Sundown at Musutafu shopping district saw a lot of people for various reasons. Some were mothers and wives grabbing food for dinner, others were single businessmen taking the long way home, there were students grabbing a newly released book or a new outfit on their way home from school...and every few people there was a U.A student, still in uniform, being whispered about by the common folk as they went about their own life for their own reasons. Those heroes in training. Those shining beacons of hope. They commanded attention wherever they went.
Ugh. Barf.
Susumu was among the crowd on this day, but not how she usually went with her laptop and camera and fabulous sense in fashion. In fact she didn't look anything like she did normally. Her short green hair was tucked away underneath a long blonde wig that was done with a bright, sparkly band and a perm to keep it wavy. Her eyes had contacts to turn them a deep, ocean blue and decorated with thicker make-up than she would ever wear in public. Her clothes were a nearby high school's uniform, though with the lack of ribbon and colorful stockings that were certainly not part of regulation, Susumu's entire look screamed "delinquent girl" more than it said anything like "respectable student".
She blew a pink bubble out between her lips, snapped it with her teeth, and kept walking with her eyes glued to her phone. Nobody paid her any notice because, despite her gaudy appearance, she actually blended in just fine with a number of other teenagers around here.
Why was she disguised? Because she had to track somebody.
Nicolas Cross. That was a name she hadn't expected to see again. He'd been the target of her darling Gil's ire a month or so back, but after following the kid around for long enough to discover his social life was that of gray paste, G had dropped the case. Susumu had put him off in a folder of boring people and nearly forgotten about him...until this mess with Miku being stalked, yet again, brought him to the front of her mind. He'd been under suspicion by G for something involving his little girl, and Susumu having chosen to protect the girl like her own, wanted to be sure that there weren't any lingering threads connecting the two.
Wouldn't you know it, though, this time she found something shiny.
While browsing his files she'd found a document hidden away that didn't even have a name. Being the sort of woman who valued privacy she'd opened it in a heartbeat. Its contents had been interesting. The rantings of a high school boy about his incompetent classmates, the stress of heroism, blah blah blah, all that fun angsty shit. But one line in particular had stood out to her. He mentioned Miku--not vaguely, but by name specifically--and, in his own words:
"That girl needs to stop sticking her nose places it shouldn't be."
She couldn't have asked for a prettier clue than that.
What was Nick Cross talking about? Had Miku noticed something about him that she shouldn't have? He must have a juicy secret that he felt important enough to get angry at the thought of being revealed. What was it, though? Something familial? Personal? Scandalous? It might have been your usual high school aged nothing that was being blown far out of proportion. However, it could also be something bigger.
What kind of secrets did a potential hero have to hide?
So, donning her disguise, Susumu had tracked his school laptop's location to the bookstore she'd known him to frequent when he wasn't doing his boring routine of staring at U.A's grass grow. She had to get his phone or tablet...something he wasn't using for school had to have more data, and maybe some more secrets. The issue was getting close enough to get them, either digitally or physically, without being noticed.
She went into the little bookstore, tucked her phone in her pocket, and to browse the shelf while pretending not to look in his direction.

Nick had needed to get away, even for only ten minutes. Sometimes the Yuuei campus was too damn suffocating. He had done his best to tough it out and keep a low profile as the Gifted Underground had instructed him to do, but it had gotten too much. His failed exercises still hung over him like a toxic smog. He chafed at being reminded of them every time he saw his classmates. Writing that angry little vent on his laptop had not helped as much as he thought it might, hence his decision to come out here.
The book shop was quite possibly the only one of its kind in the entirety of Japan. There was certainly nowhere else like it for him. He loved the earthen smell of real paper pages, something you simply could not recreate with an e-reader. The smell helped to calm his nerves. The atmosphere in the shop was quiet and peaceful thanks to there hardly being anyone around, which he also greatly appreciated and relaxed at. If there was one thing he despised, it was crowds, and both his campus and the city were hellishly crowded places.
His hand ghosted along a row of spines as he muttered to himself in English; often he subconsciously slipped into English when talking to himself without even realising. “Read it, read it, read it – ugh, why do they still publish this hack – read it, read it…” He stopped on a title he did not recognise and pulled out a doorstopper almost as thick as the tree its pages had been made from. The blurb sounded promising enough, and there was a dragon on the cover, which was always a good sign to him. It would do. He needed a big book like this to get lost in to forget his troubles for the time being.
He ambled over to the counter, currently oblivious to the other customers in the shop. None of them had yet to do anything to make themselves noteworthy to him.
“This one, please,” he said, thankfully remembering to speak Japanese again as he handed the book over to the clerk, a man who’s Quirk had gifted him with lime green skin and nothing else, it seemed. Nick did pity those who’s Quirks did not offer them any abilities above the Quirkless. To have been given a worthless gift was as terrible as not being given a gift at all. He said nothing on it, however, and merely stood and waited for the clerk to bag his book.

There he was at the register, looking as he had the first time she'd seen him in person; all hard edges and slick looks. With that and his Quirk he'd probably make a very popular hero, especially with the ladies. Susumu snickered into the magazine she was "browsing" at the thought. There wasn't much time for her to speculate on humor, though, since he was about to go. Crap. She couldn't follow him to U.A.
She moved to the shelf he'd been at and picked up one of the weightier books before making her way to the register next to him, placing it on the counter and popping her gum in her cheek while she waited. Without her saying anything the clerk began ringing up her book while the clerk before Nick did the exact same, only a few steps ahead.
Her eyes looked him over, a curious little smile forming on her glossy pink lips. "Oh, hey, you. Yeah you." She addressed him directly, though she didn't dare try to touch him to get his attention. "You go to the hero school, right? Hot damn. I didn't think any of them came to this hole-in-the-wall place." The clerk handed her the book and she gave them a little grin of thanks before turning fully to Nick. "Whatcha buying? Maybe I should get it next, if a future hero is lookin' at it."
She didn't know what kind of person Nick might be interested in. For now, playing a social outcast like a delinquent was a vague enough starting ground for any kind of character. She just had to play by ear.

Just like that, Nick’s peaceful tranquillity was shattered. He resisted a scowl as he turned his head to look at whoever dared to disturb his time for self-recovery. He was met with a truly unpleasant sight. A messy uniform, unkempt hair, garish stockings that defied regulation; all the hallmarks of a delinquent on the road to nowhere. The only thing missing was the damn baby bump. His nose curled in disapproval. There could not have been any kind of person he wanted to speak to less, but he knew ignoring her would only encourage her to provoke him further.
“What the rest of them do isn’t my business,” he replied with clear airy disinterest. “And buy whatever you like. That’s not my business, either.”
He turned away from her and back to the clerk, but his gaze lingered on her from the corner of his eye. He could not place it, but something about this girl seemed almost – familiar. In addition, she was being too friendly for a complete stranger. While it was not the first time someone had commented to Nick on his status as a Yuuei student, his upbringing under the Gifted Underground had taught him to be wary of anyone and everyone. Especially someone so, just, ugh.
He left the shop without further word to her, but remained on edge and subtly glanced behind him as he made for the shopping centre’s exit. If she followed him, then something was up.

Susumu's brow twitched slightly at the dismissive tone of voice and the way he completely brushed her off. So he was one of those sorts in person. Wow, what a shame. But was Susumu really expecting anything less out of somebody going to that stupid school? Miku went to it though. Urgh. Dammit. He took his book and left and Susumu stormed out after him, holding her own book tight to her chest as she went. This cocky shit wasn't getting away.
"HEY!" Her voice raised up over the crowd, but nobody really looked over to see what was happening. Given her appearance it was expected that she would be loud, and even if people did look, who cares? It was refreshing, actually. She should wear disguises more often. "What kind of wannabe hero looks down on somebody like that?! You think you're better than me because of how I dress, is that it? Is it?! Look at me when I'm talking to you, you cocky son of a bitch!"
With the book she'd just acquired Susumu pulled her arm back, took aim, and chucked the damn thing at the back of Nick's head. It was a nice thick book, one about programming actually, since she might as well buy something she was seriously going to read. But right now she was pretty peeved off at this kid. Heroes. Please. What a bullshit title.
"Do you get off with that stick up your ass, huh?!"

Nick heard her coming, as did the entire shopping centre most likely, but did not react fast enough. The book collided with an echoing whack! He spat some English curses as he stopped dead in his tracks, one hand reaching up to the throbbing spot where the book had hit him.
This was not the behaviour of someone trying to spy on someone else, he realised. Perhaps he was just being paranoid, and she really was just an annoying obnoxious delinquent waste of air. That seemed so likely to him now as a result of her actions he wondered why he had ever suspected her of anything in the first place. His upbringing truly had left him overly-paranoid.
As he was, white hot anger surged through him. He clenched his teeth and glared back at the irritating girl, eyes flashing dangerously.
“Where do I get off?” he snapped. “Where do you get off? Do that again and see what happens!”
In his current frame of mind, with the wounds of his failures as fresh as they were, he was not in the mood to be provoked like this. The last thing he needed was some stupid, no-mark cow getting on his every last nerve like this. “Leave me the hell alone.”

"Oh yeah? Or you'll do what, pretty boy? Newsflash: going to that fancy school doesn't make you better than anyone." Susumu stormed up to Nick until she was maybe three feet from him, then crossed her arms and glared up at him through the thick blonde bangs on her head. With this attitude she was sure he saw he as nothing but another irritating teenager trying to cause trouble. Which was good. She needed him to think she was nothing so she could get into him without raising suspicion. But Christ, this guy was a foul-tempered bastard for a so-called Hero. This was kind of fun.
She just had to ignore that she was picking on somebody with a Quirk that could likely smear her into the dirt. Eh. He wouldn't dare do it in public, would he? That'd cross so many lines it'd be...
...well, her territory, actually, but that was besides the point.
Her lips pulled into a sneering smile, and she tipped her head back so she was looking up at him rather than glaring. "Did I hit you too hard, huh? Mr. Heroic Douche-bag can't take some paper to the head? To think I was going to read your stupid fantasy book just 'cause you're in U.A. But it looks like they don't can't teach a prick to stop being a prick!"
She bent over to pick up her thrown book and dust the cover off. While she wasn't looking directly at him her voice lowered in volume and tone. "Fucking shame. You're supposed to be the future and you're nothing better than the blue blood jack-offs in my class. Hope your Quirk actually does shit, because your attitude ain't winning you anything."

Nick let her rant. It was all meaningless hot air to him. The only thing she said that registered with him at all was that going to Yuuei did not make him better.
“I know it doesn’t,” he said in response to this, once she was finally done.
He raised a hand. The disc on his back bulged out and he allowed the biological sludge within to spill forth. It consumed the hand in its sludgy state and reached the base of his neck before he spoke again; “This does.”
He called it back into the disc before it fully covered and transformed him with some difficulty, straining his body from the effort. It was merely a warning. He had a powerful Quirk that put him on a level above most others, with or without Yuuei, and if she provoked him enough…
He forced himself to take calming breaths. Even if the students were permitted to defend themselves, and throwing that book definitely counted as the first blow, was she really worth it? She was trash. How could he let someone like her get to him? Ugh. Things really had not been going well for him lately.
Once his anger had died down just enough, he looked at her face again. No. Something about this girl’s face was familiar to him. He had seen this face before, several times, he was sure of it. But where? And when? She was not acting at all like a potential spy, though. Spies had to be subtle. Low profile. Nick of all people knew that. His tired mind ached trying to figure out what was going on here and if he were just being paranoid or not.
He began walking away without another word. He could not believe he was thinking this, but the sooner he got back to Yuuei, the bloody better. He left the shopping centre and decided to take a route through the quieter backstreets. It would make it easier to tell if this girl was still going to follow him, after all. And if he really had to use his Quirk to make her leave him alone, the less witnesses the easier.

Susumu glared at Nick up until his skin became covered with an unusual black slime. Her eyes widened, confusion filling her features instead, before he countered that U.A didn't make him better but that did. That sludge must have been his Quirk. What the hell was it? Body armor of some sort? That...that was actually a good Quirk for a fighter to have, and if it did anything extra special asides from protecting the person wearing it then it was golden. So the cocky little asshole had some bite to go with that bark. "Tsh..."
Now that she had a clue what he could do, and saw this was getting nowhere, she needed a different tactic. He turned and stormed away from the busy streets. Her clock was ticking here. If he reached U.A she would need an entirely new plan now that he'd seen her face.
...or maybe she did have a way to get this plan to work after all.
After five seconds she followed after Nick, through the calmer routes between shops where smaller cafes or poorer quality goods were sold. Not as many people here. Still, she could see something useful as she walked through. Cameras. Security cameras in windows. A camera shop down the alley itself. Cheap phones for sale that were definitely scam-bait but still had a functional camera...this was perfect set-up.
One of her eyes turned into pure static as she walked, the split between her Quirk and her other eye causing her stomach to lurch, and she adjusted the wig's bangs to hide it from sight. Then she kept walking until she was almost up to Nick again. "Hey there, dickhead, I wasn't done with you! You think that shiny slime actually means something??"
Would the trap work?

Nick was not all that surprised she followed him. Something inside him still sank, however. He stopped and took steady breaths to try and calm himself once again, which was not as easy as before.
“I think it means a lot, yes,” he answered.
He turned to face her. His eyes narrowed warningly as they flicked over her, studying her more closely. He racked his mind and tried to think why her face felt familiar to him. Had he glimpsed it before in the street? More than once, enough for it to have registered in his subconscious?
“What exactly do you want from me?” he demanded. “You’re very persistent. You want to go on a date or something, is that it? Or is it something a bit more substantial, hmm?”
Perhaps he was just being paranoid, but it was not as though he did not have reasons to be, given his true status with the Gifted Underground and his knowledge that they had let information about him slip, even if they had thankfully not given his name. That was what had caused that Miku girl to get on his case, after all, and she had come so very nearly close to the truth just thinking about it made his stress levels soar.
He really did wonder how Miku had known. How a seemingly frail, innocent girl had heard something only those with more hidden connections should have. Could this other girl be related to that? Her level of unsubtle obnoxiousness still gave him doubt, but he could not help beginning to wonder…

"A date? Pssh, you wish! Maybe I was trying to make small talk with a cute hero at the bookshop, but with that attitude of yours I don't think I'd want you putting those hands anywhere on me." Once again she stopped right up to Nick, about an arms length away, and placed her hands on her hips so she could glare up at him with her visible eye. "Or maybe I wanted to meet a real future hero because you've got a chance not all of us have, and then you had to open your mouth and ruin it all. But now I'm just pissed off at you!"
Bait him. You need to bait him into throwing a punch. Be loud. Be obnoxious. Get in his face. Channel Meiko a bit...just no stabbing.
"What kind of shitty person do you have to be to think your Quirk makes you better than people? It doesn't make you smarter than me. You wouldn't know, but I've got full marks in all my classes! But you're too busy staring down your nose, because you've got power like all the other bastards at the top, to see that people like me exist!"
Reaching forward one arm she tried to push Nick in the side, right against the chest, in a standard "shove off" gesture. "Some hero you're going to turn out to be! I'll be you're gonna be kicked out for that shitty behavior before the first year even ends! And I'll laugh when you do!"

Nick did not wish. It had been sarcasm through and through. She was about as far from his type as Pluto was from the sun. For some unfathomable reason Rin of all people flashed into his mind just then and his entire being balked in confusion. What the hell? He dismissed that as fast as he could and focused again on the annoying girl of the present, not the past.
“Because it does,” he shot back at her remark about his Quirk making him better, which was as far as he was concerned the plain and simple truth. She was irritating him too much for him to try and hide his true feelings in that regard.
He saw her hand and moved like lightning, his own hand catching her wrist in a vice-like grip moments before she would have made contact. Once again anger surged within him and he glared down at her as though she were less than the dirt beneath his shoes.
“I don’t care what your idea of a ‘hero’ is, or what your ideals are.” Truthfully he was not sure her ideals were even genuine, or of anything about her, but he continued anyway; “If you believe in them, sign up for Yuuei yourself. Back up your beliefs and maybe then I'd actually be impressed.” He tightened his already fierce grasp. “It’s not my fault that the world changed the way it did. All I can do is be a part of it. Now run along, or I’m really going to start thinking there’s something more going on here.”

Susumu barely managed a gasp of pain before her wrist was grabbed, and a shudder went through her whole body. Fuck fuck fuck that was the arm of hers that had been burned when her computer blew up. That fucking hurt! She tried to pull it away, but to no avail--though the movement jostled her sleeve, revealing the wrapped bandages underneath it. When escape didn't seem possible she just stared up at Nick as he coldly spoke down to her, both literally and figuratively. This...asshole. She had been purposefully baiting him, trying to get a rise, but he wasn't just a cocky heroic piece of shit.
There was something seriously wrong with him. He looked down on her like she was dirt on his boots. He sounded more like a villain than her.
Funny enough, she thought he'd get along great with Amadeus.
He tightened his hold on her and she flinched. This was going to suck. But she needed him to do more than just grab her like this to get this ball rolling. Just remember who this was for. What this was for. It could all be for nothing, but if this brat was linked to the people after Miku...
Susumu drew in a shuddering breath, tilted her head back, and spat.
Right at Nick's smug, pretty face.
"Fuck. You."

Nick glimpsed the burns and bandages for just a moment. The results of petty delinquent squabbles? The burns were a little unusual in that regard, but she could have brawled someone with a fire-based Quirk. Then again, perhaps this was more evidence there was something off about this girl, a feeling that was growing stronger by the moment.
Whatever his thoughts were, they all came to a screeching, shuddering halt as the disgusting cow spat at him. Right in his face. As if she could have done anything more repulsive. He shot her a glare that could have withered an Amazon rainforest, the sheer anger this act gave him overriding any common sense and previous thoughts.
“You can’t afford this,” he growled.
He unleashed a wicked slap towards her face that would sting like a horde of wasps were it to meet its mark. He did not yet activate his Quirk, but he felt the disc on his back itch with eagerness and bulge out for a flash. If she kept provoking him, he was going to use it. No doubt about it now. With his other hand he wiped away her saliva, teeth bared like an enraged animal. The absolute nerve of this piece of trash.

"You ca--"
Whatever she was about to say was interrupted by Nick's hand slapping her across the face, stunning Susumu for a moment. Adrenaline started rushing through her veins, causing her heart to start pounding loudly in her ears. Ah. This felt...like the first night she'd met G. Her lips twitched into a grin. This pain and this fear and this excitement. It was different, yes, because this was a heroic wannabe teenager with no features that she liked at all. Nothing about him was her "type". But still, getting slapped by him still made her blood boil over. What a rush.
Don't lose focus. This isn't for you. It's for Miku. For Gil.
You have to get answers. I have to. I have to.
She bit her tongue, turned her head back towards Nick, and with that grin still on her face tried to swipe at his throat with her sharp nails. Not to wrap it around--she didn't have the angle or the height for it--but if her nails found purchase on his skin they would surely sting, if not draw blood. But her strike was slowed by the angle of her other arm.
Still. She needed to keep him going until he used his Quirk. Once he did, she would have him, and she could get what she needed from him.
