Today was an important day for Nick. Important not because of an exam, or some request of his dear mother’s, but it felt every bit as important as those things to him. He approached his favourite hangout off-campus, the bookshop, with nerves that tingled from excitement. It was a level of giddiness he had not felt for the longest time. He could not remember the last time he had looked forward to something so much.
No. Today was important because today was the day Harry R. Krowe was signing copies of his bestselling novel Bywefogoh's Absurd Journey. Nick carried his own copy of the thick doorstopper under one arm.
The bookshop was the only one of its kind for miles, possibly even the only one left in the entire country. It was thus not surprising to Nick that the line for the book signings extended out of the door. Still, impatience ate away as him as he stood there and shuffled his feet. He had so many questions to ask the author. He was having a hard time picking out exactly which question to ask first. Was Dyjls really dead? Where did the Sword of Uhnal’kihn come from? And most crucial of all, when the hell was the sequel going to be out?
The line finally moved again and he entered the shop. He took a deep breath, trying his best to calm himself. Not much longer now…

Alaster was feeling overjoyed. A few days ago, he had received an email from his publisher. His latest book Bywefogoh's Absurd Journey sold extremely well, far better than what he had expected. He was used to getting okay or good reviews for his books, but not fantastic like this. All of those long and sleepless nights had finally payed off! What's more, he had been invited to do a book signing at the nearest bookstore. Alaster loved seeing the smiles on the faces of those who had read and enjoyed his books. It's the main reason why he enjoyed writing so much. Of course, he had agreed to come in for the book signing.
Alaster had arrived at the bookstore early. He was dressed in a simple black suit with a striped red and black tie. His hair was combed back, and his usually closed and squinted eyes were wide open, exposing his gray eyes. While he was out in public as Harry R. Krowe, he liked his appearance to be as different from his villain persona Crowley as possible. He may not be out in public as often while doing villainous things, but he didn't want to be recognized by the few people who have seen him. Better to play it safe, after all.
Alaster was surprised and pleased when he saw the people waiting in line to get their books signed. There were so many people, the line actually extended out of the store itself. Smiling, he greeted everyone and bowed slightly when he was met with a round of applause. "Good morning, everyone! I'm so happy to see you all here. Let's get this started then, shall we?" Alaster sat down in a chair the store owner had set aside for him. With his signature feather pen in hand, he was ready to sign book after book.
As he signed the first person's book, he wondered if one day, he'd be able to write well enough to make a fortune. Perhaps one day he'd be able to make enough money to be able to consider retiring from villainy and devote himself completely to writing.

The further Nick got down the line, the more he felt as though he were going to explode. Not even the earthy smell of real paper books could calm his nerves the way it usually did when he visited this book shop. A random onlooker might have assumed he had ants crawling around in his underwear from the way he was shuffling on the spot.
Finally, Nick reached him: Harry R. Krowe, in the flesh. Nick had seen what he looked like from the photograph in his book, but meeting him in person was quite something else.
He opened his mouth to speak but what came out was an embarrassing jumble of words. He felt his cheeks flush in a way that was just plain uncharacteristic of him and glowered at himself for it. He tried his best to regain his composure and look Krowe in the eyes; “Sorry, I just – I have so many questions!” He did not know where to begin with them all. “I haven’t enjoyed a book so much in a long time. I have to know; was Princess Uamil really a ghost? Did Jiak kill Gjaum’s father? Or is Jiak actually Gjuam’s father?” Shit, he could not remember half the questions he had come in wanting to ask. He felt like a fool and knew he must have looked like one. Ugh, how humiliating.

So many books to sign. Alaster's hand was starting to get a bit sore. However, all of the smiles from his readers more than made up for that. Alaster felt great joy in writing and felt even greater joy seeing others like his writing so much. As long as he could continue to keep his readers amazed and smiling, he would be fine with getting his hand sore.
Alaster was moved by the various reactions of people getting their books signed. One man kept bowing and thanking him as though he saved his life. A pregnant woman asked him if he would consider writing children's books so that she could read it to her child. A young girl squealed with excitement when he agreed to sign her arm in addition to her book, but he was creeped out a bit when she said that she would never wash that arm again. That was a bit too much for him.
The next person in line was a young man, a teen from the looks of it. Alaster smiled at the sheer enthusiasm this man showed. He clearly was a big fan. Regaining his composure, the teen apologized for his fanboying and said he had a lot of questions to ask. "It's quite alright. There's no need to worry about it. And of course I'll be more than happy to answer them all. I owe you that much for enjoying my book so much. Thank you!"
"Princess Uamil was indeed a ghost. She used what was left of her magic to keep her spirit from passing on long enough to do what she needed to do. And Jiak is actually Gjuam's uncle. He and Gjuam's father are twins. In fact, both of them have a connection to Lady Q'zars, but that and more will all be explained in the next book. I promise you won't have to wait too long for the next installment." As he took out his pen to sign the young man's book, he asked, "If I may ask, what's your name, sir?"

Despite Nick’s attempts not to, he continued to make himself look like an idiot, jaw opening and closing uselessly as he tried to think of what say next. Something, anything. He did not want to squander this opportunity to talk to the author of the best book he had read all year.
“So Lady Q’zars is their mother!” he cried at last. “I knew it!” Headcanon confirmed. Boy did he have some posts to make on certain online forums later. There were some wrong people out there who had to be told exactly how wrong they were.
He was so caught up in the whirlwind of questions in his head it took a second for him to react to Krowe asking him his name.
“Uh, Nick,” he answered. “My name is Nick. Yeah.”
God, he looked so stupid right then and he knew it. He thanked the lord there was not any other student from Yuuei there.
He had not noticed it until that moment, but there was no one else behind him. So, he had all the time in the world to ask Krowe his many questions, about all his headcanons, about the fanfiction he was writing –
The doors to the bookshop were suddenly kicked open with such dramatic force they crashed against the walls, and every single book began to rumble in the shelves as though they were alive. In the doorway stood a balding, chubby middle-aged man who did not honestly look that much of a threat on his own, but the way the books responded to his presence was telling of a Quirk…
“You!” he howled, finger pointed directly at Krowe as his eyes blazed like a wildfire. “You plagiarising bastard!”

The young man was clearly very excited, and this made Alaster happy. He wouldn't mind giving up villainy if it meant he could make millions of people this happy. Sadly, he had a long way to go before that were possible. Oh well. At least he was off to a good start.
So the man's name was Nick. Alaster shook Nick's hand as he signed his book. "Well it's a pleasure to meet you, Nick. I hope that you'll be as ready to take on life's trials as Gjaum was. Stay strong, young Knweglar!" A Knweglar referred to a young knight in-training from his books. He was sure Nick would appreciate the reference.
Suddenly, a middle-aged man kicked the bookstore door open and knocked the nearby books out, startling Alaster. Bloody hell! So much for a peaceful and trouble-free book signing! The man then pointed his finger at Alaster and began accusing him of plagiarism. "I beg your pardon?" Alaster's mood very quickly shifted from surprised to annoyed. How dare he accuse Alaster of plagiarism! Alaster may have stolen many things in his villainous career, but writing was not one of them. Alaster took pride in his writing skills, and to be accused of stealing someone else's work was just insulting! Had he not been out in public in his civilian outfit, he would have attacked the man on the spot.
Alaster coldly spoke to the man, his tone sharper than any knife. "Sir, you are clearly mistaken if you're suggesting that my writing is horrid enough for me to have to stoop so low as to steal another person's work. I can assure you that my writing is my own, and I find it insulting for you to declare otherwise! Now I suggest you take your false accusations and those atrocious manners of yours elsewhere!" However, this man clearly had no intention on leaving.
Things would only get worse for Alaster. The man snapped his fingers, and Nick's book suddenly began shaking violently. The book was forced open, the pages ripped out, and the paper clumped together to form a very sharp knife. The sharp tip of the paper knife was pressed against Alaster's throat. "Now, no more lies! Fess up and admit it! You stole my brother's story, you crook! Confess, or I'll impale your lying throat! And you!" The man pointed at Nick. "Don't you even dare try anything stupid! You'll regret it if you do!"
Bollocks!

So, the strange new attacker had a paper manipulation Quirk. How very bloody appropriate. Nick barely even acknowledged the man’s threat to him, however. He was too busy staring at the remains of his book with all the horror of someone who had just seen their entire family murdered before their eyes. How could this be?
A quick glance around told Nick everyone else was too busy gaping to intervene. Nick quickly slid down onto his hands and kicked out with his back leg into the newcomer’s own legs, sending him tumbling to the floor. The paper knife at Krowe’s throat promptly unfolded.
Nick rose again and helplessly watched the pages used to create the knife flutter away. Paper books were rare enough in the current age. To carelessly abuse them like this in one of the only bookshops left in the country no less caused his heart to cry out in excruciating pain.
He supposed he should ask Krowe if he was alright, but he heard the paper manipulator getting back up. He spun around. The man did not look like he exercised much. It was doubtful he was a fighter. Hell, Nick could see a hint of fear in his eyes, as if a part of him knew what he was doing was going to get him in a hell of a lot of trouble.
At least, that was what Nick thought he saw until the books on the shelf to the left of the man suddenly exploded. Their pages wrapped around each other to form a long paper tendril. The tendril tied itself around Nick’s arm and hauled him across the shop before he could react. He crashed into a table in a flurry of pain and splinters.
He grit his teeth and forced himself to stand again, doing his best to ignore how much his body ached from that. He saw the space between Krowe and the attacking man was now open.

Everything had happened so quickly. One moment, a paper knife was pointed at Alaster's throat, but next thing he knew, the paper knife had broken down into ripped sheets of paper. On one hand, it pained Alaster to see such a fine book be ruined like this. On the other hand, Alaster was spared from being paper cut in the worst way. It was a relief to see that Nick was not just a civilian. At least Alaster didn't have to worry as much about Nick's safety. However, everyone else seemed to be frozen in place. Taking advantage of the crazy man being down for the moment, Alaster quickly took action.
"Everyone, please evacuate the area posthaste! It's not safe here! This man is only interested in going after me. If you leave now, you'll be able to escape unharmed. Go!" Some of the people began running out of the bookstore. Unfortunately, the man got up. What's worse, he used his quirk again, sending Nick flying across the shop. Those who had not been quick to run began screaming. This irritated the man, and he summoned more paper knives. "Shut the fuck up, or I'll make you shut up!" Bollocks!
"Leave the people alone! I thought I was the one you were after! If you have business with me, then let us settle it. However, this does not concern them!" Alaster doubted that the man would listen to reason, and he was of course correct to assume so. "Heh, do you really think I give a shit? Besides..." He pointed at Nick. "This idiotic brat got in my way. I did warn him. He got what he deserved! And now it's your turn!" Snapping his fingers once more, the paper knives floated in the air, all pointed at Alaster and ready to fire.
Damn it! If only everyone else was gone, Alaster would be free to attack this idiot without worrying about blowing his cover. He did have a pocket knife on him, but just drawing it out would cause suspicion. He could not risk that. In this situation, he was about as helpless as a civilian. Alaster looked over at Nick, and not just out of worry for his safety. If that boy has a quirk, now would be a great time for him to use it. Otherwise, Alaster would have no choice but to take a huge risk.

Nick tried to think of what to do. In a place like this, with so much paper, the attacker was at an obvious advantage. It would probably be best to get him out of the shop, however to do that he was likely going to have to Quirk up. If he was fast enough and did not hurt the guy too much then Yuuei would not mind, surely – besides, this was self-defence.
As Nick thought the attacker pointed his furious finger at Krowe again.
“You stole my brother’s ideas, you bastard!” he exclaimed. “How else do you explain his book having a Gjuam and a Lady Q’zars and your book having those, huh? But it’s your book that gets all the fame and glory while my brother can’t afford his house anymore!”
Nick glanced across at Krowe. Could this be true? Coincidental similarities in the world of writing were nothing new. He really did not want the book he had fallen in love with to truly be nothing more than a shameless rip-off of someone else’s work.
Either way, the attacking man was clearly so distraught over his brother’s situation it was making him beyond irrational. He was not going to listen to any kind of reason.
Nick charged the guy. The growth on his back coughed out the biological black sludge that consumed his body and hardened into his armoured hide. The attacker saw him coming and visibly flinched in horror. Nick seized him by the arm and threw him with all his might through the doors of the shop into the rest of the shopping centre. He followed him out to make sure he would not just run back in.
“Calm down, idiot!” he barked at the man, who now lay sprawled on the ground. “I don’t know if what you’re saying is true, but this isn’t going to help!”
He hoped so much it was not true. Only Krowe knew the answer to that, though…

Once again, the man was pointing his finger at Alaster and accused him of stealing his brother's work. How ridiculous! Alaster's work was his own, and it was always that way. He may be a villain, but even he had a sense of honor. Alaster lost many nights of sleep coming up with the ideas, the characters, the plot twists, and even the numerous references hidden within the book's pages. The nerve of this man! If anything, this person's brother probably ripped him off instead!
Wait a minute. Could that be it? Did this man's brother copy Alaster's work and pass it off as his own? Alaster did like to work on his books out in public, so it would be easy for someone to spy on him while he wrote. Perhaps he had plagiarized Alaster, then lied to his brother to make him seem like the original author and try to discredit Alaster. This made perfect sense! Maybe this man wasn't so crazy after all. Maybe he was just being misled by his brother, and came here to attack Alaster out of love and loyalty for his sibling.
Alaster's thoughts were interrupted when he saw the man being flung out of the shop with great force. Surprised, Alaster looked at Nick, only to see some kind of armor on him. So he did have a quirk after all! While being sure to keep his distance, Alaster followed the two outside the shop. Meanwhile, everyone else remaining in the shop was taking the time to evacuate.
"Nick, wait! Perhaps there's more to this story than either of us knows. I think I may have a theory, and if it's true, then this man isn't completely crazy." Alaster looked at the man. "I believe that this man has been lied to by his brother." Alaster then explained to both Nick and the man his theory. Naturally, the man didn't believe him. "Oh look at this lying snake trying to flip this on my brother! Unlike you, my brother is an honorable man, and he would never steal ideas from anyone!"
Good grief! This was going to be very annoying.

Nick stood over the attacker. The attacker took one look at Nick in his armoured state and cowered with his arms over his head.
“Please, not the face!” he begged.
Nick did nothing, however. He glanced around at the other shoppers: a crowd was forming, numerous people pointing to him in his Quirked state with widened eyes. No doubt someone would have called the police. Nick supposed he just had to keep the man from doing anything drastic until the police arrived.
At that moment Krowe appeared and told Nick to hang back, for he believed the attacking man may have been lied to.
“I doubt he’s going to listen to anything you have to say!” Nick remarked.
And just like that the attacking man called Krowe a lying snake, right on cue. Nick suppressed the urge to roll his eyes.
“See what I mean?” he said. “But I suppose you can go ahead and try.” Something the man said did catch Nick’s attention, though. Nick looked back at the man and frowned, even though the man could not see it. “Hold on. Krowe didn’t say anything about your brother stealing ideas: you did. Now why would you bring that up at all, if a part of you deep down didn’t believe it was a possibility?”

Alaster wasn't surprised at the man's skepticism. Of course he would think highly of his brother, so the possibility of him being lied to would not be something he would seriously consider. Alaster may not have appreciated being accused of plagiarism, but he did admire the man's loyalty and trust in his brother, even if said trust might be misplaced.
Nick had then brought up an interesting point. Alaster had not used the exact words "stealing ideas" when he explained how he thought this man's brother may have lied to him. However, the man just did, and he immediately covered his mouth as though he just said something he shouldn't have. What did this mean? Was he in on this after all? Did he suspect his brother of foul play and decided to come to the book signing to make sure? Alaster wasn't sure what to believe anymore.
Stuttering and mumbling, the man was clearly regretting his choice of words. "I...I...damn it! I just..." Alaster looked at the man curiously and asked, "Well? Is there something you want to say to me? Or would you prefer to wait for the police to arrive?" Fear and panic were written all over the man's face. He then put his head down. It seemed like he was ready to confess something, when he was suddenly interrupted by a loud voice. The person the voice belonged to spoke in a sharp tone. "Not another word, fool!"
Another man approached the group. He looked similar to the paper user, but he was taller, thinner, and older. His hands were open and spread out. However, this man had what appeared to be pairs of scissor blades in place of fingers. This stranger then looked at the man and spoke to him. "Good grief. What did I tell you about acting rashly, little brother?"
Great. Just what they needed, more trouble.

Nick groaned inwardly at the sight of yet more trouble. He got in front of Krowe and assumed a fighter’s stance in anticipation of further battle, aware of his Quirk being on a time limit all the while.
“Tatsuya!” exclaimed the initial attacker, sitting up from the floor slightly. “What’re you doing here?”
“I came to see where you ran off to, Kenji,” replied the scissors Quirker, evidently named Tatsuya. “Your wife called me to say you barrelled out of the house yelling about my book. I figured that meant you’d be here.”
Nick’s eyes narrowed behind his biological mask.
“So, this is the man who had the same ideas as you,” he said to Krowe.
Either Krowe had stolen this man’s ideas, this man had stolen Krowe’s, or it was all one big crazy coincidence. Now was the time to find out.
Kenji raised a hand to yet again point his accusing finger at Krowe.
“This is the guy!” he cried. “The guy whose ideas you took – no, wait, I mean the guy who took your ideas – argh, I don’t know what to believe anymore!”
Nick wondered if this Tatsuya had stolen ideas and lied to his brother about it before. Perhaps there was a part of Kenji that was beginning to catch onto this, but the rest of him was in some serious denial about it. At least, that was the way it was beginning to seem, if he had to guess what was going on here.
“Get out of this place, Kenji,” huffed Tatsuya, who now frowned down at his brother in clear annoyance. “You’ve got a wife and three kids, for God’s sake. Don’t get yourself arrested.”
Kenji began; “But –”
“Go, idiot!” Tatsuya roared with enough power in his voice to said Kenji scurrying away through the gathering crowd. Now Tatsuya turned his attention fully to Nick and Krowe.
“So did you do it?” Nick demanded. “Did you take Krowe’s ideas and lie about it? What’s really going on here?”

Alaster watched Tatsuya carefully. He wasn't sure what he was up to. For all he knew, this guy might be even worse than his brother. Alaster was surprised when the man put his hands up. "You don't need to worry about a fight. I'm not here to attack either of you, or anyone for that matter. I just came to talk." Seeing Alaster eye Tatsuya's scissor fingers, he sighed. "It's understandable to suspect me because of these, but as I said, I don't want a fight. Unlike my brother's quirk, mine isn't one that can be turned off at will." Alaster remained cautious. He was not one to trust a stranger, especially one whose own brother had just attacked and even tried to kill him. Still, Alaster was curious as to what he had to say. "Well if you want to talk, then go right ahead. I'm curious as to why your brother thinks that my own work is somehow yours."
What Tatsuya did next surprised Alaster. He was bowing down. He actually got down on the floor and bowed. "I'm so sorry Mr. Krowe! I'm very sorry for the trouble my brother and I caused! I'm actually a really big fan of yours! Reading your books is what inspired me to write again after having quit years ago!" What? This was all coming out of nowhere. Still, Alaster let Tatsuya continue with no interruptions. "You see, the truth is that my brother and I are just barely getting by with our jobs. He even works two jobs to try to support his family." Alaster was disgusted. So was that why Kenji had attacked him? Or was there more to this story than just simply greed? "This wouldn't normally be a problem, since we both still live relatively comfortable lives despite not making much, but something horrible happened. Something I haven't told Kenji yet because I didn't want to stress him out even more than he already is."
"You see, I have another younger brother. His name is Iwao, and he's in the hospital. He has a nasty heart disease. He's in need of surgery, and I desperately need some money to be able to keep him alive. He doesn't have insurance of any kind. I don't make enough to be able to help him, and I can't ask Kenji for help knowing that he's a hair away from debt. He has a wife and three kids he needs to support, so who am I to go be yet another source of stress to him? I just wanted him to not get involved. That's when I saw you, Mr. Krowe. You were working on your book at the park one day. When you turned away to feed the birds, some fans of yours showed up and wanted to talk. I saw your notes while you were distracted. It was one of the most amazing things I have read." Alaster remembered that day. He was out in the park, brainstorming ideas. He usually hated being outside, but it was very cloudy that day, so he didn't mind. He remembered seeing a few fans of his there, and he stopped to talk to them after he fed the birds some seeds he bought at the store. They talked for hours. Was Tatsuya really there that day? And was Alaster so easily distracted that someone was able to look at and copy his notes?
"As you talked to your fans, a horrible thought appeared in my head. If I could somehow steal your ideas and make money off of them, I'd be able to help Iwao get his surgery. It pained me to do this to one of my favorite authors, but I was weak and desperate for money. A few days later, Kenji saw the notes I had hastily copied. He was astounded. It was far better than my usually simple writing. He realized that it wasn't my writing style at all. He confronted me, asking what was going on. I told him that I was in need of money, but I didn't tell him why. I had to lie to him. He would have been devastated if he found out about Iwao. Kenji decided to help me out, despite knowing that what I was doing was wrong. He was the one who decided to accuse you of plagiarism in public. He figured that if he could discredit you and then sue you for plagiarism, then he'd be able to get the money from your book and give that money to me. I didn't want that. Believe me, I really never wanted it to go that far. But then yesterday, the doctor called me and informed me that Iwao was getting worse. Without the surgery, he would die in less than a month! Reluctantly, I agreed to Kenji's plan."
"I know what I did was wrong, and I have to go to prison. I can accept that. But please, is there any way that you can forgive my brother for what he's done?" Tatsuya was in tears now. "I never wanted him to throw away his life like this. If I go to prison, then so be it. But not him, please not him! I know that he never really wanted to hurt anyone, and that he's sorry that he did what he did. Spare my brother, please! I'll do anything!" As Tatsuya continued sobbing, Alaster was conflicted. On one hand, he couldn't care less about this man or his money or family issues. Hell, this could be one elaborate lie and this man could be a terrific liar and making up this pathetic sob story just to get him to lower his guard. But on the other hand, if this man was telling the truth, then he was touched by the sheer loyalty the brothers had for each other. Loyalty was a very rare trait to see in people, and Alaster always respected those who show great loyalty to their cause. Looking at Nick, Alaster asked, "Well Nick? What do you think about this?"

Nick looked Tatsuya up and down, his frown deepening with every second that passed.
“I don’t know if I’d trust him,” he said to Krowe. “It’s possible he’s lying to get your sympathy – and more importantly, your money.” Which he had already tried to get by stealing Krowe’s ideas. “He’s apparently something of a liar.”
He was about to add more when a sudden stabbing ache went through his body. For a frantic moment he thought Tatsuya had impaled him, but then he realised it was because his time with his Quirk was up. His armour peeled off his body and receded back into the growth. He fell onto one knee, gasping for breath as though he had just resurfaced from water.
Shit. Now Krowe was undefended, and while Nick was sure he probably had a Quirk of his own there was no knowing how good it would be against Tatsuya’s blade-hands.
Tatsuya did not move, however. His gaze remained fixed on Krowe, not even acknowledging Nick’s change.
“Whether you believe me or not is up to you,” he said. “But I swear I’m telling the truth this time. I’ll take the blame for my brother’s actions here. If it lands me in prison, so be it. Anything to keep him and Iwao safe.”
Tatsuya seemed honest in his desire not to escalate things further, Nick thought though his mind was now murky, but whether he was telling the whole truth or not was up to Krowe to decide.
Police sirens echoed from outside the shopping centre. Tatsuya still did not move.
