Bzzzrt... Wheeee...
BOOM
Another steel dart launched from the railgun, embedding itself several inches deep into the solid metal target that was already peppered with a couple dozen other darts from previous demonstrations. Most of the crowd around the gun were unused to technology like this, and a couple claps and excited noises rippled through as the dart met its target.
Goro, however, was completely silent, staying away from the crowd and taking notes down on a tablet he’d brought with him. The performance of the railgun was impressive, sure, but it’s humongous power consumption was not. He quickly moved the document he was typing off the screen as he moved onto the next object of his interest; the Tesla gun.
The tesla gun’s test fire received the same reception as the railgun’s from most of the crowd, but one of the younger Quirkers in the crowd seemed unimpressed.
“So what? Dad’s lightning is way stronger than that!” An older woman, presumably his mother, shushed him and shot an apologetic look at the personnel nearby, before dragging the boy by the arm away from the gun. Goro turned away from the crowds, put away his tablet and rested against a wall.
The boy’s words were surprisingly thought-provoking. After all, even with all this new equipment, Quirks are in most ways objectively better than even the most high-tech weapons on show here. They don’t usually require huge power sources like that railgun, for one. All the military money and time in the world spent developing something like that, and it could pale in comparison to the powers of a child.
His thoughts turned to the other purpose of this whole event. Obviously, the military is aiming to recruit Quirkers with this show, and the thought almost sickens him. Quirkless garbage shouldn’t be in the position to order around Quirkers, and they especially shouldn’t be allowed to exploit them like they so obviously would if given the chance. He frowned slightly, his gaze not quite focusing on any part of the environment.

The futuristic weapons, although more akin to a child's toy than anything, were always improvements over the old, tired crap everyone was used to. Their decently accurate simulation of the absolute weapons that a quirker could become was promising, to bridge the gap between quirkless and quirked. Finally, Maxi thought, quirked people would have a chance at stopping the ever growing villain population. It was about time that they worked too.
The railgun was not that impressive by his standarts, though the tesla coil was a tremendous improvement over the smaller things that came several years ago. A wonder of engineering and technology that, only now that people realized they couldn't hope to stand up to those with quirks, finally started developing itself again, to drag its progress out of the bog-filled pits that is stagnation. Anyone with a brain would realize this and, of course, some people that had quirks were as dumb as bricks. Some kid that spoke way more than what he was supposed to, saying not only things he didn't know about, that he didn't understand and how foolish his underlying meaning was. How absolutely disastrous it would be if everyone had his attitude.
This subject really irked Maximillian, from the very moment he stepped into the military camp and pondered upon it. Those deeply scarred arms crossed themselves, while the striking, sharp golden eyes the boy was blessed with closed for a bit, so that he could quietly speak out his thoughts, unaware that Goro was directly next to him and, quite possibly, listening. "The kid speaks of what he does not know. Once the government realizes the military potential of those who are quirked, they'll see those men and women not as humans, but as weapons." Tap. Tap. Tapping his elbow while thinking, shaking his head a bit in disbelief at what the government could do should it be given the chance. The knowledge of what it was missing out on. "At best, quirked people become highly valuable for armies and volunteers are treated with utmost respect. At worst.. slavery. The rage of those with the real power to destroy and unmake would be too much for the world to handle. -- The irony. The only ones who would be able to stop the ones with quirks would be quirkers themselves." Thus, his thoughts concluded in such a somber note, that what the kid was talking about was something he didn't even know about. The kid never realized the ramifications of what he implied. If only he knew..

Goro hadn’t been paying attention to his surroundings, and the sudden presence of the boy next to him made flinch. He quickly realised the boy wasn’t particularly aware of him, either, and Goro settled back down against the wall, reminding himself to stop being so on edge and relax. “I’ve done nothing suspicious during his time here, no one knows who I am, Nick isn’t here and if he was he wouldn’t risk starting a fight in public anyway. Both he and I had been taught better than that, at least.” He ran through his head.
As the boy began talking, Goro was surprised. He’d expected some kind of typical teenage angst, not a reflection of his own thoughts. Initially, he’d just been getting an idea of where the boy was through echolocation, but now his gaze slowly drifted over to the other. “Looks to be about sixteen or fifteen, blue hair. Noticeably muscular, about 10 centimetres shorter than me.” He thought. Despite his best efforts to relax, he couldn’t stop himself from trying to figure out his chances in a fight with him, should it come to that. In a place like this, it was unlikely to go in the bat’s favour.
As he continued to speak, however, Goro began to pick out things he just couldn’t agree on. The basic idea of what he was saying was right, but it felt more and more like his perspective just wasn’t agreeing with Goro. This kid was speaking with so much confidence in his words, and Goro’s brain couldn’t stop his mouth from arguing with him.
“Should they so much as attempt to enslave those with quirks, the repercussions would destroy them. Not that that’s a bad thing; the quirkless have definitely more than earned something like that with their treatment of us already. If that violence would lead to raising the position of Quirkers, it’s for the better.” The moment his mouth closed, he was already yelling at himself mentally. His face remained cold and emotionless as he pushed his glasses up with his middle finger, but inside he was screaming. Why, why, why did he speak up? And why did he make his views so clear?

Ah, someone's beside him. Maximillian looked at Goro who seemed to talk of the quirkless with tremendous hatred, something that, surprisingly, Maximillian didn't immediately retort, get angry at, get offended. He understood that massive contempt towards quirkless people, since he sometimes felt it too. His tremendous presence, a whole area around him that was constantly devoid of all of its heat in favor of a creeping cold. His golden eyes that glowed whenever he used his powers. He was the ultimate anti-thesis to a sneaky person, he was one that was hard to not detect.
Though, Goro also felt familiar to him not only in words, but in face. Good god, he looks like that asshole he had early on in the year, but what was his name? All he remembers was that it was some sort of bug cunt with pathetic powers and even more pathetic skills. "Man, you remind me of this cunt to a chilling degree. ..W.. Uh.. Who was he again..? Rick? Dick? ..Yeah, Dick. --Probably Dick--." Ah god, he just couldn't recall the name, no matter the effort he put into it. He simply didn't care that much for Bug Loser, well, not in the slightest actually. To him, bug loser was but just some dumb cunt who gave up for being a sourpuss. "Bug Loser. Yeah, he was in my U.A. class, idiot quit after like.. the first practical class where he spectacularly failed. Don't miss him at all. Barely even remember his name." In all honesty, this was an attempt to really make sure that the two were in decent terms, at least. Maximillian knew that what he really wanted to say was in direct conflict with this man's own ideas so, to make sure they wouldn't wind up enemies, since for a while now, he suspects that there are undercover villains among the normal people and students. It was for his own safety.
Breathe in deep. Gather your thoughts. Say them out loud and everything will be just fine. "Beggin' to differ. I don't judge you for the contempt towards quirkless. Hell, I feel it too, sometimes. There's only a certain amount of times you can be ambushed by quirkless thugs looking to beat you up before you flip shit." In public, where everyone could hear him. Having a quirk such as his was really a blessing, it was the biggest source of his boundless confidence and borderline cockyness, his nigh superiority complex when it came to quirkless people. "They all ain't bad, though. Some do their best to understand us and interact. Others are just taken by the anti-us flow, to fit in, so that they won't be cast away. There are others who do nothing for they do not care about our presence or lack thereof. They are all people in direct danger of quirkers' wrath. Without us, they cannot hope to win this fight. It comes to us to stop the actions of our own, to teach them that we are not to violently depose those who wrong us and, instead, make them realize that they are but fragile children, looking up to the parent who just wants to protect. They need us." Not the best opinion of the quirkless people themselves, though what could he ever do? They never had quite that high an opinion of him either.

It took Goro a moment to notice the small drop in temperature after Max had shown up; the thin layer of fluff under his suit had insulated him. But his hands were starting to get colder now, and the realisation dawned on him that this was probably an effect of the boy’s quirk. He didn’t mind it though, and didn’t make any kind of attempt to move away from Max.
Ah, so Max is from UA as well, and he knew Nick. Being compared to Nick made Goro’s insides twist. Every part of him desperately wanted to snap that he’s nothing like Nick, not a failure like him, but that would certainly give too much away immediately. He frowned slightly and pushed his glasses up again, but when Max called Nick ‘Bug Loser’ he smirked. “Do you mean Nick Cross? We knew each other. Bug Loser is definitely an appropriate name for him.” He kept his response short, anything else he wanted to say would be sharing information someone from UA has no need to know.
Goro himself hadn’t had many negative experiences with quirkless people, beyond those typical for a mutant. From the moment the Gifted Underground had taken him in, he’d been raised to hate those without Quirks, and so far, he’s had no reason to doubt it. “Whether they’re against us because they actually hate us or just because their peers do, they’re still just as bad. It isn’t our responsibility to protect people who haven’t done anything to deserve it, and if they try and make us do that in warfare then all they’ll do is start another war against Quirkers. And there’s an arms race they cannot win.” He gestured in the direction of the rail-gun with his wing. “Something like that is comparatively useless to even someone as worthless as Nick, with how much energy it requires. From, what little I’ve seen of his Quirk, I mean.”

This was getting way too suspicious, thanks to some slips of Goro's tongue. It wasn't like it was anything bad to know Nick Cross, which was supposedly the dickweed's name, though the similarity just got confirmation. The way he spoke badly of Nick cross and agreed with him so quickly, the way he actually knew of Nick's quirk. Hell, even this man's quirk seemed bug-like. Yeah, a bat, but they look as much like meaty insects as they look like mammals. It was all overwhelmingly suspicious and something he should press further. Though something even bigger seemed to get at both of their minds, which was their argument over superiority of the quirked people over the quirkless. Even then, to compare how useless Human armament was, he used Nick. Right away, he used Nick with tremendous confidence in the guy's abilities then try to save face by saying "from what little I've seen". Maxi was not buying it. "I'm not buyin' that you've seen his quirk just a LITTLE. I won't judge, but are you his family? I could nail you as his dad. Maybe uncle, you don't seem like the shite father who wouldn't spank him into line." He mentioned, really having no hold ups about it. Goro could even be the younger god damn brother and he wouldn't give that much of a shit. From what he heard on rumors, Nick had begun a life of crime and, from what he heard of this man, he didn't particularly like Nick anyway. Surely, he was at the very least neutral, he thought.
On a second note, there was the fact that his views on quirkless people were quite cruel, unforgiving. He didn't agree on helping even the ones who just went with the flow to stay included out of fear. He was an absolutist at heart, he thought, therefore, he wouldn't forgive them. "You show dangerous absolutism, a paranoia that I can really understand. It really shouldn't be a matter of deserving, for no one is a good enough of a person to have the stronger sacrifice themselves for them. Only a perfect being would deserve it and no one can be truly perfect. It's a matter of need. They need us and, the sooner they realize that they do, the sooner they realize that we, at any point in time, could have destroyed them and yet chose not to purely out of our mercy and love for them, they will listen to us. They will do what we desire. THEN, we'll be able to reach a common ground, an understanding. We'll reach peace with each other." Hopefully, that was convincing. He already saw Goro as someone wise, though very stubborn in his views, someone inflexible. A lot of times, he saw value in that. If you couldn't stay firm and strong on your views, how could anyone respect your character, the very views that you defend? Though sometimes, it also showed strength being able to question and oppose your own views to, if not to change, to reaffirm yourself of their validity and strength against opposition.

Ah shit, Max was definitely getting suspicious of him now. Why did Nick have to come up? Goro can never stop himself when Nick is involved, he always finds himself making jabs at him even if the logical part of his brain is yelling it’s a bad idea. And now he’s being compared to… Nick’s dad? Before Max could finish his sentence, Goro relexify gagged. It was only a moment before he stopped himself, but it would’ve been noticeable all the same.
Well, Max was clearly aware of his relation to Nick now anyway. “You… you could say I’m his older brother. But we aren’t related by blood. We didn’t exactly have a father, either. Maybe if we had, he wouldn’t have ended up as such a pathetic failure.” Goro tried to ignore the voice in his head telling him that the same could be said for himself.
Some of Max’s points about the quirkless, he couldn’t quite find an argument against. He couldn’t bring himself to agree with him, but no matter how much he wracked his brain he just couldn’t argue with what Max was saying about absolutism. Goro may have radical views regarding the quirkless, but he isn’t stupid. As a man of science, simply closing his mind to opposing view points would never get him anywhere.
“If they haven’t done anything to actively attack those with Quirks, or if they’re actively helping us already, obviously there’s nothing to gain by actively attacking them. But if they’re against us, they should understand how foolish that is.” He held his tongue past that, unwilling to emphasize just how much force he thought should be involved in bringing that understanding. This is a military expo, after all, and views like that probably wouldn’t be well received by the ones running it. “They do need us, you’re right there, but I don’t know if they’ll realize that the way you think.

Older adopted brother, everything he was not at all fucking expecting. How the hell were they adopted brothers if they looked so damn similar!? As a more, admitedly racist view of his, he had sometimes had a hard time differentiating japanese people from each other when he first came to Japan, though the time he spent here really cleaned that up, only happening occasionally when it was with people of the same family. This, though!? They weren't even blood related and, even then, he was having problems differentiating them! Fuck it, the saving grace to not have Maxi mistake them both was Goro's different hairstyle and VASTLY different attitude. This one was actually polite.
The way he spoke of bug guy was also kinda mean, even if it was mostly true. Chuckling a little, Maximillian just lowered his shoulders while tilting his head a bit. "Dude, there are things that are true, but you still shouldn't really say. I'm sure Dick has at least one good thing to him. I personally respected his initial zealousness." And yes, he just forgot Nick's name again, to really show the hypocrisy in Maximillian's words: while actually saying a good thing about him, he forgot about the man's name again, in a matter of like two minutes.
Something his mind wasn't taking so lightly was their argument and the fact that, in Maxi's eyes, he was actually getting through to Goro, an event he was actually not at all expecting, not really. Goro seemed to actually concede the unecessary severety of punishing people who weren't directly against them or even helping them -- it just motivated Maxi to keep pressing and challenging his absolutist views, since by now, he knew that he didn't have an absolutist mind. A thing that really fell well onto Maxi's view of Goro: he acknowledged the man's intelligence. "Exactly. There's just so much more to gain if we actually befriend and help those who don't attack us and those who help us! Even then, the ones against us will have no power once the voices of reason that come from their own quirkless people speaking highly of us drown theirs. They will lose the battle of the mind and the battle of the majority." Keep pressing, squeeze through openings your opponent shows, go for the strike. By being gentle and bending where he sees that it bends best, he could have Goro concede more, to have him challenge his own views and become more tolerant. That was the plan of attack. Gentle, steady, understanding. An agressive attitude marked with insults and threats would never get anyone anywhere. "And I know well quite a few wouldn't understand the way I think, unless.. it is explained by other quirkless people. It all comes back to what I was saying. By helping the neutral and the friendly, we'll be helping all quirked people, don't you think?" "Don't you think". It was a sentence he learned to use a long time ago to help himself in arguments, since it always attacked the person he was debating against with an assumption that the person would agree with them, since, by using that little line, it'd give the illusion that it was something so universal and obvious that one couldn't really go against it without losing all arguing power.
Obviously it didn't work against people that were paying attention to every one of his techniques and tricks, though so far, he didn't think Goro was aware of such tricks. At least, not right now, where Maxi has him, as he assumes, cornered.

Max calling him Dick again forced a chuckle out of Goro. He hadn’t been expecting it. “Something good about Nick? Absolutely not. Not that I can think of.” It had been long enough that the cut on his right wing had healed up enough to be no longer visible, but thinking about Nick brought the stinging back. He reflexively rubbed the part of his wing that had bore the injury.
The difference in tone between Max talking about Nick and him continuing their argument was starting to become clear. It seemed he was putting far more time and effort into choosing his words, and Goro felt like he was trying to manipulate him. This wasn’t something he appreciated; who does this kid think he is? What has he seen that makes him oh so much smarter?
He had to be more careful with what he was saying, then. Don’t give Max anymore space to push in. “Sure. But what if the majority doesn’t change that easily? It’s been a long time since Quirks first appeared, and society has only recently started accepting us at all. People with quirks, especially mutants, are still treated like garbage, and there isn’t adequate pushback from people who aren’t ‘actively against us’. I’m sure you’ve had your fair share of abuse from the quirkless. Can we really wait and just hope that being nice to them will be enough?”
He’d underestimated Max, that was clear to him. With his appearance, Max looked like someone who was more brawn than brains, but obviously that was not the case. “And yes, some of them will only want to listen if another quirkless person is the one telling them, but that’s why making them listen is important.” He wasn’t going to respond to Max’s last statement; what he’d said prior he felt was enough.

Hm, caught him in the act and now he was starting to slow down on his arguments, being way more careful with what he said since now, apparently, he was aware that Mr. Milkshakes would simply pick up on it and use it against him from now on. His arguments seemed cookie cutter now, appealing more to Maximillian's feelings instead of simple facts about humanity and society as a whole. Instead of keeping in mind concurrent trends visible in history, instead of taking examples from how civilizations dealt with change before, he was now reminding him of all the abuse he got from the quirkless, that the ones who weren't against the quirked were not doing anything. It'd be effective, if he wasn't aware of the risk that falling into that hatred poses to his integrity as someone who wishes to be a hero.
His easy-going semblance visibly dropped, not desiring to tell Goro outright that he had been quite abused by quirkless before, though not caring much about him noticing the millions of words just his face could tell. "It hasn't even been an entire lifetime since quirks first appeared, you cannot expect change to happen this fast. Homosexuals needed over a millenia to even start being accepted and we are complaining about it not happening in what, seventy years? At the rate that change is happening in a country like Japan, I'd call this more a miracle than anythin'." Thank god homosexuality was accepted these days, otherwise, he probably wouldn't be as confident as he is, his partners mostly being guys. Hell, of all the partners he had, only one was a girl and that was his dear Levi. There was just something about guys he couldn't quite point his finger at, though it was also something he didn't care to think about: it didn't need the time of day, homosexuality is expected and accepted. That's the entire point of not having to care about something that is now mundane.
--Back to the matter at hand, Quirkless against Quirked. It quickly got to this subject, when the first thought was being against using quirked people as weapons of war. The kinds of snowballs these arguments tended to take was simply ridiculous sometimes and it just spoke of the unfathomably toxicity that surrounded this subject. Well, if things keep going at this rate, the first batch of professional heroes to come out of the school will be the tipping point to the recognition of the value that Quirked people have. "Exactly. Making them listen is important.. frankly, talking philosophy and quirked's issues all day with you would be quite enlightening and fun, though where would that ever take us? There's things yet to say and action yet to be had. Staying here all day won't help much, will it?" A conclusion. No matter how much they talked and disagreed, no matter how much they argued about it, if they didn't take the issue to the broader audience, if they didn't take action through the best outlet currently available, of course, heroism, nothing would ever be done, nothing would ever change. It all comes down to action.

This argument was getting tiring. This kid may have been smarter than Goro had been expecting, but as far as he was concerned he was still too immature. One can only be so patient waiting for a society that rejects them to change before they start to lose it. Someone so young would obviously not understand that, though. They’d still be more idealistic, even if they thought themselves as more of a realist. They’d still believe that it’d be possible for someone who just put up with that treatment completely peacefully; that one who can’t take it anymore and lashes out is in the wrong.
He noticed Max’s attitude shift slightly, and figured he’d hit on a nerve with the talk of quirkless abusing them. He didn’t feel bad about it, though. The kid had poked at the same emotional wounds on Goro, there’s nothing wrong with Goro doing the same back. “I don’t think we’re expecting too much from society by wanting them to not try and kill us solely because we’re different. Laws and governmental entities dealing with Quirk-related business are obviously going to take a long time to establish and settle into something reasonable, but if the quirkless still can’t handle our existence on a personal level that’s something that won’t change unless we make them change.” He responded, his gaze moving back to the tesla cannon. Or get rid of them, he thought.
He was glad Max was moving to end the argument, but like hell was he letting Max get the last word in. “Arguing about this here serves no purpose, you’re right. Actions speak louder than words ever could, so all discussing this is doing is delaying any actual effect either of us could have on the situation. Considering we’re in agreement on that matter at least, there’s no point in us continuing to talk about it. Goodbye.” He pushed himself away from the wall with his wings, and started towards the cannon, hoping in his mind that Max doesn't try and follow him for some reason. Even if he knew it was unimpressive compared to the potential feats of Quirkers, he figured he might as well take some notes on it before he leaves for the day. He didn’t want the kid’s name and didn’t intend to give him his own, lest either of them runs into the other again.

Glad to know that the guy got the memo that Maximillian wasn't up to talking anymore and, by the looks of it, he was definitely not happy about it. Well, not happy about it ending, more on the side that Maximillian, in his opinion, had entirely trashed Goro in the argument and, even if he was dead-set on his beliefs, the thorn on his side that was he definitely would keep the snarky brit very happy for the rest of the day, that was for sure. It always felt awesome to really annoy someone mean like that -- after all, who would want to be as evil and just violent enough to desire to force the quirkless to bow to their will with violence? Simply unnaceptable.
Maximillian quietly watched as Goro used his wings to get himself off of the wall and simply walked away, without as much as giving his name in the name of courtesy after a calm, civil argument like that. For some reason, deep in his own gut, Maximillian felt like it'd be for the better not to tell him his name either. Instead, he'd let him go and mix with the crowd, hopefully to never be seen again. Heh, might as well; Maximillian didn't see in him the eyes of someone determined or headstrong. Deep in those cold, lifeless eyes he saw someone with even less of a life, that being, socially and emotionally.
In short, Maximillian came out of the argument thinking that Goro was just some extremist no-life loser.
