"Jack-kun... likes me?" The words sounded unreal to even her, a dream that'd she soon wake up from. Hell, the whole day felt like a weird fever trip- a guy comes into the chatroom raining on everyone's parade and then Jack drops a bomb equivalent to a nuke to the girl. The white-haired boy had feelings for her, and it wasn't the platonic feelings like she had hoped. Now, it had her doubting their entire, but brief, friendship. Was he just being nice because he thought she was pretty? How long had he liked her to begin with?
With questions racing through her head and a sad and confused frown growing on her face, Hye-Rin did the one thing she always resorted to when she felt an excess of any one emotion- she cried. Tears would hit the now black screen that was held in between the legs that sat crossed on her bed, and she'd bring a hand up to wipe her cheeks. It's not that being with Jack in any sort of a romantic way made her feel so overwhelmed that she was put into tears, but the short girl really had come to consider him a dear friend. They hadn't known each other long, that was true, but there was always something so comforting but different about him- a fire inside of him that made the Korean want to stop by and warm herself.
Knowing what she does now, Hye-Rin couldn't stop thinking that their friendship was over.
There was a sudden knock on her door, which sent a jolt through the girl that had spent the last thirty seconds sobbing on her bed. Leaving her now wet phone on her bed and springing up, Hye-Rin would wipe her eyes and face clear of any sign of tears before opening the door.
To her disbelief, it was her friend, Arisu, that lived a couple floors down from her. Her red and puffy eyes would widen, as she'd forgotten that part of crying, and put on a frail smile,"Arisu-chan? What are you doing here?"

The abrupt, rice-less sign off had been a very powerful clue that something was wrong. More than a mere embarrassment worth pretending to have rice to get out of the cooker, but something big enough to halt Hye-Rin in her tracks and demand she evacuate immediately. Arisu wasn't sure what it was, but she knew it was worth walking up a couple flights of stairs and risking some momentary embarrassment to be sure that her friend was alright.
In moments, she was knocking on the Korean girl's door, and the moment it opened and revealed the young girl with red eyes and that spun-sugar smile, Arisu put her hands on the girl's shoulders and pushed. Gently. Easing her out of the way so she could close the door and put her back to it. She wanted privacy for her friend, not to invade her space any more than necessary, and now that she was in, hands were firmly tangled behind her back.
She started with a deep breath. It helped her lift herself up and make a slightly more commanding figure. "I'm here to make sure you're alright. You don't leave like that. You never do. You yell about something you gotta do or make up a story about rice. You just said you had to go. You might as well have yelled "help me something happened." So..." Arisu rolled her shoulders awkwardly. "So I came to help. What is it? Is your family okay? Did you get a bad grade back or something? Can I help? If you have some rice ready, I could probably look up the instructions for gimbap..? It'd be roughly kindergarten level gimbap, but maybe it'd help you feel better?"
Arisu's 'okay you can stop now' switch wasn't in good repair, and it wasn't until that full cascade of offers came from her mouth that it jostled into 'okay you can stop now' position. She watched Hye-Rin nervously, hoping she hadn't bothered the girl coming to try to assist.

Though her friend's hands landing on her shoulders was meant to bring comfort, Hye-Rin couldn't help but flinch just before. Old habits die hard, and though her mind knew that Arisu wasn't there to hurt her in any way... It would take a long time for her to trust people completely again, and it would take her body even longer to grow out of it's old routines of numbing limbs to shield the beatings.
The Korean's friend would shut the door behind them, turning to face her after with a tender look on her face. Each time Arisu had climbed the tower up to the princesses solitary room on the fifth floor, her spirits were always high and she'd joke without a care. Yet, as she looked at the same girl now, a much more supportive and refreshing Arisu looked back. As Hye-Rin listened to her friend's attempt to lift her spirits, the forced smile that had curved her lips so falsely had begun to droop down to reveal her true feelings. Her lip was quivering at the end of the blackette's words, and she had melted into a puddle of emotions.
Letting the dam loose, tears streamed down her cheeks,"Arisu-chaaaaaan~!" Practically wailing out her friend's name a tad too melodramatically, the Korean would lift her arms to wrap them around her friend in an embrace. It didn't last long for her to break away, holding onto Arisu's upper arms with a small and gentle grasp,"Jack-kun said he liked me a-and now every-everything is going to be awkward!" She looked quite foolish right now- her mouth warped into a childish-looking pout while flowers began to sprout where her tears hit. The moisture beckoned them out like it was lunch time, and the Korean didn't even realize how silly she must have looked,"A-And he asked if I liked Saito-kun in the same way! I-I said no!" Hye-Rin would bring a hand to her face to wipe away the tears, barely paying the flowers any mind as she rubbed fairly aggressively. Some petals would fall to the ground, but she didn't notice. They were, after all, constantly on her face,"And I-I said if it made him uncomfortable that I'd stop talk-talking to Saito-kun as much because I didn't want to hurt his feelings but I like spending time with Saito-kun!" She'd take a short pause to sniff all of the snot, and there was a lot, back into her nose. It had built up throughout the day because of her cold, and she had to now resort to breathing through her mouth,"I don't know what to do! He logged off before I could say anything to him. But, what could I say?!"
After that was all out of her system, she'd take the remaining hand off of Arisu's arm. It fell to her side, along with the other one, and she wilted like a flower without sunlight.

Arisu blinked as Hye-Rin threw herself forward and wrapped her in a melodramatic hug complete with panicked wail. She wasn't so startled that she couldn't bring her arms up to hug back- it was a nice hug, Arisu had a pretty sporty build and it lent itself to a nicely firm squeeze in return. As the other girl stepped back, Arisu's hands lifted to rest on Hye-Rin's while she frowned and tried to follow her worries.
"Awkward? Why? Because you don't feel the same way about him?" The Korean kept on going, and Arisu frowned faintly when she said she'd agreed to stop talking to Saito so much. "Okay, that's- not alright. You don't modulate your friendships just because someone with a crush on you got jealous. Whoever you're with should support your friendships, not shut you off from them. That's super not okay. Don't offer to do that anymore, okay? Even if you -are- dating somebody? Your friends are precious, and anyone who insists they're worth losing your friends, isn't worth it, and isn't your friend."
When Hye-Rin pulled her last hand back, Arisu shifted her own to trail it. "Well, before you think about what to say, you need to figure out how you feel. That'll sorta inform everything else, right?" She tugged, leading Hye over to her bed and coaxing the girl to sit, hand firm around the limp little flower of the sad student. It'd be easy to tug it back if she wanted, but the support was there if it was helping. "Do you like Jack back? Do you not? Do you want to still be friends knowing he thinks about you like that? Are you gonna be okay with frustrating him? Do you know that you don't owe him anything, just because he took a liking to you?" She paused and grimaced. "That's... a lot. But let's try to sort through each one. They're all important questions. And once you answer them, I think you'll start seeing how to reply. The situation should be dictated by your feelings- it shouldn't dictate them itself."
Arisu didn't sit on the bed herself. She stayed standing. She thought Hye-Rin might appreciate a sort of symbol of strength when she felt so helpless, and she figured keeping on her feet might leave Hye-Rin feeling a little less on the spot while they worked through her feelings.

Hye-Rin nodded solemnly to Arisu scolding her, looking back now at how badly she treated herself so that Jack could be lifted up instead. It was something she'd done often in all sorts of areas of her life, but she had never done the same for herself. Though she hid it well behind a cheery demeanor and bright smile, Hye-Rin had never thought highly of herself. So, when Arisu had come up so selflessly to make sure she was alright, her heart swelled in her chest.
Saito-kun was dear to her. And Arisu telling her that it was wrong for her to even think of throwing away something she cherished so that Jack wouldn't be jealous made her happy. No, it was more than that. A smile would creep onto her face as she wiped away more tears, perking up just a bit with the last of her many nods.
Being guided back to her bed, her friend sat her down and asked her a bombardment of questions. Most of which, she didn't know the answer to. Shifting to sit cross-legged on her bed, Hye-Rin tried her best to sift through the thoughts in her head to find answers,"I don't think I like Jack-kun back, but I haven't really had many crushes on boys in the past, so I wouldn't really know..." She'd pat a vacant spot on her bed littered with plush toys for Arisu to sit next to her, not wanting an anchor in that moment but an equal,"But... I've watched a lot K-Dramas! And when I watch the romantic scenes, my heart doesn't flutter in the same way when I see Jack-kun." Nodding confidently at this strange but Hye-Rin answer, she'd continue,"I do want to be his friend, and I want to think that I can let him down easy but..." Instead of a bitter frown, her mouth had turned into a perplexed pout as she thought more about the words that came out. Her amber eyes were still quite glossy from the onslaught of tears, but just being with a friend in her time of need helped greatly,"I don't want him to hate me. And he always says that he trusts me in the chatroom, so it feels like I should owe him something. I don't know, Arisu-chan." She'd grab the nearest plush toy to her- a white bunny with a cute face that was half her size- and clutched it tightly to her chest. It was just the right size that her eyes could gaze over it's soft head at her friend.
Though, doing so made Arisu look a bit lonely, and she'd grab the next closest stuffed animal- a similarly-sized brown bear with a yellow bow-tie- and handed it to the blackette.

"Okay, so let's start unpacking there," said Arisu as Hye-Rin dove into the dossier of questions she'd laid out all at once. She listened intently, taking the bear when offered and sitting down at last, examining the adorable ursine before hooking her head over its chin to watch Hye and think through the answers she was given. As the Korean girl finished, the Japanese girl nodded sagely and spoke again, every word jostling the teddy's head as if he was delivering this speech instead of her, thanks to her chin on top of his head. "So. We know you don't want to date Jack-kun, which means the ultimate next step is already decided- you tell him so. How you tell him is what the rest of our questions lays out. You do want to stay friends. You're willing to be friends even if it's a disappointment to him, which is good- because that's on him, not you. If he's smart, he'll value the smart, loyal, peppy friend you are instead of the dream version of you he wants to date- and let's be honest, if he wants to date you when you don't want to date him, he's either delusional or something scarier. I don't think we'll see that happening. He's more likely to decide to try to win your affection, which is fair, but not something you will ever, ever owe him, no matter how long he tries, okay? Your heart is a gift, not a purchase, and he can't buy it with money, time, or effort. Anyone who tells you otherwise is doing you a favor- they're telling you to run the other way as fast as you can, and you should do just that."
The bear was made to lean forward and pat Hye-Rin on the knee with a soft paw. "He won't hate you. He'll be sad. He might hate himself. When you let him down, just- emphasize that it wouldn't have mattered if he'd waited to tell you. If you'd have accepted his affection later if he'd just kept being your friend, you'll still accept it at that point if he stays your friend- and if you were never going to feel that way, then it didn't matter when he told you. It wasn't a mistake to share his feelings- that's what you should make sure he knows. Then he has nothing to feel bad about besides maybe disappointment that he doesn't get to date you as soon as he hoped. Which again, he doesn't necessarily get to do, even if he does everything right."
Arisu huffed a little, looking down and making the bear wipe his forehead like she kinda wanted to do herself. "Does all that make sense, Hye-Rin? I don't want you to let anyone take advantage of you, or let someone hurt you just because they want something you don't want to give them."

The bunny, as too much of her face was covered, would nod often in response to Arisu's lengthy answer to show she was listening. It became obvious that there was much that Hye-Rin had to learn when it came to love, and even more so to friendship. Sheltered was a good way to describe her, and the curiosity in the world outside the shiny walls of her bubble always made her wonder about the 'what-ifs'. What if her destiny was around the corner? What if her soulmate was just a few feet away and she was too naive to believe it so? At the end of her lengthy monologue, she'd ask the Korean if all of it made sense. Which, she'd get a cheerful nod to,"Wah... Arisu-chan is so wise!" Hye-Rin would bring the bunny's arms up to it's cheeks to make it look in awe at it's bear brother.
Leaning forward towards Arisu, Hye-Rin would let the bunny's head fall a bit while her own looked at her friend in wonder,"You must have had a lot of encounters like this before, Arisu-chan! How else would you know so much?" The same blissful smile would appear on her face as it always did, now dug out of the hole she had dug herself thanks to the blackette. Truthfully, she hadn't had a close girl friend before- one she could pour her heart out to. They were all quite simple-minded like herself, though she never thought so, and Arisu looked incredibly intelligent to her in that moment. To think that they were the same age and she already knew so much about life and it's troubles!
Hye-Rin would lean back, the bunny now blocking the majority of her body once more,"Okay... I'll tell him all of this the next time I see him!" The arm of her furry friend would be brought up to salute, and she's giggle to herself,"Well, if we're in private, of course!" Scooting closer to Arisu, bringing the bunny's arm up once more to place it next to it's mouth as if it was cupping it's hand over it to whisper a secret. Though, in order to be heard, the Korean had to lift her head to rest her chin on the top of it's soft head,"I know I said I haven't had many crushes, but I really like anime and K-Dramas, so I have crushes on characters instead! And I know that Jack-kun isn't my type!" Along with the flower buds that still dotted along her tear-stained cheeks, rose buds began to sprout across her cheeks as a blush joined them,"I like when they're tall and mysterious. But, on top of that, they're snarky and always shield their feelings with humor! So, the protagonist has to keep trying to get to know them and break through their shell! And sometimes she fails, but that's all part of their love story!" She was describing boys in the shows she watched too much of, but it all sounded like someone much too familiar...
"Someone like that...", Looking off through the window of her room dreamily, her smile would turn into a melted mess of emotions as she held the bunny closer to her chest. Her heart beat against it's back, and she breathed out a love-sick sigh.
"...Is like a prince to me."

--- arisu --- - - -
Arisu burst into laughter when the rabbit started miming the responses, hopefully leaving the mood lighter than it had begun, for all that it had been stuffy infused from the start. "Wise? Ah- no, my mom's just- been really careful. She didn't want me to make her mistakes. Her parents were super strict and never let her around boys like- at all. So she... found ways to find boys, and that led to all sorts of heartache over the years. So she got good at avoiding it, and understanding what she was worth. She's with my dad because he understood too, and- well, she always told me one of the most attractive things in the world is a man who treasures how much you treasure yourself- and not one who treasures YOU over how much you treasure yourself. Those are two very different things. One cares that you love yourself. The other just cares that you love them. The latter might feel nice, but it's- not healthy. It's like a tree with a fungus. Sure, the fungus is healthy and thrives, but the tree... withers, no matter how much the fungus appreciates that the tree is feeding it. That's not enough."
"E-eh?! Encounters?! No! No. I don't- no. I've never even been on a date. I just listen when my mom talks, ahahaha," Arisu admitted, deflecting that assumption and executing it immediately. "And that's a good idea, but be very careful how you get him alone. You don't want him thinking you're going to accept his affections only to smoosh him down, gently or not."
The next bit Hye-Rin had Arisu worried. She was... relatively sure that whatever was spawning that lovesick sigh was gonna squash whatever she said, but she had to at least try, right? "Ah- just remember what I said about treasure, Hye-Rin? You deserve someone who treasures how much you treasure yourself. Princes... aren't super great with treasure."

The smile that spread across her face when Arisu-chan spoke of her mother was genuine, but it also held some sadness behind it. The only motherly figure that had been in the girl's life had been from a time she'd rather not remember, but not having one had taken it's toll on the girl. There was no one in her life to teach her all the things a mother should, and had to stumble through life with far too much trial and error. Her father had raised her well enough, but there were so many life lessons she had to struggle through herself.
Having Arisu appear in her life was a little late, but worth the wait.
Hye-Rin nodded,"I'll be careful! It's not like my prince exists anywhere but my mind, anyway." She'd smile and laugh awkwardly at herself, the bunny scratching the back of it's head as she wanted to. Even when it came time for her to find her 'prince charming', she was going to have her heart saved just for that moment. No premature infatuation with anyone else! The Korean was going to save her gentle and sweet first love for him! They'd go to karaoke together and belt out ballads without a care as to who heard their love. They'd cook together, enjoying her traditional Korean cooking-
An idea came to her mind suddenly, and her eyes lit up,"You mentioned gimbap before, right?" The bunny would be placed at it's original seat on her council of plush toys, bouncing out of bed with newfound energy. The defeated girl that had opened the door for Arisu was no more, replaced with the bubbly and familiar Hye-Rin from the chatroom. Practically skipping to her small container of pantry groceries, she'd grab the white rice that sat on top and the dried seaweed sheets to show Arisu.
Holding the key ingredients in her arms, she'd nod up towards the short, two shelved bookshelf just beside her bed,"I'm going to teach you how to make it! Grab that portable stove from the shelf there and let's get cooking!"

"Okay! Good. I'm not saying it's not like you can't fall in love or anything- heck, half the girls in these dorms are dating each other, from what I can put together," Arisu mused distractedly, clearly a little puzzled over that turn of events, "But it's important to know you're valuable, you matter, that your happiness is something worth. Protecting. Investing in. If you treat your happiness as unimportant, everyone else will, too, and it won't take long before you have no happiness to mistreat anymore."
"Gimbap! Yeah! I thought maybe a homemade snack would lift your spirits. You wanna make some?" She hopped up excitedly as Hye-Rin seemed to make a full recovery and moved with her back to the pantry with her friend, moving to get the stove as directed and bring it down, finding a likely spot with a plug to get it set up! "I don't really know what it is beyond "korean sushi" sorta so you gotta teach me what makes gimbap gimbap, okay? And don't worry- I've had kimchi before, so if it's involved, you're not gonna scare me off with spicy sauerkraut!"
