APPEARANCE AND PERSONALITY
Appearance:
Naoru can not quite be called ordinary, which is the fault of his mutation quirk. He has an average height and average build that doesn’t stand out in a crowd much. His pale skin and almond-shaped eyes are the only things showing his Japanese ethnicity. He kept his hair longer than necessary out of habit to hide his feathers, but they tend to grow out under his hairline. Nowadays, he lets his feathers shown. His sister loved, and sometimes still loves to play with his hair, adorning it full of hairclips and bands for fun. And as a well-behaving older brother, of course he would let her do that.
As for his clothing choices, he likes to dress elegant but casual, which is a weird mix but he found it to be the most fitting for him. Button-up shirts, vests and blazers are all parts of who he is, but he has a good number of hoodies to wrap himself in as well. He likes to be more casual during summer heat; no elegant shirt can make up for the sweating he has to endure. The only thing he always likes to have on him, whether be it scorching summer or freezing winter are a pair of gloves to avoid accidental skin-to-skin contact with other people. He also has a full arm glove he wears to cover his left arm when in sleeveless shirts.
Due to having a mutation type Quirk, even though it mostly changes his nerves and brain, his body is altered in visible ways as well. His pale skin and hair color is one part of it, and the red eyes he bears is another. He usually hides them by wearing colored contacts, either gray ones, or other pale colors. The stigma on the left part of his face forms an inversed pentaculum over his eye, and a set of crossed lines under it. Commonly, the aura manipulators in his family have horns and feathers growing on their heads. Naoru has no visible horn, but there is soft plume under his hairline. People might notice him leaving tiny feathers here and there in hot weather as he, well, molts.
He lost his left arm, and now it is replaced by the Aura he generates. It has an angry dark color by default, and is connected to his skin by a pattern of swirls and thorns. As his control over his Aura expanded, he is able to change it to a softer white that is closer to his original skin color. The finger joints are visible, and the hand is only barely similar to a normal human's.

Personality:
Naoru is the kind of guy that most people would feel comfortable to talk to, but no one would feel the need to care about. He is polite and benevolent, but barely leaves much impact on anyone’s memory after a first meeting. He is generally withdrawn and keeps to himself, always diverting the conversation when it would be time to talk about him. As someone with an almost nonexistent self-esteem, it’s not surprising he would rather want to do anything but be in the spotlight. He tends not to show extreme emotions, and he appears to be always content, constantly having a faint smile to mask any and all other emotion that would threaten to bubble up.
His politeness is often too much, sometimes it seems to be more of a necessity than actual good-will (though it is just his kindness showing), and also just another way to keep the comfortable distance from others. He prefers to focus on the person he converses with. It seems as if he always has something on his mind, like he is overthinking everything, being distracted by the smallest of occurrences (even though he always observes). He loses track of himself and his though process often, and he feels as if he isn’t at the right place, or not in the right body. It is a strange feeling, but he refuses to let it affect him, or show it outward. He would often hide away from people until it feels he is alright, when he has recharged, and can go out into the world again, like a true introvert. He loves to hang out with people, but there is always a point when he reaches his limit.
His unease of physical contact is just another thing that would keep people at a distance. He wasn’t exactly sure when it started, but it is mostly due to his quirk that touching anyone, or receiving contact would make him jump and flinch away. He tends to mask the reaction with a smile so not to alarm anyone of it, but it is just another thing that shies people away. As if he doesn’t desire contact, as if just being near would make him feel disgusted, when it is anything but. He can’t change the mind of people though, so unless he sucks it up and bears with the contact, he feels he wouldn’t be able to be accepted.
He is always curious about others’ well-being, and is usually rather pushy when it comes to getting answers. While he sees no reason for others to care about him, he can care greatly and gravely. Even if he can not get answers, he would do his best to make the suffering party comfortable, either distracting them with talking about mundane things or inviting them to a little game of cards. Coaxing others to ease up and accept his help is something he is used to, and he would not let them go without proper care. Even if he can not help, he would at least want to see his friends when he knows they are suffering. It is as if he has an imaginary roster in his mind, and he could not rest until all of his acquaintances are checked as healthy. He has a feeling caring is what would bring his demise, but he can’t quite acknowledge that yet.
His curiosity goes beyond. He likes to know how certain things work, so even if it is just to figure out the mechanic behind a simple concept like an emitter quirk, he would dive into the unknown to figure it all out. Rather than seeing the result, he loves going through the process of thinking up possibilities. Give him something to work on, and once you see him raise his hand to his chin, he is lost in thought. Another reason for this might be that he is actually afraid of the unknown. He dislikes unpredictable things, or at least those that he can not predict. Not being aware of anything scares him, like he is afraid of what lurks beneath the surface of the ocean.
As opposed to his politeness, he has zero tolerance for nonsense. He can get sarcastic and cynical when he hears something extraordinarily dumb, and will not hold back his snarky comments either. God save us from the nice guy who gets fed up with stupidity, but at least that might prove he has some fire and humor to his personality. Might. People who show care toward him, or praise him might get the same treatment. Strangely enough, rather than being embarrassed (though that can happen too), he will just get angry and make a fuss whenever one of his positive aspects is pointed out loud. He can also be surprisingly witty when he tries to get people to do what he wants.
He allows himself more sarcastic comments and some fun when he is around people he feels comfortable with. Good friends will notice that he gets less and less polite, more direct, and in turn, less and less cold socially. There were occasions when he was even said to be smooth, replying in a manner that told he would be a real ladies man if he had any confidence to back up his thoughts. He gets flustered by the most ridiculous things, and that is truly a sight to behold. If anyone realized he kept and treasured the hairclips his sister put in his hair when they were little, he would hide away from the world forever.

HISTORY
Both the Kikami and Kehai families held tradition in high regards, and would abide by it whenever possible. That meant they weren’t accepting of change, and in turn, weren’t accepting of Quirkers in general. While the Kikami family thought the Quirkers to be interesting enough, they were harboring heavy prejudice against them. None of their members have developed any visible quirks, while a few of the Kehai family gained really small mutations. They kept the good relations, but it was obvious that older members of the Kikami family didn’t like the idea of their youngest son marrying a Quirker. However, the marriage went through, and they were expecting their first child.
Naoru was born to a quirkless father and a mother with feathery hair and the ability of aura manipulation. Naoru himself didn’t show signs of any quirk until the age of four, when his mutation showed its visible features. His feathers were the first to show, right under his hairline, hidden from view. His mother tried to hide it from the rest of the family, but once his left eye deformed followed by the right one, and the stigma over it showed, there was no way they could hide it from the grandparents anymore. Once they saw, they already declared the kid a useless member of society, as they were sure the “sickness” of the Quirk was degrading enough that he won’t be able to do anything in his life. People would be prejudiced against him, he wouldn’t be able to find friends, partners, and a job. That was what he kept hearing from his grandparents all through his childhood, and even later through his teen years.
With the failure of the oldest grandchild, the grandparents demanded more children from the parents as “compensation”. They obliged, and Naoru got a brother five years younger, and a sister seven years younger than him. The hope of the grandparents were never realized, as all of the siblings showed similar mutations and the ability to manipulate the aura their body generates, although in completely different ways.
As they couldn’t get what they wanted from the children, the grandparents refused to let them have the Kikami name. Hence, all of them gained their mother’s family name, and have been living with that ever since then. Their father – a scientist of genetics and biology – was the most devastated by his own ascendant’s views. He wanted to prove that despite the news and the media coverage, Quirkers weren’t at all bad people. He would start by proving that his own children were great, not at all hindered by their mutation in body and mind.
The father took them to specialists who studied their brainwaves and special auras. They only did simple tests and some training regiments to show a completely healthy mind and body. But one scientist in particular was especially keen on turning the tests more serious, saying that Quirkers should be considered monsters rather than people, and would be able to take more. As the oldest, Naoru would have been subjected to the scientist’s ideas more often than the younger ones. The tests were quickly stopped, the scientist was tried in court and convicted. That, doubled with the minor bullying they suffered due to their mutation in school had a negative effect on Naoru and his siblings.
The parents wanted to take the mind of the children off of whatever that happened before, so they set up a lot of activities for them as distractions. The family went to trips and picnics out often, even tried hiking too. Naoru had taken a liking to rock-climbing himself, and often enough went out with his mother to the mountains ever since he was thirteen.
As it turned out, the children’s mutations were also harmful to their mental health, so they became regular customers to the psychiatric ward of the city’s hospital. Naoru became especially protective of his younger siblings after that, and rarely let them go only with their parents to their appointments. In a weird way, being the oldest, he felt the responsibility of not meeting the expectations of so many people. Maybe he could lessen the burden on his younger siblings by being better, but that seemed to be a useless dream. His grandparents never became more accepting of their grandchildren and Quirkers in general.
Slowly, gradually, Naoru developed a hate for hospitals and doctors for the amount of time they spent with scientists. It all became worse after a hiking accident on an especially wild area with an even wilder rogue Quirker. In the accident, Naoru’s left arm was too damaged to be saved, and his mother suffered a head trauma that put her into a coma. Barely a sixteen years old boy, Naoru was wildly refusing the treatment in a paranoid fear, and tried to escape the ward on several occasions. He thought his family was in constant danger from something unknown, and he wouldn’t want to stay away from them in the hospital to try and recover. And even when he couldn’t escape the building, he would rather hide in the room of his comatose mother. As his Aura slowly took the form of his missing left arm and replaced it, even the doctors decided to be more lenient with him.
It was not long after when the news of a hero school opening its gates took the masses by surprise. Naoru could almost sense the mix of excitement and dread in his family. While his siblings and his father was looking forward to the hope such a school would bring, his grandparents were anything but content. However, they did see an opportunity, like in everything, if for more information on the nature of quirks.
Naoru’s father saw a completely different possibility in the school. He urged his oldest son to enroll as a student and learn to better control his abilities to later on help society become a better place for both the Quirkers and the Quirkless. Naoru wasn’t sure it would be the best place for him, but his grandparents would not expect more from him anyway. Maybe it is possible to prove them wrong on how useless and dangerous Quirkers could be...Maybe Naoru could show his worth.
