An Impromptu Study Session (@eris ) Thumbing the button on her phone to lock it, Rimma stuffed it into her coat pocket. Having just arranged to meet up with Arisu, a recent addition to the school that was even newer than herself, changed course to head back to the girl's dorm. Walking at a brisk pace so as not to keep the other girl waiting, Rimma was quick to enter her room on the second floor and retrieve a few textbooks, notebooks, pens and pencils - she did not know if Arisu would have or think to bring her own, and it would be better to err on the side of caution by bringing extra anyways.
Stuffing the writing tools in a pocket, the bundled up red-head tucked the books all together under one arm before heading out once more. This time, back towards the main building and to the library. As she hurried along, each breath would come out in cold puffs of air accompanied by tiny particles of snow and frost.
So, a few minutes after agreeing to meet up with Arisu for a study session, Rimma strode in through the library doors. As always, she had her knitted white cap on her head and her fluffy white scarf around her neck. Her long red hair was left to drape freely across her shoulders and down her back, and the numerous layers of coats she was wearing left her somewhat resembling a marshmallow.
Gray-blue eyes swept across the mildly occupied library in search for the face she had been shown over the chatroom. If Arisu was already present, she would eventually spot her and stride over with a welcoming "Zdrastvooyte, Arisu!" and offer a polite incline of her head in a slight bow. However, if the other girl was nowhere to be found yet, Rimma would simply move over to a table to set her things out and await the other girl's arrival.

--- ARISU --- -better than watching paint dry- With nothing else to do, Arisu had immediately headed towards the library after coordinating with Rimma. She'd brough some dalmation notebooks and mechanical pencils, just to be prepared, and already had them set out and waiting. She herself, though, was lost in her phone, scrolling through articles and videos from the recent incident. Truth told, there was so much material it was overwhelming, not to mention entirely outside of the realm of her usual internet wanderings. She had no time to watch television, and up until recently hadn't had any friends in the area, so her exposure to this had been minimal prior to now, and she still didn't feel like she had a firm grasp on just how bad things had gotten.
About the time that Rimma arrived, Arisu set her phone down and rubbed at her temples with one hand, face half-hidden by the gesture. Though she was still struggling to assimilate more of the facts of the matter, she was very distinctly disturbed by even the blanket facts of what she'd read. She wasn't entirely sure she wanted to broach the subject in person with Rimma- or anyone else, come to think of it- until she had a more comprehensive understanding of the events and their implications. So, when she realized Rimma was closing in, she wiped the stress off her face- and the articles off her phone- with a goofy grin and lifted a hand to wave energetically, engaging the same time-tested responses she used to seem bouncy and cheerful despite the faint gloom and chill that persisted in her presence.
"Ohayooooo, Rimma-chaaaan!" She stage-whispered, this being a library but wanting to express her exuberance regardless. "Come, sit, I have a spot saved for you. What are we working on? Is our teacher awesome? Is it the physics of leaping from roof to roof? A thesis on the best ways to dismantle villainized mecha? What sort of exciting lesson are we investigating?" She looked just like her picture, but quite a lot more energetic than the reserved school selfie had suggested.

Learning To Work By The Book As Arisu greeted her in turn, Rimma was briefly taken by surprise at the enthusiasm and bubbly demeanor - but not in a bad way. It was more that the other girl's picture had been fairly reserved and ordinary, though on reflection she supposed that was only to be expected of a still photograph, and her manner of typing had struck her as more low-energy. Her surprise was only really visible for a moment, gray-blue eyes widening before she regained her composure and her expression settled into a light smile as she listened to the other girl's rapid series of questions.
Bringing her books out from under her arm, the rustling of coats against coats accompanying the movement, Rimma set them down before separating the textbooks from the notebooks into two stacks. Fishing through her pockets for the pens and pencils she had brought in order to set them out as well, she replied with a slightly sheepish laugh accompanied by a small puff of snow. "I am afraid I have yet to see our teacher in action," Here, she paused long enough to give a nod and put on a more confident looking smile. "Though I am sure they are very awesome when the situation calls for it."
Taking to the indicated spot, the slight gloom around Arisu didn't go consciously noticed - although a chill went through Rimma for a moment, she dismissed it as little more than the effects of her own Quirk making her cold at all times despite her current overly bundled state of dress. On the subject of their subject of study, Rimma gave a light shake of her head before moving to grab one of the text books off the stack she had brought. "Ah, not yet - though I do imagine we will get there eventually!"
Holding the book up to show the cover to the other girl, she explained. "We have been studying procedure, to build a foundation for field work simulations." The book in question, titled Disarming Danger, depicted a stand-off between multiple figures on it's cover. Setting it back down, Rimma took up one of he notebooks next and started flipping through the pages while continuing to speak. "Although a thesis on disarming a mecha is not far off from some of the assignments - here, this should be a good example."
Folding the pages back on her notebook to make it easier to hand off, if Arisu accepted and glanced the page on display over she would find it to be a rough draft on how to go about dealing with an aggressive bank heist. Numerous key questions would be outlined, centered around questions about how well equipped the criminals in question were, how many of them there were, and what manner of Quirks they may or may not have at their disposal. Each question would be addressed with ideas on how to obtain the needed information promptly and safely, or to make it irrelevant - such as attempting to incapacitate before any Quirk usage on their part could be done.
The paper would be littered with scribbled out ideas, little additions or revisions where the bundled up red-head had erased parts of what had been written or crammed a clarifying word into a sentence. It was of course just a draft, but it was centered around Rimma's current abilities - most of the proposed plans she had written down were centered around using her Quirk to obstruct vision, compromise the ground with coatings of ice, freeze doors shut or jam mechanisms on weapons with her freezing breath. Notably, there would be a distinct lack of actual physical engagement proposed and a reliance on incapacitating targets indirect ways.

--- ARISU --- -better than watching paint dry- "Speaking of which, do you know who our teacher is?" The comments about how awesome they were sure to be lacked a gendered pronoun, which suggested that either Rimma didn't know or the teacher was just non-binary. "And do you know what their quirk is? I love mine, but it's best against a certain category of quirk- come to think of it, I might actually have trouble taking on folks without quirks, dumb as that sounds," muttered Arisu as she watched Rimma for reactions and nonverbal cues. "Or like yours. I can think of some ways I might be able to fend for myself, but quirks that deal with cold or the dark don't sound like they'll give me much latitude for error."
The reveal that their study topic was... an area of study and not something pracitcable was disappointing- at least until Rimma started getting into the details with her and sharing her own thesis on the topic of defusing a bank heist rapidly. Arisu gave it her full attention, studying the answers Rimma had come up with and nodding enthusiastically. "Yeah! Wow, you've got a lot of nonlethal suppression built into your quirk, don't you? You can stick people in place, jam their weapons, knock them out through hypothermia- I... haven't really tried to use my quirk on people before so I'd be short on options to defuse an armed robbery."
Arisu sits back and muses on the topic for a few moments. "Well. I suppose I might be able to render gunfire useless if I could get close enough without getting gunned down. But it wouldn't stop other violence. I'd probably need to resort to terror tactics to get them to give up without hurting them- or, without hurting more than one of them, I mean. Gosh, how awful is that," muttered the girl. "I don't really wanna hurt anyone, but I'd rather see people trying to hurt others end up hurting than the victims they pick. I guess that's kind of the line we have to draw, right? If we don't have a quirk that will let us shut someone down without injury, we have to get used to the idea of opting to let their choices to violate the rights of others volunteer them to have theirs violated in the process of protecting innocents."
Arisu looked back up at Rimma, hesitant to even broach the subject she was thinking about. "I... saw... some videos recently. About the Tokyo5 incident. That... sort of threw me. I'd always thought of being a hero as this abstract, manga thing, where bad guys are carted off in cuffs with soot marks and bruises yelling about how they'll get their revenge and stuff." She was quiet a second. "The broadcast I saw was nothing like that. It was brutal. I've never seen that much hate in someone before. And- and that includes the people who thought I was a freak, even back when all my quirk did was make it a little dark and cold around me. That was- that was more like disgust, which is its own brand of awful, you know..? But those... villains," she uttered, the word dropping like a brick. "- they were there to hurt. Because they hated. And they wanted everyone to know they had the power to do that then, and any time they wanted. That's- that's terrorism, isn't it? The literal definition?"
"Have the teachers said anything about all that yet?" Her voice was quiet. This wasn't a fun topic.

The questions about their teacher prompted Rimma to falter for a moment, her expression turning just slightly sheepish. Giving a slight clear of her throat, she replied. "Well... I am ashamed to admit I really do not know that much about them. In class I mostly call them 'sensei' - I believe that is the proper term at least, none have corrected me so far - and I have not seen or heard about their Quirk yet." After the somewhat awkward admission, the topic shifted to the contents of her notebook.
Listening to the other girl's enthusiastic assessment of her Quirk, the bundled up red-head gave a light smile. She stayed quiet as Arisu went on to think about her own Quirk, and then lament having to hurt anyone at all - but quickly pointing out herself that it was a matter of protecting people in the long run. Before Rimma could try to offer a reassurance on that matter, Arisu switched the topic to Tokyo5.
Brow furrowing, a small frown on her lips and cheeks puffing out just a touch, Rimma mulled over how to broach the subject - though to others it would most likely look like she was pouting instead of in deep thought. Expression turning calm and serious, the Russian girl fished her phone out of a pocket. As she tapped through it, she replied in a steady tone of voice. "You're right, Arisu - that is terrorism. Terrorism acted out by despicable, disgusting cowards using whatever justification they can find for their crimes at the expense of the innocent."
Tapping at her phone a few more times, and making sure the volume was low, she held it up close to Arisu so she could easily see and hear the video that started to play. A response to Tokyo5, the brief introduction would cut away first to footage of one of the teacher's and then to a series of students all stating their names - including herself. The edited together speech played out, a compilation of statements and sentiments given coherent flow to lead to one overall message.
The entire time, Rimma kept her attention on Arisu - on seeing if this was reassuring her at all, or if further reassurance would be needed. When the video concluded, she pulled her phone back and started speaking once more. "It was not perhaps an official school response, but one of the teachers lent their support and I am sure the only reason the rest did not is they were busy *with* an official response." Here, she paused to flash a smile and give a small attempt at humor to lighten the mood. "Or perhaps they are very camera shy?"
Then, glancing down at her phone, she quietly added. "It is hard seeing such things, but terrorism is meant to invoke fear and the best we can do for its victims is to not be afraid."

--- ARISU --- -better than watching paint dry- "Huh. Well, like what," Arisu mused, a little stifled but unrelenting in her curiosity, "-can you tell me about our teacher? I don't really have any info on them at all. Anything helps!" Her tone was still excited, still intrigued, but carried enough softness that she hoped it wouldn't alienate Rimma if she didn't have anything further to share.
The video seemed to be exactly the sort of thing Arisu needed to see. She tuned in one hundred percent, staring wide-eyed as students she'd never seen, much less met, chattered in various degrees of profanity and anger about the situation, culminating that that five-way cut of echoed sentiment.
She still didn't look happy, but Arisu nodded a little, huffing faintly. "Thanks. That helps. I'm glad I'm not the only one with bile in my throat over this whole stupid mess. We're all people. It's the ones that can't see that on both sides causing issues, not quirkers or non-quirkers. Right?"
Arisu looked to Rimma, then shook her head a little. "... the best thing we can do for the victims is to bring the people responsible to justice so nobody joins them. I am terrified, but of what people might do in reaction to this sort of thing. Some people won't see a bunch of kids taking vidya as any real statement of who supports what."
The girl stares at the table quietly and murmurs, "People are gonna get hurt. And I'm really scared of just how many will. Because this is- this is an angry, careless match. Next comes wildfire. And, if that doesn't get stopped..."

Rimma would have liked to satisfy Arisu's curiosity about their teacher - but the simple truth was, the Russian herself was still new and barely knew anything more than the other girl did. Giving an apologetic smile, she gave a light shake of her head and admitted as much. "Eezveeneete - that is to say 'Sorry' - but I really have not had much time to learn much at all myself." Then, the topic moved on to showing Arisu the video Emi had put together.
To the bundled up red-heads relief, the other girl did seem reassured after watching it - if still rightfully upset. Rimma gave a nod of agreement, a small smile on her face at finding another person who seemed to understand the core of the matter. So, she couldn't help but reply enthusiastically despite the solemn subject. "Yes! That is precisely right, Arisu - it is good to find more who have their priorities in order." Her smile faltered, however, as the other girl shook her head and gave a different take on how best to handle the situation.
A sentiment that was not wrong per se, certainly not in the right context... but did not quite apply to them as they were in the present moment. Keeping her tone quiet and soft, Rimma replied with a counterpoint of her own. "Criminals and villains being brought to justice is for the best, of course, but it is not our role - not yet. We are students, civilians, and bringing such people to justice is the role of police, heroes and other officials." Here, her expression and tone turned firm - a sign of the conviction the Russian girl was speaking with. "They will be brought to justice, long before it is our time to do such work, as will any who listen to those madmen and become criminals themselves."
She paused for a moment, her expression softening and giving a small sigh accompanied by a puff of snow. Glancing up from her phone and at Arisu, she added. "This fear of wildfire to come, is not uncommon sentiment - but I think is a pessimistic one, no? Everything would have to fall very far, with governments and officials and heroes and the simple good people of the world all failing to do anything about it. I cannot help but find it far fetched at best."
Then, she gave a slightly sheepish smile once more - not having intended to go off quite so long as she had. "I do not mean to scold or ramble. I only wish to remind you to have faith in the good of people, and not fear so much the bad." To accompany the apology, she gave a slight incline of her head to emulate a polite bow.

--- ARISU --- -better than watching paint dry- "Hrm. Well, if we don't know enough yet... perhaps some discrete surveillance is in order? It isn't right for students to be in the dark about their sensei, after all- what sort of class would that be?" Her tone, though, was more playful and teasing than anything. 'Surveillance' was more likely to mean 'asking around and doing a Google search' than anything else.
It was reassuring to know others shared her bafflement at trying to draw these distinctions, and it showed. She flashed a smile to Rimma, tucking her forelock and its barrettes out of her face. "It's arbitrary. These... lines. But... prejudice always is, isn't it? The wrong color. The wrong belief. The wrong... quirk. It's stupid and arbitrary. People need excuses to let them hate. This is just the newest one."
"Oh, I didn't- mean us," muttered Arisu. "I just meant that... I didn't think simply ignoring them was the best thing to do for the victims. They deserve justice. They deserve to be avenged. Maybe they'll be judged by history, but that's not... it doesn't change the fact that they were murdered, you know?"
The idea that worrying about this worldfire being pessimistic left her shaking her head. "I don't think it's at all pessimistic. I think it's realistic. It'd... take very little inaction at higher levels to let base tensions skyrocket. And in the end... we're probably going to be the ones fighting the war against the Gifted Underground, which makes all the normals happy. The quirkists are happy we're dying, and if we win, which we... we have to. Then the righteous get to see the Underground fail. It's not -optimistic-, no, but... pessimism isn't the only alternative." WORD COUNT: 298 TEMPLATE BY ELIZA @ BOTE & THQ

The jokingly proposed idea of spying on their homeroom teacher got a laugh from Rimma - one which she had to stifle and turn into a quieter giggle. They were, after all, still in a library. It would be incredibly rude to start being loud and rambunctious in a place where others were trying to study.
Arisu identifying the inherent stupidity of prejudice only made the bundled up red-head nod in enthusiastic agreement a second time. Really, it was distressingly rare to find those who realized something as simple as this! Although she tried not to be the judgmental sort, it raised her opinion of the other girl a lot.
Then the girl muttered a clarification, and Rimma blinked in slight surprise. Flashing a briefly apologetic smile, she replied. "Ah, I may have slightly misunderstood." Her expression shifted as her brow furrowed and her cheeks puffed out in annoyance - though it looked more like petulance than anything. "There have been students talking of taking action that is little more than law breaking themselves, and would only complicate the efforts of actual officials who know what they are doing." She trailed off for a moment, expression going neutral once more before adding. "The best thing is a matter of roles and context - there is no reason officials cannot do their best thing by bringing criminals to justice, and civilians can do their best thing by being good and brave in the meantime, no?"
As Arisu shook her head and relabeled her pessimism as realism, and Rimma raised an eyebrow. Trying to keep her voice low and her tone polite, she replied. "You talk as if the world is a house of cards that will collapse from one false move, assume a group of madmen will last beyond the year, and as if all without a Quirk would be happy to see those with them die - and do not see that as pessimism?" Her expression turned serious again, and once more her tone carried a heavy sense of conviction. "Even if a higher up ignored their duty, those below would still perform theirs - and in many ways that is their role, as a president does not go about commanding the police force - and at the very realistically worse the higher ups who did not do their duty would be replaced with those more qualified. And this gifted underground as they call themselves, do you not think their numbers will be under constant siege as they are brought to justice? The name may still be in use when we graduate, perhaps, but all those who would use it will be brought to justice - and it is unlikely many, if any, of their original numbers will be roaming free. Police and officials will be working day and night to bring them to justice, after all, along with all the other criminals out there. As to this wildfire - it is reliant on people forgetting to be good and brave, and while some might turn themselves into criminals for arbitrary and foolish reasons..."
Rimma paused, closing her gray-blue eyes to take a breath. Once she had, she let it out in a small sigh - as always, accompanied by a puff of snow - and reopened her eyes. With a slightly apologetic smile, she brought her rebuttal to a close. "I do not mean rant or ridicule or cause any offense, but I cannot see the bleak scenario you have painted as all that realistic."

--- arisu --- - learn or repeat -
Mentioning that students had been planning to try to do something about this mess themselves was perhaps not the wisest comment to make to the vigilante sympathizer! Rather than looked horrified or upset, Arisu immediately looked intrigued. "Really? We have students strong enough to go up against the kind of brutality we saw? Who? What sort of quirks do they have? Have they stopped any villains before, do you think?" The barrage of questions was enthusiastic in the extreme, immediately curious as to what precisely these students planned to do to push the scales back towards alignment. Rimma clarified, though, and Arisu straightened up, clearing her throat. "... well- well, of course, that's possible- perfectly reasonable, really, that everyone can do their own personal best. We just answered the questions from different perspectives, that's all."
Rimma's comment regarding the state of fragility- or lack of it, more accurately- got a sidelong, unhappy look from Arisu. She didn't seem upset, just... not excited about the situation in general. "It basically is, Rimma. Like- checks and balances only work when the entities enforcing them do so. If those entities share the same bad view you do, then just like that, you have something that looks legitimate and one hundred percent isn't. Tack onto that the general unwillingness of most people to endanger themselves or their family for someone else, and it becomes really easy to coerce an entire population into allowing atrocities out of fear for themselves. 'At least it's not me.' That's the thought that allowed Pol Pot, Adolf Hitler- basically everyone who's ever perpetrated genocide has used 'at least it's not me' to keep an otherwise good population from rising up while they slaughter millions."
Arisu shifted in her seat. She didn't like conflict, but she felt pretty strongly about this. "I know it's tempting to think, 'it's been so long. we're better now.' But we're not, we really aren't. We're still just people. Scare the population, legitimize your hate, and you have to somehow motivate an entire population who would otherwise be nominally safe to put themselves in the line of fire for a subset of people they don't belong to. It's happened. More than once or twice. Just this time, the Jews have superpowers. Maybe that'll help. I don't know. But I feel like it's just gonna make the fearmongering sound legitimate."
The girl's eyes flicked back up to Rimma. "I hope you're right. I want to be wrong. But we can't just... assume that everyone's going to stand up for us. Presuming that everyone else's decency is all the armor we need is going to get us on the front lines of a war with ourselves, or... or worse." She took a deep breath and huffed it out. "I don't think that violence is the answer, though. I think that making people aware of what COULD happen if we're complacent is the way to avoid it. That's why I'm really proud of you and Emi for making those videos. That's exactly the sort of thing we need."

The excitement Arisu expressed when Rimma mentioned students trying to run off on their own prompted a furrowed brow and slight puffing of the bundled up red-head's cheeks. This was not the kind of reaction she expected or thought appropriate to hearing about hot headed rule breakers. She did her best to actually answer the questions, though, even if her tone and expression did little to hide her disapproval towards the students in question. "Yes, and no. I do not really know precisely who, or what Quirks they have, or even if they have ever dealt with criminals before - but I do know they either came back empty handed or were returned by officials and teachers who caught wind of their attempts."
Her expression did soften, though, and she gave a nod of agreement when Arisu mentioned different perspectives. It was the other girl's turn to look displeased, though in a different way than she herself had moments prior. The Russian girl's lips pursed at her view being described as bad - but she held her tongue and listened quietly to everything Arisu had to say about the subject.
Some of it still struck her as rooted in pessimism, and some of it left her wondering if her own views had been expressed unclearly or if perhaps the other girl was making an assumption or two. Despite that, however begrudgingly, she had to admit to some of the points Arisu was making. As the other girl finished speaking, the Russian remained quiet for a moment longer as she tried to compose her own thoughts on the matter.
Once she had, she raised up a finger as she took things point by point. "I do not mean to lecture, but there are a few bad things in your own view that I can see. First and foremost to me is that acting in fear of others acting in fear is still allowing yourself to fall into a fearful mindset." With that addressed, she raised a second finger before continuing. "The general public should not endanger themselves - it is not their role to be stepping up into the line of fire. That is why we have police and soldiers, politicians and all manner of other officials. You do not expect your neighbors to rush into a burning building, no? That is what you expect of a firefighter, and it is to them the responsibility lies." A third finger came up. "People are still people, yes, and they always will be. That does not mean people do not learn and improve with time, individually and as a whole, however - we most certainly are better than we were, even if we are still far from perfect and fall into many old bad habits still, and to say otherwise does us all a disservice I think."
Rimma paused to purse her gray-blue lips for a moment, before letting out a snow-flaked sigh. Lowering her hand, she made an attempt at a lighter tone and a smile. "I do not think violence is the right way either, and I very, very much agree that it is good to be cautious and prepared." Here, she paused again, brow furrowing and cheeks puffing out in deep thought before adding. "Though if you are right, and history repeats itself but with superpowers this time and things go very bad... It falls to us to put things back together, and I know we will be prepared to do so."

--- arisu --- - - -
"Oh." Arisu didn't do much to veil her own disappointment at the lack of forthcoming information, but she seemed more like a let-down fan than actually personally invested. "Well... that's sensible enough. I can't see the teachers condoning students in their care throwing themselves actively into the line of fire before being certified as ready to do so. At the -very- least on a professional level, and most of the teachers seem to care enough to take the same stand personally as well. I'd be lying if the idea of student heroes wasn't appealing. It sort of makes me feel like maybe I'll be able to get somewhere myself, you know? Right now I still fight with feeling like I'm treading water, going no place."
Arisu gave Rimma the floor as she addressed a few of her own concerns, and waited for the other girl to finish her explanations and analysis before speaking up. She visibly tuned in to everything said, and weighed each statement rather than rejecting them out of hand.
"So... I do have to agree that acting out of fear of other's actions is just as fear-based and foolish as anything else, but only in so far as those actions create a detriment in your life or others. Beyond that, sometimes the best time to take action to protect yourself or others -is- to act before there is a chance for things to prove themselves horrible. Sure, things might be fine if you let a teenager play with a handgun, but they WILL be fine if you take the gun away. The problem is when that mentality is aimed at people with handguns built into their very selves, so to speak- us. People want to just make us normal because it's more convenient for them if they don't need to worry about people with biological... "handguns." The way things are changing is reasonable- requiring licenses and training before publically using those "handguns", so to speak. What's scary is that if the people who think all quirks ought to be outlawed, their possessors corralled away to make the world safer for everyone else, start convincing the general population that's the way it should be. That is -so much harder- to backpedal on without absolute tragedy if you address it later rather than sooner. I know that all the preparation and worrying seems like needless anxiety to you, but if that sort of thing isn't caught, and addressed carefully, -early-, then things get way worse before they get better. That's all I was saying. I see your points, and they aren't wrong, but I feel like it's important to clarify things."
On the last point, at least, she seemed in agreement, and nodded along. "Yeah. We'll be ready if that does happen- but I'd much prefer to be the deluded maniac raving in the shadows about things that'll never come to pass than some sort of Cassandra prophesying disaster. So here's hoping I'm just as foolish as you think, huh?" Arisu tried her best to flash a smile- but truth told, she really was pretty strained over these topics, for all she did to try to glaze over them and hide the stress.

Arisu's disappoint was obvious, but to Rimma's relief she didn't start defending half-cocked vigilantism or even really seem all that put out. Instead she remained as level-headed as she had shown herself to be thus far in their interactions together. The Russian girl nodded along in agreement with her assessment on what the teacher's almost certainly felt about the matter, pursing her lips slightly at the idea of 'student heroes' being appealing.
To her, that was little more than romanticizing a form of vigilantism - but rather than aggressively point that out, she let Arisu finish her thought while thinking about how to phrase her own reply. It was good that she did, since she found herself agreeing once more with the sentiments the other girl expressed. It helped her think of a better way to put what she wanted to get across, too, and she gave a small smile before saying. "Perhaps later in the year, or in our second or third year, they will allow us to work as heroes part time under professional supervision? Working as sidekicks would be good experience for the future, no?"
Then, after presenting her three main points of debate, the bundled up red-head listened quietly and respectfully as Arisu took her turn addressing everything. It was the polite thing to do for one, but the other girl had done the same for her - normally when these subjects came up, she found herself frustrated and reasoned debate quickly turned to little more than a shouting match. In part because of her own stubbornness and short temper, but also because her peers tended to be far less reasonable and calm than Arisu was.
Once again, the other girl was acknowledging the points she had made while providing some solid counterpoints the Russian couldn't really refute. As she listened, her brow furrowed and her cheeks puffed out in deep thought. The look might come across as pouting, but she was taking what Arisu had to say seriously and thinking it through.
No matter how she thought about it, though, there wasn't really all that much to be said - Arisu was right, more or less, even if they still disagreed on viewpoints. With a small sigh accompanied by a small puff of snow, Rimma gave another agreeable nod. "It is good to understand one another fully - and I must admit you have made some very good points I had not thought of." She paused for a moment, before giving what she hoped was a reassuring smile in response to the strained seeming one Arisu tried to give. "After talking it over, I do not think you are very foolish at all - though I do still hope for the best, as you said."
The debate seemed to have come to a natural conclusion, and she was suddenly struck by an amusing thought despite the otherwise serious topic. "This is one of the few times a conversation such as this has gone so well for me, even if we started by disagreeing." She gave a small laugh, before turning her attention back to the study materials she had brought. Focusing her attention on notebooks and textbooks once more, she tried to move things back on track. "In any case, we have gone somewhat off the rails. You wanted to go over previous lesson plans, no?"
Assuming Arisu was still willing, Rimma would pour over the rest of her notes and books with her in an effort to help get her up to speed on the kinds of things they had been studying in class prior to her arrival at the school. No stranger to studying herself, the Russian girl wouldn't mind staying however long would be needed - treating it as an opportunity to review old material for herself, and to learn from any particular insights Arisu might have as well. Afterwards, or even if Arisu wanted to cut their study session short, the bundled up red-head would extend an open offer to study together in the future whenever the other girl wanted to.
All in all, Rimma came away feeling like she had gotten some good insight into one of her classmates.

--- arisu --- - - - "That'd be wonderful. I- really want to get out into the community and start being a force for good. The more visible we are putting ourselves on the line to protect everybody, the more comfortable everyone will be with the idea of quirkers wandering around. Plus the more experience we get in safer environments, the better and safer we'll be in the real situations we'll face as heroes." Arisu fell quiet a moment, then spoke plainly. "Have you ever thought about that? We won't be students forever. We're training to be real heroes. The kind that go against villains and disasters. This isn't just- some manga school slice of life thing. We'll really be out there one day."Hearing that she hadn't convinced Rimma that she was an irredeemable fool was quite relieving, and Arisu showed it with a smile. "Thanks. I don't think you're foolish either. It's not wrong to hope for the best. I think maybe it takes more strength to trust that things will be good, that people will be good. So I sort of envy you that, Rimma-san.""Yeah, for such an unresolved disagreement, I think we really did discuss it properly. Nobody got mad or screamed- but hey," she murmured under her breath, "Maybe it's just because no boys were around, right?" It certainly wasn't a -fair- comment to make, much less an accurate one... but it seemed like a funny one! And the time for seriousness seemed to have passed, anyhow. Arisu buckled down with her new schoolmate and focused on catching up on all the lessons she'd missed. She was quite bright and a fast study, though it became pretty rapidly clear that her aptitudes lay in creative problem solving and not sheer memorization- every time they had a vocab list or map or chart to study, her eyes glazed a bit, for all the effort she put in anyways. It was only the tactical exercise maps that she seemed to have a knack for. In the end, when they finished, they left the library together, chatting about a few less stressful things- like ideas for some of the school clubs and a few of the interests they shared. To any eyes, it seemed like the start of a pretty healthy friendship- maybe not one build on idealistic duplication, but surely one on symmetry. And perhaps in the long run, it would be all the stronger for it. END TAGS: WORD COUNT: 416 TEMPLATE BY ELIZA @ BOTE & THQ
