APPEARANCE AND PERSONALITY
Appearance:
A teenager of average height, boasting a pert pear figure and a toned, svelte build; whose style and posture immediately marks her as a rough character. Kanna walks fast, scarcely looking at people around her, often carrying headphones and a backpack. She loathes formal wear or uniforms and instead favors casual street clothes: loose hoddies, t-shirts, and ripped jeans, whatever she finds comfortable to wear. She cuts her hair short every couple months, just keeping it long enough to hold in a short ponytail. She also boasts several tattoos including: A large, dancing dragon and phoenix on her back, a tribal spider between her navel and right breast, the characters "知識は力" near the outside of her left breast, a compass on her left hand and finally a thorned rose around her right thigh. She has both ears pierced, as well as her left nostril and tongue.

Personality:
As a solitary, free spirited "gray hat" hacker, Kanna forges ahead, seeking her own path independently of what others thought of or did to her. She avoids mingling with others and spends most of her time alone in her room. Cynical, abrasive and hot tempered, she fully understands she's a difficult person to get along with - let alone befriend - and wouldn't have it any other way. Most people aren't worth paying attention to anyway...
Thankfully, Kanna refused to let her sad upbringing define her. While it made her undeniably asocial - bordering on psychopathy - she felt no urge to lash out or seek vengeange against society as a whole. She retained a reasonably aligned moral compass, a strong sense of right and wrong and a desire not to see suffering inflicted on the undeserving... She'd always have a seething hatred for violence against women and children, enough to inflict the sadistic payback she never could give her own father.
She looks out for herself as much as possible, in every aspect of her life, all but refusing to ever ask for help. Though perfectly capable of cooking and looking after her place, she finds such mundane chores unnecessary and instead eats instant food inside a mostly messy appartment. She wakes up late and sleepy with bags under her eyes, has coffee and cigarettes for breakfast, and sits on her computer. If she gets hungry, she'll make herself some microwave pizza or instant ramen, and if she gets bored she'll light a spliff and play some shooter games. If she gets lazy or sleepy she'll just smoke more and grab an energy drink for fuel.
Late at night, she spends hours glued to the screen involved in online hacktivism - under the name "Owl" - perhaps the only true heroics she genuinely gets involved in, without anybody knowing her identity. Should she has no causes to fight for or work to deliver, she'll instead go out and find herself a rave party, do drugs, and hopefully get laid. Despite having been sexually active for a few years, Kanna has never had a proper partner, preferring occasional flings over the binds of a commited relationship.
Despite skipping about as many classes as she can get away with, Kanna never shirks out on club activities. She took pride in her work on the previous school's web app, and would regularly improve or debug it as needed. It's only natural she'd seek to do the same here at Yuuei.
Classes and parties aside, she'll only leave her room if she needs to restock - drugs, food and tobacco - or if she needs something she can't get inside it, such as exercise. She enjoys a short swim at the pool every other night, and has at least two MMA classes a week. It helps her vent some of the excess tension, with martial arts in particular giving her a slight measure of discipline and control over her violent temper.
After all, she's the type who can explode from calm to furious in a split second if sufficiently provoked, grabbing the nearest hard object to bash the offender in the head. This change happens so suddenly most foes don't even see it coming, allowing her to get the first strike in while their guard is down - starting and finishing the fight in one blow.
Ideally, she'd rather solve conflicts in a smarter, but equally assertive fashion. No matter whom, Kanna makes it a point to have leverage over others, information she can use as a shield against potential foes shackling or punishing her for knowing too much. She normally uses the terabytes worth of sensitive data for her own protection (it will be leaked should any harm come to her), but when wronged... Then she'll actively exploit this information to the fullest and squeeze her victims dry, tormenting them over the course of years. With her eiditic memory, she never forgets an enemy...
Ironically, the same cerebral cunning that makes her unpleasant foe also makes her a reliable ally when the time comes. She'll seldom go out of her way to help another, but will gladly sell her skills to someone she doesn't loathe. In the rare occasion she likes that person or relates to their cause, she'll casually 'forget' to mention due payment. When called out on this by someone she trully fancies, she'll even blush and dismiss it, looking away and telling them they'll discuss it later.
In the grand scheme of things, she views her quirk as a fulcral part of her hacker skillset, and seeks to fully master its control over information. Her very presence in Yuuei is nothing short of ironic, as she sees herself as one of the last people who could call herself heroic, nor has any ambition to become one. With raw talent and earnest desire to hone it, she intrigued the examiners enough to be accepted into the school, after a glimpse of selflessness betrayed the budding heroism Kanna refuses to acknowledge.

HISTORY
Born in 2055, a girl was born to the Mikadzuki family in Sagamihara - Yoshino they called her - as the daughter of a hard working company man and his wife. She never wanted for anything, and perhaps in another time she might have never had to...
At the age of four she discovered her quirk through an unnatural affinity to electronics, and perhaps even considered a future as a hero. Warned against flaunting her control over computers, only Yoshino's intelligence and memorization marked her as a talented young girl, if limited by her introverted personna.
But Yoshino wouldn't have the happy childhood or innocent dreams so many others took for granted. When she was no older than five years old, her father lost his job. At a time of economic crisis, it would have taken him years to find a new one. But he never got that far... Stricken with depression, the man turned to drinking, and in turn venting his frustrations on his wife and daughter. In a matter of months he went from loving to abusive, beating the two until his wife simply left, unable or unwilling to bring Yoshino along.
The girl never knew why her mother left her, but she never forgave her, and would lump mother and father together for the rest of her life.
The did a good job at hiding the wounds inflicted if nothing else, venting his myriad frustrations on the only one around to recieve them: And the more she endured the abuse, the angrier Yoshino became. In time she started fighting back when struck, but that only intensified the beatings she recieved. Eventually, her fury boiled over, and she struck her unwitting father with his newly purchased golf club.
At the age of ten, the father was no longer able to hide the mess his household had become, and the girl was taken into foster care. But she'd find little to no improvement in the system...
At a time where quirks remained illegal, the infant Yoshino knew better than flaunting hers even around her new home. In the year after separating from her family, she finally had a measure of time to develop it, and improve her affinity to technology with computer science and programming languages. Even under a stressful, unsuitable upbringing, the girl showed incredible potential. With her brilliant mind, she'd achieve passing grades while scarcely looking at any study material outside school, or even paying attention in class.
Instead, she remained absorbed in computers and gadgets, slowly coming to understand her quirk not as simple control over computers, but an ability to manipulate the electromagnetic flow of binary data. Between components of the same computer, through other computers connected to the same network... This affinity for technology over people seemed so obvious to any who looked, and yet without seeing the full depth of her skills, most passed it off as great talent. The very nature of Yoshino's quirk relied immensely on her own natural skill, and she'd need a few more years to achieve a sufficient level of mastery in computer sciences and programming.
But as she worked towards that goal, she eventually met an obstacle in her adoptive siblings, who discovered it and bullied her, under threat of revealing her powers at a time when they were still scarcely accepted.
Fully realizing the power of knowledge, Yoshino used her quirk to turn their game against them... Using not the nasty brats themselves, but the authority above them: Their parents. Learning about her foster father's affair with another woman through his cellphone, she plotted her escape from this system. She could do much better on her own. The next time her "siblings" attempted to abuse her, she retaliated with the nearest weapon she found: A screwdriver.
Hastily running out of the house, she blackmailed the father against sending the police after the rogue quirker. If he did so or anything happened to her, she'd send the incriminating messages to his wife.
Now out on her own, Yoshino took to calling herself Kaya in a pinch, merely an alternate reading to the Kanji composing her name. She relished in her newfound liberty, skimming whatever money she needed from hapless people and finding herself a hotel to hole up in. Yet this absolute freedom wouldn't last long. No more than a week had passed, and even though no authorities or vigilantes seemed aware of her existence, someone found her: Mikadzuki Yoshinori, her grandfather.
Despite never explaining how he found her, he instead begged for the girl's forgiveness, for the actions of his worthless son, and for not seeing it in time to stop it. So long as he believed the girl to be alright in her foster home, his shame held him against seeking her out. But after seeing her all alone against the world, he intervened. Kaya stood speechless as she listened to the kneeling man, but even though someone in her family finally saw what she'd gone through, she couldn'd simply let it go. The girl's eiditic memory branded each of those hellish days in her mind, and he understood her grief. At the very least, he helped the her disappear entirely, in exchange for the girl's agreement to attend school.
Thus, the old man gave his granddaughter the only kindness he still had the right to give: A chance at a life on her own. He gave her a new identity - good enough to fool the authorities - and enrolled her into a good school in a different city.
Thus at the age of 13, the girl became Kusanagi Kanna, a student in Tokyo.
With her wits and quirk, she actually got by living on her own. She became an unpleasant delinquent, having few friends and reacting violently to bullying attempts - often getting suspended as a result. Soon, she began learning martial arts both as a means of self defense and to give her a measure of control over her temper, though that discipline never actually spread to her lifstyle: Smoke, coffee, drugs... You name it.
Not to mention her diet, consisting mostly of junk food and energy drinks...
This unruly nature reflected on her appearance as well, proudly exhibited with a myriad tattoos and piercings. Yet despite the antagonistic aura, she showed a soft spot to victims of abuse like she once was, and often aided those with nobody else to turn to. She remained among the top students as well, despite any lack of ambition towards higher education.
As a student, she obviously had her fair share of talent, enough to take over a budding Computer Club with a rather flashy display of skill, casually shutting down the entire club room upon being denied access to its resources. Fellow students scarcely saw the reclusive club president, but the student council saw her well enough when the time comes to distribute funds. The school's sleek and responsive web platform has her signature all over it, as she's been upgrading and improving its usability throughout her tenue. Though the platform has grown significantly more secure, her involvement with the system also yielded a treasure trove of power and information on most people who ever used it... Only the future would tell what she'd use it for.
Yet the things that really mattered; her skills as a hacker, her dataflow quirk... They had to be developed in secret. That was, until a certain school opened.
In 2072, her grandfather invited her to enroll at a new school, moving to the Academy for Heroes. Though the very name made her roll her eyes, his knowledge startled her. The last time her family members heard of her Quirk, even Kanna herself didn't know what it actually entailed. But as her grandfather spoke to her, she fully deduced just how much he actually did know, and why he'd found her the first time. Did he have the same quirk as she did...? Yeah, that seemed like the most likely explanation. In that case, did her worthless old man had it too? No way, he complained about her freak ability far too much. Then, had it skipped a generation...?
Yoshinori promised he'd answer all her questions one day, if she were still interested, and Kanna herself conceded she most likely wouldn't. She'd find the answers herself, perhaps even in this school...
First though, she'd have to graduate from this new school for "Heroes", Yuuei as they called it. She had no trouble clearing the entrance exam, as the proctors were kind enough to pit them against mechanical enemies she could hack, binding one to her will, and passing her exam with flying colors. Despite this incredible power, the examiners couldn't help notice this apparent delinquent refrained from farming points near places where she knew the weaker students were struggling for a passing score.
For all her gruffness, the blonde hacker had a good enough heart that she could one day become a proud, powerful hero. But even if they saw great things for her as a support, Kanna outright rejected it: After all, support implied on having competent heroes to do all the heavy lifting. Kanna didn't want to depend on other people being competent so she adamantly refused following the support option, even if it may seem easier with her Quirk - Just like the saying goes, if you want something done right...
UA reinforced this belief, with the amount of drama she found her classmates involved in, but things took a more serious turn once the Army pointed its fangs at the school itself. Nothing quite fostered unity among her and her classmates as such, but somewhere along the line, Kanna realized her ability to get further than her current standing on her own two feet hinged on her ability to be self sufficient... And as it stood, she simply wasn't. The people she actually trusted and few were far between, and even if the number slowly increased as the girl grew, the difference wasn't so noticeable for the aloof loner to choose that path. Semper fi had been a wakeup call, and with the experience gathered in the robotics club, Kanna eventually caught wind of a crash course in Applied Mechanics taught by a former pro, and, sanctioned by the school, was allowed to enroll, taking nightly classes to keep up the her studies and pass the exams.
Her course went on for the better part of a year, and ended just in time for second year... But once Kanna returned, she hardly liked what she saw: UA got a hell of a lot stricter huh...? Good thing she had her own place off campus - living in the dorms sounds like a regulation nightmare - but getting bitched at over her uniform was never a pleasant experience. She actually made the effort to wear that stuffy outfit... Sometimes... Who knows, maybe on some levels the school might have actually changed for the better.
