| He lives on in you & me | Spymaster's Legacy | To set foot onto the hero academy once more... It was a peculiar feeling for the Germanic lass. Certainly, she had left the academy on a good note, in truth she had even departed for the sake of those dear to her, so she could ensure their safety, but it didn't change the fact that in the eyes of the world, Elise von Eisenberg had ceased walking the path of a hero. Still, little could any of them have understood how wrong they were, for the definition of a hero in her opinion was something far different than what the vast majority had taken for truth. Then why, would one likely ask: Why was Elise back at this academy? The reason was somewhat complicated. It appeared that the late mentor of the girl his office had been left untouched. Of course, at first, it would be proper etiquette to contact the family and hand over the personal effects to them, but the only response they received was that those items now belonged to his successor. It was something of a tradition most wouldn't understand in this modern-day, the act of passing on your wisdom, experience, your entire legacy onto another, especially not one of the same blood, and yet this was the case for the legacy of Spymaster.
Fortunately, the principal knew that the man had an apprentice, the one who carried on his legacy and had inherited the role of Spymaster. It was for that reason that during the start of the weekend Elise answered the message of the principal with the promise she would take a look at his office. However, before that, there was something else she needed to do. Even if her master had only one apprentice, there were others who looked up to him, who admired him and cared about him, and she was certain news about his passing would have left quite an impact on those individuals. Perhaps it was for that reason that Elise had chosen to do this, her fingertips gliding along the keypad of her phone, carefully pressing the keys as she tapped her message.
With her message send Elise entered the campus grounds. Of course she didn't expect any sudden alarms, after all the principal had made it clear she was still welcome here, in the end the sole reason she was no longer a student was that she was attempting to track down the treacherous spy that had led to Kiryu-sensei's death. It didn't take long for her to reach the small building adjacent to the main building of the campus. It saddened her a little that the school has chosen not to use it, in the end in her eyes the disciplinary committee should have been a order that would tend to the chaos within their own ranks, but last she heard from Tetsu they had chosen to make the committee feel less intimidating and had relocated the committee to an ordinary club room. Sad all things considered, so when she opened the doorway leading into the building and found the place abandoned Elise couldn't help but heave a soft sigh.

Haruuhi had been sitting in Literacy class with Switch and the rest of 3-S when she felt the phone at her side suddenly vibrate. She glanced down to the device but chose not to touch it. She really didn't have too with her quirk anyways. She remotely accessed it to see what the message was about and silently read it through her quirks ability.
For a moment she froze upon seeing Elise's message, her pen stopping it's back and forth mindless drum. She wanted to meet her in Kiryu-sensei's office? Why there of all places? Hadn't the teachers or sensei's family cleared that out already? She felt a pit of anxiety form in her gut that stayed with her for the rest of the class. It was impossible for Haruuhi to concentrate at this point, and so that meant she had everything packed up in her bag and ready to go the instant the bell rang.
She jumped up to her feet, excused herself from any discussions her classmates had started and immediately made her way towards Kiryu sensei's office. It wasn't long before Gadian came bounding down the hall after her until he fell in line at her heel. There was no discussion between the two as they approached the office. There was a bit of panic rising up in haruuhi's chest when she did finally reach the door.
She brought her hand up to knock, hesitating for a moment before finally letting her fist hit the door before sliding it open.
"Ohayo, Elise-san?" She called in, stepping inside and letting Gadian join her before closing the door behind her. When she looked back into the office, she felt her heart sink a bit as she looked around the office. Nothing had changed... in all this time since her sensei had passed, nothing had seemingly been touched. It hurt to see it... it just made her expect that Kiryu would walk around a corner and announce that he was quite alive. Her eyes started to water a bit, though she was sure not to let a single tear fall from her face, taking in a large breath to steel her emotions.
"Why is all of this still here..? I thought they would have taken it all away already..." She stated, sounding as if she was suddenly out of breath. She kept herself close to the door, much in the same way she did the first time she had met her teacher...

Haruuhi's greeting made her turn toward the doorway, a gentle nod having been given by the pink-haired lass upon which she turned back to the office. The question that followed was a painful one for Elise to answer, but she felt it was her responsibility as Spymaster's successor to explain things to Haruuhi. "Because that is what it means to take the role our sensei did." Words that surely must had carried a lot of weight, and perhaps even a bit of confusion. Going quiet for a moment Elise approached the desk near the corner of the entrance's side, there were several boxes filled with her books that she used to read during the time she worked as his assistant. "Kiryu-sensei was a shinobi, and in their field the only things they leave behind that is considered of value is their legacy."
She closed the box, and decided to approach the other side of the office, the one that had been primarily used by her master. "It's odd isn't it Haru-chan? There was no proper farewell for him and the government can't pursue the ones responsible for his death." She stepped beside his desk, the untouched bookshelf containing all books, but more importantly there was something he had once told her, something she felt the need to find out.
"Because Spymaster is an existence that lives in the shadows. We take on this duty, carry out those tasks that nobody else can or wants to do, for the sake of the greater good, so that those heroes that exist in the light can continue to be the inspirational individuals our society needs."
And yet... her hand balled up in a fist. "And yet when I look at this school I can't help but wonder if such a future will ever come. I look at those students and most of the times I don't see a future generation of heroes, but a collection of glorified peacekeepers, at least if they don't end up bickering and arguing with themselves."
She chuckled weakly, a slight shake of her head following. "I became his apprentice because I shared his values, I understood what he meant. I won't deny the purpose and usefulness of rules, but looking at the current program, it's too flawed... Perhaps Kiryu-sensei saw that also, and took on the mantle of Spymaster to try to improve things."
She shifted her hand over one of the drawers of the desk and within found a mysterious box, a tug to it making it unable to open, and looking at the keyhole, it seemed not to fit for an ordinary key, no the opening was a bit too different in shape for that.
"... Before he died Kiryu-sensei asked me something, a request that still lingers in my heart, for a long time I pondered what he meant when he told me I would become the next 'Spymaster', but I didn't understand what he meant with carrying on his legacy."
She slowly shifted her hand to her back, a subtle shifting of it inside her clothing soon causing an object wrapped in bandages to become visible, and as she slowly uncoiled them Haruuhi would surely recognize that the kunai the young lady was holding was not just a toy or a replica, it was one of the actual weapons once used by their sensei.
"If my guess is right..." She plunged the kunai inside the lock, and as anticipated she was able to twist it, causing the top of the box to spring open and reveal a similar kunai with a red-colored tag at the hilt. "He wanted me to teach you, so that his teachings will continue to live on."
She gently pressed her hands at the edge of the box, withdrawing her own kunai and nodded her head lightly. "It is yours to take, a symbol of apprenticeship, as much a memento as a sign of one who wanders in the shadows, those history calls: shinobi."
She leaned back in the chair behind the desk and pondered for a moment. "There is something else I wish to show you, but first I think you deserve the chance to ask questions. I imagine you might have many."
Indeed... Why did Kiryu-sensei die? How did he die? Why did she leave so suddenly without telling anyone?

Its not like Haruuhi could say Elise was wrong on anything the older girl explained... it was true that Spymasters approach to the school was very different then that of the other teachers. He didn't just dress the part of a ninja, he really was one, as Elise-senpai explained. There was so much that he did that had gone un noticed, and she wouldn't be surprised if many of the students at U.A barely had a memory of her sensei. It broke her heart to think of it... she had worked closely with Kiryu while on the disciplinary committee and knew more of the kinds of things he had done...
Honestly she had idolized him... to be able to act as a hero without bringing all of this attention onto himself. Being able to do the things regular heroes couldn't do because they had that spotlight shining down on them... That's what she wanted for herself, that's why she had originally planned to become a private investigator... but maybe there was something else she could do?
As she pondered the though, Elise withdrew a kunai from within the folds of her clothes and used it to open a locked box that she had found. Haruuhi tilted her head curiously as she watched her work, assuming she was just going through sensei's things to clean out his office. Though what she said, and what she presented her caused the young girl to pause... her words and emotions stuck in her throat as she presented Haruuhi the box. Inside was an elegant looking Kunai, one with three points, and an inscription on the hilt. She looked at the red tag, then up to Elise.
"Teach me, to become a Shinobi? Honestly I used to think the way sensei dressed was just part of his hero gear... a way to represent himself... I didn't think Shinobi still existed in this day and age but..." She stepped away from the door finally, leaving Gadian behind and approaching the box. She placed her hand on the hilt of the kunai, tracing the inscription with her finger tips. She was biting her inside lip so hard she was soon able to taste the trickles of blood form her tooth marks.
"It makes sense that he was... I wish... I wish he would of told me, and offered to train me himself... I might not be able to be the traditional Shinobi he would have hoped for but... the world needs people like him. I needed him..." She murmured, hicking up the kunai gently with both hands, looking along the length of the blade before holding the flat end against her chest, closing her eyes for a moment.
"It feels weird accepting to have you train me, considering we were just in the same class not that long ago... but if you really did learn everything from Spymaster... then I want to learn too." She stated with a nod of her head, looking up to Elise with a bit of a sad smile on her face. She didn't know how to properly express herself right now. She felt grief, confusion, excitement and hope. She was sad and happy all at the same time and it was extremely overwhelming. She tried to keep her questions at a minimum, this way she didn't give her emotions a chance to burst forth.
"What happened to sensei... really? And why is it such a big secret... I mean I understand that everything he did was under the radar, but we were his students... the school should have been privy to what happened and I... I wish I could have been there to help..." She murmured, falling silent now to give Elise a chance to answer her. That was the only question she would have... she already had a good idea of what she was getting into with this. All she really needed before being able to move forward, was a bit of closure.

Haruuhi's surprise was understandable. The concept of shinobi sounded farfetched in this day and age, a relic of the distant past that was now slowly being forgotten by everyone. And yet Elise had learned that in the shadows of society, the art of the shinobi still existed. Master's secretive hometown was such an example, and so was the existence of their mutual teacher. "It is an understandable thought to have Haru-chan, and yet during my time as Kiryu-sensei's apprentice I learned that there are many ancient secrets and traditions that still live on in secret, hidden in the shadows of our society."
Haruuhi's statement about it feeling weird to be trained by Elise made the pink-haired lass smile briefly. After all, there was truth in the girl's words. Till recently they had still been classmates, even if Elise had been trained in secret to become Kiryu-sensei's successor and inherit his legacy as Spymaster. "I will teach you everything he taught me, but beyond that our only solution would be to travel to his hometown, I know the location, but never went there myself..."
And then came the question, the question she knew that would come, and even if she dreaded to reveal the truth, she knew she had an obligation to tell Haruuhi about it. "What I'm about to tell you Haru-chan is something you can never speak to anyone else about. In all honesty: Just your knowledge about the events will put you and everyone dear to you in severe danger. Miku-chan, G-san, Hanako-san, the person responsible for our sensei's death is that cruel and influential that none would be safe. It is the reason why I left the hero-academy, so that they wouldn't learn that master had an apprentice."
She inhaled deeply and prepared to start her tale. "As you know Kiryu-sensei was a pro-hero that essentially did the more sensitive work for the government. He even told me once that he was a deniable asset, that if he got discovered during a mission they could label him as a vigilante and wash their hands off his involvement. It was a thankless duty, but one he carried out to the best of his capacities for our sake, he shouldered such a heavy burden so that we wouldn't have to."
She still remembered her conviction when she told Kiryu that she was willing to share that burden, so that she could help protect those dear to her from experiencing those things. "The night the raid at Shinagawa happened Kiryu-sensei was given an assignment by the government. It involved the rescue of an engineer who had been taken hostage during the events at Semper-Fi, and went missing during the chaos. To be honest, there was something odd about the assignment, something suspicious, too little info so as a failsafe he asked me to accompany him as his sidekick."
She paused for a bit, closing her eyes as she attempted to steel herself from showing the sorrow and regret she felt as she recalled the memory. "The infiltration went as planned, we dealt with the guards stationed at the location, but once we went to extract the target the truth came to light. We found a laptop inside the hideout, and Kiryu-sensei recognized some of the guards as shinobi, members of a rival clan that worked for a mercanry called the Taskmaster, a monster with a long history with our teacher. Kiryu-sensei commanded me to retreat with the hostage, and in a panic I contacted the Principal and arranged a dropoff point to safely deliver the engineer."
She gripped her hand tightly into a fist as she continued speaking. "I... I was worried about Kiryu-sensei, so I rushed back to the scene, it was there I found a severely injured Kiryu-sensei trying to hold strong against Taskmaster, of course I tried to help our sensei, attacking Taskmaster, but the man deflected my attack and inflicted some sort of poison on me. I'm not sure what it was, it must had been associated to the secrets of their shinobi clan because the poison ate away at my true form, melting away parts of my slime to the point I was forced to cut off the part that got infected. Kinda the reason I lost most of my combat capacities in the wake of the mission, my body lost a lot of its former strength and speed..." she smiled sorrowfully at Haruuhi. "But that wasn't the worst of it, Kiryu-sensei intercepted an attack meant to kill me, one that severely injured him, and he used the last of his strength to restrain our enemy, commanding me to... kill the villain."
She leaned back in the chair, and finally felt the tears starting to gather in her eyes. "In the end, even now I can't help but doubt... If someone stronger had been there, then maybe Kiryu-sensei wouldn't have died that night, I tried to save him, but there was simply too much damage to his organs for me to be able to stabilize him till he reached the hospital. Kiryu-sensei... told me he was proud of me, wanted me to succeed him as Spymaster, and yet I feel I didn't deserve to see that smile on his face as he said those words."
She raised a sleeve to her eyes, wiping the tears with the fabric as she spoke softly. "In the end, I and the principal discovered that the Plutocracy has a spy inside the Hero Oversight Committee. It's why I have been working at the Public Safety Commission and carrying out my own investigation about the whereabouts of this individual. But unfortunately, they are dug in quite deeply..."
It still hurt to talk about it, and she could only imagine what type of emotions Haruuhi might have been feeling right now. But still, she raised her head to look at Haruuhi, to see how one of her master's students would face the truth that she had been forced to accept as her reality.
