| Gentle flute music disturbed the calm afternoon of the school grounds. It resonated through the trees surrounding the garden, and even flown into the nearby practice building in calm and soothing tunes. The melody was even like a spring breeze, without the shrillness or hurry of an unpracticed flutist.
Shinme held the old-style bamboo flute in his hands, the flute’s body raised to the right side of his face as he played a classic Chinese piece to the wind. Nowadays, he hadn’t had the chance to play it at all, and honestly almost forgot about it. If it weren’t for the reminder he set on his phone, he would not have picked it up this day either. It wasn’t that he disliked practicing it – there was a reason he chose the flute as his instrument, after all. But he was more used to just sing in his free time, so often the poor instrument was left in the background. But now, he was playing while he sat on one of the sturdier trees outside the practice building, wearing the school’s winter uniform with a wide-sleeved coat that looked more like a Japanese styled black haori than anything else. His back was against the trunk of the tree, one knee raised, feet on the branch he was sitting on, the other leg dangling beside in the air.
For about two more months, Shinme was more or less free. He enrolled to U.A., was told he would start school as a second year in April, and he had most of his paperwork ready. In his current school, he took his year-end exams in advance, and he was given days off school for arranging his new one. He was allowed to settle into a dorm room to get accustomed to U.A., and so he had a chance to meet with a few students who might be his school mates later on.
But given so much free time also meant that he was prone to getting bored.
He could only find himself so much to do without any classes to go to, and not even singing gigs or photoshoots were arranged for him yet. Ultimately, he was honestly and utterly bored. Annoying the dorm mates with flying furniture wasn’t fun anymore either, and around this area, he was advised against using his quirk too openly so not to pick the interest of authorities. The school rules were already too suffocating for him, and he already managed to break a few of them, if only just barely. If the start was already like this, the next few years might get a little bit complicated.
Playing his flute eased his boredom a bit. The wind followed his music, picked up leaves and twigs from the ground and danced around the tree Shinme was sitting on, and around the courtyard. It was gentle, without any force behind it, so even if someone walked past him, the wind would not hit them too hard. However, the leaves and twigs in the air might annoy someone if it ended up in their face...
“Ah, sorry, sorry! I hope you weren’t hurt!” He would apologize with a wide grin and seemingly without an ounce of shame, breaking the music for the few sentences. The breeze would ease down slowly when there was no music, but would pick up the same way again as soon as Shinme raised the flute to his mouth and started playing again.

The longer that Katsumi spent in UA the more that she realized that she spent a lot of her free time by herself. She didn’t find anything wrong with that, to her that was just a neutral fact about her. She was always huddled away from others, not interacting with anyone beyond a need for something or class. Right now she was having some time for herself outside of class, a book that looked a little too big for her small hands in front of her. It was another book on economics and economic theories that her grandfather had sent her, it’s contents were comprehensible to her.
She was having a hard time concentrating and taking in her reading. She felt uneasy and anxious shifting on her seat on a bench as she tried her hardest to focus. She spent a few minutes before she gently she gently shut the book and gently tossed it onto the seat next to her.” Futile…” She mumbled quietly as she glared at the book, as if doing so would help with her current dilemma. She was tempted to send the book flying before she calmed herself by breathing deeply and reaching for the book once more.
Thwap!
She froze mid reach as a twig impacted her forehead and fell on her body. The twig hitting her didn’t hurt her but it did shock her enough into freezing. “What…” She finally noticed the twigs and leaves moving around the courtyard, commanded by an unseen wind. In tandem with that she could hear the distinct sounds of a flute being played. Her eyes sought out the source of the phenomenon, setting her sights on the flute playing boy in the courtyard. She stood up, tossing the twig back to the wind and began to approach. She used her Quirk to stop twigs and leaves from hitting her, robbing them of all their speed, before gently sending back into the wind.
Finally she stood in front of the flute player and stared neutrally. She maintained the stare for a few seconds even after the flute player apologized before she sat cross legged across from him and remained still.

| Oops. Looks like he indeed hit someone in the face with the debris his wind picked up, and even failed to notice, not until she walked up closer to his tree. Shinme wasn’t sitting on a high branch, so he saw the girl walking up to him pretty clearly. Leaning forward just a little, he repeated the apology when no answer came, and got ready for a chewing-out. Was it possible he hit a graduate student, someone much, much stronger than Shinme could ever be? Could it be that Shinme got into big trouble this time, and he is in for a beating? With an embarrassed smile and a sweating back, he scratched the back of his head to lower any possible threat level, and the seriousness of the situation.
“It was honestly not on purpose, could you please forgive the mishaps of this humble one?” He switched to an overly polite talking style from his normally casual one just for that sentence, but when yet again, there was no response aside from the girl plopping down in front of him. Just watching.
Now that Shinme wasn’t playing, and wasn’t otherwise making sounds to control his quirk, the wind quieted down, and all the leaves and twigs floated gently to the ground around them. Whoever this girl was, she was really quiet – aside from being very pretty –, and Shinme’s first reaction was to feel very, very bad. He honestly felt worse now than if he was beaten up and chewed out for the hit. This stare was more unnerving than any scolding he expected. Shifting on the branch, Shinme completely faced the stranger, both legs dangling down in front of him, touching the ground, but he refused to completely get off the tree. He liked this tree. He will bravely face any scolding on this tree.
“My name is Shinme, it’s nice to meet you.” A bow, while he continued to sit. “Well, uh, nicer to meet you? I honestly didn’t want to hurt you. Will you give me your name? I will try to make it up to you in some way. Can I maybe get you a drink? Or something? It would be my pleasure!” Idly, he glanced toward the bench where she was sitting before, and spotted the book left there. “Did I disturb you in your studying? I would offer to help, but I am just starting out in this school, so no idea how well that would go. But I have faith I can be an enthusiastic cheerleader while you study!”
Katsumi had quickly learned what all other that had met Shinme so far did: he talked. A lot.

Katsumi said nothing and just continued to stare at the boy. Her face didn’t betray whatever she was feeling or thinking of, staying in her trademarked stoic black expression. She remained menacingly still, listening to the boy talk and talk, introducing himself along the way. ‘So this boy’s name is Shinme.’ She didn’t dwell on the thoughts that held the boy in contempt, though she did agree with herself that he talked far too much for her liking. Finally she cleared her throat and blinked slowly, breaking her stare. “I don’t like talking.” She finally said after several minutes of silent staring.
Her hand flicked towards her book on the bench and sent it flying in an arc. The book remained shut but spun through the air with as much grace as a heavy paperback could handle. She guided her bookinto her hand, lightly smacking against it with a light thud before she opened up again from the beginning and waited. She read it for a few seconds before she took her eyes off of her reading and looked up expectantly at the boy.
“Play.” She declared as firmly as she can before her eyes drifted back to her book.

| No scolding was given, which was an oddity. A welcomed one, but still an oddity. He wasn’t about to complain though.
It was surprising to meet with a girl who didn’t like to talk. Well, it wasn’t really the fact she didn’t like to do it, but that she indeed didn’t talk. Shinme met people who say that “ugh, I don’t like to talk!” and they still answered questions with short sentences, meaning, they still engaged in conversations. But surprisingly, this girl was true to her words – she indeed didn’t talk. Didn’t even answer his questions, even though some of those were nothing more than rhetorical. Well, except the one concerning her name, but Shinme wasn’t one to be too hung up on that. He can ask later, once she feels more comfortable. Until then, it was okay to think of her as the pretty pink-haired girl he met with. “Ahaha, sure, sure, that’s fine, you don’t need to talk if you don’t want to. I can do all the talking. You probably already noticed that.”
In what Shinme assumed was a slight demonstration of her quirk, she pulled the book she left on the bench toward her. “Whoa!” He let out a quiet cheer at that, liking how casual she was about it. Many people barely ever showed what they were capable of, while Shinme occasionally let his wind loose when he sang or played his flute. Seems like she wasn’t one to hold back on her quirk if it made her life easier. He kinda appreciated that. “Whoa whoa, are you telekinetic? That WAS your quirk, right? Oh wait, you don’t like talking. It’s fine, no need to answer, I’ll figure out sooner or later, haha.” He nodded, swinging his legs as he was sitting on the low branch, toes kicking at the grass below. “Huh?” But still, the most surprising thing was, after calling the book, she asked him, simply enough, to keep playing. He looked at her, then at the flute in his hand, then back at her. He twirled the dizi between his fingers as a show, and with the same movement, he raised it to his mouth. He started to play. It was a slower piece, evoking the images of wide plains, wilderness and dragons, something out of a fantasy movie.
Oh. He understood now. If he played the flute, he couldn’t run his mouth endlessly. It was the perfect tactic to shut him up, he admitted, and couldn’t even be mad for it.
The wind started to gently sway too in a circle around the two of them, picking up the leaves in a waltz. Shinme didn’t stop playing when the song ended. He switched to a quicker one with jumpy tones and thrills, one that was like a battlemusic of mages. The leaves gained a faster pace, colliding with each other and with the leaves of the tree they were sitting under.
With the end of the second piece, Shinme barely pulled the flute down to ask: “Which one do you like more? Slower, or faster?” He would continue with whatever type of music would be better for her reading. Since it was instrumental, both could work well, but depending on the material, who knows which one she would prefer more. “I know more if you want to hear them. In the meantime, you can tell me what you are reading. Just show me the cover?”

The barest tiwtch on her eyebrow appeared on her face for a brief moment. “I was unclear.” She muttered, taking her eyes off her book. “Not ‘I don’t like to talk’, I don’t like talking.” She repeated herself. “The quiet, the stillness, or pleasant tunes. Those are preferable. People who talk too much are…” She drifted of, trying to think of the nicest way she could describe chatty people for her. “Irksome...” She decided. “But for the sake of continued peace I shall answer your question. Yes that was my Quirk, it exerted domain over the speed of things..” She turned back the book in her hands and began to read anew. The contents of the book going over her head a leaving her feeling like just looking at words rather than reading.
She let Shinme play his music on his flute. She could appreciate the organized sounds of music more than incessant chatter or noise, but silence would always be more preferable to her. Still she swayed lightly with the music as she read, like a blade of grass swaying with the wind. She could see at the edge of her vision leaves swirling around them as he played. When the slow song came to an end the boy switched over to a faster paced song. She twitched in place at the change of pace. The change of music took her out of her reading.
“I preferred the slower paced one.” She sndighed and held up the book in her hand. “A book on economic theories that my grandfather sent me, reading feels like feeding on air.” She sighed and lowered it. “I don’t understand a word of this beyond doing stuff to money.” She admitted, opening the book at the page she had stopped reading it from. “But I’ll give an effort to trying to understand it.”

| Shinme grinned. “Irksome, huh? I can understand that.” He nodded, as if he also knew people who are annoying with their overall runny mouths, while also knowing that he was one of those people. Honestly, he wasn’t bothered by those opinions, not by hers either. But he was aware, at least. Hearing her say “continued peace” made his smile widen. He wasn’t exactly the epitome of peace, not by default. He was only ever considered peaceful when he was either playing the flute, or was singing a more melancholic song, because his singing voice was said to be soothing. He had a feeling that she wouldn’t really like to hear him sing anything though. At least, the flute seemed to be okay by her standards. But, on the topic of her quirk. “Oh! You manipulate speed? Wow, that is awesome!” She said it so eloquently too, while Shinme simplified it down, he almost felt sad for it.
Either case, he was asked to keep playing to keep quiet, all the while watching her reactions. As soon as he switched tunes, it was quite obvious which one she preferred. “Slower ones, got it.” And so, he started a soothing tone yet again, one that rooted itself in the high mountains of China. It was a piece that could continue on and on for as long as he wanted with its repetition, but after a while, he did plan to switch again, maybe so quietly that it would be barely noticeable. While he played, he also paid attention to her words about the book and what it was about.
“Does he want you to learn this stuff? It sounds like a complicated reading material.” He stopped his play only to ask the questions, then would go back to continue. Who knows, the tunes might help her concentrate. Or, maybe it would be a welcomed distraction from the boring and heavy material, either case. “Is he a businessman? Your grandfather.”

Katsumi visibly relaxed as the slower paced music started playing once more. She began to lightly sway with the music only to stop herself abruptly, straightening again and refocusing. Her eyes flicked back down to the complex text sitting in her hands. The slow music and lack of things to bother her were optimal in helping her understand what she was reading, or at the very least not actively barring her from trying to understand. The text was still complex to her, with most sentences just a passing thought in her mind but thanks to the music that Shinme was playing she didn’t feel as frustrated with herself.
“Hm?” She was brought out of her forced focus by a question from the musician. “Oh, he wants me to learn, or at least understand a little bit of this book.” She exhaled slowly. “And it is complicated, I still can’t understand most of what’s written on it.” She gently closes the book in her hands. “But I won’t be deterred from achieving something just because it’s hard.” She sets the book aside. “But a short break would do me well rather.” She stretches her arms and yawns. “I have been at this all morning.”
She heard him call her grandfather a businessman and nearly laughed, instead she managed to stomp it down to a stoic chuckle. “If he heard you refer to him as just a businessman you would be caught in a long speech about innovation, organization, and investment.” To anyone that knew her, this was the closest she’d ever come to sounding amused. “He isn’t just a businessman, he’s the head man for Company Businesses. He gets involved with a lot of franchises and companies to have people and products in a lot of markets.” She explained to Shinme.

| It was interesting to see Katsumi forgetting herself and swaying with the music, like a snake reacting to the movements of the flutist. The imagery would have made Shinme smile if it weren’t for his dizi and the fact he couldn’t play on it while smiling. Hence his amusement had to stay hidden, but his music might have gained a little thrill, as if laughing.
Shinme was content playing and keeping her company that way, especially if it indeed helped her focus on the material. He wasn’t all that surprised; it was common knowledge that certain types of music would help with concentration, and as requested, Shinme would keep playing such tunes to make it easier for her.
Much to his delight, she did give an answer to his question, elaborating on why her grandfather wanted her to learn, and who he was anyway. When she decided on a break, he still kept playing, but answered with a little high tune, as if saying “yes, a break sounds lovely”. The exact meaning of the sound was up for interpretation though, but it didn’t fit the music currently played, so rather than being part of it, it was instead a reaction to what she said. Mentioning her grandfather specifically made him frown though, and the music quieted down, slow and unsure, as if he was ready to keep playing in case she preferred that. He was, however, starting to get a bit out of breath.
“Lucky he didn’t hear it then. He seems way too strict and boring.” He caught himself and held the flute up to his mouth as if it was a finger to shush someone with it. “Ah, no, I didn’t want to diss him, just, you know. I didn’t mean that all this innovation stuff is boring. But it sounds like constant and never-ending office work, which is way too monotone and, well, boring.“ He had no better word for it. “But if he wants you to learn, that means he wants you to work with him, right? Or at least in the same line of work. Or inherit the business?”
He tilted his head to the side, tapping his flute to his chin, contemplating. He felt there was a tiny bit of conflict not necessarily between the two persons, but rather, conflict between plans. “But you are here to learn to be a hero, aren’t you? Not to sit at a desk and make phone calls.”
