440 words It started with a text.
The prawn’s phone buzzed softly on the window sill, snagging her attention from the book that was propped open between thumb and forefinger. It was some trashy mystery novel, in English of course, about some woman who lost her job selling lingerie and became a bounty hunter. For as stupid as it was, Charlotte thoroughly enjoyed the humor of it. She lifted her phone from the sill, splaying the book out on her chest as she surveyed the device. In the notifications, it read:
1 Message: Theo
Huh. Wonder what he’s up to. The prawn swiped the screen, inputting her pin to unlock the phone. She pulled down the menu, selected the message, and read.
Did you know today is Greenery Day in Japan?
Huh. The prawn typed a ponderous but honest response.
I did not know that.
He was typing… he was typing…
Yeah. It’s a day to honor nature! So people like to go out and enjoy nature on this day.
So, like Earth Day. Charlotte hummed to herself, typing back hastily.
Cool.
More typing. Okay, something was up.
Yeah. So. Do you want to go hiking later-on?
Ah, there it was. Charlotte looked at the splayed book on her chest. Did she really have any other plans? No, not really. Read, maybe go to the workshop, take a nap under the three.
Sure. What time?
So the plan was set. And, later in the morning, Charlotte was found bobbing on her feet at the school gate. She wasn’t sure what to expect, as she had never really been hiking before. She’d texted Hye, first, as the brunette was really Charlie’s only confidante on this matter. Water was an absolute must. And then the topic of lunch came up. What were they doing? Charlotte didn’t know.
Charlie-chan!!! You should make lunch. I’ll help you!!!
So, Charlotte stood with a small backpack upon her back-- one that looked fine on an average person, but looked laughably strained on the prawn’s back. Within, a massive water bottle, and two small bento’s-- one for her, and one for Theo. Her outfit was nothing out of the normal-- tank top, cargo shorts, black surgical mask. Though, given her recent molt, there was a certain vibrance to her shell.
She stood by the gate, periodically peeking at her phone for an update, a raincheck, literally anything. Though the unfamiliar observer might argue that she was “patiently waiting”, those who knew her would see the tells here-and-there of nerves. Why was she nervous? Well, if anyone asked, the prawn might dismissively reply, “Well, I haven’t ever been hiking before."

Theodore was ecstatic to find out Charlotte was willing to go for a hike with him- meaning they’d get to spend time outside, enjoying the beauty of nature: just the two of them. He couldn’t help but blush at the thought, though he quickly gathered himself and prepared for the trip. When he arrived at the gate, Charlotte would find him with a large backpack about half the size of himself, wearing cargo pants, black boots, and a long sleeve t-shirt. Even though it was spring, he wanted to make sure he was warm for if they went too far up the mountain. Upon seeing the familiar face of the world’s most precious and adorable shrimp, he’d crack a wide smile, waving to her. ”Oi, Charlotte!” he called out, lightly jogging over to her, ”Looks like you made it alright. Your new coat is lovely, by the way” he said, somehow managing to keep his face from flushing red as he complimented her post-molt appearance.
Even though he’d mostly organized the trip as a way to spend more time with his friend, Theodore really did want to hike up the range. He’d heard the view from higher up was beautiful, and a day consisting of exercise out in mother nature seemed pretty fun. Greenery Day was simply the perfect excuse to bring the reality of the venture to fruition. ”I’ve got blankets, a tent- in case we decide to stay the night- several canisters of water, some jerky, and a couple of other tools and essentials” he explained, grabbing his large pack by the straps and propping it up for a moment, as if to emphasize the point. ”You got everything you need?”
Upon confirmation from Charlotte that they were good to go, the burly Brit would head out towards the range, prawn in tow. Once they finally arrived, he notice that because of the holiday, there were several other families, groups of friends, and even couples along the range- so he tried to pick a trail that was less crowded, at the expense of it being a more intensive climb. ”This way seems like it’ll be less trouble” he explained, hoping not to reveal his motivation to spend some quality time with just the two of them. He’d start up the road, making sure that Charlotte was able to keep pace as they went. Cherry blossom trees aligned the sides of the trail, a canopy of leaves hanging over them.

669 words ft. theodore grundlewood The sight of Theodore made Char feel horribly under-prepared. That was the only word for it. He had the look of an outdoorsman, with a massive pack and ankle-high boots. She was in good physical shape, but... maybe she was getting in over her head? Theodore's bright smile helped dispel that fear though, and Charlotte smiled back, waving back to him. There was something just so... alive... about Theo. She couldn't think of another way to put it.
"My new coat?" the prawn echoed. She didn't... have... a coat. It took her a moment to realize that he meant her shell, and when she realized this, she gave a light, "Oh, thanks!"
Theodore charged through a list of things he had, going so far as to explain that he had a tent and blankets. Waaait, were they camping? She hadn't packed any spare clothes or blankets or anything like that... maybe she'd misunderstood the invitation.
A newfound apprehension roiled in the prawn, but she nodded, despite this, and declared, "I have water and lunches."
Small talk was exchanged between them as they awaited a bus just off-campus. Talk of the new academic year, of plans and classes and friends. It would fade periodically, and pick back up again without really fading. Quiet English nothings murmured at the back of the bus. Words were easy with Theodore. Time passed quickly.
It felt like the blink of an eye before their bus reached the lush green mountains, and the two students disembarked. It was busy... bustling with hikers and children of various skill sets with the same intention as the duo. Charlie stuck close behind Theodore, following him to a steeper, more overgrown looking path. But it seemed quieter. That was a plus.
At the boy's observation, the prawn nodded, heaving a sigh. Less people was better. The two began to walk, Charlotte maintaining her place just behind Theo. The trail was a narrow, dirt thing-- nothing compared to the crushed granite walkway that the majority of the other hikers had elected. Crazy, how quickly the clamor of it all faded away behind them once they slipped through the trees...
It almost felt irreverent to speak. So, she didn't. She turned her eyes to the canopy, the thick green foliage mixed with, of all things, cherry trees. The sun was just right, and wind surged like rushing water through the branches. Charlie sighed. It was peaceful. In her reverent communion with the wilds, she didn't notice Theodore waiting for her until she was almost on top of him. A chuckle.
"I spaced-out," was her apologetic excuse, "They don't... have places like this, in the city." She had turned her eyes towards the surrounding area and fallen quiet, "Sorry." The two began walking again. It was only a few moments before Charlie began to speak again.
"Even though... San Francisco... is all hills, with gorgeous parks... Oakland is flat and ugly. At least til you get to the hills... but only rich people... go into the hills..." You needed cars to navigate the narrow roads. Buses couldn't handle the hairpin turns. It was a sort of gentrification built into the very fabric of the city's layout.
"But there was... this creek, just down the hill from my mentor's apartment... it was kinda wild, like this. I liked to walk along it and pretend I was exploring uncharted territory."
Of course it was choked with litter of various types and frequented by the homeless population, but still... it was a fissure of nature that had burst through the seams of the urban sprawl.
"Kinda reminds me if this place. You know. A peaceful place."
Words were easy, with Theodore. They came upon a felled tree that had never been cleared. With a little struggle, Charlie cleared it by swinging a leg over. Ever cognizant of her shorter companion, she turned and extended her hands, if he needed something to grab-on to or steady himself with.
"Do you have places like that, back home?"

Although Theodore was probably overprepared, he was happy to have brought the vast quantity of supplies he had once he learned that Charlotte only brought some water and lunch for the two of them. Although that was probably all they’d need, if there were any complications then things might not have gone so smoothly- especially since he doubted they’d have good cell reception further up the trail. Words weren’t exactly easy for Theodore when he was around Charlotte, but they were definitely pleasant. Everything from their deep heart to heart talk the other day, to even simple small talk, felt like it had some sort of meaning. He’d learned how to hold and direct a conversation from his social encounters, but more often or not it was only a means to an end. With his shelled friend, it was the journey of their exchanges that gave him joy, rather than the results. He could talk aimlessly for hours with the girl if he was given the chance.
There was a solid thirty seconds or so where Theodore was going on about the lovely weather and the spectacular view before he turned around, realizing that Charlotte had gone quiet. Eventually she’d speak up, explaining that she’d spaced out and how she wasn’t used to such sights where she was from. ”Heh, same. I’m from a suburban town myself, and you’ve gotta go all the way up to Scotland back home to see any mountains, so this is all new for me too. I’ve gotta say, I think this trip was well worth it” he responded, his eyes, drifting out towards the horizon. By now they were a good ways up the trail, acres of greenery below a bright blue sky. The view wasn’t the only beautiful sight here though- his eyes drifting towards his hiking companion. Sure many might not consider Charlotte traditionally beautiful, but to Theodore he thought she was one of the prettiest girls he’d ever met. It was the subtle things that people might not see in her everyday life that really pulled at his heartstrings: the way her eyes moved when she smiled- the way she glowed sometimes at night- and the way she spoke or held herself. Despite her size and the alterations her quirk adorned her with, Charlotte was a kind and gentle lady- someone that made his heart beat faster just by getting too close to. Of course, he’d had terrible experiences with dating before- and the last thing he wanted to do was get people prying into Charlotte’s business or causing her issues if they were to go out. Besides- he doubted she liked him that way anyhow. They were just friends, and that was something he needed to accept. She liked Saito, after all.
He stopped zoning out when she began to speak once more- talking about her home. Come to think of it, he hadn’t heard much about where she was from before- and he found himself listening closely to what she had to share. Apparently her hometown wasn’t entirely devoid of nature. She mentioned a specific creek in particular that she used to wander around with her mentor- a name he’d heard the prawn mention on several occasions before. ”That sounds nice” he commented- though his words held more weight than a simple off-handed response, showing he had a genuine interest in what she had to say. ”Me? Not really...sometimes we’d go out into the countryside to fish, but there was never really a place I could go everyday. It was mostly concrete and bricks where I’m from” he responded, shrugging his shoulders.
Before they continued marching further up the trail, Charlotte would offer a hand to help him over a fallen log. "Thanks love" he said, turning slightly red as he grabbed her hand and was helped over the obstacle. As they moved forward, he took the time to try and prod a little deeper about this mentor of hers. ”Hey, you’ve mentioned this mentor of yours before. Who were they, and what were they like? What exactly did they teach you?” he asked.

631 words ft. theodore grundlewood
The prawn hummed as Theodore spoke, with a humored, “You fish?” He really was an outdoorsman, despite his insistence that he lived in the suburbs. Perhaps there were wild places near his home, Theodore had just never wandered there. Did any decent parents let their children wander as much as Charlotte had? She was jarred from that line of thought when Theo clasped her hand. Warm. She was reluctant to let go of him… but she did, after a pause, with a smile. His face was pink. It was funny how pink people could get. Cute, even.
When they began walking again, she walked alongside him, shortening her stride to keep pace with him.
Theodore took the lead once again, and the question he uttered made the prawn stumble a bit. Her mentor? Of course Theodore would be curious about him. Charlotte talked about him obliquely, and often. Not Mom, not Dad, but her mentor. Would he think less of her, if she told him? She'd kept it under wraps for months, now, at U.A. She'd maintained a relatively unblemished reputation… could she trust Theo to keep it to himself?
“He was… the leader of a gang,” Charlotte finally confessed, breathing a sigh. Her lavender eyes flicked towards her brunette companion, gauging his reaction before she continued. “I didn't know until later, after he died.” After he was killed by an American pro-hero, rather. While Charlotte was in the neighboring room. He didn't need to know that.
The birdsong in the trees almost felt contrary to the settling mood. There was so much wrapped into that relationship-- how she'd fled her parents and never been pursued. Bounced around the system after his passing. She tried not to think about it. That's what made it easier to live with. But Theo had questions. And Charlotte wanted to answer. Even if she didn't know how to.
“That's the crazy thing about bad people… is that they aren't all bad, all the time,” Charlotte murmured, “He took me in and raised me. Took me to church. Loved me like his own. He was a funny guy, but he also had really high expectations of me, in like… school and life and stuff,” she smiled faintly, “But then… he also taught me how to survive in the hood.” She'd let Theo imagine what that meant.
The missing piece was, of course, where her parents were amidst all of this. What half-decent parents let their daughter fall-in with a gang? It was the logical follow-up question. But that was such a big, unspeakable part of her life, that the prawn went quiet for a moment. Absentmindedly, the prawn slid her hand into his again… though if Theo asked, it was because of an impending surging creek that they'd need to cross by felled log, which the two could see and hear quite clearly… and not because Charlotte wanted to be comforted. She wanted to know that Theodore was still there, and wouldn't rebuke her for her circumstances.
“I found him after I escaped my birth-parents,” she murmured, “They… I… wasn't allowed to leave the house. They brought people in to… civilize me.” The words, not hers, which was clear in the way the word “civilize” creaked out of her mouth “-And one day I hid in the trunk of my speech therapist's car. Because she was kind to me, and I thought i'd be happier with her. But then I lost her, and my mentor found me… and I tried to never look back.”
She squeezed Theo’s hand lightly, perhaps a little desperately. There was a trace of sadness in her eyes.
“Please don't tell anyone. The last thing I want is for a school of aspiring heroes to think I’m a villain waiting to happen.”

Theodore was surprised to hear that the mentor of the gentle and kind Charlotte Fujioka was none other than an American gangster- and that apparently she wasn’t even aware until after he’d passed away. Wait...did that mean some tough gang dude taught her how to braid hair? That was something to ask about another time, when the mood was less tense. ”I’m sorry” was all he said after the mention of his death, unsure how else to comfort his friend. Death was a hell of a thing, and Theodore wasn’t sure how to confront it- much less in the case of someone he’d never even met. A sorry wasn’t enough to fix anything, but it’s all he had. Despite the grim tone of their conversation, the setting around them was bright and filled with the sounds of life- which almost made the whole situation feel...surreal- like something out of Alex in Wonderworld.
”He doesn’t sound bad to me” Theodore responded after her initial explanation, ”I’m sorry if this sounds pretentious of me to say. I never met the man myself, and I wasn’t there when you were growing up, but I don’t think you’d be the kind and gentle woman you are today if you’d been raised by a bad person. In fact, he must’ve been a real softie if he even taught you how to braid hair so you could make friends” the burly Brit said, chuckling softly. ”I don’t know much about the hood or what surviving in it entails, if I’m being honest. If you’re willing to share though, I’d be happy to lend an ear.”
When Charlotte grabbed his hand, Theodore was surprised- though he could tell this wasn’t the time to get embarrassed or flustered. This moment wasn’t about his crush on Charlotte- it was about comforting a friend. He’d interlace his fingers with her own and offer a reassuring squeeze in return, keeping it there for as long as she wanted. The story only got darker from there as she recounted how she fled from her birth parents and ended up in the trunk of her speech therapist’s car before encountering the man she called her mentor. It was… a lot to take in. Hearing her story made the boy feel guilty. He’d grown up with loving parents who’d done everything they could to take care of him. Sure they were a little strict at times and taught him to hide his quirk, but his mother and father were good people that he loved with all his heart. To think that Charlotte felt the need to run from her own family, and that the guardian she’d grown up with was dead...it felt for a moment as if they were worlds apart. As the guilt began to pile up, he felt the prawn squeeze his hand- snapping him back to reality. He’d offer another squeeze in return, realizing that while he may have had an easier life than Charlotte, he could still be here for her now.
”Don’t worry, your secrets are safe with me. And umm...Charlotte?” he called, his eyes looking down towards the ground now, ”I’m glad you’re here with us at UA. You’re a great friend and a wonderful person, and I know that one day you’ll help a lot of people. I promise I’d never do anything to make things difficult for you at school. In fact, I consider you a close friend, and want you to know that if you ever need anything, then you should ask me. Okay?” he said, meeting her eyes once more as he finished speaking.

293 words ft. theodore grundlewood Charlotte shrugged at the apology, closing her eyes as she spoke, "It is what it is."
She never understood the practice of apologizing for something one didn't personally cause. Charlotte smiled faintly as Theodore responded. Huh, he remembered that story? He must have gotten some wires crossed along the way, though, for he mis-remembered who'd taught her to braid hair.
"His girlfriend taught me to braid hair," she laughed, "Though he did let me braid his hair periodically. I'm surprised you remembered."
His hand was smaller than hers, but somehow... they made it work, even with her massive, three-fingered hand. It felt nice...
And, when Theodore squeezed her hand, it prompted a surge of heat to rise to her face. He wasn't going anywhere. And that... well, that reassured her. It made her realize that... well, he was a really important friend. And she didn't want to lose that. Theodore swore to keep her secret safe-- not only that, but he piled affirmation after affirmation onto the prawn, lauding her as a great, wonderful person with a bright future. And if she ever needed anything, to talk to him.
Charlotte laughed, faintly, and her hand slipped from Theo's. But only because she wanted to ruffle his hair. There was something affectionate in the gesture, almost like a caress. Maybe her hand lingered too long. She let it fall, timidly returning her attention to the trail ahead.
"I appreciate it, Theo," she murmured, "I really do."
There was a tightness in her voice, the kind of strain that accompanied barely restrained emotion. People didn't say stuff like that, to her. Or very rarely, they did. She wasn't sure how to answer it. Thank him? Return a compliment? Deflect it?
She elected to thank him.

”Right, it was his girlfriend. My bad” he apologized with a lighthearted chuckle, feeling a little embarrassed at his slip up. Charlotte may look abnormal, but her hand felt warm and soft to the touch- just like any other person’s. The logistics were a bit strange- two of his fingers between each gap of her claws, with his thumb at the end- but they made it work. Eventually though, she’d remove herself from his grasp, instead ruffling the hand through his hair as she thanked him. ”Any time, Charlotte” he said in response, his tone quiet and calmer now. They crossed the quick in relative silence, which was broken shortly after by the sound of his stomach grumbling. ”Sorry about that, love. I’m a bit peckish- mind if we stop to have those lunches of yours?” he asked.
Once she gave him the go ahead, he’d look around until he spotted a clearing nearby- a flat, circular area covered with grass and surrounded by a ring of trees- almost like something out of a storybook. ”This spot looks promising!” he called out, ushering for Charlotte to come over. He’d set his hefty pack down with a thud rummaging through it for the water and snacks he’d brought himself- giving Charlotte time to set out her premade lunches. If she didn’t have a picnic blanket with her, he’d lay out the one he brought to sleep in. ”You like jerky by the way?” he asked as they sat down, grabbing one of the prepackaged pieces of meat, ”These are jalapeno cheddar flavor- they’re delicious. Here, try one” he insisted, offering her the pack.

672 words ft. theodore grundlewood A fantastic yowl cut through the air, snagging the prawn's attention. For a second, she found herself wondering what kinds of wildlife were native to these hills-- and her eyes fell upon Theodore. He wore an apologetic smile, bashfully announcing that he was "peckish", whatever that meant... and inquired as to lunch. Oh, he was hungry.
"And here I thought you'd smuggled a cat in your backpack," Charlotte said drolly, the look in her eyes smug. She was teasing, of course, and gave a quick nod and quiet, "I'm fine with that."
The two trekked onward, scoping-out a place where they could hunker down and eat. The trail was narrow and unevern, so they couldn't really sit down where they were, lest anyone walk by on the treacherous path. Surprisingly, they hadn't seen... much of anyone, yet.
The two came upon a spot of grass, surrounded on all sides by massive trees. Charlotte sighed, releasing a breath she hadn't been aware of holding. In his melodious British tones, Theodore declared this place suitable for lunch. And Charlotte, a little winded from such a demanding walk, couldn't agree more. After some wriggling, she was able to shrug-off her own backpack, and pad the rest of the way to where Theodore was settling.
She had no picnic blanket (was that an expectation for picnics?) so Theodore laid-out one of his own, with some help from the prawn. Charlotte then sat gingerly upon the blanket, crossing her legs. She sat towards one corner, with her rump partially on the grass itself, because she didn't want to take-up too much space.
The backpack was unzippered, and two bentos, a thermos of tea, and a water bottle were removed. Charlotte accepted the pack of jerky, but set it in front of her.
"The bento's were Hye-Rin's idea," Charlotte said lightly, "I've never gone on a hike before. And when I told her I was going on a hike with you, she said I should make lunches." Operative words being "with you". He could thank Hye-Rin later.
"Just... wanted to give a disclaimer... before you started to think I have any... cooking skill at all," the prawn said, between her struggle with prying the lids off of the bento boxes. They'd been covered while still warm, which meant that the lids were suctioned on. When Charlotte finally managed to open the container, she revealed a sundry of foods within the bento... broccoli, tamagoyaki, karaage, and a spinach-and-corn saute on one side of the divided lunch box... and two, smiling onigiri on the other. It was stupidly cute, even by Charlotte's standards. And, for whatever reason, this embarrassed the prawn.
"I, uh, also have utensils."
She rummaged into the bag and procured to sets of chopsticks, forks, knives, and spoons, each set separated by a sanitary plastic container.
"I hope this is okay."
She couldn't watch Theodore as he surveyed the food, so she busied herself with other things. Absentmindedly, the prawn removed her mask by hooking one finger through the elastic. A gust of air tickled at the flesh beneath her maxillipeds. It was so easy to forget how hot surgical masks were, until you removed it. The surgical mask was wedged deep into her backpack. For a few moments, Charlotte sat focused on the unopened package of jerky, trying artlessly to pry it open with her hands... and to no avail.
Frustration peaking, she bit the top of the bag with her two, outermost maxillipeds and tore the plastic free of the Ziploc closure. She only realized what she'd done once she'd procured a piece of jerky from the bag... and she paused to look at Theo, peering sidelong at him.
"I, uh..." she began hesitantly. Why was she so hyper-aware of how her mouth moved when she talked? The clack of her mandibles, the slight flex of her maxillipeds with each vowel, "Um... is this weird? I can get the, uh... eating mask... if it's weird."
Even in the company of a friend, Charlotte was ever-modest.

After the two laid everything out, Charlotte would situate herself on one corner of the blanket. On one hand, Theodore didn’t want to come off as weird, but on another… he wanted to make some progress. Despite the large area of the blanket, he plopped himself down right next to Charlotte- only inches away from her as he arranged himself in a criss cross applesauce position. Although the burly Brit had packed heavily for the occasion, he hadn’t exactly brought any solid meals, just some water and what were essentially just rations and snacks. The precious prawn was more prepared however, bringing out two lunch boxes- which she explained that Hye-Rin suggested and helped her make. At the mention of her saying she was going on a hike with him, he couldn’t help but look away in embarrassment, wondering if Hye would catch on to his little crush or not. ”I-I see. Thanks, love” he’d say, steeling himself before turning back to face her. To his relief, she had been busy trying to pry the lids open- meaning she might’ve missed his awkwardness.\
The boy would chuckle at her comment about not wanting him to think she was great at cooking, waving his hand in the air dismissively: ”I understand. Still, thank you- and thank Hye-Rin too. This’ll be much more filling than jerky and dry crackers.” She’d pull out several packages of utensils, passing them to Theodore. Since Charlotte grew up in America, he didn’t have to worry about trying to look prim and proper- immediately setting the chopsticks aside and opening up the package with the fork in it. He’d set to the meal straight away, taking a couple of bites before stopping full on- his eyes widening: ”This is...amazing!” he said, shoveling a few more forkfuls into his mouth before stopping himself to focus on Charlotte.
To his surprise, she’d torn off the eating mask- a great show of progress since they’d met at the ice cream shop with Jun before. Taking a moment, he’d swallow his food before responding, a smile on his face: ”It’s not weird at all, Char. In fact...I think you look a lot better without the mask” he said, turning slightly red. He usually wasn’t so forward, but his last few outings with Charlotte had been spectacular- and with the great food, weather, and environment surrounding them, he was in a particularly stellar mood. Deciding to try and be even bolder, he’d scooch his bottom closer to char, until his arm was just barely brushing against hers- though he’d try and play it off, with little success, as though it were just a coincidence.
”I haven’t been on a picnic since I was a little kid. My family and I used to visit the countryside every so often, and we’d all eat outside together like this. It’s my first time doing something like this with a friend though” and a girl at that. After taking another large bite of tamagoyaki, he’d halt his eating to speak up again: ”I’m glad you came out here with me. I don’t think I’d have nearly this much fun by myself. Heck, I don’t even think I’d be able to have this much fun with Eli or Jack. Whenever you and I hang out it just...feels different. It’s a nice change of pace.”

606 words ft. theodore grundlewood
The prawn had gone noticeably quiet, as Theodore drew closer to her. How could she not notice? There was a whole goddamn blanket, and he was right there beside her. Even when she was trying not to look at him, he was in her peripheral vision. His leg was practically touching hers. She resealed the jerky, her eyes downcast, as Theodore thanked her for the meal.
"N-o problem," she mumbled. It hardly felt fair to say thank you when Hye-chan had admittedly done a majority of the work. She took a bite of the jerky, severing a piece with her outer maxilipeds. Beyond the two, massive appendages, the inner-workings of lesser maxillipeds and mandibles were all but a mystery, save the quiet crunching from the prawn.
"It's... spicy..." the prawn observed, and air of surprise in her tone. She'd never had jerky before, much less jerky with jalapeno's and cheddar. But it would be rude to let the food go to waste, though. She set it on her leg, promimsing herself that she'd countinue eating it "later", and began to grapple with the lid of the bento box. Again, Theo thanked her, lauding the meal as delicious. This earned a faint, humored chuckle from the prawn. Why were these lids so... freaking... difficult?
>> "Its not weird at all, Char. In fact... I think you look a lot better without the mask."
Her hand slipped, and Charlotte cast a startled look his way. All she could do was nervously smile at that-- but then she remembered that her mouth was in the open, and that smiling would flash mouthparts, and she covered her mouth with her hand. By some strike of fortune, she managed to pry the lid off of the bento one-handed. She then let her hand fall, only after the smile was more subdued.
"I, uh," she began. His arm, tanned from days outside with the Sports Club, was practically radiating warmth through the thick shell of her arm. She couldn't focus, "I think the mask gives me an air... of intrigue."
That's how she tried to play it off, anyways. She totally didn't wear the mask because she was self-conscious, no way. She barely heard half of what Theodore said, her brain such a hum of thoughts. She absently lifted the bento, holding a fork aloft above the container, and stabbed quietly at the food, trying not to move too much or accidentally brush against Theodore. The last thing she needed was to accidentally scratch him with the arm-spikes near her elbow. Honesty, she should file those down, but it was so tedious to do so. Through bites of food, he talked about going on picnics with family, though never with a friend.
"That sounds peaceful," the prawn remarked. It really did, too. It sounded like a happy memory. Theodore went-on to say how happy he was to have Char with him, rather than Eli and Jack. Through a mouthful of food, Charlotte muffled a chuckle, raising the fork-wielding hand to her mouth.
"Heh, well... I mean... Jack is pretty... high-energy," she said gently. Which is to say, maybe hanging-out with Charlotte was different because she wasn't as high-strung? She held her fork-wielding hand to her mouth, to ensure that she didn't accidentally spit food while speaking. As she said this, Charlotte let her knee bump against his, a slow sort of motion. Just to see what he'd do. It was idle enough that he might not even notice...
"Do you... want any tea?" she offered, nodding to the thermos. She took another forkful of food. She couldn't even bring herself to look up.

Theodore was surprised to see Charlotte’s bewildered expression at his statement- flashing a smile for the briefest of moments before covering it with one hand whilst using the other to try and get the lunch box open. It wasn’t long enough for him to get a solid look, but even with all the strange mouth parts involved, the boy’s hypothesis had been proven correct: that Charlotte looked her best when she was smiling. Eventually she’d let the hand fall, revealing a more gathered and put together expression, as she explained how the mouthpiece gave her an air of ‘intrigue’. Honestly, Theodore had thought it was just because she was shy about her appearance, but being as naive and trusting as he was, he took the prawn’s words at face value. ”Intrigue, huh? I suppose if that’s what you prefer” he said, the color draining from his face as he came back to his senses, realizing that Charlotte either didn’t notice or didn’t accept his advances.
Even as his friend ate, he felt as though she was taking extra caution to scrunch herself up, as if she was trying to avoid touching him altogether. That was definitely worrying- the last thing he wanted to do was make his friend uncomfortable. He’d heard about how she was pretty physical and cuddly with Jack, so if she were so conscious of him...maybe she just didn’t like him very much. It was disheartening, but Theodore would do his best to keep up a smile and not let the outing get ruined over it. ”Yeah, it was relaxing. When the sun was setting and everything grew quiet, even my noisy little brother would sit down and keep his mouth shut. Oh, and don’t get me started on the stars. I grew up in a suburban area, and UA is pretty urban, so I almost never get to see them. I’m hoping we get a chance to see a starry night sky before we head back for the night. Here’s hoping, huh?” he asked rhetorically with a chuckle, his mood easing up as he thought about the opportunity.
Speak of the devil, Charlotte brought up Jack not long after Theodore had been thinking about his intimacy with the prawn, explaining how he was pretty high-energy. ”Heh, that’s an understatement” he chortled, gesturing his hand loosely in the air with his palm facing upward, ”I love the guy, but he’s a real piece of work sometimes. You don’t know how many times I’ve tried to cover for him in UA chat” or how he had to bring the counselor to Jack since he was being stubborn- or how he had to comfort him over both Hye and Melody- among other things. ”Things with you though feel like they aren’t urgent, or that they don’t have to be rushed. Jack is one thing, but it’s even a more relaxed feeling than when I’m with Jun or Eli. I just...don’t know how to explain it” he continued, scratching the back of his head and flashing an awkward smile. As he did though, he felt her knee bump against his own. Maybe it was just an accident- it was a very minute motion that could've easily been done without thinking- but nevertheless, a warmer smile would spread on his face. Maybe there was still hope after all?
Before the awkward moment could linger for too long, she’d offer him some tea- to which the burly Brit would nod. ”That sounds nice- thanks” he answered, waiting to be poured and handed a cup before taking a long sip. They’d continue to talk for hours on end- though it didn’t feel anywhere near that long. At one point or another, Theodore would finally turn his gaze skyward- realizing that it was far darker out than he thought. ”Wait...what time is it?” he asked in a panicked tone, turning to face Charlotte.

668 words ft. theodore grundlewood The prawn had gone quiet, in her embarrassment. Though she was not privy to the inner-workings of the boy's mind, her train of thought traveled on similar tracks. With Jack, things were so much clearer. He was always (very loudly) demanding cuddles, asking to sit close to one another and the likes... but he was also very explicit about the fact that they were just friends. And, for someone as dense as Charlotte, such clear communication and definitive boundaries were what worked. But Theodore... Theodore was different. She wasn't sure how to interpret his arm near her arm, or sitting practically flush with her. It wasn't explicit, and she didn't want to interpret it wrong. That was why she sat so still beside him. Accidental contact could incur violent reactions, and the last thing she wanted was to be spurned like that.
She seemed to relax, however, as the boy spoke of the quiet and the stars back home.
"I lived in the city," she murmured wistfully, "I've never seen many stars."
Or really, any stars. The Bay was so often swallowed-up by fog at nights, it was a wonder that the prawn even knew what the moon was. And then, when Charlotte got brave enough to let her knee rest against his, and he didn't pull away... Charlotte's heart stuttered. Theo's awkward smile became brilliant. And he didn't wince, or sound disgusted. Charlotte dropped her gaze towards the bento box, quietly skewering more of the packed lunch on her fork. A close observer would notice the smile that she wore, however small. Maybe... maybe things would be okay.
She would laugh about Theo's remark about Jack, nodding vigorously in agreement, "I'm always dropping into his dm's, telling him not to say anything stupid!" It was good to know that she wasn't alone in those efforts. Theodore went-on to explain that things were different with Charlie... even different from his interactions with Jun and Eli... Her smile remained.
"Thanks," she clicked. As their conversation stretched, and bento boxes steadily emptied, Charlotte would ease marginally closer to Theodore. She'd prop herself up on one arm, so that her body was partially turned towards him. and throughout the hours that slipped relentlessly by, she never once grabbed for her mask. It was as she'd believed before... words were just... easier with Theo.
They were so wrapped-up in each other's company, Charlotte didn't even have an inkling that time might have been slipping by until Theo's head jerked upwards, and he hastily demanded as to the time. Char looked up, too. It didn't look any different to her. But it had already been established that she saw better in low-light and no-light than the average person.
"I'll check," she murmured, reaching for her backpack. She dug into the bag, procuring her cell phone. The screen was powered-on with the click of a button, and the prawn simply... stared. She then flashed the screen towards Theo, looking to him for answers.
It was past seven o' clock. The last bus had left almost an hour prior, and the next wouldn't be there until morning.
"We messed up," Charlotte murmured, surveying her screen once again, "We don't even have service."
So they had no ride, and couldn't call for a ride, either.
"Maybe... if we run down to the main lot... we can bum a ride off of someone?" even Charlotte knew that was a stretch. The park closed at sunset, and the sun was already setting. And here they were, off some beaten trail where not a single sould had ventured past them, in all this time of them sitting and talking together. Was this even a trail?!
"Oh, Theo, we fucked up," Charlotte murmured softly, without waiting for an answer, dropping her phone on her bag, "What'll we do? We're gonna get in so much trouble..." A massive, anxious hand attempted to smooth back the prawn's antennae, but it only made her more jittery. How did they mess up so badly?

It felt like nothing could go wrong right now. As her knee touched his, she responded to his smile with one of her own. As their conversation went on, Charlotte even turned her body towards him, something that made the boy’s heart begin to race. They talked for hours- though Theodore had felt like only minutes had passed. When he looked upwards and was finally brought back to reality, he quickly asked his friend for the time- only to find out that they’d missed the bus by a long shot. His heart would continue to beat fast- though this time out of panic for their situation rather than the fact that he was so close to his crush. The shrimp suggested they could hurry down to the main lot and ask for a ride from someone, but the burly Brit simply shook his head: ”If it’s that late already, then there’s not a chance. We’re stuck here until morning- unless we walk the whole way home. But that’s…” not really possible either.
His gaze would focus on her as she worriedly ran a hand over her antennae. Gulping, Theodore would place a hand on the blanket to stand himself up, towering over the still seated prawn for a moment as he gently placed a hand on her head. ”Don’t worry, I came prepared for this. We’re going to be fine” he said, doing his best to put on a confident demeanor to reassure her. He’d offer a large, toothy smile to her- despite his own nervousness- in the hopes that it would help calm her down. As he did so, he’d begin to take the camping supplies he’d brought with him out of his enormous pack: a large tent canvas and a series of folded up, metal poles. Along with these came a large paper pamphlet with instructions on how to put it together. Laying that on the ground, he’d pull out a large, military grade flashlight and hand it to Charlotte. ”Can you shine this over the pamphlet and read the instructions to me?”
He’d follow his friend's instructions, the whole process taking somewhere between thirty to sixty minutes before the tent was up and functional- a surprisingly large shelter that could easily fit the two of them if they wanted. Wiping at his brow with the sleeve of his shirt, Theodore would turn to Charlotte and give her a thumbs up: ”Should be good to go!” he said before moving towards the blanket they’d eaten on, carefully moving the boxes and utensils onto the grass before holding it up and flapping it around in the wind to shake any crumbs off. He’d then toss it inside the tent, as well as another rolled up blanket that was inside the pack.
”We’re set up for the night- though it’s not that late yet” he said with an awkward chuckle, moving towards Charlotte. ”On the bright side, at least we can get a good look at the stars, right?” he asked, accompanied by a hearty laugh at the sheer ridiculousness of their predicament.

#### words @tag The prawn could feel her pulse quickening, mostly out of fear for the repercussions of breaking curfew. She'd been trying so hard to do right by this school. Whereas in California her attitude was indifferent at best, in Japan she was actually trying. And now she was messing up… the anxiousness that crept into her body language was a rare sight for the usually staid prawn.
The nerves were dispelled by the boy's light touch on the crown of her head. She couldn't feel the touch through the thick armor of her skull. But she saw him move in her periphery, and lifted her gaze to follow the motion.
He was touching her head…
Warm, sky blue lights began to twinkle up the prawn's arms and across her cheek, barely visible in the fading light.
“Okay…”
She'd trust him.
Even if her heart was now hammering for an entirely different reason. Charlie wrote it off as embarrassment. She watched him unpack the tent, removing fabric and poles. She only unfolded herself from the blanket, at the boy's direction, and accepted the paper pamphlet. She surveyed the instructions, which were thankfully written in English. Charlie was also handed a flashlight-- which she surveyed briefly before tucking it under her arm, without switching it on.
She'd read the prompts with a rather monotonous tone of voice. Despite fluency in English, Charlotte was not the best at reading aloud. But Theodore managed to assemble the tent despite this. The prawn, unable to be an entirely passive participant, assembled a few poles in the meantime.
Finally, their shelter for the night was assembled and staked into the ground. Their shelter for the night. The lights that had dimmed on her arms brightened again. It wasn't like that time that she'd dozed-off on the couch with Jisa-kun. The couch was public and unintentional. But here… it was just Theodore and Charlotte. All alone. Why did that make her so nervous? Theo was a nice boy. There wasn't anything to be afraid of.
Theo loudly announced that they were done and, ever the optimist, remarked that at least they could get a good look at the stars. The prawn smiled. Her hand went instinctively, affectionately, to the boy's hair. She ruffled his brunette hair and smiled back at him. He was trying to be positive. So she would try to.
Charlotte removed the flashlight from where she'd wedged it beneath her arm.
“That'll be really neat. Here-- you'll probably need this more than I will.”
She held the flashlight out towards him, offering no explanation as to why she didn't need the flashlight. The lights along her carapace refused to dim. And now, in the dwindling twilight, they were much more apparent.
A chill ran through the prawn, and she shivered. In her lack of foresight, she hadn't packed a hoodie-- she simply had her tank top and cargo shorts. There was nothing to insulate her from the cool breeze that was whipping in the air. She was a glowing, shivering mess.
“What do we want to do?” the prawn finally asked, shrugging her shoulders, “I d-don't suppose you brought a game in your b-bag of tricks…?”
Despite trying to keep her tone even, it was clear she was shaking.
“All I have is a sketchbook,” she never went anywhere without it, “We could… play games in there, or draw together, or… something?”
Anything to take her mind off of how cold it was...
