Revenge is an act of passion; vengeance of justice. Injuries are revenged; crimes are avenged.
Why...?
Hachi felt her limbs slowly coming back under her control, the dullness and haze receding from her. In its place everything felt wrong. Like every individual nerve was raw. Even in all that pain, though, she managed to force herself up from where she lay, propping her torso up with her arms, though her injured hip was no longer responding. It had been ground against the concrete, opening the wound further and spilling more amber onto the snow. It was already congealing in the cold.
Why?
Her eyes stayed on Nick, unable to tear away. The lightning, thought red, was just the same. The same way it sparked from her--his--skin without effort, the same way it coiled around his--her--fist when he'd thrown that punch. The same sound and scent. The same inhuman eyes. Not as much as her, but enough.
WHY?!
Before another blow could be thrown, or another word said, the lightning was gone--as was Nicholas' armor. He fell to the ground in a heap of blood-stained clothes and mangled limbs, and fell unconscious. Hachi sat there, still, silent, hearing the beating of her heart in the injured side of her skull. It was deafening. Was it over? He wasn't moving. He was still breathing, albeit raggedly. Was he finished? Caught? She had him. Finally, finally finally finally. She'd sworn she would stop him, swore to avenge her students, and she did.
But no good feelings came to her. No relief that the battle was over, no joy that she had stopped a villain. Instead her mind was repeating itself over and over.
Why? Nick Cross had possessed a powerful Quirk from the start. Armor and speed and strength--and its appearance, that of an insect, had was unusual but nothing of note. He had never shown that he could manipulate lightning at U.A. She would have known--she would have noticed. There was no indication of that sort of power ever being inside of him. Had he learned to do that after being expelled? Where did it come from? His parents? Did his file say who his parents were? Quirks were not always genetic...but...
There were not enough Quirks in the world today for that sort of overlap, that sort similarity, that exact same energy and power and danger, to not be connected.
Solenn Lièvremont. Lightning Bug. Insectoid, lightning manipulation. A hero before there were heroes, with a heart like no other. Her mentor. Her friend. Her...
No. No, it couldn't be. He's too young. He would have been born in the time I knew her--there was no way I wouldn't have noticed. She would have told me.
Wouldn't she?
No. She never told me why she was in Japan. She never told me about her family, or why she'd left Europe. She kept things from me. She always did.
But a child? Her child? They...they have to be related, there's no way his Quirk and hers could line up so perfectly. Did she have a child and hide it from me?
How? When? Why...?
No, it still doesn't line up. Nick is too young.
Then...then what about his parents...?
Hachi was still not moving. Her whole body was in pain, but nothing stalled her movements more than her own mind spiraling out of her control. Too many questions. Too hurt to think clearly. Too much. It was all too much. Nick Cross was supposed to be a villain and a monster and a criminal she would put away and be done with. To pay for what he'd done. She would never need to see him again after turning him in.
Now...
"...oh, Solenn, what have you done?" Hachi whispered, sobbed, her voice unheard over the winter winds.
