Shiko was never really a fighter, or at least she never really thought she was. Daddy's little girl was never to be hurt after all. 'Too fragile,' her parents would always tell her. But, now that she was here, that didn't matter anymore. All that stood now was that she was a girl trying to become a hero who didn't know how to fight worth a damn. She needed to change that. Heroes had to be able to fight like the vigilantes on TV, right?
She had merely been wasting time on the Yuuei chat room before bed when she had seen a conversation between a couple of guys that she didn't know. One of them had been Darren, the other she couldn't be bothered to remember the name of for now. Perhaps it had been her brain demanding sleep, but she suddenly had the idea to join him. Didn't exactly go the way her groggy self thought it would, but she and some other girl named Arisu got roped into...
Shiko squinted as she looked at the message. Are we really going to be fighting this guy? She couldn't decide how bad of an idea this was going to be. Was he going to actually train the both of them or was he just going to give them some pointers? Shiko was pretty certain that she would need more than just a few pointers.
Shiko lightly bit the inside of her cheek. Where the hell is this guy anyway? All she had been told was that she was supposed to make her way towards the training fields. She assumed that the guy would meet her somewhere in the middle. Obviously, that wasn't going to be the case.
The girl tugged at the athletic outfit provided by the school. Weren't these things supposed to better for athletic activity? In a way, she was glad that they were a little baggier on her than she expected. She wore her hoody on top of it all. She pulled it tighter as the wind picked up. She threw the hood over her head to protect her ears.
As she continued walking, the wind would soon die down, leaving for a moment of eerie silence. She heard an odd sound pierce the quiet. A percussive beat in the distance. How had she not noticed it before? That must be Darren-senpai. Indeed, it must have been a simple lack of attention, but she could see him now. She walked towards the space that he must have been talking about in the chatroom.
"Darren-san! It's me! Shiko! Hey!" The girl stretched her arm up and waved, almost seeming to pull her body up as she made the motion.

--- arisu --- - Test Drive -
Moment of truth.
It had taken a lot of soul searching and an unreasonable amount of personal anguish to come to the place Arisu needed to be in order to allow her to turn her quirk loose on people. She'd tried objects before, but that had reinforced her reluctance at first- after all, if her flames, strange and cold as they were, left stone brittle as spun sugar, what would it do to living things? Would it consume the fabric of their being the same way it unraveled the molecular lattices granting stone and wood their rigidity? Would it leave people- rusting? She didn't think she wanted to see a person rust, but as it happened, she didn't need to- living things, as it turned out, had ample amounts of energy simply by virtue of being alive, and that was what her flames consumed, instead of molecular bonds. At least, that was her theory on why she didn't leave living things the same sorts of crumpled, wrecked ruins that nonliving targets became. Everyone she'd exposed to Antipyre swore up and down they were fine afterwards, that it hadn't even actually hurt in the moment, just felt cold and exhaustive.
So, when she'd seen Darren offer to give two of the newer first years- what she'd decided to call PhoSFers, on account of them arriving Post Semper Fi and her internal determination to make up an interesting name to go with it- a two on one brawl to help accommodate them to the challenge of facing a superior foe, she'd volunteered. She was increasingly aware of just how deep the rift between the incoming students and those who had literally weathered gunfire in their pursuit of heroism and education, and rather than be daunted into submission, her response was reversed- she was determined to overcome that rift in experience through each and every harrowing lesson her body could bear to endure. She trusted Darren to keep them on their toes, too- they wouldn't be mollycoddled in the slightest by the boy who felt anyone who hadn't been shot at was too soft to truly be part of the first crop of Yuuei students. She trusted his judgment, his skills, and his teaching ability- even if his methods were harsh and his words, as well.
She arrived dressed much as Shiko did, with a small change- boxer's tape around her hands, and the sleeves shoved up above her elbows. She needed the skin exposed, and as much as she wanted to hide the visible effects of her quirk affecting her body, she couldn't afford to keep her arms covered with her hands taped. The glands that expelled Antipyre were located in her arms, after all, and unless she was willing to disintegrate her own clothing to fire her quirk, she had to do what needed done- keep the skin exposed from the get-go. It was cold outside, but that wouldn't be a problem once they got started.
Shiko was already raising her voice to greet Darren- someone she had the fair fortune to have met before this, and recognized on sight- as she arrived, and she raised her hand in greeting as she jogged up behind Shiko, coming to a stop and offering one of her taped hands as a greeting. "Hey! Arisu Disukodo. Shiko, right? I'm really glad to get to meet you in person. You really are made of paper... that's awesome!!" She paused a moment, then leaned in to whisper, "Don't be scared of my quirk- it's not really fire. It'll just make you tired if it hits you, but I promise I'll make sure that doesn't happen." With what she hoped was a reassuring little tidbit to her friend from the chat room, she turned back towards Darren and beamed. "So! How do you want to do this, Daimon-senpai?"

Poum, poum, poum, poum. A soft, regular pouding could be faintly heard by students walking by the outdoor training fields. If they paid attention, they would notice someone doing something that he and his team were supposed to have an entire field dedicated for: Darren juggling with a football, and as was proper of football juggles, did so with the foot -- everyone knew only the goalkeeper was allowed to handle the ball in football.
There was a reason Darren was practicing his juggles in the middle of the training fields normally dedicated to combat, and that was because he was trying out a new technique. And to do so, he had invited two newbies -- he called any post Semper Fi arrival newbies -- for a 2v1. It spoke volumes of his confidence that he would try out a new technique in such conditions. He’d answer, somewhat frighteningly, that he needed more targets.
The first arrival was a girl wielding the terrifying power of paper cuts, from what he gathered from the school chat. She waved at him and introduced herself. It looked oddly like someone was turning the page of a book back and forth. He didn’t knew much about her or what she could do, and as such he was curious to see what she had in store.
The second arrival came in quickly as well: Discord Girl -- or such was the nickname he gave her, amused by the pronunciation of her last name. She was bubbly as ever, giving away an important piece of information about her quirk right in front of her opponent. Her he knew she could box decently well already.
“Sup,” he simply answered the both of them, still juggling his ball. He had not dropped it so far. “How we’ll do this is very simple. Stand on each end of the field, I’m already in the middle.” Poum, poum. The ball kept going up and down steadily, casually kicked back up every time. “Come on, don’t just stand there! I ain’t clowning on y’all. You’ll see when we begin, promise.” He spat on the floor -- the delinquent version of a pinkie promise. Once both girls were in position, he’d kick the ball one last time, much higher this time, way above his head. “Okay, go!!”
Not losing a second, the blue sparks of Autokinesis crackled on his body and he was off, leaping into the air above him. The ball was going down already. It felt past his head and his chest as he readied a kick, and with another burst of the delinquent’s quirk, whipped it into the ball, aiming the shot at Arisu’s head.
Or at least it was his intention. He miscued it, badly, hitting the bottom part of the ball, which cause it to sail off in a weak, harmless arc -- extraordinarily, it was still going straight for Arisu’s head, albeit with no power behind it whatsoever. The disheartened delinquent fell down on the ground as well, landing on both feet with another activation of his quirk, staring with puppy eyes at his terrible shot. Seems like his new technique would require some more practice.
As a result, while he was facing Discord Girl, he had his back completely turned away from Papercut Girl; ripe for a pincer attack. Perhaps it was the girl’s chance to punish their senpai for his disrespectful cockiness. Perhaps.
The smile that was drawing itself on his lips might indicate otherwise to the prudent soul, but who ever achieved anything by being prudent?

Perhaps she didn't have the same sense of urgency as the others that were attending this little foray, for she was at a mere walk as Arisu approached from behind. The only forewarning that she had was the sound of shifting grass as Arisu was maybe only a step away. In any sense, she would not notice the girl until she was taken by surprise. When the firm hand of Arisu clasped her shoulder, Shiko would suddenly tense up for a moment, her head jerking around to meet Arisu eye to eye.
Shiko opened her mouth to respond to the girl's greeting, but she wouldn't even get to make a sound before Arisu point out the fact that she was made of paper. "I uhh-." Her protest was quiet, but Arisu would get to continue. She leaned in and whispered something about her quirk. Shiko furrowed her brow. Not really...fire? What was that supposed to mean. On that note, was she supposed to know about the other's quirks? If the girl had said something in the chatroom, Shiko had never bothered looking for it. In fact, she never cared to ask in the first place. Shiko swallowed what felt like a lump in her throat.
"Uhhh... Nice to meet you, too? Arisu?" The hand on her shoulder felt strong, more akin to a grown man than the girl that had stood behind her. She obviously had at least some training before this. She had to question herself in her mind again. Was she supposed to have some kind of training before now? If she had the blood to do it she would have blushed in embarrassment. The feeling of inadequacy rose in her stomach. Should she have really been doing this?
Shiko suddenly realized that she had stopped where she had stood, the other girl having passed her now, but only for a moment- Darren's return greeting having pulled her out of the little trance- she restarted her approach towards the boy. The guy's face was new to her to say the least, and that wasn't really a surprise, she didn't really know many other people on campus that well. Arisu seemed to at least know him on a first-name basis. Or was it that he used his first name on the chatroom like she did? Should she be calling him Daimon? What a strange name.
Darren got straight to the point, no introductions or anything. Shiko bit the inside of her cheek. How rude could this guy be?! Thought she would be lying if she didn't say that she was impressed that he never once stopped juggling the football. In fact, she could probably safely claim that the guy was paying more attention to the ball than he was to either of them. "Wait, that's it? Isn't there anything else that you should tell us before we get st-"
Her question was just met with another retort from the guy, punctuated by spit on the ground. Shiko looked over to Arisu in a manner that conveyed something along the lines of 'really?' before she would look to the other side of the rather large field. If Arisu wasn't going to take it, she would; Shiko jogged her way over to the other end of the field.
From here- granted that she could see Arisu well- she would try to adopt a similar stance to the girl if Arisu bothered to do so and readied herself for... anything really. She had no idea how this guy would start the whole shebang!
And start it he would! When he kicked the ball into the air, Shiko assumed that he would be waiting for it to fall, kinda like the ref's gun at a track meet or something, but she was wrong! Right after he leaped into the air with impressive force to Shiko's surprise! What was he going to do with that thing. Wait is he going to somehow send that thing towards me?! Shiko crossed her arms in front of her face, expecting him to somehow turn the ball around and spike it at her, but it would never come. She opened her eyes to the sound of a forceful poum as the ball lazily bounced towards Arisu.
Was that it? She had to mentally remind herself that she was supposed to be fighting this guy, She started running forward, her steps light. Alright how do I do this? It looked like Darren liked to use his legs. Doesn't look like he's paid attention to me. This should be a piece of cake! Honestly, though, the hardest part about getting the piece of cake would be actually getting to the cake in the first place. She would have to get rather close, about three meters before she would be able to do anything too useful, but as soon as she did, the girl would unfold her arm as much as she could, stretching it about three meters, towards Darren's leg. If she could even get a hold of it, the unfolded hand would encase quite a bit of his calf before Shiko would pull back as hard as she could, attempting to trip Darren, hoping to leave him open to another attack. If she whiffed she would try to refold her arm back to its normal form as quickly as she could!

--- arisu --- - WAIT WHO'S THE REFEREE - Arisu picked up the sound of the bouncing ball before she really even had a chance to make her introduction to Shiko. It was odd, sure, but then- Kirk strapped all manner of sports equipment to himself, so perhaps Darren was taking a page from the other student's book today. Maybe she and Shiko weren't the only one's testing their limits! That was certainly an encouraging thought. Everything she'd seen and heard about Darren thus far emphasized just how far beyond her own experience the boy was. Something, anything, tying his own progress a little nearer to her own was humanizing, put him that little bit nearer to something she could maybe attain herself one day. It'd have been easy to just write off the gap between them as insurmountable, but one day- maybe- she'd be able to stand up to him. Or beside him, as the case might be. Either would make her proud. Shiko seemed too startled by everything, by how fast things were going, to really return much of an introduction, but that was alright so far as she was concerned. In short order, they'd been directed to opposite ends of the field, which Arisu was all too keen to acquiesce to. Retreating as directed, she turned back, and, as Shiko reached her position at the opposing side of the field...
Darren didn't waste a moment. The ball skyrocketed, and in a brief moment, so too did Darren himself, signalling the start of the fight. With nothing else stated, everything seemed to be on the table, and Arisu immediately flexed the specialized muscles in her arms surrounding her quirk organs. Black flame poured out around both limbs, drenching them in the cold, dark fire before quickly condensing around her fists as she began to move, both arms lifted in a boxer's guard, elbows tight to her sides. She ran towards his initial position- not sprinting, not wasting the energy to go absolutely pedal to the metal, but running all the same, eyes on Darren, and the ball which seemed so strangely integral to his plans. The focus she shared on the ball paid off, as he put a significant flare of energy into a kick that sent the ball careening towards her head. To Darren, perhaps it lacked energy for want of cannonball-like speeds, but to Arisu it was plenty fast and more than concerning enough to be worried. She tracked it visually, dropping her guard at the second to last second to draw back one arm and slash it inwards in a curve, smashing the football to the side with a hook without stopping. Had it held the speed Darren gave it for those first few meters, she wouldn't have been able to react, but as slowed as it was once it finally reached her, it made an easy target- and, depending on how sturdy the football was, perhaps a fragile one. One thumb flicked back out of the flames to graze her chin out of sheer muscle memory as she reclaimed her guard and kept moving to close the distance. As she closed to within ten meters, she caught sight of Shiko unravelling and reaching towards Darren. Abruptly, she threw a trio of jabs at long distance, sending triplet Antipyre comets racing towards Darren. The first two were off center and would splash down to either side. The third was on point, but at the edge of her range and likely to strike his midsection if he did nothing. It'd take little more than a rapid jolt backwards to avoid that one- lazy dodges to either side might put him into the line of fire of one of the first two shots... but that lunge backwards might drop him firmly into Shiko's grasp! There were other ways to avoid the shots, especially to someone so mobile, but as a dual-purpose feint to drive him back into what she hoped was an unseen attack or to perhaps trap him in the line of her own, it wasn't too bad so far as tactical assault went!

Alright, Darren. A good striker forgets all about his bad shots to concentrate on the game-winning screamer. Don’t let it get to you, he thought watching his ball fall down onto Discord Girl. And then she hooked it away. “Hey! My ball!” shouted the delinquent, watching it bounce desperately away from him. The boxer girl might have noticed while hitting it, but it was at least twice as heavy as a regular football and much sturdier, so it only stopped rolling away about a dozen meter or so. He duly noted it with a sideways glance, and then felt something coiling around his leg. It was an odd sensation, as if someone was trying to wrap his calf like a present. He looked over his shoulder to see the paper girl had deployed her hand like a grappling hook to get a hold of him. Not a bad idea to try to pin down the speedster. “Alright, I’ll play ball,” he joked, definitely taking a page out of Kirk’s book today. “Let’s say I’m rooted for three seconds.” He got his eyes back up front and saw Arisu throwing a series of fireball-shooting jabs at him. Right, just like she showed in the boxing exercise, the dark flame things around her hands. Apparently she could shoot it too, and she was doing just so. “Alright, and here’s Discord Girl,” he grinned. He was never gonna stop calling her that now, and just like he counted on the media picking up on Evian Girl with Melody, fully intended to spread it as much as possible and have it pop up as one of her listed aliases on HeroWiki. Being a hero wasn’t stopping him from his football side-hustle OR from upholding his reputation as a master shitposter, able to transpose the century-long tradition of Australian shitposting into real life. And giving his classmates stupid nicknames for the media to pick up on was just the first step in his master plan. Anyway, for now, there were three black flames flying at his ass, but he wasn’t too concerned. He did say he was routed for a couple seconds, though, so he weaved his upper body out of the way of the first two attacks and slapped away the last one with a back-handed strike, thrown with unnatural motion and speed in a bluish blur -- the signature broken mannequin movement of Autokinesis. Strangely, it didn't hurt. It did make his hand feel numb and sluggish all of a sudden, however. He frowned and glanced at hand. Something else was up with these black flames, so he figured he better start putting on a show of his quirk’s maneuverability, and for that, he was gonna have to address the paper girl’s attack first. It was a good effort, but it was time to show it would take more than a good effort to pin down the senpais in your first month. He glanced at Shiko one last time as a warning, with a devil’s smile on his lips as the leg she was grabbing sparked blue while he stomped his free one on the ground with power. Off that motion, he threw his right one is what was essentially a kicking motion into empty air with all his strength behind it. Should she keep hold of his ankle, he would attempt to swing Shiko like the spiked-ball end of a flail with Arisu as his designated volunteer for a target. Should she have the presence of mind to let go, then he’d be free and proceed to immediately dash for his ball, leaving behind a trail of blue sparks as he sprinted towards it helped by his quirk, stepped on it and turn around to face his targets in one smooth motion. And then, he’d simply knock it towards Arisu with the point of his toes and immediately dash behind it again, landing into shooting position in a shower of blue sparks, five meters from the girl who was decidedly his designated target today and shoot it. This time, from the ground, in his range and taking his time to adjust the shot, he’d manage to get it where he wanted, which was flying towards Arisu’s head. As long as she wasn’t more than five meters away-- that was the maximum range at which he managed to hit the skeet targets in training. Yes, this very much looked like he was clowning, and in some respects, he was, but it wouldn’t be good training for anybody if he just trashed the newbies at full strength. So for this match, his objective was to win without resorting to hand to hand combat; and given that he was the president of the martial arts club, it was easy to guess that his area of expertise wasn’t exactly long-range fighting. For that purpose, he developed through his hobby a style that would allow him to use his power at range, diversifying his options for when close quarters combat wasn’t practical. Eventually, his aim was to be able to throw powerful and accurate volley shots in a snapshot from any angle, thanks to his quirk and his experience as a striker for the school team. However, using it in combat while dodging enemy attacks was another challenge entirely, and this time, he had only been able to put about half his strength behind his attack. Whatever counterattacks they would deploy he’d improvise against; for now, he was concentrated on shooting. (ooc summary: got grabbed by Shiko, dodged Arisu’s first 2 flames by leaning, blocked the third, got exhaustion damage on top of the regular damage. after that, threw a powerful kick at nothing with the leg being grabbed on to force his way out of the grab, dashed for the ball with quirk, turned back with quirk to immediately shoot the ball towards Arisu’s head once within range, at only half strength however)

A smug smirk formed on Shiko's face. She did it! Now all she had to do was reel the fish in! Taking a few steps back, the arm grabbing the boy being left facing towards him, she would jerk back her arm in an attempt to throw her shoulder back as the angler would when a fish caught on to his bait.
However, she would find bringing her prey in proved more difficult than she had expected! Rather than easily tripping the guy like she thought she would she felt like she was trying to pull out her own shoulder! She gave it a few more listless pulls before the guy looked back and gave her a glare. If her face could have done so, the color in her face would have gone pale. Her face shifted into a smile of embarrassment and a dash of disbelief.
Three seconds. Just his words made it obvious that her effort was for naught. Shiko grit her teeth. One. What was she going to do once that time was up? Two. Darren casually dismissed burning flames that hurdled towards him without even recoiling. How is that even possible?! For a moment, Shiko recalled a time when she was a younger child. Growing curious as she did she put her finger to a candle, the digit catching aflame. The doctor said that she was lucky she came out of it with all ten of her fingers. Darren looked back at her one last time, a wicked smile parsing his lips. She could tell it was a warning. She knew that she should have let go that instant, but, for some reason, she couldn't. The girl clenched her own teeth and angled her face down just enough that she was left looking 'up' to meet Darren's own glance. One.
Perhaps it was more like the inexperienced angler who suddenly found that he had caught on to a true monster of the salty depths, and, with grim determination and foolish pride, fought against the beast even as it threatened to throw him into the brine, so did Shiko keep her arm wrapped around Darren's leg as he swung her about. She, of course, immediately regretted this decision. Darren's powerful throw was enough to lift the girl off the ground, keeping her only mere inches above it, though, this would quickly raise to about half a meter. "AARRRRIIII!"
While she might have been plenty book smart, it would probably to both of the others that her battle sense was quite lacking. Regardless, she needed to cut the line on this one. There was no way that she was strong enough to win such a scuffle with Darren, not yet. As quickly as she could, the girl unravelled her hand from the boy's leg and began to fold it back into the proper shape of her arm, She hoped that she was fast enough, rather skidding along the ground rather than into the girl that she was supposed to be working with.
Assuming that Darren still went for the ball, and under the good luck- or perhaps not so good- that she was close to Arisu, she would give a quick smile to boxer girl. "Sorry!" When it became evident that Darren was aiming the ball towards Arisu, Shiko would attempt to spread out both of her arms, creating a crude shield. The pain would, of course, be even more surprisingly painful. Painful enough that she would squeeze her eyes shut, biting her lip to stifle it. Unless it simply bounced away too quickly, she would attempt enclose the ball within her arm. Whether or not this would be a mistake, she did not know.

--- arisu --- - Wait Is It Too Late To Sub Out - Darren's easy play at being "trapped" started off offensive, but, in the instants to come, shifted gears in Arisu's head. This was a training exercise, after all, and he was doing what he could to keep things in a realm where it wasn't a total stampede. She nodded, once, in quiet thanks for his game adjustment, and smirked to herself when his hand went cold and numb after contact. Even so, it was utterly unexpected to have Shiko launched at her like one of those super old balls-on-a-stick-on-an-ankle-hoop dealies, and it was all she could do to crouch and help catch the girl as she rolled and tumbled thanks to her premature release. In violently short order, though, Darren was on the ball again and launching it at them like a cannon. Shiko had a quick response, but Arisu saw another window- a moment where Darren couldn't see them and might not hear them too well. "Shiko-san," she murmured rapidly into the paper girl's ear. "His shot lost momentum only a few meters out when he was up in the sky. Until he shows us otherwise, let's see if that's one of his other "rules" for this engagement. Try to stay at the edge of your reach and pummel him any way you can. I think that's too far for his shots to shoot. Let me see if I can punish him for going after the ball." She broke from behind Shi-kover in short order, bolting towards where the ball had bounced and booting it a good seven, eight yards down the field back towards Darren. Her hands flared as she did, and she launched another trio of shadowboxing jabs, tracing the ball's path down the field. As the ball rolled to a stop, she clapped her hands together in a broad, exaggerated moment, and froze the black spheres of flame overtop the ball in a rough triangle, then lifted a hand and started to make a wide, lasso-ing motion, stirring the spheres into movement in a relatively slow spin around the ball's location. Darren could probably find any number of clever ways to nick the ball from inside their circling, but he couldn't just dash up and boot it without being in their danger zone, and that, it seemed, was Arisu's next ploy- if he stepped into that ring without leaving it faster than she could react, she had every intention of slamming all three floating balls of Antipyre into the talented fighter the moment her reflexes allowed!
Shiko and I have both opted to submit this thread as incomplete.
