| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ A lock of dark brown almost black hair fell in front of her golden eyes and Rowan brushed it away with her free hand, so casually, she was looking at her phone. She had only a couple of minutes left before the shop would be closed but she couldn't miss that skirt and a few blouses that she had seen in a magazine and she should have gone her earlier but she had been distracted by other stores, that was obvious as there were two bags hanging on her left elbow, which made a loud sound as it bumped into her own side. She did not care, this happened often when she went shopping. The rich girl was still not used to her settlement in this town and missed home so much and had developed this sort of claustrophobia for her own apartment because it was ten thousand times smaller than her previous mansion. Which was of course exaggerating but she did not find the pleasure yet in being alone and in a small room.
This explained another reason why she was late for her original goal of shopping: she had stood in front of a pet store to look at the little kitten that they sold there and as much as she had wanted to buy it, she was not sure if that was smart, perhaps right now would be the best idea as the weekend was about to start and she could be home taking care of the little thing. It would be a good training for her to be nice. She looked over her shoulder before she stepped into the store, the lights in the back were already out but she had checked seconds ago on her store. There was no one else in, oh no she was wrong, there was someone being loud against the one and only salesman that she saw in this store. She shook her head and made her way towards the stands with skirts and blouses. She got distracted by the pants suits, which were really interesting as she had never worn them, nor her mother, perhaps she was a bit too young for that.
She looked at her reflection and took her hair tie out and let her long black hair drop over her shoulder and move her shoulders from left to right to see herself mostly, she was wearing a black mini skirt and a red button-down shirt. She had changed after school and was now wondering if it shouldn't be smarter to close the two buttons up too but decided that she had been going on like this all afternoon and it was no time to feel bad about her own looks. She got distracted by her own vanity, but still heard the elder woman yell at the salesman and wondered if she should just leave and come back tomorrow. She could save herself the money and get everything she needed for the cat and the cat. She looked at the door. |

The sky was growing dark, dusk creeping up on the horizon. Nick could feel the cooling air even through the layers of ragged clothes he had wrapped around himself.
He crouched on the roof on the clothes shop, face concealed behind a tattered black scarf he had, quite regrettably, pulled from a skip in an alley, along with the extra clothes he wore. To have been reduced to such filthy means of getting by made him sick with self-disgust. He could not wait to discard it again, which he intended to do the moment he was finished with the building beneath him.
Never again would he be given hand-me-down clothes out of pity or be forced to hide himself in rags. He would begin forging his new identity today. He crept towards a skylight built into the roof with all the caution of a man in a minefield. Peering over, he saw a dimly-lit storeroom containing racks of clothes and boxes stacked about. Good enough.
The disc-shaped growth on his back bulged out and spewed thick, black biological liquid. This rapidly consumed his body and solidified into his armour. He pulled a fist back, but hesitated with a frustrated growl. It was not his preferred method. In an ideal world he would be a lot stealthier about this, somehow.
But he was still not quite strong enough for that, nor did he have the time to plan a more stealthy approach. And besides, what difference did it make how unsubtle he was? He was already wanted for what he did to Rin. What was another black mark to his name? That was what he reminded himself.
And so, his fist surged forward and shattered the glass. Piercing alarm bells began clattering immediately, but Nick was already dropping through. Glass shards cut into his body and he cursed from the pain. He bit it back after he landed in the middle of the storeroom and glanced around.
He spied it quickly, thankfully enough: a crisp white two-piece suit in a plastic bag. It looked close enough to the white suit he had worn as part of his ‘hero costume’ at Yuuei. He would get a better look at it later, he figured, when he was far from here.
He seized the suit’s bag and hauled it over his shoulder. He dashed back in the direction of the skylight; he had to get the hell out before people began to react…

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ As she had decided that there was nothing that she actually wanted apart from the article she had seen in the magazine, she wanted to proceed to the cash register, however, that woman was still yelling and that was rude and besides not entirely nice to hear with her ears. So she deiced to walk around a little more and just wait. If it took too long, she would just come back tomorrow and buy the skirt and else it was simply a shame but she would be able to do without. This therapy did not work wonders as she only spends more money and that wasn't the issue. The issue was that she had not enough space in the wardrobe she had in the small apartment and already the huge amounts of clothing pieces.
As she stood at the back of the store now, she heard someone yell something and rolled her eyes before it registered in her mind what the person said. She first was annoyed that everyone one was yelling. But she realized it must be a guard that told his colleague to stop the thief. As she had been struggling with her inward damsel in distress moments, she decided, she could try the running training U.A. had given her as well as trying to stop this person in general. She dropped her shopping bags and passed through the door, which stood ajar, to look at the guard, "I will help." She sprinted off, she did not even think about her own shopping bags and simply started running. Which was definitely not her best thing but actually the training from school made her a bit better at it without the need to catch her breath every five seconds. Perhaps the rescue mission at Semper Fi had helped as well. She missed the tracksuit from gymnastic classes as this mini skirt did not make it any easier and she should not have let her hair loose, but kept it in the bun, of course not, those things never happened. It only reminded her of the diving instruction, luxury was not something they could afford. Thank god was Rowan a trained woman in running on heels.
"Stop!" She yelled, which gave her an awful taste in her mouth, of course, a thief would not stop and she did not want anyone else to get this from her but she was not sure if she would manage. She heard no one behind her, so the guards must really leave it to her or they had come up with another plan, which made more sense. She was too busy with this idea of being a hero, that she had no idea what she should do in case she got her hands on this person. But, there came another plan in her mind, it was an expensive idea but she found the lipstick in the pocket of her jacket and decided to use her quirk to scare off this person. She activated her quirk, felt the Burning Lady roar in her mind as she did so, and threw the lipstick towards the person in front of her, now it's difficult to throw while running but at least Semper Fi had made her aim a bit better. Besides, who wouldn't be distracted by an explosion? |

Nick was halfway to the skylight when he heard what was definitely a boom and felt a burst of heat on his back. It had not hit him, but the utter shock was enough to make him stop in his tracks. Since when were they armed with grenades in a bloody clothing shop? He turned around – and saw the last person he expected.
Rowan.
The sight of her was quite a slap. She was one of the few people during his time at Yuuei who had ever stood out to him. They were alike in a lot of ways; their love of books and their admiration for dragons. And she was pretty…
He forced himself not to think about such things.
“Now why would I do that?” he asked with a scoff.
Would she recognise his voice? He told himself it did not matter. As he spoke he reached out to a nearby pile of boxes and shoved it, sending the boxes tumbling in her direction. He wasted not a millisecond spinning around again and throwing himself on top of another box pile, which he used as leverage to spring off towards the skylight. Thanks to the extra strength granted by his transformation, he was able to reach up and catch the edge of the roof.
He hauled himself up and began to run, but hesitated and glanced back. A part of him actually wished he could talk to Rowan more about books. He even wondered if she had read any of his recommendations. There was a clenching feeling within him he knew to be regret; he had experienced it a lot as of late. Practically drowned in it.
His regret continued to devour him as he darted back over to the fire escape he had used to climb onto the building’s roof in the first place. He rushed down it and reached a long, narrow alleyway.

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ Her idea was to only distract the person, but he was still of course with a headstart. Her mind had already made up that it was a male, taller than she was, even if she wore heels and well, the build of a male. The Burning Lady only laughed in her mind, Rowan herself was rather sad about her lipstick but if this worked out for the best than perhaps it gave her a better idea of herself of joining U.A. She quickly tried to catch up the last part as the person had stopped running and seemed to be in shock, probably not a quirk user or something, she had no idea with the way he looked that it could be someone she knew. When he spoke, she was at first not aware why she got goosebumps, it was actually the Burning Lady that felt a twinge of recognition that had to be thought through before Rowan herself would get the idea of what was going on. However, the U.A. student decided that, that was too farfetched and that she was obsessed simply and only because the lack of interesting conversations and she had been locking more or less for Nick for quite a while, even seeing him in another person, so why would it not be the same now.
She wouldn't be close enough yet but she had stretched her hand towards him, automatically, she did not know why as if she wanted to prove to herself that she was mistaken and that he was not real or not the person that The Burning Lady thought to recognize. She felt the urge to speak but that's when the boxes tumbled towards her and she was well not able to really dodge them with her running and the heels, she let out a small scream as she fell, the step aside made her twist her ankle and she fell on her knees, which were scratched. The normal Rowan would sit down and stare in disgust at herself, her knees, her dirty hands and complain about the pain in her ankle. Unfortunately, Rowan was led by the spirit of the Burning Lady who wanted to know what was going on and believed that the so-called obsession Rowan had, was not true and that the real deal was indeed in front of them.
The Burning Lady filled Rowan with the adrenaline she needed to ignore the pain and push with her hands back on the ground and stand up, calculating that perhaps the person she implied to be Nick, to come back, she ran around the building and tried to see if she could follow the idea of a line, she found an alley where another stair lead back up but there was no need to go up as she thought she saw him disappear further into the alley and she hurried on, the adrenaline no longer enough for the stinging pain that went through her right ankle,"Wait," The Burning Lady spoke, else it would only be some sort of pathetic sobbing, she had to take control over the confused Rowan, "I need to know, if it's you." She had better not say a name, Rowan would, she would have screamed a name, which would be ridiculous if it was him really and only bring him into danger. The Burning Lady wouldn't want that, this was a first time experience in being able to speak like this and the two of them would be utterly confused when they got the time to think about it. "After that, I will go back without saying a word, I promise. I have been looking for you for a while." To feed the ego was perhaps the best way to make sure and to flatter would perhaps get her more answers, to prove protection, she stopped running. |

Something twisted and contorted inside Nick when he heard Rowan’s scream of pain. Guilt. It was a sensation he had come to know like an old friend over the last several weeks or so. However long it had been since that incident.
No time to think about that mess now, he bitterly snapped at himself in his mind. Ignoring the fact that he had thought about little else since it had happened, and would likely continue to think of little else once he was back at Nari’s house. Right then his priority was getting away from his former classmate – the one classmate besides her he had ever felt as though he had formed a connection with.
Damn it all.
He did not get far, though, before he heard her behind him. She was faster than she looked. He expected her to try throwing something at him again. It was what he would have done if he had the power to turn basically anything into a grenade.
Instead, she spoke. He could not put his finger on it, but he felt something about the way she spoke had changed. And she recognised him. He supposed he should not have been too surprised there, since they had shared a class and all. It was the fact she claimed she had been looking for him that gave him pause.
He stopped.
“Truly?” A hollow chuckle. “How sweet of you.”
He knew he should just have kept running, and yet he turned around. Sweet. Was that the right word? He did not know. He wondered why on Earth she would have been looking for him. Concern? Could it have been? He could not possibly have said. Concern was not something he was used to in his life.
He spread his arms in a needlessly theatrical manner, but he could be needlessly theatrical when the mood took him. “Yes, it’s me. Nicholas Cross. Everyone’s favourite classmate – well, not anymore. Yuuei wasn’t for me, you see. It just wasn’t working out, so I left.” He shrugged as though they were talking about nothing more serious than his decision on what pair of shoes to wear. “It’s not really more complicated than that.”
Bullshit, lies, slander. He doubted she would believe him, especially depending on how much she knew. There was a part of him that hoped she did not know anything about what he had done. It would be oddly nice if she could keep on believing he was merely another student, one who had simply chosen a different path in the end.
Then again, she had caught him stealing, so that was arguably already thrown out of the window.
He felt his muscles beginning to throb with an all too familiar ache; his transformation was reaching his limit. If he did not get away soon then he was in for a much harder time.
He turned and began to run again, all the while feeling an increasing ache in his chest that was not due to his limit approaching.

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ The Burning Lady had been able to speak which meant that Rowan had no idea what was going on, but if she was the one leading their body at this point, she would only be distracted by the pain in her ankle, that was throbbing and she would have stared at it to see if it was getting thick or blue already, she needed ice or someone who could cool it down, she shivered mentally considering that hug with Maxi in the elevator would have worked out in this case but she stood here, far away from the person she was following.
The Burning Lady however remained standing and her golden eyes only looking at the person in front of her, too far away still because she had stopped to try and catch up. She crossed her arms in front of her as he spoke to her, yes well you could call it sweet or pathetic, it truly depeneded on how you saw it. Her golden eyes stood cold as she watched him bow and introduce himself again and she realized how different he was from what they had seen in the library, she surely liked this attitude way more than the pathetic display they had but alright let's not go there, there was a scold on her face, probably the pain as well.
She didn't plan to say anything just yet, she had to consider what to do. Normally she would have know enough information and she would have left but actually Rowan shouldn't know this version of Nick but the Burning Lady was surely interested. Before she finally decided to say anything, he ran again, she made a ugh sound before trying to follow again, the adrenaline was gone though and damn that hurt more than she expected.
As The Burning Lady was shortly distracted there was a more desprate; "Nick wait!" which was Rowan, who had no idea how she knew that it was Nick but it was probably something intuitive, not knowing the Burning Lady had just gotten that information, who hated how desperate they did sound and she should take the power of speech quickly back too. She felt so slow on these heels now, she would rather throw them at him. Damn she had made a promise but well, who cared if her promise was broken to someone like him. "That's bullshit and you know it! I just try to understand why." She had to stop running as she would rather just not use that ankle anymore. Either he would run on and they would have to stumble back towards the shop or they could have a few more minutes of a conversation. Heck perhaps she would throw that heel towards him, The Burning Lady liked the idea very much after all. |

Nick poured all the power he could into his legs, but his muscles screamed in agony that grew all the worse the more he tried. He could feel his energy disappearing like water down a plughole. He was getting slower, not faster.
He reached an alleyway blocked off by a wire fence he could jump in his transformed state, but he was inches from it when his armour reverted back to its liquid state and receded back into his body, leaving him to fall against it.
No!
He turned around, head thumping, breaths heavy – and sure enough, there Rowan was.
Damn it all.
“You must really miss me, huh?” he remarked with a brief bitter smirk. “I suppose we must have formed a connection back at the library there.” He chuckled mirthlessly.
He gripped the fence with one hand to keep himself standing. His entire body ached as though he had been running a marathon all day. Even so, he fixed her with an iron gaze. If they truly did have a connection, then his only chance was to try and get through to her by explaining himself.
“I’m going to make things right for our people – the Quirked. I know this might not be the most impressive of starts, but every movement has to start somehow, doesn’t it?”
Would she even care, though? He remembered their conversation in the library and how when he had brought up a Quirker-discriminating author she had not reacted with the outrage he had hoped for. She was probably going to need a lot more convincing than he had time for in that moment.
But perhaps he could make a start.
“For too long we’ve been held back by those weaker than us. We’ll never reach our full potential as the next step in humanity’s evolution if we allow this to continue. I won’t allow it to. I’ll do whatever I can to tear down the world the Quirkless have created and forge a better world; a world where the strongest thrive!” Fire came into his voice the more he spoke, eyes glinting with great eagerness towards his vision despite how he felt in his post-transformation state.
“If you care about a brighter future for yourself at all, you’ll let me go! Or maybe even help me…”

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ He walked away. It was of no use to just go after it. Adrenaline was a thing of seconds, perhaps a couple of minutes and especially if you were distracted; it could take the body a few more minutes until it realized what happened and only give some itchy feelings until you saw the wound, pain object or anything. Well, that didn't work when you fell and more or less fell in a strange way and taking down yourself by flailing with your ankle and thus making it worse by continuing to walk on, on heels. Nevertheless, the Burning Lady did not like to give in and the fact that she had tried to make a conversation and to push Rowan out meant that she was actually trying to get somewhere. She moved a few steps forward, but it was of no use, in the end, she couldn't move her right foot in front of her left as the left was aching so badly. She didn't want to show but she was pouting and scolding, a mix of the both of them at the same time.
She only watched. Nick was at the end of the alley and yet her golden eyes could see. His armor disappeared and she recognized him more or less. She had to lean against some pile of junk that was in the alley, thank god there was a wooden crate next to it where she leaned against, so she wouldn't have to put much pressure onto her left foot. If he walked away now, she had no idea how long it would take her to come back to the shop, too late probably to retrieve her things and worse, she still had to go home.
The Burning Lady had no idea what he wanted to hear from her, mostly because she had never suspected to find this guy and the guy in the library, being one and the same."You were a bit of a twat." She muttered under her breath because that is definitely not what Rowan would say, but yes, no one would recognize the difference. Rowan would rather adore him for the lecture of books in the library while The Burning Lady rather had some physical action, not on heels thank you very much. She wanted to say something when he spoke to her again but it took her so by surprise that she only opened her mouth and closed it again. Daring to take another few steps, hissing softly because of the pain that sored immediately through her. "Our people, do you think they need a defender?" She believed not but she wasn't a hundred percent convinced either, people were most afraid of an explosive quirk, especially if the user did not seem to be all too sure about the whole ordeal herself. But let's not make this a trip about the past, it would explain too much and too less and the Burning Lady did not feel well to dwell about it.
Rowan might have needed protection for that, her own insecurity was enough, but she had known, oh she had seen, it started with their father and Rowan had no idea why he showed up less and less, no The Burning Lady had protected her, now they just had to take steps in the right direction. She couldn't take more steps literally now but he was there, he looked tired and perhaps he looked a tiny bit lost. She liked the fire, the spark that was in his voice, in his eyes, it quickly came as he spoke again and she wanted to hear more. That's how she managed to drag herself closer, "I already promised I would let you go." She whispered, "I am not sure if I can help you, even if I want to." There was no time to tell secrets, she did not trust him but she was interested as long as she could keep the control in this conversation over herself or Rowan and ignore most of the pain, she had to stand utterly still or hang onto the fence (which she didn't want to) to not hurt herself. |

Nick leaned against the wall to keep himself steady. He caught her remark about him being a ‘twat’, though it was mumbled. He was more hurt than he would ever admit, to a degree that surprised even himself.
Stop it; she’s clearly messing with you. Since when were you so sensitive? Why care at all?
He had just really felt something between them back at the library. She had seemed like him. He was certain she had felt it too. He did not want to believe she could just have been humouring him all along.
“The Nile’s more than a river in Egypt,” he grumbled, sounding more defensive than he intended to.
He allowed her to move closer to him, though he watched her every movement with extreme caution. She had said she would let him go, but Nick knew well you could never trust anyone.
He slowly shook his head. “Not a defender, no. Just someone to inspire them to realise the strength they possess and to rise up. Those that can, anyway. The weak among them deserve to fall by the wayside, which they naturally would. That is the world I envision: a world dominated by the strong.”
He listened to her claim she did not think she could help him and could not stop the sigh from leaving his lips. “A pity.” But not all that surprising. Still, he could not help feeling disappointed. “You could be so much more, you know. Are you really happy being kept in a cage by our Quirkless government? They’ll never let you spread your wings the way you deserve to. And you in particular deserve a lot better. Your Quirk is a formidable one.”
The fact he had been able to keep talking for so long in his weakened, post-transformation state was worthy of a gold medal, of that he was certain. His vision was wavering, however.
All this over a bloody fashion choice. He still held onto the suit with one hand. It was a wonder he had not dropped it in all the chaos.
“If that’s all, may I take my leave now?” he asked. “I have places to be, you know, things to plan.” Did he really? He supposed he had been motivated by his need to start doing things towards his ultimate goal of becoming the one to inspire the Quirked to rise up, but he had no real idea how he was going to begin. Not yet.
He did at least have a name in mind: Abaddon. The destroyer. A fitting name for the one who would tear down the current society. It was already his online handle within certain underground circles. Slowly but surely he would make the name known.

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ She had noticed as well that her whispering qualities weren't so great, it was of course that she never had to whisper as she had never been able to speak out loud but suddenly everything changed and here The Burning Lady stood. She actually hated how she had no name, she was Rowan too but better if you asked her, herself. She tilted her head a little to the left and brushed her hair out of her face, she could use a hair tie and now she knew why Rowan had that always with her but she did not want to be distracted and search for it. Because in that case and if she would have been Nick, she would have taken that moment to run away. "I did not mean that, I-I rather not admit that I liked the conversation a lot. I finished the book you recommended and well. I have been wanting to talk to you about it but... clearly you were gone." That's what Rowan would have said and The Burning Lady made use of that. She did agree with Rowan though, she would have showed a tougher outing if she had known what the conversation had revealed but she was too naive, the Burning Lady simply made use of the two of them combined now, as she had that ability for today and she wanted enjoy it for now. How long would it take again before that or was it only because Rowan couldn't form an opinion about what she had learned now about Nick and had pulled back in her shell of selfprotection?
She looked at the ground, trying for herself to figure out how to approach this further on while Rowan would look sad for saying such thing. Remorseful was what she was going after. She walked closer with her head down, trying to see through her eyelashes if he moved, else she would stop, this was the most fun she had had in years. Her ankle did hurt though, that was a bit of a shame. But she asked what he meant, it was a very interesting thing and she believed, she had to tell him. She first had to answer his question that she thought she could not help. The real thing was that she could not help because she had no body of her own and she had no idea when she would get the power in her hands again to move Rowan even against her will or even if she had that power, this was after all compared to that but an innocent conversation.
She stared at him, without being able to speak for a few seconds. Exactly! They deserved more than that but only Rowan was afraid and look where that got them, at a damn hero school. "No wait, I mean, of course you are allowed to leave, I am not stopping you but.." How to form the right words. "I mean, I agree, why should we be hold against our will, it is not as if we had a choice, we made a quirk and I will not have them hold that against me, that I am special and they are not." She took a deep breath and tried again to look remorseful, "I mean, the cage they gave me.. it is, quite harsh that they don't want to shake your hand simply because they are afraid it would hurt them because my quirk works like that. I am not so brave, that's why I don't think I can be of use." As it was never smart to tell someone you have multiple people disorder, no one would understand unless they got it themselves. The same with quirks and non-quirkers. |

Nick tilted his head a bit as she became apologetic over the ‘twat’ comment. While she certainly damned well should have been apologetic, a part of him could not help feeling her demeanour had changed too fast. As a professional liar himself, he knew some of the signs of such things. Still, he found himself wanting to believe she was being honest about being sorry, for reasons he did not really understand at all, and that muddled his judgement of whether she was being truly honest or not.
He smiled a genuine smile, however, when she agreed with his words, a smile that was pleased but cold.
The smile quickly faded when she went on to say she doubted she could be of any use to him. He gave a small scoff. “You’ll never be of any use to anyone if that’s your attitude.” He smirked. “Believe in yourself a bit more. If it helps at all, I know I certainly believe you’re capable. You just need to let loose. It’s the only way to break free.”
He remained smirking, though inside his mind he questioned the things he had just said. Not that he doubted them; he just was unsure about his wording. ‘Believe in yourself’? What was he, the protagonist of a shonen manga?
I really need to work on my words if I want to pull off this plan…
The all-too-familiar sound of a police siren pierced the night air. Nick glanced past Rowan down the alleyway and grimaced; fortunately the police were not upon them, but they did not sound too far away either. He looked back at Rowan.
“So what’ll it be, dragon queen?” he asked. “Can I go now or not?”

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ The Burning Lady had tried her very best to be polite, it would get her somewhere she thought, perhaps that was something that made it easier in this world for Rowan than for her. The thing is, how strange should it be to be nice to a person that just stole something. Obviously not being nice to a store owner.
She tried to blush, letting the body react as to how it would if she was Rowan, the smirk, the things he said, it would all make her blush in that way. Rowan needed an attitude and she better get it damn fast! "I will definitely keep that in mind, it would be better if I believed in myself a little more." But the burning Lady knew why Rowan did not, no one else had to know after all Rowan herself had simply tried to forget it and stick it in the back of her mind, to never think about it ever again. "I will try to get better, with school and everything, I-I will learn." To control, to be better, to be able to make better burns.
The idea that he called her a queen, more or less, made the Burning Lady rather satisfied, perhaps it had gone well enough now. "Sorry, of course. I didn't mean to..." She looked over her shoulder, "Make things worse." She decided to say. She would watch him go, no matter which way and tried to take a few steps but her ankle hurt too much and she felt weak, that was the adrenaline of the conversation, the ideas were forming a way in her mind that made it less well addictive and bad and she noticed someone was coming her way, multiple guys, the burning Lady recognized the outfits, the police, there was one thing to do, to buy someone time and a second thing to do to let Rowan be in charge and forget:
She fainted. |
