There were people everywhere, seas of them bustling through the gym, talking raucously, perusing tables, most of it far over Charlotte's head. The prawn felt the sound reverberating in her skull, jarring her limited speech capacity to numbness. Why couldn't it be time for the Calvary Battle, already? Sports-related events were so much easier than showcasing her inventions.
Sure, the limited things she had to showcase were okay-- nothing compared to what the other Support Studies kids had to show-- she'd just enrolled a week ago, okay! She hadn't had time to create earth-shattering devices to woo the masses. (And even if she did, she didn't have the vocabulary to describe them.)
Charlotte sat behind the table, close enough to field questions should the need arise, but far enough that she could work-on a bracer that was splayed across her lap. There was a network of wires and relays over its surface, and it was apparent that this device was a work in progress. Much like a vendor at a craft fair might knit while there was a lull in the action, Charlotte was occupying idle time with creating.
It wasn't like she had to actively answer questions, anyways-- there were other support studies kids in the same area, far more fluent than she, selling their inventions. Charlotte just had to be attentive to when her devices were being looked at.
The two devices that Charlotte had to offer were easy to miss. The first was a small magnetic sensor that, when placed between door and door-frame, could trip any manner of devices. Presently this device was affixed to small model-door, which was then connected to a camera, connected to a small screen. Said screen would light-up with an image of the person who had tripped the door, and the screen would remain on for a few moments before powering off. Charlotte had enlisted the help of someone to write, "Great for surveillance purposes!" followed quickly by, "Duration of filming can be adjusted by the owner!" Charlotte's love of crime shows had compelled her to create it. Perhaps secret agents could use it in sting operations to catch bad guys!
The second device was the bracer across Charlotte's lap, which she was presently adjusting after it had shorted and accidentally shocked a student from another school. It was a combined glove and bracer. The relays over the bracer part were supposed to provide an electrical current to the outwardly-facing plate of armor. Anyone who struck the outwardly facing plate would get enough of a jolt to repel them, or whatever weapon they might wield, so long as the device was powered-on.
Needless to say, amidst all the fantastic, sleek, otherworldly inventions by other students, Charlotte's little devices paled in comparison. Next year would be better, though, because she'd have an entire year to develop something, rather than a sleepless week. The prawn yawned behind her surgical mask, replacing the armored plate back onto the bracer, and screwing it into place. The bracer/glove was then slid onto its mannequin hand for display, and replaced on the table.
Admittedly, Charlotte zoned out a bit, gaze pointed towards the lights of the gym. How funny, in such a fantastic school as this, their gym still had those gym-specific lights, with the metal cages over the bulbs. Everything else-- the foldaway bleachers, the surface of the basketball court-- were pristine in comparison to what Charlotte knew, but the lights were the same.
Someone stepped into her field of vision. Impressive, given that her head was tilted towards the ceiling. Charlotte snapped to attention. Someone... interesting! Charlotte nodded her head in greeting, an informal bow, and offered a quick, "Good morning."
