Karen had been planning on it for a while now. When classes had more or less stabilized and the second years had come back from their break, she had resolved to start checking out the different club offerings available at UA. First on her list was the Martial Arts Club that was located near the other indoor training areas. She had heard that the senior students were quite something. Though she was normally someone proud of her skills, she figured that this was a place where she ought to act with more humility. It wasn't too long ago that she experienced the gap between herself and the upperclassmen personally. So she was hoping that she could find someone here who could help her close that gap. Now Karen wasn't acquainted with anyone at all from the Martial Arts Club. In fact she had very little knowledge among the upperclassmen of who was particularly notable in this sort of thing. She was essentially coming in today blind with nothing but hopeful expectations. Should she have done more research? Perhaps. If she knew exactly who she was looking for, she might have even just gone to them directly instead of going here. But she figured rather than reputation, it might be more worthwhile to seek someone out based on attitude. And so armed with the knowledge that the club was essentially open 24/7, she decided to show up at the ungodly hour of 5 am. If they were up at the time training, then that meant they were pretty diligent right? She chuckled to herself at her little optimistic fantasy. It seemed more likely that she would run into someone who fell asleep after training too hard the night before. Well that was probably diligence in its own way. Since it was still a bit dark out, it was easy enough to spot from a distance that the lights inside the Martial Arts Club were indeed still open. She was suddenly feeling pretty good that her plan might have a decent chance of succeeding after all. She decided to quicken her pace a bit. To warm up for her visit there, she had been jogging the whole way from the dorms wearing her UA tracksuit. It wasn't really too far away but a workout as a workout. Upon reaching the doorway, she took off her shoes and left them at the shoe rack before knocking and entering. "Hello! Is this the Martial Arts Club?"Of course it was. She knew that very well. But she felt like acting the part of the newbie and asking anyway. At first glance the place looked to be a very spacious and well-equipped facility. There were bags of all kinds in one corner, a couple of rings and practice equipment in another corner along with some choice weapons, an open tatami area, and there was even a machine that looked like it could shoot things, presumably at people training their reflexes. And then of course there was the lone figure who was present that morning. She didn't recognize his face as one of the first years, so he was definitely an upperclassman. Upon fully entering the room, she bowed respectfully as per the standard martial artist greeting.

This right here was the rather dumb reason why Darren was up at 5:07 in the morning, after completing that punishment run with Eli that was totally for his good and to forge his character, not because Darren had a big and easily assaulted ego.
Either way, Eli went straight back to bed muttering something about Darren being a psycho, and Darren himself decided to use this rare occasion where the martial arts room would be empty to get in some practice undisturbed. As far as he knew, he was the only one to be that early a bird in the whole school.
Well, you learn something new every day, don’t you?
He opened the sliding wooden door to find a blue-haired girl looking around curiously. So much for free, undisturbed practice, he though with a sight of resignation. “Oi, what are you doin’ here that early?” he asked, walking up to the girl until he stood in front of her, doing his best to hide the slight hint of annoyance that persisted on his face. He already knew the answer. “Wait, I know your face. You’re that girl with the free-flight girl. American name, Japanese surname, what was it again… Hoshizuka Kallen, innit?”
He shook his head. “Anyway, that don’t matter. I’m guessing you must have heard I often go here in the mornings if you’re layin’ there in ambush at 5AM.” He peeped through the window. “It’s still dark outside, for fuck’s sake. Fine, I can appreciate the effort. But if you wanna learn something, then learn by watchin’ first. I was going there for my mornin’ routine before I saw your ass in there.” A few months ago, accidentally suggesting he was looking at a girl’s ass with his shit-talking would have sent his brain in the panic, but he didn’t really care for that anymore. He had morning practice to do.
He set down the sports bag he was carrying by the sandbags and fished out a pair of bag gloves, bigger and more padded than match gloves, well suited for relentless pounding on the sandbags. He threw his sneakers to the side and slid on his shin guards instead. Stretched a little, tested his distance with a slow motion jab. Dressed in his black sports shorts and red breathable t-shirt, with the gloves on and the shin guards, he looked like a pro fighter on training camp. “There’s a bunch of free-use gloves over there,” he said, pointing to a box on the floor with his chin, in which were threwn all sorts of gloves of all shapes and sizes, even one clearly not meant to be worn by ‘regular’ human hands.
The first punch he threw showed he did not just look like a pro fighter on a training camp.
The bag certainly bulged and swung impressively, but it wasn’t necessarily the power of Darren’s blows that was impressive. It was the timing and the accuracy with which he hit the bag on the backswing, the justness and snappiness of his footwork around the bag, the variety and speed of his punches, kicks, elbows and knees, flowing smoothly into one another with seemingly no stutter in the transitions, harassing the bag with the tenacity of a really, really, really annoying mosquito.
Ten uninterrupted minutes of that -- and if you ever training on a sandbag before, you know how long that is -- and he finally stopped the onslaught, wiped his brow and said, not without a certain self-awareness of how cheesily faux badass the line sounded: “Alright, all done with the warm-up.”

Just a few seconds after their first face to face meeting and Karen already found herself at a disadvantage. The upperclassman knew her name, sort of. Well it was close enough. And he knew her quirk too. She wondered when he could have known as there weren't many people she had given a personal demonstration to until she came to the realization that she did talk about her quirk once in school chatroom. She tried to recall who was present at the time. It was almost all girls, with the exception of Jack, Red and Darren. And since she was absolutely sure the one standing in front of her wasn't Jack or Red, then this must be the famous Darren-senpai in the flesh. Which was lucky indeed. Because she did remember him mentioning something about being able to fly too. "It's Karen actually. Good morning Darren-senpai! And yeah, sorry for bothering you while it's still dark out."While he mentioned that he was known for being an early riser, Karen herself didn't actually know. This was purely coincidence. But she figured it was better not mention that. Either way the misunderstanding seemed to have worked out as Darren did assume that she tried to ambush him to learn a few things. He must really be someone special if this sort of thing happened to him a lot. He directed her attention to a box with some practice gloves and so she headed on over there to grab a pair while the upperclassman himself put on his own practice gear. There was quite a big collection of gloves, including some that looked like they weren't meant to be worn by human hands. Thankfully everything was organized in boxes so it wasn't too hard to find some her size. She then returned back to the sandbag area where Darren was getting ready to begin his workout. Sitting down in a kneeling position on the mat, she watched as he went to work on that sandbag. And it was such a sight to see. Strength and speed were a given. That bag was taking a lot of punishment, evident from the bulges and the way it swung from Darren's strikes. But more than that there was a sense of rhythm in his movements as each strike he made seemed to transition real smoothly to the next. She tried to guess what kind of style he used but she could only conclude that it was a mixture of various styles. That was more common these days as fighters realize no one style could really provide on with all the tools they needed to win. Karen was the same. But the big difference here was how the upperclassman was able to thread these different strikes together almost flawlessly. At least that was what she could see at her current level. By the time his workout ended, Karen felt as though she just snapped out of a trance upon hearing Darren speak. She didn't even notice how much time had passed since she was so absorbed with watching. But apparently this was just a warm-up. She briefly glanced at the wall clock and saw that it had been about ten minutes. Even the stamina that she was a little proud of was nothing much here it seemed. A sandbag workout that long was certainly possible for her, but she wouldn't go so far as call it just a warm-up. She stood back up eagerly, wondering what was next. "That was great senpai! Your footwork and punches made me think you practiced boxing, but there were a whole bunch of other things mixed in there too. I'm a little jealous of how you make it look so easy putting them all together like that."She guessed that Darren was no more than two or three years older with a year of experience in hero studies over her. How much of this was something he already had prior to entering UA and how much did he learn in that one year? Karen had been hoping to meet someone like him. The reason she tried to avoid looking into people's backgrounds so much is because she wanted to obtain her own personal impressions of them. So far she liked what she saw. She wasn't really the type to be bothered by rough manners of speaking so that wasn't a point against him at all.

At the end of his “warmup” -- not that he’d ever admit it, but of course he was showing off a little -- he had just been running after all -- Darren turned around to see the blue-haired girl as transfixed, before she snapped up and awake. “Damn, I thought you’d have taken the hint when I showed you the gloves. Anyway. Yes, good eye, I practice boxing in the Fujikawa gym in Musutafu. It’s a more balanced basis for martial arts than people think it is, really. But you’re right, there’s a bunch of other stuff in here. I pick what works and I tinker. And I practice a lot.” He slapped the bag behind him with the bag of his glove. “Been doing this over a year. Anyway, if you’re here, I won’t turn you down. Go warm up on the bags or something for a minute, I’ll get some shit ready.”
Leaving her with those wise words, he went to the storage room and came out with a big cardboard box, that he set down next to the resting tennis ball cannon. The box was filled with round, transparent plastic drum magazines, themselves filled with tennis balls, with a feeder at the bottom and another slot on top of the magazine. Darren set one up on top of the cannon, tested the rotation of the barrel and armed the feeding system whistling a menacingly innocent tune, occasionally shooting a glance at Karen that meant “stop looking at what I’m doing and keep warming up, you’re gonna need it.”
Once he was done, he called her to the machine with a whistle. “Nice baby, eh? It’s been here since this room opened. It used to have only one barrel, but I got the support nerds to upgrade it. They made the drum magazines too. And look!” He grabbed another magazine and stacked it on top of the other with a click. “The magazines feed each other! Perfect for endurance sessions. Amazing what these support nerds can do.”
He gave her a few seconds to appreciate the engineering and marinate in what was likely a mounting sensation of “what did I get myself into.”
“Anyway, we’re not gonna use it right now. Step back a little,” he continued, and he walked up in front of her and put up a guard. “First, show me what you can do. Do whatever, try to land a hit, use that quirk of yours too if you want, just don’t fucking break anything. If you can land a hit, I’ll lower the speed setting one crank. Ready? Doesn’t matter, go!”

She suddenly felt a bit embarrassed that she had just been literally watching the entire time and not doing warm-ups of her own. As she had been jogging before making her way to the club, technically she had already done a bit. But seeing her upperclassman work in the sandbag did make her a little antsy about giving the bag a few hits herself. "Sorry, I don't normally space out like this. But I guess I just don't get the chance to watch people up close making moves like that often. It was quite inspiring senpai."Putting on the gloves she picked up earlier, she walked towards a smaller bag than the one Darren was at earlier. She pondered for a moment how to attack this target. Should she mix it up like her upperclassman did? Well she wasn't really here to show off. And she was sure anything mix up she tried would just look worse compared to what she saw earlier and might not be too encouraging. Thus she decided to stick with one of her striking basics which was karate and took a stance in front of the bag. The first couple of minutes or so she devoted to punches. While she couldn't compare in speed and power to her upperclassman, she at least had good form. She would start with a regular stance and then halfway through switch to a southpaw stance, showing that she was ambidextrous to an extent. After the round of punches she would then switch to kicks. Here she could mix it up a little, throwing high, middle and low kicks, again demonstrating that she was capable of throwing a good one with either her left or right. Darren seemed to be busy setting up something but she tried her best not to lose focus. She was getting into a groove herself. To end her warm up she decided to attack the bag with a quick combination that she could chain continuously, though for this exercise she only kept it up for about half a minute. She would then return to her stance and take a deep breath. To think that Darren kept this up for ten minutes and called it a warm up. Hearing a whistle from her upperclassman, she realized that Darren must have been done with what he was setting up too. She headed on over and listened to his description of contraption she had spotted earlier when she first entered the club room. As she had guessed, it was meant to shoot things for practice, in this case tennis balls. But it appeared Darren had modified from earlier and was now talking about how it would be used for endurance training. That sounded both interesting but also difficult. Well she had not seen how fast the balls actually go yet but she assumed they were pretty close to how fast Darren was moving earlier. Which meant she might not be able to engage properly in this training if she tried. Fortunately it seemed Darren was just showing off the contraption and he had other plans for her in the meantime. Land a hit? That was easier said than done even if she could use her quirk. Perhaps watching Darren too closely earlier wasn't the best move for her confidence. But she had to try. She released her aura, which took a couple of seconds longer than usual to fully surround her, as opposed to a near instant cover if she was less clothed. She was now glowing with a bright reddish hue as she took up her own stance. Judging from how it felt, it was at around 80 percent power. Maybe even 90 in short bursts. She would be relying on the aura to give her a boost in speed. He did warn not to break anything so it was probably best that she wasn't going all out. Darren's guard looked solid. It didn't seem like she would be able to find an opening attacking high up. Considering their height difference, it would be a bit of a reach too, at least without the aid of her quirk. She would approach him cautiously, constantly shifting her weight from one leg to another. Was he really just going to defend or would he hit back too? Not knowing for sure made her a little nervous. She would attempt a couple of feints with punches that she would stop partway and pull back, to gauge how her upperclassman would react and to try keeping his focus on his upper body. After doing it a couple of times, she would approach again and this time when she pulled back her left arm, she would chain that motion to go for a low roundhouse kick with her right leg aimed at the side of his shin. If he was as solid as he looked, then it probably felt like kicking a rock. She would then follow-up with a move that only someone who could defy gravity could probably pull. Using her right leg as a pivot, she would twist her body again and perform a mid air spinning hook kick aimed at the side of his body. Karen would be practically floating at this point. But this would be her current level at attempting to apply her martial arts with her quirk. The transition from grounded use to mid air techniques was just not something she had gotten the hang of yet. To be honest she was capable of much trickier maneuvers in the air, but today was martial arts day so she tried her best to stick with that.

“Aye aye, then shut up and showed me how it inspired you,” he said on a casual smile, the first hints of a half-smile drawing themselves on the corner of his lips.
His guard was similar to a boxer’s, or to a Philly shell guard to be exact: right gloves guarded the chin, while the left one guarded his waist and crotch. To his opponent presented his left elbow and shoulder, and relied on those, as well as his footwork, to defend himself. And, of course, his quirk. Opposite him, the blue-haired girl gathered a red aura around which he assumed had something to do with her quirk, unless he’d found himself facing an actual demon for some weird karmic reason.
Karen, as her name actually was, approached him with a series of feints with her hands, pulling back in the middle of feints. Darren calmly met them with twitches of the shoulder, confident his his ability to roll off her hits and elbow them away; he didn’t hesitate to twitch his left hand either, adding to the question he purposefully left in the air -- whether he was going to counter-attack or not. For now, he let the early bird try and catch the mentor.
Her real attack came in the way of a vicious low-kick to the chin, transitioning off the motion of one of her feints. Her rhythm was good, the attack flowed quickly, but alas, she was fighting Darren, a senpai with a year of experience over her, and that was always going to be an unfair match-up. He quite boringly checked the kick, raising his leg to block her tibia with the thick part of the bone, but Karen was yet to show her true colors as a fighter.
Pivoting off the leg that had just finished kicking, she gave gravity the middle finger and swung around to whip in a nastly left spinning heel kick to the midsection. Once again, even more boringly, Darren calmly transitioned to covering his ribs with a solid block. Much like Feng, this girl had technique, speed and agility, but she lacked stopping power. Also much like Feng, her movement was reminiscent of Autokinesis, although in a different manner; while the chinese girl’s sprung legs reproduced the explosivity of his quirk, Karen’s reproduced its freedom of movement, albeit with a much smoother movement.
“Right, I heard you was a flyin’ girl.” The grin on his face was an order of magnitude less boring than his defense had been so far. “I guess I should strut my stuff then.” On that note, he disappeared.
Well, not exactly, but he was pulled to his right with an urgency and abruptness that made it feel like he disappeared, with only the deep blue sparks of Autokinesis left behind to piece together what happened. Two activations later, he was already taking her back and grabbing her right wrist from behind. “Let’s dance!”
What he called dancing was spinning around with his quirk while keeping a firm hold on his “dance partner”’s wrist before releasing them on a collision course with the tatami below. He did it at speed, but in keeping with his earlier desire not to break anything, he held back, throwing her softly enough that he expected someone with a self-described “true flight” quirk to find back her balance before she’d crash on the ground.
If she successfully managed to land, however, she would find herself face-to-face with Darren, a big smile plastered across his face, and he would throw a lighting-quick kinetic-enhanced jab that’d stop an inch from her face, to test her reflexes. The delinquent was, as you’d expect, on the rougher side of the mentor scale.

That exchange turned out to be just as expected. His response to her feints told her enough that if she went through with any of them, he would easily catch it. She wasn't fast enough or strong enough so she wasn't getting through any blocks today. As for trying to outmaneuver her upperclassman, experience was not on her side and even pulling a move that a normal person wouldn't have been able to do was met with an efficient no-nonsense block. After a little quip at her flying ability, Darren promptly vanished from sight, apparently intending to strut his stuff. "Dance?"She floated back in an upright position and quickly glanced around. It seemed Darren was going to hit back after all or at least he gave that impression. It was really surprising how easily she just lost sight of the upperclassman because of how fast he was moving. Not even Jasmine who had used explosive power to get around was this bad to track. She did catch sight of some bluish sparks that she assumed had to do with Darren's quirk, but before she could figure it out, she was grabbed from behind, specifically her wrist. The grip was tight like a vice, demonstrating the stark difference in their strength. Even if she put her all into it, she had a feeling that her hand would break off first before she could get out of there. Not that she was given any breaks to even try. She was suddenly being taken for a spin. Was he trying to get her dizzy now? She didn't want to just get carried at his pace though and so with her free hand she actually reached up and grabbed Darren's wrist back. She held on as hard as she could. She wasn't sure how effective it would be but she would try to capitalize on the momentum of the spin with her own flight. When he proceeded to hurl her down on the mat she would do her best to continue hanging on to him and attempt to use her flight power to throw him off balance by also flying downward at the same time. While she was still holding on to him she would try to drag him downward too. She was hoping combining her own power with his would do something. But unlike him, she didn't have an iron grip to ensure it succeeded. Whatever happened, whether he was pulled down or he managed to shake her off, when she finally let go, she would stop herself from crashing at the last moment and cruise along just an inch or so above the surface the mat facing upwards with her arms putting up a guard in case Darren came at her again. Her goal was to get to a wall or corner to minimize the number of directions the upperclassman could approach her from. It wasn't the best plan but her mind at the moment was focused on trying not to get overwhelmed by his speed and mobility.

Karen had indeed found herself in a spar with UA’s resident speedster; blessed not only with sheer velocity, Autokinesis also allowed for that movement speed to be applied freely, as long as he was not being kept rooted or immobilized by a grab for example -- so in a way, grabbing his wrist was not entirely the wrong idea.
However, though Darren, she should have felt the strength of his grip. There was already a lesson there, and Darren knew no better way of teaching than by example. On their way down, the blue-haired kouhai attempted to destabilize his flight using her own ability, but she was met with quick and precise course-corrections from her senpai, who kept an easygoing smile on his lips and a strong grip on her wrist.
Instead of his planned jab, when they landed, he quickly moved his leg behind hers to hook her ankle and trip her down. Now he knew that this wouldn’t be enough to mow down a flight user, but that’s why he still had her wrist in a grip. With his other hand, he grabbed her by the collar and added his upper body strength and weight to the tripping attempt. He aimed quite simply to fall on her and pin her on her back, controlling the leg he tripped in a judo hold and still pinning her down by the arm with the clear menace of an armbar.
“Wrong!” he said, still on top of her, very aware of how scummily menacing he looked, pinning down an underclassman like that; that was the point. As mentioned previously, Darren was on the rough side of the anime teacher scale, and he believed a good scare made for a good lesson. “Grabbing someone faster than you is a good idea, usually, but it ain’t if they’re also stronger. Strong guys can pin you down like that, an’ you lose your speed advantage. Against a stronger fighter, you should rely on your own strengths.”
He let her go and got back up, save for the wrist by which he helped her up, and finally let go for real. “Got it? Good. Alright, this time I’ll only defend, for real, I promise. Strut your stuff, and keep mobile. Use your strengths, you gonna need ‘em.” The poor girl was given no time to process what just happened that she was already being asked to punch back... And for all his promises of not hitting back, Darren sure liked to twitch his jab hand a lot.

In a normal martial arts situation, this would be the part where she would get a bit of praise for attempting to use a bigger opponent's strength against them. But without a full understanding of Darren's quirk, rather than the smooth momentum she was expecting, she was almost immediately met with resistance. Or rather the upperclassman kept his upright position, taking control of the motions, and they both landed on their feet. Not that that would last long. Still holding on to her wrist, he tried to trip her, followed by grabbing her collar and applying his full weight on the take down. She actually recognized this as a judo move, but in terms of attempting a counter the weight and strength advantage was too big to overcome. It was happening too fast for her to get into a better position anyway. And before she knew it, she was pinned down and mounted and set up in a position where Darren could easily go for an arm bar to wreck her even further if he wanted to. She did attempt to wiggle out of there out of habit, but the pin and hold was solid. She could only managed a pained smile of resignation as Darren so eloquently explained her error. It was true. Because of her lack of information there, she mistakenly thought that she could overcome his strength with what she attempted. It was a lot more difficult to gauge things like that when gravity wasn't a factor. As a result, she only cut her own mobility while her opponent remained free to apply their strength as they wished. "Right, that was presumptuous of me Darren-senpai."There was an ever so slight change in tone from the way Karen had been speaking all this time, like a tinge of regret or someone trying to hide their frustration from losing. A truly good girl might have gotten a scare from Darren's little show of force, but for Karen who had been getting shown her place for the nth time since coming to UA some other feelings were getting kindled. There was only so much 'failure' a girl who had spent much of her life winning could take. They weren't easy victories by any means, but were successes just the same. She had first thought that being in the position of the disadvantaged learner was something she could easily handle. And she had been doing a good job so far. But there was something different about this time. Maybe it was because everyone else before now had been a bit kinder. But as a result of this rougher treatment, her more competitive side was starting to surface. Of course of all people, Karen understood herself the best and so she also noticed this change. She took a deep breath to calm herself down as Darren helped her back up and mentioned it was her turn again to try landing another hit. She restrained herself from making a witty remark when he promised he wouldn't hit back this time and just nodded silently, blinking a couple of times before finding her focus. To be honest she really wanted to stick with using martial arts. But if Darren's last statement meant that he wanted to see her full mobility in action, then she would have to let that sentiment go for now. At least in her opinion, her current flight moves just didn't mesh that well with her martial arts moves other than maybe getting her into position to execute them. It just wasn't as slick and smooth. The first sign of her switching it up would be abandoning her footwork. Instead she would elect to hover a couple of inches above the ground. Kicking or pushing off the ground was useless to her as she could fly much faster than she could run or jump. Minimizing her contact with anything at all was the best thing for her to maintain her speed as she could change direction on a whim without any outside help. She would begin to circle around Darren while keeping her body facing in his direction, maintaining a distance of about ten paces from him. She was essentially flying sideways clockwise around the him with him as the center. It only took about half a revolution for her to reach her top speed at her current aura state, but even she knew this was probably not much compared to his speed. Not to mention her aura light trail made it a bit easier to keep track of her or at least the direction she was going. She would use this opportunity to try and look for possible openings to make her approach. Should he remain stationary, after about a three or four rounds she would suddenly zoom in from his seven o'clock assuming twelve was the direction he was facing. Predicting that he would react to this, she would feint and suddenly shift her trajectory upwards when she was within punching range, flying overhead and then once back down zoom a bit to the side before finally coming in from the three o'clock position with a straight kick. Should this get blocked, she would immediately retreat back to her earlier distance of ten paces. However should she sense that he would attempt to grab her leg she would flip upward to the ceiling at the last moment and then come down with a heel drop. Similarly, she would also retreat quickly after making contact.

He detected a familiar hint of frustration in Karen's voice as he helped the blue-haired lass up. It was a frustration he had once known too, back when he was a new student; recognizing it put a quick smile on his face. Getting into UA was a feat in and of itself, and as such, the new arrivals were often brimming with confidence. They were the strongest around where they came from, they weren't used to defeat, just like Darren once was, and most importantly, they had little idea of the strength Yuuei hid among the ranks of their student base.
True enough, facing Darren was not exactly a fair match for a newbie, but it served as a good example of the new levels of strength one could reach in a more competitive environment like UA. Not being the top dog anymore forced one to improve and get stronger; that was a lesson the proud delinquent had to learn in pain and defeat over the last year. He understood her frustration, but he also understood that he'd do her no favors going easy.
Karen quickly sprang back to action, abandonning footwork for hovering. She started circling him like an outboxer, making use of the speed and agility afforded by her quirk; he followed her revolutions with quick steps, staying where he was and making sure never to lose eye contact, the same easy smile on his face. It was bound to frustrate her too, but Darren was making it clear he was not having a hard time. Work through the frustration, he said with his eyes. Let it make you stronger.
Finally she went on the attack, charging him from his seven. He kept his guard solid and tight, not moving a muscle before she got in range. Just like him, her quirk didn't afford her any sort of range or damage, so she had to close in; hence, he knew he had nothing to worry about before she got into striking range. There she feinted a strike and leapt above him, which didn't fail to widen his smile; how many times had he used that tactic before? They really had very similar quirks.
He kept tracking her with his eyes and repositioned himself with another pair of quick steps, and to see if the previous lesson made its way into her head, met the kick with a forearm block which quickly turned into a grab. To his delight, he grasped nothing but empty air, and stepped back to avoid her somersault heel drop, just far enough to avoid the kick, still in range for a counterattack -- to which she reacted by taking her distance as well.
"Not bad," he quipped. "Good technique, good instincts, but it lacks power. You'll want to work on that in the weight room and on the bags." The same easy, annoying smile adorned his lips. He showed skill in his moves, a mastery of distance, sharp reactions and sure feet, but there was a distinct lack of effort in his attitude. Again, he was perfectly aware of it and did it on purpose, testing the bluenette's patience and mental as well as her strength and ability. "Once more, with grinta. You're a quick one, make use of that. Throw more attacks, but throw them with purpose. Don't punch just to punch, you're trying to break my guard open. Chase after me when I'm on the backstep, your objective is to land a hit. Feinting is good, use it more. Play up to your strengths."
He opened his guard ever so slightly, inviting the girl to come at him once more.

Well that turned out to be a lie. While most of the exchange went about as expected, instead of just defending like Darren said he would, he tried to grab her after all on that last bit. Though judging from how she actually managed to avoid that, she wondered if that was just another scare attempt on his part as she moved back and put some distance between them. If he counted faking her out as 'not attacking' then that was another set of things to worry about in this exercise. Not to mention the way he was making it look so easy for him was frankly getting on her nerves. Just a bit. For the second time today her lack of power was called out and brought to attention. Perhaps more than all the taunting and white lies and 'scares' this was what got to Karen the most. It was a stereotypical thing. Karen took up martial arts to be able to face those who were stronger than her. Her teachers would often talk about philosophies like using your opponent's strength against them. Or that with the proper technique, it was possible for someone smaller and weaker to overcome a bigger and more powerful opponent. Karen took these to heart and for the most part had some success with it in her small pond. But the world was a much bigger place. Just attending a different school and already some of her beliefs were being challenged. "I believe you senpai and I'm sure there's no situation where having strength to spare isn't a bad thing. But..."She shook her head to literally shake off the distracting thoughts. They were still in the middle of their spar, for lack of better term. There would be time to talk about martial arts policies and philosophies later. The goal was still the same. She had to try to land a hit. The suggestion from the upperclassman seemed to be to try throwing more attacks. She could do that but adding her flight to the equation was something still quite difficult for her at this time if not taxing. The sense of weight to her strikes was something she partially lost whenever she tried to combine her attacks with her quirk hence the more conservative amount of actual attacks she threw. She would just have to make it work somehow. The way her quirk worked was mental. She flew around as her thoughts dictated, but the more actions and tasks she added to that the less sharp her thoughts become and that affected her flight. She wasn't going to back down from this challenge though. She was also interested in how far she could push this after all. She would begin her approach utilizing a zigzag motion while also changing up her acceleration instead of employing a constant speed. This would appear as though she was moving around in short bursts while occasionally slowing down to try and throw off her upperclassman's timing. Of course she wasn't any real threat until striking range but she at least wanted to show that against a lesser opponent she was capable of using seemingly erratic movements and motions to make her advance more unpredictable. Above, below, right in the middle, she would constantly shift her attacking stance up until the last moment though this might already be a less effective feint style against Darren who already knew she could attack from an irregular angle thanks to her quirk. It was worth a try anyway. Left, right, below. Those would be the final motions until she went for her first attack, a spinning wheel kick to the head with her right leg, except it didn't have the usual big wind up because her quirk took care of just propelling her leg where she wanted to even coming from a low position. Spinning the rest of her body counterclockwise her position would shift deeper into to the right side where she would use the momentum to throw a punch in the middle section. Once more she would continue spinning in a counterclockwise direction with her third attack being a spinning heel kick with her left leg at his back. She would execute this combo as fast as she could, kicking off away from Darren after the last one. She wouldn't return to her usual starting distance however and from only five paces away she would suddenly zoom right back at his face with a convincing knee. Her earlier straightforward combo was to make him think she was literally going to just attack him several times but here should stop short and somersault back before making contact to try and bait him into guarding his head. The flip would transition to a punch to gut instead where afterward she would once again withdraw quickly after making contact. Her final move would be fly to his three o'clock position right after, then his six and then finally above. This would suspiciously look similar to her movements in the previous round except instead of finishing it up with an attack from above, again another kick, she would adjust her trajectory to come up short. She would position herself as low as her flight quirk allowed without touching the ground, trying to keep behind him and out of his field of vision until she had a clear shot to tackle the back of his knee with her shoulder. Of course she didn't forget that Darren was stronger. But this time she was hoping a full body tackle at his lowest point might be effective at taking him down. It wasn't as though she was planning to pin or hold him down anyway after. Should it work, she would try one last kick to his side as he 'fell' before retreating. It wasn't anything fancy but she thought the surprise might make it more unlikely to guard from that position. But then he was a flyer too. Guarding from unusual positions was probably easier for him than it was for Karen.

Darren knew that “but”, for he had uttered it himself so many times before. He saw it sting the girl when he brought up her lack of power, and he could relate. Darren might seem strong when he broke stone slabs and bent bars of bronze and soft metals, but the truth was that among the school’s top students, he was the weakest in terms of damage. Jasmine’s leveling blasts, Tetsuko’s iron-cutting swords, Yumi’s searing thunder, even Elise’s tentacles were all more powerful than his strongest blows. Good old-fashioned strength training only took him so far; just like Karen, Darren instead relied on his mobility and his skill to fight. One of his punches might not compare, but he was fond of boasting that for every hit these “muscle-brained monkeys” managed to land, he’d land five back.
For now, however, Karen was back on the offensive, as instructed, and his grin only widened when he saw her approach him in a zig-zag pattern. It was a less mischievous grin than usual; it even incorporated elements of a proud smile. He used the same exact technique to get close to his opponents, something he dubbed the Kinetic Advance, and seeing it from the receiving end had something really cool about it. More than that, she even did the thing where she varied the speed of her impulsions to keep herself unpredictable!
It was like fighting a mirror image of himself when he first came to the school, if mirrors did genderbending.
He had a lesson to teach, however, he reminded himself as she reached melee range and, after another series of feints, finally began her assault. First came a wheel kick to the head, helped by her quirk, sudden and unpredictable, as she didn’t need the usual wind-up lesser people needed with their slavish obedience of the laws of gravity. As a regular user of the move himself, Darren’s surprise was short-lived and he simply leaned back, letting the girl’s heel whistle a few centimeters from his chin. Her next move came immediately, a liver blow using rotational power to add weight to the strike. Another creative attack. He almost felt bad frustrating it with a simple elbow block, using strength instead of skill this time. Third came a spinning heel, off the rotation of the liver blow, overextended to hit him in the back. He smiled, two sparks cracked at his feet, and he stepped out of range with an activation of his quirk.
“Alri--”
He tried putting a stop to it, but Karen wasn’t done. She came back with a quick literal flying knee to the face, and, almost surprised, Darren put up his guard. The knee never came; it was a feint for a stomach blow, as she flipped her way back down to earth to punch him right above the belt. Darren’s pride protested, but his growing teacher’s instincts were adamant; he had to take this punch. He clenched his abdominal muscles. The blow landed. He grinned and put his hand on her head.
“Alright, Kallen, very well done,” he boomed, unclear if he had forgotten her correct name or if he was doing it on purpose. “I like the cut of your jib, or whatever it is them oldhead senseis like to say. I know what imma teach you. Follow me.”
He walked back to the sandbags, from which their fight had led them away from, hopefully with Karen in tow. “I didn’t think I was that right when I said we had similar fighting styles, holy shit. You use your quirk in all the right ways. That zigzag thing when you keep changing speed, keep training that. That’s your best bet for getting close to the ranged goons. I know its hard thinking of where to activate your quirk next, but be careful not to do the same shit over and over, or you’ll get caught and get your ass handed to you. You don’t want that. Your feinting game is good, but keep working on it too. But, most importantly…”
They arrived next to the sandbags. Darren punched one off-handedly to give his next word more impact. “Power. I know, it’s annoying. Every dumbass around thinks its all about power and nothing else, but it’s about as stupid to try and go without it. You felt it when you landed that stomach blow, didn’t you? Strong people won’t go down just because you land a punch on them.” He marked a dramatic pause.
“Martial arts are all about beating strong people. Technique is a way to do it, but it will only take you so far. Speed. Mobility. All very good things to have. It will get you where you need to be, and pull you out of danger. In fact, it’s probably more important for hero work than everything else. But in a fight, you can’t ignore power. When you fight a villain, you have to put them down as fast as you can.” He demonstrated; all of a sudden, blue sparks coursed his arms and two power punches in quick succession rocked the poor sandbag. “Maybe if you’re very quick, or very skilled, you can put them down too. Maybe you can patiently wait for the counter opportunity while they keep destroying things around them. Or maybe they’re on the run and they won’t stay and fight, and you have to put them down on your own. Or maybe they’ll just ignore you because you can’t hurt them anyway.”
Once again, he punched the sandbag for impact, both literal and metaphorical. The poor thing was not even done swinging that it received another devastating hit, sending it right back to dangling by its chains. “Like it or not, heroes need power. I can teach you that. I can teach you to use the ground to generate power, and I can teach you how to give your strikes weight in mid-air. What do you say, Kallen?”
He steadied the swinging bag with the same hand that punched it and gave the girl his best attempt at a warm smile. The sparks in his eye however didn’t lie. Surprising as it was, giving how he usually carried himself, Darren had been discovering himself a real passion for teaching. At first, he only did it to get himself more strong opponents to have fun with; over the last year, however, he caught himself feeling proud about people who weren’t himself, which, to the narcissistic delinquent psychopath, was new. Some could argue that he was only interested in teaching because he liked feeling better than everybody else, and there would certainly be weight to their argument. The facts stayed, however, that Darren had just found himself the perfect trainee and he was more eager than ever to teach her everything he knew.

It was challenging. She wasn't sure what exactly Darren was looking for but in a straightforward encounter like this where she was outclassed in every way it didn't seem possible to land a clean hit. So when her punch to his stomach actually connected it didn't feel real. She was about 99% sure she was only allowed to get that hit in. Aside from that, she may not have put all her power into it but it still felt like punching a solid wall in the literal sense. Even without putting up a guard it didn't seem like she could hurt the upperclassman anyway. So he was like a wall in the metaphorical sense too. She was snapped back into reality by the feeling of a hand touching her head. There was no 'hostile' intent from it which made the experience seem out of character considering how Darren had been like the whole time before that moment. She caught herself on this though before taking the thought further. This was the first time they've met and it would have been rude to make assumptions about his character so early. Clearly there was more to this tough guy exterior despite his inability to her name right. At this point she didn't feel like correcting him anymore. She wondered if it was relief that the exercise was all over that made her calm down a bit more. It didn't feel like a win at all or at least not the kind she was expecting. But if Darren decided that he had seen enough then she would trust him for now. He seemed serious about the teaching part at least. And while his words were still a little rough, that was a compliment wasn't it? "Thanks senpai. I appreciate it."She followed him back to the sandbag area listening as he continued to comment on their exercise. It was more positive things and it was doing a decent job of lifting up Karen's spirits a bit after those mild frustrations from earlier. His tips were on point as well. Having never had anyone to properly practice with before coming to UA, Karen found that she sometimes fell into the habit defaulting to similar patterns when executing flight maneuvers. Moving according to instincts and adapting to the flow of the fight was something she had picked up from practicing martial arts, but it seemed that had yet to really leak into her usage of her quirk. But it should come with time, and now she had plenty of people to help her work on it. The final point and probably the reason Darren had been buttering her up for the last minute or so was bringing down once more the unfortunate truth that in the current standard of things Karen was lacking in the power department. The sound from the impact the upperclassman's punch made on the sandbag rang in her ears more than the statement it was meant to emphasize. She already knew what he was trying to say and she nodded in acknowledgement. The short speech that came after the dramatic pause made a lot of sense. Darren had this way with words that was a little surprising and different from what Karen was expecting. But at the same time it was very convincing. She couldn't help but listen with rapt attention. She wasn't sure if it was this aura of confidence he had, or because what he spoke about was really relatable, or even because she had gotten the chance to face him personally and be soundly defeated. This was a person who told things like it was and was insightful enough that Karen could trust them to point out things that she didn't notice on her own. As far as Karen was concerned, Darren checked all the boxes for the kind of mentor she was looking for. So when he actually offered himself to teach her things, she couldn't believe her fortune. This entire time she was expecting she might have to be the one asking for lessons. The upperclassman had no obligation to look after a lower year and he didn't initially give off the vibe of the teaching type. Though that impression of hers pretty much changed in the last few minutes. What a great find. "Yes, please do! I'd love to learn more from you senpai!"She did her best not to come off as being overly enthusiastic. She was certainly pleased about this arrangement and Darren appeared to be really on board this teaching thing. He was smiling 'warmly' or at least it looked that way and she appreciated his offer. But she wanted to be considerate to the upperclassman as well. She tried to find out what exactly he had in mind for lessons. "To be honest I should be the one asking you senpai. I'd hate to take too much of your time away from your own practice."

He brushed off the bluenette’s comment with a shrug. “Nah, it’s fine. The sooner you turn into a proper sparring partner, the better for me,” he said with am impish smile, pointing at his head to underline his advanced intelligence. Leaving her to wonder just exactly how uninterested his teachings were, he quickly transitioned into the lesson. “Okay, number one most important shit. Stay grounded.” He let it hang in the air for a second. “Don’t look at me like a fookin sardine, think about it. If you don’t have to, don’t go up. It’s fine down there too. First of all, if the other guy don’t know you, you get the element of surprise, he don’t know what your quirk is, and it sure as hell ain’t gonna happen if you fly in T-posing through the window. If they do know you, they’ll try to figure something out to keep you grounded, and you’re gonna wanna know how to handle your ass down there. One time in junior high I fought some dude from another school, and that dickless bastard had one of his flunkies melt the asphalt with his quirk. Shit was a tar pit, I was up to the ankles, those assholes ruined my shoes too. Point is, they ganged on me and I had to fight off five dudes while I couldn’t lift a fuckin toe. That’s where I got my first scar on the right shoulder!” He was embellishing a little. In truth, it was three dudes, and he got his ass kicked. The scar thing was true, though. “Anyway, what I mean is just because you can’t fly don’t mean you always have to go up in the air. You can fly on the ground, though. Watch.” He grabbed one of the sandbags and dragged it into a more central position to the metallic sound of the chains and the grating of the ceiling rails. Once in position, he confirmed once more that she was watching and demonstrated. “Watch the legs,” he said. The blue sparks that came on when his quirk was in use started coursing his legs, and an instant later he was circling around the sandbag at speed, peppering it with jabs all the while, quickly changing directions. He stepped to the right, an actual, proper step, before suddenly being pulled to the left by an activation of his quirk, circled for a while, stopped, went again, feinted changing the direction of his rotation, kept going, changed for real, turned back the other way, turned again, and finally feinted going left and right with small activations, like a metronome gone crazy, before finally spinning on himself and delivering a straight lateral kick of the rotation, sparks cracking decisively through both legs and shoulders. “See? You don’t have to fly up. Flying to the side or flying down is good shit too. Thing is, you can feint like a motherfucker. You can actually step in one direction, no fake or nothin’, and just completely go the other way, and if you do it right there’s no way to read that but guess. That’s because you’re on the ground. The ground helps you change direction. Use it to your advantage. Don’t think of usin’ your quirk as going into flyin’ mode. Learn to fly on the ground.” He gave her a second to digest all that. If she thought he was done blabbering about the ground, though, she’d be sorely mistaken. “Next, power from the ground. You probably heard a teacher or two say some shit like borrowing power from the ground. That’s a nice way to think about it, and it’s also completely fookin wrong. It’s the other way around. When you do a straight punch,” he demonstrated in slow motion, insisting on the step-in and the moment of impact, “which muscle do you push with the most? The legs. You push against the ground, so that there is a solid base behind your punch, so you’re not the one that gets pushed off by your own attack. That’s the whole idea. You want to push against the ground at the same time as you’re pushing against your opponent when you hit them. That’s what i mean by flying down.” Once again, he demonstrated a straight punch, stopping at the point of impact. “That’s gonna be your first exercise. You should be able to concentrate your quirk in only one part of your body. From that position, you’re gonna wanna push against the bag as you’re pushing down on your back leg with your quirk. Once you can do that shit easy, you move to an actual punch, and you do it at speed. Bam.” He showed her once more, pushing down on his right leg in a shower of blue sparks as his fist rested against the bag. It did not look like much of a push, the sandbag nonetheless swung rather impressively. He did it again at speed, and this time his fist flew like an arrow, or more accurately, like a ballista bolt, despite the sparks once again being located entirely in his leg, crashing into the bag with much more impact this time. “Remember that. Push down, as you punch the sandbag. That’s the first step for any of the stuff I’m teachin’ you. If you can’t do that, you ain’t never going to master mid-air fighting. I know, it’s counter-intuitive, but trust me, I know what I’m doing.” Darren grinned in a way that wanted to be reassuring. He then stepped away from the bag, invited the girl to go at it with a gesture, and crossed his arms to observe her performance with his best judging look.

She already knew that but it was still pretty harsh to hear that she wasn't even a proper sparring partner. This was good motivation though. It was a different thing if someone was mouthing off to her for no reason, but she had nothing to retort back with here. Getting poked by the stick was really stimulating her competitive side in a positive side, even if it did sting a bit. It sounded obvious but she could understand why Darren would emphasize staying on the ground and keeping her flight ability under wraps unless she really needed it. Flying was an amazing advantage and getting it sealed or countered early drastically reduced her options in a fight. She found it amusing hearing an anecdote from the upperclassman's junior high days but it was a painful yet relevant lesson. More than his flight getting sealed, Karen's bigger worry in that situation was not being able to move at all as his footwork was locked down as well. In a normal situation Karen was much more confident staying on the ground while employing her martial arts. Though on her part it was because she was less confident with airborne martial arts in the first place. She watched intently as he gave his demonstration. This was what was missing from her earlier attempt at trying to approach erratically. With feet touching the ground, it was possible to increase the amount of feints one could do. In her mind that 'slowed' her down, but that wasn't what was important if the goal was to confuse and misdirect. There was no need for her to be going at top speed the entire time. And since she could use her quirk to change direction at will then other fighters who would sometimes watch her footwork to try and predict her moves would only end up bamboozled after seeing her step one way but go the other way. It was a great demonstration, though she had to silently disagree at some points. Particularly when Darren mentioned using the ground to help change her direction. But that was probably the fault of him not fully understanding her quirk. The current Karen's inherent physical abilities were nothing compared to the output her quirk had. Her aura will always move her faster than and arguably 'stronger' than if she would physically exert effort herself. Before she could 'kick off' in one direction, her thoughts would have already sent her flying there and back. But this was still a good lesson to keep in mind for when she eventually reached a condition where it did matter. She would apply the parts related to feinting though. That was at least very relevant to her at the moment. The next lesson was pretty much punching 101. She was familiar with this, that a lot of power came from your leg pushing off the ground. What was new was trying to push with her quirk. Now in all honesty her full body aura cloak was a result of years of practice. When she was very little the best she could do was cloak a limb to giver her a little boost and some height. So when Darren mentioned focusing her quirk on just one part of her body, to her this was just a return to the basics. Still it had been a while since she last tried something like this. Lately she had been focused on her full body cloak trying to maximize her mobility and getting used to moving naturally if not instinctively. It should be interesting then to see what her limb focused cloak was like now. "It's been a while since I've done this sort of training senpai. I started with this you see. Just one limb at a time. It was all I could do when I was much younger. But I've since gotten used to just cloaking everything since I wanted to master total control of my flight."She took up position close to the sandbag and focused her cloaking just her leg with her aura as instructed. With her full control, normally she wouldn't even think of pushing with her leg. She would just fly in the direction she needed to go to. But with only her leg cloaked that wasn't going to work. With her feet planted on the ground however, that meant that pushing with her leg actually had meaning. Since she could physically push and push with her quirk at the same time without her quirk getting ahead and leaving behind her physical effort, both could work in tandem together. The result was a little different from Darren's demonstration. With her quirk focused on one area, her shield also formed around her leg which created a trampoline-like effect that repelled her when she focused on pushing off the ground. Her form ended up being a bit awkward as she punched the bag though she easily regained her balance after that. The additional power from a normal was evident but at the same time it was clear that she wasn't used to punching with her quirk like that. "This definitely feels different senpai. There was a little more power than I expected and I didn't think my aura would react that way when pushing it against something. It hardens into a kind of shield when I focus it, which apparently makes me kinda bounce off what it comes in contact with. The ground in this case. I think there's potential there. It's exciting trying something new."Now that she had experienced it once, she could make adjustments should she try again. This was fun.
