I often feel like a butterfly with broken wings It was around six in the morning when Ryuusei Igarashi arrived at the Dagobah Beach. He had been up since four am practicing his Kuroneko style and, after taking a shower, headed to the beach where he usually meditates. However, today he wasn't putting his feet on the sand: he was putting his body inside the cold water.
In the sixteen years he had lived around the area, he went to that exact beach countless times. Despite that, he probably never stepped a single foot inside the water. It was a fear he always had and was never really sure why - he jsut didn't like being inside water. When thinking about it, Ryuu always assumed that it was because of the lack of control: being swept by waves, not having your feet on solid ground, not knowing exactly what's under you, the unknown... Humans were made to walk, not swim, so why bother with going to the ocean?
But he was trying to change. A good way to improve one's breathing is to do drills underwater and, because of that, if Ryuu was serious about improving his Quirk, then this was something he really needed to do. He was so determined that he even asked for help - who would've thought.
He asked Sean - a classmate from Yuuei - to help him with the situation. They had never talked much, but from Ryuusei seen from the kid he seemed like a pretty chill and nice guy, almost too nice. He also had a water related Quirk, so he would be perfect to help Ryuu overcome his fear. After talking to him, he had agreed to meet him there, even at such an early hour.
I hope he comes, Ryuu thought as he sat on a bench near the beach, wearing flip-flop, navy blue swimshorts and a white t-shirt.
If it went all, Ryuu would at least finish the day with less fear of water. And also with a new friendship.

Crap, crap, crap! Sean looked at the time and saw that he had accidentally set his alarm to the wrong time. Now he only had half an hour to get ready and head to the beach, rather than the hour and a half that he originally planned for. Normally, he would not feel the need to rush, but today was different. One of his classmates had asked Sean a favor. Ryuusei wanted his help in overcoming his fear of water. Being the nice and helpful person that he was, Sean was more than happy to help out his fellow classmate. Besides, the two had not really talked much, so if there was any chance that Sean could make a new friend, he would gladly take it. Even if that wasn't the case, Sean could never say no to anyone in need of help.
Sean hurried up and got dressed, ate a quick bowl of cereal, grabbed his bag and some other necessary things, and ran out the door after locking it behind him. He did not want to keep Ryuusei waiting. Sean would never forgive himself if Ryuusei left because Sean was late. Unfortunately, the bus was not there, so Sean would have to run to the beach on foot. On the bright side, he didn't live too far from the beach, so if he was late, it would not be by much.
Running as fast as he could, Sean eventually made his way to the beach. Out of breath, Sean checked his watch. To his immense relief, he just barely arrived on time. Taking a moment to catch his breath and drink from his water bottle, Sean scanned the area and noticed Ryuusei waiting. Making his way to Ryuusei, Sean greeted him the same way he greets everyone: The usual smile and wave of his hand. "Good morning, Ryuusei!"
It was time to get this started!

I often feel like a butterfly with broken wings His small backback - gray in colour - was sitting on the floor inbetween his legs as he waited for Sean's arrival. While alone, he opened it in order to remove his portable console: if Ryuu was to wait, might aswell take the chance to play a videogame. It was also not like Sean was late to their meeting, it was Ryuu who was slightly early - as always.
It was a recent game, the one that Ryuusei was playing. It was made by one of the most famous game developers in Japan and was, to the date, one of the only one's to take advantage of the current world situation and society. In the game, the user can choose to play as a hero or villain and progress until becoming the number one hero or the new ruler of Japan. Ryuusei always played as the hero in these type of games... this time, he had choosen the villain. He was in the middle of a sidequest when he heard a voice from behind him.
"Good morning, Ryuusei!"
Turning around, he could see the boy approaching, waving and smiling. It really did seem like the boy was always happy. Ryuusei still couldn't decide if he liked that or not. So, with his usual rather cold tone, he replied. He gave a little awkward smile too, knowing that usually people get the wrong vibe from his deattached voice.
Hey Sean - he said while turning off the device he was holding, putting it once again inside the backpack and placing the latter on his shoulders after closing it - Sorry if this is too early, I just didn't want to do this while the beach was full of people.
One of the other reasons Ryuu didn't like the beach that much - besides the fact of it having water, obviously - was the amount of people. That was why, when meditating there, he would only go either super early or super late. Trying to go inside the sea while many others were at the sand, looking and judging him, wasdefinetely a no-go.
Now standing up and a little closer to Sean, Ryuu scratched his hair and let out a small laugh as he talked.
I bet you don't hear abouta teen who doesn't like water nor does know how to swim that often huh?, he commented, trying to make fun of the situation.
He was a little embarassed by it, specially since Sean had a Quirk related to water, so making a little joke about the scenario was perfect to hide the previous feeling.
Besides, small talk was a good way to delay going to the sea.

It looked like Ryuusei was playing with his portable console while he waited for Sean to arrive. Sean was curious as to what games Ryuusei liked to play. That could wait for another time, though. Unlike most of the time Sean goes to the beach, he wasn't here to just relax and have fun. He had work to do!
"Hey man, it's fine! I don't mind getting up early. Helping other people out is what we heroes are supposed to do, after all!" Ryuusei then admitted that he wasn't a fan of water. Being someone who loved water and had a water-based quirk, Sean was a bit saddened to hear this. Still, that was his opinion, and Sean could respect that. "It's not really uncommon for me to hear that, but don't worry about it. Just as there's different kinds of fish in the sea, there's different kinds of people who all like and dislike different things. Nothing wrong with that!"
Sean, being the oblivious person that he was, failed to pick up on the fact that Ryuusei wanted to chat to stall for time so he wouldn't have to get in the water so soon. Because of this, Sean decided to just dive in now. "Let's get started then, Ryuusei! We don't have to go too deep in the water if you're not ready yet. We can start small by just having you put your feet in. Then just go as far as you're comfortable with. And don't worry if you go in too deep. I'm a fast swimmer, so I won't let you drown!"
Seeing the waves come in, Sean was excited to surf after he was done helping out Ryuusei. Perhaps he could teach Ryuusei how to surf if the boy was interested. Sean could show him how fun it is to ride the waves, and it would be a good way for Ryuusei to overcome his fear of water. Knocking down two birds with one stone!
"Well I'm ready whenever you are. Go on, you can do it!"

Dreams breathe life into men. The stars... I'll reach them.
Sean Mizushima really did seem like a friendly person. Talking to him for only these brief moments, Ryuu could be certain of that fact. The tanned boy was telling Ryuusei that getting up so early wasn't nothing if it meant helping others and that he shouldn't feel ashamed to be afraid of water.
All the other students from Yuuei... They all had this urge inside of them that propelled them into helping others, into taking time of their own just make the ones around them feel better. In some regards, Ryuusei also had that instinct, but in others... In others he couldn't relate to it at all. Why? Why was that so?
Am I a bad person? he often questioned himself.
No, that's couldn't be it... could it? He had people who he wanted to protect, others who he wanted to save and even others that he wanted to love... So why, no, what was that hole that he was feeling inside of him? That deep and black hole that was consuming him as weks passed by.
Such thoughts were immediately cut off by Sean's cheerful voice.
"Let's get started then, Ryuusei! (...)"
The boy continued to talk as he stepped inside the other all excited. Ryuu, on the other hand, carefully and slowly walked a little in the sand, maintaining a safe distance to the sea.
I'm coming... he said in a tone that was a clear contrast to Sean's.
Looking at the incoming waves and how Sean looked like a fish in them, Ryuu felt totally out of place. How the hell was he supposed to do that?!
Okay Ryuu, you can do it. You fought Jas, you told Rin you liked her, you went to Kabukicho and did... that Yeah yeah, those are all scarier than water...
Trying to hype himself up, he took some more steps forward. The water was now at the level of his ankles. He stopped, looking at Sean while yelling in order for the other boy to hear him.
I think this is a good place, Sean!
Well... it was something, at least.

Sean was pleased to see that despite his dislike for water, Ryuusei was actually trying his best to overcome that fear. It wasn't much, as he didn't really go too far in. The water was only ankle deep. Still, progress was progress, no matter how small. Baby steps! Sean was determined to help Ryuusei overcome this fear as soon as possible. Fear was nothing more than a restraint. An entire world of possibilities open up once one overcame that fear and was no longer shackled by it. If Ryuusei had trouble with his shackles, Sean would be happy to try to help get them off.
"Yeah, awesome job! It's not much, but it's a start!" Words of encouragement helped a bit. Now that Ryuusei was in the water, it was time to make him go deeper and be more comfortable with the water. However, Sean needed to be careful not to rush Ryuusei, lest he becomes overwhelmed and gets out of the water, undoing their progress. "Okay, I want to to just slowly go in deeper in the water. Just go in as far as you're willing to go for now. And no rush, either. Take your time!"
Sean decided to go in the water with Ryuusei. Not only was he there for support, but on the off chance that Ryuusei rushed in and got too deep, Sean would be there in a flash to stop him from drowning. Of course, drowning was very unlikely to begin with, seeing as it was doubtful that Ryuusei's aversion to water would go away that quickly.
"So how does the water feel to you? Not as bad as you thought, right?"

Dreams breathe life into men. The stars... I'll reach them.
Deeper?! he yelled back in a rather comedic tone before shutting himself off completely, realizing that the usual cold tone of his voice had disappeared for a brief moment. This thing of facing your fears really did show one's true colors, didn't it?
He was taking deep breaths. One part of his brain was struggling to understand why the hell was he so scared of going deeper into the water; another one was face palming by how ridiculous the situation would look like to an outsider... Hell, even to Sean it should look a little weird, even if he appeared to be the most friendly soul in the entire world.
He woke up super early, I have to do this... he thought.
Yeah, he couldn't fail him, right? Yeah, yeah, that was a good enough excuse to force his body to move forward. And so, with little and slow steps, he began walking forward. He had his eyes closed. For some reason, that helped. Each step was taken with caution, as if all of the sudden all the sand could crumble and his life would end. And then, when he opened his eyes...
What the......
Without realizing, he had water to the level of his waist. And, now knowing this, the panic started to settle in. Breathing was even more uncontrollable and, in order to not look down, he looked forward... Wrong idea - on that direction all he could see was water until the end of the horizon.
He looked sideaways. Sean was near him, probably making sure that Ryuu was fine.
So, Sean, speak honestely... - he was looking at the kid with a serious face and, at the same time, the face of someone who had seen a ghost - What are the odds of a shark appearing right now and biting my legs off?
For a smart kid, water really made Ryuusei real dumb. But maybe that was the way that his brain had of looking for help on that situation. If they could talk there for a bit, maybe Ryuu would forget where he was...
Hell, with luck, being in water could become more natural by the end of the day.

Despite Sean being notorious for his obliviousness, even someone as dense as him could tell that Ryuusei was feeling very uncomfortable in the water. His face and tone of voice had said it all. Sean began comforting and encouraging Ryuusei. "It's okay, man. I'm right here. Everything is gonna be fine. You can do it! Conquer both the ocean and your fear!" Despite his fear, Ryuusei had slowly began to make his way deeper into the water until he was waist deep. Sean smiled. He knew Ryuusei could do it. "Awesome job, man!" A few words of encouragement couldn't hurt. It was all about making progress.
However, panic began to wash over Ryuusei like the waves on the beach. He asked Sean if he had to watch out for shark attacks. Sean put his hand on Ryuusei's shoulders and smiled reassuringly. "Listen. Of all the students at UA, I doubt that anyone goes to the beach more often than I so. So believe me when I say that I know the place pretty well. Better than the back of my own hand, in fact. Sharks don't come to this area of the beach. If there are any, I have never seen them here before. And even if they were to show up right now..."
Sean activated his quirk. That familiar cool sensation began spreading throughout his body. Concentrating, Sean created a hand from the ocean water. The hand then made a thumbs up sign. "...I can just drive them all away with my quirk. Nothing here is gonna harm you, I promise!" Sean then tried to make a lighthearted joke to lighten the mood. "Well, except maybe the Sun, but that's only if you forgot to bring your sunblock!"
Ryuusei was in a safe place. There was nothing for him to worry about. Sean would help make sure of that.

Dreams breathe life into men. The stars... I'll reach them.
Feeling Sean's hands on his shoulders and hearing his reply, Ryuu was able to relax a bit more. His question about the sharks and been half jokingly, trying to cope with with being so deep inside the water for the first time in his life but, at the same time, there was also a little genuine concern in the question... so it was definetely good to be told that there was a 0% chance of a giant shark appearing out of nowhere.
Okay... Okay, yeah. That's good then, he replied.
Looking back, he could see the water begin moving in a weird way. If it was for Sean's cue and the fact that Ryuu knew that his classmte's Quirk had something to do with controlling water, the brown haired boy would've definetely freaked out. Instead, he watched the form that the big amount of water began forming. A thumbs-up. That was a cool thing to be able to do. It was like a trick the all the magicians in the games that Ryuu played would be able to do. Yeah, Sean reminded Ryuu of a water magician: friendly and with a cool power. It was high praised coming from the cold kid, a praise that he didn't feel confortable sharing with Sean, due to have basically just started to talk to him today.
Yeah, I think I forgot the sunscreen... - he laughed as he scratched his head, getting more relaxed without even knowing... almost like he was in land.
It was due to his more relaxed behaviou that Ryuu pushed for the conversation to continue.
So, where are you from Sean? - he asked - Your japanese is pretty good, so I'm assuming that your father or mother are from here. Is that right?
It was basic curiosity, nothing more than that. Sean had showed great kindness by helping Ryuusei without really knowing him, so Ryuusei wanted to know a little bit more about his classmate.
A little small talk surely wouldn't hurt.

Ryuusei might have laughed at having forgotten to put on sunscreen, but for Sean, it was no laughing matter. He once got badly sunburned when he was 10. He could still remember his mom scolding him for not putting on his sunscreen.Sean had never forgotten to put his sunscreen on ever since. "Hey, maybe we should get you some sunscreen after this. Trust me, not having any sucks big time." Sean had some spare sunscreen in his bag back at the beach, and he didn't mind sharing his with Ryuusei. No one deserved to get sunburned.
Ryuusei then asked about where Sean was from. Understandable, since the blue haired boy spoke Japanese well, but didn't really look Japanese at all. "I was born in Hawaii. Lived there for six years before coming to Japan with my mom. She's Japanese, and I'm Japanese-American." Sean's usually radiant smile faltered tremendously with his next words. "You can guess who I got my American side from."
In truth, Sean always felt uncomfortable every time someone asked him this question. It always made him think back about that horrible man. His father, Walter Fisher. That man actually hurt his mom, right in front of Sean. That horrible experience was the primary reason why Sean wanted to become a hero in the first place. He wanted to be able to get stronger and be able to protect his mom, as well as other people, from villains and horrible people like Walter.
It was obvious to anyone that Sean was upset just thinking about that man. Suddenly, Sean noticed how gloomy he looked, and his warm smile quickly returned. "Heh, sorry about that! I just don't really like talking about my dad much. Anyway..." Sean took a moment to think about how to change the subject. "I'm bilingual. I speak both Japanese and English, but my English isn't as fluent." Sean was hoping that Ryuusei wouldn't steer the conversation back to his dad. He didn't mind talking about what happened, but it was sad to think about, and Sean definitely preferred staying cheerful.

Dreams breathe life into men. The stars... I'll reach them.
Before asking him about his origins, Ryuu agreed to Sean's offer to lend him sunscreen. He seemed to take the matter ver yseriously - and he should. The sun was dangerous and Ryuu should've thought about it. The truth was that he hadn't took his shirt off in the beach for lord knows how many years, so he really did simply forget.
As soon has Sean responded, Ryuu felt bad. The hawaian kid was a really happy and outgoing perfect, so it was perfectly obvious to see that Ryuu had touched on a sensitive point for the tanned teen, one that gave him a sad look, a clear contrast to his regular expression.
His relationship with his father doesn't appear to be great, Ryuu thought by seeing how Sean reacted when mentioning the man in an indirect way.
He even apoligized for being down and not his usual self. So that was it, the reason for him to be always happy: perhaps he just didn't want to deal with the sad part of him. Ryuusei understood that, in part. It made him respect Sean even more. It also made the young Igarashi realizze something: from every student and teacher he interacted with or seen, Sean Mizushima was the only one that came the closest to what Ryuu though should be a real hero. Yeah, the kid would make for an excellent hero - one that helps without expecting nothing in return, one that is happy and smiles to give confort to others. That was already clear. Once he faced the problems wih his dad, not even the sky would be a limit for the kid with double nationality.
Kind of ignoring - in purpose - Sean change of topic, Ryuusei also didn't bring up the boy's father. That was a matter that only Sean could deal with. But Ryuu couldn't also ignore it completly. So, placing his righ hand on Sean's shoulder and making a thmbs-up with his left one, Ryuusei smiled.
You'll become a great hero Sean, I'm sure of it.
He didn't know fully why, but it was something that Ryuusei felt he should say, even if it was out of character.
He also didn't realize that the water level had gone higher, making the water touch his upper chest area. Sean really was helping a lot.

words: 566. tag: Ryuusei Igarashi notes: A bit of insight as to why Sean's the way he is |
Sean was still deep within thought. He couldn't believe that he had let himself get visibly upset in front of Ryuusei. It didn't sound like much of a big deal, but for Sean, it was the biggest deal in the world.
After leaving Walter Fisher, Sean's mother took him back to Japan to escape from her now ex-husband. That was the saddest part of Sean's life at that point. To see his once beloved father turn into a monster like that. To show such hatred towards the woman he once loved, and the son who was proud of him. To suddenly have to leave behind his school, his friends, his old home, all to escape the man he now despised. All of this was too much for poor Sean to bear.
However, that was still nothing. Nothing compared to what his poor mother went through. She was only visiting Hawaii. But then she met the man who thought was perfect. He seemed like a dream come true! She could settle down with him and have a happy life! But it was all a lie. His love for her was a lie. He simply used her like all the other women he slept around with. Sean could not forgive his father for that. His mom had cried countless nights, her heart having been crushed and shattered into billions of pieces. She could never forget about him, even if she wanted to. Sean had his eyes and hair color. Even his name was picked out by him.
Young Sean had no idea how to help her feel happy again. Try as she might to smile at her beloved little boy, she just could not hide her misery. Not in front of him. Sean hugged his crying mom, crying alongside her. He then tried to smile. He wanted his mom to be happy. Even though they were betrayed by Walter, they at least had each other. They could find happiness without that man. They could rebuild their lives, together. Sean's mother was touched by the blue haired boy's attempt to cheer her up. She smiled too. From then on, the two would always try their best to smile for each other, always doing their best to keep each other and everyone else around them happy. No more sadness and gloom for the Mizushimas. Only happy thoughts from now on.
Sean was suddenly snapped back into the present. Ryuusei had placed one hand on Sean's shoulder, and made a thumbs up sign with the other. Smiling, he then told Sean that the blue haired boy would one day become a great hero. It was kinda cheesy and a bit out of character for Ryuusei, but Sean greatly appreciated the sentiment. "Thank you, Ryuusei. I know that you'll be a wonderful hero too. Even better than me, in fact!"
Sean then noticed that he and Ryuusei were deep in the water now. The water level was at their upper chest. "See? You got this far in. Once you conquer the water, that's one less thing holding you back. And once you overcome all of your obstacles, then you'll be unstoppable! All the villains better watch out, cause you'll be their to kick their asses!" Sean smiled, back to his cheerful and happy mood. It was funny. He had come here to help out Ryuusei, but Ryuusei had helped him as well.

Dreams breathe life into men. The stars... I'll reach them.
Me? - he laughed off Sean's reply - No, no, no way. I'm lucky if I'm able to graduate from Yuuei.
Yeah, there was no way that Ryuusei could become a good Hero. At least not a Hero like everyone thinks one should be. He had already accepted that fact and was fine with. Letting everyone else shine while he worked on their shadow... if he really was to be a Hero, that was the way that he would work.
Sean's next words caught him by surprise though. Looking down, he noticed where the water was touching his skin. He had never been so deep inside of water in his life. It felt weird, somewhat scary even, but, at the same time, it also felt normal. Like he was just talking with Sean on land. It was a good feeling, conquering your own dumb fears.
Sean kept on encouraging Ryuusei. The boy really was a force of nature when it came to make others feel better. This time, Ryuu went along with it, despite maintaining his shy and cold voice.
Yeah, I throw them into the water and then you arrest them. Sounds like a good plan to me, don't you think?
As they both walked back onto the sand - in part because Ryuu's skin was already burning and he really needed the sunscreen - Ryuusei felt good about himself.
Slowly, he was starting to make friends. He was still hanging on to the part of himself that he liked.
