it wasn’t like the dorms, where your own space really was your own space. They shared bathrooms, in the Frat House. If Charlie or one of the guys hung-out shirtless, there were witnesses. It was totally different.
“How about you?”
The prawn really wanted to discuss the tech request more, but it would be rude to not return Melody the favor of asking how she was doing. Charlie had at least enough wherewithal to ask.

"Y-Yeah, that's exactly it!" she said with a soft smile as something began to tug at the back of her mind. She smothered it quickly as she paid attentive care to charlie's sketching and the details on what it was like to live in the frat house. "Oh right, the frat house." she said as she looked lost in thought as she spoke "I'm too much of a loner to live there hehe...I value my alone time a lot." she said dismissing it a bit,she did honestly care but the thought she believed to have had been smothered came back a bit louder. "But at least im glad you're making some more friends and having fun. These are probably gonna be important memories for you." she said to charlie, if melody was going to be honest she was a bit envious of charlie. While it was true that if she just asked, melody could have probably been squeezed into the frat house but she felt like it was better if she didn't. She would feel like an outsider and isolate herself anyways like she did at the dorms so there was no real point.
Charlie then asked how Melody was doing, realizing that she had just been asking how others were and not really talking about herself. "Oh...im good, went to america to handle some...affairs.." she said looking away for a bit to try and regain her composure "It was weird being back. I felt like a stranger in my own home." she said as she gripped her arm, something was obviously bothering her now. She didn't want to be seen as the edgy angst teenager who's just constant drama. It's why she usually shut herself away in her room or in the music and dance hall. It's why she switched between hating jack and thinking he's the sweet bean that he is. She saw too much of herself in him and she hated it. She hated it because it seems so easy for him to express himself where as she even struggled to be honest with someone she considered a good friend. She was the worst in her own mind. She kept others at an arm's length but now she felt guilt, the question inside her burning more and more to be let out. It was as plain as day on her face, the only question left is if charlie would prod her or not.

technical friends CHARLOTTE HUMMED AS MELODY REMARKED THAT she was a loner, tapping the eraser-end of her pencil against one of her jaw-spikes. Lavender eyes inspected the sketch, and only the sketch, so the prawn was wholly unaware of the distant look that was overcoming Melody’s expression.
“You, a loner?” the prawn repeated, her tone clearly skeptical. Charlie set the paper down again, and began to add handwritten notes along the edges of the page. It was mostly mechanical jargon, and shorthand that only Charlie would know the meaning of. She paused, twirling he pencil in her hand, and glanced at Melody again.
Her skepticism was well-placed—Melody was undeniably pretty, and from Charlie had seen of her (particularly doing their trip to Korea) Melody seemed to have an ease with people. (At least, from the prawn’s perspective.) So how could someone so… lovely?... still manage to be a loner. It warranted more reflection.
“I hope so,” the prawn said softly, in regards to the rooming situation the foundation of ‘important memories’, “Hopefully more good than bad, too.”
With a twinge, Saito’s hospitalization simmered at the back of her mind. Oof, ow.
With a faint *click*, the prawn set her pencil flat upon the table, inclining her had as Melody spoke. Charlie hadn’t known that Melody was from the states—not that the prawn, personally, talked about her time in the states, either. And didn’t affairs sound ominous?
Charlotte’s hand twitched. But rather than reach-out to try and console Melody, the prawn folded her arms, physically bracing herself from potentially crossing any boundaries. For a few moments, the prawn inspected the other girl, as if there’d be some sign of breaking emotionally written somewhere physically on her persons.
“Are you okay?” Charlie finally hazarded, “Or… are you going to be okay?”
The prawn was never one to pry—heck, with all the skeletons Charlie had in her closet, she really didn’t care to peek into other peoples’ metaphorical closets. But if a friend—or even an acquaintance—was clearly distressed, she’d at least make sure that they were alright.

The words hung in the air for melody, charlie doubting her remark about her being a loner..did she really think melody was a socialite? "Yeah..I am." She said with a bit of criticism in her voice aimed at herself. "It's how he managed to find me so easily when he came back.." she said hinting towards the fact the only reason Eli was able to find Melody on his first try since coming back was because he knew she was always in her room. The bird in her prison, the best prison after all is one where the person inside would not want to leave even if they escaped.
She stayed quiet for most of the conversation after that, until charlie set her pencil down and asked melody what's wrong. Oh great, here she goes again. Becoming a burden to those around her with her feelings, she suddenly started to want to reel back but she couldn't run away from it anymore. She could go down the drain again but that would mean she'd start to avoid charlie and for some reason she couldn't bring herself to do it. She felt a pull towards the prawn for some reason, as if it would be safe to confide in her and being honest. She held her hand on her lap and gripped her clothing, the fabric blocking her finger nails puncturing her skin.
She fought back a couple of sniffles and tears..she didn't want to cry, it was pathetic to her. Especially when she was about to explain her reasoning to charlie. The emotional water container leaked a bit more from her eyes. "I....Im a bad friend..." she said choking up a bit "I didnt say bye to anyone here...I dont even hang around like I should with you guys..and to make matters even worse...I end up making this about me.." She said managing to choke it out. "I've known you for how long? Yet i cant even name your favorite color or food or stuff...I..I..planned this so i could get to know you more but instead I just break down and start crying when I realize I ended up making this about me." She said "I'm the worst..im worse than Eli when he left me..when he left...all of us.." she said finally letting it all out. "And the cherry on top, if I didn't feel like I belonged at U.A I took solace in the fact that I could go back home and things would be ok...But now i went home and felt even MORE out of place.. I just I-" she said as she started to breath a bit harder and louder quickly starting to get more anxious.. It was obvious she was going to have a melt down in the room and going to have a panic attack as the sea of emotions raged inside of her as it typically did, except this time the cup was going to spill over

TECHNICAL FRIENDS THE PRAWN INCLINED HER HEAD as the other girl confirmed that, yes, she was a loner. Also, who was this ominous "he" thata had found her? Was Melody safe? Was some guy giving her a tough time? Charlie sat a little taller, her brow stitching. Melody wasn't exactly a close friend of hers, by any rate-- a friend of some friends-- another satellite in the same constellation, but wholly unconnected to the prawn.
Which made Melody's outburst all the more awkward. Like... yes, Charlie had opened that door by asking if Melody was alright. Most of the time, though, the prawn expected people to be as uncommunicative as she was. A quick "I'm okay" or "I'll be okay," if things weren't alright... not... an actual, legitimate answer?
Melody tensed, seeming to withdraw inwardly... and then she started to cry. UuuuUUUUUHHHHH oh gosh. Geez. All they had in here was shop-towels, not tissues. And the prawn wasn't in the habit of carrying a handkerchief because she didn't have a nose, so like... what was the point?
The prawn got-up and retrieved the sky-blue roll of shop towels, setting them near Melody as she laid all of her insecurities bare.
"Goodbyes are hard," the prawn agreed, folding her arms and slouching against the tabletop, "I probably wouldn't say goodbye if I was leaving U.A. either."
But perhaps that was because, privately, the prawn didn't think it'd make a difference here-or-there if she stayed at U.A. or left.
"I like black," the prawn offered, unsure of what else to say, "I've probably got every color of the rainbow covered when it comes to my shell, so... black. Black is good... my favorite food is... homemade mac 'n' cheese. It's one of the only dishes I can make without messing it up."
It was like the prawn was desperately casting-out lines, as if these pieces of information would help reel Melody back in from whatever was pushing her towards a freakout.
And yet, she was totally missing the point. Those were just two details that added-up to something bigger. The prawn lifted her gaze towards Melody, watching the battle for composure on her features.
"It's supposed to be about you..." the prawn offered, "I asked you how you were doing. I didn't ask you has I was doing. Or how Eli was doing. It's about you."
Charlie was grasping for straws. What else could she say?

Her brain pretty much became liquid mush and her thoughts were coming quicker than she could release them. But amidst all that chaos melody heard charlie's voice, she was literally answering melody's questions as she asked them. Melody sat there confused for a second, the tears still kind of coming down her face but she was MUCH more confused than before. did...wha- Melody was so thrown off by how straight faced charlie was..when giving her answers. She kind of laughed a little bit at charlie's responses she let out a little bit of a small pfft sound from her mouth "You know it's more complicated than that" as a happier expression came out from her face. Charlie literally just answering her question cheered her up a bit as it seemed like charlie wasnt really worried about melody's little outburst of emotions.[break] [break]
She hated more than anything else letting her outburst freaking others out, it made her...not feel guilty about it? If charlie had started to freak out like melody did then melody might've felt worse about the whole ordeal. "But well now you've seen me cry a bit so you arent allowed to leave without saying bye. If you do I'll hunt you down." she said trying to joke around a bit too, the sad expression mixing with a small smile. She didn't want to keep acting sad lest it become infectious to charlie and then they're just both sad sacks. Charlie staying calm helped her calm down, Melody stood up from her chair and hopped up on the table a bit. she gripped onto the and kicked her legs a bit, it was a useful distraction to try and stay calm. "Well yeah that's fair you did ask me how I was doing..I guess i got a bit too emotional? no one really ever asks me how I'm doing, so i suppose the one time they did...the literal floodgates jut opened.." she said being honest and vulnerable with charlie [break][break]
"I..I guess its cause everyone sees me as a joke at times.." she said sighing a bit as she looked longingly into space "Im just the wet girl, Evian, water bottle..puddle.." she said telling charlie the names that sometimes bothered her. " And because I go along with it they just usually assume im fine. I don't get sad, I don't have problems..I dont have a shitty history.." she said explaining herself a bit more "it sounds corny...but like water I fill whatever little container they think of me, like how you thought I was really social." She said making a rather silly analogy of who she was as a person. "But im pretty sure you have experienced it a bit too, people just reducing you to what your quirk is, how do you take it so well? doesn't it ever bother you?" she said asked the fellow quirked girl.
Melody carefully danced around the subject of Eli, she'd rather avoid talking about her ex since that was like a whole other box of worms she couldn't really handle at the moment..

technical friends A SMILE TOUCHED THE OTHER GIRL'S expression as Charlie parsed out information about herself. Charlotte smiled back, the corners of her eyes pinching. The prawn rested her chin upon her hand, shrugging her shoulders as Melody insisted that she wouldn’t let the prawn leave without saying “goodbye”.
“Really? You’ll hunt me down?” the prawn countered, her voice tinged with amusement, “I’ll have you know… I’m really good at giving people the slip.”
Like that week she freaked-out and said she was going home, but didn’t. Buuuut she’d only really talked to Chimera about that. Chimera and, involuntarily, Serperior.
Charlotte was still watching Melody rather closely, for any sorrowful look or inroad for reassurance. Heart-to-hearts really weren’t her thing, but… she’d try her best. She was mostly quiet, though, while Melody spoke, explaining how she mostly just occupied whatever space people slotted her in—endured names, endured being treated like a joke.
Honestly, if Melody and Charlotte had been anything more than acquaintances, the prawn might’ve patted her shoulder or something, but… just acquaintances. Technically friends. She kept her hands to herself.
She huffed slightly, folding her arms and resting her chin on the table.
“I don’t take it so well,” Charlotte corrected Melody, “I just… hm.”
She’d never tried to put her challenges to words before.
“My problems are different,” the prawn finally explained, “So my answers to those problems are different.”
The prawn rubbed the back of her neck, her palm scraping against the ridges of her spine.
“People are scared of me,” Charlotte mumbled. She fidgeted with her pencil, standing it up on-end and holding it upright between her primary finger and the tabletop, “Even at U.A., there are people who are scared of me. People forget that I am human.”
There was a tangible sadness growing in her eyes. She looked at the pencil.
“It’s always bothered me,” the prawn persisted, “But… there’s… really nothing you can do, about people being afraid. I can make myself quiet and small… I can be kind and supportive… I can be angry and loud… it doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, I’m still just that buggy mutant in support.”
She wasn’t even peoples’ first choice when it came to tech. Charlie was just a token mutant.
“Maybe it isn’t that different,” she concluded, sighing drolly. She plopped a hand over muzzle, covering her eyes. She then pinched the area between her eyes, where the bridge of a person’s nose would be for most.
“I used to get in so many fights about it, when I was younger,” Charlotte’s voice was fringed by a laugh, “Like I could change peoples’ minds by fighting them. Now I just kinda… take it quietly.”

Melody gave a rather angry pout at charlie's joke. She could tell that charlie was trying to distract her or make light of the situation, melody meant it! Charlie was one of the few people she felt even like..a semblance of a friendship with, well if charlie wanted to leave...Melody couldn't really stop her could she? She could definitely guilt her! Yep harass her with a bunch of messages on abandoning her! That'd work! It'd be scummy though, and melody didnt want to stoop so low. "Like you're tired of even trying?" she asked curiously, wanting to understand charlie a bit further. it was rare to even have the girl talk at all, this was prime time with her and melody was not going to miss out.
What melody could do though was extend the same kindness that was shown to her. Melody didn't really ever fear charlie, she was obviously one of the people who stared at first but it was never because of a negative opinion. It was because she was just interesting to look at. "Sorry, I shouldnt have said that. Of course you've had trouble with people reducing you to just your quirk." She said beating herself down a bit "That was pretty dumb huh..." she said quickly trying to change her attitude though "If my opinion is worth anything to you, I never really thought bad of you. I think you're pretty cool looking." she said with a positive tone in her voice and a small smile stretching across the girl's face. "I, DID however think you were gonna be in the main support course. I saw your epic sonic punch during the sports festival. You sure as hell have some strength hidden in that exoskeleton of yours." She wanted to give charlie a hug but Melody was someone who was pretty touch starved as a child, contact with others even holding hands made her pretty uncomfortable, hell it caused a fight between her and Eli once. She got overloaded with contact really fast. "My own experiences are don't even hold a candle to what you probably went through. I will say at least recently though it's pretty funny that they've started to call me a siren. I guess it's a compliment since it means I sing well." she said trying to lighten the mood a bit.
She then smirked a bit "I do also recall hearing you're really good with braiding hair. I guess if U.A doesn't work out and you do give me the slip you could work at a hair salon? I'd be your best customer." she said with an awkward smile. Why was melody's face turning a bit red after the smile? Huh, weird it was warm. As she spoke though, melody used her quirk however and played with a bit of water, animating the scene in front of the pair. a small little prawn shaped person walked up to a humanoid girl with hair similar to melody's and moved the hair around all fancy like. Melody was getting more and more into these little puppet shows she did with her water, it was a fun little skill she was trying to pick up more.
