...and one nerd in a suit. KENJI COULD FEEL SOME OF his usual spit-and-vinegar seeping back into his bones as Nemuri incorrectly assumed that the teen hated being “put on the spot”. On the contrary, the little redheaded diva loved attention—and he would have announced such if Nemuri hadn’t quickly followed-up that remark with the fact that “servers were usually background characters anyways.”
“Iced, please,” Kenji said simply, “Maybe some caramel.”
Kenji relaxed, marginally, as Nemuri also assessed the doctor to be safe—or, at the very least, not quirkless. And though he tried to keep his expression neutral as the glass was adhered to the countertop, the guy’s excitement brought a smile to the teenager’s face—it was filled with impish glee.
One look at Kenji’s face would reveal that it was his work—the boy was terrible at muting his facial expressions. But he would not confirm anything vocally. When his drink was set upon the counter, his attention on the sticky-disc was broken—and therefore, the stone cup was freed once again.
“Thank you,” the teen said, retrieving his own glass, “I haven’t handled money before. No allergies.”
He took a sip of the beverage, shivering a bit as the caffeine hit his already-frayed nerves. The teen cast a sly look at the customer over the rim of his glass.
The doctor was still talking eagerly, trying to intuit what Kenji’s quirk was and when it had happened.
“While you were talking,” the boy said simply, lowering his glass, “Right before you set the glass down.”
Before the man could hope to squeeze any more details out of the youth again, Kenji raised the glass to his lips again, taking a laborious sip. The guy was brimming with questions. So the most impish thing to do would be to take one’s time drinking… right? So he couldn’t get his questions answered? Additionally, Kenji's responses left it ambiguous as to whether he was the quirk-user, or if he had simply seen the quirk-use firsthand.

so trade that typical for something colorful
and if it's crazy, then live a little crazy
Nemuri looked over the doctor failing to pick up his cup with amused bemusement, one brow raised and a slight smirk on her face. Huh. Was that what it looked like? She hadn't been sure how to imagine the Quirk described in Kenji's resume, but it certainly did as advertised. Yeah, that could totally be useful around here.
"Not I. My Quirk's less flashy, more...what's the word I'm looking for. Function over fun. Eh." With Kenji's coffee delivered she reached under the bar for her own thermos and took a long sip. While she did have unlimited access to freshly made coffee she usually had a thermos when she came in during the day, just for the commute. And for when she was feeling especially tired because, hey, some customers would probably look at her funny if she made what was pretty much a red red red red red-eye in the middle of the day. And Misuzu would scold her for drinking such swill.
Yes it tasted perfectly fine but it was not something fit for normal human consumption. Not on a daily basis.
She lowered the thermos from her lips and then held up a finger, put it back in its spot, and turned around to snatch a small glass bottle, filled with what looked like fine black sand, from off the shelf behind her. It had blended in with the variety of spices and decorative pieces on display. She set it on the counter between Kenji and Cyril.
"There's mine. It's on the menu as 'black sugar' but it's more like the something the Sandman would use. Put some of that on your eyelids and it knocks you right out. Works better if you have somebody to do it for you so you don't, like, smack yourself in the face. Or fall off the bed. I've seen some people think they could do it sitting up and then just went flop." She snickered and tapped a nail on the cork stopped that kept the bottled closed. "I do warn 'em."
"Not nearly as cool as turning things into stone, or gravity disc-light-circle-thingies. Whatever you'd call them."

It was fascinating to hear that the young boy was able to pull a fast one on the doctor. Cyril could not remember hearing anything that would of acted as a symbol that the quirk had gone off. Nor did he see any light or change in scenery as the boy activated his quirk. So was this something done with a flick of his wrist? If so then what were the draw backs? At his assumed age there was probably a size limitation. But several small things being tinkered with is much better than one large thing. Small things usually go unnoticed. Oh how numerous were the amounts of trickery one could do if he had such a quirk. Cyril could see it now. The boy could be working at a carnival, and the game would be to lift one object off of another. Simple task but with each new participate the boy could increase the difficulty by adding his adhesive to the object. Charge an amount and with some advertising he would make quite a large amount of money before anyone noticed.
Then came the idea of quirk vs quirk. How did the young doctors own petrification quirk work against the adhesive? No he could not think of these types of things right now. He had to center himself. He was an aspiring doctor, working in the rough part of Japan. He did not do experiments on children anymore, he works on the compliant in hopes of aiding them in their ailments. He researches quirks on his spare time, and that. is. all. Nothing more...
"Black sugar you say? How interesting. To imagine a touch of that and you could get a full night's sleep."
Cyril would say listening intently to the bartender explain her quirk. It was cleverly hidden amongst the coffee shop's decor which the young doctor knew could probably be used as a weapon in an emergency. As she explained further, the boy would notice that the application of the 'sand' made it hard to use on ones own, but no matter. Cyril knew he had at least one assistant working diligently so if he was going to use it for personal use she would be there to assist.
"Oh I think you are selling yourself short. This is a wonderful style of quirk. So much so, that I would like to purchase some from you. A bit silly as it sounds to my ears I admit, but it is an item on your menu."

and one nerd in a suit “Practical?” the teen supplied to his interviewer, only briefly lowering his mug before taking another sip. Now that the attention was briefly off of him, Kenji felt himself relaxing ever so slightly. The teen looked at the black, granular substance that Nemuri deposited onto the table, setting his mug down to crane closer.
Sand was her quirk?
Sugar, Nemuri insisted. Apparently it knocked your ass out if you put it on your eyes.
The redhead smiled along at the mental image of someone smacking themselves in the face or just ragdolling right out of the seat or bed they’d been occupying. Maybe the store could create a montage of people who didn’t use the sugar appropriately just accidentally smacking themselves… as a… cautionary tale. Or slapstick comedy, whichever they preferred.
“What about if you eat it?” Kenji inquired. Hey, if she called it black sugar, it implied that you were supposed to eat it. Is eyes glittered at the mention of faux pas’s of customers prior, wishing there was a montage of failed attempts at applying the black sugar independently.
Kenji lifted his mug again, stepping back to give the two adults more space to conduct their transaction. Without a conclusive bit of feedback—insistence that they’d be in touch, or extending an offer of an employment to Kenji—he couldn’t run-off quite yet. Besides, he had a drink to finish.

"Practical. Yes, that's the word. Thanks new hire," Nemuri snapped and pointed at Kenji, entirely fine with dropping her decision to hire him right out of the blue like that, because she felt like it. What, they were in the middle of a conversation, was she going to side-track it to say "oh and by the way welcome to the team"? That'd be so boring. This way she might get him to choke on his coffee or something. And that would be funny.
And as odd as the fellow was, it was nice getting praise for her Quirk. The first time somebody heard about it was always the most fun. Nemuri chuckled and pushed the bottle closer to him. "By all means, if you've got Yen I've got sand. Sugar. Whatever, it sounded better on the menu like that. That'll be a thousand and fifty for this size jar, though I've got ones a bit bigger for a thousand five hundred." Kenji's question had her attention back to him, grin only growing wickeder with it. "Well it tastes like crap, for start. Ever gotten a mouthful of sand at the beach by accident? And then it won't do anything either. Needs to get in the eyes to knock folks out, otherwise it's just sand."
"Which, I mean, normal sand is rough and coarse and can get everywhere, so that might be useful to somebody," she shrugged, "If only to bother them. It's better as a sleep aid. Which, irony of ironies, is its biggest downside for me. More I sleep the less of it I can make, so perpetual exhaustion and way too much caffeine for me, all for my quirk."
She took another sip of her red x 10 coffee and exhaled. "So. Starting salary is nine hundred and ninety an hour, I'll have Misuzuchi--that's the blonde that went that way," she thumbed toward the hall, "Whip up a contract for you. We've got your standard holidays off, ten days paid vacation after your first six months...all that good stuff. What hours were you thinking of working? We can work around your school hours, since we're open late, but if you've got a curfew or something at U.A that'd be good to know too. Oh, and the cafe itself is closed on Thursdays, just for the sake of sanity. Inn's open and we take turns between myself and Misuzuchi with who mans the desk. Anything else?"

Being given his prices Cyril seriously considered the usefulness of this item. This sand producing quirk had the ability to immediately put someone to sleep. However it was something that had to be directly applied to the victim..? Paitents…? Targets eyelids. That obviously meant that it was not meant for battle unless it could be applied by someone with an invisibility quirk. Cyril remembered reading the file of one such a child back at the orphanage. Interesting little child though her mischief got her into trouble and one thing lead to another, resulting in what the doctor at the time believed to be her "invisibility organ" jarred and set on a shelf.
Troubling but interesting days those were.
"Fantastique! Let me simply..."
He would say rummaging into his pockets for his money. After pulling out enough for 1 small order he would mention that it was that amount he needed and give the money over a wide grin on his face. This would help his research ten-fold not only on other people but also on quirks as a whole. The proprietor was kind enough to explain how her body develops the sand though kindly left out where the sand comes out of. Fingertips? Mouth? Would it not be funny if she had to collect the sand dripping from her nose each morning at dawn? Maybe there was something about the sand itself that he could dissect that could tell him exactly where from Nemuri the sand came from.
After the exchange was complete, Cyril would pretend to pat himself down as he started to clean up to leave. He was actually eavesdropping on the conversation Nemuri was having with Kenji about his time working at the cafe. Perfect. If anything Cyril would be able to come back when the child was working and perhaps he could sell him some more. At the same price of course though the frequency in which Cyril would show up might make an older worker such as Nemuri curious or even worried about the true uses of his purchases of the sand.
"With this I will take my leave then. Thank you for the wonderful drink, and this sand as well."
Cyril would say pocketing his newly purchase quirk-in-a-bottle. Patting Kenji on his head if the young child allowed him to, Cyril would walk out with the same interest in the cafe as he had before he came in. Well no, this sand did make this trip a wonderful unknown experience. If he continued down the street, what else would he run into?
[exit the thread, if he's not stopped]

and one nerd in a suit THE TEEN GAPED SLIGHTLY at the woman’s nonchalant drop of the words “new hire”. Whoa, just like that?! Unfortunately for Nemuri, Kenji was mid-raising the cup to his lips, so there was no spit-take or sputtering to be had. Just a pause as the realization dawned-on him.
Kenji managed to take another swig of his coffee, trying hard to play it cool and failing fantastically. He was grinning like an idiot, even while he was working-on his beverage. Her quirk explanation, although Kenji weathered it like a person who was listening, went in one ear and out the other, because again, too excited to listen. But when matters returned to his job, the boy began listening in earnest.
“Evenings or weekends are better,” Kenji confirmed, bobbing his head, “I know there’s a curfew, but I think you’re allowed to break it if you’ve got a job… I’ll double-check on that.”
Play it cool, Kenji, play it cool.
The redhead didn’t know if there was anything else, to be honest.
“W-when should I be in-touch?” Kenji asked. Or would Misuzuchi be in-touch with him first? This was his first job, so he didn’t know who was supposed to contact who first…
“And, uh, thank you! Very much!” Kenji remembered, bowing faintly, “I appreciate the opportunity.”
That was memories of Mosa’s warning to mind his manners simmering to the forefront of his mind. He’d finished the drink, so set the cup upon the counter. The customer tried to pat Kenji’s head, which earned a sort of leeeeeean out of reach and a confused squint—like, hey man, don’t touch me.
“Thank you!” Kenji said to Nemuri, once again. Then he, too, would take his leave.
