Each student participating would get a nice little text on their phone. Hello, students! This is Alex from Hero Operations here to tell you that I have something a little unique cooked up for you here. Come out to the sports fields. I’ve put up some wooden signs in the snow that I want you all to follow, and there is a big spray painted X for your starting position. Meet there at around 1330hrs and wait for the signal for your scenario to begin.
I’m not going to tell you what’s going to happen in advance, because part of being a hero is reacting to unexpected situations. That being said, the signal will be extremely obvious. Like, really really mega super obvious. Bring some first aid kits – you’ll need them. The scenario itself was simple enough. There would be three dummy vehicles that passed by once all students were in position without giving them time to discuss any strategy, essentially being a wooden frame being carried along by six motorized wheels each. The outer frame would be of solid wood, and inside each frame would be some dummies. These dummies, however, were slightly different than the average dummy. These dummies had an outer layer that was weak to high temperature changes to simulate burning and frostbite, and also had red liquid inside of them to simulate blood loss. If a dummy suffered enough wounds to activate its resistance function, it would actively struggle and be a nuisance to any rescuer trying to carry them to safety by squirming around and generally being dead weight that needed to be dragged along. Not in the helpful running away from danger so they don’t have to be rescued sense, but in the very unhelpful ‘struggling against your rescuer’ sense. People who just got injured tended to not be the most rational of people, especially after a traumatic and unforeseen event. As the three dummy vehicles passed by, there would be a quick series of explosions that would be ‘the signal’. The explosives would be set off by some remote-controlled Roombas set to detonate when given the remote command generously donated by support studies. While there were slightly different amounts of explosives packed into each Roomba… with six of them in total, it was far easier to just make more of them explode in some cars than others. The Roombas would begin their assault from out of vision of the students at the starting area, which was completely on purpose. The wooden structure of the car dummies would block the view of the cause of the damage until they were already primed to explode. The back car was the heaviest hit and flung its dummies pretty far forward due to the mass of explosions that hit its back tires. It flipped over, first forward and then on its side be a smoldering wreck as more than a little bit of fire started due to both the explosives and the motorized wheels losing their integrity and either catching on fire or exploding as well. The middle car rolled over on its side, landing upside down with the empty bottom of the wooden car exposed with a small but growing fire catching on throughout the structure. The first car did not flip, and was hit with less force and in a different direction than the last two cars. One mannequin is directly seen most of the way through the window with one foot seeming to be caught on something inside, but the front of the car has the most severe fire out of all of them. In this scenario, there are eight mannequins in varying stages of injury and danger. These mannequins represented innocent civilians that were caught up in a villain attack, and quick thinking and good prioritization would be necessary to save all that could be saved. Mannequin 1 is hanging out the window of the first car. One foot is snagged in the seatbelt area in the back of the car. There is a fire starting to rage at the front of the first car and will become large enough to burn the mannequin in one post cycle. Once the burns took effect, the resistance function in the dummy would be activated and it would actively start squirming for the rest of the exercise. In two post cycles, the mannequin will start melting and will be considered to be horrifically wounded. At the beginning of the third post cycle, if no action is taken the mannequin will have melted to the point of being declared dead. This mannequin and their plight is immediately noticeable to the students from their starting area. Mannequin 2 was knocked out the window of the middle car early on in its rolling and is completely fine. Aside from very superficial damage, this mannequin is not injured at all and requires no immediate assistance despite lying on the ground with some minor debris on top of it weighing no more than five pounds in total. Mannequin 3 was tossed out of the last car during the last roll and has a broken leg. At the beginning of round 3 if no action is taken a motorized wheel of the last car will pop off and drop a large piece of flaming debris right on the head of this mannequin – ‘killing’ it instantly. Mannequin 4 was tossed forward a great distance from the last car and is smaller than the other mannequins. This one is meant to simulate a child in a booster seat, and this one landed with the booster seat taking the brunt of the impact. This mannequin is in no danger whatsoever and requires no immediate assistance. The wide arc of this mannequin would be noticed by students from the starting area, but the final landing location is not immediately visible. Mannequin 5 was flung from the middle car and is currently lying in a puddle of red liquid. One of the explosions heavily burned away at its left side, and it is lying face down in the snow. It starts the scenario horrifically wounded, and has its arm mostly severed due to the extreme burn wounds and is bleeding out very quickly. Assuming no action is taken, this mannequin ‘dies’ at the beginning of Round 2. This mannequin is immediately visible to students at the beginning of the scenario. Mannequin 6 was knocked back from the last car and has superficial bleeding. This mannequin is in no immediate danger, but has its squirming function permanently activated meaning that it will thrash and struggle even if left alone. This mannequin and its squirming is immediately visible to students at the beginning of the scenario. Mannequin 7 was never unseated from the middle car and is still secured by their seatbelt. They are also on permanent squirming mode. The side of the car is broken apart so that students can immediately see this mannequin struggling. The mannequin will be fine for one turn, but at the beginning of the second both of the motorized wheels in the back will also catch fire and accelerate the burning process. By the end of round 3, this mannequin will be a melted mess and considered dead. Mannequin 8 is not immediately visible to the students from their starting area because it is blocked by the wreckage of the first car. This mannequin is lying in the snow and is in no danger for two turns. At the beginning of the third turn, this mannequin would start to be burned by the spreading fire from the first car. At the beginning of the fourth turn assuming no action is taken, a small explosion caused by one of the motorized wheels exploding would shoot out a piece of lumber that was both on fire and heavy enough to smash the dummy’s legs and from that point on it would be considered horrifically wounded with red liquid spewing out everywhere. At this point the dummy would be unsaveable through conventional means and would be considered dead one post cycle later.

What a lot of bull. She read the text with a growing scowl. It was nice, polite and generally neutral. All things she had never come to expect from one Alexander Deraine. If anything, she would have preferred to keep far away from his business. Unfortunately, he was the only student willing to offer extra training to any student that asked, and she could do with some catching up.
Still. If the text was supposed to put her mind at ease, it failed miserably. Either a faculty member had finally wised up to the boy's behaviour, or he had a devilish scheme in mind. Either way, there wasn't much she could do - short of not turning up to the exercise, and that wasn't much of an option. She needed the training, and she also didn't need to give him any more reasons to exclude her from further training.
And so she found herself at the big X, dressed and ready to go. Well, sort of. She'd ditched her Halloween costume for a more lightweight outfit. Was she cosplaying a chef or a knight? Neither, technically - the outfit was a one to one replica of an anime protagonist. The only problem was that said anime was 1) a magical girl show, and 2) about as old as her grandmother.
On the other hand, at least nobody would realise that she was into ancient magical girl power.
In one arm was her first aid kit. Surely Alex had known that first aid classes weren't a part of their curriculum (yet), so why would they bring something they weren't expected to know how to use? If she had to guess, his exercise would be his way of explaining what could have been done in a text: that a hero that hoped to thrive in life-threatening situations would do well to stop life from being threatened. Him actually being with them and teaching them first aid could’ve gotten the message across just as well whilst solving the problem, ‘but that would be too easy, wouldn’t it, Alex?’ Her frown was the only indication of her thoughts, if anybody looked her way.
She’d hoped she could best him by learning! That would teach him not to make her try to learn! Alas, as it happened, five minutes worth of uTube videos didn’t prove much more insight than common sense did. She’d have to ask the school nurse about it some time, but until then, she had a box of dead weight – and a few surprises within.
Her party arrived, in due time, giving them a few moments to get the formalities out of the way. “If you don’t know me, I’m Emi Ryoko Tachibana. Hero name: Ha-“ Before she could finish introducing herself, their problems did. Specifically, half a dozen bombs that demanded her attention.
Emi turned. She looked. She froze. Flames, figurines and a little bit of fright flooded her senses, binding her to the spot as she attempted to comprehend it all. Not her most heroic move, but then, how many times had a scene erupted into chaos before her in the blink of an eye? The only part of her that still bore life was her face – a few shades lighter, but no less animated. Widened eyes and a mouth hanging agape said what lingered in her mind: ‘Are you fucking kidding me?’
Hands. She could still move her hands. She could move her hands to her cheeks and slap them simultaneously. That did the trick of shocking the rest of her body back to life, which was more than she could say for the dummies in front of them. They had to be their objectives, which meant she was failing horribly just by standing still. It was time for her to make her move.
She took off. One of the dummies – motorized, from the looks of it – was having a seizure on the ground. That was as good a target as any, right? Mannequin 6 also happened to be free of any external danger, making it easy pickings… If it cared to be picked up. As Emi learned the hard way (abandoning her first aid kit in the process), its squirming didn’t stop once she reached down to sling the thing over her shoulder. “Oh, come on- Sit still you dumb pi- Alright!” She stopped resisting the mannequin’s attempts to free itself long enough for it to slide down her back, just in time for her to catch it with a crystal band around the two. Much like mothers in centuries past carried their children on their back, Emi carried a resisting upside-down doll back to the start point, cursing with every whack to the head and knees it gave.
Maybe she wouldn’t be the best mother, but was that really news to anybody?

Post by Shimizu Haruto on Dec 22, 2018 23:21:59 GMT -4
Haruto wasn't entirely surprised when he got the text from Alex- It could be said that this exercise was half his idea, after all. Unfortunately, between the events at the military camp, and his work as club president and class vice president, his part time job, and the extra elective classes he was taking for school... He could only apologize, and leave the bulk of the preparations to the hero student. Fortunately, Alex had been understanding... Or perhaps, he simply never expected anything from Haruto in the first place.
In any case, Haruto had been looking forward to it. Not so much when the topic had first come up, although it had been interesting- But for Haruto, who always intended to take up a passive role as a medic or doctor, such field training had always been one of his lesser priorities. At least, that had been the case until the Semper Fi military camp. He knew he shouldn't blame himself, but... It was the second time. First the circus, and now this... If he had been more prepared, would that doctor have died?
He would never know. And that question would likely haunt him for a long time. Long enough to make him desire to train harder than ever before- After all, lightning should never strike the same place twice; But when it does, you should probably be prepared for a third. And if it did, he didn't want to have that kind of regret ever again.
Not being a hero student, Haruto of course did not have a hero costume. Instead he simply chose to wear the gym clothes issued by the school- They should suit him as well as any for this. Of course, he wouldn't forget to bring his first aid kit- Even if Alex hadn't specifically mentioned it, he couldn't go to something like this without one. Since his quirk was so heavily targeted towards poisons, his ability as a support would largely depend on his limited medical skills. And despite being in the first aid elective, he still had much to learn.
He would shortly arrive at the scene of the exercise, only to see that he was not the first. A girl- He recognized her, probably having seen her in the halls, but as they had never properly met, her self-introduction was appreciated. Or it would be, if not for the fact that halfway through, the world burst into flames.
Immediately, his quirk kicked into gear- The smoke around him would seem to swirl into his body, as the impurities were drawn in. It was never a pleasant feeling, but- At least it cleared some visibility. Enough for him to see the damages. One 'car' had flipped, it's occupants thrown clear. A second car had two occupants on the ground- Were any left inside? The car that had been in the lead prominently featured a dummy hanging out of the window. In the past, Haruto may have struggled to treat dummies as seriously as living beings- But now was different. For one, he knew from the first aid class that UA's dummies could not be treated as simply as any he had encountered in the past- And for another, he was determined to improve, and the only way to do that would be to do his best.
The dummy which immediately caught his eye was the dummy #5, laying in a pool of its own 'blood.' Without stopping to discuss, the girl named Emi had sprung into action towards the #6- Haruto didn't allow himself to fall more than a step behind. Haruto moved towards the number five, fumbling with the clasp on his first aid kit as he moved.
He couldn't help but wonder, was this dummy even salvageable? Or was it going to be like that doctor, dead despite his best ministrations? A sick feeling rose in Haruto's throat as he recalled that, but he pushed it down as he pushed himself forward. If these mannequins were anything like the ones he knew from the medical classes, they should respond to treatment as though they were a living human.
Out of the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of the girl, Emi- What was she even doing? A dummy hung upside down from her back, but Haruto had no time to ask questions. This dummy was 'alive?' at least, despite his fears, but he had no idea how long that would last. It was horrifically burned, after all, and was missing an arm. A voice in the corner of his mind told him to cut losses, to abandon this one in order to buy more time to save the rest of the dummies... But, that voice was silenced by the regrets he had about the doctor he had failed to save. He wouldn't, couldn't, allow himself to let even one victim die, if he had the power to save it!
However, he tried not to let his angst interrupt his actions. He swiftly would clear the wound of debris and other obstructions- His quirk would work to disinfect the wound of course, though he doubted the dummies would be kept around long enough for infection to be a consideration. Swiftly he covered the wound in gauze, wrapping it with bandages to hold it to the wound. This would staunch the bleeding, though whether it would be enough to save the dummy, only time could tell.
Even so, Haruto would be putting everything he had learned in his classes to use, in the hopes of preventing that from happening.

phantom grip 'A little unique'? What exactly did he mean by that?
The girl found the last hero ops exercise she was in already somewhat different from what the teachers actually prepare during classes. Whatever Alex planned, she only hoped that it wasn't anything which took too much of a toll on her, and her partners. The text was already worrying enough when he mentioned the apparent importance of first aid kits. Either way, Mira enjoyed challenges, she wasn't letting this one pass. Plus, she does need some improvement.
Eventually, she arrived, not long after the other two, yet clearly the last. Even as she was in a hero course, Mira didn't appear to bring any special costume. Just like the male teen himself, she sported the familiar gym uniform, one she has been bringing to every latest exercise. It's the only more proper one she has, after all. The rest is just casual clothing. "Hey, guys." She greeted, happy to meet new faces as she smiled. The purpette might have seen the two around the school at times already, though it probably was so brief that she most likely already forgot about their appearances. Especially considering they weren't exactly wearing their most normal attires, specifically Emi.
Sadly, they wouldn't have much time to get to know each other, as the other girl of the group found herself interrupted during her introduction by an abrupt sequence of explosions, happening right ahead of them. "... Okay..." That was when she fully noticed the scenario. Wood vehicles and dummies; another rescue mission using dolls. 'Ahhh... Another of these...' Last time she was in on one similar, while it didn't go as bad, it had gotten her in a not so good state. This time it was fire, that other time was a flood. She only had a few seconds to ponder on which scenario she thought was the worse, only to come with no answers. Before she could notice, the others already sprung in.
"Oh--, already?!" Of course, Mira wouldn't just stay still. Although it wasn't initially mentioned, Mira did bring the first aid kit just as it was suggested, taking a step forth, and then another, before leaping into the action.
There was a widened expression clearly visible across her features, her eyes scanning left and right, noticing her two rescue partners already arriving to their chosen mannequins. 'Look carefully and think... Think...' Through her analysis, she deduced that all of them, if not most, needed immediate rescue. But the fire. Whilst at most times she's optimistic and up to all sorts of challenges, this time she was a bit scared of the flames. Then again, it's not like any of the dolls are exactly being bombarded by them, only that they're pretty close to.
Eventually, her gaze is glued onto #7, seemingly the one struggling the most, or at least she thought. From first sight, he was the one still inside one of the vehicles, most likely stuck. The last time she dealt with stuck dolls, she had a pretty hard time attempting to free them. Hopefully the same doesn't happen today, or the fire will most likely catch up to her attempts. She still couldn't see much though, only from where the side of the car was broken, revealing the vicious squirming of the poor thing. Mira closed the gap after only a few moments, pressing her hand tighter onto the handle of the first aid kit before releasing it, and allowing it to freely float right besides her.
"What are you stuck to, huh..." She mumbled to herself, leaning in, carefully looking into the broken side of the wooden vehicle, and then holding on to a not so hot part of the same, before pulling herself up to try and look from above. "...!" The girl almost instantly recoiled, falling back down as she saw a flame waving towards her in an abrupt motion. Fire really was wild. "Uhh, uh..." She slightly panicked for a moment, acting fast and looking from all angles through the broken side, before finally noticing. 'Seatbelt!' That's when she launches her arms forth, peeking in as much as she could in an attempt to find the button that would unlock the belt from around the mannequin. Once that was done, she tried to pull its body as further away as possible from the threatening flames, pressing its legs together, and then placing its hands onto its lap, prior to swiftly pulling it out in a single motion. "Ahh, stop, stop...!" It immediately slapped against her once she tried to scoop it up, her eyes shutting close for a moment so she wouldn't get accidently poked. Her arms desperately wrap around his arms, to try and stop him from squirming as much as she could. It almost looked like she was hugging the thing instead of looking like she was actually helping.
In the end, she tried to sprint back in the direction of the 'X' sprayed on the ground, away from the fire, as well as thinking about the possible threat of another explosion being triggered. You never know. First get your hostages away from the danger, then go back to collect more. Such was her strategy.

One mannequin delivered – well, dumped – at their starting point, its crystal harness releasing it onto the ground. “Stupid dumb dummy,” she grumbled, suppressing the urge to give the thing a kick for good measure. Her focus needed to be elsewhere – for example, on the hellscape in front of her. Her makeshift partners were fine – rescuing the mannequins to the best of their ability. Perhaps even better than her – the boy’s quirk had done a good job clearing a path through the smog.
The other girl's quirk was, at a glance, either invisible to her or not in use, but she was trying to help and that was the best either of them could ask in the heat of the moment. Pun intended. Her feet took her to the another close mannequin. #1 was dangling out of the car window, struggling like its life depended on it. Behind it, to her surprise, was #8, cleverly hidden in a blind spot. At least it was whole and unharmed – for the moment, and if she ignored that it had probably been thrown through a car. Both could be rescued, but not by her, and not alone. By the time she’d freed and deposited one, the fire would have consumed the other. Hell, if she hadn’t noticed them in time, they probably would have… already died…
…
If Alexander had been watching the cameras, he would have seen the exact moment that the penny dropped. It was marked by her knitted brow, then her widened eyes, and finally, a whispered: “God fucking damnit.” Of course. Why would they be in a team exercise with no teamwork required? Why throw them into straight into a dangerous situation if it wasn’t time sensitive? If she didn’t have dummies to save, she would have stopped to slap her forehead a few times, but alas. She still had work to do.
“Hey! I’m going to need a hand over here! Move the other dummy away from the fire!” Why hadn’t they realised? Had they realised, and just not cared? She didn’t know which scenario was better, and she didn’t have time to think about it either. As she hurried around to #1’s window, she kept relaying her epiphany. “Some of the dummies are more fuck- in more danger than others! Find them and get them out of it first!” If only she’d told herself that two minutes before. She’d have plenty of time to sulk about her mistakes after, though.
As if the wriggling civilian wasn’t bad enough, a quick tug of the thing revealed that it was stuck too! She had a brief thought to abandon what was already a medium-rare dummy, but as long as it was still moving, it had a chance of survival. She hoped. Another pull and a brief stare identified the problem – one of its legs was caught! She had to stick her head out of the window, rush around to the other door and open it up, bringing herself much too close to the flames for comfort. Within a few seconds, the doll was free to wriggle and squirm and be a nuisance to its heart’s content!
She pulled the body out of the car and out of the fire, creating another crystal band to keep the thing pressed against her back. It meant enduring another wrong of nudges, punches and kicks, but at least it was alive… ish. “I think this one’s going to need its burns treated!” Of course it did – why else would Alex demand they bring kits? More importantly, where was hers? As she gave her second rescue a more graceful descent to the ground, she turned to spy it – near where #6 had been. Great. At least she knew where she needed to be next.

The last bandage wrapped in place, there was nothing more Haruto could do. His hands shook as he struggled to carry the damaged doll to the safe zone. Even with the reduced weight from the missing limbs, it was a visible struggle for the boy, whose core strength had been impacted since youth by the damaging influence of his own quirk. But that wasn't why he shook. He shook because he wasn't sure, in his heart, if his efforts had been enough. That while the mannequin was not considered dead already, it soon could. His medical techniques, they... Were too untrained, to deal with such a heavy injury with the tools on hand. The fate of that mock-victim was simply no longer in his hands.
Should he have given up on the doll from the start? If, after all this, it still died, wouldn't it have been better to spend that time rescuing one of the other victims? The doll's figure overlapped with the doctor in his memory. Wouldn't it have been better, if instead of driving himself half to death trying to save the one who died anyways, he had helped the others in the room? But, if he had done that, he wasn't sure he could have forgiven himself. It was bad enough to have failed despite his best efforts, but, to not even try?
During Semper Fi, he could be said to not have been punished for his folly. Of the victims, the only one to die of poisoning had been the doctor, so Haruto's decision had not cost anyone. However, in this exercise, couldn't the other dolls be in danger at any time? As though to prove his point, the car from which the third member of their team had just rescued a dummy suddenly burst into a larger flame. He couldn't forgive himself if he ignored the heavily damaged doll, to be sure- But, what if it died anyways, and because he had spent so much time ministering to it, another victim was sacrificed, could he forgive himself then?
It would be easier if he simply saw the dolls as dolls. If he could separate himself from the task at hand. However, he could not do so. The dolls, to him, looked like real people. People from that basement, from that circus tent. The places where he had tried so hard, and yet, felt as though it had not been enough. And so he struggled as though these mannequins were alive, could die. And worried about the repercussions of failure.
Of course, he could not be said to have the luxury of worry. No sooner had he gotten the doll to the safe area, then Emi called out- She had rescued a mannequin, but it was burnt and needed treatment. "I'll be right there!" Haruto called over the roaring flames, racing towards the girl. "Leave him to me from here," he would say to her, showing his first aid kit. "I hate to admit it, but... For anything more than treating injuries, I won't be much use. So, leave the ones who need treatment to me!" He had struggled to carry the one dummy already- He was more than aware than his measly strength would not be enough to pull the dolls from the burning wreckage.
Without waiting for a response, he got to work. In the absence of cold water, the boy quickly began treating the injury. Unfortunately, there was no cold water available, nor did he have a cold compress, as would be ideal for treating burns. However, beyond that, he dutifully followed what he knew- Removing all clothing from the wound- In the process, allowing it to be sterilized by his quirk, and washing out the grit from the accident, before wrapping it in a clean bandage.
The struggles of the doll made his work much harder than it needed to be, but Haruto persevered. He was all but useless, he knew, and wasn't about to fail at one of the few things he was good for.
