"Fujioka-san, hello. It's nice to meet you. I am Shimizu Haruto, the class vice president- But please, just call me Haruto." Haruto extended a hand to his new classmate. He didn't know her full story- Just that she was from abroad, and was not as familiar with the Japanese language as the school's other foreigners were. Hence why Tsutsuji-sensei had reached out to Haruto, requesting that the boy help her acclimatize to her new school. Naturally, Haruto would not refuse.
Well, some things happened, and when the two actually met, it was not until the day of the school sports festival. Despite knowing in advance, Haruto still had to do his best not to stare. After all, she was one of the more significantly altered among the mutation-type quirks he had met. If he hadn't known in advance, he wouldn't have known if the other was a boy or a girl! While the boy wasn't the type to judge based on that, and was thoroughly accustomed to such mutations- His homeroom teacher was Tsutsuji-sensei after all, who was no less altered than Charlotte. The feeling with which he watched her was more of curiosity than anything. However, not wanting to seem rude on first impression, Haruto did his best to not stare.
"So, how are you fitting in so far? Made any friends?" The white-haired boy started off with some small talk. "You know, especially our class, has gotten a lot of new students lately. So, don't be too intimidated about having just transferred in- Almost everyone else is in that same boat with you. And if you have any problems, you can always come to Chise or myself for help, alright?"
Speaking of Chise, it wasn't that Haruto had ditched her to meet Charlie! Not at all! The reason that Haruto was exploring the festival with a girl who was not his girlfriend was that Chise was running the cooking club's food stall right now. Ideally, he would have been paired with her- Well, as club president, he couldn't just set things up based on his own selfish whims, so that was a no go. Besides,he had plenty of time for a date- But of course, now was not the time for that.

Moving to a new place, to attend school, was educational, just sometimes not in the way one expected. For example, "nousotchu" was the Japanese word for stroke. As in, "Is this what it's like to have a stroke?" The word reverberated in Charlotte's skull, the look in her lavender eyes hard. She'd learned this weird from the school's chatroom. One student had casually said that the way Charlie wrote made them feel they were having a stroke. To which another student interjected, "Hey, give her a break, she's foreign!" And collectively, everyone had probably forgotten it. Everyone except Charlie. The chatroom had been a creative solution to practicing the language without having to, y'know, actually talk to people. But after the short honeymoon period of meeting other students and wasting the bulk of an evening in the chatroom, her ineptitude with speaking Japanese came glaring back at her. "Is this what it's like to have a stroke?" Like that the honeymoon was over. It wasn't like she could magically make herself better at Japanese. There was only so much that a Japanese dictionary and two months in a country could do for a bad student with a speech impediment. Charlotte was contemplating the possibility of being selectively mute until she graduated when someone approached her. She had found a bench to take a break on when he found her, this vaguely familiar white-haired boy. He wore a Yuuei uniform, so at least Charlie knew the were schoolmates. She at least caught his introduction, while the crowd bustled around them. He was Shimizu Haruto, class something-or-other. They were classmates? Of course they were, he knew her name. Hesitantly, the prawn extended her hand, lightly clasping Haruto's own hand in a handshake. "Nice to meet you," Charlie replied, "Fujioka Charlotte. Charlie is okay."
That's when the torrent began, of which the prawn caught... nothing. Something about "friends" and "new students" and someone named Chise-- in light of her recent shaming on the school chat, however, Charlotte was too abashed to ask Haruto to slow down, to repeat himself, or confess that she didn't understand. "I am okay," was the resulting cryptic response, "Thank you."The last thing she wanted to do was fumble her way through a conversation, particularly a verbal one. But she didn't want to seem entirely dismissive. She gestured at the festival around them, and asked, "Do you like?" word count | 400

Not a talkative one, this Charlie was. Well, he was aware that Japanese wasn't her first language. Still, it was a bit awkward- He couldn't read her facial expressions, for obvious reasons, so he couldn't exactly tell what the girl was thinking. Were her curt answers simply due to her unfamiliarity with Japanese? Or was she simply not interested in conversing with him? The white-haired boy rubbed his head awkwardly. With his luck, it could easily be both.
Well, he had promised Tsutsuji-sensei that he would try, after all. If Charlie didn't want to talk, there wasn't much he could do about it, so he may as well just hope she was just uncomfortable with the language? His English could not be compared to that of his girlfriend, but... it should be passable, right? "<Ah, you would be more com, com... Complicated, speaking English?>"
Ah, no, that wasn't the right word. Comfortable, comfortable... What was that in English again? Ah, hopefully she got his meaning. Was this how it felt like for her to try and speak Japanese? It must be tough. "Do I like... Ah, the festival? <I am, having fun. This is, my first time, with such a large... population?>" Ah no, that was close, but had more of a connatation of population. Crowd, what would be a better word for crowd...?
"<I must sorry, for my English. It is, bad, I know.> Wow, he didn't realize just how bad he was at English until he tried to hold a conversation in it. But on the bright side, it was better to find out now than during a test! Besides, a chance to practice conversational English wasn't all that common, surprisingly enough- So many of the exchange students spoke Japanese, some of them even more fluently than Haruto! As such, conversations tended to default to the local language.
"<Are you, joined, in any of the... races?>"

Charlotte watched the white-haired boy for a response, a reaction, anything. She could sense him squirming under the attention. And, much to Charlotte's surprise, he started to stammer out an English question. A brow ridge quirked in mute amusement. It would be hypocritical of her to laugh, though-- it was a sweet gesture. Far more than anyone in chat had made. And it was clear by his accent, and fumbling, that English was not his first language by a long-shot. "Japanese is fine," she sung, a warmth creeping into her voice, "English is hard, yes?"If he was attempting English, she would keep attempting Japanese. Fair was fair. The corners of her eyes pinched. Charlie could respect someone who tried. His response to her question was a little more assured, and his question in return was comprehensible enough. "I understand!" Charlotte insisted, "No sorry. You learn. I learn. Practice! Practice and learn! More!"She'd gotten a little too excited about the learning opportunity, mostly due to the conversation in chat earlier. Again, ghosts of the rude words simmered in the back of her mind. Her gaze dropped from Haruto-san, and settled on her hands. "Yes, I am Calvary Battle," she insisted, sounding less-than enthused at the prospect. She really was excited, but she was getting too far into her own hand, and feeling rather bummed as the result. "Haruto-san..." she trailed, trying to figure a polite way to say what she wanted to say, "Someone... ask you to talk with me? Or... why?"She was peering at him, to see if he knew. Was he one of the people in the chat when that chick had begun teasing her? Because Charlie wouldn't put up with that sh**, not even in Japan. word count | 291

Alright, so he wasn't quite sure if his gamble had paid off or not. Charlie did sound perkier, but she insisted on speaking Japanese. Had he misunderstood something? However, the more he spoke, and the more awkwardly, the more excited it seemed Charlie was getting. "<<Yes, practice!>>" Haruto replied, getting caught up in her enthusiasm. Despite her saying Japanese was fine, he knew that she had perked up significantly from his attempt at English- Well, maybe she was just laughing at him inside- But he'd rather that than awkwardness of their initial attempt at conversation!
Oh, so she was in the cavalry battle, was she? "Cavalry, in English, is... Hmm. I know <<horse>> but... Ah, <<Horse back battle, sounds, fun. Do you, know,>> Haruto paused for a moment, trying to fetch the right word from his vocabulary, before finally admitting defeat and asking in Japanese. "Teammates?" Despite being class president, he couldn't claim to be familiar with the arrangements for the festival. Did the cavalry battle participants choose their team in advance, or would it be assigned on the day of?
"<<Me, am doing, rescue.>> Haruto supplied without being asked- Although he mistakenly used the wrong pronoun. "<<Should be, interesting.>>" The white-haired student had significantly changed his direction after the disaster at Semper Fi. No longer was he content to just be a doctor- He wanted to be able to save people that were in front of him. And so, he had redoubled his efforts, and added some of the school's optional rescue training to his courseload- Some of which went better than others. Still, this sports festival was, to him, a chance to show the results of this. That he wasn't the useless boy who could hardly to more than curl up in a corner while others saved the day anymore.
And if he was wrong, well, he could only worry about that when it came to it.
However, Charlie followed up with a non-sequitur which caught the vice-president a bit off guard. "Well, yes. Tsutsuji-sensei suggested that you might have be having a hard time getting used to Japan, and hoped that I could help you settle in. Honestly, I had wanted to catch you sooner... But, well, as you can see, that didn't happen. Why do you ask?" Haruto switched back to Japanese for his explanation, feeling unconfident in his ability to explain well in English. Still, with a better grasp on Charlie's knowledge of Japanese, he made an effort to speak just that little bit clearer, and to avoid harder words that she might not know.
He didn't know why she had asked, nor did he have any reason to hide it. Still, he had to wonder what had prompted this question. Did it really matter if someone had told him to? Did he really need a reason to talk to a new classmate, especially as one of the two leaders of the class? Did she think it was like that stereotypical scenario where someone lost a bet and had to confess to their classmate? But this wasn't even a confession, he was just talking to her! Why would there be a problem with that?

Charlotte cracked a smile at the defeated "チームメイト" that Haruto-san had offered. It was funny how English, the great swindler of other languages, was sometimes borrowed in Japanese. This was one such example, hence the delighted pinch at the corners of her eyes. "Teammates?" Charlotte supplied in English, inclining her head at her classmate, "I do not know. See later."He continued, explaining that he was doing rescue, which should be interesting. "Interesting," Charlotte agreed, nodding. Rescue was a "close second" for events that piqued her interest, but she'd been more interested in the Calvary Battle. It felt more like... you know, a normal school event. Like chicken-fights in the pool. And less like a program for child-soldiers. Though much of Yuuei seemed swept up in the fervor of growing future heroes, Charlotte was of a more withdrawn mindset. She'd support those would-be heroes, help those she could, but otherwise would never raise a hand to anyone, if she could help it. Her spontaneous question, which sprung from wells of a troubled wind, was met with honesty. The recommendation came from Tsutsuji-sensei. Which was better than the alternative. The rest of the explanation was lost. Something-something Japan, something-something-something. And, of course, the logical follow-up-- why? Charlotte, who'd been watching Haruto-san a closely, dropped her gaze, and promptly glanced down the table at the devices displayed upon it. She wasn't one to snitch, and Boss didn't raise no crybaby. But if someone was asking, she would explain. She wanted to talk to it, with anyone who'd listen. And Haruto-san was listening. "Students... classmates... on chatroom..." Charlotte floundered for the words in Japanese, "Say that my write sounds like having a stroke."A huff. "I do not remember who say," Charlotte added, which was the truth, "But... first, I think that... maybe you are friend? Maybe you come here, laugh at bad talk. Say that my talk like stroke too."She surveyed him, measuring his reaction, "I am here three months now. I like to see them speak good in three months. They speak with me in three months, see if they good English."O-kay, so maybe it bothered her more than she cared to admit. The words that followed were a murmured stream of English swears, something about the intelligence of said offenders and sexual preferences of the maternal variety. "It's good, though," Charlotte concluded, dismissing her own outrage before it could froth into anything tangible, "Tsutsuji-sensei say you come, no problems. Teachers always say... that."word count | 398

Haruto could only rub his head awkwardly as the word he was looking for was supplied to him. "<<Teammates, yes.>>" Languages were hard, he couldn't blame Charlie for her struggles in the slightest. "<<I see. It is for me same.>>" That grammar sounded wrong, even to Haruto. So he took a second stab at it."<<Err, It is, same, for me?">>" In any case, the point should have gotten across. Though the rescue group overall had met earlier... Well, it hadn't gone too well, but that was besides the point. Anyways, they didn't know how the group would be split up, although they did know that there were four individual courses being set up. Or would they be working as one large group to do all four courses?
Well, anyways, it seemed that this was the case for more than just his group. "Hard to be ready, not knowing teammates." Haruto supplied. There was only so much practice that could be done without being able to work with the people you would actually be with during the event. He could only imagine it was even worse for the cavalry battle, which would have an even greater focus on teamwork and matching each other's movements.
Hearing the reason Charlie had been suspicious of his approach, Haruto's heart sank. "Seriously!? For someone, a student of UA to say such a thing, no less... Who was it? Er, <<Do you know who it was?>>" Haruto asked in English, his anger apparent. For someone who wanted to be a student to mock their classmates... If he didn't give them a piece of his mind, he would at least report this to a teacher!
Of course, she didn't remember. Haruto frowned, his anger unabated. Seriously, who among his classmates would make fun of how someone else spoke? He wanted to say that no one came to mind, but... On second thought, there were a few whose verbal filters seemed nonexistent. Still, he would have thought his classmates to have more sense, than this! How should we say- Shouldn't prospective heroes know that if they didn't have anything nice to say, then to not say it at all?
"I can see, why you would think that way." Haruto responded. It was just a case of bad timing, really. Seriously, if he knew who did it! He would give them a stern lecture, for sure! Hmph! "You're doing very well for three months." Haruto assured. Wasn't his English as bad or worse, and he'd been learning for how many years now? "Everyone's just spoiled by the perfect English of all our other exchange students. You'll get there. They do say that immersion is the fastest way to learn, right?"
He chose to ignore the words which he did not understand, exactly, but were obviously nothing polite. Let Charlie vent- It would do her good to vent some of the stress. Though, he wasn't quite sure what she meant by her last words- What exactly was it that teachers always said? "I'm sorry?" Haruto asked. "What, do teachers always say?"

Charlotte nodded encouragingly as Haruto-san spoke, without even a flicker of judgement upon her expression. He was a nice guy, floundering his way through an agreement, in a language that wasn't is first. Haruto's voiced concern about not having met her teammates was met by a shrug.
"I think... not choice," Charlotte insisted, ponderous and grave. If she had assumed right, she was under the impression that they were randomly placed-in groups, so even if Yuuei kids collaborated, there was no way of honing skills as a team. It was luck of the draw. But perhaps she was wrong.
Something in her expression softened at the boy's sympathetic burst of anger, her brow stitching. There was a murmured thanks at his remark on her Japanese acquisition. Beyond that, however, Charlie simply listened. She didn't have much to add to the conversation, anyways.
That is, until Haruto-san asked for clarification about what she meant in her remark about the teacher. Charlotte drew a hand to her chin, trying to formulate the sentence differently.
"Teacher always send nice student to check on new student," Charlotte reiterated. she really didn't mean it in a bad way, honestly. It was natural to be concerned about the "new kid fitting in", and to send someone mature and sympathetic to reach-out to them. Not someone who would alienate the already-alienated figure, but someone... kind, "New student quiet? Nice student say, 'Hello', and new student not scary." She meant "not scared". Oops, "I say, 'no problem' because you are nice student. You are here because I am new student, and you help me."
She was rambling a bit, now, trying to leap through the hoops of explaining herself, " 'No problem' because you are not mean to me."
Lost somewhere in translation was the sentiment that the two of them weren't going to have problems because Haruto-san wasn't trying to start shit with Charlie, and thus Charlie would not have to defend her pride accordingly. He was a nice boy, an emissary of the teacher, here to extend an olive branch to the quiet new kid. If only Charlotte were so articulate.
She rubbed the top of her head, leaning on her English crutch, "You don't understand, do you?"

Charlie suggested that the teammates would be chosen randomly- Well, that seemed likely, given the circumstances. "<<We will have knowledge soon.>>" There was only so much time before the events would begin, after all. Haruto smiled awkwardly. Saying that had reminded him of just how little time he had to prepare for the rescue mission. <<Ah, I am not ready!>>" The boy complained, even though it was pointless to say so at this point. Surprisingly, he managed to maintain his use of English, despite this outburst.
As Charlie explained what she had meant, Haruto found it easier to understand. However, the arthropod mutant had made a mistake- She thought that Haruto did this for all of his new classmates. This wasn't true- While he was responsible for helping them settle into the class, this was the first time he had gone out of his way to track one of them down outside of class to offer help. Should he correct her on that, or let her hold her misconception? He wasn't sure how she would react to being singled out this way, after all. Perhaps it would be better to tell a white lie, and not risk upsetting her?
However, on the other hand, Haruto truly did hate telling lies, even by omission. And if he did do this, and she found out from another source later, wouldn't she be even more upset about having been lied to about it? "I see, but, umm-I'm sorry, but, uh- It's uh, not just because you're new. I mean, Tsutsuji-sensei hasn't asked me to do this for any of our other transfer students, so..." Haruto tried to explain it in a way that wouldn't hurt Charlie's feelings, but had no clue if he had succeeded. It didn't help that he had spent so much time searching for the right words that his speech had been awkward and faltering.
In any case, the girl had started speaking in English despite having refused to earlier, which was not the best sign. "Oh, no, no- <<I do, understand. I think. It is, about, uh...>> Intention, <<Right?>>" She was saying that because his intentions were good, it was fine that he was doing this because he was told to, right? That he hadn't treated it like a chore and been disinterested, instead going out of his way to try and help the newcomer to feel more comfortable.

The prawn had crossed her arms-- not out of any uncommunicative motives, just because it was a position she often took, and found comfortable. She leaned back in her chair, peering down her nasal ridge at the white-haired boy. His explanation was halting, initially, and all the "umm's" and "uh's" muddled her understanding. She caught "not... because you're new" and "Tsutsuji-sensei hasn't asked me... transfer students". She got the picture. It wasn't an "everybody" thing. It was a "her" thing.
Her eyes squinted, mostly out of confusion... but with the thinned eyes and slitted pupils, her look might seem scrutinizing, perhaps even hostile. Charlotte... supposed it made sense. Of course it wasn't for all transfer students. Other transfer students didn't sound like freaking idiots in Japanese. Other students didn't look totally freaking mutated. Maybe it was well-intentioned, an attempt at making the new kid not feel so lonely. Or maybe it was pity.
It wasn't just because you're new, Charlotte reiterated, it's also because, despite being at a hero school, you're still different.
The prawn's gaze dropped, surveying some ambiguous spot just past Haruto, a meter off of the ground. Who could she even be mad at, though? The boy who was showing her a glimmer of kindness? Or the teacher who wanted to make sure all of her students felt welcomed, which meant periodically singling out the ones that weren't welcome.
It didn't make any sense. But the prawn still mustered an, "Okay, I understand."
Even though she didn't. She was just as confused as when this conversation had begun.

Haruto was only able to sit awkwardly and look at Charlie. As before, he found the girl's crustacean-esque face difficult to read. However, her narrowed eyes suggested exactly what Haruto was afraid of. That she was angry about being treated so differently from everyone else. The white-haired boy's heart sank. It was the right thing to do, so why did it feel so bad? Things had been going so well, and Haruto just had to ruin it by telling the truth. And what was the full truth, even? He hadn't been told the full story, about why Charlie needed to be singled out like this. Was it really just that she was unused to Japanese, or was there more to the story?
Haruto wouldn't normally come to this conclusion, but it was already quite odd that Charlie struggled with the language so much. All of the other exchange students spoke nearly as well as native speakers- Which really should be the exception. However, what this suggested is that the other students had simply had more time to prepare before moving to Japan. Could Charlie have a special situation that led to all of this? Was there even a way of asking that without making things a million times worse, and more awkward?
Probably not. Haruto fidgeted as he waited for Charlie to say something, anything. To blame him for being patronizing, or something. Anything was better than this awful silence. But in the end, the girl would just look down, and say a few meek words. Then back to an awkward silence. Haruto fidgeted a little, unsure of what to say. "<<Umm. Uh. I am sorry, I did not intend to upset you.>>" Haruto would start by apologizing in English, using the other's native language in order to show his sincerity, despite his awkward enunciation and phrasing.
He really wished he could start this over from the beginning, but there were things which could not be taken back.
