Tetsuko: Hey, Jack-san, I'm ready to train if you are. Meet me in the combat training area in a few. Bring whatever gear you have to.
Was the message Tetsuko sent out to her upcoming ally in the cross school event of the U.A. sports festival. She'd posited the idea of training beforehand not too long ago, and was eager to see what some of the new blood in U.A. had up their sleeve. Tetsuko didn't even particularly mind the idea of showing her skills to someone who could, in all actuality, become an opponent in the single fights tournament. As long as she could keep one particular new asset of hers hidden for the time being...
Tetsuko had headed to the training area post-haste, donning her usual short-sleeved tracksuit and tying her light iron-gray hair back for the spar. With stern and wide blue-eyes, she marched on to the combat training area with the intention of giving her all in this preperation for a very, very serious event. As nice as it was to say the most important thing was to just have fun, Tetsuko didn't at all see it that way. This wasn't just about having fun to her, no, this tournament had far greater reaching implications for the young swordswoman.
It was about honor.
The constant presssure the festival placed on her shoulders was another reason she'd been so eager to undergo the training. One could never be too prepared, after all. After arriving at the combat training grounds, Tetsuko picked out one of the circular sparring areas available, walking over to it to hold the space until Jack arrived. Wasting no time waiting for her draconic schoolmate, Tetsuko decided to begin warming up, iron sprouting from her hand and forming itself into a rudimentary iron bokken that she began swinging in controlled, delicate arcs, to hone her technique before her training partner arrived. Tetsuko didn't know what his own fighting would be like, only that he had been referred to as having some kind of dragon related Quirk. They were powerful beasts in Asiatic lore, Tetsuko hoped he could live up to the reputation.
If not, well, Tetsuko could just as easily prepare her ally for the upcoming cross school event by giving him a trial by blades that would hopefully hone his own skills... Besides, she had some new constructs of her own she wished to try out.

Jack honestly didn’t really know what he had expected after he had asked to train with another student.
It was already the next day after he had originally requested it from a fellow classmate named Tetsuko Shindou. It was an in-the-moment question, born from Jack’s inner desire to get to know his classmates more, to help get over his fear of people as a whole. The chatroom that U.A. provided came in handy in that regard, with Jack slowly but surely getting to know people without the anxiety of meeting them in person suddenly.
Tetsuko: Hey, Jack-san, I’m ready to train if you are. Meet me in the combat training area in a few. Bring whatever gear you have to.
He was in the middle of getting ready for the day when the text message from her arrived. His eyes bugged out as he read them, anxiety beginning to fill his system. He honestly didn’t even realize that she would accept his request so soon, especially given he was still a newbie. Granted, that was probably WHY she accepted to begin with; either wanting to give one of the new kids some pointers for the upcoming Sports Festival and Battle Tournament.
He pursed his lips at that last thought. One would think to keep their cards hidden for such events, given that Tetsuko would likely be participating herself. Then again, there was no telling on how far the training would go, so they might be able to keep some cards up their sleeves. One card in particular Jack was keen on keeping was his ability to change individual body parts into their dragonic selves as well, not just a full-transformation.
Jack nodded to himself on that, promptly changing into his more combat-oriented clothes. This, of course, was just a plain old-looking gi with Jack’s usual attire colors, but they actually did stretch to fit him when he fully transformed; an idea that he ironically got from Dragon Ball. It actually was a good idea in concept, so that he wouldn’t be buck-naked when he reverted. That had already happened one too many times, and it would just be a bad time for everyone.
As stated before, the gi didn’t look overly flashy. It was a simple red undershirt with a longish white gi-top with black outlines all around the openings of the gi, black, baggy gi pants, and tied together with a purple belt. The only things that would stand out were the aspects of his regular attire, that being his blue sneakers, which could double as combat boots given the way they were designed, his black, fingerless gloves, his golden bracers with emeralds in both of them, and his strange necklace, which is honestly just a family symbol that his great-great-great grandparents came up with God-knows how long ago.
It took a few minutes to properly get ready, but soon enough he was satisfied. He nodded to his reflection in the mirror, and promptly texted Tetsuko back.
Jack: O-ok! I’m on my way now!
With that, Jack promptly ran out of his room, his tail practically flying right behind him. He had admittedly gotten more comfortable with showing his more draconic traits at U.A., given that no one was going to really judge him. Hell, all the comments that he had gotten in terms of comments were nothing but praise and amazement at such a Quirk. The thought made Jack blush, though he didn’t get TOO comfortable yet. He still didn’t really trust everyone fully, which was just more of a personal issue, but it was definitely a start.
After a couple of minutes of jogging, Jack reached what he assumed was the correct area. Surely enough, there was a girl with grey-brown hair of definite physique about her; most likely Tetsuko, considering she was the only one there. Jack hesitated, unsure of whether to actually go through with this. After a couple of seconds, he shook his head, steeling himself a bit. He had already made the request, there was no point in turning back now!
He resumed his approach at a much more normal pace, trying his best to seem casual. ”Tetsuko-san?” he called over to her, mostly just trying to confirm his initial guess, though said it conversationally. His arms were in front of him, and his tail swayed a bit nervously, but he overall seemed calm otherwise, if not a bit timid. He would give her a rather warm smile, albeit naturally sharp due to his teeth. ”I-it’s nice to officially meet you!” he said, only having to look up just a bit, given she was a few inches taller than he was. He would politely wait for her to reply before continuing on with the training, though he felt his heart race in anticipation. He hoped that he could give her at least a worthy challenger during this training!

Jack: O-ok! I’m on my way now!
Her phone buzzed with that message as Tetsuko underwent her warmups, the delay between her own initial text telling her the boy must have still had to prepare. Understandable, given most people's Quirks were usually difficult to use in just their regular garb, particularly in the case of transformations in mutations. After reading the message, Tetsuko put her phone back with the rest of her stuff - in the gym bag she'd carried in - before getting back to her warmups. The Shindou girl was performing simple, rudimentary, delicate swings with her iron bokken, in sync with her own footwork. It wasn't the most dynamic display, but a trained eye could see the skill behind the consistency and technique on display.
As Tetsuko honed her edge, it dawned on her that she hadn't actually considered how she or Jack would recognize one another. Assuming he appeared like a dragon, it might be easy, if not, it would be a matter of guessing, Tetsuko supposed... Then again, she was currently the only one in the room currently holding a blade, so it wasn't like there were many swordsmen to choose from. She was sure it'd be fine.
Sure enough, before Tetsuko had even spotted him, a new arrival to the combat training area called out her name. Tetsuko turned towards the voice, withdrawing her iron back into her body as she eyed the boy. He seemed to be wearing a gi, which if he was a transformation type, made sense with how loose the material was. The tail was also a dead giveaway that this was indeed the draconic lad that Tetsuko had been looking for. The Japanese girl bowed her head in greeting.
"You must be Jack-san." She uttered simply. "Tetsuko Shindou." Giving her full name wasn't necessary, but with the pride Tetsuko had in her family, it was something she always tended to do. She wanted people to know the Shindou name as much as her own.
The boy seemed to a bit nervous with his greeting, but Tetsuko supposed that wasn't abnormal. Not everyone could deal with strangers that well. "It's nice to meet you too, Jack-san. Let's train well." Tetsuko greeted in her most polite Japanese. It looked like she was going to have to take initiative here, fortunately, she did already have some plans in mind.
"I'll let you decide how we train. Given the upcoming cross school event, it might be beneficial to know what each other can do." Tetsuko said firmly, before holding out her own hand. There was no harm in displaying the basics of her Quirk, considering just how simple it was at a glance. "I'll let you know, my iron Quirk manipulates the iron in my body. I mostly use swords." Was the simplest explanation Tetsuko could give. From her hand, a few small blades would sprout, piercing through her skin from the blood. Yet, as she closed her hands, no wounds were left, regenerated before they could bleed.
"How would you like to train, Jack-san?" Tetsuko inquired, stepping back towards one end of the circle that she'd claimed for them. There were a number of ways they could approach this, after all. "We could just help each other with what we've been working on, spar, work on teamwork... Or any combination. What's your preference?" Tetsuko wasn't exactly a solid decision maker, so some guidance from her training partner would prove helpful. The Shindou girl looked down at him as he answered, one thought arising in her mind above all others.
He was pretty short for a foreigner.

Jack’s smile brightened a little as he had guessed correctly about the woman in front of him. She was rather formal with her greeting, but he could tell that she was just trying to be polite. Jack promptly returned the bow, saying simply ”Jack Orion. Weird name, I know, but it’s what my parents wanted to call me.” He giggled just a bit at that little comment, knowing how strange his name was, but he supposed that’s what made him unique. He felt his heart race a little bit as he noticed her looking him over, most likely trying to get a good read on him. And probably thinking about how short Jack actually is. Give it a few minutes and then tell me if I’m short… he thought, given that their training might involve him having to transform right off the bat, growing into the size of a rather large school bus. He was admittedly a bit self-conscious on his height, given that he was supposed to be a big, mighty dragon but was only just breaking five feet tall. He partially wondered if it was a side effect of his Quirk, but he personally had no idea. After a few moments, Tetsuko then actually held out her hand, saying that she would let him decide how they would train. Jack thought for a second that she was offering her hand for a handshake, before suddenly a few small iron blades came out of her palm. The way the Quirk worked was utterly fascinating, but the sudden appearance of the blades made Jack jump back quite a bit, startled. He looked like a deer in headlights for a second, before realizing that she was just showing off her Quirk. He gulped a little, but then quickly regained his composure. ”Sorry. Just startled me, that’s all,” he said, scratching the back of his head, clearly embarrassed. Whether she would excuse his timidness or not, she would then go to explain that she can manipulate the iron in her body, thus being able to make things like swords and such. Jack raised his eyebrows at the mention of swords, his mind now being torn thinking about new ways to fight and how Tetsuko’s Quirk worked. Once a nerd, always a nerd, he supposed. He tilted his head from left to right, deciding he may as well explain his own abilities likewise. ”That’s a very interesting ability...erm, if it isn’t obvious, I’m a dragon person. I can turn into one of those creatures and change various body parts into their draconic variants, so I’m not limited to just having to transform fully and can likely take my opponent off their guard.” he explained, forgetting that he had originally planned to keep that second part a secret, but there wasn’t much point, he supposed. She would then go on to ask him how he would like to train, giving him various ideas while gesturing to the area she secured for them. Jack held his chin in thought, pursing his lips a bit. ”I think it would be a good idea to try sparring first. It would give us a good idea about what we can do and we can work on tips for one another or figure out how to use our Quirks in conjunction,” he said, suddenly sounding a bit like a nerd, compared to the timid demeanor he gave out before. If it wasn’t clear already, Tetsuko would likely realize that there was more to Jack than meets the eye. Assuming that she agreed to the idea of sparring, Jack would rub his hands in excitement. ”Let’s get this started, then! Don’t hold back too much on me, now!” he exclaimed, rushing over to one of sides of the area. He decided it would be best to transform fully right off the bat, to give him more experience fighting in his more giant form and give Tetsuko experience fighting a larger enemy. Lord knows there were likely villains out there who could turn into a giant monster themselves, after all. Once Tetsuko was in place, Jack would nod, making sure that she was ready to go. If she nodded back, Jack would practically immediately begin to transform. It wasn’t really a painful process at all; it felt more like he was getting out of his shell of a human body. It was like this one genie Pokemon he remembered, whose true power could only be accessed for a limited time. Jack supposed he was a little bit like that, when he thought about this battle later. Jack began to grow in size, his hands morphing into something more paw-like, though he was still clearly able to hold things with ease with him. His clothes grew with him, including his bracers and his necklace, so he didn’t completely look like the monster most similar to him from this one monster hunting game, but it was pretty damn close. His face morphed into that of a mighty dragon, and extremely large wings sprouted from his back, covered in the same pure white scales that began to emerge from his body. Once his transformation was complete, Jack would let out a mighty roar as he prepared himself for Tetsuko’s inevitable assault. He got into a strange pose, one that seemed to mix more of a martial artist’s pose, but still took advantage of the fact that he technically had four legs now. His tail swished in anticipation as he looked down at Tetsuko, who was now quite smaller in comparison to him. ”GIVE ME YOUR BEST SHOT!” he exclaimed, his voice much more of a snarl, and booming across the area. The dragon Sirius has officially revealed himself!

Short, and decidedly… Meek. He wasn’t much like a dragon at all, the more Tetsuko saw of him. He had a dragon’s tail, of course, but aside from that, from what Tetsuko had seen so far, he hadn’t the stoicism nor pride of your typical dragon. Perhaps he just fell into more of the Asiatic depictions, with less focus on ferocity and force, and more on wisdom and patience. How much of a dragon’s spirit this nervous young boy had would remain to be seen, and undoubtedly assessed, by the ironblooded girl. When it came to combat, she couldn’t but judge strongly, though it wasn’t as if she did this out of malice.
Tetsuko just nodded her head lightly as Jack gave his full name, insisting it was a strange one. Not that the Shindou girl would know, as Jack Orion sounded just as strange to her as any other foreign name… Really, she wasn’t actually sure what he meant by his comment, Jack sounded like a pretty normal name, so what was strange about his parents choosing it? Her confusion was probably just a cultural things, so Tetsuko ignored, pressing on to continue with her initiative in pushing for their training session.
Judging his height for his age and ethnicity already was one thing, but underestimating him for it was another, something Tetsuko didn’t intend to do. After all, she didn’t yet know the extent of his draconian abilities, which could well make any difference in combat ability relative to height entirely negligible. Though, that wasn’t to say that height was always a disadvantage in combat, as Tetsuko knew of countless stronger fighters of small stature… Ultimately, once the training actually began, all this pondering of hers would be for nought.
His Quirk was going to be the defining factor when it came to how powerful Jack would be in combat, not just for training, but for the event itself. Knowing each other’s Quirks, at least at a basic function, could do wonders for them once the actual event began. With this in mind, Tetsuko tried to demonstrate her own Quirk, sprouting iron blades from her hand that unintentionally ended up startling the boy. For a moment Tetsuko wondered if she’d been a bit too sudden, opening her mouth to apologize before Jack did it first. ”Ah, it’s fine. I didn’t mean to frighten.” Tetsuko said a little awkwardly, losing her composure a bit. Maybe she should given a warning before sprouting blades from her hand. Pushing off the self-consciousness she felt from that little faux pas, they pressed on with discussing how to begin their training.
Jack naturally returned Tetsuko’s explanation with his own. Obviously, it wasn’t too complicated, but it was nice to receive the confirmation that his abilities were transformation based. Furthermore, the fact that he’d the option of partially transforming rather than fully was also quite notable, something which they could very well use to their advantage if need be. ”I see, I see…” Tetsuko nodded along, clearly listening very well to what he had to say about his abilities. Not just for her own benefit in the tournament, but also for the potential practicality they’d bring in the inter-school event. Knowing the aces up your allies’ sleeves was a magnificent boon.
When it came to how they actually trained, Jack chose to start off with a spar. A bit unconventional, in that it didn’t allow much room for warming up or testing anything out, but Tetsuko didn’t particularly mind. It meant they could get right into the nitty gritty. ”Very well. A spar it is then.” Tetsuko affirmed with a slight nod of her head. The boy was becoming a bit less timid now, it seemed, but there was still an air of inexperience about him. Hard to explain, but perhaps it was just her instincts as a martial artist that clued her in to it.
He was nonetheless eager to begin, rushing to one end of the arena and requesting that Tetsuko didn’t hold back. ”I had no intention of holding back. Give me your best.” The swordswoman proclaimed proudly, calmly walking to her own end of their little “arena”. To hold back one’s strength was to look down on your opponent, so Tetsuko was going to give him her utmost, for better or for worse.
Nodding back to the boy, Tetsuko witnessed another transformation type Quirk in action. Kenshin’s was much flashier, by comparison, though perhaps not as extreme in how much it changed. Right before Tetsuko’s eyes, the boy grew to great size, scales covering his body and wings sprouting as all other parts of his body assumed their draconian form. It was an impressive change in appearance, to be sure, with Tetsuko raising a brow in surprise at just how big the boy had grown. Her only disappointment was the more Western dragon look, she preferred the Eastern variant herself, but that was neither here nor there.
He gave out a mighty roar, and Tetsuko would be lying if she said it didn’t make her feel some small semblance of intimidation emanating from him. However, as someone who strove to attain an immovable heart, she wasn’t going to let all this showing off get to her. ”You’re gonna get my best, don’t worry about that.” After all, now was the perfect time to try out one of the new blades she’d conceived. Her second sacred sword, next to her Yukifuri.
Tetsuko held both her palms in front of her, iron sprouting from each and weaving and winding itself together to form a long hilt in her hands. Gripping it tightly, this iron that flowed so smoothly formed itself into a peculiar blade in her hands. The hilt was incredibly long, as long as the blade itself, which was a stern and powerful Japanese edge. Over the hilt was a long bar guard, that covered Tetsuko’s knuckles. Once the blade was fully formed, she held it front of her, in an offensive stance. This was a nagamaki, a sword and polearm hybrid. She’d given this particular blade its name, however.
”Nadare…” (Avalanche)
Its name uttered into the air, Tetsuko let out a low, deep breath, steeling herself… Before rushing forward right toward Jack! Luckily, the blade she wielded was blunt to avoid injury, as the moment she was in range Tetsuko would try and swing the large blade down onto Jack’s draconian head! However, it was an intentionally obvious and telegraphed move.

Tetsuko surprisingly lost her cool for a split moment as Jack jumped back in surprise at the sudden usage of her Quirk. She quickly began to apologize before Jack beat her to the punch, which led the girl to further apologize for startling him. Jack would wave the apology aside, saying simply ”Don’t worry about it. I’m just not used to being around people too much yet.” This, of course, was the truth, though he left it rather vague as to why that was. That answer was both simple and complicated; he’s already seen how bad a person could really be, thus causing him to be wary of anyone, even if it wasn’t on purpose.
After the small misunderstanding, the two quickly agreed upon a spar to start things off. Jack decided to keep it brief; lasting as long as he could stay transformed, so about 10 to 15 minutes. After that, he would decide it would be a good idea to stop before discussing the brief match. Contrary to the dramatic stereotype given by anime, fights were surprisingly fast, and were ended usually within a few minutes. As such, something that felt like a long time in the show was actually mere minutes away, a prime example being the infamous 5 minutes from the show Dragon Sphere Z. So, with that in mind, 15 minutes being transformed was rather reasonable in hindsight.
As the spar began, Jack immediately took to transforming fully, causing a rather surprised look from Tetsuko. He grinned, which looked surprisingly normal despite his now longer face and even sharper teeth than before. ”Not so small now, am I?” he asked, chuckling just a bit at how ridiculous the transformation was, even to him. Going from a small stature to being just barely bigger than the average school bus...his Quirk was definitely an odd one, to say the least. Not that he minded too much, of course.
Tetsuko wasted no time as well, summoning what appeared to be one of her signature swords, though the edge was clearly blunted, likely to avoid causing too much damage. She charged right towards Jack in a rather predictable fashion, if he were being honest. Granted, she may well be just testing his reflexes since she was the more experienced fighter of the two. She would then jump the moment she was in range, a rather obvious blow aimed for Jack’s head incoming.
Jack didn’t even attempt to dodge it. Instead, in a rather unorthodox move compared to most dragons, he would suddenly move his wings in front of him, the blade mostly likely hitting just the lining of them. The blow definitely stung a bit, but it was still a lot better than taking a direct blow to the head. He wasted no time in counter-attacking, flinging his wings outward, to at least make the girl stagger, and aimed a punch right where she stood. He moved at a surprisingly normal rate for a regular person, despite his big size.
Whether the attack was successful or not, Jack wouldn’t let her get a moment to rest, going on the attack. He mixed his martial arts skills with his more draconic abilities, basic punches moving into tail swipes, kicks suddenly followed by a flap of his wings to cause a gust of wind. It would likely look a little weird, a technical quadapedral dragon busting out martial arts moves, but it at least would catch people off guard. It was definitely an unusual way to fight, but one that definitely had its uses.
Not that he was about to start biting and clawing her, of course. That would just be rather mean!

Indeed, he wasn't so small anymore, but that wasn't any concern to Tetsuko. The bigger they are, the harder they fall, and all that. It just meant she'd need to be careful not to get caught in a clash of strength with the dragon, where his weight would give him a significant advantage. Appearances weren't everything, and even if Jack looked like a dragon, Tetsuko was going to be the one to decide if he actually fought like one. Whether or not she disappointed him, Tetsuko was prepared to fight with her all, if only to test out that new blade of hers... A nagamaki, a sword and polearm hybrid, with this particular design featuring an iron bar not unlike other hilt-guards on European swords, making it a perfect weapon when a strong defence was just as needed as a strong offence.
Tetsuko would first use that sword in what was a clearly telegraphed swing at the dragon's head, with little intention of actually hitting him. This was just a test to see how he responded, to get an early grasp on how he fought. Jack decided to block the blow with the softer part of his wing, taking the full force of a powerful blunt blade rather than trying to avoid it or otherwise counter. His full size made him quite the easy target, it seemed.
As the wings were flung back outward, Tetsuko's blade was quickly returned to a defensive position while she leaped backward, a draconian punch coming her way that she quickly deflected with the iron bar over her blade's hilt, as she sidestepped it and continued to keep her focus on the dragon. He wasn't fighting with his bite, something she find minorly interesting, and instead continued to unleash an assault that appeared to be more based around martial artistry than the actual brute force he likely possessed. It was more than she'd expected, but a fully distinguished dragon, he was yet not...
He wasn't slowed down in this larger form, and his martial arts abilities weren't those of a novice, but Tetsuko would quickly be showing her own skills too. The blade in her hands was wielded deftly and swiftly, as though it were light as a feather, as she took up a strong defense against the dragon's attacks, deflecting and parrying away his strikes with her blade while she dodged them, jumping over tail strikes and rooting herself into the ground with iron spurs to resist the bellowing winds. The full skill of the swordsman was on display, skill enough to clash against a beast of such size. Her bones were aching with all the force moving her around, but Tetsuko still had plenty of gas in her.
His attacks would be moving her around with each clash, thanks to the sheer weight behind them, but Tetsuko kept her feet steady and firm, sliding and dashing along as she put up a steadfast resistance. Her ability with the blade wasn't just as a defensive tool, however, and Tetsuko eventually decided to try and test this dragon's endurance, to see how much he could defend himself with that massive size. As one of his punches came in, Tetsuko would dash to the side and a parry it again, but this time, she'd follow it up with a powerful thrust with the hard point of her blunt blade. The long hilt gave her plenty of power with a thrust, like on would have with a spear, and she aimed it right at his draconian limb after the punch. If it connected, it was going to hurt a fair bit, thanks to the sheer hardness of the iron itself, and Tetsuko wouldn't stop there, rushing forward after her thrust and trying to deliver a pair of alternating slashes to Jack's torso, striking with the edge of her blunt blade to try and shift him onto defence, and see how he fared!

As the battle between the two students waged on, Jack could feel a bigger and bigger admiration for his classmate and how skilled she actually was. Their attacks clashed over and over, both fighters trying their best to gain an edge in this little sparring match, and Jack felt his time limit coming closer and closer, his body aching under the strain of keeping his full power under control.
Nonetheless, he fought as a martial artist that was rather giant rather than as an actual dragon. This was on purpose, as Jack did not want to accidentally maim his friend. However, as they battle waged on, with Tetsuko enduring and dodging every blow he threw at her, that strategy was becoming less and less effective. He grunted as her steel blade hit his joints, causing a jolt of pain coursing through him. He began to flap his wings even faster, to the point where he was beginning to take off just a bit, though not much.
He was starting to feel winded, and was thinking of reverting early, when Tetsuko probably did the dumbest thing one could possibly do to him in a fight. She slashed right onto Jack’s chest, causing the boy to panic and squeak surprisingly loudly in fright, dodging the blow rather quickly for his size, but the blade would manage to catch on Jack’s shirt and rip it right off, due to how much it had to stretch in order for it to fit him.
The scar on his chest wasn’t too visible at first, but in his panic Jack had reverted back to normal, the large pink scar right over his heart being as clear as the blue sky. Jack backed up a rather fair distance from Tetsuko, his breathing turning rapid as he looked at her, his eyes filled with fear. The scene that had happened so long ago played within a split second inside of Jack’s mind, causing the boy to start having a bit of a panic attack. It wasn’t Tetsuko’s fault by any means, it was moreso just Jack’s trauma rearing its ugly head.
After a minute, whatever Tetsuko’s response to that little surprise act from the small dragon boy was, Jack would start to take deep breaths, trying to calm himself down. It took a moment, but the boy’s face began to regain its color. ”S-sorry,” he croaked, trying to swallow down the bile in his throat. ”I-I’m a bit sensitive about being hit there. I should have told you earlier, sorry…”
He then sat down on the ground, trying to recompose himself. ”T-that was really good swordsmanship there. Who taught you those moves?” he asked, partially in pure curiosity, partially to veer the topic away from his sudden freak out. Hopefully Tetsuko didn’t get too curious about it, because then he probably wouldn’t have much choice other than to explain to her his trauma, and that’s just something he really didn’t want to do. Ever.

At the very least, Tetsuko could be sure of the effectiveness of her blade. The nagamaki was designed as an anti-cavalry weapon, so it followed naturally that the sword gave one an edge against larger threats, dragons included. With little notable effort involved, Tetsuko found herself parrying away the dragon's attacks. His martial skills may not have been those of a beginner, but they weren't that far beyond an amateur's. His training, at the very least, wasn't enough to give him some way of defending against the thrusting capacity of the nagamaki.
The long hilt giving Tetsuko more leverage behind each attack, she was able to wound a dragon's will with her simple strikes. He wasn't exactly living up to the title he boasted, Tetsuko was finding, and her disappointment was only going to grow once her followup attack occurred. A truly proud dragon certainly didn't shy away from an attack to his midsection with such a degree of cowardice.
His scar explained things a little, Tetsuko raising a brow at it as he backed away. This boy was so proud to be a dragon? Tetsuko was actually getting kind of annoyed, turning her nagamaki over in her hand and leaning against it as she looked to the boy.
"Conceding so soon?" Tetsuko uttered out at first, as she started to notice some of the boy's behavior. He wasn't exactly breathing well, his skin was a bit paler than normal... Was he? Well... The Shindou girl supposed it wasn't fair for her to judge someone else for having one. Her expression softened a little, and she patiently waited for him to catch his breaths.
All this from an attack to his chest... Inconvenient and troublesome.
He apologized, again, and Tetsuko started to realize just how much she hated that. The trend of people apologizing to her for stupid things was starting to annoy her a fair bit. "It's fine." Tetsuko uttered quietly, leaning against the sword she'd put in the ground. This was getting awkward and uncomfortable real fast.
Would he run away if anyone tried to attack, of all places, his chest? That was a problem, right? Tetsuko figured it was something that should probably be remedied. Not just... Then again... Tetsuko just pushed it aside for now. With all her own training going on, it wasn't exactly within her responsibilities to help others. Not that she could help it.
Jack changed the topic rather suddenly, leaving Tetsuko no reason not to respond. "The masters of Kashima Shinden Jikishinkage-ryuu." The swordswoman answered quickly. "Grandmaster of the school, Ryouchi Shindou, is my grandfather." Tetsuko answered, a boast that she didn't mind making at all. The Shindou girl was quite proud of her own lineage after all.
After she'd spoken, however, Tetsuko didn't know what else to say, and just glanced back at Jack again. That problem of his... Was it alright to leave it alone? Some people would have told her to just let it be, not her problem. Tetsuko would have agreed with them. It just didn't quite feel right now... She supposed she had to say... Something.
Her brain was wracked for a few moments for whatever wisdom she could actually share.
"You know... It's good. That you know what it's like to be cut."
Not the best start, admittedly, and Tetsuko fidgeted a fair bit after realizing what she'd said so bluntly, continuing on right away. "I mean, that is, it's important. In a way. A swordsman who knows what a blade can do becomes much better at avoiding them. I don't think... You would have dodged my blade otherwise." He'd moved on instinct then. Tetsuko could have cut him if she'd put more of her own effort in, but if one were to balance her own abilities against his... Well, maybe his experience saved him. Her own experience was what let her speak now, after all.
"Of course, that isn't my business. I just know that if you're cut, you stop it from happening again." Tetsuko uttered out shakily, having her own bout of uncertainty right about then. The Shindou girl grabbed her sword, reabsorbing the iron into her own body, before glancing Jack's way one more time.
"Just don't let fear of it rule you... Not that it's that easy." Her words didn't contain malice or judgment, but instead, a hint of empathy. It was rare that her elders' wisdom was so applicable, so perhaps... Tetsuko just wanted to spread the good word of her school. Her approach wasn't great, though.

Jack couldn’t help but flinch a little bit as Tetsuko asked a bit harshly at first if he was conceding so soon. He obviously hadn’t meant for his little freak out to happen, but pure trauma practically forced his body to react the way it did. While his friend’s sword didn’t particularly remind Jack of the event that caused his initial trauma, the blow to the chest did bring it back, if even for only a split moment. He honestly felt bad that he had reacted so poorly, but there only training could help him get over this. Hopefully after he got a chance to explain himself she would be a bit more patient with him.
Quickly, however, Tetsuko began to notice how Jack was acting; his sudden milky-pale face, his troubled breathing, and she softened just a little as she waited for him to calm down. After he had gotten over it, he had apologized, and it seemed to annoy her a bit, uttering a quiet dismissal of it before leaning on her sword.
Eager to change the topic, Jack had asked how she learned her ways behind the sword. She gave him a brief explanation. To her likely surprise, Jack would perk up a bit at the name she had given him. During his many years of seclusion, he had taken the liberty of reading up on various cultures and literature, pretty much ignoring social interactions and focusing entirely on his school work and free time research. He recognized the name from a couple of stories he had read online, so he nodded in understanding. ”Makes sense why you’re so good then, with him as master,” he said, genuine admiration in his voice.
However, she wouldn’t really have much to say after that, as she looked back at him, a look in her eyes that Jack didn’t really recognize at the time. Was she mad at him for his reaction still? Was she about to storm off in disgust at his weakness? Or was she pitying him, like she could see into his past and why he was like this? He shifted a bit uncomfortably, not really knowing what to say at that point.
She then said something that honestly shocked him, at it showed on his face. She told him that it was good that he knew what it was like to be cut.
In a split moment, Jack’s face went from shock, to anger, to anxiety, then back to his unsure look. He didn’t really get a chance to respond, however, as Tetsuko likely realized that her initial statement was a bit too blunt, and continued to state that it helped him prevent such an injury from happening again. She didn’t think he would have been able to dodge the strike at all otherwise.
Jack was silent as she continued, saying that it was none of her business, and that he shouldn’t let the fear rule him. Not that it was particularly easy. She reabsorbed her sword into her body, obviously in thought. Her voice was full of empathy, at it made Jack not as angry at her initial statement. She was just trying to offer him the best advice she could, with her limited knowledge of his past.
It was at that point that Jack felt it was unfair to keep her in the dark. He wasn’t going to go too much into it, of course, but...he would at least give her the general gist behind his actions.
”...You’d be surprised how long I’ve tried to tell myself that…” he started, standing up. His voice lost that timid edge from before, and he spoke clearly, like his more serious side that usually came out in combat was coming out now. He would look her in the eyes for a moment, and then down to the large scar over his heart. ”It’s moreso my fault, anyway. I...I won’t go too much into it for obvious reasons, but…” he started, crossing his arms a bit as he looked up at the sky, his lips pursed as he forced himself to remember all the pain from his childhood.
”When I was younger...before I had even developed my Quirk, I was probably a lot more confident than I am now. I was social, friendly, outgoing...the majority of people liked me, despite coming from a household that most people in the U.S. would be envious of. My parents at least taught me how to not be crude about my heritage.” He would walk around a little, his tail still, simply dragging behind him. He hesitated before continuing, wondering on how he should word the next bit.
”However...one night...burglars struck at my home, and...one of them held me hostage, used me as bait so they could get what they want. They would have killed me anyway, and they almost did….as you can probably tell,” he said, looking once again at the deep scar on his chest. He took a deep breath, trying not to succumb to his emotions, though he was clearly having trouble. His voice cracked as he briefly finished his story. ”Then both a miracle and a curse happened. My Quirk developed, the bad guys were driven off, and then everyone treated me like I was a monster except for my parents for the next ten years. The end.”
He declined to explain how he really felt about all of that, though the bitterness in his tone probably spoke volumes on it’s own. He would gauge her reaction to that, before continuing in a softer tone. ”But...that’s why, when I came of age, I came here. I want to get past that...I want to get over my feelings of people, and I want to help them with the powers that have caused the distrust to begin with. I...I hope that clear things up a little. I’m sorry if I’ve annoyed you with my demeanor.”
He would wait to see what Tetsuko would reply with, and continue on with whatever the conversation would turn into. Afterwards, however, Jack would then step back a little, and get back in a fighting position. ”I need to get stronger...not only to help myself, but to help my friends and the people of the world. That is why I fight...with that in mind, will you allow us to continue? I’ll get past this...that much I promise you.”
He would then simply wait for her reply, in hopes that she would agree and continue the spar. He felt a bit of a light beginning to fill up inside of him, and, unintentionally, red lightning would course around his body, though Jack didn’t really notice it. Hopefully Tetsuko wouldn’t be too weirded out by that, compared to everything else.

It was more than a little awkward, once Tetsuko noticed the position the boy was in after the attack. The signs all pointed to him, in that moment, experiencing something she was a bit too familiar with herself… The breathing, the pale skin… It wasn’t pleasant, she knew that much. His panic attack didn’t exactly leave Tetsuko curious to what caused it, knowing it was his own prerogative to reveal or withhold that information. All she could do was act on what was obvious… That Jack Orion had been cut in the past. That was pushed aside for a moment, in a futile attempt from the other boy to change the topic, as Tetsuko ended up mentioning the master who had trained her.
”I suppose it does make sense.” The Shindou girl uttered in response to Jack’s admiration for her master. He seemed to have martial training, so Tetsuko wasn’t too surprised to find he was aware of one of the bigger names in modern Kenjutsu. Thus, her voice in response carried her usual pride in that fact, yet… With a hint of unease as well. It wasn’t quite as simple as her having been trained by her grandfather, Tetsuko knew that much. There was a certain… Bitterness, to knowing that her mother’s name was not the first she could cite.
The original topic couldn’t be avoided for long, and soon enough Tetsuko had brought it up again in her own rather… Awkward manner. Jack’s initial confused reaction was to be expected, and Tetsuko worried her message may have been muddled by her own poor delivery of it, but ultimately she’d said what she thought would help, and hopefully that would be enough. Tetsuko expected some kind of response to her words, yet what she got… Well, was more than she bargained for, one could say.
Certainly not expecting the sudden backstory speech, Tetsuko remained wide-eyed and restless as Jack spoke on about his past. So, he’d not always been this way, and instead had developed his current manner following an attack on his home… Burglars, villains, ruining another life like that. It hit a little close to him for Tetsuko. This was some strange territory she’d ended up wandering into, Tetsuko unable to look Jack fully in the eye as he spoke. Was she wrong to have brought this up? This past of his, the story behind his wounds? The ironblooded girl listened nonetheless, nodding along and trying to remain attentive, even as he revealed his monstrous personal view.
Tetsuko, for a moment, wanted to offer him sympathy. But as he spoke on, she realized that would be pointless. He already wanted to enact change, and that was why he’d come here. His demeanour still annoyed Tetsuko in some ways, but she supposed she’d have to help in making sure he could reign himself in in that regard. In the manner that say desperately wanted to prove himself. ”It’s fine.” Tetsuko would utter again, still unsure how to react. ”Your past isn’t my business, as I said. If you work to change, then it’s no problem.”
The remaining awkwardness Tetsuko felt, however, would fade as Jack assumed a fighting stance. Seemed he still had some fight in him, promising Tetsuko he’d get stronger. The Shindou girl scoffed to herself, withdrawing the iron of her blade back into her body as she turned to face him, paying little mind to what she showed. ”You are no dragon, Jack Orion. Not yet, anyway.” Tetsuko uttered suddenly.
”Luckily, I can help you become a real one, if fighting is how you’ll do it…” Fighting was perhaps the language Tetsuko spoke best, after all. ”Your past is nothing, promises you make to me are nothing. Promise yourself you’ll get stronger, then let me do my part. I can’t help you in any other way, than to teach you, and stand before you.” Iron sprouted from her palm again, forming into her usual katana. Her ‘Yukifuri’.
”Don’t think your struggles are any different to those around you. You fight the same challenges. You have to overcome them.” Spurred on by the desire to strengthen her opponent through combat, Tetsuko was speaking much more naturally now. ”It’s a high wall to scale, so let me give you a taste. But no matter how high it is…” Tetsuko gripped her blade tightly, assuming a fighting stance again. It was clear that this time, she wasn’t just testing a new blade. She was willing to pit her all against the boy, no matter how excessive that might be.
”Don’t be discouraged!”
A warrior’s pride meant a lot to Tetsuko Shindou. So she intended on fighting with all of hers against the wannabe dragon. He’d a long way to go, and she hoped to help him along, to show him the hurdles all those above him had overcome… He was no further behind, no more disadvantaged.
They all had a wall to scale, she intended on showing him just how challenging it could be.
