WORD COUNT; TAGGED: TAGGED: Fluffy Puppets were now idly walking the streets of the little makeshift town. Their movements baggy and strange, clearly not humanoid. It was, however, the best that they could offer on such a short notice. Everything had been prepared for the upcoming event. Ground Beta had successfully been established. Ground Beta was an enormous 1 by 1 kilometer large square with four entrances/exits. Within this square, a faux city had been created, modelled on popular locations from Tokyo, Musutafu and Osaka primarily. The faux city had four major areas, which sported slightly different building layouts. One area had primarily the rural influence. Houses were slightly larger at the base floor, more traditional in nature, with more spacing and open areas around each building. The buildings also weren't terribly tall, primarily one to three storied. The secondary area was a generic housing area you could find in the middle of the city. Several taller buildings, upwards of twelve stories, lay placed here. The housing was primarily rentable appartments. At the street level, ther were also a series of convenience stores and other shopping needs. The third area was an industrial area, filled with larger than average buildings, pipes and such things. Smoke seemed to rise from many of the silos. The main traffic here seemed to be large trucks. Finally, there was the entertainment area. Clubs, cafés, casinos, bars, bowling alley, laser-tag. Practically everything you'd desire when having a fantastic night out.
Populating these areas, were practically what one could expect. There was traffic, driving casually around the city. Taxis, trucks, pickups. It was clear that these fauxes weren't actual cars, as much as mash of paper on rails, but it looked reasonable enough. There were individuals walking the streets, exchanging good by stands and otherwise trying to appear like normal city-life. Granted, since they were puppets created by a quirk, they were very limited in function, but at least the city felt somewhat populated. It was within this little faux city, that the obstacle part of the competition would take place. Ningyo, being ever impartial, would ensure that neither teams gained an unfair advantage...
Scattered across the city as well, were strangely marked levers, positioned mainly by areas that seemed particularly trafficed. These levers took some time to activate, giving off an indication to the hero team of exactly where the lever was being activated from. Once activated the levers would be generating some kind of disaster. For instance, the lights could all switch to green, causing a massive pileup in the middle of the road. Scaffolding could begin falling down, severely hurting everyone caught underneath. In short, disasters on demand. Disaster levers. The competition would be fairly simple. One team would be pretend-heroes. The other team would be pretend-villains. The hero team would start with two-hundred points. If a villain managed to entirely escape the exercise, the heroes would lose fifty. In addition, each civillian hurt by the activation of a disaster lever, would deduct another five points. Once enough time had passed, or all the points had been deducted, the exercise would then swap the teams, meaning the hero team would become villains and vice versa.
In essence, heroes were meant to capture the villains while securing and ensuring the safety of civillians. The villains were meant to cause as much disaster as possible, while avoiding being caught. To catch a villain, all the hero team would have to do, was touch the villain and apply a captured mark onto their clothes. As such, standing your ground to fight as the villain may not be the smartest solution. From there, it was a judgement call. Would you prioritize escaping..? Would you feel more confident in causing some disasters, sealing away some of your opponent's points that way?... There were many ways to approach this, and it had Ningyo somewhat excited to see what the students may choose. Licking her lips joyously, she awaited the arrival of those that would go fifth.

Here it was, the Sports Festival. It seemed that UA wanted to go a bit off the rails to make these events a real show with Quirks and other some such. It made sense, have the Heroes-in-training partake a mock-up situations that an actual Hero may face out in the real world. Of course, Owen didn't really care about that all too much. No, this boy's focus was entirely on the present, and this being a perfect chance to really show off the sorts of things he could do. He was ready for it, he was certain, absolutely. Whether he was actually just deluded or not remains to be shown.
He woke up bright and early for the day, yet Owen was still nearly late for his own event, having gotten caught up in some warm-up exercises. He had to make sure he was light and spry on his feet. After all, that was his main advantage here, and why he'd chosen to sign up for the obstacle course. He figured he could probably come out victorious on any event, but it'd still be a good idea to sign up for the one he could win the most easily.
Admittedly, he was a bit confused with the setting for the event. Didn't seem much like an 'obstacle course' if you asked him. That could be a bit of a wrinkle in plan to just run faster than everyone else. He could still handle it though, he figured. Sure, he'd have to worry about protecting the faux civilians, but all he had to do to catch the Villains was place some stickers on them? And if he were chosen to be a Villain, all he had to do was hit a few switches and run away. He could do that! Running away might not be in his nature, but he was sure he could manage well enough.
Though almost late, Owen definitely showed up, immediately doing a few more warm-up stretches. He could never be too ready for this! "Alright, alright! When're we gettin' this going? Throw anythin' at me, I can 'andle it!" By the end of his announcement of confidence, he transitioned from stretching to jogging in place.

Jeez, U.A. sure didn’t know the meaning of restraint, did they? The sports festival was already the most extravagant event of its kind that she had ever seen –she was sure some actual sporting events didn’t have as much money behind them—and the events certainly epitomized it. She supposed that it made sense for a school that was the first of its kind and with this large of a budget to want its first sports festival to be impressive in every aspect, but it was hard to feel that some parts weren’t a bit… excessive. Take her event, the Obstacle Course, as an example; whatever she was expecting when she signed up certainly wasn’t what she got. She had specifically picked it because she wasn’t confident enough in her fighting skills to enter the tournament. Then, when it was too late to back out, she found out what, exactly, the obstacle course entailed.
As it turned out, the event was much less “race to the finish line” and much more “heroes vs villains”, which was pretty much the opposite of what she had anticipated when she’d heard about an obstacle course. It also made her significantly more nervous; so nervous, in fact, that she’d nearly thrown up the large meal she’d eaten in anticipation. She’d managed to keep it all down, thankfully, but her stomach was still doing flips even as she made her way to Ground Beta. Noriko grimaced, adjusting the headphones on her head while the music imbued her with artificial confidence. Despite her reservations, it wasn’t like she was going to hold back. Even if… even if she ended up being a villain for this thing, that wasn’t an excuse for her not to give it her all. She had to protect her pride as a U.A. student!
And to make sure she had a chance to protect that pride, she’d made sure to leave early in order to arrive on time. However, nerves ultimately prevented her from entering the moment she got there and she spent a good few minutes pacing outside, psyching herself up. By the time she showed up, she was almost time to start.
And speaking of ready to start, it seemed like someone was raring to go. She recognized the horns from the combat exercise they’d done together. Though they’d been on separate sides, she was confident that she knew enough of what he could do.
“Hey,” was all she said as she lumbered up, stopping a few feet away from him.

Gregory was ready, he was determined as always. He silently strode to his starting position with a neutral look on his face, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t thinking. He had had no clue what the obstacle course would entail, but after discovering the truth he was not deterred. Heroes would be forced to face many situations in the line of duty, and surprise was one of them. Expecting things to be as they seemed at first glance was not a wise mindset to have, and Gregory would not be the kind of man to lose out simply because he was fooled. No, Gregory was ready and raring, even though his body and face did not reflect this. He lined up with the rest of the students silently, judging and eyeing the competition with his usual thousand yard stare. They didn’t seem like much trouble, and they seemed nervous which was a nice advantage to have. While the others prepared themselves, he would gauge their actions, weigh the options, and discover the best way to win. Gregory wouldn’t lose, he couldn’t lose. There was too much on the line. These upstarts would be put in their place and shown that Valiant was the superior school. Gregory's FC:

WORD COUNT; TAGGED: TAGGED: Fluffy Julia had been trying to unwind, literally. The springs that were part of her arms and legs had gotten far too tense with the recent announcements and slew of information. So many things to take care of, so many things to keep in mind, let alone being surrounded by all these Japanese dimwits that couldn't speak a lick of English! Still, with her quirk taken care of and prepared, she was in tip-top condition to show some of these wankers students from the other schools exactly what a hero was like! Arriving onto the scene with a cheerful smile on her lips, she looked around energetically. Due to her quirk, her walking was a little... off. They might've noticed something was up, though her hero costume covered most of the oddities regarding her body. Spotting Gregory doing Gregory things, the girl marched directly over to him. "Oi, Oiiiiiii, earth to Gregory! How can you just sit there without introducing yourself?!" Grabbing hold of his shoulder, the energetic young female dragged him over to Noriko and Owen. So far, everything was going great. So far, she hadn't done anything to upset anyone or cause trouble. So far, all was good, though it wasn't going to last.In a borderline slowmotion movements, as if she was speaking to a pair of monkeys, Julia pointed to herself. Speaking slow and deliberate, she was hoping to be understood by her two peers, even if her way of getting the message across would likely be quite offensive in most eyes. "Me Julia. Ju-Li-A. Julia!" From there, she pointed to Gregory. Making sure that it was clear she was no longer talking about herself. As if they could make the mistake of believing such. "He Gregory. Gre-Go-Ry. Gregory!" Beaming widely, she would've explained to them how their team was going to absolutely steamroll the Japanese squad, but doing such in gestures would likely come across as rude. Being rude most certainly wasn't Julia's intention, so she cautiously stopped herself before insulting the hosts of this competition! Proud of herself, she couldn't even fathom that something might've gone wrong. Yup, this was an absolutely flawless greeting, if she was to say so herself! Looking at Gregory, Julia tilted her head to the side. Gregory wasn't the worst teammate to be paired up with. While the two of them had their issues, mainly caused by personalities being polar opposites, everyone at their school had been hammered with the thought that strength through numbers was the most apparent strength available. Thus, teamwork was the key. Nodding, she could work together with Gregory. Then, afterwards, she could always claim she carried the team to victory!

As the time to actually begin the event grew closer, Owen began to ponder who his partner for this little game would be. Just as soon as the question crossed his mind, it was answered by a somewhat gruff greeting. He found that he had been joined by that rough-'n'-tough looking lizard girl he had ran into during the hotel capture the flag exercise. "Aye! I remember ya!" Leaning over, the antlered boy gave Noriko an unsolicited pat on the shoulder. "Great to see ye again! Let's rock this li'l obstacle course dealy-doo, yeah?" He questioned jovially, letting out a hearty chuckle as he gave her a second pat on the shoulder before removing his hand from her personal space.
By the time the deer boy finished laughing, another had joined them, an odd, grey-haired boy giving him and Noriko quite the look. Big grin plastered on his face, Owen made solid eye contact with him, answering the cold, judgmental glare with a warm, if blank, stare. A long moment of silent was all that was exchanged between the two in that moment. Owen blinked a few times, looking to Noriko then back to the deathly serious boy. Just as he was about to ask if there was something on his face, the group was joined by a fourth, the second member representing the opponent school in this particular event.
The newcomer managed to drag the apparently ill-tempered lad over to introduce themselves to Owen and Noriko, and introduce themselves they did. Well, the clearly more amiable of the two introduced the both of them. She spoke to the UA students like they were completely brainless idiots, but Owen didn't even register that. Whatever that says about the state of his brain or lack thereof, the friendly lad met her apparent friendliness in kind. "Aye, I was wonderin' if yer friend there hadda problem. Guess the lad's just shy, eh?" As he was one to do, Owen just rationalized the negativity of his opponent into simple, innocent timidness.
"Right! Almost forgot to introduce meself, Owen O'Sullivan is me name! Great to meetcha, Jooleeaah an' Grehgooree." He laughed again, repeating the girl's condescending pronunciation of her and her teammate's name right back at them, simply figuring that it was some sort of odd conversation quirk she had.

It wasn’t often that people worked up the bravery to make casual physical contact with her –either too intimidated by her size, or something else put them off, on top of it simply being unusual. So, when her classmate greeted her and reached up to pat on the shoulder, her eyebrows shot up and her eyes widened, both actions hidden behind the impenetrable curtain that was her hair. Unused to such friendly gestures aimed towards her, she nearly shied away from the contact, but managed to hold herself still as the boy with antlers gave some encouraging words. Doing her best to keep her nerves in check, Noriko gave a nod in response and replied, “Yeah. Let’s do our best,” in her typical dull voice. Then Owen had turned his attention somewhere else, and Noriko tilted her head to follow his gaze. Unbeknownst to her (probably not a great sign) another student, this one obviously from one of the other participating schools, had sidled up near them. The student, a boy with wild gray hair, almost seemed to be looking through them, and Noriko had to fight her instinct to shrink into herself under the intense gaze. Why was he looking at them like that? Was he sizing them up? Or was he gawking at them because of their mutations? The only comfort she took was that Owen seemed confused as well, glancing between her and the new arrival with a perplexed look.
A loud voice pierced the silence, though. Another student, a girl this time, marched up to the boy and forced him closer to them. ‘That’s the worst Japanese I’ve heard in a while,’ Noriko thought mildly to herself as the girl went on to introduce herself and her teammate in a very slow, deliberate, loud voice. It really made her wonder if the school they came from bothered to teach the students how to introduce themselves in Japanese, or if they had and this girl --Julia, as she oh-so-eloquently called herself—just hadn’t paid attention. Regardless, she managed to get the point across. She was Julia, and the intense one was Gregory.
“Noriko,” was her brusque reply.

WORD COUNT; TAGGED: TAGGED: Fluffy As the two sides made their appropriate introductions, a short woman approached them all. Placing herself in their center, in such an unassuming way that she wouldn't have been surprised if none of them had noticed her, she cleared her throat to garner their attention. First, Ningyo spoke in a elegant english, making sure their guests were accustomed to what would happen first. If they were having trouble understanding in English, Ningyo was also willing to explain in any of the scandinavian languages, or alternatively German. Afterwards, she would turn her attention to Noriko and Owen. "..Greetings and welcome to Ground Beta. You've received the general rules, but I would like to clarify a few things." As Ningyo was speaking, an unassuming puppet waddled over. His movements seemed to become sharper and sharper the closer he came to Ningyo, and the more her focus on him increased. The puppet bowed before them, as if introducing himself. Naturally, with how many puppets she had created, there wasn't a single way in hell that Ningyo could make the puppet actually speak. "These are my puppets, and they are scattered across the city. They've been imbued with basic tasks, such as crossing the road. However, among the puppets, there are certain ones you should be aware of." Another puppet waddled over, this one dressed in an outfit that was easily spotted in a crowd. A police uniform. At his belt, he had a gun. No, not a real gun. A faux gun. "These are to be understood as the general security of the city out there. These will engage any villainous behavior, additionally informing the heroes of where the villains are currently located. They fire high-velocity paintballs. They'll hurt, sting, and leave colored marks. Naturally, the more you as a villain get shot, the more points you'll lose.
The law-enforcement is the only thing you should reliably engage directly, without utilizing the levers. In this exercise, the puppets are not to be your focus. The other team is. Do your best to harass and capture." Ningyo lifted an arm and scratched her cheek, stretching ever so slightly. Keeping this many puppets active was a draining affair, even if she had the stamina to keep it going for quite an extended amount of time. "Other incidents with the populace may happen as well. Humans are unpredictable, so keep your eyes out. Now, in the four quadrants around us, there is one escape door in each quadrant. These will open after fifteen minutes, allowing the villains to escape." Looking between the two foreign students, Ningyo then continued, explaining what kind of situation they were finding themselves in."The scenario is as following. Two villains have stolen from a jewelry store, utilizing excessive force. Two heroes were in the area, and are responding to the crime. Civillians are caught in the crossfire. Heroes are judged on their response time, their ability to prevent excessive destruction of material, plus their ability to apprehend the criminals.
The criminals are judged on their ability to outwit the heroes, to utilize their surroundings to create timesinks for the heroes, plus their ability to cause general public unrest." Once Ningyo was done explaining in English, she'd turn to Noriko and Owen, repeating the explanation in Japanese so that everyone was on the same page. Lastly, she pointed to her own students. Noriko & Owen, flipping a coin into the air. One side was red with a joker-esque marking. The other seemed like a batman lookalike. Underneath each respective image was a small text. 'Villain - Hero.'"You two start as the villain team. Please pick a quadrant to start outside. Then I'll prepare the two foreign students to be the heroes that will ruin your day."

Owen quickly figured that his partner was a bit short on words, probably the sort that was more interested in doing than talking about it, considering she had greeted him with but a word before proceeding to introduce herself to their opponents with only her first name. At least her statement about doing their best was both optimistic and lasted longer than a handful of syllables. This was perfectly fine in Owen's mind, his mom had always told him that he often did enough talking for two, maybe three people, so he figured that as long as Noriko was physically capable (which she obviously was), they'd make a perfect duo!
Just before he could continue making conversation with their opponents, in fact just as he was opening his mouth to ask where exactly they were from, Owen noticed the short woman who had taken place between the students of the two schools. By the way she started speaking, he could figure she was likely the one running this whole event. He was so intent on listening to her speak that the puppet momentarily startled him, having only noticed it when it bowed in front of them. Once he was over that, Owen managed to quietly listen to the woman finish explaining the event, eventually declaring that him and Noriko would be the Villain team first.
"Villains, huh? So, dun get tagged, pull some levers, get outta there, an' pro'lly kick some cops along the way, right?" Owen recounted their goals as the Villain team, counting them out on his fingers, making sure he had everything straight. He laughed jovially and lightly nudged Noriko with his elbow, signalling that he would be speaking to her with his next batch of words. "It's right weird 'avin' to be the baddies, ain't it? Gonna 'ave to pull out the actin' chops for this'n, aye?" Another bout of laughter. It seemed rare for any moment to pass without there being something chuckle-worthy happening for the antlered boy.
"Right, forreal though. I'll leave the startin' position up to ye. Navigatin' won't be much an issue for me, regardless where we start." Owen was clearly confident in his mutation lending him a huge advantage as far as being able to get around was concerned. If he wasn't so confident, he'd probably pull for whatever area might be most difficult for someone who lacked his agility to navigate, but that would also inconvenience Noriko, so it's not like it would have done too much good for them at the end of the day.

Noriko almost jumped out of her skin at the unexpected noise -though you might not know it, as her reaction really only amounted to freezing in place. Where the heck had she come from? Had she really been so distracted that another human being managed to totally sneak up on them? Note to self, make sure that never happens again, because that was very unpleasant. By the time the woman finished talking to the foreign students in a language that sounded Western and so Noriko could only assume was English, then turned to them and launched into an explanation, the reptilian girl had calmed down enough to listen closely. Putting aside how remarkable the proctor’s Quirk was in terms of both effect and range, the puppets certainly put another layer of strategy in this game. She’d have to think carefully about how she interacted with them. In fact, she'd have to adjust her thinking about how she'd interact with this whole exercise. Their team had two pretty obvious mutation Quirks, to start with. It wasn't a tall order to assume that their opponents could guess what they could do and be at least half-correct. By contrast, Noriko was having a hard time guessing what the other team could do, which put her and O'Sullivan at an inherent disadvantage. The news that they team would be playing the villains was... well, it was bit disappointing, if she was honest. She was trying to be a hero, after all. But, she'd still try to do her best! In any case, it was up to her to pick where they wanted to start. Being as big as she was, she probably wouldn't do too well in the more cramped spaces, but as a villain she was a massive target for the "law enforcement", even moreso in open ground. She needed large spaces with enough cover to hide behind where her color wouldn't give her away instantly. Craning her neck, Noriko took a moment before finally extending a long, clawed hand and pointed towards the third area. "There." "Come on Julia..." He gave her his usual look. While he didn't intend any ill will towards her, something Julia should be used to by now, he assumed that his opponents would take it as a cruel gesture. Gregory wasn't really cruel or evil, he just looked that way. He admitted he kinda looked that way too, but that was just how it was. The only thing he cared about was winning, and the other team putting up a good fight. If they didn't present a challenge he wouldn't learn anything from the experience, or truly test his powers in a good environment.
"Now's when you talk Julia." He gave her the closest thing he could muster to a positive affirmation, with the coldness still deeply ingrained in his voice. He didn't want to plan or plot within earshot of them. "Have you come up with a plan?" He was relying on her for this since she had always been the brains of their class. Gregory wasn't stupid, he knew when to best use his allies to his advantage. "I can freeze them. Not much running they can do if they can barely walk." It was usually his go to. Freeze his opponents to the core and watch them shiver from both fear and ice.

WORD COUNT; TAGGED: TAGGED: Fluffy Confidence was brimming from the young female, as she looked at Gregory, the two of them attempting a plan. "They're picking the industrial area, so we gotta be ready for that!" The girl wasn't an overly tactical mind. In fact, Julia's concepts mostly dealt in approaching the problems head on, beating them down as they arose. Step by step, bit by bit. Besides, these two opponents looked weak, so they wouldn't have anything significant to fear from them. Looks could never deceive, Gregory and Julia were superior! "As for a plan.. I figured we could just take them out, right?.. They're villains, we're heroes! The good guys always win!" Smiling from ear to ear, Julia looked at Gregory. There wasn't much which could be said, honestly. The girl was an honest type. Anything beyond an honest beatdown wasn't in the cards. If Gregory wanted any plan beyond this, he'd have to take charge of getting it through to Julia. The girl could be a little dense once she had an idea locked in her head...
Noriko and Owen arrived in the industrial area. It was, precisely as it had been described. Huge buildings, a waterfront, a sewer system. Each of the three sub areas, would have levers they could pull. Down in the sewers, they'd be clogging the whole thing, essentially making the pipelines overload and eventually explode unless it was dealt with. On the top level, they had the option to pull a lever which would start an enormous crane. It had a wrecking ball attached, that'd tear enormous holes in buildings it'd impact. Finally, they had the option of taking to the rooftops of the industrial area. Here, they'd be significantly more difficult to catch, but the reward for the disaster levers was also significantly smaller. These levers would simply initiate a minor bomb in some of the offices at the top floors of the buildings they picked. Something that would do minor damage and was relatively easy to disarm. On the flipside, it was also the disaster levers with the least risk to activate...
So, as two aspiring villains, Noriko and Owen had a choice to make. Would they go for the risky lever in the sewers, where they'd have limited routes of escape and higher chances of being caught, yet the chaos they could cause would be huge?... Would they pick the inbetween road, starting up the demolition crane, balancing risk and points equally?... Or would they attempt the safest route, but have to sacrifice points doing so?...
They had to choose their strategy.
