Dreams breathe life into men. The stars... I'll reach them.
He really had convinced Ryuusei into doing this again, hadn't he? I don't know why I get so easily influnced by him, the sixteen year old kept thinking to himself as he sat down, having been waiting for Darren for about ten minutes now. Maybe it was a natural ability or charm, but Daimon Darren really had a talent for making Ryuusei Igarashi do things that he really didn't want to. This time, it was a rematch of their only serious sparring match back at the Semper Fi Military Camp. Ryuusei had been in the mood of chilling for a bit, practicing only by himself at the dojo that Rin had gifted him a membership to or with his own father at their own private dojo back at their property that wasn't very far from Yuuei. Hell, Ryuu didn't even signed-up for any of the Battle Tournaments for that exact reason - that and because that, in his mind, fighting for the world to watch was just a glorified version of the slaves that fought for their lives in Ancient Rome. However, there he was: equipped with Yuuei's training outfit, his knife in hand and in a replica of the actual stage in which the participants of the tournament would battle. Flipping his knife in the air, grabbing it and throwing it back up again, the blond long-ish haired boy from Class 1-A really wasn't in the mood to fight. I already said yes and I'm here, so there isn't any turning back, he reminded his pessimistic self. He was already at 100% after the complicated surgery on his abdominal area that saved his life - and that nobody knew about - but this was going to be his first time sparring seriously, so there was doubt and even slight cocnern on his brain... ... but of course he didn't tell none of that to Darren: Ryuusei wasn't looking for any pity or softer version of his friend. And so the cat awaited for the arrival of the tiger. Notes: Back at it again!Words: 341.Tags: Daimon Darren

Darren always had a knack for getting people to follow him. Ever since kindergarten, where he was the one coming up with new games and leading fellow kids into trouble, all the way to his delinquent days in middle school and junior high. Ability certainly played a part, as delinquents only followed those they considered stronger, but there was definitely something else. A silver tongue. A larger-than-life personality. A toxic charm.
Darren himself was only half-aware of it. He did realize that people followed him easily, but he always thought that was just because they were smart and they saw the benefits of getting on his good side. He had a bit of an ego problem.
Whatever it was that charmed people such, it still worked at UA, and it worked on Igarashi Ryuusei. The boy found himself in the middle of the training field, half-coerced, half here of his own will after the blonde delinquent harassed him for a rematch in preparation for the upcoming tournament. Darren found him playing with a knife. His self-preservation instincts flared up. It always happened whenever he fought Ryuusei. He really did not give off the air of a dragon; rather that of a snake, or perhaps an alley cat to Darren’s tiger.
He did not look strong, in fact, everything rational told Darren he should win this… But his sharpened instincts nagged him about something else. Not fear, he wouldn’t admit to that in a million years anyway, but… Concern, perhaps? Apprehension? He shook his head. All he had to do was fight his usual fight. Both hands in front, a solid guard, parry the knife and counter. Easy enough. Right?
“Yo lazy striker, ready for that shit?” he called out as a greeting. His demeanor was casual, his tone even more so, but his eyes were already those of a wild beast looking at danger. He pulled up his guard, both fists in front and elbows tucked in, weight evenly distributed between both feet. The movement was natural, effortless, second nature to the veteran brawler now; while beginners worried about every detail of their posture, the angle of their elbow or keeping their chin tucked in, Darren took a relaxed stance without having to think about it. He had no doubts that Ryuusei had gotten better since Semper Fi and that, as usual, he was hiding his game; but on the contrary, Darren wore his skill as a badge of pride, declaring his strength with every move.
“Whenever you want, buddy.” He grinned. “Don’t hold back on me, I’ll kick your ass,” he declared, a moot threat. Of all people, Ryuusei knew firsthand what would happen to his ass if he held back, yet the delinquent felt more friendly shit-talking was in order. “Hope you ain’t believe ducking out of the tournament meant you was gonna duck out on me.”
Whatever it was that drew Ryuusei to Darren, Darren knew what drew him to Ryuusei; like a tiger, he could smell the danger, and danger meant a good fight.

You don't need a dream or even a tomorrow Just live
A casual yet almost brash voice was heard coming from the distance. By the sound of it and the words that were spoken, it could only mean one thing: Daimon Darren had arrived. Ryuusei threw the practice knife in the air one last time, grabbing it with his favorite hand - the left one - as he shifted his body in his friend's direction. You just jump right into it, don't you? Ryuu asked rhetorically as his eyes laid upon Darren, who was now only a few meters away. The 1-C student immediately took on his own combat stance. Even if noticeably relaxed, Darren wore his traditional background and style on his sleeve: fists around the chin height, elbows pointed inwards, feet well set on the ground... Just like a boxer who already had a great deal of fighting experience. Ryuusei stance contrasted with Darren's like night an day: hands down, knees slightly bent and parallel to each other. Like a cat who was ready to jump, but whose direction was almost impossible to predict. Even if I don't hold back you'll still win, so this is kinda pointless, he called out Darren's words, zero emotion on his voice. That was the truth in Ryuu's mind, which made him wonder on why Darren insisted on sparring with him. The boy focused on a more striking and guns blazing approach, but the last match also proved to Ryuusei that the founder of the Martial Arts Club had a deep understanding of the grappling game. In raw strenght, Darren won; strinking wise, Ryuu specialized in managing distance and counter's, something that Darren's superior experience could handle just fine; in grappling, Ryuusei was a specialist, but it was clear that Darren's fighting background allowed him to deal with the rare tough position that Ryuu could be able to put him in. It was probably this that lit a small fire under Ryuusei, an actual desire to, quite simply, beat Darren's ass (or try to). "Holding back"? What the hell did he meant? If someone was going to hold back it would be Darren - just like he probably did in their last spar. If he didn't do that the fight would've ended in a blink of an eye. That or Ryuusei really underestimated his own abilities and skills way more than what he should. Whatever the case... You really want me to go first? he sighed. And then, out of nowhere and in an instant, he began sprinting against Darren. My best chance is on the ground, trying to outstrike him is stupid. A simple plan. Especially since taking into account that, due to his injury, the last months had been spent on just jiu-jitsu, rolling on the mat everyday with his father - who, by the way, was a literal mountain at 2 meters tall and almost 120kg of pure muscle. Grappling with someone stronger would be nothing new in terms of feeling. That gave Ryuusei some confidence in taking the fight there... that was, of course, if he was able to do it. Once he was close, he started a movement with his left arm that indicated that he was going to try and strike Darren in the face with the knife. It was nothing more than a feint, hoping to get the rival's attention and reaction. In the middle of this movement, Ryuusei would use his agility to chance levels and the attack Darren's lead leg: Ryuu was going for the legendary Imanari Roll, taking advantage of Darren's initial boxing stance that isn't the strongest to defend grappling moves in an MMA scenario. Right hand getting a hold of the leg while he was dropping. Transition to a back roll in Darren's direction. Left arm and right leg around Darren's lead leg. Left leg on Darren's hip in order to transition for the inside of his legs after the fall. If the Imanari Roll was successful, both Ryuusei and Darren would be on the floor, with Ryuu having a triangle on Darren's leg, locking it in order to pursue a knee bar. If Darren was able to slip his leg out before allowing Ryuusei to force him onto the ground or if he was simple able to read Ryuusei's move and step out of the way before the 1-A Vice-President was even able to touch his lead leg, Ryuusei would just keep the momentum of the Roll to get back on his feet and face Darren's direction. A calm head and quick thinking to asses feints, the eyesight and the hand speed to back it up with a parry he got from boxing. He didn’t tell anyone yet at school, but he had recently got a professional license, and his gym was in the process of finalizing the latest arrangements for a debut fight, to which he would invite his friends, of course. He flicked up his left to react to the attack that never came. No need to overcommit. Keep your head straight. Don't blink. The words from coach Fujikawa were engraved in his brain, now. Ryuusei disappeared to his left to wrap himself around his leg like a snake, the Imanari roll, a move very well-suited to his style. The knowledge of this sly takedown which immediately transitioned into a powerful heel lock he got from judo, as well as the skill to react in time. First, he bent down on his right knee to lower his center of gravity, going with the fall instead of against it to gain a little time. It allowed him to think of his next action; control the opponent. Virtually all foot locks required both hands to be executed, so as he fell down, he made sure to grab Ryuusei’s forearm and pull it to him. If he wanted to get grabby, then Darren would too. From there he could defend the submission, but all shield and no sword was a pointless way to fight. That idea he got from kung fu. He found all the animal hands crap stupid at first until he stumbled upon a series of uTube videos explaining zoology through video game mechanics. The videos were great, but a line about how eagles dropped turtles from heights made something click in his head. Defense without a way to keep your enemy at bay just invited harassment; you had to bite back. Darren was not a grappler, as his quirk favored a high-flying, constantly moving style of striking, but that didn’t mean he had to be helpless on the ground. With his other hand, he attempted to open his opponent’s legs up enough to reverse into a mounting position with his strength and martial arts acumen. It was not an ideal position and Ryuusei would probably be able to control him with his legs, but it didn’t matter; all he had to show is that he could bite back. So from there, he would start ground and pounding, on a solid guard if he had to. The point wasn’t so much to inflict damage as to make a statement. Darren wasn’t one of these fighters who could rely on the destructive or defensive power their quirk, he had to work extensively on every other aspect of his skills, eventually developing this hybrid, versatile style he prided himself upon, what he only half-jokingly referred to as Daimon-style Anything Goes Martial Arts. The fact that Ryuusei was the same with his invisibility quirk earned him the delinquent’s respect, respect that the alley cat had grabbed for himself by forcing the tiger down. But the latter had his pride as the king of the jungle. If the cat wanted to throw down, then he better be prepared to throw down with a wild tiger. Nonetheless, the blondie couldn’t chase this slithery feeling in the back of his mind. Was it a good idea to take the fight where Ryuusei wanted it? Was he preparing to spring a trap on him, like Rin in the capture-the-flag exercise? Doubt crept up his mind as his fists crashed down on Ryuusei again and again, should he have gotten his mount. If Ryuusei disengaged, then he would simply roll to his feet and stare him down again, with a much cockier smile, however.

You don't need a dream or even a tomorrow Just live
Of course it wasn't going to be easy, but easy wasn't what Ryuusei expected from Daimon Darren: just because the 1-A student knew that the ground was his best shot at victory it did not mean that he thought Darren to be an amateur in that part of the game. Darren started by defending the Imanari Roll well: it was obvious that he knew the move, otherwise he wouldn't have the compusure to react to it immediately. He lowered his center of gravity and grabbed Ryuusei's left forearm - the arm with which Ryuu was holding the knife - to himself, pushing the boy to his direction and not allowing him to get a hold of Darren's ankle (preventing the heel hook) or twisting his knee (preventing the knee bar). They were now in a sitting position. Ryuusei had both his legs wrapped around Darren's bent left leg and his right arm free to move in case Darren tried to strike from that position. Ryuu didn't even bother to waste energy to try and free his left arm, since he knew that such would be extremely difficult due to the difference in strenght between him and his opponent. Now it was a matter of who moved first - that person was Darren. Ryuusei saw the blonde deliquent arm move to where Ryuu's legs were, most likely trying to unhook the feet in order to free his leg. That couldn't do. To counter this movement, Ryuusei laid down on his back and straighten his legs, which made it more difficult for Darren to grab his feet due to how far he had to reach back now. This, however, had a consequence: Ryuu had avoided being full-mouted, but he was now in half-guard, with Darren postured up and ready to throw bombs at him after releasing Ryuu's forearm. Jiu-jitsu was a game of paths: the one best at seeing and recognizing these paths achieves victory, the one who is two steps ahead will have won 90% of the fight. Ryuusei was hoping that, in the ground, he was the better man at understanding those paths - something that, on the feet, he was sure to be dominated by Darren. But the tiger was prideful and wanted to show his qualities at every moment, at every position. The cat just needed to survive, waiting for the right moment to move. Ryuu allowed Darren to punch him for some time, protecting his head the best he could with his arms. Some shots got through, obviously, and it hurt like hell. His nose started to bleed. Even if Darren wasn't throwing at full power, the strenght was unavoidable. Didn't matter, Ryuusei just need to wait a little more - only when Darren was feeling 100% confident would he move. After some more five or six shots, Ryuusei made his move. He took advantage of Darren's first mistake: not trying to remove the knife while holding Ryuu's forearm earlier. Timing his move to when Darren was loading a left punch, Ryuu simply threw the knife at Darren's head. Despite the short distance, he was expecting him to dodge it. But that was merely a distraction to hide Ryuusei's true intention: getting an underhook with his right arm on Darren's left one and grabbing Darren's free right tight with the left arm. This was the setup for one of Ryuusei's unconventional Maneki Neko style of Jiu-Jitsu moves: the Electric Chair. If the distraction was succesful and he was able to achieve the setup, Ryuusei would rotate to the right while bringing Darren's right leg to his left shoulder. If he got this position, Ryuusei would be at the final stage of the Electric Chair, where he needed to connect his hands and extend his own body by pushing his torso up and extending his hooked legs. If he was able to do this, he would be basically forcing Darren to do a full split, forcing his legs to reach a point where tapping would be a real possibility. Of course there were many ways of escaping the different passes of the move and of even getting out of the final position: using raw strenght to reach Ryuu’s hands and pull them apart or, somehow, being able to free the bottom leg from the hooks were just two of them. Even if Darren couldn’t figure a way to escape right away he could just have enough flexibility to where the Electric Chair simply didn't hurt enough to make him tap. Either way, it was a cool move and Ryuu just wanted to try it out even if it ended up not working. Hopefully it was something Darren wasn’t used to see.
