All this thinking about his suit, and overall design of it, had surprisingly got Kirks brain cells moving proper! And by moving proper, it meant it literally got him moving proper! He jogged to keep that idea going even more so than usual. What stuff could he put on it? What would be comfortable? What way could he make sure he would never run out of balls and didnt need to reach out for them from his bag?! All these ideas, bouncing in his heads, yet not a single one seemed like a home run!
Except for one!
Nothing seemed more like proper armor than a tennis racquet! With a net bouncing the balls around the place when smacked at full power at things, he couldn`t help but feel like they would be perfect for it! However, the mild problem was that he had never tried specializing in it. He was a baseball dude! A guy made for teamwork! So something so strongly 1 on 1 was kind of rare for him to do! However, taking that as a hero, he needed to also prepare for that sort of thing, it made even more sense! He could already imagine himself whacking balls at an enemy with power of a cannonball, while they bounced back in recoil, and he whacked them again. Just the idea felt like a jackpot in itself...
However, For some reason, there was nobody who was able to play tennis with him for the day. Meaning, that the only enemy he could challenge to train playing tennis proper... Was the wall in the training section of U.A.
And there he was, at one of the more open spots of the building, smacking a ball against a wall, as it kept bouncing back. Sometimes it bounced a bit far, forcing Kirk to almost dive in the balls direction to return it, only to take a little bit too long to stand up to hit it back again, when it eventually bounced too far... "You darn villain! You ain`t gonna get the better of me, mighty wall of doom!" He said in his loud trademark voice. And as expected... the wall said nothing back. Kirk, feeling kind of dejected went, and grabbed the ball again and bounced it against the ground. Man, he was rusty...
Also, it didn´t really help that he was quite literally playing against a wall. It didn`t talk back or grunt, and always returned the hits, so there was no real suspense... Heck, the extra racket on his back he had reserved just in case the one he was using would break now felt almost pointless. Maybe he could try putting more power into it? After all, the wall should be sturdy enough to handle it. Heck, the school was made to handle trainee heroes like him going all out!
So, with a throw of the ball into the air, he pulled the racquet behind himself... and whopped it hard and loudly against the wall... and yup, the wall was still standing and returned the ball... only this time quite fast and powerfully by itself! "OHDARN!" He bounced from side to side, bouncing the ball against the wall, as the pace eventually normalized again with the bounces of the ball loudly echoing around the place...

Emi finally admitted to herself that the school’s facilities were pretty good. She had low expectations for pretty much everything outside her house that didn’t look expensive, but she’d come to realise that not everything of value looked like it was. Only most of them. The training grounds were unassuming, but they’d yet to fail her. They stood up to the abuse her quirks could throw at them, and showed next to no marks from her more destructive classmates. There was equipment on campus for anything she needed to train, even if she needed permission to use some of them. It was hard for her to find much to complain about… Other than somebody using her running space.
She heard him before she saw him. For a moment, she thought there might have been danger ahead, until he mentioned… a wall? The guy was yelling at a wall. Nobody was around to see her deadpan expression, or her sigh as she moved closer to the scene. Soon enough, she found herself staring at… A hunchback? Something was wrong with the boy’s back (besides the racket sticking out of it), though it was hard to tell anything specific with clothes covering the growth. With his back to her, he (hopefully) missed her slight grimace too, and she wiped it off her place shortly after. He probably couldn’t help having a tumour on his back, she reasoned. It was all too easy for her to judge. She looked less like a ‘quirker’ and more like a page out of a teenager’s sportswear lookbook. Black running gear accented by rose gold kept her looking stylish but practical, and her face, as always, had been given the love and attention it deserved. She felt she’d earned the right to be a little vain.
“Hey.” She kept a dozen’s feet distance between her and the boy, who was getting a little wild with his practice, and raised her voice to make up for it. “Are you going to finish up any time soon, or…? I kind of wanted to use the space, but it looks like you’re enjoying yourself over there. A lot.”

Kirks head was going through a minor exciting moment. Okay! He had actually recovered quite well from that one! Honestly, if he could keep that sort of pace from start to finish while launching them at an actual enemy, this could actually work out! Also, he really liked the sound, that was coming out of the racket while it hit the ball. It reminded him of the superguy comics and the huges letters saying "THWAP" and "SMACK"! And taking how everybody always whined how loud he was, that seemed like a perfect combo! Thwop, thwop, thwop! It even sounded like his typical shout while trying to keep rhythm in his running!
However, all these thoughts came to a halt with someone suddenly talking to him. For a moment he just said "Huh!?" Briefly, as continued smacking the ball into a wall. He was in the zone, he didn`t wanna stop in the middle of it. However, then the girl raised her voice, and Kirk after one more satisfying THWACK, decided to turn over towards her. "Oh! You got this spot reserved or something?" What was it with him ending up in awkward situations with girls lately? "If that`s the case I gue-!"
Suddenly a ball slammed hard against his back! "GAH!" He had somehow done a perfectly respectable on the ball, so much so that it returned to his position after hitting the wall with relative ease! ...albeit, with his back turned against it. He proceeded to crouch down for a moment holding the back of his head, and loudly whinging, while rolling against the ground, with ball itself rolling away... "Owowowowowowowow..." Man, the rebound hurt like hell. Luckily for Kirk, most of the power had went into the wall, but it didn`t mean it was any less painful. But painful enough to instill one important lesson into him: Concentrating on the game was still as important in tennis, as it was in any other sport.
However, after he had been groaning enough, he rose to a squatting position, as he stood up with no issue whatsoever, shaking his head and looking at the girl. "Uh, where was I... Oh yeah!" He actually bowed in the girls direction a bit. "Sorry! I didn`t think this spot was taken!" He proceeded to scratch his head however, as he turned his head to look towards somewhere else. "Although, if you don`t mind...!" He shrugged while smiling awkwardly. "Maybe you have some other spot you could use? Got a good thing going here, and I wouldn`t really like to stop in my tracks, you know!" His head once again turned elsewhere. He was looking for the ball. And as soon as he saw it, he squatted again, lifting it up and throwing it casually into the air, while waiting for the girls answer. Admittedly, he hadnt seen her before... although she did look prepared for sports! Always a thing to respect in this sort of thing!

Emi hadn’t been at U.A for long, but she’s noticed a few commonalities in the student body. Most were happy to be somewhere they could show off what made them special, which made her vlogging work a lot easier. Many of them were very confident, which wasn’t too surprising at a school for heroes. And, most importantly to her, a disproportionate number of her peers were very attractive.
The boy in front of her was not one of those people.
Not unattractive by any stretch of the imagination, but it was second nature to Emi to pick at the perceived flaws as soon as she saw his face. Oh, how she could do wonders for his face with a brush and a razor. She didn’t know how to shave, of course, but she could at least point him in the right direction. Minus his back hump, he seemed to take plenty of care of his body, so why was his face so lacking? A few seconds too late she remembered that she was staring with a mildly disapproving expression. “What? You can reserve these spots?” She cursed herself mentally. Things would have gone so much easier if she had thought to lie.
Fortunately for her, a distraction came soon enough. The boy didn’t seem to understand how rebound worked and, against all odds, managed to defeat himself within seconds of meeting her. Emi continued to stare at him as he rolled on the floor, switching back and forth between an unamused face and opening her mouth to speak. At least there was some comfort in the sight – she couldn’t possibly be the worst student in the school after seeing that.
Still, a part of her felt bad for him. It was technically her fault that he was hurt. Besides, what kind of hero didn’t help the wounded? This would be perfect training! She put on a pitiful frown as he helped himself up, slowly shaking his head at his apology. He bowed to her, and she took the opportunity to try (and fail) to see his injury. “It’s not, I guess. I didn’t know you had to actually ask to hold a spot. I’m still getting the hang of things here.” And life outside of the mansion in general. Who knew people had to share? “Don’t worry about that for now, though. That looked like it roughed you up a bit. Don’t you want to go see a nurse? Or at least get some ice. Don’t want a big old bump on your head now, do you?” She wasn’t just asking because it would get him away from her spot. Of course not. “I’m not much of a nurse, and I also don’t know where the nurses are… But you should still check that out!”

There was this continuous familiar look in the girls eyes as he looked at Kirk. The sort of judging gaze that people gave him whenever he had done something stupid, or atleast something stupid according to them. A semi regular reaction from some of the students in his class. "Eh, no problem, you know! It`s just so the teachers and other students don`t find a random guy hanging out in their planned spot for training and what not!" Kirk however seemed to be ignoring it. After all, with her asking about it, it seemed like he had a good reason to maybe stick around! "Not that I have reserved this place, but "Early bird catches the worm!", hehe!" And he was definitely earlier one in this case!
After his bow, he noticed the girl glaring at his back. "What`s up?" The girl then proceeded to ask if he needed something. Yeah, he had been just rolling on the ground for a moment. However, he just waved his hand casually. "Nah, I get hurt pretty often. Comes with the training!" Couple of bruises were a daily occurence here. As long as they came from him doing something to himself accidentally, there was nothing to worry about! Besides, its not like the ball had hit him on the back of the head. He might have been knocked out if that was the case.
However, the girls insistence caused kirk to give in, and start checking it himself. "Eh, alright..." He proceeded to outright take his shirt off, and scratched his pouchy back, searching for some sort of painful part... although the girl would propably easily see a much redder spot on his pouch, near the rackets net. However, It didn`t even seem to be bruising up, and even touching it didn`t make Kirk flinch, just smile and shrug. "Heh, lucky me! It hit the pouch!" Perhaps it was the concentrated amount of bone and muscle in it, but it seemed to get hurt much less frequently than the rest of him. Also, if the force was too much it tended to just bend out of the way! In this case though, it just meant the situation could have been a bit worse. "I`ll just work that off as endurance training!" It was propably gonna happen again, after all. He shrugged with a chuckle.
However, she was still here to do her work out. And Kirk was the sort of person who didn`t want to stop sporty efforts of others. He usually wanted to join them! "So, what were you planning to do here?" He turned towards the wall for a moment as he proceeded to put his shirt back on in thought. He didn`t know many sports that would require an empty wall like this one. "You a shadowboxer or something?" He did remember doing that a couple of times. Easy to fight someone that doesn`t exist when you are a shrimp after all! "Maybe a parkour type...?" He fixed his shirt a little bit downwards. Admittedly, he should propably learn to climb up walls too eventually... albeit if he wanted to keep his weapons in hand, climbing up one handed seemed kind of stupid. And how would he even serve a ball for himself?
Then a weird idea hit him. "Or were you planning to do tennis too!?" She did look like some of the ones on tv, although with bit smaller arms. He looked at her with almost creepy amount of enthusiasm, waiting for her answer!

The boy seemed to think he was a comedian. Emi’s straight face suggested that she didn’t agree. She kept it up until he waved off his injuries. A raised eyebrow betrayed her thoughts. Was it really that easy for some of her peers? She wasn’t looking forward to getting injured, and there were no guarantees that she’d be able to keep training with a bruise, let alone fight. This guy, though… Maybe he didn’t know how to style his hair, but he clearly knew a thing or two about taking a hit. Considering that she hadn’t been in a fight since she was three years old…
That was an area she needed to do some catching up on.
Emi took a few steps to close the gap between them, ready to ask about this 'endurance training'. Her thoughts were quickly sidetracked; to her visible surprise, the boy decided to check his injuries by pulling his shirt off. “Wait… Not like that! You can’t do that!” Revealing yourself in front of a stranger – and a lady, at that? It was an undeniable social faux pas! It wouldn’t stop her from staring, though. Whether it was out of shock or curiosity was anybody’s guess. It didn’t take long for her eyes to find the boy’s quirk. Emi had to admit that she didn’t know the social etiquette regarding quirks. She was still new to the school, and before that the amount of ‘confirmed quirkers’ she’d spoken were pitifully few. She had no idea whether it was rude to ask about the growth on the boy’s back, but it didn’t stop her from staring. A cross between morbid curiosity and revulsion showed, and it took her a lot longer to gather herself that time around.
“What?” Baffled eyes snapped back to meet his. She realised too late that she must have looked like she’d never seen a quirk before. She’d seen it plenty of times before – that look of disgust bigots got when they witnessed a quirk in action. Her brow furrowed, and shame took the stage. “Sorry. You… caught me off guard for a second.” Her gaze fell to the floor. “I can’t say I’m used to seeing quirks in action yet. I shouldn’t be watching like that…” And maybe, just maybe, she might have been a little harsh on him from the start.
She questioned why he suddenly felt shy when it came to putting his clothes back on, but decided against pushing her luck by asking more questions. A better plan would be to give him the answers he sought, and find an excuse to leave before she managed to make herself look any worse. “I run. Sometimes I do target practice here too. Not much to it, but there’s not much you can train by yourself, with no equipment.” And no friends. “My climbing isn’t too bad, but I haven’t tried parkour in a while. Too dangerous.” She realised immediately after she spoke how lame it sounded for a hero-in-training to be worried about running, but hoped he wouldn’t notice.
“I… Not shadowboxing. Don’t know how.” She glanced at the racket poking out from his pouch, then met his eyes again. “Woah. Hey, calm down a little. I didn’t come here for tennis.” A pause. “…I’ve never played. Just watched some.” Some anime, which may have been an important detail. She’d never seen real tennis being played, but she’d figured out the basics from a sports series she fell asleep to one night. “I’ve always been more of a solo sports person.” More out of necessity than desire, but she didn’t look too enthused at his suggestion.

Kirk really didn`t know what to think about this girl. The judging glare from her continued on... Scanning him. Of course, she may have just been that worried about him being hurt. Even better of a reason for him to take his shirt off, to prove that he was just fine! However, instead he got the girl screaming at him "not like that!" "What, What!?" He asked all sorts of befuddled! This was propably the easiest way to see where he was hit! ...then it hit him like the ball from before. "Oh... OOH!" Putting the shirt back on got a mighty bit faster. Man, He really needed to think things through! "Sorry dudette!" It was not exactly one of his classmates he was talking to after all. With one of them there propably wouldn`t have been an issue.
...However, once again, she seemed to have fallen into her own thoughts... that or he had traumatized him proper. "Uh, you alright there!?" Why did his meetings with new folks always have to go like this? For some reason he ended up doing something awkward... However, soon enough she was apologizing to him instead for her own staring. He scratched his cheek and shrugged. "Eh, no problem! Honestly, in this business its a good thing to be gawked at, you know!" The mood in the air got a lot lighter. The only thing weird was that he was so amazed by HIS quirk of all things. Guess it was the fact, that it was so obviously open?
However, as soon as things got to the point of what the girl did, Kirk couldn`t help but smack his hands together in a loud clap, pointing towards her. "Ooooh! A fellow jogger!" He immediately got a bit closer. "I do the same thing! Run to school everyday, and have little warm-ups over the day with it, as well as run arounds in town to buy stuff! Usually also do squats!" He rubbed his shoulder. It didn`t really explain why she wanted to have the wall free, but for a fellow jogging enthusiast, he was ready to be a bit more open. Her being worried about lacking equipment made him nod his head in agreement. "Yeah, it`s a bit of a problem, that`s for sure..." He rolled the tennis ball on his finger very casually, looking towards it. "Heck, this gear is my own stuff. However, I think the school will soon have lots of gear for all of us!" The sports club would make sure of that!
Her saying, that she didn`t know how to shadowbox made him grin a bit wider. Its not like it was too hard. Literally just punch towards the wall! Although, her being worried about parkour did make him scratch his head. Guess she wasn`t as sporty as him... many in the school weren`t though, so he couldn`t judge her for it.
He did however, deflate a little bit, when she admitted she had never played tennis before... Welp, back to the drawing board. "That`s too bad..." Guess he had to continue just smacking the ball into the wall alone. However, before he could get back into it, she said almost magical words that rung in his earlobes "I am more of a solo sports person" "Solo sports person"
"Solo Sports!"
And with that an idea entered his brain! He snapped his fingers with a wide grin! "Well, why didn`t you say so!" Kirk proceeded to gently bounce the ball in his hand in the girls direction, assuming she would catch it, and in addition, swung the racket in his other hand so that the grip was towards her! "You see, there is this big ol`wall here! And I´ve been pounding a ball into it SOLO this entire time!" He straightened his arm, as he almost slid it across the wall to see if there was enough space. Eeyup, it was big enough! "This wall should be very much enough for the both of us to be hitting it, hehe!" He then proceeded to grip the other racket in his pocket and pulling it out like an oversized sword!
"It should also solve that issue if you wanting to use this wall too!" He smiled as invitingly as an excited jock could. "I promise you, it´s easy! And if you`ve done running, it pretty much works wonders in the same way!" He was trying to sell it as well as he could. Doing it alone was dull, but doing the sport with someone else who was struggling in it a little bit was a bit more fun! Although, it almost lead to it sounding like he was pleading. "Try it out atleast!"

Having to remind a boy to keep his short on in front of strangers shouldn’t have been on Emi’s list of things to do. Heck, she might have asked him to keep it off under better circumstances. So much would change if he had appealed to her vanity; for one, he would have been an awkward, adorkable young man, instead of an awkward bumbling young man. She didn’t look particularly impressed, but her expression grew less judgemental as he apologised, and even less so as he brushed off her rudeness. Confusion showed itself again. She was good at remembering slights against her, so to see the boy nonchalantly accept her stares… He either didn’t care much for it, or was more used to it than she knew.
Whichever it was, there wasn’t much time to dwell on it. A clap towards her snapped her back to reality again, with a brief annoyed look. Was he just oblivious to her, or not bothered by it until she said something? “Well, I don’t run that much…” Enough to keep her figure, and little more – though he could guess that much by looking at her. “You look and sound like you’re really into it. I’m just trying to not get fat. Buying my own stuff isn’t a terrible idea, though. Might not be needed it the school is looking into it, but at least then I won’t have to share.”
Even without speaking, she could see that he wanted to find some common ground between them. Playing games with strangers wasn’t on Emi’s agenda for the day, but he was both unwilling to leave ‘her’ spot and keen on them doing something together. Before she knew it, the boy’s ball was bouncing her way. Picking it up was no trouble, but she didn’t look like she was completely following his train of thought. Then it all came together. Who wouldn’t want to play sports with the pretty new girl? Could she really blame him for being so eager when she had obviously caught his eye? His ‘flattery’ brought a satisfied smile onto his face as he proposed they practiced separately… together. “Alright, alright… I’ll bite. You win. We can play, since you really want to.” She glanced at the wall. “If there’s two of us, isn’t that just… tennis? Minus the net, I guess. Do we really need a wall to add more steps to it? Or…” She paused. “Maybe we could use the wall instead of a net? I don’t know, I’m not a tennis expert.” She was glad that the boy offered his racket; she didn’t know what pouch gunk felt like, or if it even existed, but she wasn’t about to grab anything that had been in there and find out.
“And I’m not dudette. My name is Emi Ryoko Tachibana.” She tilted her head upwards a little more as she spoke, a hint of confidence – or superiority – audible as she spoke her name. “U.A. student, content creator and soon-to-be tennis star…!” She tossed the ball up into the air in front of her, ready to kick off their little game.
Swing, and a miss. The ball anticlimactically hit the floor. Emi gave it a blank stare, and as she turned to her rival, her eyes slowly squinted “That… That one didn’t count.” She reached down and scooped up the ball, aimed again, and hit! Sort of. The ball connected with the racquet’s beam, sending it downwards, away from both the wall and her tennis partner. “The hell? My aim is great!” Which was true, but that didn’t mean much when she’d almost never swung a bat, let alone a racquet. Still, that logic did nothing to help Emi’s pride. “Just… give me a second. Ball’s broken.” It was hard to miss the irritation, both on her face and in her voice as she went to collect the ball. Instead of opting for a third attempt, she returned to his side and offered him the ball. “You start. I want to see how you do it.” Hopefully, her thinly-veiled attempt to avoid embarrassing herself would go off without a hitch.

Kirk couldn`t help but nod at the girl, as she brought up buying her own stuff as an option. With her being much more of a beginner than he had expected at first, some sports item might push her into the direction of working out more. Although just the mention of her doing it just to not get fat, made Kirk look at her like she was an alien for a second. You needed food to build up muscle! Why wouldn`t you want to do that. Then again, she did look like the sort of girl who didn`t want her figure to be "ruined" by a six pack. He proceeded to just shrug with a chuckle. "Yeah, at my pace I don`t get fat too easily!" Perhaps she just didn`t work out enough?
However, all this little confusion vanished from his tiny brain, once the girl grabbed the ball with clear ease. it seemed like she was happy to join him in playing some tennis! Well, the wall kind. His excitement was clear, with how wide his smile was and how energetic his body seemed to get with it. "Great!" Now, his training should be much more enjoyable! With another "newbie" next to him, learning with him, it should be easy! Although, she proceeded to ask some extra questions beforehand... Some of them a bit more confusing than the others. "Yeah?" Of course, it would be tennis. However with how strongly she was suggesting using the WALL as the net, Kirk couldn´t help but be hilarified. Come on now, launching a ball over a school wall? thats ridiculous!
Until he got what she meant. "Well, that is the plan! But you know, since you haven`t done this before, I thought you would like to see how it works first!" If he went full power towards her immediately, she would propably end up with WAY more bruises than he had. Although, since she was here, she was propably ready for bit rougher work. "If you are sure, I guess we can...!" But before he could even finish his sentence, the girl had introduced herself magnificently, made a glorious pose, layed on the table all her current and later accomplishments, including tennis stardom, which made kirk visibly a bit a hyped as he watched in excitement at the girl, squatting a little in preparation, as she threw the ball in the air, swung her racket...!
...Aaand missed by a wide margin... There was this awkward moment of silence, as they both just stared at the ball. Kirk outright flinched a little bit when she brought up, that "it didn`t count". "O-of course!" For a moment he had forgotten she was new at this. The second try wasn`t much better, and Kirk proceeded to scratch his head, whilst she proceeded to outright mock the ball... How can you "break" a ball? He did remember this one time he hit a ball so hard it bent out of shape, but it flew just fine. Albeit, that was a baseball. However, it was clear she was a bit mad about it, as she passed the ball to him, asking him to show her how its done. He blinked a couple of times, before nodding. "Alright."
He proceeded to walk a bit farther away from Emi, bouncing the ball against the ground for a moment. Well that was an awkward start... She was going for a full on power blow! It was propably better to just do what she asked. He didn`t wanna scare her from trying it again after all! "There is really only one rule in tennis, from what I´ve seen: Keep your eyes on the ball! From the start till the end!" That`s how he had learned it. "If you wanna start with power, make sure you throw the ball high enough, so you can see the ball and prepare to hit it! But if you just wanna get things started, there is an easier way!" He held the ball in his left hand, which he straightened forward, as he swung his right hand backwards a bit. Then, he let the ball go, as he swung and hit the ball. The speed compared to his last effort was very much so lackluster, but it did bounce back. As he smacked the ball against the ground with his racket, it bounced into the air, which allowed him to grab it easy. "Since if you miss, it just bounces back up into the air, it sort of allows you another try! If you drop it from high enough that is!" He rubbed his neck. "Doesn`t really have that "SURPRISE!" factor to it though, if you get me." Reason why he never used it back when he played more. His efforts usually concentrated more on power than technique... but luckily some technique stuck!
He bounced the ball back towards Emi, as he realized something. "Oh yeah! My name is Kirk! KIRK BLUSTER!" He stopped momentarily almost thoughtful after his heroic sounding introduction. Then, he got another idea, as he bumped his fist against his chest! "Class 1-C:s specialized sportsman!" Atleast he thought that was a proper way to introduce himself! "Anyways, try and bounce the ball back and forth from the wall for a little while! OH, and if you worry about the balls, don`t hehe..." he shoved his hand back into his pouch, as he pulled out another ball. "I have a tubes worth stuck in here!"

The girl seemed to be struggling to meet the boy’s eyes. Something told her that she should already know this. How else would a boy like him have such a such a good understanding of the sport? There was, of course, the perfectly logical explanation – that he very clearly put a lot of time and effort into exercising. Unfortunately for them both, emotions rarely gave logic the time of day, so pride continued to colour her thoughts.
At the very least, Kirk didn’t show even a hint of condescendence. That would have been a fantastic way to ruin her mood, but he was awfully accepting of her cluelessness. Kind, even. He hadn’t even commented on her total failure. So of course, she was suspicious, watching his demonstration with narrowed eyes. Why wasn’t he making fun of her? Was he doing it in his head? Waiting to text his friends about it after? Well, she wasn’t about to add fuel to the fire. Even if she wasn’t looking right at him, she listened intently, and her gaze followed the ball’s every movement.
“Eyes on the ball. Throw high, learn the movement. Kirk Bluster. Bouncy ball. Got it.” She blinked. Maybe that wasn’t the exact message he’d meant to send, but she wasn’t leaving him much of an opportunity to correct her. She caught the ball, and (after a brief glance at his quirky introduction), she turned back to the wall.
As soon as a foreign object wasn’t involved, Emi’s skill improved tremendously. Though the ‘specialised sportsman’ might not have believed it (and who would blame him after that first display?), hand-eye coordination and marksmanship were skills she’d trained for several years. You didn’t need a partner to throw, after all, and so she’d been able to practice fairly often. In no time at all she had a rhythm going, throwing the ball in an arc to the wall, only for it to hit the wall, bounce against the floor and leap into her awaiting palm. "No worries. It's easy. A baby could do it, right?" Clearly, the ball wasn’t as broken as she claimed, but she wasn’t about to say that.
Instead, she readied the racket, stared down the ball and tossed it into the air. The world seemed to move in slow motion as she tracked her target. In that moment, nothing else mattered besides defending her pride. She let the ball fly, swung, and… hit! The ball was sent flying to the wall, bouncing against it and over towards Kirk. Well, ‘towards him’ was debatable – in fact, it would miss by a long shot if he didn’t move quickly. That wasn’t Emi’s problem, though. She’d made a step in the right direction, and saved herself more embarrassment, so all was right with the world.

It seemed like Kirks explanations were hitting a homerun with his audience! Her judging gaze had slowly turned into one of actual genuine intrigue. Heck, her eyes followed the ball perfectly, as he did his simple presentation! And that could only mean that she was into it, right? Atleast that`s what Kirk thought. Even with her answer being what it was, snappy and quick, it wasn`t enough to deter Kirks pride in himself for succesfully explaining something to someone so quickly.
After she grabbed the ball, she immediately proceeded to bounce it against the wall. Was she already trying to see how much force it for the ball to bounce back!? Kirk couldn`t help but be intrigued himself, like a teacher looking at their student with a wide smile! His eyes followed the ball, as she kept repeating the motion for a while, until it snapped back towards her... as she said something that propably hit him way harder than it should have. "A baby could do it, right?" Huh? What was that? Was she seriously calling the thing she was doing easy right after failing at it spectacularly? Kirk gave a quick head tip, until he straightened up, and opened his mouth. "Well, I know atleast, that I hit way harder than a baby!" The sentence sounded jokey in tone, yet to Kirk, it felt like a defensive phrase. Calling a sport easy from the get go...
However, this mildly annoying feeling poofed away almost immediately, as she proceeded to do things exactly as he had told her to do them. He squatted a little bit, looking intently, as she threw her ball high up into the air, and finally got a successful hit, As it flew straight into the wall. "That`s the good stuff!" He cheered! However, the hit on the wall proceeded to instead make it bounce towards him, instead of back towards her. But Kirk, was way more than happy to return it with a relaxed swing of the racket, as the bounce of it echoed a bit in the room. "Keep working at it and you`ve got it!"
For a little while he just glared at the girl doing her thing, returning the ball whenever it flew in an unintended direction. Despite the ball occasionally falling, She was really improving quickly. And eventually the continuous ball returning made Kirk instinctively join in, happily putting his all into the sport as usual! "Just call it a bit of extra challenge for ya!" And with that, the situation had become pretty much what he had wanted from the start: a healthy competition between two individuals, that was also a heck of a work out at the same time! Sweat was propably growing on both of their foreheads, and Kirk couldn`t have been more content and relaxed about the situation.
However, what that situation he had really wanted also included, was him training to use the rackets at their full potential... and with how relaxed he was, the idea of having an actual foe to try the technique on was filling his arm with an itch... So as he hit the ball... "BIG ONE INCOMING!" Now, all his bros knew what this meant. He was going to go full power! FULL ON EFFORT! and he was propably not gonna stop, unless something semi-important happened! And with that, after the following blow from Emi, he pulled his arm far back, as his grip and muscles on it tightened... "Here comes the...!" As he SWUNG his arm with full might against the ball! "BOOM!"
The ball almost flattened itself against the wall! it was a wonder it hadn`t exploded, as it bounced from it at insane speeds towards Emis side! There was one thing Kirk knew how to do really well... and it was how to launch and hit things, whatever the sport he did!

Hits harder than a baby? Emi Couldn’t deny that. The boy looked to be built for strength. And endurance. And stamina, and intimidation… Really, she didn’t know if all those muscles had any specific purpose, but she could at least rule off the last one. Bullying anybody, with his attitude? He might have been a ‘specialised sportsman’, but she couldn’t help but imagine him tripping over himself – literally and figuratively – as soon as fear tactics were involved. He seemed… a little too nice for that, even with part of her mind trying to convince her that it was just an act. Naïve, maybe?
Perhaps it was a testament to her skill that she was able to mull over the novelty that was Kirk as she continued the volley. Maybe it was the fact that at the end of the day, the racket was the only complication in an otherwise simple skill (or a bit of both). Regardless of the reason, her makeshift tutor had something work celebrating – progress.
Once she’d nailed down hitting the ball, she had to work on aiming! Consistency was key, she quickly realised. It wasn’t much different from throwing with her hands, just… not. Kirk was there to save the day whenever she slipped up, but those were far and few between. Before long, she had the basics of tennis down! So of course, that was when he tried to throw her for a loop. “Eh?” ‘Big one? Ohnonono- “Nono-wait-hold-tight-for-“ She returned the ball, because missing meant failure, but out of the corner of her eye, she could see the boy gearing up for a grand slam. Her training hadn’t prepared her for power plays! Apparently, Kirk thought there and then was as good a time as any to learn, and her objections would do nothing to change that.
He hit the ball, and for a split-second, it seemed to compress itself against the wall. Was that really necessary?! It was like something right out of an anime. Anime…! She had a backup plan. The ball was already returning to her – well, roughly to her area. Her training didn’t change that following the path of a moving object was always going to be tricky. Still, she tried. Her racket arm reached out to catch a speeding ball, but she realised too late that she had miscalculated. It was going to whip straight past her and into the land of failure. Unless…
Unless she used a special move. If there was one thing she’d picked up from that sports anime, it was that every important character had their special move for moments exactly like these! It was the make or break, the do or die moment… And she wasn’t about to miss it. She narrowed her eyes.
A twitch of her other pinky was barely noticeable, but its result was. The ball was suddenly met by a barrier - a hovering crystalline cube that couldn’t possibly have been there a moment before. Even if it was no bigger than her palm, it would have been hard to miss a translucent white block hovering by her. It cracked on impact, but served its purpose well enough. Her target was deflected, and sent back to the wall at a rather wide arc. The speed he’d demanded of her meant that she hadn’t had time to focus on an accurate return, but it seemed that she’d passed his test! “Not even close, baybeeee!” He didn’t have to look; her smug smile was practically audible.

The small amount of worried nos couldn`t help but make Kirk chuckle and smile a bit. He already had his foe scared of him just from informing that it was coming! However, even that feeling didn`t compare to the energy and pride he felt, as the tremor of the ball hitting his racket shook him to the very core! These kinds of blows were the sort that decided games back in America. be quick or be dead was the usual style of things! Heck, he was so sure he had succeeded, that he actually straightened his back a little to relax, while twisting his neck a bit as stretching.
...So you can imagine his surprise when instead of hearing the girl saying something about dust getting in her eye, he heard a crackle of something hard, which made him turn his head in the direction of the girl. It was never exactly a well meaning sound. In this case, it meant that she had returned the ball, and mighty easily too seemingly! "W-wha?!" At this point he noticed the ball, which after bouncing to the wall had barely enough strength left to really make it over to his side at decent enough speed. Yet with how relaxed he was, The rushed swing he made missed, as the ball rolled away... And the girl proceeded taunt at him. "...Yeah! You really got me that time!" He scratched the back of his head befuddled, trying to force a smile. Had he really just lost a round so easily to a newbie? Right after going full power for just a moment?
Instead of going and picking up the ball, he pulled the tube out of his back, popped its lid, and took a ball from it. "I guess you used your quirk to return it? I was already scared I hit you and broke a bone or something!" As silly as Kirk seemed, he was not dumb. A crunch like that couldn`t have come from her just hitting the ball with her racket, except if it was broken. Perhaps she had coated it in something? He had no idea what she had done, but that had to be it! Maybe she had done like Maxi and just lifted an icewall! The thoughts made him feel a bit calmer atleast... And then he got an idea!
"You know what? Keep using it! Will make for a good quirk training on the side, don`t you think?!" He said, encouragingly. He rolled his shoulder in its socket. "Allows me to train proper too!" That`s it! The quirk was just sort of a handicap for her so she could keep up with his bit stronger blows! Would be more useful and better for both of them! Besides, since she already knew the basics AND she was proud about surviving his first harder blow, they were definitely ready for the next step He definitely didn`t just feel a bit cheated on... not at all. "Besides, my quirk really doesn`t give me advantage in this, so no need to worry about me just suddenly pulling a secret weapon out of it, hehe..." Not at all...
With that, he took glance at Emi as he bounced the ball against the ground for a moment. "You ready? This time: 100% EFFORT!" He flexed his arm, as he proceeded to throw the ball into the air, and slammed it in a similar fashion as previously, at full power, with it bouncing towards her. However, this time instead of it being just a one time thing, whenever the ball bounced back, he returned it at very similar levels of power, trying to ignore how she actually returned the ball, almost like before when he had played by himself. He was actually taking this very seriously now!

The cracked construct fell to the ground, lifeless. The drop shattered her saviour into a mix of glass-like shards and small mounds of white grains. If Emi’s life was an anime, defeating the sports king at his own game would be the end of a stellar episode. The underdog had handily defeated an overconfident opponent, and proven herself as a serious fighter. It all sounded great, if one ignored her blatant cheating. Fortunately, Emi didn’t have to ignore it – as far as she knew, that was how tennis was played. “Nah, don’t worry about it! I told you, a baby could hit a ball. Besides, it’d be really embarrassing if I got beaten up by one. At that point, I’d probably drop out so I never had to explain what happened to anybody.” She stuck her tongue out at him a little – a cheeky gesture, no doubt brought on by her victory.
“But yeah, that’s my special! The tide-turner. Game-changer. Good ol’ reliable- Wait, what?” Her confidence fled the scene with a hard blink. Why was he happy about that? The more he spoke, the clearer it became – to him, this was just another challenge. One he was all too happy to accept. Worse still, he still thought he was going easy on her. He was absolutely right, of course, but try telling that to a proud person that wasn’t used to losing. Soon enough, the smirk was back. “Alright, you think you can keep it up? That’s the kind of attitude I like to hear!” She readied her bat, eyes focused on Kirk, and then the wall. If he was going to give it her all, then she would have to do the same! …At least, that was what she told herself, as if it hadn’t taken everything she had just to keep up with him going easy on her.
The ball slammed against the wall, but this time she was ready. Sort of. Not really. A quick stretch allowed her to return the ball, but without much care for planning her angle. Worse still, that was just the first shot; struggling with that didn’t bode well for the rest of the volley. The boy wasn’t giving her any time to breathe, and in no time at all, the ball had returned. She reached to strike it again, only for it to hit the bumper guard. It was a hit, but barely a success. The ball bounced out away from them both, clearly ‘out of bounds’.
At first, she was silent – a fairly telling reaction on its own. She walked off, bent down and slowly picked up the ball. “…We’ll keep going,” she called, barely keeping the displeasure out of her voice. Without waiting for a reply, she threw the ball up and served.
Needless to say, it was a thrashing. Her punishment for her arrogance was a masterclass with a seasoned player. Emi very quickly learned that a few minutes of training and a quirk simply couldn’t compare with years of training. For most people, this would make perfect sense, but being spoiled often meant missing out on basic life lessons.
With every missed serve, her eyebrows drew closer together. With every summoned crystalline wall that still somehow missed the ball, she had a lot less comments to make. And with every walk of shame to collect the ball, her steps became a little heavier. It probably wouldn’t come as a surprise to him when she called: “Let’s take a break.” Her walking off, however, but have been a little unexpected.
She returned less than a minute later, with a large bottle of water in one hand and several sachets of… something, in the other. They looked like they could have been picked from a diner, even if she looked like the type that would never let herself get caught in one. She plopped herself on the ground a few feet away from Kirk, glaring daggers at the bottle as she pulled off the cap. Apparently, water-drinking was her quirk all along. She guzzled half a litre before stopping to breathe, and then resigned herself to glaring at the ground.

There was a minor flinch from Kirk, as the weird shattered structure fell to the ground and broke to pieces... Well that small mystery was quickly solved! Some kind of structure creation thing, kind of like alexs. Great for something like this... And the more the girl taunted towards him, the harder it got for Kirk to keep his temper intact. Was she literally calling HIM a baby now? "Y-Yeah, I mean... a baby wouldn`t be any sort of a challenge in a game like this, would they?!" Kirk wasn`t a baby! Heck, he had given her a hard time just a moment ago! He shook his head. No, in sports, you gotta lead by example... And well, atleast it kept her motivated! Even if her special move was literally against the rules... Ugh...
Now, getting taunted wasn`t really anything new for Kirk. His friends always did it. It got people hype, and interested in whatever challenge was coming up, be it with Darren or Tetsuko! However, he couldn`t shake the mild feeling that he was really being looked down upon. It was way harder to answer a taunt when it didn`t come from a friendly source... However, as it went in sports, if he wanted to make somebodies insults mean nothing, he just had to show that he had the guts! Besides, she was the one getting the handicap! "As do I!" At this point, the girl really embodied the spirit of the sport! And as the match started, he was so motivated you could feel it in his steps, with little slicks of his sneakers echoing in the room...
...For the pitch and one return that is, as the ball ended up getting past her with relative ease. "1-1!" He shouted excitedly, already feeling a bit better! He didn`t even notice the girl on this rounds losers side being down about the result, as she just said exactly what he was expecting for her to say! "Of course!" These were always handled in best of threes! It would be a fluke to quit after getting into a draw!
However, as time passed, instead of the competition being a challenging romp between them, it instead became a repeated effort of Kirk winning points! Score kept changing more and more in his favour! 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 1-5, 1-6... It kept on happening! And even with her quirk, She didn`t stand a chance! However, instead of even considering holding back again, he kept on pushing forward! Not to get a good work out no, but instead, to feel that deserved victory over his prideful enemy! Each one of the points felt great! He felt like shouting with excitement, and bouncing around, as the difference in their points rose higher and higher!
And then she asked for a break. "Sure!" He wiped sweat off of his forehead, smiling the widest grin that the girl had propably seen on him today! He fell on his backside, and just huffed for a little while. That just felt absolutely great! Now she could definitely not call him a baby anymore!
The girl very quickly returned with a water bottle and some food in hand. Oh yeah, they had been training for quite a while now haven`t they? He sank his arm into his pouch and pulled out his own bottle... all though, looking at Emis own little pile of food made his stomach crumble. Of course he forgot to take some snacks with him... However, it seemed like the girl was way more thirsty than he was, and then proceeded to just sadly look towards the ground. Then it hit him. Oh yeah, she wasnt used to this sort of training! "Well deserved prize for this match to be honest!" Kirk was in noticeably better mood now. Almost too much so! "For a first timer you lasted for a really long time! Dunno if I was nearly as good when I started!" He took a sip of water. Taking what kind of shrimp he himself was before starting to do sports proper, he could relate!
He scooted a bit closer to her, and gently landed his hand onto her shoulder. "Makes for one heck of a warm-up doesn`t it, hehe!?" It was literally like his head had turned upside down thoughtsvise. He was actually proud of her for continuing this for so long! "Take your time! I can wait for the round 3!" After all this, he proceeded to just stand up and drink his water, while stretching a little bit in between sips. He had never been the sort of guy to enjoy staying still for long. However, he was gonna wait till she was ready.
After all... it would have been unfair to her othervise!
