I see you through the flood See you through the fire See you through the storms-a-raging
❧ With the military ground open for quirk-using civilians like him, Yoru, of course, was more than excited to check out the commotion they brought about. It wasn’t everyday he could observe such facilities, not to mention take part in what they had to offer. While he wasn’t exactly fond of the strictness, he was quite interested in their training methods – especially since his main hobby, parkour, had some loose ties-in with the training of soldiers.
He barely glanced over the research area, and instead beelined right to where he could find some action. It wasn’t hard to find a place where he could get some active training and experience with fighting or other physical activity. The grunting and shouting was a dead giveaway to where the action was happening, and that was what drawn Yoru in. At first, for about ten minutes, he was content with looking around and observing what all the military personnel and the quirk-using civilians were doing, but it all became quickly boring to just watch. He wanted in, and wanted in preferably half an hour ago.
There were lines to be patiently waited out, and Yoru would have no problem with that if it didn’t include being “patient”. The fighting cages and the boxing rings seemed to be popular enough that a crowd had already formed and it appeared that everyone wanted a turn. And despite the popular opinion, he wasn’t rude enough to cut in line.
Roaming further ahead to find something with relatively less people that he could take part in, Yoru zoomed in on a relatively clear spot just beside the long obstacle course the military set up. Memories of his first days at U.A. flashed before him, when he was set up to do a rather punishing obstacle course with his classmate Rin, though that was more of a sucky wipe-out course rather than anything else. Getting muddy and drenched just because the machinery of the obstacles were set to make it harder for the students was a low blow, and he was still angry at the tube labyrinth he had to go through blindly.
This one, however, seemed to be normal. To military standards at least. And most importantly, it was out in the open and did not include small tubes he would need to crawl into. There appeared to be no line there, but a soldier was announcing it was free to try, and the time with which the course was completed would be evaluated in the end. Perfect. Yoru wanted a clear idea on his base speed so he could improve his physical capabilities that much better. He was known for maneuverability and swiftness and he wanted to keep honing that part of his bodily prowess to keep himself in check.
“I’m in!” He jumped right forward to the soldier, orange eyes shining with excitement in trying out the standard military obstacle course for a change. “Get that timer ready, I am burning to go!” He would applaud himself for the pun, but the soldier was probably not aware of his quirk, and Yoru hadn’t had his harmless flame crown active either. This way, it just stayed as a silly way to announce his readiness for the course. “You know what, let’s make it a race. Two birds with one stone! Who wants to go against me?” He added a bit louder and looked around at soldiers and civilians equally to see if someone would be up for the challenge. It is always more fun to do it in pairs or groups rather than alone, and he wouldn’t mind whoever his partner turned out to be.
Except if it was someone annoying.

“Me!” said someone annoying.
The obstacle course was fun. He ran it the first day with Oliver. It was a good workout, but it made him realize one thing. He had been trying to improve the power output and endurance of his quirk through the practice of, among other things, skydiving without a parachute while hugging the class president -- it was complicated.
While he definitely needed to improve the output of his momentum generation should he wish to fight the likes of Jaz, the obstacle course reminded him that he needed finer control as well. He had always unconsciously figured that sometimes, a lesser amount of power meant that he could direct it better, the same way a racecar driver braked before a corner so as to clear it faster.
Not only that, but clambering over an obstacle with small activations of his power kept him unpredictable and conserved stamina. Any fighter worth its salt knew how important these things were. As such, he decided to check out the obstacle course again. It was good practice; practice that he desperately needed.
And today, he spotted the perfect person to practice with, or probably against, given both their relationship and his proclamation which Darren readily answered. He walked up to the starting line, side by side with Yoruhi. He greeted him with a bow that was more mocking than respectful.
“My liege,” he satirized in a faux-polite tone. “I came to thee on thine fhine day thee challenge thine excellence thy Monkey King henceforth to a race for thine crown.” It was becoming increasingly clear that Darren had little to no idea about how to speak politely, but that much was probably already clear as day to the fiery boy of 1-A.
The blonde delinquent of 1-C smiled, and for a second a serious look passed over his eyes. It was a challenge, after all, and he hated losing in both fights and contests of speed. It was personal. He was the god damn speedster of UA, and he wasn’t about to get overtaken by a monkey boy, god damn it.
And to top it off, Yoruhi was a 1-A kid. While he launched the idea of inter-class wars as a joke, before Alex took it way too seriously, the class did feature some of the strongest students in school. He knew his classmates would be disappointed if he lost here.
“Ready when you are,” he said mustering his most confident smile.

I see you through the flood See you through the fire See you through the storms-a-raging
❧ No.
Just. No.
He knew that voice, he knew who it belonged to, and he didn’t want to deal with that kind of annoying bastard right now. What kind of offense did he make against Lady Luck for her to hate him and punish him this way?
He rolled his eyes so hard at Darren’s mockingly archaic words that they almost fell out of his head. “Oh, dear God!” He held a hand against his forehead, more as a dramatic pose to signify his disappointment better. He was not behind Darren when it came to dramatic overreactions, but his annoyance, at least, was absolutely real. “Are you serious?”
Wait, this might actually be perfect. With such an annoying opponent, Yoru will at least be able to take the competition more or less seriously. Aside from that, he did hear that Darren was actually among the top ten students at U.A., even though Yoru could care less about what a subjective ranking system said.
“My crown isn’t something you would be able to wear.” He murmured, just to himself, partially expecting Darren not to pay attention and not to hear it anyway. If Yoru considered his flame crown a literal crown, he would die from drowning before he would let anyone else have it. Then again, probably only other flame quirkers would be able to imitate that harmless flame he had. And anyway, this blonde monkey was probably not even aware of what quirk he had. Not that Yoru had an advantage in that part either, he knew horse poop about Darren’s abilities, despite meeting with him and witnessing him doing... something. Yoru was no expert on the mechanics of quirks, and he wouldn’t be able to remember long explanations anyway. Darren can move fast. That was about as much as he knew of him.
“You know what? Fine. You’re on!” Turning toward the obstacle course area, Yoru was searching for the most fun and preferably hardest route toward the goal. The obstacles were scattered in a wide area, and there was not a set order to complete them. The runners were able to choose where to go, but the instructors would obviously evaluate their time depending on how they chose to go about this. And they probably judged their characters by seeing what obstacle they chose to tackle as well. Yoru wouldn’t disappoint. He would go all the way.
Even though Yoru’s general speed wasn’t too well-developed, his experience with parkour gave him the dexterity and advantage in various terrains, especially one such as this. The first obstacles were huge railings made of logs to climb, taller than an average man. Yoru already planned to climb the first and then jump from one to the other to clear it. The second one was a giant ladder, which will be a piece of cake with his ability to climb. Speed was overrated, if someone didn’t have the fine-tuned reflexes and maneuverability to keep the body in check. Yoru had exactly that, and he will show this blonde monkey what he was made of.
Once they were given the prompt to start, Yoru wasn’t one to hesitate, he would go for the log railings to climb and jump them, and then head for the giant ladder. He was not planning to use his quirk right from the start. He didn’t yet see the reason to go at it full force, for now, his body’s natural abilities were enough. His speed was that of a normal human’s, but the grace and ease with which he moved and completed the obstacles would make it obvious that he has experience. He wasn’t really paying attention to Darren either, even though he was extremely curious if the annoying fellow would end up being a fun rival or not.

“Dead serious,” Darren said with a smile and a very not serious tone. I think that guy hates me, he thought to himself, ever since that thing with the redhead in Support Studies. He recalled that he saw her holding hands with a white-haired boy once. Doing nothing to help his reputation in Yoruhi’s eyes, he decided to poke fun at him when he saw him grumble something to himself. His ever-annoying elbow poked at the fire boy’s ribs.
“Hey now, Dumpster Fire, don’t be miffed. If you love her, let her go,” he said, doubling down on the overly dramatic gestures, not even sure if Yoru would even understand what he was talking about. Nothing about his voice, his words or the nickname he just found him spoke of respect, compassion or empathy. It was just Darren being Darren, ever pushing the boundaries of shitposting out of the internet and into real life.
Nonetheless, Dumpster Fire took him up on the challenge. Soon, they lined up and a private shouted a countdown. Before he could fire the blank that would announce the beginning of the race, Darren turned to Yoruhi, and for the first time, he addressed him in a tone that was a little serious. “By the way, nice job at the music night.” He didn’t need or want to say more; the 1-A boy knew what he was talking about. A loud bang was heard, and they were off.
Since the obstacles had no particular order, the delinquent followed, letting Yoruhi take the lead. He wasn’t using his quirk, so in the interest of fairness and a fun contest, Darren didn’t either.
Yoruhi was a little faster when they ran, probably thanks to his parkour experience. Darren ran slower, with the rhythmical breathing of a boxer doing his roadwork. Soon they were upon the first obstacle, a series of railings like those which could be found surrounding stairs. Dumpster fire leapt over them gracefully. Darren grabbed it and pulled himself over forcefully. Again, Yoruhi was a little faster. The delinquent wouldn’t waste any time and was on the pursuit once again, his breathing like the buzzing of a fly behind the fiery boy’s back.
The next obstacle was a ladder, a giant wooden one. They has to clamber to the top, get their legs over and clamber down. Darren jumped on the ladder a second after the other kid and started climbing vigorously.
Yoru was a quick bastard, he had to give him that, but Darren was a tenacious one. If the quick bastard wanted the keep the lead, he’d have to contend with an annoying bastard on his heels.

I see you through the flood See you through the fire See you through the storms-a-raging
❧ “...If you love her, let her go.”
What.
With a deadpan expression, Yoru stared at Darren, wondering just what this monkey was referring to. Mentally, he tried to think back of all the times he was with a girl, and the one and only unfortunate occasion when he met with Darren, and only found one overlapping event that matched both criteria. But even if he remembered the time they tried to teach Chise to climb a tree, he couldn’t connect the reference. Darren was left with no reaction, only another glare. Oh, whatever. He was probably just spouting nonsense.
However, there was one reference he could connect to memory with more certainty. The music night. He glanced, surprise evident in his eyes, toward Darren before shooting out and into the obstacle course. He wanted to clear his head but couldn’t, even though he tried to give himself into the feeling of freedom he felt while running, while climbing. He had the upper hand, he noticed, but still, the memory of that night was haunting, made him afraid for the mental state of a friend. He dismissed the thought. He needed to only focus on the run. Nothing else existed right now.
“Nice noise you made at the music night.” He jabbed, meaning the show Darren and his band put together that night. Even after getting off the stage when Ryuusei finished his performance, they remained around and saw the rest of the attendants, including Darren. His voice was sarcastic, as if he was joking and didn’t enjoy it, even though it was the contrary. No need to tell Darren that though.
If Yoruhi was grace and movement and speed, Darren was force, muscle and strength. They both went with a steady pace, fitting for their own style. They seemed to match quite well, Yoru noticed. Not many people could keep up with him without quirks, and though he suspected Darren to have some prior experience with obstacle courses, if not parkour itself, he had to admit the other’s movements were surprisingly well-toned. A worthy opponent, indeed. Yoru was fine having someone at his toes. That just urged him to go that much faster.
On top of the ladder, he couldn’t help but grin at the excitement he could feel building up. This was much different than the time he spent with Ryuusei in the park. There, he was more of a teacher, showing his classmates the ropes and tricks of parkour. Instead this was an actual race, where he wasn’t sure he would be able to win, and so, decided to go all out. He could go to his heart’s content without looking back to see how the running partner was faring.
Instead of climbing, he nearly jumped down the pegs of the ladder, skipping the last three altogether, and continuing forward as soon as his feet touched the ground.
The next obstacle was a rope bridge, knowingly unsteady. Yoru didn’t bat an eye as he stepped on its edge. Instead of running normally, he placed one leg in front of the other and galloped through. The jumping movements didn’t make the bridge any less steadier, but it made it more predictable. He didn’t have to slow down to adjust his movements to the bridge’s, instead he forced it to do what he wanted it to. As if saying, ‘you can’t stop me from going through, you can not kill my vibe’. Something like this won’t stop him, not even if Darren’s steps messed up the whole pace. He was through before he could think about it.
For the next, a net made of wires were spread long above the ground, they had to crawl through if they wanted to complete this one. Ugh, dirt. Gross. He had experience with it on his very first obstacle course with Rin. Mud was ugly, but if it isn’t as wet as that one was, maybe he would be able to dry himself with his own heat during the run. There was only a second of a falter before he dropped and started crawling. It was drier than he thought at first. No need for a change of clothes after. His hood was occasionally caught in the wires, gaining more and more holes by the moment, but he could care less about its state. Half of the time, he burned them off of himself anyway. His pace was still steady, and his quirk was not activated, but he definitely enjoyed this attempt to clear the course.

It seemed like Darren’s girl-related jokes hit the wall that was Yoruhi’s sense of humor and fell flat on the ground. Too bad, shrugged the delinquent. He was confident in his ability to find another way to poke fun at Yoruhi, eventually. He was a renowned expert on the subject.
Maybe there was an angle with the music night, given Yoruhi's surprised reaction right as they broke into their initial acceleration. He sarcastically commented on the “noise” they had played that night, which made Darren grin. “Likewise,” he answered, referring to the drum break he’d used to shut everyone up. It had been very rock n’ roll. “Come bang those drugs with us anytime. Maybe Levi will stop bitching at me and my hands if we have a drummer.”
There was no more time for talking or shit-talking however as they reached the first obstacles. As expected, Yoru was no slouch. Jumping over those bars seemed like it was second nature to him, and he didn’t bother with the last three steps of the ladder, jumping off and landing smoothly, barely breaking up his pace over the obstacles.
Darren’s own style of parkour was a lot rougher than his opponent in the lead. In fact, it would even be a little insulting to its practitioners to call what he was doing “parkour”. He lost a few precious seconds over the bars, as jumping was something he usually did with his quirk. He had to catch up over the ladder, and he had an idea: if Yoru was skipping three bars, then he would skip four!
This ‘genius’ plan in mind, the delinquent jumped off the ladder with a war cry. It was quite the height to fall off from, enough that a bad landing might cause a serious injury, but Darren was used to seeing the ground get closer very fast. His legs were used to the impact, and muscle memory made him transition into a judo forward roll.
He managed to catch up a bit to Dumpster Fire with his little stunt, but his roll was meant to absorb the impact of a rough landing, not convert it into forward momentum, so the fiery boy was still a few steps ahead. None the matter, Darren tried to convince himself, but it was very much the matter. He was forced to admit that firecracker boy was a lot better at this than he was.
A far cry from the gracefully smooth navigation of the obstacles Yoruhi showed off, Darren went over them in a mad scramble. He almost fell a couple times over the suspended bridge, barely catching his balance, relying on strength and grit to push himself through. He still lost precious seconds.
The next obstacle was net-crawling. Finally, though Darren, something I can do. He dove under the net, eating dirt on the way, and thanks to his upper body strength, pushed on the ground, chasing after Yoruhi.
Maybe he wouldn’t overtake him, but the fiery boy certainly wouldn’t leave him in his dust either.

I see you through the flood See you through the fire See you through the storms-a-raging
❧ They were already through the first obstacle when Yoru retorted. “Did you just try to recruit me? Are you that out of options?” He shot back. Admittedly, the offer rubbed his pride the right way, giving his ego a little bit of boost in a way that didn’t kindle embarrassment in him. Who knows, maybe he will actually show up at a practice session just to see the surprised reactions. And maybe to burn off that annoying grin from Darren’s face.
He could keep the steady pace and the distance he started with, even though he couldn’t gain more on Darren. It was obvious the guy had some experience, although not in the same kind of parkour Yoruhi did. He just couldn’t shake the guy off. Against anyone else, he would already be way ahead, but this one was just one persistent leech that stuck to him like a bug to flypaper. It served as an inspiration, and Yoru quite liked it.
Through the bridge and the wire net, they were nearing the end of the course soon, and least the end of the parts they decided to run. A mud-trap was awaiting them, various ropes fastened to a log above it, all for the purpose of grabbing them so they could lounge across Tarzan-style. The mud was a big turn-down, so Yoru wanted to get through this one as fast as possible, and preferably without falling in there. Quickening his pace to gain some momentum, he jumped off the ground, and caught one of the ropes mid-jump, instead of getting on one and jumping away that way. This was faster. He couldn’t waste any time to stop and securely grab a hold of one of the ropes. The drawback was obvious though, when the rough surface scratched at his palms.
Rope-burns sucked. But it was still a burn, and he could care less about that. He got burnt all the time, one more or less scar didn’t matter at all. Landing on the other side, he continued onward, palms held steady instead of curling into fists to ease some of the incoming pain. It was no biggie. He could go on with this.
A huge pithole was dig into the ground as the next obstacle, filled with water. Logs were loosely fastened to either ends of the pithole, obviously there so the runners would have to go through them toward the goal. Their mechanism was unsteady though, and each time someone would step on the logs, they would start to spin, showing the one on top of them down to the wet, watery hell. Just great.
Yoru was driven by instinct as he stepped on a log, but his speed that was so useful up until now, seemed to be his exact demise. His luck was holding for about three steps before the log spun violently, and threw him off its surface. With a low yelp, Yoru angled his body to grab onto the log to possibly stop his fall, but the continued spinning as well as the burn on his palm prevented him from getting a hold.
SPLASH! went the delinquent into the knee-high water down below.
This is what he gets for not thinking this through. Wetness and a probably mocking laugh from the opponent. He hated both.

What a cheeky bastard, though the delinquent with another one of his grins as Yoru answered him. It would be hard to burn any grin off Darren’s face; a new one would grow right back up as he did. “Hey, if you like beating your drum all by yourself better, your choice,” he answered, innuendo very much intended. What was a little shit talking between the boys?
After that comment, though, there wouldn’t be any time left for pleasantries. Crawling under the net allowed him to regain a couple seconds, but he was still well behind Yoruhi. It was annoying, having to chase him for so long; a quick burst of Autokinesis and it would be over. But Darren was competitive, and fiercely so, and so far, Kid Firecracker -- he really couldn’t decide on a nickname -- had managed to outpace him without using his own quirk, so the blonde delinquent would never allow himself to fire his away before his adversary.
And again, he displayed his monkey-like agility, jumping from rope to rope like a god damn bishonen Tarzan. It was infuriating how well Yoruhi could move around without the help of any quirk; ever since his first manifested, Darren had always associated quick movement with quirk usage, believing no human could match him in sheer mobility. And he was being proven oh-so-wrong right now, enough that it began to tug at his ego incessantly, like a kid who kept asking his mom why they couldn't go home on the day she had to bring him to work making her reconsidering her whole career.
He felt a delinquent’s warcry rise from his chest and get past his lips without him having any say in it. “ORRRAAAAAA!” he shouted, like a third-rate direct-to-TV movie delinquent, and the shout gave him a second wind as he dashed for the ropes and leap heroically through the air to catch the first one, as did Yoruhi. For a moment, the delinquent thought he looked pretty slick, daringly leaping through the air, like an albatross or some other kind of bird with a similarly kickass name.
But then came the time to grab the rope, and boy did it burn. Despite his natural toughness, he had to make a conscious effort to keep clenching his fists on the rope and fight against the primal instincts that screamed at him to let go. As with the rest of the course, Darren's crossing of the rope obstacle was less an exercise in grace and precision than it was a show of strength.
Indeed, the delinquent missed the last rope and caught it too low to cross the last hurdle. His instincts kicked in and he pulled himself up impressively fast -- rope climbing was a cheap and extremely efficient way to train upper body strength, which were the two things Darren looked for in a training exercise, so he was used to it. He barely made use of his leg as he climbed the rope like a hungry tiger climbing a tree atop which delicious-looking prey were trying and failing to retreat to. He certainly had the same look in his eyes.
Nonetheless, he had lost a good amount of time, and his chances to press behind Yoruhi all the way to the finish line vanished. Or so he thought. He saw the dumpster fire kid jump on to the next obstacle and fall down into the water.
A chance! Without looking at what it was, Darren ran here with all his might, charging the obstacle like a bull. It proved to be just as fatal a mistake for him as it had been for Yoru, or perhaps even more so. He leaped over bravely and landed on the third log. It immediately rolled, throwing his leg back. He made a split-second demonstration of his incredible balance for a second here as he reflexively slammed his other foot down on the log. It was not the first time the fighter had the ground swept off his feet; he was familiar with the feeling.
What he was not familiar with however was the log. His other foot slipped just as beautifully on the spinning log, sending the blondie head-first into the next log and sinking in the water sadly, like a children's toy dropped in the water, disappearing unceremoniously under the surface of the water.
Bubbles came to the surface for a few seconds, and then Darren’s head emerged, a red bruise clearly imprinted on his forehead, as well as an exaggerated, but very genuine look of defeat on his face. Even when he failed the obstacles, Yoruhi failed them better.
“Fine, fine, I lose,” conceded the delinquent. “We’re not about to run the fucking hundred meter sprint to the finish line, are we?”
Every right the blondie had to laugh at the firecracker kid, he lost them instantly with his earlier stunt, transferring them back to Yoruhi with interest.
